Search

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are energetic, millisecond-duration radio pulses observed at extragalactic distances and whose origins are still a subject of heated debate. A fraction of the FRB population have shown repeating bursts, however it's still unclear whether these represent a distinct class of sources. We investigated the bursting behaviour of FRB 20220912A, one of the most active repeating FRBs known thus far. In particular, we focused on its burst energy distribution, linked to the source energetics, and its emission spectrum, with the latter directly related to the underlying emission mechanism. We monitored FRB 20220912A at $408$ MHz with the Northern Cross radio telescope and at $1.4$ GHz using the $32$-m Medicina Grueff radio telescope. Additionally, we conducted $1.2$ GHz observations taken with the upgraded Giant Meter Wave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) searching for a persistent radio source coincident with FRB 20220912A, which included high energy observations in the $0.3-10$ keV, $0.4-100$ MeV and $0.03-30$ GeV energy range. We report $16$ new bursts from FRB 20220912A at $408$ MHz during the period between October 16$^{\rm th}$ 2022 and December 31$^{\rm st}$ 2023. Their cumulative spectral energy distribution follows a power law with slope $\alpha_E = -1.3 \pm 0.2$ and we measured a repetition rate of $0.19 \pm 0.03$ hr$^{-1}$ for bursts having a fluence of $\mathcal{F} \geq 17$ Jy ms. Furthermore, we report no detections at 1.4 GHz for $\mathcal{F} \geq 20$ Jy ms. These non-detections imply an upper limit of $\beta < -2.3$, with $\beta$ being the $408$ MHz $-$ $1.4$ GHz spectral index of FRB 20220912A. This is inconsistent with positive $\beta$ values found for the only two known cases in which an FRB has been detected in separate spectral bands. In this work we report the results of a nineteen-month Fast Radio Burst observational campaign carried out with the North-South arm of the Medicina Northern Cross radio telescope at 408~MHz in which we monitored four repeating sources: FRB20180916B, FRB20181030A, FRB20200120E and FRB20201124A. We present the current state of the instrument and the detection and characterisation of three bursts from FRB20180916B. Given our observing time, our detections are consistent with the event number we expect from the known burst rate ($2.7 \pm 1.9$ above our 10$\sigma$, 38~Jy~ms detection threshold) in the 5.2 day active window of the source, further confirming the source periodicity. We detect no bursts from the other sources. We turn this result into a 95\% confidence level lower limit on the slope of the differential fluence distribution $\alpha$ to be $\alpha > 2.1$ and $\alpha > 2.2$ for FRB20181030A and FRB20200120E respectively. Given the known rate for FRB20201124A, we expect $1.0 \pm 1.1$ bursts from our campaign, consistent with our non-detection., Comment: MNRAS Accepted, 10 pages, 6 figures

Magnetars are a promising candidate for the origin of Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs). The detection of an extremely luminous radio burst from the Galactic magnetar SGR J1935+2154 on 2020 April 28 added credence to this hypothesis. We report on simultaneous and non-simultaneous observing campaigns using the Arecibo, Effelsberg, LOFAR, MeerKAT, MK2 and Northern Cross radio telescopes and the MeerLICHT optical telescope in the days and months after the April 28 event. We did not detect any significant single radio pulses down to fluence limits between 25 mJy ms and 18 Jy ms. Some observing epochs overlapped with times when X-ray bursts were detected. Radio images made on four days using the MeerKAT telescope revealed no point-like persistent or transient emission at the location of the magnetar. No transient or persistent optical emission was detected over seven days. Using the multi-colour MeerLICHT images combined with relations between DM, NH and reddening we constrain the distance to SGR J1935+2154, to be between 1.5 and 6.5 kpc. The upper limit is consistent with some other distance indicators and suggests that the April 28 burst is closer to two orders of magnitude less energetic than the least energetic FRBs. The lack of single-pulse radio detections shows that the single pulses detected over a range of fluences are either rare, or highly clustered, or both. It may also indicate that the magnetar lies somewhere between being radio-quiet and radio-loud in terms of its ability to produce radio emission efficiently., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are short (millisecond) radio pulses originating from enigmatic sources at extragalactic distances so far lacking a detection in other energy bands. Magnetized neutron stars (magnetars) have been considered as the sources powering the FRBs, but the connection is controversial because of differing energetics and the lack of radio and X-ray detections with similar characteristics in the two classes. We report here the detection by the AGILE satellite on April 28, 2020 of an X-ray burst in coincidence with the very bright radio burst from the Galactic magnetar SGR 1935+2154. The burst detected by AGILE in the hard X-ray band (18-60 keV) lasts about 