One of the most important objectives of solar physics is the physical understanding of the solar atmosphere, the structure of which is also described in terms of the density (N) and temperature (T) distributions of the atmospheric matter. Several multi-frequency analyses show that the characteristics of these distributions are still debated, especially for the outer coronal emission. We aim to constrain the T and N distributions of the solar atmosphere through observations in the centimetric radio domain. We employ single-dish observations from two of the INAF radio telescopes at the K-band frequencies (18 - 26 GHz). We investigate the origin of the significant brightness temperature ($T_B$) level that we detected up to the upper corona ($\sim 800$ Mm of altitude with respect to the photospheric solar surface). To probe the physical origin of the atmospheric emission and to constrain instrumental biases, we reproduced the solar signal by convolving specific 2D antenna beam models. The analysis of the solar atmosphere is performed by adopting a physical model that assumes the thermal bremsstrahlung as the emission mechanism, with specific T and N distributions. The modelled $T_B$ profiles are compared with those observed by averaging solar maps obtained during the minimum of solar activity (2018 - 2020). The T and N distributions are compatible (within $25\%$ of uncertainty) with the model up to $\sim 60$ Mm and $\sim 100$ Mm of altitude, respectively. The analysis of the role of the antenna beam pattern on our solar maps proves the physical nature of the atmospheric emission in our images up to the coronal tails seen in our $T_B$ profiles. The Sun is an extraordinary workbench, from which several fundamental astronomical parameters can be measured with high precision. Among these parameters, the solar radius $R_{\odot}$ plays an important role in several aspects, such as in evolutionary models. Despite the efforts in obtaining accurate measurements of $R_{\odot}$, the subject is still debated and measurements are puzzling and/or lacking in many frequency ranges. We aimed to determine the mean, equatorial, and polar radii of the Sun ($R_c$, $R_{eq}$, and $R_{pol}$) in the frequency range 18.1 - 26.1 GHz. We employed single-dish observations from the newly-appointed Medicina "Gavril Grueff" Radio Telescope and the Sardinia Radio Telescope (SRT) throughout 5 years, from 2018 to mid-2023, in the framework of the SunDish project for solar monitoring. Two methods to calculate the radius at radio frequencies are considered and compared. To assess the quality of our radius determinations, we also analysed the possible degrading effects of the antenna beam pattern on our solar maps, using two 2D-models. We carried out a correlation analysis with the evolution of the solar cycle through the calculation of Pearson's correlation coefficient $\rho$. We obtained several values for the solar radius - ranging between 959 and 994 arcsec - and $\rho$, with typical errors of a few arcsec. Our $R_{\odot}$ measurements, consistent with values reported in literature, suggest a weak prolatness of the solar limb ($R_{eq}$ > $R_{pol}$), although $R_{eq}$ and $R_{pol}$ are statistically compatible within 3$\sigma$ errors. The correlation analysis using the solar images from Grueff shows (1) a positive correlation between the solar activity and the temporal variation of $R_c$ (and $R_{eq}$) at all observing frequencies, and (2) a weak anti-correlation between the temporal variation of $R_{pol}$ and the solar activity at 25.8 GHz., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures, 6 tables, accepted by A&A; v1

We present a new solar radio imaging system implemented through the upgrade of the large single-dish telescopes of the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF), not originally conceived for solar observations. During the development and early science phase of the project (2018-2020), we obtained about 170 maps of the entire solar disk in the 18-26 GHz band, filling the observational gap in the field of solar imaging at these frequencies. These solar images have typical resolutions in the 0.7-2 arcmin range and a brightness temperature sensitivity <10 K. Accurate calibration adopting the Supernova Remnant Cas A as a flux reference, provided typical errors <3% for the estimation of the quiet-Sun level components and for active regions flux measurements. As a first early science result of the project, we present a catalog of radio continuum solar imaging observations with Medicina 32-m and SRT 64-m radio telescopes including the multi-wavelength identification of active regions, their brightness and spectral characterization. The interpretation of the observed emission as thermal bremsstrahlung components combined with gyro-magnetic variable emission pave the way to the use of our system for long-term monitoring of the Sun. The main characteristics in the radio continuum spectra of Supernova Remnants (SNRs) result from simple synchrotron emission. In addition, electron acceleration mechanisms can shape the spectra in specific ways, especially at high radio frequencies. These features are connected to the age and the peculiar conditions of the local interstellar medium