The performance of a transimpedance amplifier (TIA) can be enhanced by lowering the input impedance and applying the nonconstant gain-bandwidth product (GBP) technique. In this paper, a TIA of utilizing both properties is presented and the performance of the conventional and the proposed TIAs is analyzed theoretically and experimentally. The lowered input impedance increases the operational bandwidth whereas the nonconstant GBP decouples the tradeoff relation between the gain and the bandwidth of the conventional TIA. Since this advantage of the enhanced performance is achieved at the cost of degradation in noise characteristics, however, comprehensive noise analysis and in-depth comparison between the conventional and the proposed TIAs are investigated. In the proposed design, a common-base stage is inserted as the first stage in the conventional TIA for lowering the input impedance. In addition, the global feedback network is formed for achieving nonconstant gain-bandwidth. Compared with the conventional TIA, the measurement results show that the proposed TIA presents a 6.3× increase in GBP and a 33% increase in the spot noise, exhibiting an improvement of 3.5× in the overall figure-of-merit.

A 19-year-old male golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) presented for an abnormal heart rhythm on auscultation. An electrocardiogram was performed on the patient and demonstrated frequent supraventricular premature complexes. While an echocardiogram on the same patient revealed marked systolic dysfunction of the severely enlarged left ventricle as well as severely enlarged left atrium. No clinical evidence of left-sided congestive heart failure was noted. Treatment with isoxsuprine and atenolol was initiated. After 2 weeks, no significant changes were appreciable on repeat examination. The medical therapy was modified to isoxsuprine, sotalol, and pimobendan. Following 4 weeks of the new treatment plan, chamber sizes of the left ventricle and atrium were reduced, and the cardiac rhythm had converted to a normal rhythm. A computed tomography angiography (CTA) was conducted and identified substantial narrowing of the internal diameter of the right brachiocephalic artery. Fifteen months after initial diagnosis, the patient continues to maintain a normal sinus rhythm, normal cardiac size, and appropriate systolic function of the left ventricle despite no changes observed in the right brachiocephalic arterial diameter on repeat CTA. This case report demonstrates the therapeutic potential of sotalol at 1 mg/kg PO BID for the treatment of supraventricular premature complexes and a diagnostic utility of CTA for the case of suspected atherosclerosis.

In humans, dystrophin mutations cause the X-linked recessive disorder known as Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). These mutations result in skeletal and cardiac muscle damage with mortality increasingly associated with cardiomyopathy. We have identified a novel dystrophin mutation in exon 21 in a line of Australian Labradoodles; affected dogs develop progressive clinical signs including poor weight gain and weight loss, gait abnormalities, exercise intolerance, skeletal muscle atrophy, macroglossa, ptyalism, dysphagia, kyphosis, and a plantigrade stance. Echocardiographic abnormalities include hyperechoic foci in the left ventricular papillary muscles, septal hypokinesis, and decreased left ventricular systolic and diastolic volume and internal diameter. Holter recordings found a Mobitz type II second-degree atrioventricular (AV) block in one affected dog. Analysis of phosphocreatine-to-ATP ratios (PCr/ATP) (obtained via cardiac magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy evaluation), found no statistically significant difference in the mean PCr/ATP between groups. Histopathologic skeletal muscle changes included fibrofatty infiltration, myocyte degeneration, necrosis, and regeneration, lymphohistiocytic inflammation, and mineralization; cardiac changes were limited to a focal area of mineralization adjacent to the sinoatrial node in the dog with a second-degree AV block. Due to rapidly progressive clinical signs, a severe phenotype, and potential for cardiac involvement, Australian Labradoodle dystrophinopathy may be a useful model to further study DMD pathogenesis.