0.5 seconds, it is spectrally cutoff above 80 keV, and implies an isotropically emitted energy ~ $10^{40}$ erg. This event is remarkable in many ways: it shows for the first time that a magnetar can produce X-ray bursts in coincidence with FRB-like radio bursts; it also suggests that FRBs associated with magnetars may emit X-ray bursts of both magnetospheric and radio-pulse types that may be discovered in nearby sources. Guided by this detection, we discuss SGR 1935+2154 in the context of FRBs, and especially focus on the class of repeating-FRBs. Based on energetics, magnetars with fields B ~ $10^{15}$ G may power the majority of repeating-FRBs. Nearby repeating-FRBs offer a unique occasion to consolidate the FRB-magnetar connection, and we present new data on the X-ray monitoring of nearby FRBs. We report on the lowest-frequency detection to date of three bursts from the fast radio burst FRB 180916, observed at 328 MHz with the Sardinia Radio Telescope (SRT). The SRT observed the periodic repeater FRB 180916 for five days from 2020 February 20 to 24 during a time interval of active radio bursting, and detected the three bursts during the first hour of observations; no more bursts were detected during the remaining ~ 30 hours. Simultaneous SRT observations at 1548 MHz did not detect any bursts. Burst fluences are in the range 37 to 13 Jy ms. No relevant scattering is observed for these bursts. We also present the results of the multi-wavelength campaign we performed on FRB 180916, during the five days of the active window. Simultaneously with the SRT observations, others with different time spans were performed with the Northern Cross at 408 MHz, with XMM-Newton, NICER, INTEGRAL, AGILE, and with the TNG and two optical telescopes in Asiago, which are equipped with fast photometers. XMM-Newton obtained data simultaneously with the three bursts detected by the SRT, and determined a luminosity upper limit in the 0.3-10 keV energy range of ~$10^{45}$ erg/s for the burst emission. AGILE obtained data simultaneously with the first burst and determined a fluence upper limit in the MeV range for millisecond timescales of $ 10^{-8}$ erg cm$^{-2}$.Our results show that absorption from the circumburst medium does not significantly affect the emission from FRB 180916, thus limiting the possible presence of a superluminous supernova around the source, and indicate that a cutoff for the bursting mechanism, if present, must be at lower frequencies. Our multi-wavelength campaign sensitively constrains the broadband emission from FRB 180916, and provides the best limits so far for the electromagnetic response to the radio bursting of this remarkable source of fast radio bursts., Comment: ApJL, 896 L40

The implicit objective of the biennial "international - Traveling Workshop on Interactions between Sparse models and Technology" (iTWIST) is to foster collaboration between international scientific teams by disseminating ideas through both specific oral/poster presentations and free discussions. For its second edition, the iTWIST workshop took place in the medieval and picturesque town of Namur in Belgium, from Wednesday August 27th till Friday August 29th, 2014. Giant radio halos are diffuse, Mpc-scale, synchrotron sources located in the central regions of galaxy clusters and provide the most relevant example of cluster non-thermal activity. Radio and X-ray surveys allow to investigate the statistics of halos and may contribute to constrain their origin and evolution. We investigate the distribution of clusters in the plane X-ray (thermal, L_X) vs synchrotron (P_{1.4})luminosity, where clusters hosting giant radio halos trace the P_{1.4}--L_X correlation and clusters without radio halos populate a region that is well separated from that spanned by the above correlation. The connection between radio halos and cluster mergers suggests that the cluster Mpc-scale synchrotron emission is amplified during these mergers and then suppressed when clusters become more dynamically relaxed. In this context, by analysing the distribution in the P_{1.4}--L_X plane of clusters from X-ray selected samples with adequate radio follow up, we constrain the typical time-scale of evolution of diffuse radio emission in clusters and discuss the implications for the origin of radio halos. We conclude that cluster synchrotron emission is suppressed (and amplified) in a time-scale significantly smaller than 1 Gyr. We show that this constraint appears difficult to reconcile with the hypothesis that the halo's radio power is suppressed due to dissipation of magnetic field in galaxy clusters. On the other hand, in agreement with models where turbulent acceleration plays a role, present constraints suggest that relativistic electrons are accelerated in Mpc-scale regions, in connection with cluster mergers and for a time-interval of about 1 Gyr, and then they cool in a relatively small time-scale, when the hosting cluster becomes more dynamically relaxed., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure, to appear in Astronomy & Astrophysics, 2 typos in references corrected, last sentence at the end of Sect.2 modified

