Due to the rising concern about heavy metals in settled dust, a risk assessment of Arsenic (As), Cadmium (Cd), Copper (Cu), Lead (Pb), Nickel (Ni) and Zinc (Zn) has been conducted using multiple exposure paths, including oral ingestion, direct skin contact, and inhalation of dust around lake Urmia in Iran for the time period of 2020. Metal concentrations were assessed and sources were identified based on the enrichment factor and Pearson correlation coefficient. The metal concentrations were in the following order: Zn > Cu > Ni > Pb > Cd > As with arithmetic means of 3.5, 4.8, 57, 33, 25 and 83 mg/kg, respectively, which are within the range of Iran-EPA soil guideline values. A very weak correlation (r < 0.7) was found between the studied elements. The average enrichment factor (EF) for As, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn was 0.7, 4, 1.8, 0.5, 3.2 and 0.8, respectively, suggests minor enrichment for metals and influence from anthropogenic activity. The lifetime cancer risks (LTCR) due to exposure (three routes of inhalation) to metals were in the negligible risk category. The oral route had the highest hazard index (HI) between all of exposure paths. The HI was less than 1 for all three exposure paths. Moreover, the sensitivity analysis showed that exposure duration (ED) for As and Ni and exposure frequency (EF) for Cd and Pb had the highest impacts on LTCR values. Therefore, this study suggests the continuous monitoring of heavy metals in settled dust around the Lake Urmia as it is associated with the high health risk for the neighbourhood in the Lake Urmia's basin. Polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) are major airborne pollutants. However, their assessment has mostly been restricted to 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). In this work, 76 PACs including PAHs, oxy-PAHs, nitro-PAHs, azaarenes, and thiaarenes were monitored in an urban residential environment. A short-term campaign was conducted at three dwellings in Strasbourg, France, with low-volume PM10 samplers operated simultaneously outdoors and indoors. Household dust was also sampled in these dwellings. The PACs of interest were extracted by pressurized liquid extraction in toluene and acetonitrile, and quantified by GC-MS/MS. The total concentration of PACs in PM10 was between 67 and 179 ng·m−3 outdoors and between 62 and 401 ng·m−3 indoors. Total PAC levels in settled dust varied from 3.5 to 31 μg·g−1, and from 0.44 to 3.88 μg·m−2. Due to the high influence of surfaces dust load, the interpretation of PAC concentrations in settled dust was different if mass concentrations or surface concentrations were studied. This sampling campaign concurrent with a winter pollution event led to exceptionally high concentrations of PACs. The samples of this work set maximum values for PAHs and oxy-PAHs in airborne particles among recent European studies, and an absolute maximum value for azaarenes. However, the acute short-term exposure of Strasbourg inhabitants to PACs during this pollution event is balanced by the normal concentrations of PACs in household dust, which characterizes better the long-term exposure. This study addresses the potential impact of Lake Urmia on heavy metals (HMs) concentrations in the air and soil of the northern region of Lake Urmia in North West of Iran, highlighting significant environmental and health implications. The results showed different concentration levels for Arsenic (As), Cadmium (Cd), Chromium (Cr), and Lead (Pb) in soil and settled dust particles near Lake Urmia, and their concentrations exceeded recommended thresholds for Cr and Pb in some areas. Spatial distribution analysis indicated that local factors significantly affect contamination patterns, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions.The study employed enrichment factor (EF) assessment and potential ecological risk (PER) index to identify pollution sources and evaluate associated ecological risks. The results indicated moderate to severe pollution levels in specific regions, particularly for Pb and Cd. Health risk assessments suggest that non-carcinogenic risks are generally below hazardous levels; however, concerns remain for Cr and As exposure.Future studies should focus on long-term trends, source apportionment methodologies, and health effects of heavy metal exposure to develop effective pollution management strategies. Background and Objective: Given the concern about the presence of microplastics in the air and settled dust, and the lack of a standard approach for their detection, it is necessary to investigate the methods and techniques used to study this type of pollution in Iran. Therefore, this study aimed to systematically review the methods and techniques used for sampling, quantification, and characterization of microplastics in the air and settled dust in indoor and outdoor environments in Iran. Materials and Methods: In this systematic review, the keywords Microplastic*, Air*, Atmosphere*, Dust, Indoor, Outdoor, Iran, and their corresponding Persian equivalents were searched until Dec 1, 2023, in Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar, Magiran, and SID databases. Obtained articles from the databases were analyzed in order to find the eligible ones. Results: Overall, 175 articles were found in the initial search, and after removing the duplicates and nonrelevant, 13 eligible articles were included in the study. In most of the studies, the samples were digested with H2 O2, and the microplastics were mainly analyzed using a variety of microscopes and µRaman spectroscopy. The abundance of microplastics in the indoor environment was much higher than in the outdoor environment. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that there is the required equipment for the sampling and analysis of microplastics in air and settled dust in Iran, and these pollutants have been detected in both indoor and outdoor environments. Metals associated with indoor dust are shown to be a key pollutant and resuspension of dust in critical microenvironments like schools can lead to detrimental health effects to children. The present study was carried out from December 2021 to November 2022 to examine variations in metal concentration with season and associated health risks from school dust in Agra, India. Dust samples were digested in aqua-regia followed by analysis for metals concentration by ICP-AES. Geo-accumulation (Igeo), pollution (PI), integrated pollution (IPI), and pollution load (PLI) indexes were used to determine metals contamination, Principal Component Analysis and Cluster Analysis were employed for the identification of causative sources of metals while USEPA health risk assessment models were utilized to assess the health risks in children. The results indicated that in all seasons settled dust of roadside schools of both regions accumulated higher concentrations of metals as compared to residential schools except semi-urban schools in post-monsoon season. The total metal concentration (mgkg−1) in school dust samples of Agra ranged from 62507–85037, 72477–97022, 48912–66083 to 58605–92290 in winter, summer, monsoon, and post-monsoon respectively. In all seasons, the PLI values of settled dust of all schools ranged from less than one to greater than unity which indicates pollution levels by metals. Further, Igeo values revealed that school dusts were moderately and heavily contaminated by Cd in all seasons. The assessment of health risk specifies ingestion as the main exposure route followed by dermal intake and inhalation. The Hazard Index value for all examined metals was lower than the safer limit of one while on the contrary for Pb, total cancer risk was higher the than safer limit via inhalation pathway. The findings of the study indicate that more investigations are required on potentially toxic metal contaminations in schools of Agra, especially for Pb, Cd and Cr.