interacting with the SNR. Whereas the bulk radio emission is expected at up to $20-50$ GHz, sensitive high-resolution images of SNRs above 10 GHz are lacking and are not easily achievable, especially in the confused regions of the Galactic Plane. In the framework of the early science observations with the Sardinia Radio Telescope in February-March 2016, we obtained high-resolution images of SNRs Tycho, W44 and IC443 that provided accurate integrated flux density measurements at 21.4 GHz: 8.8 $\pm$ 0.9 Jy for Tycho, 25 $\pm$ 3 Jy for W44 and 66 $\pm$ 7 Jy for IC443. We coupled the SRT measurements with radio data available in the literature in order to characterise the integrated and spatially-resolved spectra of these SNRs, and to find significant frequency- and region-dependent spectral slope variations. For the first time, we provide direct evidence of a spectral break in the radio spectral energy distribution of W44 at an exponential cutoff frequency of 15 $\pm$ 2 GHz. This result constrains the maximum energy of the accelerated electrons in the range $6-13$ GeV, in agreement with predictions indirectly derived from AGILE and \textit{Fermi}-LAT gamma-ray observations. With regard to IC443, our results confirm the noticeable presence of a bump in the integrated spectrum around $20-70$ GHz that could result from a spinning dust emission mechanism., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

Observations of supernova remnants (SNRs) are a powerful tool for investigating the later stages of stellar evolution, the properties of the ambient interstellar medium, and the physics of particle acceleration and shocks. For a fraction of SNRs, multi-wavelength coverage from radio to ultra high-energies has been provided, constraining their contributions to the production of Galactic cosmic rays. Although radio emission is the most common identifier of SNRs and a prime probe for refining models, high-resolution images at frequencies above 5 GHz are surprisingly lacking, even for bright and well-known SNRs such as IC443 and W44. In the frameworks of the Astronomical Validation and Early Science Program with the 64-m single-dish Sardinia Radio Telescope, we provided, for the first time, single-dish deep imaging at 7 GHz of the IC443 and W44 complexes coupled with spatially-resolved spectra in the 1.5-7 GHz frequency range. Our images were obtained through on-the-fly mapping techniques, providing antenna beam oversampling and resulting in accurate continuum flux density measurements. The integrated flux densities associated with IC443 are S_1.5GHz = 134 +/- 4 Jy and S_7GHz = 67 +/- 3 Jy. For W44, we measured total flux densities of S_1.5GHz = 214 +/- 6 Jy and S_7GHz = 94 +/- 4 Jy. Spectral index maps provide evidence of a wide physical parameter scatter among different SNR regions: a flat spectrum is observed from the brightest SNR regions at the shock, while steeper spectral indices (up to 0.7) are observed in fainter cooling regions, disentangling in this way different populations and spectra of radio/gamma-ray-emitting electrons in these SNRs., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication to MNRAS on 18 May 2017

[Abridged] The Sardinia Radio Telescope (SRT) is the new 64-m dish operated by INAF (Italy). Its active surface will allow us to observe at frequencies of up to 116 GHz. At the moment, three receivers, one per focal position, have been installed and tested. The SRT was officially opened in October 2013, upon completion of its technical commissioning phase. In this paper, we provide an overview of the main science drivers for the SRT, describe the main outcomes from the scientific commissioning of the telescope, and discuss a set of observations demonstrating the SRT's scientific capabilities. One of the main objectives of scientific commissioning was the identification of deficiencies in the instrumentation and/or in the telescope sub-systems for further optimization. As a result, the overall telescope performance has been significantly improved. As part of the scientific commissioning activities, different observing modes were tested and validated, and first astronomical observations were carried out to demonstrate the science capabilities of the SRT. In addition, we developed astronomer-oriented software tools, to support future observers on-site. The astronomical validation activities were prioritized based on technical readiness and scientific impact. The highest priority was to make the SRT available for joint observations as part of European networks. As a result, the SRT started to participate (in shared-risk mode) in EVN (European VLBI Network) and LEAP (Large European Array for Pulsars) observing sessions in early 2014. In the period 2012 June - 2013 October, the Sardinia Radio Telescope (SRT) went through the technical commissioning phase. The characterization involved three first-light receivers, ranging in frequency between 300MHz and 26GHz, connected to a Total Power back-end. It also tested and employed the telescope active surface installed in the main reflector of the antenna. The instrument status and performance proved to be in good agreement with the expectations in terms of surface panels alignment (at present 300 um rms to be improved with microwave holography), gain (~0.6 K/Jy in the given frequency range), pointing accuracy (5 arcsec at 22 GHz) and overall single-dish operational capabilities. Unresolved issues include the commissioning of the receiver centered at 350 MHz, which was compromised by several radio frequency interferences, and a lower-than-expected aperture efficiency for the 22-GHz receiver when pointing at low elevations. Nevertheless, the SRT, at present completing its Astronomical Validation phase, is positively approaching its opening to the scientific community., Comment: 20 pages

