Although percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for chronic total occlusion (CTO) has been increasing in recent years, CTO PCI is still one of the most challenging procedures with relatively higher rates of procedural complications and adverse clinical events after PCI. Due to the innate limitations of invasive coronary angiography, intravascular imaging (IVI) has been used as an adjunctive tool to complement PCI, especially in complex coronary artery disease. Considering the complexity of CTO lesions, the role of IVI is particularly important in CTO intervention. IVI has been a useful adjunctive tool in every step of CTO PCI including assisted wire crossing, confirmation of wire location within CTO segment, and stent optimization. The meticulous use of IVI has been one of the greatest contributors to recent progress of CTO PCI. Nevertheless, studies evaluating the role of IVI during CTO PCI are limited. The current review provides a comprehensive overview of the mechanistic advantages of IVI in CTO PCI, summarizes previous studies and trials, and presents future perspective of IVI in CTO PCI.

We developed lead gloves that minimize radiation dose to the operator's hands during interventional radiological procedures and that do not impede the operator's surgical capabilities. Existing lead gloves can protect the operator's hands by shielding radiation, but use of such gloves may impair preception sensitivity, resulting in a reduction in the operator's surgical ability. Accordingly, in this study, we developed modified lead gloves that can reduce radiation dose while maintaining operator sensitivity during procedures by modifying the operator's main surgical finger area in existing lead gloves. To evaluate the performance of developed modified lead gloves, radiation was applied in surgical conditions without gloves and with surgical gloves, lead gloves, and modified lead gloves. The radiation dose was evaluated for each condition. When the modified lead gloves were worn, the degree of shielding was similar to when conventional lead gloves were worn. Based on these results, if the operator wears modified lead gloves during interventional radiological procedures, they will protect the hands from radiation while maintaining physical sensitivity in the hands.

Abstract Mine operational safety is an important aspect of maintaining the operational continuity of a mining area. In this study, we used the InSAR time series to analyze land surface changes using the ICOPS (improved combined scatterers with optimized point scatters) method. This ICOPS method combines persistent scatterers (PS) with distributed scatterers (DS) to increase surface deformation analysis’s spatial coverage and quality. One of the improvements of this study is the use of machine learning in postprocessing, based on convolutional neural networks, to increase the reliability of results. This study used data from the Sentinel-1 SAR C-band satellite during the 2016–2022 observation period at the Musan mine, North Korea. In the InSAR surface deformation time analysis, the maximum average rate of land subsidence was approximately > 15.00 cm per year, with total surface deformation of 170 cm and 70 cm for the eastern dumping area and the western dumping area, respectively. Analyzing the mechanism of land surface changes also involved evaluating the geological conditions in the Musan mining area. Our research findings show that combining machine learning and statistical methods has great potential to enhance the understanding of mine surface deformation.

Abstract Background Landslide susceptibility assessment (LSA) is a crucial indicator of landslide hazards, and its accuracy is improving with the development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology. However, the AI algorithms are inconsistent across regions and strongly dependent on input variables. Additionally, LSA must include historical data, which often restricts the assessment to the local scale and single landslide events. Methods In this study, we performed an LSA for the entirety of South Korea. A total of 30 input variables were constructed, consisting of 9 variables from past climate model data MK-PRISM, 12 topographical factors, and 9 environmental factors. Sixteen machine learning algorithms were used as basic classifiers, and a stacking ensemble was used on the four algorithms with the highest area under the curve (AUC). Additionally, a separate assessment model was established for areas with a risk of landslides affecting areas larger than 1 ha. Results The highest-performing classifier was CatBoost, with an AUC of ~ 0.89 for both assessments. Among the input variables, distance of road, daily maximum precipitation, digital elevation model, and soil depth were the most influential. In all landslide events, CatBoost, lightGBM, XGBoost, and Random Forest had the highest AUC in descending order; in large landslide events, the order was CatBoost, XGBoost, Extra Tree, and lightGBM. The stacking ensemble enabled the construction of two landslide susceptibility maps. Conclusions Our findings provide a statistical method for constructing a high-resolution (30 m) landslide susceptibility map on a country scale using diverse natural factors, including past climate data.

Cast-resin transformers are affected by deterioration due to manufacturing defects and continuous load. Studying PD, which is capable of detecting defects or degradation in advance, is important. With the rapid advancement of AI technologies, research on PD classification using CNN models is being actively conducted. However, due to the black box problem, it is impossible to explain the reasoning behind the learning outcomes. Therefore, relying solely on predictive outcomes of learning for PD classification raises issues of reliability. Recent studies in various fields are progressing with the application of XAI to address the black box issue of CNNs, aiming to identify the criteria used for making predictions. However, research on applying XAI in AI-based PD classification is currently insufficient. Therefore, further study on the implementation of XAI is necessary. In this paper, an excellent CNN model was applied to image classification for PD classification of cast-resin transformers, and the grad-cam model was used for XAI. This approach proposes a method for humans to comprehend the rationale behind the learning outcomes. The training data includes artificial defects created in laboratory settings and noise captured in cast-resin transformers using UHF sensors. Our research demonstrated that PD and noise due to defects can be identified with an accuracy of approximately 97%. The reasons for successful and failed results were analyzed through XAI. Consequently, it was observed that the application of XAI to CNN models leads to the construction of a more reliable model.

This study aimed to establish conservation measures for the preservation of the natural habitats of Pedicularis ishidoyana, an endemic plant species in South Korea. A field survey was conducted using Braun–Blanquet's phytosociological method to analyze the vegetation characteristics of the natural habitat of P. ishidoyana in the regions of Gyeongju, Geoje, and Yeongyang in Gyeongsang Province, South Korea. Based on this, evaluations were made on the importance value and species diversity. As a result, the importance value of P. ishidoyana was found to be the highest in the Gyeongju (14.95) region, the species composition among different habitats was determined to be similar. Moreover, the natural habitats of P. ishidoyana were distributed in elevations ranging from 107 to 490 m, and the plants thrived mainly on slopes around valleys. In this study, the UKESM1-0-LL dataset and Maxent (Maximum entropy model) were utilized to forecast future distributional changes. Specifically, future climate data from the Shared Socioeconomic Pathway (SSP) 2–4.5 and 5–8.5 scenarios, as suggested in the IPCC 6th assessment report, were employed. As a result, it was analyzed that the suitable habitat for P. ishidoyana increased under the SSP 2–4.5 scenario, while it decreased under the SSP 5-8.5 scenario.