As an important storage medium of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOC) in indoor environments, house dust has been extensively used to assess the pollution level of indoor SVOC. SVOC in house dust are commonly quantified using solvent-extraction methods, which are however solvent-consuming, time-consuming and laborious. Thermal desorption (TD, solvent-free and easy-to-use) is a good alternative to solvent extractions, but its performance for analyzing house dust is still unverified. Therefore, we proposed a TD-based method for quantifying SVOC in house dust by incorporating the TD technique with GC-MS. Laboratory experiments (48 samples with high SVOC concentrations) and field-test experiments (12 samples with low SVOC concentrations) were performed to justify the proposed method by comparing its results to those of a traditional solvent-extraction method (Soxhlet extraction). For laboratory dusts, the accuracy (relative deviation < 20%) and repeatability (relative standard deviation < 13%) of the TD-based method were comparable to the solvent-extraction method. For field-test dusts, higher SVOC concentrations were typically obtained by the TD-based method, implying its superior performance. These results gave evident confidence in the performance of the TD-based method, which facilitated the simple, solvent-free and accurate quantification of SVOC in house dust. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Comprehensive studies on emerging contaminants like volatile methyl siloxanes in settled dust from different micro-environments are still limited. In this study, concentrations and distribution of cyclic volatile methyl siloxanes (CVMSs) including D3, D4, D5, and D6 were examined in indoor dust samples collected from various micro-environments in northern and central Vietnam. Concentrations of total CVMSs in the dust samples ranged from 86.0 to 5890 (median 755) ng/g and decreased in the order: waste processing workshops (median 1560; range 329–5890) > common houses (650; 115–1680) > university classrooms (480; 86.0–1540) > vehicle repair shops (295; 126–1950) ng/g. This observation suggests that informal waste processing activities are sources of CVMSs. Among the studied CVMSs, D5 was the most predominant compound (41 ± 14%), followed by D6 (26 ± 13%), D4 (23 ± 12%), and D3 (11 ± 11%). Moderate positive correlations between D3/D4, D4/D5, and D5/D6 were found. Median daily intake doses of D3, D4, D5, and D6 through dust ingestion were 0.016, 0.051, 0.11, and 0.054 ng/kg/d, respectively, which were comparable to water consumption and markedly lower than the air inhalation pathway. Six phthalates: dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), di(n-butyl) phthalate (DnBP), butyl benzyl phthalate (BBzP), di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), and di(n-octyl) phthalate (DOP) in settled dust on different indoor surfaces were measured in 30 university dormitories. A Monte Carlo simulation was used to estimate college students' exposure via inhalation, non-dietary ingestion, and dermal absorption based on measured concentrations. The detection frequencies for targeted phthalates were more than 80% except for DEP (roughly 70%). DEHP was the most prevalent compound in the dust samples, followed by DnBP, DOP, and BBzP. Statistical analysis suggested that phthalate levels were higher in bedside dust than that collected from table surfaces, indicating a nonuniform distribution of dust-phase phthalates in the sleep environment. The simulation showed that the median DMP daily intake was 0.81 μg/kg/day, which was the greatest of the targeted phthalates. The identification of sources that produce particulate atmospheric matter (PM) can be of paramount importance for the reduction of air pollution and the development of environmental policies. In order to identify the environmental impact resulting from industrial metallurgical activities in the Metropolitan Region of Vitória, ES, Brazil, it was investigated the contribution to PM that result from industrial activities and from local natural sources. For this purpose, analytical techniques were used to identify the apportionment of sources that contribute to the formation of insoluble settled dust collected at two points near the city of Vitória. Samples of soil, iron ore, limestone, coal, iron ore pellets, sinter, coke, slag, environmental samples of settled dust, and samples representative of the actual flows of materials used in an integrated steel mill were analyzed. Physicochemical characterizations, based on X-ray diffraction and 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy of ferruginous compounds found in sources and receptor samples, revealed the presence of highly crystallized hematite and low crystallized hematite. The latter is primarily found in soil samples, while well-crystallized hematite is found in natural samples from iron ores or after thermo-chemical processes applied during the industrial transformation of raw materials, as it happens during the production of pellets. Ferrous crystallographic forms α-FeOOH and Fe5HO8·4H2O, observed in environmental and soil samples, were also found in samples from industrial sources. Source apportionment of carbon based on the IMPROVE_A protocol for thermal/optical carbon analysis showed the participation of the elementary carbon fractions, separating contributions originated from coke and coal sources in the environmental samples. These results allowed a significant reduction of collinearity between source profiles in the application of the chemical mass balance receptor model "EPA-CMB8.2" receptor model. Consequently, it was possible to distinguish sources that process mainly ferrous and carbonaceous materials, identifying the contribution of different sources to the settled dust collected. Settled dust samples from Vietnamese end-of-life vehicle (ELV) processing, urban, and rural areas were analyzed for polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and other current-use brominated flame retardants (BFRs). PBDE levels found in dust samples collected from ELV workshops (median 390; range 120–520 ng/g) and nearby living areas (110; 36–650 ng/g) were generally higher than those in common house dust (25–170 ng/g). BDE-209 was the most predominant congener detected in almost all the samples, indicating extensive application of products containing deca-BDE mixtures. The dust samples from ELV workplaces showed a more abundance of lower brominated congeners (e.g., tetra- to hexa-BDEs) that may originate from car interior materials treated by penta-BDE formulations. Concentrations of other BFRs decreased in the order urban > rural > ELV dust, reflecting the current use of these compounds in new consumer products. Decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) and 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)ethane (BTBPE) were the major alternative BFRs. Daily intake doses and hazard indexes of PBDEs and some other BFRs through dust ingestion were estimated and showed acceptable levels of risk. However, more comprehensive risk assessment considering multiple exposure pathways should be performed, especially for ELV workers and children in the ELV processing and urban areas. Background and Objective: Heavy metal (HM) pollution of settled dust on the interior surfaces of elementary schools may affect the health of young students; hence, the health risk of such pollution should be assessed. Therefore, the aims of this study were to measure the content of heavy metals in the settled dust in the indoor of elementary schools in Bandar Abbas and to assess the attributed health risks. Materials and Methods: In this study, dust samples were collected from the interior surfaces of elementary schools in Bandar Abbas. Settled dust samples were digested using aqua regia solution and then their metals contents were measured using ICP-OES. To assess the health risk attributed to this pollution, daily intake doses through ingestion, inhalation and skin absorption routes were estimated. Then, non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks were calculated considering the daily intake doses and toxicity factors. Results: The average concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, nickel and lead in settled dust were 5.45, 0.58, 11.44, 69.72, 83.95 and 66.72 mg/kg, respectively. The non-carcinogenic risk level for all metals was below threshold, while the carcinogenic risk level for arsenic (2.18×10-6) exceeded the threshold. Conclusion: This study showed that the settled dust in elementary schools of Bandar Abbas is polluted with various levels of heavy metals. Health risk assessment showed that the exposure to dust containing heavy metals in the elementary schools of Bandar Abbas does not pose significant non-carcinogenic risk, but the carcinogenic risk of As exceeded the threshold limit and should be considered.