BACKGROUND Various techniques are used to support contact tracing, which has been shown to be highly effective against the COVID-19 pandemic. To apply the technology, either quarantine authorities should provide the location history of patients with COVID-19, or all users should provide their own location history. This inevitably exposes either the patient’s location history or the personal location history of other users. Thus, a privacy issue arises where the public good (via information release) comes in conflict with privacy exposure risks. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study is to develop an effective contact tracing system that does not expose the location information of the patient with COVID-19 to other users of the system, or the location information of the users to the quarantine authorities. METHODS We propose a new protocol called PRivacy Oriented Technique for Epidemic Contact Tracing (PROTECT) that securely shares location information of patients with users by using the Brakerski/Fan-Vercauteren homomorphic encryption scheme, along with a new, secure proximity computation method. RESULTS We developed a mobile app for the end-user and a web service for the quarantine authorities by applying the proposed method, and we verified their effectiveness. The proposed app and web service compute the existence of intersections between the encrypted location history of patients with COVID-19 released by the quarantine authorities and that of the user saved on the user’s local device. We also found that this contact tracing smartphone app can identify whether the user has been in contact with such patients within a reasonable time. CONCLUSIONS This newly developed method for contact tracing shares location information by using homomorphic encryption, without exposing the location information of patients with COVID-19 and other users. Homomorphic encryption is challenging to apply to practical issues despite its high security value. In this study, however, we have designed a system using the Brakerski/Fan-Vercauteren scheme that is applicable to a reasonable size and developed it to an operable format. The developed app and web service can help contact tracing for not only the COVID-19 pandemic but also other epidemics. CLINICALTRIAL

It has been known that negative feedback loops (internal and external) in a SiGe heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBT) DC current mirrors improve single-event transient (SET) response, both the peak transient current and the settling time significantly decrease. In the present work, we demonstrate how radiation hardening by design (RHBD) techniques utilized in DC bias blocks only (current mirrors) can also improve the SET response in AC signal paths of switching circuits (e.g., current-mode logic, CML) without any additional hardening in those AC signal paths. Four CML circuits both with and without RHBD current mirrors were fabricated in 130 nm SiGe HBT technology. Two existing RHBD techniques were employed separately in the current mirrors of the CML circuits: (1) applying internal negative feedback and (2) adding a large capacitor in a sensitive node. In addition, these methods are also combined to analyze the overall SET performance. The single-event transients of the fabricated circuits were captured under the two-photon-absorption laser-induced single-event environment. The measurement data clearly show significant improvements in SET response in the AC signal paths of the CML circuits by using the two radiation hardening techniques applied only in DC current mirrors. The peak output transient current is notably reduced, and the settling time upon a laser strike is shortened significantly.

Background The effects of sacubitril/valsartan (S/V) on the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) in dogs with cardiomegaly secondary to myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) are currently unknown. Objectives To determine the pharmacodynamic effects of S/V on the RAAS, natriuretic peptide concentrations, systolic arterial pressure (SAP), tests of renal function, and serum electrolyte concentrations in dogs with cardiomegaly secondary to MMVD. Animals Thirteen client-owned dogs weighing 4-15 kg with American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) Stage B2 MMVD. Methods Prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot study of S/V in dogs with ACVIM Stage B2 MMVD. Results Thirteen dogs were recruited: S/V (n = 7) and placebo (n = 6). The median percentage increase in urinary aldosterone to creatinine ratio (UAldo : C) between day 0 and day 30 was significantly lower in the S/V group (12%; P = .032) as compared with the placebo group (195%). The median percentage decrease of NT-proBNP concentration from day 0 to day 30 was not statistically different between groups (P = .68). No statistical differences were seen in echocardiographic, thoracic radiographic, SAP, or serum biochemical test results measured at any time point between groups. No adverse events were observed for dogs in either group. Conclusion and clinical importance Sacubitril/valsartan may provide a new pharmaceutical method to effectively inhibit the RAAS in dogs with ACVIM Stage B2 MMVD.

