Abstract

In the last decades, digital manufacturing has constituted the headline of what is starting to be known as the 'fourth industrial revolution', where the fabrication processes comprise a hybrid of technologies that blur the lines between fundamental sciences, engineering, and even medicine as never seen before. One of the reasons why this mixture is inevitable has to do with the fact that we live in an era that incorporates technology in every single aspect of our daily lives. In the industry, this has translated into fabrication versatility, as follows: design changes on a final product are just one click away, fabrication chains have evolved towards continuous roll-to roll processes, and, most importantly, the overall costs and fabrication speeds are matching and overcoming most of the traditional fabrication methods. Laser-induced forward transfer (LIFT) stands out as a versatile set of fabrication techniques, being the closest approach to an all-in-one additive manufacturing method compatible with virtually any material. In this technique, laser radiation is used to propel the material of interest and deposit it at user-defined locations with high spatial resolution. By selecting the proper laser parameters and considering the interaction of the laser light with the material, it is possible to transfer this technique from robust inorganic materials to fragile biological samples. In this work, we first present a brief introduction on the current developments of the LIFT technique by surveying recent scientific review publications. Then, we provide a general research overview by making an account of the publication and citation numbers of scientific papers on the LIFT technique considering the last three decades. At the same time, we highlight the geographical distribution and main research institutions that contribute to this scientific output.

Abstract

We present the discovery of three sub-Neptune-sized planets transiting the nearby and bright Sun-like star HD 191939 (TIC 269701147, TOI 1339), a $K_{s}=7.18$ magnitude G8 V dwarf at a distance of only 54 parsecs. We validate the planetary nature of the transit signals by combining five months of data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite with follow-up ground-based photometry, archival optical images, radial velocities, and high angular resolution observations. The three sub-Neptunes have similar radii ($R_{b} = 3.42^{+0.11}_{-0.11}\,R_{\oplus}$, $R_{c}=3.23_{-0.11}^{+0.11}\,R_{\oplus}$, and $R_{d}=3.16_{-0.11}^{+0.11}\,R_{\oplus}$) and their orbits are consistent with a stable, circular, and co-planar architecture near mean motion resonances of 1:3 and 3:4 ($P_{b}=8.88$ days, $P_{c}=28.58$ days, and $P_{d}=38.35$ days). The HD~191939 system is an excellent candidate for precise mass determinations of the planets with high-resolution spectroscopy due to the host star's brightness and low chromospheric activity. Moreover, the system's compact and near-resonant nature can provide an independent way to measure planetary masses via transit timing variations while also enabling dynamical and evolutionary studies. Finally, as a promising target for multi-wavelength transmission spectroscopy of all three planets' atmospheres, HD 191939 can offer valuable insight into multiple sub-Neptunes born from a proto-planetary disk that may have resembled that of the early Sun., Comment: 24 pages, 14 figures, 6 tables

Abstract

[EN] Remote sensing offers important inputs for sugarcane yield estimation, since its temporal and spatial approaches allow monitoring the phenological cycle of the crop. The objective of this research was to apply an operational method for the estimation of sugarcane yield and sugar content through the combination of field variables with vegetation indices, calculated with the satellite sensors on board Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 in a cooperative from Costa Rica. In addition, historical harvest data and start months of phenological cycle were used to estimate sugarcane yield and sugar content per ton using multiple linear regressions. The integration of historical data and Simple Ratio (SR) vegetation index, calculated in different steps of the phenological cycle (in the months of September, December and January), allowed us to obtain an estimation model of sugarcane yield (tons of sugarcane per hectare) with a regression coefficient (R2) of 0.64 and a RMSE of 8.0 tons/ha. While for sugar content (kilograms of refined sugar per ton) we obtained a R2 of 0.59 integrating historical variables and the vegetation indexes SR and Green Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (GNDVI); in this case the RMSE was 4.9 kg/tons. Ultimately, this operational method of yield estimation provides tools for decision making before, during and after the harvest stage., [ES] La teledetección proporciona información de importancia en la estimación de rendimientos de caña de azúcar, ya que su abordaje temporal y espacial permite hacer el seguimiento del cultivo durante su ciclo fenológico. El objetivo de este trabajo era aplicar un método operativo para la estimación del rendimiento agrícola e industrial a través de la combinación de variables de campo con índices de vegetación, calculados con los sensores satelitales a bordo de Sentinel-2 y Landsat-8 en una cooperativa de Costa Rica. Se utilizaron además registros históricos de cosecha y meses de inicio del ciclo fenológico para estimar mediante regresiones lineales múltiples los rendimientos. La integración de registros históricos y el índice de vegetación Simple Ratio (SR), calculados en distintas etapas del ciclo fenológico (en los meses de septiembre, diciembre y enero), permitió obtener un modelo de estimación del rendimiento agrícola (toneladas de caña de azúcar por hectárea) con un coeficiente de regresión (R2) de 0,64 y un RMSE de 8,0 ton/ha. Mientras que para el rendimiento industrial (kilogramos de azúcar refinado por tonelada de caña de azúcar) se obtuvo un R2 de 0,59 integrando variables históricas y los índices de vegetación SR y Green Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (GNDVI); en este caso el RMSE fue de 4,9 kg/ton. En definitiva, este modelo operativo de estimación de rendimientos proporciona herramientas para la toma de decisiones antes, durante y después de la etapa de cosecha., La Universidad de Costa Rica, a través de la Oficina de Asuntos Internaciones y Cooperación Externa (OAICE) ha financiado este trabajo, mediante el número de contrato OAICE-59-2021.
