1. Sorption of cadmium, zinc and copper in dominant soils of the Zagreb aquifer system, Croatia

Abstract

Contamination of soils with potentially toxic metals (PTMs) is an environmental problem. In this study, sorption of cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) in four soil profiles (two Fluvisols, one Gleysol, and one Cambisol), representing the dominant soils of the Zagreb aquifer system, were studied using a multi element laboratory batch test. Mathematical expressions were applied to establish the relationship between the concentration of the adsorbent in the liquid phase and the solid phaSe at equilibrium and in laboratory conditions. The study revealed that the investigated soils have a higher capacity to sorb Cu than Zn and Cd. The most significant physicochemical characteristics of soils, influencing sorption, are pH, carbonate content (minerals) and organic matter. Although all PTMs in all analyzed soils had a similar sorption capacity, the variation of sorption was higher in the siltic soils (Fluvisols) compared with the texturally finer (loamic) Gleysol and Cambisol soils, as well as in the subsoil horizons compared with the topsoils. Results indicate that sorption of PTMs is more influenced by physicochemical characteristics at different soil depths than by soil type, which is confirmed with a higher affinity for Zn and Cd bonding in the topsoil horizons. Also, it has been shown that Cd may pose more of a threat to soils and groundwater due to its toxicity and relatively high mobility in comparison with Zn and Cu.

2. Sorpcija potencijalno toksičnih metala u aluvijalnom tlu na području vodocrpilišta Petruševec

Abstract

Predmet ovog diplomskog rada je bio odrediti sorpcijske parametre u uzorcima aluvijalnog tla prikupljenim na području vodocrpilišta Petruševec. Ciljevi rada su bili: izraditi sorpcijske izoterme za Cu, Zn i Cd, odrediti parametre sorpcije te ih usporediti s parametrima tla i utvrditi sorpcijski kapacitet pojedinog uzorka tla. Porušeni uzorci su tretirani multiotopinom modre galice (CuSO4*H2O), cinkovog sulfata (ZnSO4) i kadmijeva klorida (CdCl2) u različitim koncentracijama. Koncentracije Cu, Zn i Cd su određene primjenom atomske apsorpcijske spektrometrije (AAS). Sorpcijski procesi za Zn i Cd su opisani Freundlichovim izotermnim modelom, dok su sorpcijski parametri za Cu opisani linearnim izotermnim modelom. Pripovršinski uzorci imaju najveću sorpciju, a sa porastom dubine sorpcija se smanjuje. Najveći relativni sorpcijski kapacitet ima bakar, zatim slijede cink i kadmij. Usporedbom parametara sorpcije s karakteristikama tla može se zaključiti kako najveći utjecaj na sorpciju potencijalno toksičnih metala imaju kapacitet kationske zamjene i veličina čestica odnosno udio čestica, silta., The goal of this thesis is to determine sorption parameters of soil samples collected near the Petruševec wellfield. The main goals of this research are to create sorption isotherms of Cu, Zn and Cd, determine sorption parameters and compare them with soil parameters and to determine sorption capacity of each soil sample. The bulk soil samples were treated using multisolution of blue vitriol (CuSO4*H2O), zinc sulfate (ZnSO4) and cadmium chloride (CdCl2) in various concentrations. Concentrations of Cu, Zn and Cd were determined using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Sorption processes for Zn and Cd are well described by the Freundlich isotherm model, whereas sorption of Cu was better described by the linear isotherm model. Surface samples have the highest sorption. As soil depth increased, the strength of sorption decreased. Cu has the highest relative sorption capacity followed by Zn and Cd. By comparing the sorption parameters with the soil parameters, it can be concluded that cation exchange capacity and the particle size have the greatest influence on the sorption of potentially toxic metals.

3. Petrološke i morfometrijske karakteristike arenitnih sedimenata s područja Požeške kotline

Abstract

U završnom radu analizirane su petrografske i morfološke značajke zrna. Od ukupno 17 obrađenih uzoraka, njih 13 je determinarano kao litični arenit, a 4 kao arkozni arenit. Uzorci su uzeti iz intervala srednjeg miocena, na obodima Požeške kotline. U morfološkom pogledu, arkozni areniti će biti zaobljeniji od karbonata jer su zrna feldspata podložnija kemijskom trošenju s obzirom da su nastali u predmarinskim okolišima, te je za njih karakterističan riječni transport. S druge strane, litične arenite karakterizira veliki broj karbonatnih zrna budući da su nastali u marinskim okolišima ili deltnom okolišu u kojoj je erodirano zaleđe u kojem je već postojala znatna količina karbonatnih stijena. Za formiranje arkoza potrebna je veća erozija i visoko uzdignuta površina, te možemo pretpostaviti da takvi uzorci dolaze sa viših dijelova gora koje okružuju Požešku kotlinu.