OBJECTIVE To characterize expression profiles of circulating microRNAs via genome-wide sequencing for dogs with congestive heart failure (CHF) secondary to myxomatous mitral valve degeneration (MMVD). ANIMALS 9 healthy client-owned dogs and 8 age-matched client-owned dogs with CHF secondary to MMVD. PROCEDURES Blood samples were collected before administering cardiac medications for the management of CHF. Isolated microRNAs from plasma were classified into microRNA libraries and subjected to next-generation sequencing (NGS) for genome-wide sequencing analysis and quantification of circulating microRNAs. Quantitative reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR) assays were used to validate expression profiles of differentially expressed circulating microRNAs identified from NGS analysis of dogs with CHF. RESULTS 326 microRNAs were identified with NGS analysis. Hierarchical analysis revealed distinct expression patterns of circulating microRNAs between healthy dogs and dogs with CHF. Results of qRT-PCR assays confirmed upregulation of 4 microRNAs (miR-133, miR-1, miR-let-7e, and miR-125) and downregulation of 4 selected microRNAs (miR-30c, miR-128, miR-142, and miR-423). Results of qRT-PCR assays were highly correlated with NGS data and supported the specificity of circulating microRNA expression profiles in dogs with CHF secondary to MMVD. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE These results suggested that circulating microRNA expression patterns were unique and could serve as molecular biomarkers of CHF in dogs with MMVD.

A cascode configuration with inverse-mode (IM) common-emitter silicon-germanium (SiGe) heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs) is proposed for the mitigation of single-event transients (SETs) in low-noise amplifiers (LNAs). Conventionally, despite their SET-mitigation capability, IM SiGe HBTs have been considered to be unsuitable for active gain stages due to severe degradation in RF performance. However, with the benefits of aggressive technology scaling, the high frequency performance of IM SiGe HBTs has been significantly improved, thereby enabling them to be utilized in active gain stages with acceptable RF performance. The cascode with IM common-emitter and common-base SiGe HBTs is used for a 2.4 GHz prototype LNA and it achieves adequate RF gain (10 dB) and noise figure (1.9 dB). With regard to SET mitigation, a through-wafer two-photon absorption pulsed-laser experiment is conducted to test the efficacy of this radiation-hardening approach in an advanced 90 nm SiGe BiCMOS platform. The proposed IM-SiGe-HBT-based LNA exhibits 85% reduction in transient peaks compared to the conventional forward-mode cascode LNA.

The capability of inverse-mode (IM) silicon- germanium (SiGe) heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs) for the mitigation of single-event transients (SETs) under large-signal operation was investigated in an RF down-conversion single- balanced mixer using a through-wafer, two-photon absorption pulsed-laser beam experiment and TCAD heavy-ion simulations. The IM SiGe HBTs replace conventional forward-mode (FM) SiGe HBTs in the differential pair, which provides full current steering for frequency mixing operation. Under steady-state conditions, the IM SiGe HBT differential pair exhibits smaller transient peaks with shorter durations compared to the FM SiGe HBTs. In addition, under the injection of a local oscillator (LO) signal with large swing, the IM SiGe HBTs show faster recovery (50% reduction in the best case) from the impact of SETs. In the frequency domain, it is observed that IM SiGe HBTs produce less distortion at the output for an intermediate frequency below 1 GHz. Based on the performance comparison between FM and IM SiGe HBT down-conversion mixers, system design guidelines to compensate the noise figure degradation associated with using IM SiGe HBTs are discussed.

The single-event transient (SET) response of a SiGe-based, L-band low-noise amplifier (LNA) is investigated, with a focus on providing recommendations for radiation event simulation techniques. Pulsed-laser, two-photon absorption experiments show that the SET sensitivity of the SiGe LNA is highly dependent on operating conditions and strike location. Time and frequency-domain analyses raise potential concerns for digital data modulated on RF carrier signals. Device and circuit-level ion-strike TCAD simulations are utilized to compare alternative simulation approaches, highlight the importance of parasitics on SET simulation accuracy, and suggest best practices for modeling radiation-induced transients within RF/mm-wave circuits.

The single event effect (SEE) response of devices and differential pairs in a 32-nm SOI CMOS technology is explored using laser-induced carrier injection and TCAD simulations. Both nFETs and pFETs in this technology exhibit similar sensitive area to laser-induced SEE and are strongly dependent on the drain bias condition. TCAD simulations were conducted in order to confirm results and utilize a 3-D mixed-mode simulation approach to more accurately model testing conditions. The differential pair (diff. pair) circuit SEE response extends the discussion to include the use of these devices in a core analog/RF circuit block. The analysis includes the use of floating body (FB) and body-connected (BC) devices. Body-connected FETs tend to exhibit a transient response that is much shorter in duration when compared directly to its floating body counterpart.

