We investigated the structural and magnetic properties of 20 nm-sized nanoparticles of the half-doped manganite Ho0.5Ca0.5MnO3 prepared by sol-gel approach. Neutron powder diffraction patterns show Pbnm orthorhombic symmetry for 10 K < T < 290 K, with lattice parameters a, b, and c in the relationship c/√2 < a < b, indicating a cooperative Jahn–Teller effect, i.e., orbital ordering OO, from below room temperature. In contrast with the bulk samples, in the interval 250 < T < 300 K, the fingerprint of charge ordering (CO) does not manifest itself in the temperature dependence of lattice parameters. However, there are signs of CO in the temperature dependence of magnetization. Accordingly, below 100 K superlattice magnetic Bragg reflections arise, which are consistent with an antiferromagnetic phase strictly related to the bulk Mn ordering of a charge exchange-type (CE-type), but characterized by an increased fraction of ferromagnetic couplings between manganese species themselves. Our results show that in this narrow band half-doped manganite, size reduction only modifies the balance between the Anderson superexchange and Zener double exchange interactions, without destabilizing an overall very robust antiferromagnetic state.

OBJECTIVE While nuclear myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) offers many benefits to patients with known or suspected cardiovascular disease, concerns exist regarding radiation-associated health effects. Little is known regarding MPI practice in Africa. We sought to characterise radiation doses and the use of MPI best practices that could minimise radiation in African nuclear cardiology laboratories, and compare these to practice worldwide. METHODS Demographics and clinical characteristics were collected for a consecutive sample of 348 patients from 12 laboratories in six African countries over a one-week period from March to April 2013. Radiation effective dose (ED) was estimated for each patient. A quality index (QI) enumerating adherence to eight best practices, identified a priori by an IAEA expert panel, was calculated for each laboratory. We compared these metrics with those from 7 563 patients from 296 laboratories outside Africa. RESULTS Median (interquartile range) patient ED in Africa was similar to that of the rest of the world [9.1 (5.1-15.6) vs 10.3 mSv (6.8-12.6), p = 0.14], although a larger proportion of African patients received a low ED, ≤ 9 mSv targeted in societal recommendations (49.7 vs 38.2%, p < 0.001). Bestpractice adherence was higher among African laboratories (QI score: 6.3 ± 1.2 vs 5.4 ± 1.3, p = 0.013). However, median ED varied significantly among African laboratories (range: 2.0-16.3 mSv; p < 0.0001) and QI range was 4-8. CONCLUSION Patient radiation dose from MPI in Africa was similar to that in the rest of the world, and adherence to best practices was relatively high in African laboratories. Nevertheless there remain opportunities to further reduce radiation exposure to African patients from MPI.

The photochemical behavior of aqueous solutions of Co(CN)6(super 3-) in the presence of open-chain poly(ethyleneimines) (PEIs) were studied to gather more data on the supramolecular protection of coordination compounds against photoaquation. Results showed that the quantum yield of the photoaquation reaction is quenched by the addition of PEIs. This quenching effect is caused by the formation of adducts between the PEIs and the complex. Hydrogen bonds between some CN1- ligands and protonated N atoms of the PEI prevent the ligands from leaving the first coordination sphere of the metal ion.

Heparan sulfates (HS) are linear sulfated polysaccharides that modulate a wide range of physiological and disease-processes. Variations in HS epimerization and sulfation provide enormous structural diversity, which is believed to underpin protein binding and regulatory properties. The ligand requirements of HS-binding proteins have, however, been defined in only a few cases. We describe here a synthetic methodology that can rapidly provide a library of well-defined HS oligosaccharides. It is based on the use of modular disaccharides to assemble several selectively protected tetrasaccharides that were subjected to selective chemical modifications such as regioselective O- and N-sulfation and selective de-sulfation. A number of the resulting compounds were subjected to enzymatic modifications by 3-O-sulfotransferases-1 (3-OST1) to provide 3-O-sulfated derivatives. The various approaches for diversification allowed one tetrasaccharide to be converted into 12 differently sulfated derivatives. By employing tetrasaccharides with different backbone compositions, a library of 47 HS-oligosaccharides was prepared and the resulting compounds were used to construct a HS microarray. The ligand requirements of a number of HS-binding proteins including fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF-2), and the chemokines CCL2, CCL5, CCL7, CCL13, CXCL8, and CXCL10 were examined using the array. Although all proteins recognized multiple compounds, they exhibited clear differences in structure-binding characteristics. The HS microarray data guided the selection of compounds that could interfere in biological processes such as cell proliferation. Although the library does not cover the entire chemical space of HS-tetrasaccharides, the binding data support a notion that changes in cell surface HS composition can modulate protein function.