In a recent paper we reported on the discovery of a radio halo with very steep spectrum in the merging galaxy cluster Abell 521 through observations with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). We showed that the steep spectrum of the halo is inconsistent with a secondary origin of the relativistic electrons and supports a turbulent acceleration scenario. At that time, due to the steep spectrum, the available observations at 1.4 GHz (archival NRAO - Very Large Array - VLA CnB-configuration data) were not adequate to accurately determine the flux density associated with the radio halo. In this paper we report the detection at 1.4 GHz of the radio halo in Abell 521 using deep VLA observations in the D-configuration. We use these new data to confirm the steep-spectrum of the object. We consider Abell 521 the prototype of a population of very-steep spectrum halos. This population is predicted assuming that turbulence plays an important role in the acceleration of relativistic particles in galaxy clusters, and we expect it will be unveiled by future surveys at low frequencies with the LOFAR and LWA radio telescopes., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures (figure 1 available in gif format only). The GMRT Radio Halo Survey, carried out at 610 MHz to investigate the statistical properties of cluster radio halos in a complete cluster sample selected in the redshift interval z=0.2-0.4, has significantly improved our understanding of the origin of cluster radio halos and relics. Here we briefly summarize the most relevant results of our investigation. A low frequency follow-up is in progress with the GMRT at 325 MHz and 240 MHz on the diffuse sources and candidated found at 610 MHz. We briefly report some preliminary results on these low frequency observations. Clusters of galaxies are the largest gravitationally bound objects in the Universe, containing about 10^15 solar masses of hot (10^8 K) gas, galaxies and dark matter in a typical volume of about 10 Mpc^3. Magnetic fields and relativistic particles are mixed with the gas as revealed by giant radio haloes, which arise from diffuse, megaparsec-scale synchrotron radiation at cluster center. Radio haloes require that the emitting electrons are accelerated in situ (by turbulence), or are injected (as secondary particles) by proton collisions into the intergalactic medium. They are found only in a fraction of massive clusters that have complex dynamics, which suggests a connection between these mechanisms and cluster mergers. Here we report a radio halo at low frequencies associated with the merging cluster Abell 521. This halo has an extremely steep radio spectrum, which implies a high frequency cut-off; this makes the halo difficult to detect with observations at 1.4 GHz (the frequency at which all other known radio haloes have been best studied). The spectrum of the halo is inconsistent with a secondary origin of the relativistic electrons, but instead supports turbulent acceleration, which suggests that many radio haloes in the Universe should emit mainly at low frequencies., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures, Nature 455, 944

We present the results of the GMRT cluster radio halo survey. The main purposes of our observational project are to measure which fraction of massive galaxy clusters in the redshift range z=0.2--0.4 hosts a radio halo, and to constrain the expectations of the particle re--acceleration model for the origin of the non--thermal radio emission. We selected a complete sample of 50 clusters in the X-ray band from the REFLEX (27) and the eBCS (23) catalogues. In this paper we present Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) observations at 610 MHz for all clusters still lacking high sensitivity radio information, i.e. 16 eBCS and 7 REFLEX clusters, thus completing the radio information for the whole sample. The typical sensitivity in our images is in the range 1$\sigma \sim 35-100 \mu$Jy b$^{-1}$. We found a radio halo in A697, a diffuse peripheral source of unclear nature in A781, a core--halo source in Z7160, a candidate radio halo in A1682 and ``suspect'' central emission in Z2661. Including the literature information, a total of 10 clusters in the sample host a radio halo. A very important result of our work is that 25 out of the 34 clusters observed with the GMRT do not host extended central emission at the sensitivity level of our observations, and for 20 of them firm upper limits to the radio power of a giant radio halo were derived. The GMRT Radio Halo Survey shows that radio halos are not common, and our findings on the fraction of giant radio halos in massive clusters are consistent with the statistical expectations based on the re--acceleration model. Aims. The statistical properties of radio halos can be used to discriminate among the possible models for their origin. Therefore an unbiased and exhaustive investigation in this direction is crucial. Methods. With this goal in mind in this paper we revise the occurrence of radio halos in the redshift range 0-0.4, combining the low redshift (z<0.2) statistical study of XBACs clusters with the NVSS (by Giovannini et al. 1999) with our recent results from the radio follow up of REFLEX and eBCS clusters, the GMRT radio halo survey, at higher redshift (0.2

