3. Green approaches for the synthesis of layered double hydroxides and evaluation of their biological properties

Abstract

Layered double hydroxides (LDH) consist of brucite-like layers containing di- and trivalent metal ions with interchangeable counter anions and solvation molecules that are present between the layers [1]. LDH find several applications in the pharmaceutical field due to their chemical stability, biocompatibility and high mechanical strength, and they are well known to support cellular processes, such as cell differentiation and viability [2]. LDH have very high potentialities for industrial applications, but their synthesis often requires a high number of steps, which could also lead to the production of great amounts of waste [3]. Given these premises, the goal of the work is the design of sustainable strategies for the synthesis of LDH in view of a continuous manufacturing process. LDH were produced through two well-known methods using new green synthesis conditions and their properties were compared to investigate the differences given by the LDH compositions. In particular, their biological properties were considered for a future application in the biomedical field, especially in tissue engineering. Nitrate salts of Mg2+, Zn2+, Cu2+, Al3+, and Fe3+, chosen as bio-enabling cations, were used. First, a co-precipitation method through a fast addition of salts and reduced aging time was developed, using ammonia as an alkaline agent. Few studies are reported using this chemical for the synthesis of LDH. Being a volatile molecule, the excess of ammonia could be easily removed and trapped, together with some of the byproducts that might be formed during the process. Second, the urea hydrolysis through microwave and hydrothermal treatment was considered. The synthesis parameters were adjusted to minimize the waste production. In all cases, the LDH were characterized both as prepared and upon centrifugation/washing, in view of a single step synthesis without water and components waste. Abstract

Located on the north-western border of the Inle lake basin, the Khaung Daing hot spring outflows at ca. 70°C. Temperature at depth, calculated with chemical geothermometers is probably less than 150°C, therefore classifying it as a medium-low enthalpy geothermal resource. Geochemical and isotopic results also demonstrate that the hot spring is fed by local groundwater, equilibrated with the carbonate rocks but without isotopic exchange with the matrix. Trace elements, particularly As (119 µg/L), display high concentrations, raising some concern about potential environmental and health effects.

Abstract

La Laguna Mar Chiquita, o Mar de Ansenuza, ubicada en la provincia de Córdoba (Argentina) es el quinto lago salado más grande del mundo, ecosistema natural de suma importancia en el continente americano por ser reserva natural de aves migratorias, razón por la cual es un ecosistema incluido en la Lista de Humedales de Importancia Internacional de la Convención sobre los Humedales el 28 de mayo de 2002. Sin embargo, el enfoque de este trabajo es en relación al potencial terapéutico del ecosistema. Desde inicios del siglo XX se cuenta con alguna clase de registro acerca del uso de sus aguas y fangos con propósitos terapéuticos, aunque sin lugar a dudas ya los pueblos originarios aprovechaban sus propiedades en el campo de la salud humana, tal como ha sucedido con otros lagos salinos del mundo. En este libro en particular se detallan los resultados alcanzados en recientes investigaciones realizadas sobre los fangos, sales y agua procedentes de la Laguna Mar Chiquita, en relación a sus propiedades de relevancia en el campo de la terapéutica y cosmética. El libro explora desde el origen geológico del ecosistema, las propiedades del agua de la laguna, la composición y parámetros de relevancia en los fangos, la variedad de sales que pueden obtenerse por precipitación natural o inducida, así como todo el potencial terapéutico de estos materiales. El grupo que ha llevado a cabo estas investigaciones, conformado por Químicos, Ingenieros, Geólogos y Médicos establecidos en distintas partes del mundo y especializados en estas temáticas, ha confluido en un objetivo común: profundizar en el ecosistema Laguna de Mar Chiquita como recurso natural que puede aportar a la salud humana con sus fangos, aguas y sales. Abstract

