Abstract

The role of the cosmic web in shaping galaxy properties is investigated in the GAMA spectroscopic survey in the redshift range $0.03 \leq z \leq 0.25$. The stellar mass, $u - r$ dust corrected colour and specific star formation rate (sSFR) of galaxies are analysed as a function of their distances to the 3D cosmic web features, such as nodes, filaments and walls, as reconstructed by DisPerSE. Significant mass and type/colour gradients are found for the whole population, with more massive and/or passive galaxies being located closer to the filament and wall than their less massive and/or star-forming counterparts. Mass segregation persists among the star-forming population alone. The red fraction of galaxies increases when closing in on nodes, and on filaments regardless of the distance to nodes. Similarly, the star-forming population reddens (or lowers its sSFR) at fixed mass when closing in on filament, implying that some quenching takes place. Comparable trends are also found in the state-of-the-art hydrodynamical simulation Horizon-AGN. These results suggest that on top of stellar mass and large-scale density, the traceless component of the tides from the anisotropic large-scale environment also shapes galactic properties. An extension of excursion theory accounting for filamentary tides provides a qualitative explanation in terms of anisotropic assembly bias: at a given mass, the accretion rate varies with the orientation and distance to filaments. In particular, when ICT data contain spatial information, they represent an invaluable new source for analyzing urban phenomena. Here, we present a stability analysis of higher-level information extracted from mobile phone metadata passively produced during an entire year by 9 million individuals in Senegal. We focus on two specific information-retrieval tasks: (a) the identification of land use in the region of Dakar by analyzing the temporal rhythms of the communication activity; (b) the identification of home and work locations of anonymized individuals, allowing for the construction of the Origin-Destination (OD) matrices for commuting flows. Our analysis reveals that the spatial distributions of land use computed for different samples are remarkably robust, with on average 80% of shared surface area between the different spatial partitions. The OD matrix is less stable with a share of about 70% of commuters in common when considering all types of flows. Better results can be obtained at larger levels of aggregation. These different results confirm that ICT data are mostly a very useful source for the spatial analysis of urban systems, but that their reliability should be tested more thoroughly.

Abstract

We develop in this paper the principles of an associative algebraic approach to bulk logarithmic conformal field theories (LCFTs). We concentrate on the closed $gl(1|1)$ spin-chain and its continuum limit - the $c=-2$ symplectic fermions theory - and rely on two technical companion papers, "Continuum limit and symmetries of the periodic gl(1|1) spin chain" [Nucl. Phys. B 871 (2013) 245-288] and "Bimodule structure in the periodic gl(1|1) spin chain" [Nucl. Phys. B 871 (2013) 289-329]. Our main result is that the algebra of local Hamiltonians, the Jones-Temperley-Lieb algebra JTL_N, goes over in the continuum limit to a bigger algebra than the product of the left and right Virasoro algebras. This algebra, S - which we call interchiral, mixes the left and right moving sectors, and is generated, in the symplectic fermions case, by the additional field $S(z,\bar{z})=S_{ab}\psi^a(z)\bar{\psi}^b(\bar{z})$, with a symmetric form $S_{ab}$ and conformal weights (1,1). We discuss in details how the Hilbert space of the LCFT decomposes onto representations of this algebra, and how this decomposition is related with properties of the finite spin-chain. We show that there is a complete correspondence between algebraic properties of finite periodic spin chains and the continuum limit. An important technical aspect of our analysis involves the fundamental new observation that the action of JTL_N in the $gl(1|1)$ spin chain is in fact isomorphic to an enveloping algebra of a certain Lie algebra, itself a non semi-simple version of $sp(N-2)$. The semi-simple part of JTL_N is represented by $Usp(N-2)$, providing a beautiful example of a classical Howe duality, for which we have a non semi-simple version in the full JTL image represented in the spin-chain. Abstract

A mechanism for fusion hindrance is clarified, based on the observation that the sticking configuration of projectile and target is located outside of the conditional saddle point. Accordingly, the fusion process is described by two sequential steps of passing over the Coulomb barrier and shape evolution toward the spherical compound nucleus. The latter one is indispensable in massive systems. With the use of a two-step model, excitation functions of fusion reaction are calculated for various combinations of projectiles and targets which lead to superheavy elements. The hindered fusion excitation measured is reproduced precisely without any adjustable parameter. Combined with survival probabilities calculated by the statistical theory of decay, excitation functions for residues of superheavy elements are calculated to compare with the systematic data measured for the cold fusion path. The peak positions and the widths are correctly reproduced, though it is necessary to reduce the shell correction energies of the compound nuclei predicted by the structure calculations in order to reproduce their absolute values. Predictions are made for a few unknown heavier elements. Furthermore, a preliminary attempt toward the shell closure N = 184 is also presented using a neutron-rich secondary beam.

Abstract

International audience; The rotation effects on centrifugally driven instabilities in curved channel flow with a finite gap are investigated. An inviscid criterion of stability is formulated to explain the behavior of the flow when rotation and curvature effects compete to either stabilize or destabilize the flow. The stability of curved Poiseuille flow with finite gap size is studied, and it is shown that the asymmetry between the directions of rotation is enhanced when the gap size increases.