An analytical method for detecting flame retardants was slightly modified and optimized for the simultaneous determination of 11 organophosphate esters (OPEs) and 26 polyfluoralkyl substances (PFASs) contained in dust. All the analytes were determined in HPLC/MS–MS, and OPEs were also analyzed in GC/MS, and the results were compared. The study was conducted through the investigation of the Standard Reference Material SRM 2585 of the National Institute of Standard and Technology (NIST). The results were compared with the available reference mass fraction reported in the NIST certificate. The mass fraction obtained for the other OPEs and PFASs was compared to available data in the literature. After verifying the reliability of the results, the method was applied to environmental samples of settled dust, collected in four workplaces, where OPE and PFAS content is expected to be higher than in house dust: a mechanical workshop, an electronic repair center, a disassembly site, and a shredding site of two electronic waste recycling plants. By analyzing both PFASs and OPEs in the same samples, the present work demonstrated that the selected working places were more polluted in OPEs than houses; on the contrary, PFAS content in house dust proved to be more than ten times higher than that in workplaces. Additional research is necessary to confirm these data. Nevertheless, because this preliminary study showed not negligible concentrations of OPEs in some workplaces and of PFASs in houses, their monitoring should be extended to other domestic and selected working sites. BackgroundSettled airborne dust is used as a surrogate for airborne exposure in studies that explore indoor microbes. In order to determine whether detecting differences in dust environments would depend on the sampler type, we compared different passive, settled dust sampling approaches with respect to displaying qualitative and quantitative aspects of the bacterial and fungal indoor microbiota.ResultsSettled dust sampling approaches-utilizing plastic petri dishes, TefTex material, and electrostatic dustfall collectors (EDCs)-were evaluated in indoor spaces in the USA and Finland and in an experimental chamber study. The microbial content was analyzed with quantitative PCR (qPCR) to quantify total bacterial and fungal biomass and through high-throughput sequencing to examine bacterial community composition. Bacterial composition and diversity were similar within a sampling environment regardless of the sampler type. The sampling environment was the single largest predictor of microbial community composition within a study, while sampler type was found to have much less predictive power. Quantitative analyses in indoor spaces indicated highest yields using a petri dish approach, followed by sampling with EDCs and TefTex. The highest correlations between duplicate samples were observed for EDC and petri dish approaches, indicating greater experimental repeatability for these sampler types. For the EDC samples, it became apparent that, due to the fibrous nature of the material, a rigorous extraction protocol is crucial to obtain optimal yields and stable, repeatable results.ConclusionsCorrelations between sampler types were strong both in compositional and quantitative terms, and thus, the particular choice of passive settled dust sampler is not likely to strongly alter the overall conclusion of a study that aims to characterize dust across different environments. Microbial cell abundances determined from settled dust varied with the use of different sampling approaches, and thus, consistency in the method is necessary to allow for absolute comparisons within and among studies. Considering practical aspects, petri dishes were found to be an inexpensive, simple, and feasible approach that showed the highest quantitative determinations under typical building conditions, though the choice of sampler will ultimately depend on study logistics and characteristics such as low- or high-exposure settings.

Résumé: Le lindane est un insecticide organochloré, aujourd'hui interdit, mais largement utilisé au XXe siècle pour le traitement des cultures agricoles et du bois, ou en tant qu'antiparasitaire en médecine humaine et vétérinaire. La mesure actuelle de sa concentration dans l'air extérieur ou intérieur montre une présence quasi systématique et atteste de sa rémanence dans l'environnement. Ainsi, lors de la campagne nationale de l'Observatoire de la qualité de l'air intérieur (OQAI) menée dans un échantillon représentatif du parc des écoles de France métropolitaine entre 2013 et 2017, le lindane a été détecté dans l'air intérieur et dans les poussières déposées au sol de 100 % et 98 % des écoles respectivement (médianes respectivement égales à 1,4 ng/m3 et 36 ng/g de poussières). La recherche des déterminants de la masse totale de lindane dans l'environnement intérieur montre que celle-ci est à la fois liée à l'environnement extérieur, plus précisément à la présence à moins de 2 km de terres agricoles possiblement contaminées par des usages agricoles passés, et à l'ancienneté du bâtiment qui traduit de possibles traitements anciens du bois : charpente et mobilier. Les autres facteurs associés à des concentrations plus élevées en lindane sont la présence de tapis/moquette et l'absence de faux-plafond, et les facteurs qui les diminuent sont un renouvellement de l'air plus élevé et un nettoyage du sol et du mobilier plus fréquent. Lindane is an organochlorine insecticide, widely used in the 20th century for crop treatment, as a wood preservative, or for human and veterinary pest control. Although now banned, lindane is still detected in indoor and outdoor air due to its persistence in the environment. As part of the nationwide survey carried out by the French Observatory of indoor air quality in a representative sample of schools between 2013 and 2017, lindane was detected in indoor air and in settled dust in 100% and 98% of schools, respectively; medians were equal to 1.4 ng/m3 and 36 ng/g of dust, respectively. The determinants of the total mass of lindane in classrooms are both the outdoor environment, more precisely, the presence around the building (< 2 km) of agricultural soils contaminated by past lindane use, and the building itself, whose age is likely to be associated with historical indoor wood preservation (roof and furniture). Additional factors either promote higher indoor concentrations of lindane, such as carpets and rugs and the lack of ceiling tiles, or decrease its indoor concentrations, such as a higher air change rate and a more frequent cleaning of floor and furniture. Abstract Background Poultry houses are often highly contaminated with dust, which might contain considerable amounts of microorganisms and endotoxins. The concentrations of microorganisms and endotoxins in dust from laying hen houses in Egypt are unknown. However, to estimate the risks for birds, the environment, and people working in laying hen houses, it is important to gather information about the composition of these dusts. Here we report the microbial loads, the occurrence of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria, and endotoxin concentrations in dust samples from 28 laying hen farms in Dakahliya Governorate, Egypt, and discuss the results relevant to the literature. Results Pooled settled dust samples (n = 28) were analyzed for total viable counts of bacteria and fungi (CFU/g), the occurrence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae, Salmonella spp., and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and endotoxin concentrations (ng/g). The means and standard deviations of total viable counts were 7.10 × 108 ± 2.55 × 109 CFU/g for bacteria and 5.37 × 106 ± 7.26 × 106 CFU/g for fungi. Endotoxin levels varied from 2.9 × 104 to 6.27 × 105 ng/g. None of the tested samples contained Salmonella spp. or MRSA. In contrast, by direct plating, Enterobacteriaceae were found frequently (57%; n = 16), and suspected ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae occurred in 21% (n = 6) of the sampled barns. Using an enrichment method, the detection of Enterobacteriaceae and suspected ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae increased to 20 and 16 positive barns, respectively. Taking results from both methods into account, Enterobacteriaceae and suspected ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae were detected in 23 barns Overall, 100 ESBL suspected isolates (Escherichia coli, n = 64; Enterobacter cloacae, n = 20; and Klebsiella pneumoniae n = 16) were identified to species level by MALDI-TOF MS. Isolates from 20 barns (71% positive barns) were confirmed as ESBL producing Enterobacteriaceae by the broth microdilution test. Conclusions Dust in Egyptian laying hen houses contains high concentrations of microorganisms and endotoxins, which might impair the health of birds and farmers when inhaled. Furthermore, laying hens in Egypt seem to be a reservoir for ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae. Thus, farmers are at risk of exposure to ESBL-producing bacteria, and colonized hens might transmit these bacteria into the food chain.