The benefits of using through-silicon-vias (TSVs) in silicon-germanium (SiGe) heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) low-noise amplifiers (LNAs) over the conventional wire bonding have been investigated for the first time. The parasitics associated with wire bonding can be significantly minimized with TSVs, thereby reducing the LNA performance degradation at the packaging level. To verify simulations and theoretical analysis, a prototype K-band TSV-integrated LNA was implemented in a SiGe HBT platform. The parasitic inductance of TSVs was effectively utilized as an adjustable matching element for the optimum LNA performance. The single-event transient (SET) response of a third-generation bulk C-SiGe ( npn + pnp) BiCMOS platform is investigated for the first time. Pulsed-laser, two-photon absorption experiments show that the pnp SiGe heterojunction bipolar transistor (SiGe HBT) exhibits a significant reduction in sensitive area as well as an improved transient response compared with the npn SiGe HBT. Ion-strike simulations on 3-D TCAD, C-SiGe HBT models agree with experimental findings, showing a reduction in overall transient duration and collected charge for the pnp SiGe HBT. These improvements in device-level SETs are attributed to the n-well isolation layer present in the vertical material stack of the pnp HBT. These results suggest that precision analog, RF/mm-wave, and high-speed digital applications utilizing unhardened, high-performance bulk pnp SiGe HBTs should benefit from an inherently improved SEE response.

A SiGe RF low-noise amplifier (LNA) with built-in tolerance to single-event transients is proposed. The LNA utilizes an inverse-mode SiGe HBT for the common-base transistor in a cascode core. This new cascode configuration exhibits reduced transient peaks and shorter transient durations compared to the conventional cascode one. The improved SET response was verified with through-wafer two-photon absorption pulsed-laser experiments and supported via mixed-mode TCAD simulations. In addition, analysis of the RF performance and the reliability issues associated with the inverse-mode operation further suggests this new cascode structure can be a strong contender for space-based applications. The LNA with the inverse-mode-based cascode core was fabricated in a 130 nm SiGe BiCMOS platform and has similar RF performance to the conventional schematic-based LNA, further validating the proposed approach.

This paper presents an investigation of the impact of single-event transients (SETs) and total ionization dose (TID) on precision voltage reference circuits designed in a fourth-generation, 90-nm SiGe BiCMOS technology. A first-order uncompensated bandgap reference (BGR) circuit is used to benchmark the SET and TID responses of these voltage reference circuits (VRCs). Based on the first-order BGR radiation response, new circuit-level radiation-hardening-by-design (RHBD) techniques are proposed. An RHBD technique using inverse-mode (IM) transistors is demonstrated in a BGR circuit. In addition, a PIN diode VRC is presented as a potential SET and TID tolerant, circuit-level RHBD alternative.

We have investigated the Seebeck coefficient of solution-grown lead sulfide (PbS) films at room temperature. A high Seebeck coefficient of 450 μV/K was observed, which is over three times the value commonly measured for PbS films. The positive sign of the Seebeck coefficient indicates that the measured film was characteristically p-type. The high sheet resistance of the films, ∼186 kΩ/sq., suggests that the high Seebeck coefficient may be the result of increased contributions from junctions and boundary scattering of carriers occurring at interfaces between nanocrystallites, consistent with the scanning electron microscopy study of the film morphology. The solution-grown PbS technology employed here is inherently scalable and, with the larger Seebeck coefficient, may be well suited for energy-harvesting applications.

Atrial fibrillation is characterized by uncoordinated electrical activation of the atria that leads to the loss of atrial mechanical function and atrial fibrosis as a substrate promoting maintenance of rhythm abnormality. Transvenous electrical cardioversion has not been previously reported in the dog. The authors demonstrate the use of this technique for successful cardioversion of atrial fibrillation in two dogs with dilated cardiomyopathy.