Abstract

Assuming the existence of a primordial asymmetry in the dark sector, a scenario usually dubbed Asymmetric Dark Matter (aDM), we study the effect of oscillations between dark matter and its antiparticle on the re-equilibration of the initial asymmetry before freeze-out, which enable efficient annihilations to recouple. We calculate the evolution of the DM relic abundance and show how oscillations re-open the parameter space of aDM models, in particular in the direction of allowing large (WIMP-scale) DM masses. A typical wimp with a mass at the EW scale (\sim 100 GeV - 1 TeV) presenting a primordial asymmetry of the same order as the baryon asymmetry naturally gets the correct relic abundance if the DM-number-violating Delta(DM) = 2 mass term is in the \sim meV range. The re-establishment of annihilations implies that constraints from the accumulation of aDM in astrophysical bodies are evaded. Abstract

Following the selection of The Gravitational Universe by ESA, and the successful flight of LISA Pathfinder, the LISA Consortium now proposes a 4 year mission in response to ESA's call for missions for L3. The observatory will be based on three arms with six active laser links, between three identical spacecraft in a triangular formation separated by 2.5 million km. LISA is an all-sky monitor and will offer a wide view of a dynamic cosmos using Gravitational Waves as new and unique messengers to unveil The Gravitational Universe. It provides the closest ever view of the infant Universe at TeV energy scales, has known sources in the form of verification binaries in the Milky Way, and can probe the entire Universe, from its smallest scales near the horizons of black holes, all the way to cosmological scales. The LISA mission will scan the entire sky as it follows behind the Earth in its orbit, obtaining both polarisations of the Gravitational Waves simultaneously, and will measure source parameters with astrophysically relevant sensitivity in a band from below $10^{-4}\,$Hz to above $10^{-1}\,$Hz., Submitted to ESA on January 13th in response to the call for missions for the L3 slot in the Cosmic Vision Programme

Abstract

We analyze numerically the training dynamics of deep neural networks (DNN) by using methods developed in statistical physics of glassy systems. The two main issues we address are (1) the complexity of the loss landscape and of the dynamics within it, and (2) to what extent DNNs share similarities with glassy systems. Our findings, obtained for different architectures and datasets, suggest that during the training process the dynamics slows down because of an increasingly large number of flat directions. At large times, when the loss is approaching zero, the system diffuses at the bottom of the landscape. Despite some similarities with the dynamics of mean-field glassy systems, in particular, the absence of barrier crossing, we find distinctive dynamical behaviors in the two cases, showing that the statistical properties of the corresponding loss and energy landscapes are different. In contrast, when the network is under-parametrized we observe a typical glassy behavior, thus suggesting the existence of different phases depending on whether the network is under-parametrized or over-parametrized., 10 pages, 5 figures. Abstract

We investigate the phase diagram of QCD with heavy quarks at finite temperature and chemical potential in the context of background field methods. In particular, we use a massive extension of the Landau-DeWitt gauge which is motivated by previous studies of the deconfinement phase transition in pure Yang-Mills theories. We show that a simple one-loop calculation is able to capture the richness of the phase diagram in the heavy quark region, both at real and imaginary chemical potential. Moreover, dimensionless ratios of quantities directly measurable in numerical simulations are in good agreement with lattice results., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, published version (minor corrections)

Abstract

A thermal turbulent Taylor-Couette facility has been designed to investigate turbulent flows generated by differential rotation and radial temperature gradient. It consists of a cylindrical annulus with a rotating inner cylinder and a fixed outer cylinder. The electric heating system is installed inside the inner cylinder, and the annulus is immersed in a large cylindrical container filled with cooling fluid. Temperature regulators independently control the temperature of the inner surface of the inner cylinder and that of the cooling fluid. The facility allows us to reach values of the Reynolds number (Re ∼ 5 × 105) and of the Rayleigh number (Ra ∼ 3 × 106) for water as the working fluid. The facility provides torque measurements, a full optical access at the side and from the bottom for velocity measurements using particle image velocimetry (2D, stereoscopic, and tomographic). Temperature measurements in the flow can be performed by thermochromic liquid crystals or laser induced fluorescence.

Abstract

International audience; The terrigenous sedimentary budget of passive margins, records variations in past sedimentary fluxes, and thus can be used to infer past variations of Earth surface deformation processes or climate change. Accurate estimates of sediment fluxes over various times and spatial scales are therefore crucial. Traditionally, offshore sediment volume determination only considers siliciclastic accumulation, the carbonate fraction (i.e., CaCO 3) being considered only as in situ production. Here we propose a new geochemical methodology to decipher and quantify the number of detrital carbonates in comparison to in situ produced biogenic carbonates. This isotopic approach enables considering the export of detrital carbonates and investigating its effect on sediment budgets. This study, located in the Gulf of Lion, is based on a 300 m long sediment borehole located near the shelf break and covering the last 500 000 years (i.e., five glacial-interglacial periods). Strontium isotope (87 Sr/ 86 Sr) of carbonate fractions (0.70809 to 0.70858) are significantly less radiogenic than modern seawater (i.e., 0.7092) and show fluctuations in agreement with stratigraphic and climatic variations. These results suggest an unsuspected high export of detrital carbonates from the catchment area during both glacial (between 55 and 85% of the sedimentary carbonate fraction) and interglacial (between 30 and 50%) conditions. Thus, not only do detrital carbonate fluxes need to be factored into sediment flux calculations, but these results also suggest that detrital carbonate components could potentially have a strong influence on bulk carbonate 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ratios when not obtained from micro drilled biogenic carbonates, such as the entirety of the Precambrian Sr chemostratigraphic record.