Molecular oxygen, O2 has been expected historically to be an abundant component of the chemical species in molecular clouds and, as such, an important coolant of the dense interstellar medium. However, a number of attempts from both ground and from space have failed to detect O2 emission. The work described here uses heterodyne spectroscopy from space to search for molecular oxygen in the interstellar medium. The Odin satellite carries a 1.1 m sub-millimeter dish and a dedicated 119 GHz receiver for the ground state line of O2. Starting in 2002, the star forming molecular cloud core rho Oph A was observed with Odin for 34 days during several observing runs. We detect a spectral line at v(LSR) = 3.5 km/s with dv(FWHM) = 1.5 km/s, parameters which are also common to other species associated with rho Ohp A. This feature is identified as the O2 (N_J = 1_1 - 1_0) transition at 118 750.343 MHz. The abundance of molecular oxygen, relative to H2,, is 5E-8 averaged over the Odin beam. Submillimetre maps of NGC 891 have been obtained with the PRONAOS balloon-borne telescope and with the ISOPHOT instrument on board the ISO satellite. In this article, we also gather data from IRAS and SCUBA to present the complete submillimetre spectrum of this nearby edge-on spiral galaxy. We derive submillimetre emission profiles along the major axis. The modified blackbody fits, assuming a single dust component, lead to temperatures of 19-24 K toward the centre and 18-20 K toward the edges, with possible variations of the dust spectral index from 1.4 to 2. The two-component fits lead to a warm component temperature of 29 K all along the galaxy with a cold component at 16 K. The interstellar medium masses derived by these two methods are quite different: 4.6 x 10^9 Mo in the case of the one-component model and 12 x 10^9 Mo in the case of the two-component one. This two-component fit indicates that the cold dust to warm dust ratio is 20 to 40, the highest values being in the wings of this galaxy. Comparing to dust mass estimates, both estimations of the ISM mass are consistent with a gas to dust mass ratio of 240, which is close to the Milky Way value. We present a compilation of PRONAOS-based results concerning the temperature dependence of the dust submillimeter spectral index, including data from Galactic cirrus, star-forming regions, dust associated to a young stellar object, and a spiral galaxy. We observe large variations of the spectral index (from 0.8 to 2.4) in a wide range of temperatures (11 to 80 K). These spectral index variations follow a hyperbolic-shaped function of the temperature, high spectral indices (1.6-2.4) being observed in cold regions (11-20 K) while low indices (0.8-1.6) are observed in warm regions (35-80 K). Three distinct effects may play a role in this temperature dependence: one is that the grain sizes change in dense environments, another is that the chemical composition of the grains is not the same in different environments, a third one is that there is an intrinsic dependence of the dust spectral index on the temperature due to quantum processes. Odin has successfully observed the molecular core rho Oph A in the 572.5 GHz rotational ground state line of ammonia, NH3 (J,K = 1,0 - 0,0). The interpretation of this result makes use of complementary molecular line data obtained from the ground (C17O and CH3OH) as part of the Odin preparatory work. Comparison of these observations with theoretical model calculations of line excitation and transfer yields a quite ordinary abundance of methanol, X(CH3OH) = 3e-9. Unless NH3 is not entirely segregated from C17O and CH3OH, ammonia is found to be significantly underabundant with respect to typical dense core values, viz. We have mapped the submillimeter emission from the 1(10)-1(01) transition of ortho-water in the W3 star-forming region. A 5'x5' map of the W3 IRS4 and W3 IRS5 region reveals strong water lines at half the positions in the map. The relative strength of the Odin lines compared to previous observations by SWAS suggests that we are seeing water emission from an extended region. Across much of the map the lines are double-peaked, with an absorption feature at -39 km/s; however, some positions in the map show a single strong line at -43 km/s. We interpret the double-peaked lines as arising from optically thick, self-absorbed water emission near the W3 IRS5, while the narrower blue-shifted lines originate in emission near W3 IRS4. In this model, the unusual appearance of the spectral lines across the map results from a coincidental agreement in velocity between the emission near W3 IRS4 and the blue peak of the more complex lines near W3 IRS5. The strength of the water lines near W3 IRS4 suggests we may be seeing water emission enhanced in a photon-dominated region., Comment: Accepted to A&A Letters as part of the special Odin issue; 4 pages

We map a 50' x 30' area in and around the M17 molecular complex with the French submillimeter balloon-borne telescope PRONAOS, in order to better understand the thermal emission of cosmic dust and the structure of the interstellar medium. The PRONAOS-SPM instrument has an angular resolution of about 3', corresponding to a size of 2 pc at the distance of this complex, and a high sensitivity up to 0.8 MJy/sr. The observations are made in four wide submillimeter bands corresponding to effective wavelengths of 200, 260, 360 and 580 um. Using an improved map-making method for PRONAOS data, we map the M17 complex and faint condensations near the dense warm core. We derive maps of both the dust temperature and the spectral index, which vary over a wide range, from about 10 K to 100 K for the temperature and from about 1 to 2.5 for the spectral index. We show that these parameters are anticorrelated, the cold areas (10-20 K) having a spectral index around 2, whereas the warm areas have a spectral index between 1 and 1.5. We discuss possible causes of this effect, and we propose an explanation involving intrinsic variations of the grain properties. Indeed, to match the observed spectra with two dust components having a spectral index equal to 2 leads to very large and unlikely amounts of cold dust. We also give estimates of the column densities and masses of the studied clumps. We present here the continuum submillimeter maps of the molecular cloud around the M42 Nebula in the Orion region. These have been obtained in four wavelength bands (200, 260, 360 and 580 microns) with the ProNaOS two meter balloon-borne telescope. The area covered is 7 parsecs wide (50 arcmin at a distance of 470 pc) with a spatial resolution of about 0.4 parsec. Thanks to the high sensitivity to faint surface brightness gradients, we have found several cold condensations with temperatures ranging from 12 to 17 K, within 3 parsecs of the dense ridge. The statistical analysis of the temperature and spectral index spatial distribution shows an evidence of an inverse correlation between these two parameters. Being invisible in the IRAS 100 micron survey, some cold clouds are likely to be the seeds for future star formation activity going on in the complex. We estimate their masses and we show that two of them have masses higher than their Jeans masses, and may be gravitationally unstable., Comment: 4 figures, The Astrophysical Journal, Main Journal, in press

We have mapped with the French submillimeter balloon-borne telescope ProNaOS the thermal emission of the dust in the M42 Orion Nebula. The map obtained is 50' by 40' with an angular resolution of about 3' in the four efficient wavelengths 200 $\mic$, 260 $\mic$, 360 $\mic$ and 580 $\mic$. The temperature and index we obtain are highly variable within the studied region: the temperature varies from 12 K to 70 K, and the spectral index from 1.1 to 2.2. The statistical analysis of the temperature and spectral index spatial distribution in this region, as well as in the other regions mapped by ProNaOS, shows an evidence of an inverse correlation between these two parameters. We deduce the column densities of gas and the masses. We have designed and built a large-throughput dual channel photometer, Diabolo. This photometer is dedicated to the observation of millimetre continuum diffuse sources, and in particular, of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect and of anisotropies of the 3K background. We describe the optical layout and filtering system of the instrument, which uses two bolometric detectors for simultaneous observations in two frequency channels at 1.2 and 2.1 mm. The bolometers are cooled to a working temperature of 0.1 K provided by a compact dilution cryostat. The photometric and angular responses of the instrument are measured in the laboratory. First astronomical light was detected in March 1995 at the focus of the new Millimetre and Infrared Testa Grigia Observatory (MITO) Telescope. The established sensitivity of the system is of 7 mK_RJ s^1/2$. For a typical map of at least 10 beams, with one hour of integration per beam, one can achieve the rms values of y_SZ ~ 7 10^-5 and the 3K background anisotropy Delta T/T ~ 7 10^-5, in winter conditions. We also report on a novel bolometer AC readout circuit which allows for the first time total power measurements on the sky. This technique alleviates (but does not forbid) the use of chopping with a secondary mirror. We report the first detection of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich increment on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) at submillimetre wavelengths in the direction of a cluster of galaxies.It was achieved towards the rich cluster Abell 2163, using the PRONAOS 2-metre stratospheric telescope. Together with data from the SuZIE, Diabolo, and ISO-PHT experiments, these measurements, for the first time, give a complete picture of the far-infrared to millimetre spectral energy distribution of the diffuse emission toward a cluster of galaxies.