A 3-day-old Hereford heifer calf presented for evaluation of lethargy and dyspnea, with persistent hypoxia despite supplemental oxygen therapy. A grade III/VI right apical systolic murmur was noted during cardiac auscultation. Echocardiography revealed a double-outlet right ventricle with an intact interventricular septum and concurrent hypoplastic left ventricle and tricuspid valve dysplasia. Post-mortem examination revealed additional congenital anomalies of ductus arteriosus, patent foramen ovale, and persistent left cranial vena cava. This report illustrates the use of echocardiographic images to diagnose a double-outlet right ventricle with an intact interventricular septum and a hypoplastic left ventricle in a calf.

Objective To demonstrate a critical role of artificial cardiac pacing to normalize severe bradyarrhythmia-induced hyperkalemia in a dog with third-degree atrioventricular (AV) block. Case Summary A dog was presented for evaluation of severe hyperkalemia and bradyarrhythmia. ECG revealed third-degree AV block with heart rate of 10–20 min, which was lower than usual ventricular escape rate. The etiology of severe hyperkalemia was considered secondary to significantly decreased renal perfusion and potassium excretion as a result of poor cardiac output caused by the AV block. Since potassium disorders may lead to life-threatening conditions such as cardiopulmonary arrest, artificial cardiac pacing was immediately pursued. Within 1 hour, serum potassium concentration was normalized, which confirmed that severe hyperkalemia occurred primarily due to third-degree AV block. The dog was then treated with permanent pacemaker implantation. A recheck evaluation 3-month post pacemaker implantation showed normal serum potassium concentration and the dog was clinically healthy. New or Unique Information Provided This report describes hyperkalemia secondary to significantly decreased cardiac output and renal hypoperfusion caused by third-degree AV block. The authors propose that artificial cardiac pacing must be considered as an emergency treatment for bradyarrhythmia-induced hyperkalemia, which ultimately restores cardiac output and renal perfusion and normalizes serum potassium concentration.

BACKGROUND Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, characterized by thickened ventricular walls and reduced ventricular chamber volume, is a common cause of sudden cardiac death in young people. Most inherited forms result from mutations in genes encoding sarcomeric proteins. METHODS Histologic analysis identified embryonic cardiac hypertrophy in dark-like mutant mice. BrdU analysis was performed to measure proliferation and cardiomyocytes were isolated to measure cell size. The dark-like mutation was identified by positional cloning. RESULTS The dark-like mutation causes cardiomyocyte hypertrophy due to loss-of-function of peptidase d (Pepd), which encodes prolidase, a cytosolic enzyme that recycles proline for collagen re-synthesis. Prolidase deficiency is a rare autosomal recessive disease in humans with a broad phenotypic spectrum not reported to include heart defects, but a conserved role for prolidase in heart development was confirmed by morpholino knockdown in zebrafish. We tested the hypothesis that loss of prolidase function disrupts collagen-mediated integrin signaling and determined that the levels of several key integrin transducers were reduced in the hearts of dark-like mutant embryos. CONCLUSIONS This work identifies dark-like mice as a model of prolidase deficiency that will be valuable for studying the role of proline metabolism in normal physiology and disease processes, and suggests that integrin signaling may regulate the onset of hypertrophic cardiac growth. The dark-like (dal) mutant mouse has a pleiotropic phenotype that includes dark dorsal hairs and reproductive degeneration. Their pigmentation phenotype is similar to Attractin (Atrn) mutants, which also develop vacuoles throughout the brain. In further characterizing the testicular degeneration of dal mutant males, we found that they had reduced serum testosterone and developed vacuoles in their testes. Genetic crosses placed dal upstream of the melanocortin 1 receptor (Mc1r) and downstream of agouti, although dal suppressed the effect of agouti on pigmentation but not body weight. Atrn(mg-3J) and dal showed additive effects on pigmentation, testicular vacuolation, and spongiform neurodegeneration, but transgenic overexpression of Attractin-like-1 (Atrnl1), which compensates for loss of ATRN, did not rescue dal mutant phenotypes. Our results suggest dal and Atrn function in the same pathway and that identification of the dal gene will provide insight into molecular mechanisms of vacuolation in multiple cell types.

