BACKGROUND RESULTS CONCLUSIONS The aqueous extraction of sesame oil is a traditional process that generates a large amount of melanoidins. However, little is known about the characteristics and bioactive functions of these melanoidins.Electronic tongue, fluorescence emission spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analyses indicated that melanoidins from sesame residues (MELs) are brown macromolecular compounds with protein skeletons and heteroaromatic ring structures, a bitter taste, and instability in strong oxidative and reductive environments. The MELs demonstrated inhibitory effects on α‐glucosidase, α‐amylase and pancreatic lipase in vitro. These MELs mitigated weight loss in mice with type 2 diabetes (T2DM), reduced their fasting blood glucose to 54.73% (500 mg kg−1 day−1) of the initial value, increased the glycogen levels in the liver and skeletal muscles, lowered blood lipid levels, and protected the liver. Western blot analysis revealed that MELs inhibited the activities of enzymes such as PEPCK, FBPase, and G6Pase through the IRS‐1/PI3K/Akt and AMPK pathways, increased the activity of the enzymes hexokinase (HK) and pyruvate kinase (PK), enhanced liver glycolytic ability, and promoted liver glycogen synthesis, thereby reducing blood glucose levels in T2DM mice. Moreover, MELs reduced the ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroides (F/B) in the intestines of T2DM mice, increased the relative abundance of beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus, Coprococcus, and Ruminococcus, and reduced the propionic acid content.Melanoidins can regulate T2DM by activating the IRS‐1/PI3K/Akt and AMPK‐signaling pathways and ameliorating gut microbiota imbalances in T2DM mice. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry. Oxidation of fats in food greatly reduces their shelf life and causes food of unacceptable quality to be presented to the customer. In this regard, this research was conducted with the aim of increasing the oxidative stability of sesame oil with nanoliposomes containing the antioxidant extract of yarrow plant. In this study, 6 concentrations of nanoliposomes containing yarrow plant extract (0, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 ppm) were used in sesame oil, and tests such as acidity, peroxide, thiobarbituric acid index, conjugate diene were performed on those oils. And after finding the best concentration of nanoliposome containing yarrow extract, this sample was compared with the sample containing the same amount of free yarrow extract and also the sample with 200 ppm BHT after 7 days of storage at 63 degrees Celsius. The results showed that with increasing storage time, acidity level, thiobarbituric acid index and conjugate diene increased, but with the increase of nanoliposome containing 500 ppm of yarrow extract, these characteristics decreased and then increased. Unlike other characteristics, the peroxide content of the samples decreased from the 5th day onwards. On the other hand, it was found that the sample containing 500 ppm of free yarrow extract had the highest level of acidity, peroxide, thiobarbituric acid index and conjugate diene. The highest oxidative stability (14.21 hours) belonged to the oil with nanoliposome containing 500 ppm of yarrow extract. The dominant fatty acid in sesame oil containing nanoliposome as well as control was linoleic acid, and the use of antioxidants did not significantly change the fatty acid profile of sesame oil. Nickel and titanium (NiTi) based shape memory alloys (SMAs) are novel materials endowed with exceptional super-elasticity, corrosion resistance, and shape memory capabilities, making them well-suited for biomedical and industrial applications. The current study explores the impact of process parameters in powder mixed micro-electrical discharge milling (µ-EDM) on NiTi SMA, focusing on pulse on time (TON), voltage, pulse off time (TOFF), and RPM individually, employing a one factor at a time (OFAT) methodology to analyze surface characteristics, surface roughness (Ra), and material removal rate (MRR). The impact of black phosphorus powder combined with sesame oil (dielectric) on the surface of fabricated channels in commonly used biomaterials was investigated. The cytotoxicity test for biocompatibility was carried out to enhance the cell viability up to 79.89% after machining, which showed enhanced cell viability. The highest MRR the lowest Ra were obtained at the best input factors combination of 24 µs (TON), 6 µs (TOFF), 240 V, and 50 RPM tool rotation. Consumer use of cannabidiol (CBD) is growing, but there are still data gaps regarding its possible adverse effects on reproduction and development. Multiple pathways and signaling cascades involved in organismal development and neuronal function, including endocannabinoid synthesis and signaling systems, are well conserved across phyla, suggesting that Caenorhabditis elegans can model the in vivo effects of exogenous cannabinoids. The effects in C. elegans on oxidative stress response (OxStrR), developmental timing, juvenile and adult spontaneous locomotor activity, reproductive output, and organismal CBD concentrations were assessed after exposure to purified CBD or a hemp extract suspended in 0.5% sesame oil emulsions. In C. elegans, this emulsion vehicle is equivalent to a high-fat diet (HFD). As in mammals, HFD was associated with oxidative-stress-related gene expression in C. elegans adults. CBD reduced HFD-induced OxStrR in transgenic adults and counteracted the hypoactivity observed in HFD-exposed wild-type adults. In C. elegans exposed to CBD from the onset of feeding, delays in later milestone acquisition were irreversible, while later juvenile locomotor activity effects were reversible after the removal of CBD exposure. CBD-induced reductions in mean juvenile population body size were cumulative when chronic exposures were initiated at parental reproductive maturity. Purified CBD was slightly more toxic than matched concentrations of CBD in hemp extract for all tested endpoints, and both were more toxic to juveniles than to adults. Rice bran oil is recommended by the World Health Organization as one of the three major healthy edible oils (along with corn and sesame oils), owing to its unique fatty acid composition and functional components. This study screened, organized, and analyzed a large number of studies retrieved through keyword searches, and investigated the nutritional value and safety of rice bran oil. It reviews the stability of raw rice bran materials and the extraction and refining process of rice bran oil and discusses food applications and sub-health regulations. Research has found that a delayed stabilization treatment of rice bran seriously affects the overall quality of rice bran oil. Compared with traditional solvent extraction, the new extraction technologies have improved the yield and nutritional value of rice bran oil, but most of them are still in the research stage. Owing to the lack of economical and applicable supporting production equipment, extraction is difficult to industrialize, which is a challenging research area for the future. Rice bran oil has stronger antioxidant stability than other edible oils and is more beneficial to human health; however, its application scope and consumption are limited owing to the product price and lack of understanding. Rice bran oil has significant antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, hypoglycemic, lipid-lowering, and neuroprotective effects. Fragrant edible sesame oil is popular for its unique aroma. The aroma of sesame oil is determined by its volatile organic compound (VOC) profile. Sesame oils produced by different techniques could have different VOC profiles. In addition, blending fragrant sesame oil with refined oil could also alter the VOC profile of the final product. Current practices in aroma analysis, such as sensory evaluation and gas chromatography (GC), still face many restraints. Hence, there is a need for alternatives. We present a novel 14-unit multiplexed paper-based colorimetric sensor for fragrant sesame oil VOC analysis. The sensor was designed to visualize the VOC profile as a