Abstract

Although good progress was made by two international benchmark exercises on in-plane permeability, existing methods have not yet been standardized. This paper presents the results of a third benchmark exercise using in-plane permeability measurement, based on systems applying the radial unsaturated injection method. 19 participants using 20 systems characterized a non-crimp and a woven fabric at three different fiber volume contents, using a commercially available silicone oil as impregnating fluid. They followed a detailed characterization procedure and also completed a questionnaire on their set-up and analysis methods. Excluding outliers (2 of 20), the average coefficient of variation (c v ) between the participant´s results was 32% and 44% (non-crimp and woven fabric), while the average c v for individual participants was 8% and 12%, respectively. This indicates statistically significant variations between the measurement systems. Abstract

We introduce and study a class of models of free fermions hopping between neighbouring sites with random Brownian amplitudes. These simple models describe stochastic, diffusive, quantum, unitary dynamics. We focus on periodic boundary conditions and derive the complete stationary distribution of the system. It is proven that the generating function of the latter is provided by the Harish-Chandra-Itzykson-Zuber integral which allows us to access all fluctuations of the system state. The steady state is characterized by non trivial correlations which have a topological nature. Diagrammatic tools appropriate for the study of these correlations are presented. In the thermodynamic large system size limit, the system approaches a non random equilibrium state plus occupancy and coherence fluctuations of magnitude scaling proportionally with the inverse of the square root of the volume. The large deviation function for those fluctuations is determined. Abstract

International audience; We inspect the influence of the spacing on the resonance of a periodic arrangement of Helmholtz resonators. An effective problem is used which captures accurately the properties of the resonant array within a large range of frequency, and whose simplified version leaves us with an impedance condition. It is shown that the strength of the resonance is enhanced when the array becomes sparser. This degree of freedom on the radiative damping is of particular interest since it does not affect the resonance frequency nor the damping due to losses within each resonator; besides, it does not affect the total thickness of the array. We show that it can be used for the design of a perfect absorbing walls.

Abstract

International audience; In the present study, we investigate different surface pretreatments and their influence on a subsequent surface metallization. A direct liquid injection metalorganic CVD (DLI-MOCVD) process is presented for the low temperature metallization of composites, ultimately aiming at the surface unctionalization of 3D parts. The process involves the organometallic precursor Cu(I) hexafluoroacetylacetonate 2-methyl-1-hexene-3-yne (hfac)Cu(MHY). We determine chemical kinetics of the global deposition reaction and show the improvement of the adhesion of the Cu films by applying surface pretreatments that etch and/or activate the surface before deposition. To this purpose, gas phase and wet chemical processes are used. Gas phase pretreatments consist either in the use of a remote microwave plasma, an in situ UV oxidation, or in the deposition of acrylic acid/ethylene plasma buffer layer by using an atmospheric pressure cold plasma jet. The liquid phase pretreatment is based on a commercial series of solutions that includes swelling, oxidation, and neutralization steps. The adhesive strength of the Cu films on poly-epoxy and on carbon fiber/poly-epoxy composite surfaces is specifically investigated by scratch and cross-cut testing, and is correlatedwith topographical, chemical, and energetic characteristics of the surfaces prior deposition, investigated by interferometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and wettability measurements through the sessile drop method. Pretreatments result in surface functionalization and topographical changes which significantly increase the surface energy and improve the wettability. In some cases the induced modification of the microstructure of the Cu films is found to be eneficial to the electrical resistivity.

Abstract

We discuss the dynamics of parton cascades that develop in dense QCD matter, and contrast their properties with those of similar cascades of gluon radiation in vacuum. We argue that such cascades belong to two distinct classes that are characterized respectively by an increasing or a constant (or decreasing) branching rate along the cascade. In the former class, of which the BDMPS, medium-induced, cascade constitutes a typical example, it takes a finite time to transport a finite amount of energy to very soft quanta, while this time is essentially infinite in the latter case, to which the DGLAP cascade belongs. The medium induced cascade is accompanied by a constant flow of energy towards arbitrary soft modes, leading eventually to the accumulation of the initial energy of the leading particle at zero energy. It also exhibits scaling properties akin to wave turbulence. These properties do not show up in the cascade that develops in vacuum. There, the energy accumulates in the spectrum at smaller and smaller energy as the cascade develops, but the energy never flows all the way down to zero energy. Our analysis suggests that the way the energy is shared among the offsprings of a splitting gluon has little impact on the qualitative properties of the cascades, provided the kernel that governs the splittings is not too singular., Comment: 46 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

The Luttinger-Ward functional (LWF) has been a starting point for conserving approximations in many-body physics for 50 years. The recent discoveries of its multivaluedness and the associated divergence of the two-particle irreducible vertex function $\Gamma$ have revealed an inherent limitation of this approach. Here we demonstrate how these undesirable properties of the LWF can lead to a failure of computational methods based on an approximation of the LWF. We apply the Nested Cluster Scheme (NCS) to the Hubbard model and observe the existence of an additional stationary point of the self-consistent equations, associated with an unphysical branch of the LWF. In the strongly correlated regime, starting with the first divergence of $\Gamma$, this unphysical stationary point becomes attractive in the standard iterative technique used to solve DMFT. Abstract