Background: The prevalence and prognostic importance of atrial fibrillation (AF) on survival in nonsmall breed dogs with myxomatous mitral valvular disease (MMVD) and congestive heart failure (CHF) remain unknown. Aim: To identify the prevalence of AF in nonsmall breed dogs with CHF because of MMVD and to characterize the impact of AF on survival outcome. Animal: Sixty-four client-owned dogs ( > 15 kg) with MMVD and CHF. Methods: Retrospective review of medical records for dogs weighing > 15 kg with MMVD treated for CHF. Results: Thirty-three dogs presented with AF or developed AF during follow-up examinations, and 31 dogs were free of AF until cardiac-related death. For dogs with AF, median survival time (MST) was 142 days (range: 9-478) while dogs without AF lived 234 days (range: 13-879 days). AF increased risk of cardiac-related death (HR = 2.544; 95% CI = 1.41-4.59; P =.0019) when compared to dogs without AF. MST was significantly prolonged for dogs with AF whose rates were adequately controlled ( < 160 bpm; 171 days; n = 13) when compared to dogs that failed to respond to negative chronotropic agents (61 days; n = 20; P =.032). The administration of combination treatment (diltiazem and digoxin) significantly decreased median HR to 144 bpm (range: 84-218 bpm) in dogs with AF and significantly prolonged MST (diltiazem+digoxin: 130 days versus diltiazem: 35 days, P =.0241) when compared to diltiazem alone. Conclusions and Clinical Importance: Inadequately controlled AF is associated with a higher rate of mortality. Optimization of therapeutic strategies for the rate control of AF remains determined.

Percutaneous balloon valvuloplasty is considered the standard of care for treatment of valvular pulmonic stenosis, a common congenital defect in dogs. Supravalvular pulmonic stenosis is a rare form of pulmonic stenosis in dogs and standard treatment has not been established. Although, there have been reports of successful treatment of supravalvular pulmonic stenosis with surgical and stenting techniques, there have been no reports of balloon dilation to treat dogs with this condition. Here, a case of supravalvular pulmonic stenosis diagnosed echocardiographically and angiographically in which a significant reduction in pressure gradient was achieved with balloon dilation alone is presented.

An asymmetric, broadside-coupled Marchand balun for wideband millimeter wave applications is presented. The balun based on the modified off-center frequency method achieves 34-110 GHz operation bandwidth and exhibits minimum insertion loss of 4.7 dB at 54 GHz. To the author's best knowledge, this is the widest operational bandwidth among the recently published millimeter wave baluns in silicon technology.

The present work focuses on reducing dropout voltage and noise by exploiting the unique advantages of a complementary silicon-germanium (SiGe) heterojunction bipolar transistor (C-SiGe HBT) on SOI technology. We also explore the impact of utilizing different PNP device types on regulator performance. Design challenges arose from the off-chip load capacitor required to meet the specification of the instantaneous peak output voltage drop. To overcome these challenges, a right-hand plane (RHP) to left-hand plane (LHP) zero conversion technique with a nulling Miller resistor was applied. The complete solutions for the locations of the converted left-hand plane zero and the Miller pole affected by the nulling resistor were derived utilizing signal flow graphs without any assumptions commonly made in the literature. Two C-SiGe LDO regulators with two different types of PNP output devices were fabricated utilizing a commercially-available C-SiGe on SOI technology, and compared with the literature.

This paper introduces a systematic methodology for applying Mason's signal flow graph to the analysis of feedback circuits. We demonstrate that the relationships among signals of feedback circuits can be represented in a intuitive and graphical manner utilizing signal flow graphs. Once constructed, the desired solutions can be achieved by simple inspection of the signal flow graph. The Thevenin and Norton equivalent circuits are utilized to model the loading effects of the feedback network in the example circuits presented.

The linearity of electrically-matched NPN and PNP silicon-germanium (SiGe) heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs) on insulator (SOI) under weakly-saturated conditions, at both room temperature (300 K) and an elevated temperature (373 K), is investigated and compared for the first time. In addition, the potential circuit leverage associated with using matched complementary SiGe HBTs biased in weak-saturation is demonstrated using a Class AB push-pull output stage of a current feedback amplifier.