This study investigates processes of sediment generation in equatorial central Africa. An original, complete and integrated mineralogical-geochemical database on silt-sized sediments derived from different parent rocks (basalt, granite, gneiss, metapsammite, sandstone) along the East African Rift from 5°S in Tanzania to 5°N in Sudan is presented, and used to assess the incidence of diverse factors controlling sediment composition (source-rock lithology, geomorphology, hydraulic-sorting, grain-size, recycling), with particular emphasis on chemical weathering. Kaolinite abundance, CIA and αAl values consistently indicate less intense weathering along the steep inner flank and drier axis of the rift hosting Lakes Kivu and Tanganyika than in hot-humid forested highlands east of the Nile-Congo divide, where slopes are gentler and time for weathering longer. The observed order of bulk-sediment mobility (Na≥Ca>Sr>Mg>K>Ba≥Rb>Cs) roughly corresponds to the degree into which these elements are partitioned in unstable plagioclase versus K-feldspar and phyllosilicates. Weathering-limited erosion characterizes the Rwenzori massif and the Lake Albert graben where sediments are recycled from syn-rift deposits. 87Sr/86Sr ratios, 143Nd/144 Nd ratios and Sm-Nd tDM model ages of river muds proved instead to be insensitive to weathering, and provided a faithful integrated signature of the geology of each drainage basin. The comparison of CIA and WIP indices offers a key for discriminating compositional modifications due to weathering and recycling, a most challenging problem in sedimentary geochemistry. Integrated mineralogical-geochemical databases are essential to improve our understanding of weathering processes as they occur in the natural environment, and to distinguish their effect from other factors controlling sediment composition

El mismo mostró que las temáticas formuladas pueden ser buenos núcleos de estudio para las propuestas didácticas de los estudiantes del profesorado que, en primera instancia, deberán abarcarlas como investigadores y posteriormente, repensarlas y adaptarlas para su inclusión en las currículas de las químicas de los primeros años de carreras universitarias o en asignaturas de nivel medio de enseñanza. Abstract

Ten Iranian bentonites, sampled from the deposits of Chah-Golestan, Chah-Pirouz, Chah-Keshmir and Chah-Taleb (Sarayan), Gholeh-Gelia and Kharman-Sar (Ferdows, Khorasan), Mehrejan (Khoor) and Manian (Zagros) were analyzed to evaluate their potentialities as pharmaceutical products. The mineralogy, chemistry, pH, microbial content, powder flow characteristics, swelling capacity, cation exchange capacity, specific surface area, sedimentation volume, and rheological properties of all samples were determined. The bentonite located in carbonate rocks (Zagros) is made up of calcium montmorillonite (97%) and quartz (3%). The rest of the bentonites are hosted by Eocene volcanic rocks and are mainly made up of sodium montmorillonite (47%–84%) and cristobalite (up to 39%), with lesser quantities of quartz, calcite, plagioclase, zeolites and halite. Two of the samples (those located at Manian and Chah-Golestan C) showed appropriate composition, purity and technical properties to be used in pharmaceutical applications, whereas the rest would require purification or improvement of their properties. 39. Interaction of naproxen with noncrystalline acetyl beta- and acetyl gamma-cyclodextrins in the solid and liquid state.

Abstract

Randomly acetylated, amorphous beta-cyclodextrin (AcbetaCd) and gamma-cyclodextrin (AcgammaCd), having an average substitution degree per anhydroglucose unit, respectively, of 1.1 and 0.95 (approximately 7.7 acetyl residues per macrocycle), were investigated for their interactions in the solid and liquid state with naproxen (NAP). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), supported by X-ray powder diffractometry (XRD), of NAP-AcbetaCd and NAP-AcgammaCd blends revealed an apparent decrease in drug crystallinity which was related to a heating-induced solid-state interaction between the drug and each carrier. A solubility of approximately 0.40 NAP mass fraction in amorphous AcbetaCd and amorphous AcgammaCd at room temperature was determined. Phase-solubility analysis at 25, 37, and 45 degrees C accounted for A(L)-type inclusion complexation of NAP with AcbetaCd (K(1:1,25 degrees C)=4.5(4) x 10(3) l mol(-1)) and AcgammaCd (K(1:1,25 degrees C)=0.80(7) x 10(3) l mol(-1)) and revealed a solubilizing efficiency of AcbetaCd toward NAP approximately 4 times that of AcgammaCd. Equimolar drug-carrier combinations prepared from the respective blends by grinding, kneading, coevaporation and freeze-drying were characterized by DSC and XRD and tested for dissolution rate of NAP using the dispersed amount and continuous flow through methods. The best performance in terms of dissolution rate enhancement (approximately 23 times and approximately 10 times the dissolution efficiency of pure drug in the dispersed amount and continuous flow through tests, respectively) was displayed by the NAP-AcbetaCd colyophilized product.
