This paper presents a novel microwave sensor using optical activation for measuring in real-time the water contamination in crude oil or its derivatives. The sensor is constructed from an end-coupled microstrip resonator that is interconnected to two pairs of identical fractal structures based on Moore curves. Electromagnetic (EM) interaction between the fractal curves is mitigated using a T-shaped microstrip-stub to enhance the performance of the sensor. The gap in one pair of fractal curves is loaded with light dependent resistors (LDR) and the other pair with microwave chip capacitors. The chip capacitors were used to increase the EM coupling between the fractal gaps to realize a high Q-factor resonator that determines the sensitivity of the sensor. Empirical results presented here show that the insertion-loss of the sensor is affected by the change in LDR impedance when illuminated by light. This property is used to determine the amount of water contaminated oil. The sensitivity of the sensor was optimized using commercial 3D EM solver. The measurements were made by placing a 30 mm diameter petri dish holding the sample on top of the sensor. The petri dish was filled up to a height of 10 mm with the sample of water contaminated crude oil, and the measurements were done in the range between 0.76 GHz to 1.2 GHz. The Q-factor of the oil sample with no water contamination was 70 and the Q-factor declined to 20 for 100% contamination. The error in the measurements was less than 0.024%. The sensor has dimensions of 0.1270×0.1270×0.0040 and represents a new modality. Compared to existing techniques, the proposed sensor is simple to use, readily portable and is more sensitive.

In this work, electrodes based on laser-scribed reduced graphene oxide were fabricated using filter paper as the substrate. To fabricate the electrodes, a water suspension of graphene oxide was filtered to produce a continuous and uniform film of graphene oxide on the filter paper surface. Subsequently, a CO2 laser was used to "write" the working, counter and reference eelctroes by reducing graphene oxide in specific areas to define complete sensors. Referecnce electrodes were then coated with a commercial Ag/AgCl conductive paste to produce a quasi Ag/AgCl reference. As fabricated devices were employed as electrochemical sensors for detection of phosphate ions in water by employing the molybdenum blue method. This method exploits the reaction between molybdate and phosphate ions in acidic media leading to a Keggin-type complex (PMo12O3 40) which, being electrochemically active, enables the indiret detection of phosphate ions. Sensors exhibited high selectivity and sensitive detection of phosphate ions in a wide linear range, from 1 to 20 & mu;M; with a limit of detection of 0.4 & mu;M. To demonstrate that sensors could be utilized for in-situ phosphate ion detection, paper substrate was first pre-loaded with sul-phuric acid and molybdate ions. During analysis, these chemicals were then desorbed directly into the test sample eliminating the need for any kind of external manipulation or reagent addition. Thus, this paper presents the fabrication of a portable, easy-to-use, biodegradable and fast phosphate ions sensor for in situ and real-time monitoring of water quality.

This paper provides a survey on the adoption of LoRa in the agricultural field, and reviews state-of-the-art solutions for Smart Agriculture, analyzing the potential of this technology in different infield applications. In particular, we consider four reference scenarios, namely irrigation systems, plantation and crop monitoring, tree monitoring, and livestock monitoring, which exhibit heterogeneous requirements in terms of network bandwidth, density, sensors’ complexity, and energy demand, as well as latency in the decision process. We discuss how LoRa-based solutions can work in these scenarios, analyzing their scalability, interoperability, network architecture, and energy-efficiency. Finally, we present possible future research directions and point out some open issues which might become the main research trends for the next years.

The design of a high-efficiency Traveling Wave Tube (TWT) based on a non-conventional folded waveguide slow-wave structure (FW-SWS) operating over 34-36 GHz for naval and ground Ka-band radars is presented. The ridge vane-loaded FW structure allows a good compromise between high interaction impedance and wide bandwidth along with a low weight required for aircraft radar applications and a simple planar manufacturing process structure. Small signal simulations are performed with a custom interaction impedance evaluation program. The CST suite 2021 3D electromagnetic simulation code is used for the prediction of the dispersion diagram. Starting from a sensitivity analysis of the folded waveguide in terms of width, a high electronic efficiency value of 14.6% is obtained with a reduction in the width of 0.1 mm. To further improve electronic efficiency, a negative phase-velocity step tapering technique is applied and a value of 15.4% from 34 to 36 GHz is obtained. Finally, under an optimized beam voltage and current of 21 kV and 550 mA, respectively, a peak value of the output power of approximately 1.7 kW and an output power of 800 W with a duty cycle of 12% over the frequency band are obtained. Measurement results of the interaction impedance of a ridge vane-loaded FWG structure composed of a 10-period high-conductivity oxygen-free copper carried out according to the Langerstrom perturbation method, confirm the goodness of the simulation results.