We address and solve a puzzle raised by a recent calculation [1] of the cross-section for particle production in proton-nucleus collisions to next-to-leading order: the numerical results show an un- reasonably large dependence upon the choice of a prescription for the QCD running coupling, which spoils the predictive power of the calculation. Specifically, the results obtained with a prescription formulated in the transverse coordinate space differ by one to two orders of magnitude from those obtained with a prescription in momentum space. We show that this discrepancy is an artefact of the interplay between the asymptotic freedom of QCD and the Fourier transform from coordinate space to momentum space. When used in coordinate space, the running coupling can act as a fictitious potential which mimics hard scattering and thus introduces a spurious contribution to the cross-section. We identify a new coordinate-space prescription which avoids this problem and leads to results consistent with those obtained with the momentum-space prescription., 28 pages, 9 figures, 2 appendices

Abstract

Anomalous microwave emission (AME) is believed to be due to electric dipole radiation from small spinning dust grains. The aim of this paper is a statistical study of the basic properties of AME regions and the environment in which they emit. We used WMAP and Planck maps, combined with ancillary radio and IR data, to construct a sample of 98 candidate AME sources, assembling SEDs for each source using aperture photometry on 1deg-smoothed maps from 0.408 GHz up to 3000 GHz. Each spectrum is fitted with a simple model of free-free, synchrotron (where necessary), cosmic microwave background (CMB), thermal dust, and spinning dust components. We find that 42 of the 98 sources have significant (>5sigma) excess emission at frequencies between 20 and 60 GHz. An analysis of the potential contribution of optically thick free-free emission from ultra-compact HII regions, using IR colour criteria, reduces the significant AME sample to 27 regions. The spectrum of the AME is consistent with model spectra of spinning dust. The AME regions tend to be more spatially extended than regions with little or no AME. The AME intensity is strongly correlated with the submillimetre/IR flux densities and comparable to previous AME detections in the literature. AME emissivity, defined as the ratio of AME to dust optical depth, varies by an order of magnitude for the AME regions. The AME regions tend to be associated with cooler dust in the range 14-20 K and an average emissivity index of +1.8, while the non-AME regions are typically warmer, at 20-27 K. In agreement with previous studies, the AME emissivity appears to decrease with increasing column density. The emerging picture is that the bulk of the AME is coming from the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and small dust grains from the colder neutral interstellar medium phase (Abridged).

Abstract

GalICS 2.0 is a new semianalytic code to model the formation and evolution of galaxies in a cosmological context. N-body simulations based on a Planck cosmology are used to construct halo merger trees, track subhaloes, compute spins and measure concentrations. The accretion of gas onto galaxies and the morphological evolution of galaxies are modelled with prescriptions derived from hydrodynamic simulations. Star formation and stellar feedback are described with phenomenological models (as in other semianalytic codes). GalICS 2.0 computes rotation speeds from the gravitational potential of the dark matter, the disc and the central bulge. As the rotation speed depends not only on the virial velocity but also on the ratio of baryons to dark matter within a galaxy, our calculation predicts a different Tully-Fisher relation from models in which the rotation speed is proportional to the virial velocity. This is why GalICS 2.0 is able to reproduce the galaxy stellar mass function and the Tully-Fisher relation simultaneously. Our results are also in agreement with halo masses from weak lensing and satellite kinematics, gas fractions, the relation between star formation rate (SFR) and stellar mass, the evolution of the cosmic SFR density, bulge-to-disc ratios, disc sizes and the Faber-Jackson relation., 31 pages, 19 figures, 1 table, submitted to MNRAS

Abstract

International audience; For many practitioners, longevity of full glass ceramic crowns in the posterior area, molars and premolars, remains a real challenge. The purpose of this article is to identify and evaluate the parameters that can significantly influence their resistance when preparing a tooth. The analysis proposed in this article relies on interrelated studies conducted at three levels: in vitro (mechanical tests), in silico (finite elements simulations) and in vivo (clinical survival rates). The in vitro and the in silico studies proved that an appropriate variation of the geometric design of the preparations enables to increase up to 80% the mechanical strength of ceramic reconstructions. The in vivo clinical study of CAD/CAM full ceramic crowns was performed in accordance with the principles stated within the in vitro and the in silico studies and provided a 98.97% success rate over a 6 years period. The variations of geometric design parameters for dental preparation allows for reconstructions with a mechanical breaking up to 80% higher than that of a non-appropriate combination. Abstract

International audience; We propose a novel stochastic method to generate Brownian paths conditioned to start at an initial point and end at a given final point during a fixed time t f under a given potential U (x). These paths are sampled with a probability given by the overdamped Langevin dynamics. We show that these paths can be exactly generated by a local Stochastic Partial Differential Equation (SPDE). This equation cannot be solved in general but we present several approximations that are valid either in the low temperature regime or in the presence of barrier crossing. We show that this method warrants the generation of statistically independent transition paths. It is computationally very efficient. We illustrate the method first on two simple potentials, the two dimensional Mueller potential as well as on the Mexican hat potential, and then on the multi-dimensional problem of conformational transitions in proteins using the "Mixed Elastic Network Model" as a benchmark.