Clusters of galaxies are sites of acceleration of charged particles and sources of non-thermal radiation. We report on new constraints on the population of cosmic rays in the Intra Cluster Medium (ICM) obtained via radio observations of a fairly large sample of massive, X-ray luminous, galaxy clusters in the redshift interval 0.2--0.4. The bulk of the observed galaxy clusters does not show any hint of Mpc scale synchrotron radio emission at the cluster center (Radio Halo). We obtained solid upper limits to the diffuse radio emission and discuss their implications for the models for the origin of Radio Halos. Our measurements allow us to derive also a limit to the content of cosmic ray protons in the ICM. Assuming spectral indices of these protons delta =2.1-2.4 and microG level magnetic fields, as from Rotation Measures, these limits are one order of magnitude deeper than present EGRET upper limits, while they are less stringent for steeper spectra and lower magnetic fields., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, ApJ Letter, accepted

Non thermal emission from galaxy clusters demonstrates the existence of relativistic particles and magnetic fields in the Intra Cluster Medium (ICM). Present instruments do not allow to firmly establish the energy associated to these components. In a few years gamma ray observations will put important constraints on the energy content of non thermal hadrons in clusters, while the combination of radio and hard X-ray data will be crucial to measure the energy content in the form of relativistic electrons and magnetic field. SIMBOL-X is expected to drive an important breakthrough in the field also because it is expected to operate in combination with the forthcoming low frequency radio telescopes (LOFAR, LWA). In this contribution we report first estimates of statistical properties of the hard X-ray emission in the framework of the re-acceleration model. In this paper we derive new expected scaling relations for clusters with giant radio halos in the framework of the re-acceleration scenario in a simplified, but physically motivated, form, namely: radio power (P_R) vs size of the radio emitting region (R_H), and P_R vs total cluster mass (M_H) contained in the emitting region and cluster velocity dispersion (sigma_H) in this region. We search for these correlations by analyzing the most recent radio and X-ray data available in the literature for a well known sample of clusters with giant radio halos. In particular we find a good correlation between P_R and R_H and a very tight ``geometrical'' scaling between M_H and R_H. From these correlations P_R is also expected to scale with M_H and sigma_H and this is confirmed by our analysis. We show that all the observed trends can be well reconciled with expectations in the case of a slight variation of the mean magnetic field strength in the radio halo volume with M_H. A byproduct correlation between R_H and sigma_H is also found, and can be further tested by optical studies. In addition, we find that observationally R_H scales non-linearly with the virial radius of the host cluster, and this immediately means that the fraction of the cluster volume which is radio emitting increases with cluster mass and thus that the non-thermal component in clusters is not self-similar., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Spectral index images can be used to constraint the energy spectrum of relativistic electrons and magnetic field distribution in radio halos and relics, providing useful information to understand their formation, evolution and connection to cluster merger processes. We present low-frequency images of the two clusters of galaxies: A2744 and A2219, in which a wide diffuse emission is detected. Observations were made with the Very Large Array at the frequency of 325 MHz. For both clusters deep Very Large Array 1.4 GHz observations are available. Combining the 325 MHz and 1.4 GHz data, we obtained the spectral index images and the brightness radial profiles of the diffuse radio emission with a resolution of ~ 1'. The azimuthally averaged spectral index in A2744 is constant to a value close to alpha ~ 1 up to a distance of 1 Mpc from the cluster center. However, the spectral index image shows the presence of localized regions in which the radio spectrum is significantly different from the average. The observed spectral index variations range from a minimum of alpha ~ 0.7 +/- 0.1 to a maximum alpha ~ 1.5 +/- 0.2. From the comparison of the spectral index with the X-rays data it is found for the first time that the flat spectrum regions of the radio halo tend to have higher temperature. In the case of A2219, the radio emission in the central regions of the cluster is dominated by the blend of discrete sources. The azimuthally averaged radio spectrum is alpha ~ 0.8 in the central region of the cluster and is close to a value of alpha ~ 1 in the radio halo. The limited sensitivity of the 325 MHz image does not allowed us to detect all the radio halo structure seen at 1.4 GHz and therefore no constrains on the point-to-point variations of the spectral index have been obtained for this cluster., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, accepted by A&A. Aims. We present the first results of an ongoing project devoted to the search of giant radio halos in galaxy clusters located in the redshift range z=0.2--0.4. One of the main goals of our study is to measure the fraction of massive galaxy clusters in this redshift interval hosting a radio halo, and to constrain the expectations of the particle re--acceleration model for the origin of non--thermal radio emission in galaxy clusters. Methods. We selected 27 REFLEX clusters and here we present Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) observations at 610 MHz for 11 of them. The sensitivity (1$\sigma$) in our images is in the range 35--100~$\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$ for all clusters. Results. We found three new radio halos, doubling the number of halos known in the selected sample. In particular, giant radio halos were found in A 209 and RXCJ 2003.5--2323, and one halo (of smaller size) was found in RXCJ 1314.4--2515. Candidate extended emission on smaller scale was found around the central galaxy in A 3444 which deserves further investigation. Furthermore, a radio relic was found in A 521, and two relics were found in RXCJ 1314.5--2515. The most important evidence of non-thermal phenomena in galaxy clusters comes from Giant Radio Halos (GRHs), synchrotron radio sources extended over Mpc scales, detected in a growing number of massive galaxy clusters. A promising possibility to explain these sources is given by "in situ" stochastic reacceleration of relativistic electrons by turbulence generated in the cluster volume during merger events. Cassano & Brunetti (2005) have recently shown that the expected fraction of clusters with GRHs and the increase of such a fraction with cluster mass can be reconciled with present observations provided that a fraction of 20-30 % of the turbulence in clusters is in the form of compressible modes. In this work we extend these calculations by including a scaling of the magnetic field strength with cluster mass. We show that the observed correlations between the synchrotron radio power of a sample of 17 GRHs and the X-ray properties of the hosting clusters are consistent with, and actually predicted by a magnetic field dependence on the virial mass of the form B \propto M^b, with b>0.5 and typical micro Gauss strengths of the average B intensity. The occurrence of GRHs as a function of both cluster mass and redshift is obtained. The most relevant findings are that the predicted luminosity functions of GRHs are peaked around a power P_{1.4 GHz} 10^{24} W/Hz, and severely cut-off at low radio powers due to the decrease of the electron reacceleration in smaller galaxy clusters. We expect a total number of GRHs to be discovered at ~mJy radio fluxes of ~100 at 1.4 GHz. Finally, the occurrence of GRHs and their number counts at 150 MHz are estimated in view of the fortcoming operation of low frequency observatories (LOFAR, LWA) and compared with those at higher radio frequencies., Comment: 21 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

There are several possibilities to constrain the value of the magnetic field in the ICM, the most direct ones being the combination of inverse Compton and synchrotron observations, and the Faraday rotation measures. Here we discuss on the possibility to provide constraints on the magnetic field in the ICM from the analysis of the statistical properties of the giant radio halos, Mpc--scale diffuse radio emission in galaxy clusters. Present observations of a few well studied radio halos can be interpreted under the hypothesis that the emitting relativistic electrons are re-accelerated on their way out. By using statistical calculations carried out in the framework of the re-acceleration model we show that the observed radio--power vs cluster mass correlation in radio halos can be reproduced only by assuming $\mu$G fields in the ICM and a scaling of the magnetic field with cluster mass $B \propto M_v^b$, with $b \geq 0.6$. We also show that the expected occurrence of radio halos with mass and redshift, and their number counts are sensitive to the magnetic field intensity in massive galaxy clusters and to the scaling of B with cluster mass. Thus future deep surveys of radio halos would provide constraints on B in galaxy clusters., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. Several arguments have been presented in the literature to support the connection between radio halos and cluster mergers. The spectral index distributions of the halos in A665 and A2163 provide a new strong confirmation of this connection, i.e. of the fact that the cluster merger plays an important role in the energy supply to the radio halos. Features of the spectral index (flattening and patches) are indication of a complex shape of the radiating electron spectrum, and are therefore in support of electron reacceleration models. Regions of flatter spectrum are found to be related to the recent merger. In the undisturbed cluster regions, instead, the spectrum steepens with the distance from the cluster center.The plot of the integrated spectral index of a sample of halos versus the cluster temperature indicates that clusters at higher temperature tend to host halos with flatter spectra. We present the results from a Chandra observation of the powerful radio galaxy 3C 265. We detect X-ray emission from the nucleus, the radio hotspots and lobes. In particular, the lobe X-ray emission is well explained as anisotropic inverse Compton scattering of the nuclear photons by the relativistic electrons in the radio lobes; the comparison between radio synchrotron and IC emission yields a magnetic field strength a factor about 2 lower than that calculated under minimum energy conditions. New radio data at 330 MHz are presented for the rich clusters Abell 665 and Abell 2163, whose radio emission is characterized by the presence of a radio halo. These images allowed us to derive the spectral properties of the two clusters under study. The integrated spectra of these halos between 0.3 GHz and 1.4 GHz are moderately steep: alfa(0.3-1.4) = 1.04 and = 1.18, for A665 and A2163, respectively. The spectral index maps, produced with an angular resolution of the order of 1 arcmin, show features of the spectral index (flattening and patches), which are indication of a complex shape of the radiating electron spectrum, and are therefore in support of electron reacceleration models. Regions of flatter spectrum are found to be related to the recent merger activity in these clusters. This is the first strong confirmation that the cluster merger supplies energy to the radio halo. In the undisturbed cluster regions, the spectrum steepens with the distance from the cluster center. Radio and far infrared luminosities of star-forming galaxies follow a tight linear relation. Making use of ASCA and BeppoSAX observations of a well-defined sample of nearby star-forming galaxies, we argue that tight linear relations hold between the X-ray, radio and far infrared luminosities. The effect of intrinsic absorption is investigated taking NGC3256 as a test case. It is suggested that the hard X-ray emission is directly related to the Star Formation Rate. Star formation processes may also account for most of the 2-10 keV emission from LLAGNs of lower X-ray luminosities (for the same FIR and radio luminosity). Deep Chandra observations of a sample of radio-selected star-forming galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field North show that the same relation holds also at high (0.2< z< 1.3) redshift. The X-ray/radio relations also allow a derivation of X-ray number counts up to very faint fluxes from the radio Log N-Log S, which is consistent with current limits and models. We report on the {\it Chandra} discovery of large scale non--thermal emission features in the double lobed SSRL quasar 3C 207 (z=0.684). These are: a diffuse emission well correlated with the western radio lobe, a bright one sided jet whose structure coincides with that of the eastern radio jet and an X-ray source at the tip of the jet coincident with the hot spot of the eastern lobe. The diffuse X-ray structure is best interpreted as inverse Compton (IC) scattering of the IR photons from the nuclear source and provides direct observational support to an earlier conjecture (Brunetti et al., 1997) that the spectrum of the relativistic electrons in the lobes of radio galaxies extends to much lower energies than those involved in the synchrotron radio emission. The X-ray luminous and spatially resolved knot along the jet is of particular interest: by combining VLA and {\it Chandra} data we show that a SSC model is ruled out, while the X-ray spectrum and flux can be accounted for by the IC scattering of the CMB photons (EIC) under the assumptions of a relatively strong boosting and of an energy distribution of the relativistic electrons as that expected from shock acceleration mechanisms. The X-ray properties of the hot spot are consistent with a SSC model. In all cases we find that the inferred magnetic field strength are lower, but close to the equipartition values. The constraints on the energy distribution of the relativistic electrons, imposed by the X-ray spectra of the observed features, are discussed. In this letter we report a Chandra X-ray detection of the double northern hot spot of the radio quasar 3C 351. The hot spot has also been observed in the optical with the Hubble Space Telescope (R-band) and with the 3.5m. Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (B-band). The radio-to-optical and X-ray spectra are interpreted as the results of the synchrotron and synchrotron-self-Compton (SSC) mechanisms, respectively, with hot-spot magnetic field strengths ~3 times smaller than the equipartition values. In the framework of shock acceleration theory, we show that the requirement for such a relatively small field strength is in agreement with the fitted synchrotron spectral models and with the sizes of the hot spots. Finally, we show that the combination of a lower magnetic field strength with the high frequencies of the synchrotron cut-off in the fitted synchrotron spectra provides strong evidence for electron acceleration in the hot spots., Comment: 16 pag. + 2 .PS figures (fig.2 color), ApJ Letter in press