This paper proposes a case study to show that the non-linear operation of a power inductor in a SMPS can induce instability of the control system leading to overheating of the inductor beyond its allowable temperature and to an excessive peak of the maximum current. The case study is performed by a commercial ferrite inductor employed in a synchronous boost converter encompassing a control system to adjust the duty cycle, assuring a constant output voltage. The thermal transient is described by the time domain waveforms and thermal images.

We present a novel configuration for an axial virtual cathode oscillator (Vircator) operating in the C-band and designed for high output power applications. In order to enhance the efficiency, we have employed a geometry with up to seven reflectors along the drift space. While in previous research works this optimization process has been performed only varying the reflectors radii while using a fixed distance between reflectors,in our work we propose an optimization in terms of both reflectors radii and distances. Our optimized structure for the axial Vircator is able to provide an efficiency up to 15.6% and an output power of 1.6 GW in the C-band, with a working voltage of 510 kV and a cathodic current of 24 kA.

Recently, the improvement of the semiconductor devices to achieve higher efficiency and higher power density has risen to interest. Si carbide and gallium nitride offer faster switching frequency and lower losses; however, the knowledge of the behaviour of these devices is not mature. In this paper, a system for fast charging of batteries for electric vehicles based on an isolated DC-DC converter equipped with both SiC and GaN devices is presented and an interesting experimental comparison among these two technologies will be given in terms of dynamic performances, electromagnetic compatibility, stability, efficiency, and so on.

This paper presents the design and characterization of a miniaturized wearable electronic system for photoplethysmography. The system is conceived with the purpose of monitoring people during their normal duties or during physical activity. An in-depth investigation of its performance has been carried out to address the main parameters affecting signal quality. Moreover, an investigation of the best body measurement location has been assessed.

The paper deals with the control of a quadratic boost converter supplied by low-voltage energy sources, such as photovoltaic panels, fuel cells, or batteries. The control scheme consists of two control loops. A min-type controller governs the inner loop to force the current state of the nominal model to converge in a neighborhood of the equilibrium state. The external loop processes the output tracking error using an integrator, and it allows reconfiguring the converter's working point by changing the equilibrium state given in the input to the internal loop. This configuration assures both zero tracking error of the output voltage and robustness against load and input voltage variations and converter parameter uncertainties. The stability of the whole system is investigated using the hybrid system framework. The proposed control technique has been tested experimentally in a suitably developed (low-cost) setup, and the results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