color "fingerprint". The sensor was validated with 55 branded sesame oil samples produced by two different techniques, i.e., hot pressing and small milling; the experimental results suggested a processing dependency in color VOC fingerprints. The sensor also demonstrated the potential to detect the change in sesame oil VOC profile due to blending with refined oil, with an estimated limit of detection down to 20% v/v of the refined oil. The colorimetric sensor might be used as a simple, rapid, and cost-effective analytical tool in the production and quality control of fragrant sesame oil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sesamin, a lignan component of sesame seed oil, has shown pharmacologic benefits, such as anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory qualities. However, the amount of data available to the field is surprisingly sparse, as for instance there is no known spectroscopic characterization of sesamin. This work provides the first experimental infrared spectrum of sesamin. Sesamin powder was subjected to experimental Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and the resulting spectrum was compared to quantum chemical calculations of sesamin's stereoisomers in various hydration states. Major peaks of sesamin were assigned vibrational modes through comparison of computed and observed spectra. Porous liquids (PLs) are a new type of fluid sorbent investigated mainly for the separation of gas mixtures. Here, we explore their application to the separation of miscible liquids, using MEG/water (MEG=monoethylene glycol) and EtOH/water as proof‐of‐principle. Recovery of used MEG is industrially important but its extraction into conventional solvents from water is difficult. PLs ZIF‐8@PDMS (PL1, PDMS=polydimethylsilicone) or ZIF‐8@sesame oil (PL2) each consisting of 25 wt % of the hydrophobic microporous material ZIF‐8 dispersed in PDMS or sesame oil respectively, were formulated and found to be exceedingly physically stable to sedimentation. A 5 nm PEEK membrane was used to provide a permeable barrier between the PL and the alcohol/water phase. MEG was selectively extracted through the membrane from approximately 50 : 50 wt % MEG/water mixtures into the PL phase and this procedure could be applied repeatedly. It was effective for MEG/water mixtures as dilute as 3 : 97 wt %. The PL could also be regenerated (80 °C at 0.01 bar) and re‐used, suggesting its potential for continuous, cyclic extraction. Furthermore, PL3 (silicalite‐1@PDMS) was effective in selective alcohol extraction from beverages. It shows potential for lowering the alcohol concentration in gin or wine due to its excellent chemical stability and nontoxicity. Overall, we show that the enhanced adsorption properties of PLs due the presence of empty pores, which provides unusually high gas solubilities, also makes them, in principle, applicable to liquid‐liquid separations. Background. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is commonly associated with obesity and may be exacerbated by the lack of vitamin D3. Aim. The study aimed to investigate the effects of vitamin D3 administration in female rats with PCOS and prolonged high fat diet (HFD). Methods. Forty-four female Wistar rats, 180-200 g, 10 weeks old, were randomly allocated into 2 groups (n=22) that received a single dose intramuscular injection of: sesame oil (group I), or estradiol valerate (5 mg) in sesame oil (group II). After 4 weeks, intraovarian cysts developed in group II, as evidenced by ultrasonography. In the next step, half of rats from each group received standard diet (SD) and the other half high fat diet, through oral gavage, for 17 weeks, the following groups being obtained: Control (SD), HFD, PCOS (PCOS+SD) and PCOS+HFD. Next, all the rats received, for 5 weeks, 500 UI/kg/day vitamin D3, through oral gavage. Lipid peroxidation was assessed through malondialdehyde level in the ovary and periovarian tissue and the inflammation was quantified in ovary by NFkB, pNFkB, NRF2 and SOD1 expressions. Ovaries from all groups were collected for histopathological analysis. Blood samples were taken to evaluate the basal insulin, triglycerides and total cholesterol levels throughout the experiment. Results. Both groups with PCOS recorded significant increases of malondialdehyde in ovaries (p<0.001) and in periovarian tissue, especially in PCOS+HFD (p<0.05), even after vitamin D3 administration. PCOS+HFD group treated with vitamin D3 showed a high degree of inflammation in ovarian histopathology but with decreased pNFkB expression (p<0.01) while PCOS group recorded an increased SOD1 expression (p<0.05). Additionally, vitamin D3 treatment attenuated the insulin level (p<0.001) in PCOS and in HFD groups and the total cholesterol level in PCOS+HFD group, but triglycerides recordings were without statistical significance (p>0.05). HFD induced inflammation in ovaries, evidenced histologically and through increases of COX2 expressions (p<0.05) without significant influences on oxidative stress and on cholesterol levels. Conclusions. Polycystic ovary syndrome is associated with oxidative stress and inflammation in the ovary tissue and in blood with increased levels of insulin, total cholesterol and triglycerides that might be partially mitigated by vitamin D3 oral administration. Cookies are an exceptional energy source due to their elevated fat and carbohydrate content. Beyond their delectable taste, they are also rich in essential nutrients, including valuable proteins and minerals. This study evaluated the potential of the wheat variety NARC‐2011 for cookie production, focusing on nutritional enhancement by adding white sesame seeds at different proportions (5%, 10%, and 15%) to both whole and fine wheat flour. White sesame seeds were added to cookies mainly for their visual appeal, creating a nice contrast with the dough. They also have a mild flavor that complements the cookie without overwhelming it. Besides, they pack essential nutrients like protein, fiber, calcium, and iron, making the cookies more nutritious. The physical, chemical, and sensory properties of the different cookies were evaluated using standard methods. In terms of physical parameters, fine wheat flour cookies exhibited a diameter (46.45–50.47 mm), thickness (8.47–9.77 mm), and spreading factor (5.16–5.46 mm), and whole wheat flour cookies exhibited a diameter (48.47–52.31 mm), thickness (9.22–10.73 mm), and spreading factor (4.87–5.25 mm). Chemical analysis revealed moisture (5.78%–7.66%), fat (10.89%–16.16%), fiber (6.10%–8.46%), ash (4.82%–7.40%), protein (0.74%–1.40%), non‐fiber carbohydrates (63.67%–67.55%) for fine wheat flour cookies, and moisture (5.67%–7.39%), fat (10.89%–16.16%), fiber (11.47%–15.98%), ash (0.54%–0.83%), protein (5.65%–8.13%), non‐fiber carbohydrates (57.86%–66.55%), total phenolic content (2.86 mg/g), flavonoids (1.46 mg/g), and antioxidant activity (80.76%) in whole wheat flour cookies with sesame fortification. Gas chromatography revealed higher unsaturated fatty acids (83.22%) in NARC‐2011 wheat oil compared to white sesame seed oil (79.78%). In sensory evaluations, cookies fortified with 10% sesame seeds in fine wheat flour received the highest level of acceptability from the panelists. On the other hand, cookies made from whole wheat flour fortified with 15% sesame seeds garnered the maximum acceptability ratings from the panelists. In conclusion, supplementing NARC‐2011 wheat flour with sesame seeds, whether in fine or whole wheat form, improves the quality of cookies and nutritional content while offering appropriate sensory attributes at particular sesame seed levels. This study investigates the use of a non-destructive ultrasonic pulse-echo method to characterize argan oil and other vegetable oils with similar fatty acid profiles. Ultrasonic parameters such as velocity, acoustic attenuation and reflection coefficient were measured across different temperatures. These parameters were used to create predictive models of ultrasonic velocity using partial least squares regression. Results demonstrated significant correlations between ultrasonic properties, oil temperature and fatty acid content. Specifically, ultrasonic velocity was found to be directly proportional to the content of saturated fatty acids and inversely proportional to the content of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. The reflection coefficient was also found to correlate with the fatty acid composition and temperature of the oils. Additionally, both ultrasonic velocity and acoustic attenuation decreased as the temperature increased from 25 °C to 50 °C. At 25 °C, the acoustic attenuation for argan oil was 22.37 Np/m, decreasing to 11.37 Np/m at 50 °C. These correlations allowed for the differentiation between food-grade argan oil, argan oil from seeds regurgitated by goats, sesame oil and peanut oil. The developed predictive models exhibited high coefficients of determination, with a value of 97.03 for argan oil, indicating strong agreement between measured and predicted ultrasonic velocities. The main objective of the present trial was to examine the efficacy of feeding tilapia fry fish on Artemia franciscana diets supplemented with various oil emulsion resources in terms of performance, behavior indices, survival rate, blood biochemical parameters, and immunological response. Four hundred Nile tilapia fry (weighing 0.15±0.05 g and measuring 2.17±0.08 cm) were randomly allocated into four equal groups (each with five repetitions) and acclimatized for fifteen days. The first group served as the control and received unenriched Artemia franciscana (G0), while the remaining three groups were fed Artemia franciscana diets enriched with different oil resources (0.5 mL oil per liter for 6 hours): soybean oil (G1), sesame oil (G2), and rice bran oil (G3). Behavioral observations were recorded during the 45-day experimental period. At the end of the feeding trial, the chemical composition and fatty acid content of both Artemia and fingerlings were analyzed. Furthermore, the growth performance, survival, and immune response of the fingerlings were evaluated. The results indicated noticeable improvements in behavioral measurements (feeding, foraging and schooling), performance (final length, final weight, net weight gain, feed conversion ratio and specific growth rate), survival, and immune response among fry fish supplemented with enriched Artemia, particularly those enriched with soybean oil. Additionally, the chemical composition and fatty acid content of both Artemia and fish fry were significantly enhanced when oil emulsions are applied, with soybean oil demonstrating the most prominent improvements. Whereas, supplementing fry fish Artemia diets with oil resulted in lower liver enzyme activity and higher protein component levels in plasma in comparison to the control group. In brief, feeding Nile tilapia fry fish Artemia diets enriched with a soybean oil emulsion (0.5 mL/L) is recommended for promoting high performance, immunological activity, and survival throughout the early stage till fingerlings phase. Summary: In this study, sesame hull oil (SHO) was extracted to characterise its composition. SHO was heated to determine the volatiles and their effect on the quality of cold‐pressed dehulled sesame oil (SO). Seventeen fatty acids, four lignans (1088.65 mg/100 g), tocopherols (284.17 mg/100 g) mainly in the γ‐form, and sterol (1722.16 mg/100 g, 4.67 times more than in sesame kernel oil) were detected in SHO. After heating, the volatiles found in SHO were mainly aldehydes and acids, represented by hexanal (fatty, green aroma) and 3‐methyl‐butanoic acid (fatty, rancid aroma), respectively. The acid value, peroxide value, anisidine value, and turbidity of SO increased significantly after adding SHO, and the scavenging ability of 2,2‐diphenyl‐1‐picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) was enhanced. The oxidation induction times of SO with the addition of SHO ranged from 8.93 to 9.53 h. The present study provides information about SHO and a new direction for the utilisation of sesame hulls. The roasting process of sesame oil is expected to alter its internal composition and stability under oxidation condition. Presumably, the effect of roasting may differ with oxidation conditions (i.e., thermal and photo-oxidation), but such studies have not been undertaken. To further evaluate this notion, several type of sesame oils (raw and refined as unroasted oil, and roasted oil) and rapeseed oils as comparison were subjected to thermal oxidation (120°C) and photo-oxidation (50,000 lx) for 5 and 10 hours. The result revealed that the roasting sesame oil exhibited good stability under thermal oxidation, possibly due to the change on antioxidant agents such as sesamol and Maillard products during the roasting process. In contrast, the refined sesame oil (unroasted) demonstrated high stability under photo-oxidation, indicating that the refining process has a more significant impact on the oxidative stability in sesame oil compared to the alterations in its components caused by the roasting process. Taken together, this study is the first to show that the roasting and refining processes of sesame oil alter its internal composition and show different variations in sesame oils' oxidative stability under thermal and photo-oxidation, which holds significance considering its global consumption. This study delineates biobased foods. Curcumin (CRU) delivery modules were studied using pectin gel, Sesame oil (SO), and Kokum butter (KB) oleogel (OG). SB1, the control, has 10% OG. The pectin gel between 10 and 50% oleogel were emulsified by 2.5% tween 80. Surface, physical, chemical, and physiochemical properties of prepared bigels were examined. Microscopic studies show biphasic feature. With OG content, FTIR shows hydrogen bonding increasing and decreasing. XRD confirmed gel amorphousness. Stress relaxation indicated 10% control bigel had considerably less strength. Bigel impedance factors increased considerably with OG content, according to impedance profiles. The moisture study found that replacing hydro phase with OG phase in formulations reduced moisture content from 10 to 50%. Less CRU released from 20 to 50% bigel matrices than 10% during in vitro studies. Acidic pH hindered polymer relaxation, altering release behaviour. The environmental problems caused by thermal reactions have prompted the search for new approaches. Photochemical curing, which uses light energy, offers a sustainable solution for polymerizing complex polymers, reducing energy consumption, and emissions. Current study involves cationic UV‐curing of biobased polyurethanes (PU) with a thermo‐responsive shape memory behavior on very low temperature almost equal to human body temperature. This product has a potential to be utilized as drug carrier or related biomedical applications, as well as self‐tightening materials against human body heat. Polymer has been designed from sesame oil, with slight modification through a facile epoxidation approach. Main objectives of this research were to prepare biobased PU recipe; to utilize a specially designed UV‐curing approach for this synthesis; and to develop shape memory properties upon sensing human body temperature. Prepared material has been analyzed through FTIR, SEM, TGA, DSC, water absorption capacity (WAC), and gel contents (GCs). Shape memory behavior has been tested in both air and water against a range of temperatures (35°C–80°C). At 35°C in 208 s, prepared sample, presented 96.60% Rr and 90.56% Rf, whereas at 80°C in 55 s Rr increased to 98.33% and Rf increased to 100%. Nowadays, many studies have been carried out to develop new eco-friendly alternatives consequently, the essential oils (EOs) have acquired more interest due to their insecticidal activities, low harmfulness, and rapid degradation in the environment. Following this approach, herein we tried to improve the insecticidal activities of Pelargonium graveolens (G) through using the geranium oil in nano-emulsion (GN) form and in combination with sesame seed oil (SO). Different concentrations ranged from 0.313 to 10% were prepared from GN and the combination of G with S and tested for their larvicidal and pupicidal activities against Musca domestica and Culex pipiens, while their adulticidal activities were tested against