- Abstract
The globalisation process has an impact at the micro-level on life-course patterns: concretely, the trajectories of young people into adulthood are being sharply modified. At a European level, the extension, de-linearisation, reversibility and diversification of youth trajectories have been identified as major changes. However, the extent to which these changes affect young people within each country depends on their respective welfare regimes. This article analyses how the Mediterranean welfare regime shapes youth trajectories among Catalan young people and explores the hypothesis that these constraints will make those trajectories less sensitive to the general trends of change identified at a European level. The research is based on an analysis of the Catalan Youth Survey, an official statistic that contains retrospective data on Educational, Work, Housing and Family transitions. The results offer an integrated typology of youth transitions in Catalonia and show how the persistence of traditional patterns of transition are the logical result of the particular articulation of the welfare regime and cultural patterns among Catalan young people. piloting, pilot study, longitudinal, dress rehearsal - Abstract
Pilot studies are a valuable tool to pinpoint the areas in which the main study could fail and should be improved. This is especially important in comprehensive large-scale longitudinal studies where piloting is considered as prerequisite and necessity. Despite their noted importance pilot studies are still under-utilised in large scale studies and reporting of pilots is often partial and incomplete. There is a lot of confusion among researchers what are good practices and what to avoid in piloting. Because of that, we wanted to emphasize good piloting practices so that researchers utilise piloting as a tool in research more often and in the best way. We identified ten large longitudinal birth cohort studies to provide a comprehensive overview of best practices and challenges in piloting approaches. The focus was put on birth cohort studies that follow many individuals born at a particular time through the course of their lives because of their complexity and essential need for piloting multiple waves due to developmental changes of children over time. Through our analyses, we identified regular occurrence of three types of pilots in such studies – pre-pilots, instruments pilots and dress rehearsals. All three types differ regarding sample size, sampling procedures, aim and desired outcomes. Thus, we recommend incorporating all three types in every wave before the main study. This is especially important in the first decade of the study where participants go through extensive developmental changes that require a lot of modifications in instruments, data collection methods etc. There is a lot of variability regarding sample sizes from study to study, but one characteristic is consistent in all studies: pre-pilots always have relatively smaller sample size than instruments pilots, and instruments pilots have relatively smaller sample size than dress rehearsals. Also, pre-pilots and instruments pilots most often incorporate convenient sampling procedures, while dress rehearsals sampling procedure always matches the one that will be implemented in the main study. We found that few studies did merge the pilot study data with the main study data, however, we would recommend keeping pilot study participants and data separate from the main studies because the two differ in many characteristics. One serious challenge that needs to be addressed in future studies is a lack of longitudinal samples in pilots. Although it is more challenging, incorporating longitudinal samples would be beneficial because it enables calculation of attrition rates from wave to wave that can indicate potential attrition difficulties in the main study. Also, there are no clear criteria based on which the researcher would conclude if the pilot was a success or failure. Thus, we recommend that before conducting the pilot, researchers state the desired objectives and outcomes of a pilot to properly evaluate its success. Finally, we urge researchers to report all pilot study information straightforwardly through the separate chapter in technical reports or user guides or even better, separate technical report. To have such information publicly available is a good way of identifying and implementing better piloting practices.

pilot study, European Cohort Development Survey, children, well-being - Abstract
Conducting a pilot study prior to the actual, large-scale survey became a standard scientific tool used to test the research feasibility, its equipment and methods. Moreover, the pilot study can provide logistical and financial estimates for the main survey and the project can be steered more efficiently in terms of resources and time. Pilots can also play important role in attracting research grants as the piloting results can be placed before the funding bodies. This paper presents an overview of piloting practices in large-scale longitudinal surveys conducted in the field of social sciences. The focus is put on longitudinal and panel surveys and surveys conducted on children and youth. Also, the piloting model of the future European Cohort Development Survey will be presented and elaborated. The EDCP pilot is designed to mirror main study fieldwork as closely as possible in order to test all elements of fieldwork procedures. It is planned as a smaller scale version of the main study preceding each wave of the main research and assessing each cohort of children and youth. Specific challenges and problems that can occur in piloting cross- national panel cohort survey on children and youth will be discussed.

- Abstract
Serracant, P. (2012). Changing youth? Continuities and ruptures in transitions into adulthood among Catalan young people. Journal of Youth Studies, 15(2): 161-176. Serracant, P. (2014). “A brute indicator for a NEET case. Genesis and evolution of a problematic concept and results from an alternative indicator”. Social Indicators Research, 117: 401-419. Not in Education, Employment or Training). “The impact of the economic crisis on youth trajectories. A case study from Southern Europe”. Young. Nordic Journal of Youth Research. Article embargat. This thesis is presented as a collection of publications, consisting in three academic papers. The general objective of the thesis is to analyse the changes and continuities produced in Catalonia in the trajectories of transition to adulthood; it focuses on the transformations produced in the trajectories marked by vulnerability. Apart from identifying, quantifying and analysing these patterns, the detected changes are linked to the familistic welfare regime and framed into the context of transformation of youth trajectories identified at European level. Serracant, P. (2014). Changing youth? Continuities and ruptures in transitions into adulthood among Catalan young people. Journal of Youth Studies, 15(2): 161-176. The first paper analyses the characteristics of the trajectories of transition into adulthood among Catalan young people during the last year of economic growth previous to the crisis that started in 2008. It aims to find to what extent the patterns of change detected at European level could be found in Catalonia. The research is based on analysing the data of the Catalan Youth Survey from 2007, which allow the study of the educational, labour and family trajectories of young people. The analysis is based on an integrated typology of transition trajectories that allows approaching the studied concepts. Serracant, P. (2014). “A brute indicator for a NEET case. Genesis and evolution of a problematic concept and results from an alternative indicator”. Social Indicators Research, 117: 401-419. The second article analyses the issue of those people that are in a NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) situation. Both the concept and the main indicators used to analyse this issue are recent and have been controversial from their origins. Based on a critical review of the standard analysis of this issue, the paper offers an alternative indicator using the data of the Labour Force Survey and analysis its results for the Catalan case. Serracant, P. (forthcoming). “The impact of the economic crisis on youth trajectories. A case study from Southern Europe”. Young. Nordic Journal of Youth Research. The third article analyses the impact of the crisis on the patterns of transition followed by young people in Catalonia. Particularly, it analyses to what extent the current economic crisis has modified the extension, non-linearity, reversibility and diversification of youth trajectories. Data from the Catalan Youth Survey from 2007 and 2012 is used to analyse the changes in the transition patterns from one period to the other. The paper intends to contribute to the debate over the nature of the changes experimented in youth trajectories at European level during the last decades.

This article presents the results of the seven questions posed in the Catalan Youth Survey (EJC) 2012 which refer to matters related to language: initial language, customary language and language of use in five different situations (with friends, at school, at the university or at work, with the partner, with the children and with a stranger). This static photograph is complemented by three dynamic elements. In the first place, results of the 2012 Survey are compared with those of 2007 to obtain an idea of the impact made by demographic and contextual changes in language practice. Secondly, changes in language use are analysed to discover which contexts lead to maintaining or changing language in the different situations.