Inverse Compton (IC) scattering of nuclear photons with relativistic electrons in the lobes of powerful radio galaxies and quasars can give detectable extended X-ray emission from the radio lobes if relativistic electrons with a Lorentz factor gamma about 300 are present (Brunetti, Setti, Comastri 1997). In general these electrons are not detected since they emit synchrotron radiation at frequencies below the radio band, so that the study of this effect provides a unique tool to measure the energy distribution of the electron population in the radio lobes at gamma lower than 1000. In this paper we reanalyze the Chandra observation of the powerful and compact radio galaxy 3C 295 for which the IC scattering of nuclear photons is expected to be an important mechanism. We find strong evidence for extended and asymmetrical X-ray emission associated with the radio lobes in the energy band 0.1--2 keV. We show that both the luminosity and morphology of the extended X-ray emission associated with the radio lobes, not compatible with other X-ray mechanisms, can be best interpreted by the IC scattering with nuclear photons. We also show that the relativistic electron energy distribution obtained from the synchrotron radio emission can be extrapolated down to gamma about 100 thus providing a first direct evidence on the electron spectrum in the lobes down to lower energies., Comment: corrected author addresses and type error in Eq.3

We calculate the energy distribution of the relativistic particles injected in the ICM during a phase of reacceleration of the relativistic particles in the cluster volume. We apply our results to the case of the Coma cluster in which recent merging activity and the presence of the radio halo may suggest that reacceleration processes are efficient. We find that the electron population injected in the central part of the cluster by the head-tail radio galaxy NGC 4869 may account for a large fraction, if not all, of the detected EUV excess via inverse Compton scattering of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons. If radio haloes are powered by reacceleration mechanisms active in the cluster volume, moderate non-thermal EUV excesses (of order of $\sim 1-5 \cdot 10^{42}$erg s^{-1}) should be a common feature of clusters containing powerful head-tail radio galaxies and/or AGNs., Comment: 22 pages, plus 9.ps figures, Latex, elsart.cls included, New Astronomy, accepted

In this talk we briefly review the inverse Compton (IC) scattering of nuclear photons in the lobes of radio galaxies and quasars. We concentrate on the possibility to test this model with the Chandra observatory and to constrain the electron energy distribution by measuring the X-ray fluxes produced by this effect. The number of diffuse radio halos in clusters of galaxies has grown in recent years, making it possible to derive statistical properties of these sources and of the hosting clusters. We show that diffuse sources are associated with X-ray luminous clusters which have undergone recent merger processes. The radio and X-ray structures are often similar, and correlations are found between radio and X-ray parameters. A model for the formation and maintenance of these sources is suggested, including a first phase of relativistic particle injection by past major merger events, starbust and AGN activity and a second phase of reacceleration by the energy supplied from shocks and turbulence in a recent merger event., Comment: Contribution to the IAP 2000 Conference "Constructing the Universe with Clusters of Galaxies", Paris, July 2000

The radio spectral index map of the Coma halo shows a progressive steepening of the spectral index with increasing radius. Such a steepening cannot be simply justified by models involving continuous injection of fresh particles in the Coma halo or by models involving diffusion of fresh electrons from the central regions. We propose a {\it two phase} model in which the relativistic electrons injected in the Coma cluster by some processes (starbursts, AGNs, shocks, turbulence) during a {\it first phase} in the past are systematically reaccelerated during a {\it second phase} for a relatively long time ($\sim$ 1 Gyr) up to the present time. We show that for reacceleration time scales of $\sim 0.1$ Gyr this hypothesis can well account for the radio properties of Coma C. For the same range of parameters which explain Coma C we have calculated the expected fluxes from the inverse Compton scattering of the CMB photons finding that the hard X-ray tail discovered by BeppoSAX may be accounted for by the stronger reacceleration allowed by the model. We review the evidence that detectable fluxes of X-rays are produced by inverse Compton scattering of nuclear photons with the relativistic electrons in the radio lobes of strong FRII radio galaxies within the FRII-RL quasar unification scheme. We report here on the possible detection of this effect in two steep spectrum RL quasars. The radio spectral index map of the Coma halo shows a progressive steepening of the spectral index with increasing radius. It is pointed out that copius X-rays from the lobes of FRII radio galaxies are expected as a natural consequence of the unification linking FRIIs and radio-loud quasars. The detection of extended X-ray emission