The larger foraminifera of the lower part of the Jafnayn Formation outcropping in the Wadi Sayq, in the Paleocene series of the eastern Oman Mountains, have been studied and described in detail. The analysis have allowed us to develop a detailed systematic description of each taxa, constraining their biostratigraphic distribution and defining the associated foraminifera assemblages. The taxonomic study has permitted us to identify each morphotype precisely and describe three new taxa, namely, Ercumentina sayqensis n. gen. n. sp. Lacazinella rogeri n. sp. and Globoreticulinidae new family. The first assemblage is characterized by the presence of Coskinon sp., Dictyoconus cf. turriculus Hottinger and Drobne, Anatoliella ozalpiensis Sirel, Ercumentina sayqensis n. gen. n. sp. Serra-Kiel and Vicedo , Lacazinella rogeri n. sp. Serra-Kiel and Vicedo, Mandanella cf. flabelliformis Rahaghi, Azzarolina daviesi (Henson), Lockhartia retiata Sander, Dictyokathina simplex Smout and Miscellanites globularis (Rahaghi). The second assemblage is constituted by the forms Pseudofallotella persica (Hottinger and Drobne), Dictyoconus cf. turriculus Hottinger and Drobne, Lacazinella rogeri n. sp. Serra-Kiel and Vicedo, Azzarolina daviesi (Henson), Keramosphera? cf. iranica Rahaghi, Lockhartia haimei (Davies), Lockhartia retiata Sander, Sakesaria trichilata Sander, Kathina delseota Smout, Elazigina harabekayisensis Sirel, Daviesina khatiyahi Smout, and Miscellanea juliettae Leppig. The first assemblage can be considered to belong to the Shallow Bentic Zone SBZ2 (early Selandian age), and the second assemblage to the SBZ3 (late Selandian-early Thanetian age).This paper shows, for the first time in the Middle East area, a correlation between the Selandian larger foraminifera and planktonic foraminifera biozones.

Se presenta la primera descripción de las características estratigráficas y sedimentológicas de las calizas bartonienses de la Sierra de Santo Domingo (Sierras Exteriores occidentales, Zaragoza – Huesca). La unidad representa la última etapa de desarrollo de plataformas carbonatadas del Eoceno en la cuenca de Jaca tras la transgresión del Luteciense terminal, dando paso a una sedimentación deltaica. En este contexto, la fábrica de carbonatos estuvo condicionada por un nivel trófico elevado. El depósito tuvo lugar en un ambiente de rampa carbonatada, en el que se diferencian dominios de rampa interna, media y externa. La rampa interna se caracterizó por praderas de fanerógamas marinas, cuya presencia se infiere por la abundancia de foraminíferos acervulínidos con morfologías de gancho, rodofíceas geniculadas y fragmentos de equinodermos. En las facies de rampa media dominan los briozoos, bivalvos y foraminíferos como Discocyclina y Operculina. Finalmente, los pequeños foraminíferos bentónicos y planctónicos son los componentes más abundantes de la rampa externa. Estas asociaciones de carbonatos, de tipo heterozoan y con componentes fotodependientes subordinados, evidencian la influencia de la sedimentación deltaica. Por sus características estratigráficas y sedimentológicas se considera conveniente la definición de las calizas de Santo Domingo como un miembro diferenciado dentro de la Fm. Utilizing bio- and chemostratigraphy, we propose an integrated dating of the upper part of the continental “Sparnacien des Corbières” and the overlying marine “lower-middle Ilerdian” succession of AlbasLe Clot (Corbières, France), in order to refine the position and age of the Le Clot mammalian locality. Our data show that this locality, which has yielded a mammal fauna early Ypresian in age (close to MP7, Mammal Paleo gene level), is located above the end of the carbon isotope excursion (CIE) the base of which defines the Paleocene–Eocene boundary. The Le Clot mammalian locality is therefore younger than the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), and also younger than the Dormaal MP7 reference fauna in Belgium, which is correlated with the onset of the CIE (nannoplankton Zone NP9b). Moreover, we demonstrate that the Le Clot mammalian locality is older than the Eocene Thermal Maximum 2 (ETM2) event, located in the lower part of NP11 Zone. Associated with the ages of benthic foraminifera and dinocysts observed in the succession, our d13Corg chemostratigraphy suggests that the Le Clot locality is correlated to the upper NP10–lower NP11 Zones. The refined location of the CIE in the Albas-Le Clot section is discussed because two carbon isotope excursions are potentially recorded in the upper “Sparnacien des Corbières”, here recognized as mainly Thanetian in age.

In the southeastern Ebro Foreland Basin, the marine deposits of Lutetian and Bartonian age show excellent outcrop conditions, with a great lateral and horizontal continuity of lithostratigraphic units. In addition, the rich fossil record -mainly larger foraminifers-, provides iostratigraphic data of regional relevance for the whole Paleogene Pyrenean Basin, that can be used for the Middle Eocene biocorrelation of the western Tethys. This contribution is a sedimentary and biostratigraphic synthesis of the basic outcrops and sections of the Lutetian and Bartonian marine and transitional deposits in the southeastern sector of the Ebro Foreland Basin.

The stratigraphic basis of this work has allowed the use of larger foraminifers in the biostratigraphic characterisation of the new Shallow Benthic Zones (SBZ). This part of the volume presents a description of the sedimentary cycles formed by the transgressive-regressive systems of the Lutetian and Bartonian in the southeastern sector of the Ebro Foreland Basin. Concerning the Lutetian deposits studied in the Amer-Vic and Empordà areas, four sedimentary cycles have been characterised. The first and second are found within the Tavertet/Girona Limestone Formation (Reguant, 1967; Pallí, 1972), while the third and fourth cycles cover the Coll de Malla Marl Formation (Clavell et al., 1970), the Bracons Formation (Gich, 1969, 1972), the Banyoles Marl Formation (Almela and Ríos, 1943), and the Bellmunt Formation (Gich, 1969, 1972). In the Bartonian deposits studied in the Igualada area, two transgressive-regressive sedimentary cycles have been characterised in the Collbàs Formation (Ferrer, 1971), the Igualada Formation (Ferrer, 1971), and the Tossa Formation (Ferrer, 1971). The Shallow Benthic Zones (SBZs) recognised within the Lutetian are the following: SBZ 13, from the Early Lutetian, in the transgressive system of the first cycle; SBZ 14, from the Middle Lutetian, in the second cycle and the lower part of the transgressive system of the third cycle; SBZ 15, from the Middle Lutetian, in the remaining parts of the third system; SBZ 16, from the Late Lutetian, throughout the fourth cycle. Se presentan nuevos datos litoestratigráñcos y hioestratigráficos del Paleógeno de Sierra Espuña (zona limítrofe entre la zona interna y la externa de la cordillera Bética). Los datos bioestratigráficos se han basado en las zonas de macroforami~ferosf,o rarniníferos planctónicos, y nanoplancton calcáreo. Los resultados litoeshatigráficos y bioestratigráficos se han correlacionado con una escala cronoestratigráfica.