Abstract The major neuropathologic feature of Parkinson’s disease is the presence of widespread intracellular inclusions of α-synuclein known as Lewy bodies. Evidence suggests that these misfolded protein inclusions spread through the brain with disease progression. Changes in synaptic function precede neurodegeneration, and this extracellular α-synuclein can affect synaptic transmission. However, whether and how the spreading of α-synuclein aggregates modulates synaptic function before neuronal loss remains unknown. In the present study, we investigated the effect of intrastriatal injection of α-synuclein preformed fibrils (PFFs) on synaptic activity in the somatosensory cortex using a combination of whole-cell patch-clamp electrophysiology, histology, and Golgi-Cox staining. Intrastriatal PFF injection was followed by formation of phosphorylated α-synuclein inclusions in layer 5 of the somatosensory cortex, leading to a decrease in synapse density, dendritic spines, and spontaneous excitatory post-synaptic currents, without apparent neuronal loss. Additionally, three-dimensional reconstruction of microglia using confocal imaging showed an increase in the engulfment of synapses. Collectively, our data indicate that propagation of α-synuclein through neural networks causes abnormalities in synaptic structure and dynamics prior to neuronal loss.

Change detection using SAR data has been an active topic in various applications. Because conventional change detection identifies signal changes in single-pol radar observations, they cannot separately detect different kinds of change associated with different ground parameters. In this study, we investigated the comprehensive use of dual-pol parameters and proposed a novel dual-pol-based change detection framework utilizing different dual-pol scatter-type indicators. To optimize the exploitation of dual-pol change information, we presented a two-step processing strategy that divides the multiclass change detection process into a binary detection step that identifies the presence of changes and the classification step that distinguishes the types of change. In the detection stage, each dual-pol parameter was considered as an independent information source. Assuming potential conflict between dual-pol parameters, a disjunctive combination of detection results from different dual-pol parameters was applied to obtain the final detection result. In the classification step, an unsupervised change classification strategy was proposed based on the change direction and magnitude of the dual-pol parameters within the change class. Experimental results exhibited significantly improved detectability across a wide change spectrum compared with previous dual-pol-based change detection approaches. They also demonstrated the possibility of distinguishing different semantic changes without in situ ground data.

Accurate frost observations are crucial for developing and validating frost prediction models. In 2022, the multi-sensor-based automatic frost observation system (MFOS), including an RGB camera, a thermal infrared camera, a leaf wetness sensor (LWS), LED lighting, and three glass plates, was developed to replace the naked-eye observation of frost. The MFOS, herein installed and operated in an apple orchard, provides temporally high-resolution frost observations that show the onset, end, duration, persistence, and discontinuity of frost more clearly than conventional naked-eye observations. This study introduces recent additions to the MFOS and presents the results of its application to frost weather analysis and forecast evaluation in an orchard in South Korea. The NCAM’s Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model was employed as a weather forecast model. The main findings of this study are as follows: (1) The newly added image-based object detection capabilities of the MFOS helped with the extraction and quantitative comparison of surface temperature data for apples, leaves, and the LWS. (2) The resolution matching of the RGB and thermal infrared images was made successful by resizing the images, matching them according to horizontal movement, and conducting apple-centered averaging. (3) When applied to evaluate the frost-point predictions of the numerical weather model at one-hour intervals, the results showed that the MFOS could be used as a much more objective tool to verify the accuracy and characteristics of frost predictions compared to the naked-eye view. (4) Higher-resolution and realistic land-cover and vegetation representation are necessary to improve frost forecasts using numerical grid models based on land–atmosphere physics.

Abstract Parkinson’s disease (PD) is characterized by a selective loss of dopaminergic neurons. While most research on PD conducted to date has focused on neurons and, to a certain extent, glia, few studies have investigated changes in oligodendroglia. Here, we investigated the heterogeneity of oligodendrocytes from PD patients compared with those of control cases by analyzing single-nuclei transcriptomes. These analyses revealed the presence of distinct oligodendrocyte populations in PD patients indicative of corresponding variations in molecular features, notably including activation of inflammatory responses, response to protein folding stress, and myelination abnormalities. We confirmed myelination abnormalities in an α-synuclein preformed fibril-injection mouse model of PD. These results suggest that oligodendrocytes acquire disease-associated phenotypes in PD and may contribute to the accompanying neurodegeneration.

Abstract Metastatic cancer cells can develop anoikis resistance in the absence of substrate attachment and survive to fight tumors. Anoikis is mediated by endogenous mitochondria-dependent and exogenous death receptor pathways, and studies have shown that caspase-8-dependent external pathways appear to be more important than the activity of the intrinsic pathways. This paper reviews the regulation of anoikis by external pathways mediated by death receptors. Different death receptors bind to different ligands to activate downstream caspases. The possible mechanisms of Fas-associated death domain (FADD) recruitment by Fas and TNF receptor 1 associated-death domain (TRADD) recruitment by tumor necrosis factor receptor 1 (TNFR1), and DR4- and DR5-associated FADD to induce downstream caspase activation and regulate anoikis were reviewed. This review highlights the possible mechanism of the death receptor pathway mediation of anoikis and provides new insights and research directions for studying tumor metastasis mechanisms. The purpose of this study is to perform radiation monitoring by acquiring gamma images and real-time optical images for 99mTc vial source using charge couple device (CCD) cameras equipped with the proposed compact gamma camera. The compact gamma camera measures 86 × 65 × 78.5 mm3 and weighs 934 g. It is equipped with a metal 3D printed diverging collimator manufactured in a 45° field of view (FOV) to detect the location of the source. The circuit's system uses system-on-chip (SoC) and field-programmable-gate-array (FPGA) to establish a good connection between hardware and software. In detection modules, the photodetector (multi-pixel photon counters) is tiled at 8 × 8 to expand the activation area and improve sensitivity. The gadolinium aluminium gallium garnet (GAGG) measuring 0.5 × 0.5 × 3.5 mm3 was arranged in 38 × 38 arrays. Intrinsic and extrinsic performance tests such as energy spectrum, uniformity, and system sensitivity for other radioisotopes, and sensitivity evaluation at edges within FOV were conducted. The compact gamma camera can be mounted on unmanned equipment such as drones and robots that require miniaturization and light weight, so a wide range of applications in various fields are possible.

Abstract Psoriasis is a chronic, systemic immune-mediated disease caused by abnormal proliferation, decreased apoptosis, and over-differentiation of keratinocytes. The psoriatic skin lesions due to abnormal keratinocytes are closely associated with ROS produced by inflammatory cells. Peroxiredoxin II (Prx II) is an efficient antioxidant enzyme, which were highly expressed in skin tissues of psoriasis patient. However, the detailed mechanical functions of Prx II on psoriatic skin remain to be elucidated. Present study showed that depletion of Prx II results in alleviation of symptoms of IMQ-induced psoriasis in mice, but no significant differences in the amounts of serum inflammatory factors. Prx II-knockdown HaCaT cells were susceptible to H2O2-induced apoptosis mediated by Ca2+ release from the endoplasmic reticulum through 1,4,5-triphosphate receptors (IP3Rs), the PI3K/AKT pathway and phosphorylated GSK3β (Ser9) were significant downregulated. Additionally, significantly reduced sensitivity of Prx II-knockdown HaCaT cells to apoptosis was evident post NAC, 2-APB, BAPTA-AM, SC79 and LiCl treated. These results suggest that Prx II regulated apoptosis of keratinocytes via the PI3K/AKT/GSK3β signaling axis. Furthermore, treatment with the Prx II inhibitor Conoidin A significantly alleviated psoriatic symptoms in IMQ model mice. These findings have important implications for developing therapeutic strategies through regulate apoptosis of keratinocytes in psoriasis, and Prx II inhibitors may be exploited as a therapeutic drug to alleviate psoriatic symptoms.

Abstract Cell-to-cell propagation of protein aggregates has been implicated in the progression of neurodegenerative diseases. However, the underlying mechanism and modulators of this process are not fully understood. Here, we screened a small-molecule library in a search for agents that suppress the propagation of α-synuclein and mutant huntingtin (mHtt). These screens yielded several molecules, some of which were effective against both α-synuclein and mHtt. Among these molecules, we focused on simvastatin and pravastatin. Simvastatin administration in a transgenic model of synucleinopathy effectively ameliorated behavioral deficits and α-synuclein accumulation, whereas pravastatin had no effect. Because only simvastatin enters the brain effectively, these results suggest that inhibition of brain cholesterol synthesis is important in simvastatin effects. In cultured cells, accumulation of intracellular cholesterol, induced by genetic ablation of the NPC1 gene or by pharmacological treatment with U18666A, increased α-synuclein aggregation and secretion. In contrast, lowering cholesterol using methyl-β-cyclodextrin or statins reversed α-synuclein aggregation and secretion in NPC1-knockout cells. Consistent with these observations, feeding a high-fat diet aggravated α-synuclein pathology and behavioral deficits in the preformed fibril-injected mouse model, an effect that was also reversed by simvastatin administration. These results suggest that statins suppress propagation of protein aggregates by lowering cholesterol in the brain.

Abstract The genome of Populus davidiana, a keystone aspen species, has been sequenced to improve our understanding of the evolutionary and functional genomics of the Populus genus. The Hi-C scaffolding genome assembly resulted in a 408.1 Mb genome with 19 pseudochromosomes. The BUSCO assessment revealed that 98.3% of the genome matched the embryophytes dataset. A total of 31,862 protein-coding sequences were predicted, of which 31,619 were functionally annotated. The assembled genome was composed of 44.9% transposable elements. These findings provide new knowledge about the characteristics of the P. davidiana genome and will facilitate comparative genomics and evolutionary research on the genus Populus.

Background The ECG is a simple, noninvasive screening method for cardiovascular disease and arrhythmia. The impact of ECG abnormality on mortality is not certain in low‐risk populations. To address this, we evaluated the association between ECG abnormality and mortality. Methods and Results We retrospectively assessed baseline ECG and all‐cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality in 660 383 patients presenting for medical check‐ups. Baseline ECG abnormalities were classified according to the Minnesota Code. Among the total 660 383 participants, 23 609 (3.6%) had major and 110 038 (16.7%) had minor ECG abnormalities. All‐cause mortality occurred in 7751 patients (1.1%) and cardiovascular mortality in 1180 (0.18%) over a median follow‐up period of 8.8 years. Major ECG abnormalities were associated with all‐cause mortality (hazard ratio [HR], 1.11 [95%, 1.03–1.2]) and cardiovascular mortality (HR, 1.92 [95% CI, 1.63–2.27]) compared with no ECG abnormalities. All‐cause mortality was associated with right atrial enlargement (HR, 2.11 [95% CI, 1.1–4.07]), left atrial enlargement (HR, 1.76 [95% CI, 1.1–2.84]), sinus tachycardia (HR, 1.52 [95% CI, 1.15–2.01]), complete atrioventricular block (HR, 2.1 [95% CI, 1.05–4.2]), atrial fibrillation (HR, 1.52 [95% CI, 1.26–1.84]), and left ventricular hypertrophy (HR, 1.15 [95% CI, 1.02–1.3]). Cardiovascular mortality was associated with left atrial enlargement (HR, 4.52 [95% CI, 2.15–9.5]), atrial fibrillation (HR, 3.22 [95% CI, 2.33–4.46]), left ventricular hypertrophy (HR, 1.72 [95% CI, 1.35–2.19]), major Q‐wave abnormality (HR, 1.6 [95% CI, 1.08–2.39]), and major ST‐T abnormality (HR, 1.76 [95% CI, 1.01–3.04]). Conclusions ECG abnormalities, including left atrial enlargement, left ventricular hypertrophy, atrial fibrillation, and major Q‐wave and ST‐T abnormalities, were associated with cardiovascular mortality in a low‐risk population.

Foods that contain components known for their health-promoting qualities, beyond just their nutritional value, are called functional foods. These particular components are referred to as functional food ingredients. Mainly, the bioactive peptides purified from food materials, including animal sources, have been identified as such functional food ingredients. In this review, we discuss the purification process of bioactive peptides from duck meat, egg and processing by-products. Additionally, we highlight the technologies currently used to purify bioactive peptides from sources other than duck, including modern computational techniques like insilico methodology or bioinformatics as well as and methods to enhance the purification process. These techniques can be applied in the future to purify bioactive peptides from duck in order to boost the efficacy of bioactive peptide purification. Furthermore, we summarize the bio-functional activities of bioactive peptides, purified from duck, which help to protect the body against various diseases, thereby proving their potential to be functional food ingredients.

Abstract Background There are currently no disease-modifying therapeutics for Parkinson’s disease (PD). Although extensive efforts were undertaken to develop therapeutic approaches to delay the symptoms of PD, untreated α-synuclein (α-syn) aggregates cause cellular toxicity and stimulate further disease progression. PROTAC (Proteolysis-Targeting Chimera) has drawn attention as a therapeutic modality to target α-syn. However, no PROTACs have yet shown to selectively degrade α-syn aggregates mainly owing to the limited capacity of the proteasome to degrade aggregates, necessitating the development of novel approaches to fundamentally eliminate α-syn aggregates. Methods We employed AUTOTAC (Autophagy-Targeting Chimera), a macroautophagy-based targeted protein degradation (TPD) platform developed in our earlier studies. A series of AUTOTAC chemicals was synthesized as chimeras that bind both α-syn aggregates and p62/SQSTM1/Sequestosome-1, an autophagic receptor. The efficacy of Autotacs was evaluated to target α-syn aggregates to phagophores and subsequently lysosomes for hydrolysis via p62-dependent macroautophagy. The target engagement was monitored by oligomerization and localization of p62 and autophagic markers. The therapeutic efficacy to rescue PD symptoms was characterized in cultured cells and mice. The PK/PD (pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics) profiles were investigated to develop an oral drug for PD. Results ATC161 induced selective degradation of α-syn aggregates at DC50 of ~ 100 nM. No apparent degradation was observed with monomeric α-syn. ATC161 mediated the targeting of α-syn aggregates to p62 by binding the ZZ domain and accelerating p62 self-polymerization. These p62-cargo complexes were delivered to autophagic membranes for lysosomal degradation. In PD cellular models, ATC161 exhibited therapeutic efficacy to reduce cell-to-cell transmission of α-syn and to rescue cells from the damages in DNA and mitochondria. In PD mice established by injecting α-syn preformed fibrils (PFFs) into brain striata via stereotaxic surgery, oral administration of ATC161 at 10 mg/kg induced the degradation of α-syn aggregates and reduced their propagation. ATC161 also mitigated the associated glial inflammatory response and improved muscle strength and locomotive activity. Conclusion AUTOTAC provides a platform to develop drugs for PD. ATC161, an oral drug with excellent PK/PD profiles, induces selective degradation of α-syn aggregates in vitro and in vivo. We suggest that ATC161 is a disease-modifying drug that degrades the pathogenic cause of PD.

Abstract Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the aggregation of misfolded α-synuclein and progressive spreading of the aggregates from a few discrete regions to wider brain regions. Although PD has been classically considered a movement disorder, a large body of clinical evidence has revealed the progressive occurrence of non-motor symptoms. Patients present visual symptoms in the initial stages of the disease, and accumulation of phospho-α-synuclein, dopaminergic neuronal loss, and retinal thinning has been observed in the retinas of PD patients. Based on such human data, we hypothesized that α-synuclein aggregation can initiate in the retina and spread to the brain through the visual pathway. Here, we demonstrate accumulation of α-synuclein in the retinas and brains of naive mice after intravitreal injection of α-synuclein preformed fibrils (PFFs). Histological analyses showed deposition of phospho-α-synuclein inclusions within the retina 2 months after injection, with increased oxidative stress leading to loss of retinal ganglion cells and dopaminergic dysfunction. In addition, we found accumulation of phospho-α-synuclein in cortical areas with accompanying neuroinflammation after 5 months. Collectively, our findings suggest that retinal synucleinopathy lesions initiated by intravitreal injection of α-synuclein PFFs spread to various brain regions through the visual pathway in mice.

This work highlights the novel approach of incorporating potassium iodide (KI) doping during the synthesis of In0.53P0.47 core quantum dots (QDs) to significantly reduce the concentration of vacancies (i.e., In vacancies; VIn−) within the bulk of the core QD and inhibit the formation of InPOx at the core QD–Zn0.6Se0.4 shell interfaces. The photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of ~97% and full width at half maximum (FWHM) of ~40 nm were achieved for In0.53P0.47/Zn0.6Se0.4/Zn0.6Se0.1S0.3/Zn0.5S0.5 core/multi-shell QDs emitting red light, which is essential for a quantum-dot organic light-emitting diode (QD-OLED) without red, green, and blue crosstalk. KI doping eliminated VIn− in the core QD bulk by forming K+-VIn− substitutes and effectively inhibited the formation of InPO4(H2O)2 at the core QD–Zn0.6Se0.4 shell interface through the passivation of phosphorus (P)-dangling bonds by P-I bonds. The elimination of vacancies in the core QD bulk was evidenced by the decreased relative intensity of non-radiative unpaired electrons, measured by electron spin resonance (ESR). Additionally, the inhibition of InPO4(H2O)2 formation at the core QD and shell interface was confirmed by the absence of the {210} X-ray diffraction (XRD) peak intensity for the core/multi-shell QDs. By finely tuning the doping concentration, the optimal level was achieved, ensuring maximum K-VIn− substitution, minimal K+ and I− interstitials, and maximum P-dangling bond passivation. This resulted in the smallest core QD diameter distribution and maximized optical properties. Consequently, the maximum PLQY (~97%) and minimum FWHM (~40 nm) were observed at 3% KI doping. Furthermore, the color gamut of a QD-OLED display using R-, G-, and B-QD functional color filters (i.e., ~131.1%@NTSC and ~98.2@Rec.2020) provided a nearly perfect color representation, where red-light-emitting KI-doped QDs were applied.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a chronic disorder affecting the colon and rectum, involves the overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines causing damage to tight junctions (TJ) in the intestinal epithelial cells and chronic inflammation. The current mainstay of treatment, sulfasalazine, often causes adverse effects, thereby necessitating the exploration of alternative herbal medicines with fewer side effects. Portulaca oleracea L. (P. oleracea), a traditional medicinal herb, contains feruloyl amide compounds. We synthesized new compounds by conjugating ferulic acid (FA) with (±)-octopamine. Our study focused on novel FA derivatives that demonstrate protective effects against the intestinal epithelial barrier and inflammatory responses. In lipopolysaccharide-induced cells, C1 and C1a inhibited the production of inflammatory mediators. In Caco-2 cells, these compounds maintained the TJ protein expression, thereby demonstrating their protective effects on the epithelial barrier. In a mouse model of dextran sulfate sodium-induced IBD, a treatment with these compounds ameliorated features including a body weight reduction, colon shortening, an increased disease activity index, and histopathological changes. Furthermore, C1a demonstrated greater efficacy than C1 at the same concentration. These findings suggest that the novel FA derivative (C1a) effectively alleviates clinical signs and inflammatory mediators in IBD, making these compounds potential candidates as natural medicines for the treatment of IBD.

Cisplatin is a widely used anti-cancer drug for treating solid tumors, but it is associated with severe side effects, including nephrotoxicity. Various studies have suggested that the nephrotoxicity of cisplatin could be overcome; nonetheless, an effective adjuvant drug has not yet been established. Oleanolic acid acetate (OAA), a triterpenoid isolated from Vigna angularis, is commonly used to treat inflammatory and allergic diseases. This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of OAA against cisplatin-induced apoptosis and necroptosis using TCMK-1 cells and a mouse model. In cisplatin-treated TCMK-1 cells, OAA treatment significantly reduced Bax and cleaved-caspase3 expression, whereas it increased Bcl-2 expression. Moreover, in a cisplatin-induced kidney injury mouse model, OAA treatment alleviated weight loss in the body and major organs and also relieved cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity symptoms. RNA sequencing analysis of kidney tissues identified lipocalin-2 as the most upregulated gene by cisplatin. Additionally, necroptosis-related genes such as receptor-interacting protein kinase (RIPK) and mixed lineage kinase domain-like (MLKL) were identified. In an in vitro study, the phosphorylation of RIPKs and MLKL was reduced by OAA pretreatment in both cisplatin-treated cells and cells boosted via co-treatment with z-VAD-FMK. In conclusion, OAA could protect the kidney from cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity and may serve as an anti-cancer adjuvant.

Abstract The clinical progression of neurodegenerative diseases correlates with the spread of proteinopathy in the brain. The current understanding of the mechanism of proteinopathy spread is far from complete. Here, we propose that inflammation is fundamental to proteinopathy spread. A sequence variant of α-synuclein (V40G) was much less capable of fibril formation than wild-type α-synuclein (WT-syn) and, when mixed with WT-syn, interfered with its fibrillation. However, when V40G was injected intracerebrally into mice, it induced aggregate spreading even more effectively than WT-syn. Aggregate spreading was preceded by sustained microgliosis and inflammatory responses, which were more robust with V40G than with WT-syn. Oral administration of an anti-inflammatory agent suppressed aggregate spreading, inflammation, and behavioral deficits in mice. Furthermore, exposure of cells to inflammatory cytokines increased the cell-to-cell propagation of α-synuclein. These results suggest that the inflammatory microenvironment is the major driver of the spread of synucleinopathy in the brain.

Epigallocatechin 3-O-gallate (EGCG) is a predominant component in green tea with various health benefits. The 67 kDa laminin receptor (67LR) is a nonintegrin cell surface receptor that is overexpressed in various types of cancer; 67LR was identified a cell surface EGCG target that plays a pivotal role in tumor growth, metastasis, and resistance to chemotherapy. However, the plasma concentration of EGCG is limited, and its molecular mechanisms remain unelucidated in colon cancer. In this study, we found that the phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) inhibitor, vardenafil (VDN), potentiates EGCG-induced apoptotic cell death in colon cancer cells. The combination of EGCG and VDN induced apoptosis via activation of the endothelial nitric oxide synthase/cyclic guanosine monophosphate/protein kinase Cδ signaling pathway. In conclusion, the PDE5 inhibitor, VDN, may reduce the intracellular PDE5 enzyme activity that potentiates EGCG-induced apoptotic cell death in Caco-2 cells. These results suggest that PDE5 inhibitors can be used to elevate cGMP levels to induce 67LR-mediated, cancer-specific cell death. Therefore, EGCG may be employed as a therapeutic candidate for colon cancer.

Background Whether thrombectomy benefits differ according to sex remains debatable. We aimed to investigate whether there was a difference in stroke outcomes between men and women treated with thrombectomy. Methods We studied 173 patients with anterior circulation strokes. Failed recanalization was defined as thrombolysis in cerebral infarction grade 0-2a. Scores >2 on the modified Rankin Scale at 3 months were regarded as poor outcomes. To prove that failed recanalization mediated the association between sex differences and functional outcome, the four steps of the reasoning process adapted from Baron and Kenny’s causal-steps approach were tested. The adjusted odds ratios (aORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. Results This study included 76 women and 97 men. Women were older and presented with atrial fibrillation more frequently than men. Female sex was independently associated with failed recanalization (aOR, 2.729; 95% CI, 1.334–5.582), which was an independent predictor of poor outcomes (aOR, 4.630; 95% CI, 1.882–11.389). Women were associated with poor outcomes in the analysis adjusted for confounders, except for failed recanalization (aOR, 2.285; 95% CI, 1.064–4.906). However, the association became insignificant in the additional analysis adjusted for failed recanalization (aOR, 1.670; 95% CI, 0.738–3.784). The indirect effect between female sex and poor outcomes via failed recanalization was statistically significant (aOR, 1.038; 95% CI, 1.010–1.127). Conclusion Our study showed that failed recanalization mediated the association between women and poor outcomes after thrombectomy. Nonetheless, this might be explained by chance given our limited study population.

PURPOSE This study aimed to develop a team building program for a middle school soccer team in order to verify its effects. METHODS A total of 50 middle school soccer players participated in the needs analysis, and 10 middle school soccer players participated the preliminary program. In addition, a total of 37 ‘S’ middle school soccer players and 2 coaches participated the final team building program to identify its effects. The team building program was developed through the following sequence: program goal setting, organization of program activities, and the pretest. Three types of questionnaires and a self-report were utilized to verify the effects of the team building program. RESULTS The team building program was developed based on interpersonal relationships, goal setting, and communication. The level of team cohesion, team communication, and coach-athletes interaction significantly increased through this program. Furthermore, the effects of stress relief and self-improvement were revealed through the self-report. CONCLUSIONS The team building program was determined to be effective and has various benefits. It is expected to contribute to the growth of middle school soccer players if coaches actively participate in the program with their athletes.

Environmental radiation monitoring is required to protect from the effects of radiation in industrial fields such as nuclear power plant (NPP) monitoring, and various gamma camera systems are being developed. The purpose of this study is to optimize parameters of a diverging collimator composed of pure tungsten for compactness and lightness through Monte Carlo simulation. We conducted the performance evaluation based on spatial resolution and signal-to-noise ratio for point source and obtained gamma images and profiles. As a result, optimization was determined at a collimator height of 60.0 mm, a hole size of 1.5 mm, and a septal thickness of 1.0 mm. Also, the full-width-at-half-maximum was 3.5 mm and the signal-to-noise ratio was 53.5. This study proposes a compact 45° diverging collimator structure that can quickly and accurately identify the location of the source for radiation monitoring.

Quaternary structure of α-synuclein fibrils characterized from human patients with Parkinson’s disease and Multiple System Atrophy modulates seeding in mouse primary oligodendroglial cultures.

Abstract Cell-to-cell propagation of α-synuclein is thought to be the underlying mechanism of Parkinson’s disease progression. Recent evidence suggests that inflammation plays an important role in the propagation of protein aggregates. However, the mechanism by which inflammation regulates the propagation of aggregates remains unknown. Here, using in vitro cultures, we found that soluble factors secreted from activated microglia promote cell-to-cell propagation of α-synuclein and further showed that among these soluble factors, TNF-α had the most robust stimulatory activity. Treatment of neurons with TNF-α triggered cellular senescence, as shown by transcriptomic analyses demonstrating induction of senescence-associated genes and immunoanalysis of senescence phenotype marker proteins. Interestingly, secretion of α-synuclein was increased in senescent neurons, reflecting acquisition of a senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP). Using vacuolin-1, an inhibitor of lysosomal exocytosis, and RNAi against rab27a, we demonstrated that the SASP was mediated by lysosomal exocytosis. Correlative light and electron microscopy and immunoelectron microscopy confirmed that propagating α-synuclein aggregates were present in electron-dense lysosome-like compartments. TNF-α promoted the SASP through stimulation of lysosomal exocytosis, thereby increasing the secretion of α-synuclein. Collectively, these results suggest that TNF-α is the major inflammatory factor that drives cell-to-cell propagation of α-synuclein by promoting the SASP and subsequent secretion of α-synuclein.

Lindera obtusiloba Blume has several activities, such as anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, anti-tumor, anti-wrinkle, and antioxidant activities. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a classic pro-inflammatory cytokine that is associated with various functions, such as proliferation, invasion, inflammatory responses and functions within antioxidant defense systems. In this study, we investigated IL-6-induced STAT3 activation of lignan compounds isolated from L. obtusiloba. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated via spectroscopic nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). As a result, seven lignans were identified from L. obtusiloba. All the isolated compounds (1–7) were evaluated for their IL-6-induced STAT3 inhibitory effects in Hep3B cells using a luciferase reporter assay. Of the isolates, compounds 1 and 5 showed inhibitory effects against IL-6-stimulated STAT3 activation. Furthermore, the mRNA expression levels of inflammation-related genes such as CRP, IL-1b, and SOCS3 were significantly reduced by exposure to compounds 1 and 5. The protein levels of p-STAT3 and p-JAK2 in IL-6-induced U266 cells were regulated in the presence of lignans derived from Lindera obtusiloba by Western blot assay. Based on the results, this study of L. obtusiloba demonstrates that the species has promise as a bioactive candidate for the treatment of IL-6-induced STAT3-related disease.

Hail has long caused extensive damage and economic loss in places inhabited by humans. Climate change is expected to lead to different types of damage due to the geographic characteristics of each continent. Under changing environment, hail is becoming increasingly unstable and is causing damage that is difficult to repair, making it essential to study the occurrence of hail and hail-damage. Hail formation has been studied at the micro- and macrophysical scales as well as thermal and dynamical scales. Hail forms in various sizes, and the scale of damage varies with size. Hail precipitation occurs suddenly and is localized, making it is difficult to observe and predict. Nonetheless, techniques to measure and forecast hail precipitation are improving in accuracy. Hail-damage management and financial compensation systems are used to mitigate the severe economic losses caused by hail fallen in rural and urban areas. This review most comprehensively considers hail research, focusing on the mechanisms, observation and prediction methods, damage, social compensation systems for hail damage, and hail-disaster prevention, suggesting future study directions briefly.

The present study aims to investigate the dynamic properties of a novel isolation system composed of separate rubber and wire isolators. The testing program comprised pure compressive, pure-shear, compressive-stress dependence, and shear-strain dependence tests that used full-scale test specimens according to ISO 22762-1. A total of 22 test specimens were fabricated and investigated. Among the tests, the pure compressive test was a destructive test that reached up to the failure stage, whereas the others were nondestructive tests before the failure stage. Similar to the pure-shear test, at each compressive-stress level in the compressive dependence test or at each shear-strain level in the shear-strain dependence test, the cyclic loading was conducted for three cycles. In the nondestructive tests, examination of the dynamic shear properties in the X-direction was independent of the Y-direction. The test results revealed that the increase in the shear strain increased the energy dissipation but decreased the damping ratio, whereas the increase in the compressive stress increased the damping ratio. In addition, a macro model was developed to simulate the load-displacement response of the isolation systems, and the prediction results were consistent with the experimental results.

Abstract In this study, the chemical decomposition of a polyimide-film (i.e., a PI-film)-surface into a soft-film-surface containing negatively charged pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) and neutral 4,4′-oxydianiline (ODA) was successfully performed. The chemical decomposition was conducted by designing the slurry containing 350 nm colloidal silica abrasive and small molecules with amine functional groups (i.e., ethylenediamine: EDA) for chemical–mechanical planarization (CMP). This chemical decomposition was performed through two types of hydrolysis reactions, that is, a hydrolysis reaction between OH− ions or R-NH3 + (i.e., EDA with a positively charged amine groups) and oxygen atoms covalently bonded with pyromellitimide on the PI-film-surface. In particular, the degree of slurry adsorption of the PI-film-surface was determined by the EDA concentration in the slurry because of the presence of R-NH3 +, that is, a higher EDA concentration resulted in a higher degree of slurry adsorption. In addition, during CMP, the chemical decomposition degree of the PI-film-surface was principally determined by the EDA concentration; that is, the degree of chemical composition was increased noticeably and linearly with the EDA concentration. Thus, the polishing-rate of the PI-film-surface increased notably with the EDA concentration in the CMP slurry.

Abstract Abnormal deposition of α-synuclein aggregates in Lewy bodies and Lewy neurites is the hallmark lesion in Parkinson’s disease (PD). These aggregates, thought to be the culprit of disease pathogenesis, spread throughout the brain as the disease progresses. Agents that inhibit α-synuclein aggregation and/or spread of aggregates would thus be candidate disease-modifying drugs. Here, we found that Chicago sky blue 6B (CSB) may be such a drug, showing that it inhibits α-synuclein aggregation and cell-to-cell propagation in both in vitro and in vivo models of synucleinopathy. CSB inhibited the fibrillation of α-synuclein in a concentration-dependent manner through direct binding to the N-terminus of α-synuclein. Furthermore, both seeded polymerization and cell-to-cell propagation of α-synuclein were inhibited by CSB treatment. Notably, CSB alleviated behavioral deficits and neuropathological features, such as phospho-α-synuclein and astrogliosis, in A53T α-synuclein transgenic mice. These results indicate that CSB directly binds α-synuclein and inhibits its aggregation, thereby blocking α-synuclein cell-to-cell propagation.

Because coarseness has a remarkable effect on visual appearance, there has been an increasing demand for measuring quantitative coarseness based on an explicit algorithm, especially in industry. However, even in BYK-mac, a reliable measurement device for high correlation with visual inspection, its results are not clearly defined and not traceable to international standards. In addition, previous studies requiring a captured image of a sample that is sensitive to capturing conditions are not appropriate to apply to industrial sites. Therefore, in this paper, a novel method for predicting coarseness by measuring only the color and the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) is presented. The proposed method generates images using illumination optical analysis by applying the BRDF, which is insensitive to the capturing conditions, so it can be reliably applied to industrial sites with various measurement disturbances. The proposed coarseness prediction workflow was verified based on a comparison of the predicted coarseness values of 56 samples with seven levels of roughness for each of the eight colors and the measured values using BYK-mac. Images generated from illumination optical analysis through BRDF of the prepared sample showed lower brightness on the rougher surface, similar to the BRDF measurement results. The results of the measurement and comparison show that the coarseness orders for each color are similar to each other and that the coarseness variations according to roughness levels are also similar, with a coefficient of determination, R2, of 0.9374.

Background and objective: A notable proportion of patients with emergent large vessel occlusion experience malignant middle cerebral infarct (MMI) despite successful recanalization with thrombectomy. In this study, we aim to identify early predictors of MMI in patients successfully recanalized by thrombectomy. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed atotal of 144 anterior circulation emergent large vessel occlusion patients (90 males and 54 females; mean yr ± SD, 67.7 ± 13.2) who were successfully recanalized by thrombectomy (thrombolysis in cerebral infarction perfusion scale 2b or 3) in the cerebrovascular center of the Soonchunhyang University Bucheon Hospital in South Korea between January 2012 and September 2021. Using pretreatment CT angiography source images (CTA-SIs), collateral status was evaluated, and the Alberta stroke program early CT score (ASPECTS) was determined. Contrast accumulation (CA) was evaluated on non-contrast brain CT scans performed immediately after thrombectomy procedures. Logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic curve analyses were performed using SPSS software, version 26. Reduced amounts of aerosols blowing into the Yellow Sea (YS), owing to the temporary lockdown of factories in China during COVID-19, resulted in a 15% decrease in spring chlorophyll-a concentration (CHL) in March 2020 compared to its mean March values from 2003 to 2021. Particularly, the effect of land-based AOD is insignificant compared with that of atmospheric aerosols flowing into the YS, as indicated by the currents and wind directions. Hence, the main objective of this study was to understand the relationship between atmospheric aerosols and CHL by quantitatively considering relevant environmental changes using a Random Forest (RF) algorithm. Various input physical forcing variables to RF were employed, including aerosol optical depth (AOD), sea surface temperature (SST), mixed layer depth (MLD), wind divergence (WD), and total precipitation (TP). From the RF-based analysis, we estimated the relative contribution of each physical forcing variable to the difference in CHL during and after the COVID-19 lockdown period. The sensitivity of the RF model to changes in aerosol levels indicated positive effects of increased amounts of aerosols during spring blooms. Additionally, we calculated the quantitative contribution of aerosols to CHL changes. When SST was warmer and TP was lower than their climatology in March 2020, CHL increased by 0.22 mg m-3 and 0.02 mg m-3, respectively. Conversely, when MLD became shallower and AOD was lower than their climatology, CHL decreased as much as 0.01 mg m-3 and 0.20 mg m-3. Variations in WD caused no significant change in CHL. Overall, the specific estimations for reduced spring blooms were caused by a reduction in aerosols during the COVID-19 lockdown period. Furthermore, the RF developed in this study can be used to examine CHL changes and the relative role of significant environmental changes in biological blooms in the ocean for any normal year.

This study presents an efficient super-resolution (SR) method for targets observed by satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR). First, a small target image is extracted from a large-scale SAR image and undergoes proper preprocessing. The preprocessing step is adaptively designed depending on the types of movements of targets. Next, the principal scattering centers of targets are extracted using the compressive sensing technique. Subsequently, an impulse response function (IRF) of the satellite SAR system (IRF-S) is generated using a SAR image of a corner reflector located at the calibration site. Then, the spatial resolution of the IRF-S is improved by the spectral estimation technique. Finally, according to the SAR signal model, the super-resolved IRF-S is combined with the extracted scattering centers to generate a super-resolved target image. In our experiments, the SR capabilities for various targets were investigated using quantitative and qualitative analysis. Compared with conventional SAR SR methods, the proposed scheme exhibits greater robustness towards improvement of the spatial resolution of the target image when the degrees of SR are high. Additionally, the proposed scheme has faster computation time (CT) than other SR algorithms, irrespective of the degree of SR. The novelties of this study can be summarized as follows: (1) the practical design of an efficient SAR SR scheme that has robustness at a high SR degree; (2) the application of proper preprocessing considering the types of movements of targets (i.e., stationary, moderate motion, and complex motion) in SAR SR processing; (3) the effective evaluation of SAR SR capability using various metrics such as peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), structural similarity index (SSIM), focus quality parameters, and CT, as well as qualitative analysis.

Abstract This study analytically investigated the behavior of reinforced concrete frames with masonry infills. For the analysis, VecTor2, a nonlinear finite element analysis program that implements the Modified Compression Field Theory and Disturbed Stress Field Model, was used. To account for the slip behavior at the mortar joints in the masonry element, the hyperbolic Mohr–Coulomb yield criterion, defined as a function of cohesion and friction angle, was used. The analysis results showed that the lateral resistance and failure mode of the infilled frames were significantly affected by the thickness of the masonry infill, cohesion on the mortar joint–brick interface, and poor mortar filling (or gap) on the masonry boundary under the beam. Diagonal strut actions developed along two or three load paths on the mortar infill, including the backstay actions near the tension column and push-down actions near the compression columns. Such backstay and push-down actions increased the axial and shear forces of columns, and ultimately affect the strength, ductility, and failure mode of the infilled frames.

The penetration of PVs into the power grid is increasing day by day, as they are more economical and environment-friendly. However, due to the intrinsic intermittency in solar radiation and other meteorological factors, the generated power from PVs is uncertain and unstable. Therefore, accurate forecasting of power generation is considered one of the fundamental challenges in power system. In this paper, a deep-learning model based on two-stage attention mechanism over LSTM is proposed to forecast a day-ahead PV power. In addition, the Bayesian optimization algorithm is applied to obtain the optimal combination of hyper-parameters for the proposed deep-learning model. Various input features that can affect the PV power generation such as solar radiation, temperature, humidity, snowfall, albedo etc. are considered and their impact with respect to the attention mechanisms on the forecasted PV power is analyzed. The input consists of data from 21 PVs installed at different geographical locations in Germany. The proposed model is compared with state-of-the-art models such as LSTM-Attention, CNN-LSTM, and Ensemble model for day-ahead forecasting. The model is also compared with various single attention mechanisms such as Input-attention, SNAIL, Raffel, and Hierarchical attention etc. The proposed model outperforms the traditional methods in terms of accuracy, hence proving its efficiency. Forecasting Skill (FS) score of the proposed model is 0.4813 whereas 0.4427 is for the Ensemble model, which is the best among other state-of-the-art models. Root Mean Square (RMSE) and Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of the proposed model is 0.0638 and 0.0324 respectively, whereas those of the Ensemble model are 0.0685 and 0.0369 respectively.

In this article, we propose an effective scheme to generate an artificial training database (DB) to mitigate the deficiency in the amount of training DB for ship detection using satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. In the proposed scheme, SAR signatures of ship targets are first obtained from two different types of image: 1) Korea Multipurpose Satellite-5 images with automatic identification system information and 2) simulated SAR images that are acquired using electromagnetic numerical analysis. Then, the ship signatures are combined with sea clutter models to generate realistic SAR patches. For overall ship detection tasks (i.e., training and testing), the oriented bounding box concept was adopted to appropriately represent slender ship targets in SAR images. When compared with the rash collection of a large number of real SAR images, the proposed scheme is more efficient in terms of cost and time. Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed method can considerably aid in increasing the ship detection capacity of deep learning models. Thus, it is expected that the proposed scheme can be usefully exploited to solve the lack of the amount of training DB.

Recently, rapidly growing industry and abnormal climate change have generated high concentrations of fine dust. This fine dust settles on greenhouses and hinders photosynthesis of the plants within. In this study, the greenhouse environment was reproduced using fine dust devices, and the fine dust adhesion and washing efficiency were compared. The optimal coating agent was selected by performing a coating experiment to assess the changes in the light transmittance and contact angles of eight greenhouse coatings incorporating different coating agents. The most pronounced adhesion rate was observed in an ion humidification test for (NH4)2SO4. The coating agent with Teflon, which exhibited the largest contact angle in this study, had the highest washing efficiency, followed by the coating agent with the highest polydimethylsiloxane ratio using isopropyl alcohol (IPA) as a solvent, and the coating agent with the highest polydimethylsiloxane using water as a solvent. However, the ingredients added to the agents with Teflon or IPA were judged inappropriate for greenhouse use due to environmental reasons. Therefore, the coating agent with the highest polydimethylsiloxane using water as a solvent, which is the most suitable coating agent and satisfies both the washing efficiency and contact angle requirements, is expected to be used as a greenhouse coating agent to prevent light transmittance reduction in greenhouses due to fine dust accumulation.

Cerebral arteriovenous malformations (cAVMs) are traditionally considered congenital anomalies. The literature includes only two reported cases of de novo solitary cAVMs associated with liver cirrhosis (LC). Here, we report a unique case of multiple de novo cAVMs in a patient with alcoholic LC. Teaching point: In patients with potential risks for de novo cAVM, including liver cirrhosis, the possibility of multiple de novo cAVMs should be considered.

A small leak occurring on the surface of a fuel rod due to damage exposes UO2 to a steam atmosphere. During this time, fission gas trapped inside the fuel rod leaks out, and the gas leakage can be increased due to UO2 oxidation. Numerous studies have focused on the steam oxidation and its thermodynamic calculation in UO2. However, the thermodynamic calculation of the UO2 oxidation in a pressurized water reactor (PWR) environment has not been studied extensively. Moreover, the kinetics of the oxidation of UO2 pellet also has not been investigated. Therefore, in this study, the thermodynamics of UO2 oxidation under steam injection due to a damaged fuel rod in a PWR environment is studied. In addition, the diminishing radius of the UO2 pellet with time in the PWR environment was calculated through an experiment simulating the initial time of steam injection at the puncture.

In this study, a numerical investigation of the flow quality and total head loss of a large cavitation tunnel is conducted. Excluding the impeller, the entire tunnel is modeled, and calculations are conducted for the test section's maximum speed of 15 m/s. The numerical study showed that an edge chamfer eliminates the pressure drop in the test section, resulting in a constant cavitation number downstream, and that a diverging top diffuser, as opposed to a flat top, induces upward flow at the exit of the test section. Also, the effectiveness of the flow straightener and honeycomb in reducing turbulence has been validated. In the test section, the turbulence intensity is 0.10% and the uniformity is 0.20%. The 2nd corner has the highest head loss due to the shaft. Due to the relatively high speed, significant head losses are observed in the test section, diffuser, and first corner.

Seismic performance of a UPS through shaking table tests was investigated using the input acceleration time histories with scaling factors of 50%, 100%, and 200%. The first series consists of UPS specimens supported by snip single-corner rectangular pins, and the second series consists of UPS specimens supported by isolator systems. The UPS specimens in the second series significantly reduced the fundamental frequency, peak acceleration, and amplification factors but increased the damping ratio and displacement compared with those of the UPS specimens in the first series. The analytical results obtained from the analytical model agreed well with the experimental results.