Abstract

International audience; We review recent progress on Horn's problem, which asks for a description of the possible eigenspectra of the sum of two matrices with known eigenvalues. After revisiting the classical case, we consider several generalizations in which the space of matrices under study carries an action of a compact Lie group, and the goal is to describe an associated probability measure on the space of orbits. We review some recent results about the problem of computing the probability density via orbital integrals and about the locus of singularities of the density. We discuss some relations with representation theory, combinatorics, pictographs and symmetric polynomials, and we also include some novel remarks in connection with Schur's problem.

Abstract

This thesis deals with several problems of scattering theory in the semi-classical limit, that is to say, with properties of the generalised eigenfunctions of a Schrödinger operator at high frequencies. The generalised eigenfunctions of a Schrödinger operator on the Euclidean space, with a compactly supported smooth potential, may always be written as the sum of an incoming wave and an outgoing wave, plus a term which is negligible at infinity. The scattering matrix relates the incoming part with the outgoing part. The first part of this work deals with the spectrum of the scattering matrix. We show an equidistribution result for the eigenvalues of the scattering matrix, under the hypothesis that the sets of fixed points of some maps defined from the classical dynamics has measure zero. This result was previously known under the additional assumption that the classical dynamics has an empty trapped set.A second part of this work deals with the distorted plane waves, which are a particular family of generalized eigenfunctions of a Schrödinger operator, which can be written as the sum of a plane wave and a purely outgoing part. We make the hypothesis that the underlying classical dynamics has a hyperbolic trapped set, and that a certain topological pressure is negative. Under these assumptions, we obtain in the semiclassical limit a precise description of distorted plane waves as a convergent sum of Lagrangian states. In particular, we can deduce from this the semiclassical measure associated to distorted plane waves. If we furthermore assume that the manifold has non-positive curvature, and that the potential is zero, these Lagrangian states project on the base manifold without caustics. We deduce from this results on the C^l norms and on the nodal sets of distorted plane waves. We also obtain a lower bound on the number of nodal domains of the sum of two distorted plane waves with close enough incoming directions , for a small generic perturbation of a metric of negative curvature satisfying the topological pressure assumption.; Cette thèse traite de plusieurs problèmes de théorie de la diffusion dans la limite semi-classique, c’est à dire des propriétés des fonctions propres généralisées d’un opérateur de Schrödinger à haute fréquence. Les fonctions propres généralisées d’un opérateur de Schrödinger sur l’espace euclidien, pour un potentiel lisse à support compact, peuvent toujours se décomposer comme la somme d’une partie entrante et d’une partie sortante, plus un terme négligeable à l’infini. La matrice de diffusion relie alors la partie entrante et la partie sortante de la fonction propre. Une première partie de ce travail concerne le spectre de la matrice de diffusion. On montre un résultat d’équidistribution des valeurs propres de la matrice de diffusion, sous l’hypothèse sans doute générique que les ensembles de points fixes de certaines applications définies à partir de la dynamique classique sont de mesure de Lebesgue nulle. Ce résultat était connu précédemment, sous l’hypothèse additionnelle que la dynamique classique est sans ensemble capté.Une seconde partie du travail concerne les ondes planes tordues, qui sont une famille particulière de fonctions propres généralisées d’un opérateur de Schrödinger, pouvant s'écrire comme la somme d'une onde plane et d'une partie purement sortante. Nous faisons l’hypothèse que la dynamique classique sous-jacente possède un ensemble capté hyperbolique, et qu’une certaine pression topologique est négative. Sous ces hypothèses, on obtient dans la limite semi-classique une description précise des ondes planes tordues comme une somme convergente d’états lagrangiens. On peut en particulier en déduire la mesure semi-classique associée aux ondes planes tordues. Si la variété est de courbure négative, et que le potentiel est nul, ces états lagrangiens sont associés à des lagrangiennes se projetant sans caustiques sur la variété de base. On peut alors en déduire des résultats sur les normes C^l et les ensembles nodaux des ondes planes tordues. Nous obtenons aussiune borne inférieure sur le nombre de domaine nodaux de la somme de deux ondes planes tordues de directions incidentes proches, pour une petite perturbation générique d’une métrique de courbure négative vérifiant la condition de pression topologique.

Abstract

We present the XXL Survey, the largest XMM programme totaling some 6.9 Ms to date and involving an international consortium of roughly 100 members. The XXL Survey covers two extragalactic areas of 25 deg2 each at a point-source sensitivity of ~ 5E-15 erg/sec/cm2 in the [0.5-2] keV band (completeness limit). The survey's main goals are to provide constraints on the dark energy equation of state from the space-time distribution of clusters of galaxies and to serve as a pathfinder for future, wide-area X-ray missions. We review science objectives, including cluster studies, AGN evolution, and large-scale structure, that are being conducted with the support of approximately 30 follow-up programmes. We describe the 542 XMM observations along with the associated multi-lambda and numerical simulation programmes. We give a detailed account of the X-ray processing steps and describe innovative tools being developed for the cosmological analysis. The paper provides a thorough evaluation of the X-ray data, including quality controls, photon statistics, exposure and background maps, and sky coverage. Source catalogue construction and multi-lambda associations are briefly described. This material will be the basis for the calculation of the cluster and AGN selection functions, critical elements of the cosmological and science analyses. The XXL multi-lambda data set will have a unique lasting legacy value for cosmological and extragalactic studies and will serve as a calibration resource for future dark energy studies with clusters and other X-ray selected sources. With the present article, we release the XMM XXL photon and smoothed images along with the corresponding exposure maps. The XMM XXL observation list (Table B.1) is available in electronic form at the CDS. Abstract