BACKGROUND This paper examines the current status of radiation exposure to patients in myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) in Asia. Methods and Results:Laboratories voluntarily provided information on MPI performed over a 1-week period. Eight best practice criteria regarding MPI were predefined by an expert panel. Implementation of ≥6 best practices (quality index [QI] ≥6) was pre-specified as a desirable goal for keeping radiation exposure at a low level. Radiation effective dose (ED) in 1,469 patients and QI of 69 laboratories in Asia were compared against data from 239 laboratories in the rest of the world (RoW). Mean ED was significantly higher in Asia (11.4 vs. 9.6 mSv; P

Four new species of Hohenbuehelia (Fungi: Pleurotaceae) are described in the group of Hohenbuehelia atrocoerulea and Hohenbuehelia grisea. Hohenbuehelia algonquinensis, found on Pinus in Ontario, Canada, may be distinguished macroscopically from bluish collections of H. atrocoerulea and watery grey-brown collections of H. grisea by its coal-black pileus. Hohenbuehelia canadensis, on or associated with Pinus in both Ontario and Alberta, Canada, and Hohenbuehelia nimueae, on Salix in Ontario and Abies in Wyoming, USA, have similarly dark fruiting bodies and were previously misidentified as H. approximans (which we treat as a synonym of H. grisea), H. atrocoerulea, H. mustialensis or H. nigra. The latter species is shown to be a member of Resupinatus, despite the presence of prominent metuloid cystidia in its hymenium. Hohenbuehelia carlothornii has been found in Costa Rica; collections of the sexual fruiting bodies were previously identified as H. grisea and isolates from soil nematodes were identified by the anamorph name Nematoctonus robustus. That name has been treated as a synonym of H. atrocoerulea but, given the genetic and geographic variation within this complex, we transfer it to Hohenbuehelia as a distinct species. Sequences of the nuclear ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer region (ITS), the D1/D2 variable region of the large subunit gene, and a portion of the translation elongation factor (TEF1) gene provide good separation and support for these new species. A key to the dimidiate species of Hohenbuehelia of North America and Europe is provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

International audience; In order to build efficient single-layer polymer photovoltaic devices, the realization of an equivalent distributed p-n junction is proposed. Orientation in the initially centrosymmetric material is obtained by ordering polar molecules contained in a polymer matrix with a DC field. The molecular rectification effect induced in an oriented polymer film improves the efficiency of polymeric semiconducting devices like solar cells. The first experiments were conducted with a poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) matrix containing azo-dye compounds (such as the Disperse Red 1, DR1) as the polar molecules, grafted onto the chains of the polymer backbones. Although this material allows for high orientation efficiencies, it is not adapted for photovoltaic applications, since DR1-MMA has very poor semiconducting properties due to the dielectric nature of PMMA. Organic semiconductors are uncommon and it is difficult to find an appropriate polymer system. We present preliminary results obtained for two intrinsically semiconducting and dye-functionalised polymer systems which may be found applicable in the fabrication of organic photovoltaic solar cells using the concept of polar molecular ordering. We use polymer systems with a covalent bond between the dye molecule and conjugated backbone to obtain a high dye content and to avoid phase separation problems. To achieve the largest stable molecular polar orientation possible and to optimise the electric field stored in an oriented structure, we studied the orientation parameters of samples,i.e., the orientation field, temperature, poling duration, and cooling conditions.