from 3C 219, likely due to Inverse Compton scattering of the IR photons from a hidden quasar with the relativistic electrons in the lobes, provides the first observational evidence supporting this conjecture. The X-ray fluxes detected in the directions of other five pwerful FRIIs with large redshifts may be similarly accounted for (an alternative to a thermal origin from hot intracluster gas). Much less energetic electrons than those producing the synchrotron radio emission are involved in the process. Then the equipartition conditions imply stronger fields, and significantly stronger internal pressures of the relativic plasmas, than those derived with conventional equipartition equations. The contribution of the iron emission line, commonly detected in the X-ray spectra of Seyfert (Sey) galaxies, to the cosmic X-ray background (XRB) spectrum is evaluated in the framework of the XRB synthesis models based on AGN unification schemes. To derive the mean line properties, we have carried out a search in the literature covering a sample of about 70 AGN. When adopting line parameters in agreement with the observations, it turns out that the maximum contribution of the iron line to the XRB is less than 7% at a few keV. Spectral analysis of ROSAT PSPC and ASCA archive data and a recent ROSAT HRI observation of the powerful FRII radio galaxy 3C 219 reveal an absorbed point-like source, coincident with the nucleus, and a non-thermal extended component aligned with the radio structure. The point-like source can be readily interpreted as a hidden quasar in the nucleus, giving further support to the unification scheme of FRII radio galaxies and radio loud quasars. The coincidence between the X-ray (0.1-10 keV) and radio spectral index suggest that most of the emission associated with the extended component is due to the inverse Compton process in the radio lobes. The extended circumnuclear emission can be understood as Compton scattering of the IR-optical radiation emitted by the hidden quasar and surrounding dusty/molecular torus. This is the first observational evidence supporting the existence of this effect, which also probes the relativistic electron spectrum at energies much lower than those involved in the synchrotron radio emission. The observed X-ray flux can be matched by assuming that the energy density of the relativistic particles exceed the equipartition value by about a factor of 10. At larger distances from the nucleus ($\geq 70$kpc) the inverse Compton scattering with the cosmic microwave background photons becomes more important and may explain the observed X-ray features if positive fluctuations in the column densities of relativistic electrons are present. In the framework of the quasar-radio galaxies unification the radio emitting lobes of FRII radio galaxies are pervaded by an intense quasar radiation field.Inverse Compton (IC) scattering between the relativistic electrons and the IR-optical photons from a hidden quasar may provide an important contribution to the X-ray emission of these radio galaxies. The soft X-ray emission properties of six strong, high redshift FRIIs (3C 277.2, 280, 294, 324, 356, 368) are compared with our model expectations,taking into account also the contribution from the IC-scattering of the CMB photons with the radio electrons. We find that the soft X-ray luminosities and spectra of five out six sources can be satisfactorily explained by our model with the exception of 3C 324 whose X-ray emission is probably dwarfed by that of the galaxies'cluster of which this sources is a member. One important effect is the prediction that the observed X-ray emission associated with the two radio lobes would be asymmetric if the radio axis is inclined with respect to the plane of the sky, the far-away lobe being the more luminous.The ratio between the X-ray luminosities of the two lobes is derived for several values of the inclination of the radio axis.However, the predicted angular sizes of these distant radio galaxies are small and difficult to be resolved with present X-ray facilities., Comment: 15 pages, plus 5.ps figures, AA l-aa.sty macro, accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysics, minor changes: Tab.2 substituted and some typewriting errors corrected. The contribution of discrete sources to the gamma--ray background is modeled. Flat spectrum radio quasars are known to make a substantial contribution to the hard (E > 100 MeV) background. The so called ``MeV bump", however, cannot be accounted for in terms of known classes of sources even taking into account the newly discovered class of objects with a broad band spectrum sharply peaked in the MeV range (``MeV blazars"). We report the results of a detailed analysis of the contribution of various classes of AGNs to the extragalactic X-ray background (XRB). The model is based on the unification schemes of AGNs and on their related X-ray spectral properties in the light of recent observational results. The integrated emission from AGNs, when folded with an appropriate cosmological evolution law, can provide a good fit to the XRB over a wide energy range, from several to $\sim$ 100 keV, while it contributes only about 74\% of the ROSAT soft XRB.