Context. The XXL Survey is the largest survey carried out by the XMM-Newton satellite and covers a total area of 50 square degrees distributed over two fields. It primarily aims at investigating the large-scale structures of the Universe using the distribution of galaxy clusters and active galactic nuclei as tracers of the matter distribution. Aims. This article presents the XXL bright cluster sample, a subsample of 100 galaxy clusters selected from the full XXL catalogue by setting a lower limit of $3\times 10^{-14}\,\mathrm{erg \,s^{-1}cm^{-2}}$ on the source flux within a 1$^{\prime}$ aperture. Methods. The selection function was estimated using a mixture of Monte Carlo simulations and analytical recipes that closely reproduce the source selection process. An extensive spectroscopic follow-up provided redshifts for 97 of the 100 clusters. We derived accurate X-ray parameters for all the sources. Scaling relations were self-consistently derived from the same sample in other publications of the series. On this basis, we study the number density, luminosity function, and spatial distribution of the sample. Results. The bright cluster sample consists of systems with masses between $M_{500}=7\times 10^{13}$ and $3\times 10^{14} M_\odot$, mostly located between $z=0.1$ and 0.5. The observed sky density of clusters is slightly below the predictions from the WMAP9 model, and significantly below the predictions from the Planck 2015 cosmology. In general, within the current uncertainties of the cluster mass calibration, models with higher values of $\sigma_8$ and/or $\Omega_m$ appear more difficult to accommodate. We provide tight constraints on the cluster differential luminosity function and find no hint of evolution out to $z\sim1$. We also find strong evidence for the presence of large-scale structures in the XXL bright cluster sample and identify five new superclusters., Comment: Accepted by A&A, 25 pages, 17 figures, 7 tables. Abstract

The iterative methods to diagonalize matrices and many-body Hamiltonians can be reformulated as flows of Hamiltonians towards diagonalization driven by unitary transformations that preserve the spectrum. After a comparative overview of the various types of discrete flows (Jacobi, QR-algorithm) and differential flows (Toda, Wegner, White) that have been introduced in the past, we focus on the random XXZ chain with random fields in order to determine the best closed flow within a given subspace of running Hamiltonians. For the special case of the free-fermion random XX chain with random fields, the flow coincides with the Toda differential flow for tridiagonal matrices which is related to the classical integrable Toda chain and which can be seen as the continuous analog of the discrete QR-algorithm. For the random XXZ chain with random fields that displays a Many-Body-Localization transition, the present differential flow should be an interesting alternative to compare with the discrete flow that has been proposed recently to study the Many-Body-Localization properties in a model of interacting fermions (L. Abstract

The present contribution reports the first systematic finite-nucleus calculations performed using the Energy Density Functional method and a non-empirical pairing functional derived from low-momentum interactions. As a first step, the effects of Coulomb and the three-body force are omitted while only the bare two-nucleon interaction at lowest order is considered. To cope with the finite-range and non-locality of the bare nuclear interaction, the 1S0 channel of Vlowk is mapped onto a convenient operator form. For the first time, neutron-neutron and proton-proton pairing correlations generated in finite nuclei by the direct term of the two-nucleon interaction are characterized in a systematic manner. Eventually, such predictions are compared to those obtained from empirical local functionals derived from density-dependent zero range interactions. We compute the pressure of hot quantum electrodynamics from the two-loop truncation of the 2PI effective action. Since the 2PI resummation guarantees gauge-fixing independence only up to the order of the truncation, our result for the pressure presents a gauge dependent contribution of O(e^4). We numerically characterize the credibility of this gauge-dependent calculation and find that the uncertainty due to gauge parameter dependence is under control for xi, 15 latex pages with 3 figures

Abstract

We review recent theoretical developments in the study of the structure of jets that are produced in ultra relativistic heavy ion collisions. The core of the review focusses on the dynamics of the parton cascade that is induced by the interactions of a fast parton crossing a quark-gluon plasma. We recall the basic mechanisms responsible for medium induced radiation, underline the rapid disappearance of coherence effects, and the ensuing probabilistic nature of the medium induced cascade. We discuss how large radiative corrections modify the classical picture of the gluon cascade, and how these can be absorbed in a renormalization of the jet quenching parameter $\hat q $. Then, we analyze the (wave)-turbulent transport of energy along the medium induced cascade, and point out the main characteristics of the angular structure of such a cascade. Finally, color decoherence of the in-cone jet structure is discussed. Modest contact with phenomenology is presented towards the end of the review., Review to appear in QGP 5, 55 pages, 15 figures