red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum. The LC50 of G alone was 4.29% against house fly larvae. The values of LC50 decreased to 1.50% for GN and 0.32% for the combination of G+S. GO and GN form induced (pupal toxicity) 100% inhibition rate (PIR) in the treated housefly pupae at the concentration of 10%. Meanwhile, GO+SO combination showed 100% PIR at the concentration of 2.5%. Furthermore, the LC50 for GO, GN and GO+SO was 0.22, 0.19 and 0.079 % respectively against larvae of C. pipiens, while it was 1.04 % for sesame oil. Regarding the contact and fumigant assays against adult T. castaneum, the combination of G and S achieved the best results when compared with GO alone or GN form. All treatments exhibited inhibition in the activity of acetylcholinesterase enzyme in the house fly larvae 24h post application. In addition, all the treatments induced significant increase in the malondialdehyde activity. In conclusion, nanoemulsion tech and mixing GO+SO increased their insecticidal potency against house fly, C. pipiens and T. castenum. This is a useful method in the integrated pest management. Sesame seeds and their edible oil are highly nutritious and rich in mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Bioactive compounds such as sterols, tocopherols, and sesamol provide significant medicinal benefits. The high oil content (50%) and favorable mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acid balance, as well as resilience to water stress, make sesame a promising candidate crop for global agricultural expansion. However, sesame production faces challenges such as low yields, poor response to agricultural inputs, and losses due to capsule dehiscence. To enhance yield, traits like determinate growth, dwarfism, a high harvest index, non-shattering capsules, disease resistance, and photoperiod sensitivity are needed. These traits can be achieved through variation or induced mutation breeding. Crossbreeding methods often result in unwanted genetic changes. The gene editing CRISPR/Cas9 technology has the potential to suppress detrimental alleles and improve the fatty acid profile by inhibiting polyunsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis. Even though sesame is an orphan crop, it has entered the genomic era, with available sequences assisting molecular breeding efforts. This progress aids in associating single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and simple sequence repeats (SSR) with key economic traits, as well as identifying genes related to adaptability, oil production, fatty acid synthesis, and photosynthesis. Additionally, transcriptomic research can reveal genes involved in abiotic stress responses and adaptation to diverse climates. The mapping of quantitative trait loci (QTL) can identify loci linked to key traits such as capsule size, seed count per capsule, and capsule number per plant. This article reviews recent advances in sesame breeding, discusses ongoing challenges, and explores potential strategies for future improvement. This study investigated whether pre-treating sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) seeds with a combination of acid-soaking and microwave-heating could significantly enhance the quality of the resulting sesame oil, particularly by increasing its content of functional compounds such as lignans, tocopherol, phytosterol, and squalene. The study revealed that soaking the sesame seeds in a solution of HCl and citric acid, along with microwave-heating, significantly increased the content of these compounds. The detected ranges were sesamin (1365–6927 µg g−1), sesamolin (605–3493 µg g−1), tocopherol (69.31–282.76 µg g−1), asarinin (ND–383.52 µg g−1), sesamol (ND–49.59 µg g−1), phytosterol (3690–6201 µg g−1), and squalene (532−1628 µg g−1). Additionally, the study found that the pre-treatment of sesame seeds had a minimal effect on the fatty acid composition, antioxidant activity (92.94–95.08% DPPH scavenging activity), and oxidative stability (2.13–2.90 mg MDA kg−1 oil). This is the first study to demonstrate that using acid-soaking and microwave-heating to prepare sesame seeds can produce sesame oil enriched with functional compounds, potentially benefiting cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and health applications. In this paper, a simple and efficient approach is presented to classify different power materials based on a one port microwave sensor in X-band. This classification focuses on powder materials, unlike prior studies that focused on liquids (castor oil, neem oil, sunflower oil, sesame oil, and mahua oil), this classification represents a shift towards powdered materials. The response of the proposed sensor is enhanced by adding a metamaterial (MTM) unit cell of F-shape to focus electromagnetic waves on the sample under test. This metamaterial-based sensor is designed to differentiate between different types of materials based on the corresponding reflection coefficient. The sample under test is included inside a dielectric box inserted inside a rectangular waveguide. The MTM unit cell is added on the front face of this box towards the direction of the incident wave. The resonance frequency depends on the characteristics of the powder material inside the box. The MTM unit cell enhances this resonance to simplify the process of classification of different materials. The measured results show that the proposed sensor can detect a wide range of powder materials, including clay, cement, sand, and mixtures: cement & sand, and clay & sand. One of the oldest oilseed crops is sesame, which is mainly cultivated due to its valuable oleic/linolenic fatty acid ratio. The application of precise irrigation and fertilisation is crucial to ensure the continuity and productivity of sesame production, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. This study aimed to determine the effect of drip irrigation and nitrogen levels on sesame's oil and fatty acid composition. For this purpose, four nitrogen doses (N0: 0 kg ha−1, N30: 30 kg ha−1, N60: 60 kg ha−1 and N90: 90 kg ha−1) and three different irrigation water levels (I50, I75 and I100, which correspond to 50, 75 and 100% evaporation levels from the evaporation of the Class A pan) were applied. The highest oleic acid content (43.06%) was obtained for the I75N90 treatment. In the case of linoleic fatty acid, the greatest value (43.66%) was for I50N0 treatment. The effects of irrigation and nitrogen doses on oleic acid and linoleic acid content were inverse of each other. An increase in applied irrigation water increased the linoleic acid content. However, it caused a decrease in oleic acid content. Increasing the nitrogen dose increased the oleic acid content and caused a decrease in linoleic acid content. Furthermore, this study showed that the I50N60 treatment (50% Epan and a rate of 60 kg N ha−1) is the most effective for achieving high grain and oil yields in sesame cultivation. Background: Only scattered information is available on the tillage and nutrient management information for the sesame crop following rice in the literature. Sesame as an edible oil yielding crop with high levels of unsaturated fatty acids has high international demand due to superior health benefits. Being a small seeded crop, it requires standard tillage and nutrient management to obtain optimum productivity under rice fallow ecologies. As a sequential crop after rice harvest, the tillage and nutrient management practices followed for the preceding rice have astounding effects on the succeeding sesame crop. To better understand and manipulate the agro ecology in the rice fallow culture, it is necessary to study the behaviour of sesame cultivars, in relation to the tillage requirements and macro nutrient factors that have a bearing on the productivity. Methods: The aim of this work was to evaluate the productivity of rice fallow sesame in the southern plateau and hills regions of the Indian sub-continent (Tamil Nadu) with a hypothesis that tillage and nutrient management would immensely benefit the sesame crop. Field experiments were conducted at TNAU, Tamil Nadu Rice Research Institute, Aduturai, Tamil Nadu during 2019–2020 and 2020–2021 