The increasing interest in innovative solutions for health and physiological monitoring has recently fostered the development of smaller biomedical devices. These devices are capable of recording an increasingly large number of biosignals simultaneously, while maximizing the user’s comfort. In this study, we have designed and realized a novel wearable multisensor ring-shaped probe that enables synchronous, real-time acquisition of photoplethysmographic (PPG) and galvanic skin response (GSR) signals. The device integrates both the PPG and GSR sensors onto a single probe that can be easily placed on the finger, thereby minimizing the device footprint and overall size. The system enables the extraction of various physiological indices, including heart rate (HR) and its variability, oxygen saturation (SpO2), and GSR levels, as well as their dynamic changes over time, to facilitate the detection of different physiological states, e.g., rest and stress. After a preliminary SpO2 calibration procedure, measurements have been carried out in laboratory on healthy subjects to demonstrate the feasibility of using our system to detect rapid changes in HR, skin conductance, and SpO2 across various physiological conditions (i.e., rest, sudden stress-like situation and breath holding). The early findings encourage the use of the device in daily-life conditions for real-time monitoring of different physiological states.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN will undergo major upgrades to increase the instantaneous luminosity up to 5-7.5×1034 cm-2s-1. This High Luminosity upgrade of the LHC (HL-LHC) will deliver a total of 3000-4000 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13-14 TeV. To cope with these challenging environmental conditions, the strip tracker of the CMS experiment will be upgraded using modules with two closely-spaced silicon sensors to provide information to include tracking in the Level-1 trigger selection. This paper describes the performance, in a test beam experiment, of the first prototype module based on the final version of the CMS Binary Chip front-end ASIC before and after the module was irradiated with neutrons. Results demonstrate that the prototype module satisfies the requirements, providing efficient tracking information, after being irradiated with a total fluence comparable to the one expected through the lifetime of the experiment. This work proposes a comparison among GaN and SiC device main parameters measured with a dedicated and low-cost embedded system, employing an STM32 microcontroller designed to the purpose. The system has the advantage to avoid the use of expensive laboratory measurement equipment to test the devices, allowing to obtain their behavior in operating conditions. The following KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) are measured and critically compared: threshold voltage, on-resistance and input capacitance. All the measurements are carried out in a short time interval and on a wide range of switching frequencies, ranging from 10 kHz to 1 MHz. This investigation is focused on the deviation of the figures of merit when the switching frequency changes, since it is crucial for wide-bandgap devices. The devised, low-cost, microcontroller unit allows high flexibility and system portability, while the employed equivalent-time sampling technique overcomes some issues related to the need of high sampling frequency. It allows good performances with common microcontroller embedded AD converters. To validate the proposed system, the obtained results have been compared with the time-domain waveforms acquired with a traditional laboratory oscilloscope and a study of the system’s measurement errors has been carried out. Results show that GaN devices achieve a higher efficiency with respect to SiC devices in the considered range of switching frequencies. The on-resistance exhibited by GaN devices shows, as expected, an increase with frequency, which happens to switching losses, too. On the other hand, GaN devices are more sensitive to parasitic effects and the high dV/dt, due to the reduced switching times, can excite unwanted ringing phenomena.

The present work aims to implement a calorimetric method to measure the power dissipated during MOSFET switching in a high efficiency LLC resonant converter. The power dissipated from switching can significantly impact the total power dissipated by the device and consequent efficiency, so correct quantification is fundamental for optimizing the devices and increasing the efficiency of the converters. In LLC converters, this type of dissipated power cannot be measured with standard methods such as measurement with oscilloscopes as some of the energy that is recovered and not dissipated. The calorimetric method requires reasonably accurate measurement of thermal resistance and the temperature of the die. To facilitate accurate temperature measurement, we used a device in an ACEPACK™ SMIT package module, which incorporates a complete half-bridge and an NTC thermistor for reading the temperature.

The paper focuses on comparing applicability, tuning, and performance of different controllers implemented and tested on a finless rocket during its boost phase. The objective was to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of each controller, such that the most appropriate one would then be developed and implemented in real-time in the finless rocket. The compared controllers were Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR), Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG), and Proportional Integral Derivative (PID). To control the attitude of the rocket, emphasis is given to the Thrust Vector Control (TVC) component (sub-system) through the gimballing of the rocket engine. The launcher is commanded through the control input thrust gimbal angle δ, while the output parameter is expressed in terms of the pitch angle θ. After deriving a linearized state–space model, rocket stability is addressed before controller implementation and testing. The comparative study showed that both LQR and LQG track pitch angle changes rapidly, thus providing efficient closed-loop dynamic tracking. Tuning of the LQR controller, through the Q and R weighting matrices, illustrates how variations directly affect performance of the closed-loop system by varying the values of the feedback gain (K). The LQG controller provides a more realistic profile because, in general, not all variables are measurable and available for feedback. However, disturbances affecting the system are better handled and reduced with the PID controller, thus overcoming steady-state errors due to aerodynamic and model uncertainty. Overall controller performance is evaluated in terms of overshoot, settling and rise time, and steady-state error.

Al giorno d'oggi, lo sviluppo di algoritmi si concentra su calcoli efficienti in termini di prestazioni ed efficienza energetica. Tecnologie come il field programmable gate array (FPGA) e il system on chip (SoC) basato su FPGA (FPGA/SoC) hanno dimostrato la loro capacità di accelerare applicazioni di calcolo intensive risparmiando al contempo il consumo energetico, grazie alla loro capacità di elevato parallelismo e riconfigurazione dell'architettura. Attualmente, i cicli di progettazione esistenti per FPGA/SoC sono lunghi, a causa della complessità dell'architettura. Pertanto, per colmare il divario tra le applicazioni e le architetture FPGA/SoC e ottenere un design hardware efficiente per l'analisi delle immagini e altri applicazioni altamente demandanti utilizzando lo strumento di sintesi di alto livello, vengono prese in considerazione due strategie complementari: tecniche ad hoc e stima delle prestazioni. Per quanto riguarda le tecniche ad-hoc, tre applicazioni molto impegnative sono state accelerate attraverso gli strumenti HLS: discriminatore di forme di impulso per i raggi cosmici, classificazione automatica degli insetti e re-ranking per il recupero delle informazioni, sottolineando i vantaggi quando questo tipo di applicazioni viene attraversato da tecniche di compressione durante il targeting dispositivi FPGA/SoC. Inoltre, in questa tesi viene proposto uno stimatore delle prestazioni per l'accelerazione hardware per prevedere efficacemente l'utilizzo delle risorse e la latenza per FPGA/SoC, costruendo un ponte tra l'applicazione e i domini architetturali. Lo strumento integra modelli analitici per la previsione delle prestazioni e un motore design space explorer (DSE) per fornire approfondimenti di alto livello agli sviluppatori di hardware, composto da due motori indipendenti: DSE basato sull'ottimizzazione a singolo obiettivo e DSE basato sull'ottimizzazione evolutiva multiobiettivo. Nowadays, the development of algorithms focuses on performance-efficient and energy-efficient computations. Technologies such as field programmable gate array (FPGA) and system on chip (SoC) based on FPGA (FPGA/SoC) have shown their ability to accelerate intensive computing applications while saving power consumption, owing to their capability of high parallelism and reconfiguration of the architecture. Currently, the existing design cycles for FPGA/SoC are time-consuming, owing to the complexity of the architecture. Therefore, to address the gap between applications and FPGA/SoC architectures and to obtain an efficient hardware design for image analysis and highly demanding applications using the high-level synthesis tool, two complementary strategies are considered: ad-hoc techniques and performance estimator. Regarding ad-hoc techniques, three highly demanding applications were accelerated through HLS tools: pulse shape discriminator for cosmic rays, automatic pest classification, and re-ranking for information retrieval, emphasizing the benefits when this type of applications are traversed by compression techniques when targeting FPGA/SoC devices. Furthermore, a comprehensive performance estimator for hardware acceleration is proposed in this thesis to effectively predict the resource utilization and latency for FPGA/SoC, building a bridge between the application and architectural domains. The tool integrates analytical models for performance prediction, and a design space explorer (DSE) engine for providing high-level insights to hardware developers, composed of two independent sub-engines: DSE based on single-objective optimization and DSE based on evolutionary multi-objective optimization.

A method for estimating the current flowing through a non-linear power inductor operating in a DC/DC converter is proposed. The knowledge of such current, that cannot be calculated in closed form as for the linear inductor, is crucial for the design of the converter. The proposed method is based on a third-order polynomial model of the inductor, already developed by the authors; it is exploited to solve the differential equation of the inductor and to implement a flux model in a circuit simulator. The method allows the estimation of the current up to saturation, intended as the point at which the differential inductance is reduced to half of its maximum value. The current profile depends also on the inductor temperature. Based on this, the influence of core temperature on the conduction time of the power switch was determined. This study shows that the exploitation of saturation requires a proper value of the conduction time value that depends on the temperature. The theoretical analysis has been experimentally verified on a boost converter and is valid for the entire class of DC-DC converters in which the power inductor is subjected to a constant voltage for a given time. The simulations agree with the experimental data from a case study concerning conduction time and temperature.