The occurrence and distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in a city of Central China were determined in the settled dust and its extracted water phase from different land use types and bus stops in Nanchang City. The physicochemical properties of its water extracted dissolved organic matter (WEOM) were characterized to investigate the effect of fluorescence organic matter on the dust-water partitioning coefficients (Kd) using three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy combined parallel factor analysis. Results showed that the range of ∑PAHs in settled dust and the extracted water phase was 0.05–15.92 μg·g−1 and 2–211 ng·L−1, respectively. These PAHs mostly came from the combustion of biomass. The risk assessment showed that PAHs in dust had no obvious health risk (less than the magnitude of 10−6). Additionally, the high molecular weight (HMW) PAHs and the low molecular weight (LMW) PAHs were preferentially adsorbed by dust and the dissolved portion, respectively. It was confirmed by the relatively high logKd values of 4.23 for the HMW-PAHs. Pearson correlation analysis suggested that the higher concentration of dissolved organic carbon and humic-like substance were in favor of PAHs in dust released into waters. This study can provide information on pollution control when considering the impact of fluorescent organic matter on the fate and transport of PAHs.

Atmospheric settled dust study was conducted with the purpose of to determine the source of heavy metal elements (As, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in airborne dust from Ulaanbaatar using the multivariate analysis and spatial distribution mapping by geographic information system (GIS) with the systematic grid. A total of 57 dust samples were collected from the impervious surfaces at 2–4 m above the ground in January of 2020. The mean concentrations of heavy metals were increasing order of Co—10.4 ± 1.3 mg/kg > As—16.5 ± 5.9 mg/kg > Ni—21.3 ± 3.3 mg/kg > Pb—51.7 ± 26.4 mg/kg > Cu—65.5 ± 23.6 mg/kg > Cr—70.2 ± 18.7 mg/kg > Zn—571.3 ± 422.8 mg/kg. In terms of multivariate analysis, we used Pearson's correlation, principal component analysis (PCA), and hierarchical cluster analysis (CA). Three principal components, which are eigenvalues higher than 1, were determined accounting for 70.5% of the total variance by PCA. As a result, PC1 38.5% (As, Cr, Cu, and Ni), PC2 17.3% (Pb and Zn), and PC3 14.7% (Co and Pb) are attributable to coal combustion, vehicle exhaust emission, and resuspension of soil particles, respectively. The results of correlation analysis and CA were fairly in agreement with PCA. The spatial distribution maps of heavy metals were revealed in the downtown in which 40 covered sampling sites with about 700m intervals. In the spatial distribution mappings, generally, the southern part of the mapping area was higher concentrations of heavy metals. An increment of heavy metals concentration was presented for As, Cr, Co, and Ni with their similar trend in the southwestern part of the mapping. Besides, another trend for the distribution of the high concentrations of Cu and Zn was observed in the south and southeast parts. Young children spend a substantial part of their waking time in preschools. It is therefore important to reduce the load of hazardous semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) in the preschools' indoor environment. The presence and levels of five SVOC groups were evaluated (1) in a newly built preschool, (2) before and after renovation of a preschool, and (3) in a preschool where SVOC‐containing articles were removed. The new building and the renovation were performed using construction materials that were approved with respect to content of restricted chemicals. SVOC substance groups were measured in indoor air and settled dust and included phthalates and alternative plasticizers, organophosphate esters (OPEs), brominated flame retardants, and bisphenols. The most abundant substance groups in both indoor air and dust were phthalates and alternative plasticizers and OPEs. SVOC concentrations were lower or of the same order of magnitude as those reported in comparable studies. The relative Cumulative Hazard Quotient (HQcum) was used to assess the effects of the different reduction measures on children's SVOC exposure from indoor air and dust in the preschools. HQcum values were low (1.0–6.1%) in all three preschools and decreased further after renovation and article substitution. The SVOCs concentrations decreased significantly more in the preschool renovated with the approved building materials than in the preschool where the SVOC‐containing articles were removed. Background and purpose: Lead (Pb) is used as a flux in the glazing process of pottery utensils in several regions of the world. It can affect the nervous and hematopoietic systems; in addition, it is classified as a probable human carcinogen. This work aims to evaluate Pb exposure of potters and describe the main determinants of elevated blood Pb (PbB) levels in this group of workers. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study with potters of Maragogipinho Village, Bahia, Brazil, of both sexes, aged 16–72 years (n = 85). Non-exposed workers of the same age range residing in the urban area of Aratuípe town were also recruited (n = 50). We evaluated Pb dust deposition rates (PbDrt) in pottery workshops and PbB levels. All Pb measurements were performed by Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrometry. Results: The median of PbB (min–max) and geometric mean (SD) PbDrt for the exposed group were 7.9 (0.9–49.8) µg/dL and 1463 (± 290,000) μg/m2/30 days, respectively. For the control group, levels were 1.5 (0.1–19.8) μg/dL and 82 (46) μg/m2 30 days, respectively. Conclusion: The data found showed an excessive exposure among artisans, exceeding occupationally safe levels and those reported in the literature. It is important to implement occupational hygiene measures and improvements of the working conditions of these labors, especially the replacement of lead oxide in the pottery-glazing process. Résumé: Dans le cadre de la campagne nationale « Écoles » de l'Observatoire de la qualité de l'air intérieur (OQAI) menée en France entre 2013 et 2017, une analyse exploratoire et multidimensionnelle des données a été menée pour mieux comprendre la réalité complexe de la multipollution dans les salles de classe. Cinq profils de pollution ont été identifiés : les salles de classe multipolluées dans l'air et les poussières déposées au sol (21 %), multipolluées dans l'air (19 %) ou multipolluées dans les poussières déposées (24 %), les salles de classe peu polluées dans l'air et les poussières déposées (19 %) et les salles de classe polluées uniquement par des phtalates (17 %). Les profils de pollution ont été caractérisés à l'aide des données descriptives des bâtiments, de l'environnement extérieur, et des usages. Les profils multipollués correspondent généralement à des bâtiments anciens sans système mécanique de ventilation. Les salles de classe avec les plus fortes concentrations en composés organiques volatils (COV) sont souvent situées en zones périurbaines et urbaines, où les concentrations extérieures en COV sont également plus élevées. As part of a nationwide indoor air quality survey performed in schools in France between 2013 and 2017, an exploratory and multidimensional analysis of the data was conducted to understand the complexity of pollutant mixtures in classrooms. Five pollution profiles were identified: classrooms with multiple chemicals in air and settled floor dust (21%), classrooms with multiple chemicals either in air (19%) or in settled dust (24%), classrooms with low air and settled dust pollution (19%) and classrooms only polluted by phthalates (17%). The pollution profiles were characterized by using the descriptive data of the buildings, the outdoor environment, and the activities. The classrooms with multiple chemicals were found mostly in old buildings without mechanical ventilation systems. The present study involved monitoring the distribution of two widely consumed parabens (methyl paraben (MeP) and butyl paraben (BuP)) and their transformation products in indoor dust from different categories of settlement (urban, semi-urban, rural, and tribal homes). The results revealed a prevalent occurrence of parabens in all the settlement categories. A non-normal distribution pattern for MeP and BuP levels across the sampling sites was noted. While comparing the residence time of parabens in dust samples, it was found that the half-lives of the analytes were greater in the dust from urban (MeP t1/2 : 47.510 h; BuP t1/2 : 22.354 h) and rural (MeP t1/2 : 27.725 h and BuP t1/2 : 31.500 h) areas. The presence of paraben metabolites, such as hydroxy methylparaben (OH–MeP), para hydroxy benzoic acid (p-HBA), and benzoic acid (BA) in dust samples supports their transformation within indoor spaces. The average daily intake of parabens through dust ingestion and dermal absorption by children was higher than adults. The collection and analysis of settled dust samples from indoor environments has become one of several environmental sampling methods used to assess bioburden indoors. The aim of the study was to characterize the bioburden in vacuumed settled dust from 10 Primary Health Care Centers by culture based and molecular methods. Results for bacterial load ranged from 1 to 12 CFU.g−1 of dust and Gram-negative bacteria ranged between 1 to 344 CFU.g−1 of dust. Fungal load ranged from 0 CFU.g−1 of dust to uncountable. Aspergillus section Fumigati was detected in 4 sampling sites where culture base-methods could not identify this section. Mucorales (Rhizopus sp.) was observed on 1 mg/L voriconazole. Three out of 10 settled dust samples were contaminated by mycotoxins. Settled dust sampling coupled with air sampling in a routine way might provide useful information about bioburden exposure. This study aimed to identify possible sources of settled dust events that occurred in an urban area nearby an industrial park, which alarmed the local population. Settled dust was collected in January 2019 and its chemical characterization was assessed by micro-PIXE, focusing on a total of 29 elements. Comparison with chemical profiles of particulate matter from different types of environment was conducted, along with the assessment of crustal enrichment factors and Spearman correlations, allowing to understand which sources were contributing to this settled dust event. Quality of the urban environment where children play is of great concern for protecting their health. Thus, fast and economically feasible proxy methods for assessment of urban environment are increasingly applied. In this study, settled dust from 13 playgrounds from Sofia city (Bulgaria), was investigated by mineral magnetism, portable X-ray fluorescence measurements, and scanning electron microscopy. The aim of the study was to evaluate the degree of anthropogenic pollution of playgrounds during winter and summer seasons and to identify pollution sources. Magnetic susceptibility (χ) was measured for two dust fractions - very coarse (grain sizes between 1 and 2 mm) and size fraction of d < 1 mm. In spite of this rough separation, systematic seasonal difference in χ of the two fractions is observed. Winter dust, containing larger amount of finer fraction shows lower χ. Regardless of lower relative content of d < 1 mm fraction, summer playground dusts are more strongly magnetic. Complex Pollution Load Index (PLI), calculated using contents of Cu, Zn, S, Pb (Potentially Toxic Elements (PTE)), shows higher contamination in summer dust, compared to winter. Anhysteretic and isothermal remanences of dust d < 1 mm demonstrate prevailing magnetically stable grains at playgrounds located at greater distance from major boulevards. Thermomagnetic analyses of magnetic susceptibility identified magnetite as the main magnetic mineral, although metallic iron was also evident in summer dust. Based on the meteorological models of atmospheric circulation over Sofia, the pollution sources suggested in a previous research, on one hand, and the carried out Factor Analysis, on the other hand, the results point out that in spite of higher PM10 dust load in winter, summer dust pollution causes stronger PTEs contamination. Factor analysis revealed four factors, explaining most of variability in the data. These factors were identified as: 1) re-suspension of soil and road dust; 2) fine particles magnetite of stable single domain grain size, originating probably from traffic exhaust and non-exhaust emissions; 3) emissions from installations burning waste materials; 4) coal burning. • Magnetic properties of settled dust at children playground differ between summer and winter. • Dust collected in summer is more strongly magnetic due to bigger amount of coarsest particles. • Dust collected in winter contains more fine particles emitted from heating installations. • Magnetite and metallic iron are the main magnetic minerals identified in settled dust. • Analyses of contents of Potentially Toxic Elements reveal stronger complex pollution of summer dust. Settled dust can function as a pollutant sink for compounds, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and metal(loid)s (MMs), which may lead to health issues. Thus, dust represents a hazard specifically for young children, because of their vulnerability and hand-to-mouth behavior favoring dust ingestion. The aim of the present study was to explore the influence of the season and the microenvironment on the concentrations of 15 PAHs and 17 MMs in indoor and outdoor settled dust in three preschools (suburban, urban, and industrial). Second, the potential sources and health risks among children associated with dust PAHs and MMs were assessed. Third, domestic factors (risk perception, knowledge and parental style) were described to explore protective parental behaviors toward dust hazards. The suburban preschool had the lowest concentrations of dust PAHs and MMs, while the industrial and urban preschools had higher but similar concentrations. Seasonal tendencies were not clearly observed. Indoor dusts reflected the outdoor environment, even if specific indoor sources were noted. Source analysis indicated mainly vehicular emissions, material release, and pyrogenic or industrial sources. The non-cancer health risks were non-existent, but potential cancer health risks (between 1.10−6 and 1.10−4) occurred at all sampling locations. Notably, the highest cancer risk was observed in a playground area (>1.10−4) and material release should be further addressed. Whereas we assessed higher risk indoors, parents perceived a higher risk in the open-air environment and at the preschool than at home. They also perceived a lower risk for their own children, revealing an optimism bias, which reduces parental anxiety. The occurrence and profiles of 19 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and 15 methylated derivatives (Me-PAHs) were examined in settled dust samples collected from workplaces and living areas of an informal end-of-life vehicle (ELV) processing village, and house dusts from urban and rural areas in northern Vietnam. Concentrations of total PAHs and Me-PAHs decreased in the order: ELV workplace (median 5700, range 900–18,000 ng g−1) > rural house (3700, 1800–6200 ng g−1) > urban house (1800, 620–3100 ng g−1) ≈ ELV living dusts (1000, 600–3900 ng g−1). PAHs with 4 rings or more dominated in almost all the samples, indicating the abundance of pyrogenic sources (e.g., vehicular emissions and domestic thermal processes). Levels of Me-PAHs were exceeded those of PAHs in several ELV samples, revealing specific petrogenic sources derived from vehicle processing activities. Results from source apportionment analysis have partially identified traffic emission, biomass and coal combustion, and mixed petrogenic-pyrogenic sources related to ELV waste as the major sources of PAHs and Me-PAHs in the urban, rural, and ELV areas, respectively. Daily intake doses and health risk related to PAHs and Me-PAHs in settled dusts were estimated for ELV workers and residents living in the study areas. The worst exposure scenario of dust-bound PAHs showed a potential cancer risk for the ELV workers, meanwhile, no significant non-cancer and cancer risk was expected for other exposed groups. A more comprehensive and accurate risk assessment of PAHs and related compounds should be conducted in Vietnam. Exposure to moisture‐damaged indoor environments is associated with adverse respiratory health effects, but responsible factors remain unidentified. In order to explore possible mechanisms behind these effects, the oxidative capacity and hemolytic activity of settled dust samples (n = 25) collected from moisture‐damaged and non‐damaged schools in Spain, the Netherlands, and Finland were evaluated and matched against the microbial content of the sample. Oxidative capacity was determined with plasmid scission assay and hemolytic activity by assessing the damage to isolated human red blood cells. The microbial content of the samples was measured with quantitative PCR assays for selected microbial groups and by analyzing the cell wall markers ergosterol, muramic acid, endotoxins, and glucans. The moisture observations in the schools were associated with some of the microbial components in the dust, and microbial determinants grouped together increased the oxidative capacity. Oxidative capacity was also affected by particle concentration and country of origin. Two out of 14 studied dust samples from moisture‐damaged schools demonstrated some hemolytic activity. The results indicate that the microbial component connected with moisture damage is associated with increased oxidative stress and that hemolysis should be studied further as one possible mechanism contributing to the adverse health effects of moisture‐damaged buildings. Abstract Semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) are present in the gas phase, particulate phase and settled dust in the indoor environment, resulting in human exposure through different pathways. Sometimes, SVOCs are only measured in a single phase because of practical and/or financial constraints. A probabilistic method proposed by Wei et al. for the prediction of the SVOC concentration in the gas phase from the SVOC concentration in the particulate phase was extended to model the equilibrium SVOC concentrations in both the gas and particulate phases from the SVOC concentration measured in settled dust. This approach, based on the theory of SVOC partitioning among the gas phase, particulate phase, and settled dust incorporating Monte Carlo simulation, was validated using measured data from the literature and applied to the prediction of the concentrations of 48 SVOCs in both the gas and particulate phases in 3.6 million French dwellings where at least one child aged 6 months to 6 years lived. The median gas-phase concentration of 15 SVOCs, i.e., 5 phthalates, 2 organochlorine pesticides, 4 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), 2 synthetic musks, dichlorvos, and tributyl phosphate, was found to be higher than 1 ng/m3. The median concentration of 5 phthalates in the particulate phase was higher than 1 ng/m3. The impacts of some physical parameters, such as the molar mass and boiling point, on the SVOC partitioning among the different phases were quantified. The partitioning depends on the activity coefficient, vapor pressure at the boiling point, entropy of evaporation of the SVOCs, and the fraction of organic matter in particles. Thus, the partitioning may differ from one chemical family to another. The empirical equations based on regressions allow quick estimation of SVOC partitioning among the gas phase, particulate phase, and settled dust from the molar mass and boiling point. Aims: We constantly interact with our surrounding microbiome, including the micro‐organisms present in highly populated public places. However, data on everyday exposure to background levels of micro‐organisms are limited. To address this, bacteria and fungi were collected and enumerated in settled dust from railway stations. Methods and Results: Samples were collected weekly for 52 weeks, from up to three pre‐determined surfaces in each of 17 railway stations in England and Scotland. Trained staff at each station took surface wipes, sending them to the laboratory for culture‐based analysis for total bacteria and fungi. Maximum yields of bacteria at the stations were 107–108 colony forming units (CFU) per cm2, and 104–105CFU per cm2 for fungi. Conclusions: There was evidence of seasonal trends, with bacterial numbers rising from spring through to winter, while fungal numbers peaked in autumn. Microbial numbers were similar in samples taken at the same time at a given station. Influences on contamination levels were likely to be a combination of passenger numbers and station layout, with dust generated from construction work also contributing. Significance and Impact of the Study: A baseline of typical human exposure to micro‐organisms in public transport hubs was established through the generation of a comprehensive database. Objectives: To date, the scientific source materials usually focus on microbial contamination of the museum or library collections themselves, while the exposure of persons who professionally deal with this type of objects in cultural heritage conservation laboratories is ignored. Material and Methods: The study was carried out in 9 naturally ventilated conservation laboratories with no history of water damage. Viable (understood as culturable) bioaerosol stationary samples were collected in both outdoor and indoor environments using 6-stage Andersen impactor. Simultaneously, stationary and personal indoor bioaerosol measurements were carried out using both Gesamtstaubprobenahme an der Person (GSP) and Button filter samplers. These measurements were complemented by evaluation of microbial content in the dust settled on conserved works of art. All impactor, filter, and settled dust samples were quantitatively examined to obtain viable and total concentrations of bacteria and fungi. All isolated microbial strains were taxonomically identified. Results: At workplaces, the concentrations of viable microorganisms in air were below 2000 cfu/m3 and accounted for not more than 5.5% of total microbiota. The study showed that quantitative assessment of viable bioaerosol can be made with an Andersen impactor as well as by using Button and GSP filter samplers, irrespective of whether they are applied for personal or stationary measurements. Compared to the impactor, however, the use of filter samplers for microbial contamination monitoring substantially limits the scope of qualitative information which can be obtained. Size distribution analysis revealed that the largest “load” of microorganisms can penetrate into the respiratory tract between the trachea and terminal bronchi, and thereby may be responsible for allergic inflammations in exposed workers. Conclusions: The precise assessment of microbial hazards in conservation laboratories should comprise control of both viable and total particle counts. The hermetization of such workplaces and control of relative humidity should be implemented and maintained to assure proper hygienic conditions.