with tillage practices (reduced tillage, conventional tillage and zero tillage) and fertilizer doses (zero percent RDF, 25% RDF, 50% RDF, 75% RDF and 100% RDF) in a split plot design replicated thrice. Results: The results have clearly indicated that the performance of rice fallow sesame was poor under zero till conditions as the sesame crop is poorly adapted leading to a yield penalty up to 68%. A total of 75% RDF has yielded statistically similar yield to that of 100% RDF to the rice fallow sesame. Sesame is one of the important oilseeds across the globe for edible, pharmaceutical and cosmetic purposes. Sesame is low water requiring crop and grows well on marginal land with less inputs. The study aimed to evaluate the growth, yield and oil content of three sesame varieties TS-3, TS-5 and TH-6 in response to various foliar applications of salicylate (50 mgL-1), ascorbate (50 mgL-1), hydrogen peroxide (40 µML-1) and L-Methionine (150 mgL-1). Field trial was executed during May 2021 at Agronomic Research Farm, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad by employing factorial design and three replications. Irrigation was applied first at 25 days after sowing and second after 70 days while as the foliar amendments of growth promoters was applied at 50, 60 and 70 days of crop life. From the results of this experiment, it is concluded that, the variety TH-6 is short duration as compared to other varieties. Effect of foliar application showed significant impact on sesame varieties. The best results were recorded under salicylic acid treatments followed by ascorbic acid and L-methionine while as the least response was recorded without foliar application. The number of seeds per pod, harvest index, thousand seed weight, seed yield kgha-1 and oil contents were recorded maximum under variety TH-6 when exposed to salicylic acid treatment while as the minimum response was showed in variety TS-3. Moreover, the highest phenolic content was determined by employing ascorbic acid (50 mgL-1) followed by salicylic acid (50 mgL-1) and the lowest findings were recorded where without foliar application. However, the emerged proline content was assessed in all sesame varieties with control treatment whereas the least findings were recorded from L-Methionine (150 mgL-1) treatment. The Indian meal moth, Plodia interpunctella, poses a significant threat to global agricultural products. Although pheromone-based technologies show promise for P. interpunctella management, limitations such as single-sex targeting necessitate exploring complementary strategies. Vegetable-based oils represent a potential alternative but their efficacy, sex-specificity, and interaction with sex pheromones remain unclear. To address these questions, we first examined the attraction of P. interpunctella female and male adults to 10 commercially available vegetable oils in semi-field conditions. Sesame, olive, and blended oils were the most attractive, capturing significantly more adults compared to other oils. We then evaluated the effectiveness of these three attractive oils and their combinations with P. interpunctella sex pheromones in a grain warehouse. Traps baited with these oils captured significantly more females and males compared to control traps without attractants; however, the addition of sex pheromones did not improve male capture and significantly reduced female capture, suggesting an inhibitory effect. Finally, we demonstrated that female mating status (mated vs. virgin) did not influence the attractiveness of traps baited with these effective oils. Our findings highlight the potential of standalone traps baited with blended, olive, or sesame oil as a practical, economic, and effective management strategy for P. interpunctella in storage facilities. Abstract FADS1 rs174556 polymorphism influences on dietary fats metabolism and type 2 diabetes (T2DM). This study aimed to compare the effect of three oils of sesame, canola and sesame-canola on cardio metabolic factors across genotypes of rs174556 variant in patients with type 2 of diabetes. This study was a randomized triple-blind three-way cross-over clinical trial. 95 Subjects with T2DM replaced their regular dietary oil with sesame oil, canola oil, or sesame-canola oil for three 9-week phases and completed the study. There were three anthropometric measurements, blood sampling and biochemical assessments at the beginning, middle, and at the end of each phase for assessments. Genotyping was conducted using the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR–RFLP) method. In the crude model, there was an interaction between consumed oils and rs174556 variant on serum concentration of Apolipoprotein A-I (ApoA-1). During intake of sesame oil, lower levels of triglycerides (TG) were observed in individuals with TT genotype compared to C allele carriers’ allele, which remained significant in adjusted models. Compared to C allele carrier’s, the people with TT genotype experienced significant increase and decrease in serum levels of HDL and TG, respectively in adjusted models. Also, the subjects who consumed sesame-canola oil had lower serum concentrations of fasting blood glucose than those who received sesame and canola oils, regardless of used oils and genotypes. FADS1 Gene variant (rs174556) might modify cardiometabolic changes following dietary vegetable oils. Larger longitudinal studies especially randomized clinical trials are needed to clarify these associations.

Objective(s): Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a major public concern and one of the primary types of dementia characterized by memory impairment and cognitive decline. Although the properties of exercise training and cannabidiol (CBD) treatments for improving AD have recently been revealed, the exact mechanisms remain unknown. Therefore, this study highlights the interactive impact of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and CBD administration on improving cognitive impairment in a rat model of amyloid beta (Aβ)-induced AD through modulating the expression of apolipoprotein E (APOE), presenilin-1, and glutamate proteins. Materials and Methods: After acclimatization, the animals were randomly assigned into seven subgroups: control (CNT), Sham, Alzheimer (AL), Alzheimer + HIIT (AL + HIIT), Alzheimer + cannabidiol (AL + CBD), Alzheimer + CBD + HIIT (AL + CBD + HIIT), and model (sacrificed ten days after surgery to confirm the induction of AD) groups. To induce AD, rats received an intrahippocampal injection of Aβ. The animals in exercise groups performed the HIIT protocol, and the rats in CBD groups were administered 20 mg/kg CBD suspended in sesame oil for six weeks. Following the experimental protocol, serum and hippocampus tissue were collected for histopathological and western blot analysis. Results: Our findings indicated that both HIIT and CBD treatments were efficacious in ameliorating Aβ deposition and modulating biomarkers of AD, including APOE, presenilin-1, and glutamate. However, the interactive effect of HIIT and CBD supplementation was more effective. Conclusion: Our findings demonstrated the positive therapeutic effect of HIIT and CBD interventions, particularly HIIT combined with CBD, on alleviating AD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and objectives: The Mediterranean Diet (MD) has been recognized for its benefits for human health and sustainability for the planet, but it has considered not easy to reproduce in other populations. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Chair on Health Education and Sustainable Development is fostering a research project (Planeterranea), aiming to identify a healthy dietary pattern based on local foods with the same MD features. The aim of our study is to develop a MD-based food pyramid for Asian populations. Methods: Asia was stratified into six areas according to pedo-climatic conditions. For each region a comprehensive scoping review of local crops and typical foods was conducted on several databases such as the US Department of Agriculture (USDA)'s database, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) website, and PubMed, focusing on both plant-based and animal-based foods. Narrative review was then conducted on the identified foods to determine their nutritional composition and planetary health impact. Finally, the collected information was used to build up the Asian food pyramid with details for each respective region. Results: We proposed a food pyramid for Asian countries, guaranteeing the same nutritional intake and health benefits as MD, by considering dietary habits and typical foods of this population. From the bottom to the top, Asian fruits and vegetables present similar nutritional profile as those in MD. Whole grains (barley) may represent valid alternative to white rice. Sesame oil represents a source of unsaturated fats and an alternative to olive oil. Legumes (soybean), edible insects, mushrooms and algae, guarantee an adequate intake of plant-based proteins with a complete amino-acid profile and a low environmental impact with respect to animal-based ones. Sesamolin, a lignan isolated from sesame oils, has been found to possess neuroprotective, anticancer, and free radical scavenging properties. We hypothesized that sesamolin could stimulate the activity of nuclear factor erythroid-derived 2-like 2 (Nrf2) and inhibit adipocyte differentiation of preadipocytes. The objective of this study was to investigate effects of sesamolin on adipocyte differentiation and its underlying molecular mechanisms. In this study, we determined the effects of treatment with 25 to 100 µM sesamolin on adipogenesis in cell culture systems. Sesamolin inhibited lipid accumulation and suppressed the expression of adipocyte markers during adipocyte differentiation of C3H10T1/2, 3T3-L1, and primary preadipocytes. Mechanism studies revealed that sesamolin increased Nrf2 protein expression without inducing its mRNA, leading to an increase in the expression of Nrf2 target genes such as heme oxygenase 1 and NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase 1 (Nqo1) in C3H10T1/2 adipocytes and mouse embryonic fibroblasts. These effects were significantly attenuated in Nrf2 knockout (KO) mouse embryonic fibroblasts, indicating that effects of sesamolin were dependent on Nrf2. In H1299 human lung cancer cells with KO of Kelch like-ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1), a negative regulator of Nrf2, sesamolin failed to further increase Nrf2 protein expression. However, upon reexpressing Keap1 in Keap1 KO cells, the ability of sesamolin to elevate Nrf2 protein expression was restored, highlighting the crucial role of Keap1 in sesamolin-induced Nrf2 activation. Taken together, these findings show that sesamolin can inhibit adipocyte differentiation through Keap1-mediated Nrf2 activation. • Sesamolin inhibits lipid accumulation during adipocyte differentiation. • Sesamolin inhibits adipocyte markers expression in C3H10T1/2 adipocytes. • Seasmolin enhances Nrf2 protein levels and its target genes expression. • The effects of sesamolin on Nrf2 activation are dependent on Keap1 protein. Objective(s): Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the main causes of infertility in women. This study was conducted to uncover the effects of lupeol as an anti-androgenic triterpene on experimentally-induced PCOS in mice. Materials and Methods: Eighty immature female mice were divided into 4 groups: Control (C), PCOS (P), Lupeol (L), and Flutamide (F). PCOS was induced in test groups by injection of Dehydroepiandrosterone (60 mg/kg/day, IP) for twenty days. Following the PCOS induction, the two groups of L and F were treated with lupeol (40 mg/kg/day) and/or flutamide (10 mg/kg/day) respectively and the two groups of C and P received sesame oil (0.1 ml/mouse/day) for 15 days. After the treatment period, ten animals in each group were selected for collecting blood and ovary samples. In vitro fertilization assessment was carried out on 10 remaining mice in each group. The hormonal assays and oxidative stress biomarker determination were performed on serum and tissue samples. Moreover, histopathological analyses were conducted on the ovaries. Results: PCOS-elevated concentration of LH and Testosterone was significantly (P<0.05) lowered in lupeol and flutamide-received animals. Lupeol and flutamide both reduced PCOS-induced fibrosis and the number of atretic follicles. Both compounds declined the PCOS-increased lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation in serum and the ovaries. Lupeol increased the PCOS-reduced fertility rate and decreased the number of arrested embryos by 12%. Conclusion: These findings indicate that lupeol could be a novel compound in the treatment of PCOS as it reduced PCOS-induced structural and also functional disorders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Succinic acid (SA) is a platform chemical for producing biofuel and other green chemicals. Fermentative SA production is a cost – effective and eco – friendly method, with quite a few downstream challenges. The recovery method of reactive extraction shows promise but faces toxicity issues with the diluent and extractant, especially concerning microorganisms in the fermentation broth. Hence, a non – toxic diluent and extractant, or less toxic combinations, are needed for efficient acid recovery. Hence, non – toxic diluents, groundnut oil and sesame oil, were evaluated. Based on the superior extraction efficiency (E%) achieved with groundnut oil, the study conducted reactive extraction of SA from the aqueous phase using tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) dissolved in groundnut oil. Using response surface methodology with central composite rotatable design, E% was maximized by optimizing independent variables, which were: initial SA concentration– 0.2525 mol L−1, TBP concentration in groundnut oil as the extractant– 50%, shaking time–4 h, pH– 3. These conditions resulted in a distribution coefficient of 0.951 and E% of 48.75%, which are closely aligned with the predicted values of 0.953 and 50.21%, respectively. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy analysis confirmed a 1:1 complex formation in the organic phase. The results provide insights into the efficient recovery of SA from the fermentation broth. Groundnut oil can be used as nontoxic diluent in succinic acid reactive extraction. CCD based RSM can be used to design the reactive extraction system. Titanium alloys are encouraging materials as bone implantations in medical operations due to their interesting performances. However, wear debris engendered by wear was found to be the biggest handicap in terms of implant longevity. On the other hand, the biological environment has been considered to impact the tribological response. In this context, this work investigated the effect of the lubrication on the tribological response of the TiAl6V4/TiAl6V4 couple using a pin-on-disk tribometer. Thus, four various bio-lubricants were used: the physiological solution (NaCl 0.9%), nigella and sesame natural oils and Hyalgan® (sodium hyaluronate) used for the treatment of osteoarthritis (OA). The results displayed an enhancement in the friction and wear behaviors of the TiAl6V4/TiAl6V4 pair in the presence of natural oils. The analyses of the chemical structure of natural oils in terms of the unsaturations number (UN) suggest the existence of a dependency between the oil chemical structure and the wear resistance. The wear mechanism of the titanium alloys is governed by the continuous wear process of the formed and re-formed thin oxide layer on the metallic surface. It is found that the change of wear mechanism with the use of oils is mainly linked to their structure. In fact, natural oils have the ability to generate a dense lubricating layer on the metallic surface which will reduce wear. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The development of functional foods is an area of great interest and innovation in the food industry. The use of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in food formulations has been growing in recent years due to its multiple health benefits. In this study, conjugated linoleic acid was obtained from sesame oil, and its use in the formulation of oil-in-water food emulsions was evaluated. Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) was synthesized from the linoleic acid present in sesame oil using the alkaline isomerization method using proplyeneglycol as a solvent. The effect of alkali concentration (NaOH) and reaction time on the conversion of linoleic acid to CLA was evaluated. A 96.6% conversion of CLA was obtained with a NaOH concentration of 7% and a reaction time of 2 h. Emulsions were prepared using CLA as oil phase and soy lecithin, tween 80, carboxymethylcellulose as emulsifying agents. Emulsions with mixtures of carboxymethylcellulose and tween 80 were stable, presenting a non-Newtonian fluid behavior of pseudoplastic type (n<1). The Ostwald-de-Waele model shows an optimal fit to the experimental data of apparent viscosity (R²>0.99), and its microstructural characterization shows a homogeneous particle distribution. These results show that the alkaline isomerization process using propylene glycol as a solvent is an excellent alternative for the synthesis of CLA from vegetable oils such as sesame oil and its application in the development of microstructured products such as functional emulsions, and their subsequent application in the development of new food products with beneficial health characteristics. Tahini is a globally recognized creamy paste made from sesame seeds, whose seeds are widely produced in Colombia but little used in the production of products. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the quality attributes through proximal, microbiological, and sensory analysis, and the rheological behavior of tahini with the addition of natural sweetener, honey, and cocoa liquor as sensory additives, using local crops. A 2X2X2 factorial design with sesame paste, honey concentration, and cocoa liquor as factors were used to prepare tahini. Proximal, microbiological, and sensory analyses were carried out to determine the bromatology, microbiological suitability, and sensory acceptability, respectively. The rheological behavior was studied by shear rate sweep, controlling the deformation 1x10-2 s-1 to 1x10-2 s-1 with a fit to the Ostwald de Waele model. The rheological characterization of the formulations showed that all of them exhibited pseudoplastic flow behavior, with F4 standing out as having a higher apparent viscosity. Finally, formulation F4 showed the best bromatological, rheological, and sensory characteristics, demonstrating that the incorporation of new ingredients can modify traditional tahini to promote its consumption. Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) is an important oilseed crop with significant economic importance in many developing countries. This study rigorously investigated the impact of various applications and doses of two specific plant growth regulators, paclobutrazol (PAC) and mepiquat chloride (MC), on the development, yield components, oil content, and fatty acid composition of sesame plants across two consecutive growing seasons. The research revealed that while paclobutrazol application increased the plant height it also resulted in a slight decrease in oil content. The paclobutrazol treatment resulted in the highest seed yield (21.3 g/plant), which was significantly different from both the MC (13.1 g/plant) and PAC + MC (14.6 g/plant) treatments. In contrast, the mepiquat chloride treatment resulted in the lowest oil content. The combined application of both regulators showed intermediate effects. In addition, variations in fatty acid content were observed between applications and doses, with significant differences in saturated and unsaturated fatty acid levels. The findings provide valuable insights into the potential benefits and implications of using growth regulators in sesame cultivation, especially in the context of mechanized harvesting and oil quality optimization. Sesame oil has been widely used for centuries. It is not only used as a kitchen ingredient, but it is also used to apply to the skin. Sesame oil contains natural compounds such as sesamol, sesamolin and sesamide, which have the ability to reflect or absorb certain UV rays. These substances can act as UV filters, helping to minimize the effects of harmful UV radiation on the skin. The aim of the study was to investigate the radioprotective/sun protection properties of sesame oil. The influence of sesame oils from different manufacturers on the directional reflectance of the skin was analyzed at various time intervals. To assess the sunscreen properties of the oil, a new technique was used: the 410-Solar hemispherical directional reflectometer. Sesame oil can be used in sunscreen preparations, but only when combined with other, more powerful ingredients. The oil itself is not sufficient protection against solar radiation. Food safety control is a key issue in the food and agriculture industries. For such purposes, developing miniaturized analytical methods is critical for enabling the rapid and sensitive detection of food supplements, allergens, and pollutants. Here, a novel bioanalytical methodology based on DNA-functionalized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and colorimetric detection was developed to detect the presence of sesame (a major allergen) through sesame seed DNA as a target, in food samples. The presence of sesame DNA induces controlled nanoparticle aggregation/desegregation, resulting in a color change (from blue to red) proportional to sesame DNA concentration. The incorporation of multicomponent nucleic acid enzymes (MNAzymes) in this strategy has been carried out to perform an isothermal signal amplification strategy to improve the sensitivity of detection. Also, open-source software for color analysis was used to ensure an unbiased visual color-change detection, enhancing detection accuracy and sensitivity and opening the possibility of performing a simple and decentralized analyte detection. The method successfully detected the presence of sesame DNA in sesame seed, sesame oil, olive oil, and sunflower oil. In brief, the developed approach constitutes a simple and affordable alternative to perform a highly sensitive detection of DNA in food without complex methodologies or the requirement of expensive instrumentation. Background: Obesity is a major public health issue with no definitive treatment. The first-line approach for obesity is lifestyle modification, including a healthy diet. Although the amount of fat has been considered, there is no network meta-analysis (NMA) study investigating the effect of edible oils on body weight. Therefore, we sought to investigate the effect of different edible oils on body weight using a systematic review and NMA study of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Method: PubMed, Scopus, ISI Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library were searched from inception to April 2019. RCTs of different edible oils for body weight were included. A frequentist network meta-analysis was conducted to appraise the efficacy of different types of edible oils, and the Surface Under the Cumulative Ranking Curve (SUCRA) was estimated. The GRADE framework was used to assess the certainty of evidence. Results: Forty-two eligible studies were included. Most of the included trials examined the effect of olive oil compared to canola oil (n = 7 studies), followed by canola oil compared to sunflower oil (n = 6 studies), and olive oil compared to sunflower oil (n = 4 studies). Sesame oil had the highest SUCRA value for reducing weight (SUCRA value = 0.9), followed by the mixture of canola and sesame oil (0.8). Palm oil and soy oil were ranked the lowest (SUCRA value = 0.2). Conclusion: There is low to moderate certainty of evidence showing that soybean, palm, and sunflower oils were associated with weight gain, while sesame oil produced beneficial anti-obesity effects. Erwinia amylovora, the primary cause of fire blight, is thought to be one of the most difficult crop diseases to eradicate. The study aimed to evaluate the performance of essential sesame oil (SO) and silver nanoparticle synthesized by sesame oil SO-AgNPs against E. amylovora. Using GC-MS, it was found that essential sesame oil contains the main component of the oil was sesamin, asarninin, heptane, c-Sitosterol, anethol, and