This is in stark contrast to the little effort that has been devoted to the improvement of germanium detectors, in particular for synchrotron applications. Germanium detectors have better energy resolution and are more efficient in detecting high energy photons than silicon detectors. In this context, the detector consortium of the European project LEAPS-INNOV has set an ambitious R&D program devoted to the development of a new generation of multi-element monolithic germanium detectors for X-ray detection. In order to improve the performance of the detector under development, simulations of the different detector design options have been performed. In this contribution, the efforts in terms of R&D are outlined with a focus on the modelization of the detector geometry and first performance results. These performance results show that a signal-to-background ratio larger than 1000 can be achieved in the energy range of interest from 5 keV to 100 keV., Published by North-Holland Publ. The permi)ivity of a material is an important parameter to characterize the degree of polarization of a material and identify components and impurities. This paper presents a non-invasive measurement technique to characterize materials in terms of their permi)ivity based on a modified metamaterial unit-cell sensor. The sensor consists of a complementary split-ring resonator (C-SRR), but its fringe electric field is contained with a conductive shield to intensify the normal component of the electric field. It is shown that by tightly electromagnetically coupling opposite sides of the unit-cell sensor to the input/output microstrip feedlines, two distinct resonant modes are excited. Perturbation of the fundamental mode is exploited here for determining the permi)ivity of materials. The sensitivity of the modified metamaterial unit-cell sensor is enhanced four-fold by using it to construct a tri-composite split-ring resonator (TC-SRR). The measured results confirm that the proposed technique provides an accurate and inexpensive solution to determine the permi)ivity of materials.

Femtosecond transient soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is a very promising technique that can be employed at X-ray free-electron lasers (FELs) to investigate out-of-equilibrium dynamics for material and energy research. Here, a dedicated setup for soft X-rays available at the Spectroscopy and Coherent Scattering (SCS) instrument at the European X-ray Free-Electron Laser (European XFEL) is presented. It consists of a beam-splitting off-axis zone plate (BOZ) used in transmission to create three copies of the incoming beam, which are used to measure the transmitted intensity through the excited and unexcited sample, as well as to monitor the incoming intensity. Since these three intensity signals are detected shot by shot and simultaneously, this setup allows normalized shot-by-shot analysis of the transmission. For photon detection, an imaging detector capable of recording up to 800 images at 4.5 MHz frame rate during the FEL burst is employed, and allows a photon-shot-noise-limited sensitivity to be approached. For instance, one of the major limitations of XAFS experiment is the performance of the detectors. In order to be able to measure more challenging samples and to cope with the very high photon flux of the current and future (diffraction limited) sources, technological developments of detectors are necessary. In this framework, the germanium detector developed in the European project LEAPS-INNOV aims at improving several technological aspects. This type of detector represents a very important class of instruments for X-ray spectroscopy due to the fact that they enable to detect efficiently photons of considerable higher energy with respect to silicon detectors. The objective of this project consists in pushing the detector performance beyond the state-of-the-art. The Shunt-LDO regulator has been integrated in the ATLAS and the CMS pixel detector RD53 front-end chip to implement the serial powering scheme which both experiments have chosen as the baseline option for the HL-LHC upgrade. The performance of the integrated regulators has been characterized and specific design challenges have been identified which are related to layout parasitics and shallow trench isolation (STI) stress effects. In addition the functionality of circuits which address crucial system level aspects like the protection against overvoltage/overload has been verified.

A variety of mathematical models of the cardiovascular system have been suggested over several years in order to describe the time-course of a series of physiological variables (i.e. heart rate, cardiac output, arterial pressure) relevant for the compensation mechanisms to perturbations, such as severe haemorrhage. The current study provides a simple but realistic mathematical description of cardiovascular dynamics that may be useful in the assessment and prognosis of hemorrhagic shock. The present work proposes a first version of a differential-algebraic equations model, the model dynamical ODE model for haemorrhage (dODEg). The model consists of 10 differential and 14 algebraic equations, incorporating 61 model parameters. This model is capable of replicating the changes in heart rate, mean arterial pressure and cardiac output after the onset of bleeding observed in four experimental animal preparations and fits well to the experimental data. By predicting the time-course of the physiological response after haemorrhage, the dODEg model presented here may be of significant value for the quantitative assessment of conventional or novel therapeutic regimens. The model may be applied to the prediction of survivability and to the determination of the urgency of evacuation towards definitive surgical treatment in the operational setting.