The aim of this study was to characterise the contamination in settled dust in French classrooms and to provide an overview of the influencing factors of dust contamination. Cat, dog and dust mite allergens and metals were measured in 51 classrooms at 17 schools. The concentrations of pet allergens in settled dust were generally low (mean value of 0.1 µg·g−1), with carpeted and rug-covered floors presenting higher dust and cat allergen concentrations. The highest metal loadings in dust were observed for manganese (Mn) and copper (Cu), while the lead (Pb) loadings were lower (16 ± 19 µg·m−2) and fell below the French guideline. Higher metal leachability was found for cadmium (Cd), Cu, Pb and strontium (Sr) at values of approximately 80%, which suggest that, in cases of dust ingestion by children, a large proportion should be assimilated through the gastro-intestinal tract. The intra-classroom and intra-school variabilities of the metal concentrations in settled dust were lower than the variability between schools. Classrooms with tiled floors had higher Pb loadings than classrooms with wood or vinyl floors. In addition, wet cleaning less than once a week resulted in greater loadings of Cu and Pb in the settled dust. Lastly, enrichment factors showed that metals in settled dust of classrooms were not only from the contribution of the natural background concentrations in soils.

Chemicals such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), phthalateesters, parabens, siloxanes and squalene, all of them classified as endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), have been reported to occur in all environmental compartments. The effects of EDCs on development, reproduction, growth, metabolism and obesity constitute a real public health issue. A list of EDCs (> 40 compounds) were characterised in total suspended particulates (outdoor soot: 92 samples) collected in July-September 2016 in an Algiers urban area; besides, settled indoor dusts (36 samples) were collected between November and December 2016 in schools, homes, manufacture and hospital of the same province. The analytical procedure consisted of ultrasonic bath extraction, column chromatography separation into fractions of different polarity and gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric processing. The total loads of phthalates ranging from 6.0 to 347 ng/m2 (median, 26 ng/m2) were determined in indoor dust and 4.6 to 11.6 ng/m3 (median, 7.9 ng/m3) in outdoor soot; meanwhile, PAHs ranged from 12.1 to 108 ng/m2 (median, 36 ng/m2) in indoor dust and ranged from 5.6 to 7.7 ng/m3 (median 5.7 ng/m3) in outdoor soot. Finally, illicit substances such as cocaine, cannabinol and Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol were found to range from 0.5 to 11 pg/m3, 4.6 to 9.2 pg/m3 and 11 to 81 pg/m3, respectively, in outdoor soot. A number of studies have reported the occurrence of phthalates and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in indoor settled dust from different occupational and residential settings around the world but limited studies are available from public and religious places. In recent decades Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has experienced tremendous industrial growth especially in the petroleum industries, and as result environmental issues related with such industries have also increased but scientific data is still scarce to understand the impact on public health. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to report the phthalates and PAHs profile in the settled dust collected from various mosques of Jeddah, an important part of people living in the region, and to evaluate the health risk associated with these chemicals via dust ingestion, inhalation and dermal contact for the general public who attend mosques for prayers. There are studies available on the occurrence of PAHs in indoor settled dust from residential and different occupational settings in literature but limited data is available on their occurrence and potential health risk assessment in automobile workshops. In recent decades Saudi Arabia has experienced tremendous growth in the petroleum industry and as a result, the automobile industry is booming. People working in automobile workshops are at a greater risk of exposure to chemicals releasing from the petroleum products. The main objective of this study was to report PAHs in settled dust from different automobile workshops of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and evaluate health risk for workers through dust exposure. Pyrene (1585–13500 ng/g), Benz[ a ]anthracene (< LOQ–5065 ng/g), and Phenanthrene (280–4860 ng/g) were the major PAHs and ∑ 12 PAHs concentrations ranged between 7620 and 30800 ng/g. Profile of PAHs was different in dust from small and heavy vehicle workshops. For workers, health risk assessment was calculated based on benzo[ a ]pyrene equivalent carcinogenic power (BaPE), incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR), and daily exposure to PAHs via dust ingestion. The median concentration of BaPE was 285 ng/g, ILCR was up to 6.78 × 10 − 3 (exceeded reference values of USEPA (range between 1 × 10 − 6 and 1 × 10 − 4 )), and worker's exposure via dust ingestion on daily bases reached up to 33 ng/kg bw/day for ∑ 12 PAHs. This study measured concentrations of fifteen phthalates in dust from homes (n = 19), offices (n = 10), kindergartens (n = 5) and public places (n = 7) in Beijing, China, during April 2010 and May 2011. We examined phthalate co-occurrence in dust collected from different indoor surfaces and estimated daily exposure to phthalates via dust ingestion, inhalation, and dermal absorption. Diisobutyl phthalate (DiBP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP) and di (2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) were the most abundant phthalates in each of the investigated environments (medians: 58.1–272 μg/g, 31.2–145 μg/g, and 202–1310 μg/g, respectively), with detection frequencies greater than 90% except for DiBP in dust from homes. Diethyl phthalate (DEP) was detected only in homes, with a detection frequency of 42%. The detection frequency of dinonyl phthalate (DNP) was 80% in public places (median: 78.8 μg/g). DnBP, DiBP and DEHP concentrations in different indoor environments differed significantly ( p < 0.05). Our findings suggest that DnBP, DiBP and DEHP originate from the same sources, while DNP has several sources. DEHP exposure is the highest for infants, children and adults. The exposure doses of DnBP and DEHP decrease as age increases. Dermal absorption from air is the main pathway for DiBP and DnBP, contributing from 56.4% to 84.7% of the total exposure. Settled dust samples were collected from Qingdao urban area to analyze the spatial distribution, chemical speciation and sources of metals, and to evaluate the health risk of metals from atmospheric dust. The average contents of Hg, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in the atmospheric settled dust of Qingdao were 0.17, 0.75, 153.1, 456.7, 60.9, 176.0 and 708.3 mg/kg, respectively, which were higher than soil background values. The mean exchangeable metal and carbonated-associated fraction proportions of Cd, Zn and Pb were 43.6%, 26.1% and 15%, which implies that they have high mobility and bioavailability. Higher contents of heavy metals appeared in old city areas because of the historical accumulation of metals. Principal component analysis showed that combustion sources partially contributed to Pb, Zn and other trace metals. Hg, Pb and Zn mainly originated from business, human activities and municipal construction. Cd and Cu from settled dust of the old city originated from the erosion and ageing of construction materials. The non-carcinogenic risk rankings for the seven determined heavy metals were ingestion > dermal > inhalation. Cd, Cr and Ni from settled dust showed a low carcinogenic risk. The health risks of Cr, Cu and Pb were higher in old city areas and, therefore, need special attention.

Objectives: The study was aimed at assessment of exposure to endotoxins, (1→3)-β-D-glucans and mite, cockroach, cat, dog allergens present in settled dust in premises of children as agents which may be significantly correlated with the occurrence of allergic symptoms and diseases in children. Materials and Methods: The study covered 50 homes of one- or two-year-old children in Poland. Samples of settled dust were taken from the floor and the child's bed. The levels of (1→3)-β-D-glucans (floor), endotoxins (floor) and allergens of mite, cat, dog and cockroach (floor and bed) were analyzed. Results: Average geometric concentrations (geometric standard deviation) of endotoxins, (1→3)-β-D-glucans, Der p1, Fel d1, Can f1 and Bla g1 in children homes were on the floor 42 166.0 EU/g (3.2), 20 478.4 ng/g (2.38), 93.9 ng/g (6.58), 119.8 ng/g (13.0), 288.9 ng/g (3.4), 0.72 U/g (4.4) and in their beds (only allergens) 597.8 ng/g (14.2), 54.1 ng/g (4.4), 158.6 ng/g (3.1) 0.6 U/g (2.9), respectively. When the floor was covered with the carpet, higher concentrations of endotoxins, (1→3)-β-D-glucans and allergens (each type) were found in the settled dust (p < 0.05). The trend was opposite in case of allergens (except dog) analyzed from bed dust and significantly higher concentrations were found in the rooms with smooth floor (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Among the analyzed factors only the type of floor significantly modified both the level of biological indicators and allergens. The results of this study could be the base for verifying a hypothesis that carpeting may have a protective role against high levels of cockroach, dog and cat allergens.

Objectives: The main objective of the study was to determine the levels of house dust mite (Der p1), dog (Can f1), cat (Fel d1) and cockroach (Bla g2) allergens in kindergartens localized in an urban agglomeration. Material and Methods: A quantitative analysis of allergens was carried out in settled dust samples collected by vacuuming the floor surface in three kindergartens (N = 84) and children's clothing (N = 36). The samples were collected in springsummer and autumn-winter periods as well as at the beginning and end of the week. The allergen dust concentration was determined by enzyme-linked immunoenzymatic assay (ELISA). Results: The mean geometric concentrations (±geometric standard deviations) of allergens Der p1, Can f1, Fel d1 and Bla g2 determined in kindergartens were: 0.02±3.21 μg/g of dust; 0.97±4.49 μg/g of dust; 0.30±4.43 μg/g of dust and 0.01±3.08 μg/g of dust, respectively. Younger classrooms (children aged from 3 to 4 years) were characterized by almost twice higher mean concentration of allergen Fel d1, as compared to older classrooms (children aged from 5 to 6 years) (p < 0.05). A significant impact of seasonality on the level of dog allergen Can f1 was found (p < 0.05). No significant weekly variation was found in average concentrations of the allergens. Children who had a dog and/or cat at home were characterized by high concentrations of allergens Can f1 and Fel d1 on their clothes (59.2±5.39 μg Can f1/g of dust; 3.63±1.47 μg Fel d1/g of dust), significantly higher than concentrations of allergens in children who did not have any pets (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Special attention should be paid to keeping the kindergarten rooms tidy and clean and to an appropriate choice of furnishings and fittings which would prevent the proliferation of the house dust mite and accumulation of allergens.

Although cleaning tasks are frequently performed in daycare, no study has focused on exposures in daycares in relation to respiratory health. The CRESPI cohort is an epidemiological study among workers (n~320) and children (n~540) attending daycares. The purpose is to examine the impact of daycare exposures to disinfectants and cleaning products (DCP) on the respiratory health of workers and children. A sample of 108 randomly selected daycares in the region of Paris has been visited to collect settled dust to analyze semi-volatile organic compounds and microbiota, as well as sample indoor air to analyze aldehydes and volatile organic compounds. Innovative tools (smartphone applications) are used to scan DCP barcodes in daycare and inform their use; a database then matches the barcodes with the products' compositions. At baseline, workers/parents completed a standardized questionnaire, collecting information on DCP used at home, respiratory health, and potential confounders. Follow-up regarding children's respiratory health (monthly report through a smartphone application and biannual questionnaires) is ongoing until the end of 2023. Associations between DCP exposures and the respiratory health of workers/children will be evaluated. By identifying specific environments or DCP substances associated with the adverse respiratory health of workers and children, this longitudinal study will contribute to the improvement of preventive measures.

As endotoxin exposure has known effects on human health, it is important to know the generally existing levels of endotoxins as well as their contributing factors. This work reviews current knowledge on the endotoxin loads in settled floor dust, concentrations of endotoxins in indoor air, and different environmental factors potentially affecting endotoxin levels. The literature review consists of peer-reviewed manuscripts located using Google and PubMed, with search terms based on individual words and combinations. References from relevant articles have also been searched. Analysis of the data showed that in residential, school, and office environments, the mean endotoxin loads in settled floor dust varied between 660 and 107,000 EU/m 2 , 2180 and 48,000 EU/m 2 , and 2700 and 12,890 EU/m 2 , respectively. Correspondingly, the mean endotoxin concentrations in indoor air varied between 0.04 and 1610 EU/m 3 in residences, and 0.07 and 9.30 EU/m 3 in schools and offices. There is strong scientific evidence indicating that age of houses (or housing unit year category), cleaning, farm or rural living, flooring materials (the presence of carpets), number of occupants, the presence of dogs or cats indoors, and relative humidity affect endotoxin loads in settled floor dust. The presence of pets (especially dogs) was extremely strongly associated with endotoxin concentrations in indoor air.