trimethyl -6- ((s) - 4-methylcyclohexan – 3 – en-1-yl)) tetrahydro -2H-pyran. The diluted sesame oil (SO) was used as a reducing agent in synthesis of AgNPs in aqueous solution. By using UV-Visible spectrophotometry (UV–Vis), Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM), and Fourier Transformer InfraRed (FTIR) analysis, the produced Ag NPs were studied. The average particle size of the spherical Ag NPs was determined to be 54.98 nm using data from HRTEM and DLS. SO-Ag NPs (20 µg/ml) showed a promising antibacterial against E. amylovora, producing a 22.9 mm Zone of Inhibition (ZOI) against E. amylovora, followed by SO-Ag NPs (10 ug/ml) that gave 18.2 mm ZOI., compared to gentamicin that produced 13.2 mm ZOI. The most effective inducers were SO-Ag NPs at 10 ug/ml, which decreased the percentage of disease severity by 27.5 and increased the percentage of protection against disease infection by 68.39%. SO-Ag NPs was the most effective inducers which decreased the contents of Malonaldehyde (MDA) and H2O2 by 41.3% and 77.1%. Applying SO-Ag NPs or SO lowered the level of malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and improved the fruit set and yield in infected trees. This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) oil cake on pasta processing and the functional characteristics of the end product. The pasta produced from wheat flour fortified with 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5, and 15% (w/w) sesame oil cake showed a significant increase in total protein (i.e., ranging from 12.3 and 16.0 g/100 g), lipid (i.e., 3-fold) and crude fiber (i.e., 0.58 to 0.91 g/100 g) contents with the increasing addition of sesame oil cake. Consistograph tests showed that the pressure maximum decreased significantly from 267.2 kPa for the wheat flour dough (control) to 157.6 kPa upon the addition of 15% (w/w) sesame oil cake to wheat flour. Drop-in pressure after 250 and 450 s was lower for the control sample than for those containing 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5, and 15% (w/w) sesame oil cake. The elasticity value for the control dough was 500.1 Pa, and it was reduced to 392.3 Pa with the addition of 15% (w/w) sesame oil cake to wheat flour resulting also in a significant reduction in the extensibility. The pasta from the flour blend with 7.5% (w/w) sesame oil cake exhibited the highest cooking loss, at 5.40 g/100 g. Sensorial evaluation of the flavor and stickiness of pasta produced from the flour blends containing up to 10% (w/w) of sesame oil cake was satisfactory and recommended to open the door for industrial utilization of such valuable and nutritious by-products. This study investigates the therapeutic potential of an herbal-based topical cream for treating psoriasis, a chronic inflammatory skin condition that detrimentally affects patients' quality of life. The 8-week longitudinal cohort study evaluated the efficacy of a novel herbal topical cream, formulated with coconut oil, sesame oil, clove oil, mangosteen peel, turmeric rhizome, licorice root, and other plant extracts in 49 patients with psoriasis. Disease severity was quantified using the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) at baseline, and at the 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th weeks. Additional assessments, including the Psoriasis Disability Index (PDI) and Dermatology Life Quality Index 0DLQI) were performed before and after the treatment period. PASI scores were analyzed using the Friedman test for repeated measures and pairwise Wilcoxon signed-rank test at a significance level of 0.05. Results demonstrated significant psoriasis remission, with noticeable efficacy observed by week 4 and sustained improvements throughout the 8-week trial (p<0.05). Likewise, participants reported improved wellbeing, as indicated by reduced PDI and DLQI scores across all aspects. These findings suggest that the formulated herbal cream provides a novel topical therapeutic option for psoriasis, whether as an alternative or adjuvant treatment, enhancing both disease severity and patient quality of life. Therefore, this herbal topical cream represents a viable and safe option for psoriasis management, potentially providing an effective alternative or adjunct to conventional therapies such as steroid creams and coal tar ointments. Summary: Proteins are commonly used ingredients to impart certain non‐nutritional properties to foods. Consequently, the industry is constantly seeking to enhance proteins that provide these attributes to food products. Therefore, the aim of this research was to extract the protein from sesame seeds and evaluate the effect of chemical modification through acylation with lauroyl chloride and acetic anhydride on functional properties (solubility index, emulsifying, foaming, swelling and water‐holding and oil‐holding capacity). Chemical modification was successfully demonstrated using FTIR spectroscopy and X‐rays. It was found that acylation with lauroyl chloride or acetic anhydride altered the physicochemical and functional properties, particularly at pH 10. Both reactions exhibited substitution degrees exceeding 20%. Chemical modification via acylation resulted in significant improvements in water and oil retention capacity, emulsifying activity and foaming activity. Thermal analysis revealed significant changes in the modified samples, altering their denaturation temperature, leading to the conclusion that chemical modifications through acylation with lauroyl chloride or acetic anhydride offer benefits in certain functional properties relevant to the food industry. Summary: In this study, the effects of citric acid‐loaded Hβ zeolite (F), activated clay and their modified decolorizers on the nutrients, volatile compounds and harmful substances of sesame oil in the decolorization process were evaluated. The results showed that the decolorization effect of F was second only to that of activated clay, the yield of F‐treated sesame oil sample was not significantly different from that of other decolorizers. The formation of asarinin was detected only in the sesame oil samples treated with F and H (zinc chloride‐activated clay). Compared with the activated clay‐treated sesame oil samples, the retention of tocopherols in the F‐treated sesame oil sample was significantly increased by 23.11%, and the retention of phytosterols was increased by 4.85%. The removal rate of the harmful substances Norharman and Harman in the F‐treated sesame oil sample was 96.79%, which was second only to that of the activated clay. Additionally, the removal rate of the total volatile compounds was the highest at 69.47%. The effects of different decolorizers on the sesame oil samples were closely related to the specific surface area, pore size and surface acidic sites of these decolorizers. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of dietary sesame oil and ginger oil supplements on the dorsal root ganglia following a sciatic nerve crush model in male Wistar albino rats. Crush injury models have been done by means of graded forceps (50 Newton). The animals were given a daily sesame oil (4 ml/kg/day) and ginger oil (400 mg/kg/day) via oral gavage for a period of 28 days. Dorsal root ganglia from the L5 levels were harvested. Processing of tissues was done for electron microscopy and light microscopy. Immunohistochemical staining with active caspase-3 antibody and qualitative ultrastructural analyses of tissues were made by a light and a transmission electron microscope, respectively. The results showed that crush injury leads to remarkable ultrastructural changes in sensory neurons, such as swollen mitochondria, disruption of cristae structure, glial cell proliferation and, consequently, phagocytosis of the damaged neuron. These ultrastructural changes were less evident in the treated groups, and both natural compounds reduced the expression of activated caspase-3, which may also affect ultrastructural changes. The application of the natural products sesame oil and ginger oil may represent a supportive approach to the protection of sensory neurons against the destructive effects of peripheral nerve crush injury.