Abstract

To any solution of a linear system of differential equations, we associate a kernel, correlators satisfying a set of loop equations, and in presence of isomonodromic parameters, a Tau function. We then study their semiclassical expansion (WKB type expansion in powers of the weight hbar per derivative) of these quantities. When this expansion is of topological type (TT), the coefficients of expansions are computed by the topological recursion with initial data given by the semiclassical spectral curve of the linear system. This provides an efficient algorithm to compute them at least when the semiclassical spectral curve is of genus 0. TT is a non trivial property, and it is an open problem to find a criterion which guarantees it is satisfied. We prove TT and illustrate our construction for the linear systems associated to the q-th reductions of KP - which contain the (p,q) models as a specialization., 49 pages

Abstract

Interstellar and circumstellar matter.-- et al., The quest for a B-mode imprint from primordial gravity waves on the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) requires the characterization of foreground polarization from Galactic dust. We present a statistical study of the filamentary structure of the 353 GHz Planck Stokes maps at high Galactic latitude, relevant to the study of dust emission as a polarized foreground to the CMB. We filter the intensity and polarization maps to isolate filaments in the range of angular scales where the power asymmetry between E-modes and B-modes is observed. Using the Smoothed Hessian Major Axis Filament Finder (SMAFF), we identify 259 filaments at high Galactic latitude, with lengths larger or equal to 2° (corresponding to 3.5 pc in length for a typical distance of 100 pc). Thesefilaments show a preferred orientation parallel to the magnetic field projected onto the plane of the sky, derived from their polarization angles. We present mean maps of the filaments in Stokes I, Q, U, E, and B, computed by stacking individual images rotated to align the orientations of the filaments. Combining the stacked images and the histogram of relative orientations, we estimate the mean polarization fraction of the filaments to be 11%. Furthermore, we show that the correlation between the filaments and the magnetic field orientations may account for the E and B asymmetry and the CℓTE/CℓEE ratio, reported in the power spectra analysis of the Planck353 GHz polarization maps. Abstract

Cubic surfaces embedded in complex projective 3-space are a classical illustration of the use of old and new methods in algebraic geometry. Recently, they made their appearance in physics, and in particular aroused the interest of Raymond Stora, to the memory of whom these notes are dedicated, and to whom I'm very much indebted. Each smooth cubic surface has a rich geometric structure, which I review briefly, with emphasis on the 27 lines and the combinatorics of their intersections. Only elementary methods are used, relying on first order perturbation/deformation theory. I then turn to the study of the family of cubic surfaces. They depend on 20 parameters, and the action of the 15 parameter group S L 4 ( C ) splits the family in orbits depending on 5 parameters. This takes us into the realm of (geometric) invariant theory. I review briefly the classical theorems on the structure of the ring of polynomial invariants and illustrate its many facets by looking at a simple example, before turning to the already involved case of cubic surfaces. The invariant ring was described in the 19 th century. I show how to retrieve this description via counting/generating functions and character formulae.

Abstract

We describe the most recent data on the diffractive structure functions from the H1 and ZEUS Collaborations at HERA using four models. First, a Pomeron Structure Function (PSF) model, in which the Pomeron is considered as an object with parton distribution functions. Then, the Bartels Ellis Kowalski Wusthoff (BEKW) approach is discussed, assuming the simplest perturbative description of the Pomeron using a two-gluon ladder. A third approach, the Bialas Peschanski (BP) model, based on the dipole formalism is then described. Finally, we discuss the Golec-Biernat-W\"usthoff (GBW) saturation model which takes into account saturation effects. The best description of all avaible measurements can be achieved with either the PSF based model or the BEKW approach. In particular, the BEKW prediction allows to include the highest $\beta$ measurements, which are dominated by higher twists effects and provide an efficient and compact parametrisation of the diffractive cross section. The two other models also give a good description of cross section measurements at small $x$ with a small number of parameters. The comparison of all predictions allows us to identify interesting differences in the behaviour of the effective pomeron intercept and in the shape of the longitudinal component of the diffractive structure functions. In this last part, we present some features that can be discriminated by new experimental measurements, completing the HERA program., Comment: 32 pages, 18 figures

Abstract

We consider the Q-state Potts model in the random-cluster formulation, defined on finite two-dimensional lattices of size L x N with toroidal boundary conditions. Due to the non-locality of the clusters, the partition function Z(L,N) cannot be written simply as a trace of the transfer matrix T\_L. Using a combinatorial method, we establish the decomposition Z(L,N) = \sum\_{l,D\_k} b^{l,D\_k} K\_{l,D\_k}, where the characters K\_{l,D\_k} = \sum\_i (\lambda\_i)^N are simple traces. In this decomposition, the amplitudes b^{l,D\_k} of the eigenvalues \lambda\_i of T\_L are labelled by the number l=0,1,...,L of clusters which are non-contractible with respect to the transfer (N) direction, and a representation D\_k of the cyclic group C\_l. We obtain rigorously a general expression for b^{l,D\_k} in terms of the characters of C\_l, and, using number theoretic results, show that it coincides with an expression previously obtained in the continuum limit by Read and Saleur., Comment: 29 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

For the synthesis of superheavy elements, it is indispensable to divide the fusion process into two steps : Overcoming the Coulomb barrier and passing over the conditional saddle or the ridgeline. To facilitate the understanding of the mechanism which explains the fusion hindrance, we first employ an analytic model with an inverted parabola for the saddle. Then, results by realistic calculations are given for the cold fusion. Ambiguities of the model are also discussed for future investigations. Since the model is general, it is applied to incident channels with neutron-rich projectiles and/or targets. These are necessary for synthesis of nucleides in so-called superheavy island around Z =114 and N =184.

