One of the bottlenecks in cultivating juvenile green abalone Haliotis fulgens is the lack of well-adapted natural or formulated food for optimal growth. The goal of this study was to analyse the digestive gland structure of juvenile green abalone fed rehydrated natural feed, Ulva sp. (Chlorophyta), Eisenia arborea, Macrocystis pyrifera, Egregia menziesii (Phaeophyta) and Porphyra perforata (Rhodophyta), using histochemical techniques. Structure of the digestive gland was described, and proteoglycan granules were detected in the digestive cells. The abundance of granules was variable, depending on the feed provided to the abalone, and this was reflected in their growth. Granular content in digestive cells fed Ulva sp. was scarce, leading to low growth rate and high feed conversion ratio (FCR). Digestive cells of juveniles fed E. menziesii led to the best nutritional condition, including many proteoglycans cellular granules, best weight growth rate and a low FCR. Histochemical analysis of the digestive gland, differentiated by a modified Goldner trichrome method that included Alcian blue, was a useful tool for determining the nutritional status of farmed abalone, therefore recommended for assessing adjustments to the natural feed or formulation to meet the nutritional needs of abalone. The feasibility of obtaining a similar growth response from juvenile pink abalone Haliotis corrugata at a research laboratory and a hatchery, when using natural feeds was evaluated. Four macroalgae, Egregia menziesii, Eisenia arborea, Macrocystis pyrifera, Gracilaria sp., and the surfgrass Phyllospadix torreyi were used as feeds. Response patterns of abalone were very similar at both facilities in terms of final length, weight, and survival, varying from 13.0 to 15.50 mm, 0.31 to 0.52 g, and 60.0% to 78.6%, respectively. Better growth was obtained when E. menziesii, M. pyrifera, and Gracilaria sp. were offered. Poor results were obtained with surfgrass. The feed conversion ratio was determined at the laboratory and did not vary significantly, ranging from 42.3 to 199.0; although a significant inverse correlation was observed with growth rate. Growth in length and weight and survival rates varied within 1.6–20.2 μm day−1, 0.123–1.664 mgday−1, 0.4–0.64%day−1, respectively. Mean growth rate in length (14.7μm day−1) and weight (1.18 mg day−1) at the hatchery were significantly higher than that obtained at the laboratory (9.4 μm day−1 and 0.77 mg day−1), which is most likely a consequence of more suitable water temperature at the hatchery. The yield and gel properties of agar from Gelidium robustum, harvested in Baja California for industrial production is affected by seasonof collection and epiphyte loading. The alga is epiphytized to various extents by the bryozoan Membraniphora tuberculata ('conchilla') and the resulting calcareous crust on the alga diminishes the price of the seaweed biomass. Classification of the algal biomass quality by the agar industry is based on the apparent 'conchilla' content from visual examination. The different quality classes can be categorized quantitatively into premium class (30-40% w/w of 'conchilla' load), 2ndclass (? 50% w/w) and 3rd class (> 60% w/w). For samples collected at two exploited beds, the biomass obtained from Bahia de Tortugas hada lower epiphytic coverage than that from Bahia Asuncion. The agar yield from different quality classes of G. robustum was strongly affected by the bryozoan epiph ytic coverage, while its gel characteristics were not. Algae collected at Punta Prieta, an unexploited bed not affected by 'conchilla', showed seasonality in agar yield. It ranged between 17.5 and 44.2% with two maximum values observed, one in summerand the other in winter. Gel strength ranged between 515 and 665 g cm-2, reaching a maximum during autumn. Background: The red macroalga Gracilariaparvispora is an introduced species in the Mexican Pacific. To date, there are no published studies on its sessile epibionts, including the hydrozoans and bryozoans, which are the dominant epibionts on macrophytes and of significant biological and economic interest., New Information: This study provides insight into the faunal diversity of hydroids growing on G.parvispora . A total of 185 thalli from both herbarium specimens and field samples collected from five sites in La Paz Bay were revised. Each thallus size and the presence of hydroid epibionts in each thallus region were registered. Eight different hydrozoan taxa were growing on the red macroalgae, including the first recorded observation of Obeliaoxydentata in the Gulf of California. The sizes of the collected thalli were mostly under 7.0 cm, the maximum number of taxa per thallus was three and the thallus region containing the highest number of epibionts was in the middle. Significant differences were observed amongst the lengths of thalli with and without epibionts. The thalli with epibionts were larger than the thalli without epibionts. Similarly, significant differences were observed amongst the months. The pair-wise test revealed that each month exhibited distinctive epibiont taxa when compared to the others. This study highlights the lack of information on these associations. Further research is needed to understand whether introduced macroalgae can bring non-native epibiont species to an area., (María A. Sea urchin species are ecologically important in the Gulf of California and are becoming popular as a local fishery due to their commercial value. The most abundant species are Echinometra vanbrunti, Eucidaris thouarsii, and Tripneustes depressus. The objective of this study was to evaluate cadmium, lead, copper, zinc, and iron concentrations, as well as stable isotope values in these sea urchin species in the Santa Rosalia mining area (STR), in three sites: Punta Gorda, Punta el Aterrizaje, and Punta Salina. The highest Fe concentration (100.2 mg kg -1 ) was found in E. vanbrunti, while the highest concentrations of Pb (15.1 mg kg -1 ), Cu (14.5 mg kg -1 ), and Zn (347.7 mg kg -1 ) were recorded in E. thouarsii, and the highest Cd concentration (10.8 mg kg -1 ) was found in T. depressus. The main health risk of trace metal pollution in STR may be caused by Cd and Pb. δ 15 N and δ 13 C values were higher in E. thouarsii and T. depressus, respectively; E. thouarsii has the highest trophic position. Specimen size was not related to metal concentrations, but a positive relationship was observed between specimen size and isotopic values in T. depressus. The three species showed different bioaccumulation patterns for the metals analyzed. Acanthophoraspicifera , a red alga considered an alien species, was discovered for the first time on the Pacific coast of Mexico in 2006 from a locality inside La Paz Bay, Gulf of California. Since then, more records have shown its presence, 17 localities having been added up to 2015. A two-year field study (2020-2022) visiting 31 sites along the coast of La Paz Bay, complemented with data from literature and citizen science, resulted in a database of 709 entries that spans the data from 2004 to 2023. These data showed a distribution that goes from Punta Coyote, close to Boca Grande, the northern entrance to the Bay to Playa Tecolote in the south, more than 100 km of coastline, including Espiritu Santo Archipelago, an area considered a natural reserve since 2007. Anthropogenic activity and environmental variables did not present statistical differences that explain A.spicifera spreading. It represents a naturalised alien species without evidence of a negative impact. The brown alga Sargassum provides a natural substrate occupied by hydrozoans in shallow marine waters. A global count in 2007 listed 39 epibiotic species of Hydrozoa growing on Sargassum , but more studies have been published since, therefore, an update is timely, particularly due to the increased abundance of Sargassum in the Caribbean. This review, based on a recent literature survey and new records from Mexico, includes 133 publications of epibiotic hydrozoans on Sargassum spanning 220 years, from 1802 to 2022. A total of 131 hydrozoan species were recorded on 26 species of Sargassum , most belonging to the subclass Hydroidolina (130), with only one record of a trachyline medusa ( Gonionemus vertens , subclass Trachylinae). Most publications centered on the Tropical Atlantic, where the greatest number of hydrozoan species (67 species) were recorded. All hydrozoan species possess a hydrorhiza, except one hydromedusae species that attach to Sargassum via adhesive tentacles. Most of the hydrozoan species associated with Sargassum exhibited a benthic life cycle (93 species) and are comprised of erect, branched colonies (67 species) and large hydrothecae (69 species). Although the number of studies of epibiotic hydrozoans on Sargassum has increased since the mid-20th century, nevertheless hydrozoan richness has not reached an asymptote. Since 2014, the Mexican Caribbean beaches have received massive influxes of the brown seaweed Sargassum (S. fluitans III, S. natans I and S. natans VIII), causing serious ecological and economic effects. Concentrations of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) were determined over an annual cycle in pelagic Sargassum species from massive influxes into the Mexican Caribbean. The contribution of trace elements, polysaccharides (alginate and fucoidans), and their main functional groups (uronic acids and sulfate) to arsenic content in Sargassum fluitans - the most abundant species in the Sargassum influx - is discussed. Arsenic was recorded in all samples, yielding mean concentrations of 74.2 ± 2.84 mg kg -1 . Significant differences were found between species for As, Cu, Fe, and Pb, but not for Cd and Zn; also, S. fluitans showed significant differences in metal content between seasons for all elements, as well as in alginate and uronic acids from fucoidan. The season of the year, copper, iron, uronic acids, and sulfate content in fucoidan were the main variables associated with arsenic accumulation in S. fluitans as evidenced with a Generalized Linear Model. In the last decade, unprecedented arrivals of pelagic Sargassum (Sargassum influx) have been reported for the Caribbean coasts causing severe ecological and economical affectations and remarking the necessity to characterize the phenomenon. In the north coast of the Mexican Caribbean, spatial characterization of Sargassum influx was performed in terms of its abundance, species composition and chemical content using a combination of in situ sampling and remote sensing evaluations. Sargassum influx was detected within the 25 km fringe near to Quintana Roo coast in coincidence with beach-cast events during September 2018. Significant spatial variation in abundance and species composition of the stranded biomass was found for the six localities studied, which was related to the local environmental conditions. Pelagic species of Sargassum were the main component ranging from 78.1 to 99.6% of the total beach-cast (wrack) fresh biomass, whereas benthic macrophytes (seagrasses and macroalgae) were a minor component reaching up to 21% in some localities. The biochemical composition of beach-cast Sargassum resulted spatially homogeneous for most of the components analyzed; only carbon tissue content, ash metals (particularly Fe and As) and isotopic composition changed spatially. This study represents baseline information for the region. In the Gulf of California; mineral deposits have contributed to high metal contents in coastal environments. This study examined cadmium; lead; copper; zinc; and iron contents in three fish species; Kyphosus vaigiensis (herbivore), Stegastes rectifraenum (omnivore), and Balistes polylepis (carnivore) at two mining sites. Metal concentrations were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry and stable nitrogen and carbon isotopes were estimated using mass spectrophotometry. Also, we assessed the risk to human health from the consumption of these three species based on permissible limits; although only two of them ( Kyphosus and Balistes ) are consumed as food. Metal concentrations differed among fish species; except for iron. The highest concentrations of metals were not always recorded in the species at the highest trophic level; i.e., Balistes . The highest concentrations (dry weight) recorded were cadmium (0.21 ± 0.03 µg g -1 ) and lead (1.67 ± 0.26 µg g -1 ), in S. rectifraenum ; copper (1.60 ± 0.49 µg g -1 ) and zinc (67.30 ± 8.79 µg g -1 ), in B. polylepis ; and iron (27.06 ± 2.58 µg g -1 ), in K. vaigiensis . Our findings show that each element accumulates differently in particular marine organisms; depending on the physiology of the species and the biogeochemistry of its habitat; which in turn is affected by the anthropogenic activities in adjacent areas. No risk of heavy metals toxicity is expected from the human consumption of the species and sites studied.

Massive accumulations of pelagic species of Sargassum have generated recent social, economic and ecological problems along Caribbean shores. In the Mexican Caribbean, these events have prompted the study of diverse biological and ecological aspects of these macroalgae. However, studies on their associated biota, including Hydrozoa, remain scarce. This research provides important species observations in an area where data is lacking. The occurrence and percent cover of hydroids on Sargassum thalli collected on the beach at Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo, Mexico from April 2018 to March 2019 was studied. Three pelagic species and morphotypes of Sargassum from this area were analyzed: Sargassum fluitans III, S. natans I and S. natans VIII, as well as a benthic species, S. polyceratium var. ovatum . A total of 14 taxa of hydroids, belonging to the superorders "Anthoathecata" and Leptothecata, were identified. In our study, more hydroid taxa were observed on axes of the different species of Sargassum than on leaves or aerocysts. In general, the greatest species richness of hydroids was observed from February to April. Results show that live hydrozoans attached to pelagic Sargassum are transported into the area. Enzymes responsible for the digestion of food protein by juvenile green abalone (Haliotis fulgens) were studied when fed algae or a sea grass (Phyllospadix torreyi) naturally occurring in the habitat. The effect of food on the composition and activity of the enzymes was also evaluated. Acid, serine proteinases and aminopeptidases, as confirmed by pH profile of activity, specific inhibition and synthetic substrate hydrolysis were found in the digestive organs of juvenile green abalone. Algae and sea grass differentially affected the digestive system in abalone.