Abstract

We review and extend a novel approach that we introduced recently, to describe general dark energy or scalar-tensor models. Our approach relies on an ADM formulation based on the hypersurfaces where the underlying scalar field is uniform. The advantage of this approach is that it can describe in the same language and in a minimal way a vast number of existing models, such as quintessence models, $F(R)$ theories, scalar tensor theories, their Horndeski extensions and beyond. It also naturally includes Horava-Lifshitz theories. As summarized in this review, our approach provides a unified treatment of the linear cosmological perturbations about a FLRW universe, obtained by a systematic expansion of our general action up to quadratic order. This shows that the behaviour of these linear perturbations is generically characterized by five time-dependent functions. We derive the full equations of motion in the Newtonian gauge, and obtain in particular the equation of state for dark energy perturbations, in the Horndeski case, in terms of these functions. Our unifying description thus provides the simplest and most systematic way to confront theoretical models with current and future cosmological observations., Comment: 32 pages. Corrected typos. Abstract

We discuss various aspects of the O(N)-model in the vacuum and at finite temperature within the Phi-derivable expansion scheme to order lambda^2. In continuation to an earlier work, we look for a physical parametrization in the N=4 case that allows to accommodate the lightest mesons. Using zero-momentum curvature masses to approximate the physical masses, we find that, in the parameter range where a relatively large sigma mass is obtained, the scale of the Landau pole is lower compared to that obtained in the two-loop truncation. This jeopardizes the insensitivity of the observables to the ultraviolet regulator and could hinder the predictivity of the model. Both in the N=1 and N=4 cases, we also find that, when approaching the chiral limit, the (iterative) solution to the Phi-derivable equations is lost in an interval around the would-be transition temperature. In particular, it is not possible to conclude at this order of truncation on the order of the transition in the chiral limit. Because the same issue could be present in other approaches, we investigate it thoroughly by considering a localized version of the Phi-derivable equations, whose solution displays the same qualitative features, but allows for a more analytical understanding of the problem. In particular, our analysis reveals the existence of unphysical branches of solutions which can coalesce with the physical one at some temperatures, with the effect of opening up a gap in the admissible values for the condensate. Abstract

In a previous publication, we have established a collinearly-improved version of the Balitsky-Kovchegov (BK) equation, which resums to all orders the radiative corrections enhanced by large double transverse logarithms. Here, we study the relevance of this equation as a tool for phenomenology, by confronting it to the HERA data. To that aim, we first improve the perturbative accuracy of our resummation, by including two classes of single-logarithmic corrections: those generated by the first non-singular terms in the DGLAP splitting functions and those expressing the one-loop running of the QCD coupling. The equation thus obtained includes all the next-to-leading order corrections to the BK equation which are enhanced by (single or double) collinear logarithms. We then use numerical solutions to this equation to fit the HERA data for the electron-proton reduced cross-section at small Bjorken x. We obtain good quality fits for physically acceptable initial conditions. Our best fit, which shows a good stability up to virtualities as large as Q^2=400 GeV^2 for the exchanged photon, uses as an initial condition the running-coupling version of the McLerran-Venugopalan model, with the QCD coupling running according to the smallest dipole prescription., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures; minor corrections to fit results and few comments added

Abstract

We study the transport equation describing a dense system of gluons, in the small scattering angle approximation, taking into account medium-generated effective masses of the gluons. We focus on the case of overpopulated systems that are driven to Bose-Einstein condensation on their way to thermalization. The presence of a mass modifies the dispersion relation of the gluon, as compared to the massless case, but it is shown that this does not change qualitatively the scaling behavior in the vicinity of the onset., 25 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

We provide a complete description of the angular distribution of gluons in a medium-induced QCD cascade. We identify two components in the distribution, a soft component dominated by soft multiple scatterings, and a hard component dominated by a few hard scatterings. The typical angle that marks the boundary between these two components is determined analytically as a function of the energy of the observed gluon and the size of the medium. We construct the complete solution (beyond the diffusion approximation) in the regime where multiple branchings dominate the dynamics of the cascade in the form of a power series in the number of collisions with the medium particles. The coefficients of this expansions are related to the moments of the distribution in the diffusion approximation and are determined analytically. The angular distribution may be useful in phenomenological studies of jet shapes in heavy-ion collisions., Comment: 20 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

We study the angular broadening of a medium-induced QCD cascade. We derive the equation that governs the evolution of the average transverse momentum squared of the gluons in the cascade as a function of the medium length, and we solve this equation analytically. Two regimes are identified. For a medium of a not too large size, and for not too soft gluons, the transverse momentum grows with the size of the medium according to standard momentum broadening. The other regime, visible for a medium of a sufficiently large size and very soft gluons, is a regime dominated by multiple branchings: there, the average transverse momentum saturates to a value that is independent of the size of the medium. This structure of the in-medium QCD cascade is, at least qualitatively, compatible with the recent data on dijet asymmetry., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures
