The genus Enchodelus is an intriguing free-living dorylaimid nematode taxon. Its representatives display a distinct distributional pattern as they are mainly spread in high altitudinal enclaves of the Northern Hemisphere, being often associated with mosses and cliff vegetation. Although their feeding habits have not been studied with experimental protocols, it is traditionally assumed that they are omnivorous.The genus Enchodelus has not been recently revised; descriptions of many ‘old species’ (that have been described long ago and have not been reported since their original discovery) are of poor quality, hardly discoverable and do not conform to the nowadays taxonomical standards. Thus, a comprehensive compilation and analysis of their literature data is indispensable to provide new insights into the taxonomy of the genus and to elucidate its evolutionary relationships.This contribution provides a cyber catalogue of all Enchodelus species, 28 in total. It compiles available information from the key European Research Infrastructures, such as TreatmentBank, Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics Literature Services (SIBiLS), the Catalogue of Life (CoL), Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), European Nucleotide Archive (ENA) and Biodiversity Literature Repository (BLR). Data about their distribution (geographical records and habitats) are incorporated too and all brought together. It is completed with discussion and notes for some species, along with information on species distributions and microhabitats. Here, all available information on Enchodelus species is brought together. This will contribute to a more complete assessment of species diversity and distribution and support further biogeographical and ecological research.Besides, type material Enchodelus vestibulifer Altherr, 1952, deposited in the Museo Cantonale di Storia Naturale di Lugano (Switzerland), is re-examined and the species is considered as incertae sedis. Further, a new species of the genus found in Caucasus, Georgia is described after its morphological and molecular study; also morphological and molecular data for E. macrodorus (de Man, 1880) Thorne, 1939, the type species of the genus, collected from Spain are provided.

The order Psocodea, including barklice, booklice, and parasitic lice, is diverse and widely distributed since the Cretaceous. That is particularly the case for the speciose extinct family Empheriidae (Psocodea, Trogiomorpha, Atropetae), recently fused with the ‘Archaeatropidae’. Understanding the evolution of barklice is dependent in part on studying this family, as its representatives have been found from the Early Cretaceous to the Eocene, surviving the K/Pg extinction event. The phylogenetic relationships of Empheriidae in relation to other families, such as Lepidopsocidae or Psoquillidae, have been extensively debated. However, distinguishing diagnostic characters for the Empheriidae has proven challenging. In this study, we describe the new empheriid Santonipsocus mimeticus gen. et sp. nov. from Cretaceous Charentese amber (France). It is the third empheriid species found in this locality. The new genus is compared with the other genera in the family, and Proprionoglaris guyoti and Proprionoglaris axioperierga are revised based on the type material and new specimens. We explore the phylogeny of Empheriidae, both the relationships with other families and the inner relationships between the genera, through maximum parsimony analysis and Bayesian inference analysis. Our results suggest that Empheriidae may represent a paraphyletic evolutionary grade to the rest of Atropetae. The phylogenetic relationships between genera align with the biogeography of the family and support previous hypotheses. In addition, we discuss the possible biology of the members of the family, shedding light on the evolutionary history of Empheriidae.

Discolaimus haridwarensis sp. n. is described from agricultural fields of sugarcane in the Haridwar district, India. It is characterized by its 2.11–2.32 mm long body, lip region offset by deep constriction and 27–30 μm wide, odontostyle 20–23 μm long with aperture occupying 50–54% of its length, 436–487 μm long neck, pharyngeal expansion 57–59% of total neck length, uterus a simple tube-like structure 22–31 μm long or 0.3–0.5 times the corresponding body diameter, pars refringens vaginae absent, transverse vulva (V = 48–55), female tail conoid (34–40 µm, c = 53–68, c′ = 1.0–1.3) with rounded terminus, and males absent. The phylogenetic analysis inferred from the D2-D3 expansion segments of 28S rRNA gene and 18S rRNA gene sequences showed that Discolaimus haridwarensis sp. n. clustered with other dorylaimid species from the genus Discolaimus and the subfamily Discolaiminae.

Abstract Background Previous studies have demonstrated that fidaxomicin, a macrocyclic lactone antibiotic used to treat recurrent Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea, also displays potent in vitro bactericidal activity against Clostridium perfringens strains isolated from humans. However, to date, there is no data on the susceptibility to fidaxomicin of C. perfringens strains of animal origin. On the other hand, although combination therapy has become popular in human and veterinary medicine, limited data are available on the effects of antibiotic combinations on C. perfringens. We studied the in vitro response of 21 C. perfringens strains obtained from dogs and cats to fidaxomicin and combinations of fidaxomicin with six other antibiotics. Results When tested by an agar dilution method, fidaxomicin minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) ranged between 0.004 and 0.032 µg/ml. Moreover, the results of Etest-based combination assays revealed that the incorporation of fidaxomicin into the test medium at a concentration equivalent to half the MIC significantly increased the susceptibility of isolates to metronidazole and erythromycin in 71.4% and 61.9% of the strains, respectively, and the susceptibility to clindamycin, imipenem, levofloxacin, and vancomycin in 42.9–52.4% of the strains. In contrast, ¼ × MIC concentrations of fidaxomicin did not have any effect on levofloxacin and vancomycin MICs and only enhanced the effects of clindamycin, erythromycin, imipenem, and metronidazole in ≤ 23.8% of the tested strains. Conclusions The results of this study demonstrate that fidaxomicin is highly effective against C. perfringens strains of canine and feline origin. Although fidaxomicin is currently considered a critically important antimicrobial that has not yet been licensed for veterinary use, we consider that the results reported in this paper provide useful baseline data to track the possible emergence of fidaxomicin resistant strains of C. perfringens in the veterinary setting.

Purpose: To retrospectively analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the diagnosis, mortality rate, and survival period of malignant bronchial and lung neoplasms in the Burgos region, with the aim of promoting the development of strategies to improve cancer care management during health crises, highlighting the importance of non-pharmacological approaches to mitigate the negative impacts of future pandemics on lung cancer patients. Methods: This retrospective, longitudinal, single-center study was conducted in Burgos from 2019 to 2021. Participants included all patients diagnosed with malignant bronchial and lung neoplasms by the Pneumology unit of Complejo Asistencial Universitario de Burgos during the year immediately before and the year immediately after 31 March 2020, the official start date of the pandemic. Inclusion criteria encompassed patients diagnosed through histological or clinicoradiological methods, who provided informed consent. Data were systematically gathered using a specific template that included demographic information, disease stage, death, and survival time. Statistical analysis involved descriptive methods, ANOVA, and chi-square tests to assess differences in survival time and associations between categorical variables. Results: The results reveal a decrease in the number of patients diagnosed during the pandemic period (154 vs. 105), which could indicate delays in detection. However, there were no significant differences between the two periods, in which more than 60% of cases were detected in stage IV, being incompatible with survival. Although fewer patients died during the pandemic than expected (p = 0.015), patients diagnosed after the onset of the pandemic had a shorter survival time (182.43 ± 142.63 vs. 253.61 ± 224.30; p = 0.038). Specifically, those diagnosed in stage I during the pre-pandemic had a much longer survival time (741.50 days) than the rest of the patients (p < 0.05). In addition, among those diagnosed in stage IV, those diagnosed after the beginning of the pandemic had a shorter survival time (157.29 ± 202.36 vs. 241.18 ± 218.36; p = 0.026). Conclusions: Understanding these changes can support both medical strategies and non-pharmacological therapies to improve cancer care management during health crises, thus contributing to the optimization of public health.

Physical activity improves breast cancer-related symptoms in women and decreases cancer-related mortality. The main objective of this systematic review is to synthesize and analyze the evidence of the effect of dragon boating on the quality of life of female breast cancer survivors. A systematic review based on the PRISMA method was conducted using four databases (Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane and Pubmed). The search phrase used was “Breast Cancer” AND “Dragon Boat” AND “Quality of Life”. The search was conducted in June 2024. The PEDro method was used to ensure the quality of the publications. A total of 77 articles published until 2024 were selected, of which 10 met the inclusion criteria of assessing the application of dragon boating and that used a validated instrument to assess quality of life. There is no homogeneity in terms of the instrument used to measure QOL. The SF-36 was the most commonly used, followed by the FACT-B and the EORTC QLQ-C30. Five out of ten articles compared the improvement in quality of life between dragon boating and other physical activities, while 6 out of 10 analyzed the pre–post effect of dragon boat use. Dragon boating is a physical activity alternative that improves the quality of life of breast cancer survivors and reduces the symptomatology caused by the disease and its treatments. As dragon boat programs are applied over a longer period of time, the improvements in quality of life are greater. When compared with other types of physical activity, dragon boating does not show significant differences that position it as a better option for this population.

The effects of parity and somatic cell count in milk (SCC) threshold on the udder morphology, milkability traits, and milk composition was evaluated in 41 Canarian goats in mid-lactation. The animals were divided according to parity (1st, 2nd, and 3rd), and a SCC threshold of 2000 × 103 cells/mL in milk was set to evaluate the effect of this factor on the different measured parameters. Results showed that primiparous goats had the udder smaller and less distended than multiparous goats, but no differences were detected on milk flow parameters. Furthermore, SCC and total bacterial count (TBC) tended to be higher when the parity increased. On the other hand, goats with SCC ≤ 2000 × 103 had higher cistern-floor distance (CF) and lower TBC values compared with those goats with a count above the predetermined threshold. The results suggest that a reduction in SCC can be achieved by a selection of udder morphological traits. Moreover, milk flow parameters do not seem to be a tool to determine the udder health status in Canarian goats, but long-term studies are needed to verify it.

La presente investigación establece una clasificación de las Organizaciones de la Sociedad Civil españolas por su capacidad de influencia institucional, concretando las variables clave por las que la obtienen y su relevancia relativa. Tras consultar a 19 especialistas, la metodología puntúa a 55 de estas organizaciones según su número de asientos en comités públicos, miembros, empleados, antigüedad y presencia en registros de transparencia. Las entidades en cabeza se dedican principalmente a la representación de personas con diversidad funcional, o de pacientes. Las mejor posicionadas destacan por su número de miembros, mientras que la gran mayoría tiende a obtener máximas puntuaciones por su participación en comités públicos. La práctica del lobbying indirecto es generalizada, pero no es coincidente con una capacidad de influencia particularmente elevada. Asimismo, estas organizaciones son diversas en cuanto a su distribución interna por áreas, si bien dicha distribución puede conducir a una profesionalización excesiva.

La investigación se llevó a cabo entre abril del 2006 y mayo del 2007. El objetivo fue determinar la estructura de las poblaciones de Porites astreoides, Agaricia agaricites y Acropora palmata en crestas de arrecifes de la región noroccidental de Cuba. Los indicadores ecológicos seleccionados fueron: talla media (diámetro mayor y altura), composición por clases de tallas y parámetros de la distribución de frecuencias de tallas (moda, asimetría, curtosis, desviación estándar y coeficiente de variación). Los valores medios de diámetro y altura estimados para P. astreoides en el arrecife de Los Colorados fueron superiores (11,2 ± 0,3 cm y 6,7 ± 0,2 cm, respectivamente) a los obtenidos en Playa Baracoa y Rincón de Guanabo, mientras que los de A. agaricites (9,8 ± 0,3 cm y 6,5 ± 0,2 cm, respectivamente) y A. palmata (41,1 ± 1,9 cm y 22,2 ± 1,0 cm, respectivamente) fueron superiores en Playa Baracoa. El análisis de la composición por tallas evidenció un reclutamiento relativamente bajo en todos los arrecifes. En las tres especies predominaron las clases de tallas de adultos, lo que pudiera deberse a una mortalidad diferencial de reclutas y juveniles. Los patrones observados entre arrecifes sugieren que los agentes estresantes de origen terrestre no están ejerciendo un efecto detectable sobre los procesos demográficos de las poblaciones investigadas.

This paper describes a statistical and mathematical approach to optimize the mechanical properties of a wood plastic composite with Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) as polymeric matrix. Wood plastic composite are materials that consist of a primary continuous polymer phase, where a secondary filler dispersed phase is embedded, the filler generally is wood fibers or sawdust. The slack variable approach in mixture experiments, consist in selecting a component of the mixture as slack variable, to subsequently design and analyze the experiment in terms of the remaining components. With the experimental design information three slack variable model were fit. Using response surface graphs, we show how different compositions modify the mechanical properties of wood plastic composite. Besides, by the desirability function, the optimal formulation of the compound that simultaneously maximizing the mechanical properties of wood plastic composite, was obtained. Finally, the components proportions that provides the best tensile, flexural and compression strength are presented.

Los representantes del Orden Semaeostomae, más conocidos comúnmente como medusas, están entre los organismos más conspicuos del plancton gelatinoso. Estos cnidarios no solo tienen gran importancia ecológica, pues forman parte de las tramas tróficas del océano, sino también importancia económica y medica pues pueden afectar actividades pesqueras o turísticas y causar accidentes a los bañistas o buceadores que se pongan en contacto con estos invertebrados (Haddad Jr. et al., 2002; Morandini et al., 2005 y Varela, 2006)

Se estudiaron 10 sitios de buceo de los arrecifes de “María la Gorda” en septiembre del 2004. Se aplicó la metodología AGRRA para evaluar el estado de salud de las comunidades de coral ubicadas entre 5 y 18 metros de profundidad. Las especies más abundantes fueron Siderastrea siderea, Agaricia agaricites, Montastraea faveolata, Montastraea franksi, Montastraea annularis y Porites astreoides. El cubrimiento de sustrato por coral vivo sobrepasó el 21% solo en dos estaciones, donde se alcanzó el 30 %. La densidad de corales (mayores de 10 cm) por estación varió entre 6 y 12 colonias por unidad de muestreo. El diámetro promedio de las colonias varió entre 23 y 44 cm. Los valores de mortalidad antigua oscilaron entre 13 y 27 %, mientras que los de mortalidad reciente no superaron el 1.3 %. Los porcentajes de macroalgas carnosas fluctuaron entre el 7 y el 65 %. La densidad del erizo negro Diadema antillarum fue muy baja. El reclutamiento de corales (colonias < 2 cm) fue relativamente alto, oscilando los valores medios entre 3.7 y 6.9 reclutas/m 2. En el arrecife se aprecia cierto deterioro en la salud de los corales, no se define el disturbio que lo provoca y aparentemente no se asocia a las actividades de buceo.

El objetivo de la investigación fue determinar la estructura de las poblaciones de Acropora palmata, Porites astreoides y Agaricia agaricites forma masiva en el arrecife de Playa Baracoa (litoral norte, Provincia Habana). Para ello se evaluó la composición por tallas entre los meses de octubre y abril del 2005. Como medidas de la talla se eligieron el diámetro mayor y la altura. Se seleccionó el biotopo de cresta y se ubicaron cuatro estaciones. El tamaño de la muestra de colonias a medir se calculó fijando un intervalo de confianza del 95% equivalente a ± 20% de la media para la especie A. palmata y ± 10% para las otras dos especies. Para la especie Acropora palmata, el diámetro medio es de 60,6 ± 4,6 cm. y la altura media, 21,4 ± 1,7 cm.; para Porites astreoides, el diámetro medio es de 6,5 ± 0,3 cm. y la altura media 3,9 ± 0,2 cm. y para Agaricia agaricites, el diámetro medio es de 7,8 ± 0,3 cm. y la altura media, 4,8 ± 0,2 cm. El porciento de reclutas y juveniles encontrados en el arrecife para la especie Acropora palmata es de 32,1, para Porites astreoides es de 59,2 y para Agaricia agaricites es de 50,4. Las clases de tallas mayores representan porcientos bajos del número total de colonias. Ello pudiera estar relacionado con un proceso reproductivo exitoso, un asentamiento larval favorecido por la disponibilidad de sustrato que han creado los eventos meteorológicos recientes y la vulnerabilidad de las colonias mayores ante estos.

Applying evidence-based therapies in stroke rehabilitation plays a crucial role in this process, as they are supported by studies and results that demonstrate their effectiveness in improving functionality, such as mirror therapy (MT), cognitive therapeutic exercise (CTE), and task-oriented training. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of MT and CTE combined with task-oriented training on the functionality, sensitivity, range, and pain of the affected upper limb in patients with acute stroke. A longitudinal multicenter study recruited a sample of 120 patients with acute stroke randomly and consecutively, meeting specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. They were randomly allocated into three groups: a control group only for task-oriented training (TOT) and two groups undergoing either MT or CTE, both combined with TOT. The overall functionality of the affected upper limb, specific functionality, sensitivity, range of motion, and pain were assessed using the Fugl–Meyer Assessment Upper Extremity (FMA-UE) scale validated for the Spanish population. An initial assessment was conducted before the intervention, a second assessment after completing the 20 sessions, and another three months later. ANCOVA analysis revealed statistically significant differences between the assessments and the experimental groups compared to the control group, indicating significant improvement in the overall functionality of the upper limb in these patients. However, no significant differences were observed between the two experimental groups. The conclusion drawn was that both therapeutic techniques are equally effective in treating functionality, sensitivity, range of motion, and pain in the upper limb following a stroke.

Braconid parasitoid wasps are a widely diversified group today, while their fossil record from the Mesozoic is currently poorly known. Here, we describe Utrillabracon electropteron Álvarez-Parra & Engel, gen. et sp. nov., from the upper Albian (Lower Cretaceous) amber of San Just in the eastern Iberian Peninsula. The holotype specimen is incomplete, although the forewing and hind wing venation are well preserved. The new taxon is assigned to the subfamily †Protorhyssalinae (Braconidae) and, based on characteristics of the wing venation, seems to be closely related to Protorhyssalus goldmani Basibuyuk & Quicke, 1999 and Diorhyssalus allani (Brues, 1937), both from Upper Cretaceous ambers of North America. We discuss the taxonomy of the Cretaceous braconids, considering †Seneciobraconinae as a valid subfamily. We also comment on possible relationships within †Protorhyssalinae, although a phylogenetic analysis is necessary. Additionally, a checklist is included of braconids known from Cretaceous ambers.

Deserts are stressful environments where the living beings must acquire different strategies to survive due to the water stress conditions. From the late Albian to the early Cenomanian, the northern and eastern parts of Iberia were the location of the desert system represented by deposits assigned to the Utrillas Group, which bear abundant amber with numerous bioinclusions, including diverse arthropods and vertebrate remains. In the Maestrazgo Basin (E Spain), the late Albian to early Cenomanian sedimentary succession represents the most distal part of the desert system (fore-erg) that was characterised by an alternation of aeolian and shallow marine sedimentary environments in the proximity of the Western Tethys palaeo-coast, with rare to frequent dinoflagellate cysts. The terrestrial ecosystems from this area were biodiverse, and comprised plant communities whose fossils are associated with sedimentological indicators of aridity. The palynoflora dominated by wind-transported conifer pollen is interpreted to reflect various types of xerophytic woodlands from the hinterlands and the coastal settings. Therefore, fern and angiosperm communities abundantly grew in wet interdunes and coastal wetlands (temporary to semi-permanent freshwater/salt marshes and water bodies). In addition, the occurrence of low-diversity megafloral assemblages reflects the existence of coastal salt-influenced settings. The palaeobotanical study carried out in this paper which is an integrative work on palynology and palaeobotany, does not only allow the reconstruction of the vegetation that developed in the mid-Cretaceous fore-erg from the eastern Iberia, in addition, provides new biostratigraphic and palaeogeographic data considering the context of angiosperm radiation as well as the biota inferred in the amber-bearing outcrops of San Just, Arroyo de la Pascueta and La Hoya (within Cortes de Arenoso succesion). Importantly, the studied assemblages include Afropollis, Dichastopollenites, Cretacaeiporites together with pollen produced by Ephedraceae (known for its tolerance to arid conditions). The presence of these pollen grains, typical for northern Gondwana, associates the Iberian ecosystems with those characterising the mentioned region.

Hybotidae fly species, also known as dance flies, in Cretaceous ambers have been described from Lebanon, France, Myanmar, Russia, and Canada. Here we describe Grimaldipeza coelica gen. et sp. n., and recognize another two un-named species, in Spanish amber from the middle Albian El Soplao and lower Cenomanian La Hoya outcrops. The fore tibial gland is present in the new genus, which is characteristic of the family Hybotidae. We compare Grimaldipeza coelica gen. et sp. n. with the holotypes of Trichinites cretaceus Hennig, 1970 and Ecommocydromia difficilis Schlüter, 1978, and clarify some morphological details present in the latter two species. Further taxonomic placement beyond family of the here described new genus was not possible and remains incertae sedis within Hybotidae until extant subfamilies are better defined. We provide new paleoecological data of the hybotids, together with paleogeographical and life paleoenvironmental notes. A table with the known Cretaceous Hybotidae is provided. Furthermore, the La Hoya amber-bearing outcrop is described in detail, filling the information gap for this deposit.

During the last few years, the increasing evidence of dietary antioxidant compounds and reducing chronic diseases and the relationship between diet and health has promoted an important innovation within the baked product sector, aiming at healthier formulations. This study aims to develop a tool based on mathematical models to predict baked goods’ total antioxidant capacity (TAC). The high variability of antioxidant properties of flours based on the aspects related to the type of grain, varieties, proximal composition, and processing, among others, makes it very difficult to innovate on food product development without specific analysis. Total phenol content (TP), oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC), and ferric-reducing antioxidant power assay (FRAP) were used as markers to determine antioxidant capacity. Three Bayesian-type models are proposed based on a double exponential parameterized curve that reflects the initial decrease and subsequent increase as a consequence of the observed processes of degradation and generation, respectively, of the antioxidant compounds. Once the values of the main parameters of each curve were determined, support vector machines (SVM) with an exponential kernel allowed us to predict the values of TAC, based on baking conditions (temperature and time), proteins, and fibers of each native grain.

Pin nematodes (Paratylenchus spp.) are root parasites found worldwide. They have different life cycles and feeding habits and can damage a wide range of plants. A remarkable diversity of pin nematode species was found in soil samples from Florida and other states of the USA, Canada, and Spain. Using integrative taxonomy, two new species (Paratylenchus hawaiiensis sp. n. and P. roboris sp. n.), six valid species (Paratylenchulus acti, P. aquaticus, P. goldeni, P. paralatescens, P. minutus (=P. shenzhenensis syn. n.), and P. straeleni), and two undescribed species were identified from Florida; P. goldeni, P. hamatus, P. hamicaudatus, P. holdemani, and P. pedrami were found in California, P. minutus in Hawaii, P. goldeni in Oregon and Washington, and one new species, Paratylenchus borealis sp. n., in Alaska. Outside the USA, Paratylenchus projectus was detected in samples from Canada and Spain as well as P. holdemani and Paratylenchus sp. from Spain. The pin nematode species from Belgium and Russia identified in former studies as Paratylenchus sp. F was herein described as a new species with the name of P. borealis sp. n., using a population from Alaska. Previously reported molecular type A of P. aquaticus from Hawaii was reclassified as P. hawaiiensis sp. n., using a population from Florida. Paratylenchus roboris sp. n. from Florida has obese sedentary females with a stylet 63–71 µm long. The results of the molecular analysis of P. shenzhenensis from Florida and China indicated that it was conspecific with P. minutus from Hawaii and considered here as its junior synonym. New 26 D2–D3 expansion segments of 28S rRNA, 17 ITS rRNA, and 20 COI gene sequences were obtained in this study. Phylogenetic relationships of Paratylenchus are reconstructed using the D2–D3 of 28S rRNA, ITS rRNA, and COI gene sequences. Congruence of molecular and morphological evolution and species identification problems are discussed. Obese females were found in two major clades of Paratylenchus. The problem of reference materials is discussed, and it is proposed to make more efforts to collect topotype materials of known Paratylenchus species for molecular study.

The aim of this work was to study the physico-chemical parameters, texture, colour and sensorial characteristics of experimental cheeses from three equivalent groups of 15 multiparous goats from each of the three Canarian breeds, Majorera, Palmera and Tinerfeña, during ripening. A great influence on the milk basic composition was observed when comparing breed effect. The Palmera breed had the best milk quality characteristics with the highest percentage of protein (5.16%), fat (4.62%), and dry matter (14.75%). Tinerfeña breed had the lowest value of protein and non-fat solids whereas Majorera breed showed the minimum score for fat percentage. Most research on the topic carried out during the last decade has focused on studying the prevalence and diversity of flower-inhabiting yeasts, describing new species retrieved from floral parts and animal pollinators, and the use of select nectar yeasts as model systems to test ecological hypotheses. In this primer article, we summarize the current state of the art in floral nectar mycology and provide an overview of some research areas that, in our view, still require further attention, such as the influence of fungal volatile organic compounds on the foraging behavior of pollinators and other floral visitors, the analysis of the direct and indirect effects of nectar-inhabiting fungi on the fitness of plants and animals, and the nature and consequences of fungal-bacterial interactions taking place within flowers.

Dinosaur bonebeds with amber content, yet scarce, offer a superior wealth and quality of data on ancient terrestrial ecosystems. However, the preserved palaeodiversity and/or taphonomic characteristics of these exceptional localities had hitherto limited their palaeobiological potential. Here, we describe the amber from the Lower Cretaceous dinosaur bonebed of Ariño (Teruel, Spain) using a multidisciplinary approach. Amber is found in both a root layer with amber strictly in situ and a litter layer mainly composed of aerial pieces unusually rich in bioinclusions, encompassing 11 insect orders, arachnids, and a few plant and vertebrate remains, including a feather. Additional palaeontological data—charophytes, palynomorphs, ostracods— are provided. Ariño arguably represents the most prolific and palaeobiologically diverse locality in which fossiliferous amber and a dinosaur bonebed have been found in association, and the only one known where the vast majority of the palaeontological assemblage suffered no or low-grade pre-burial transport. This has unlocked unprecedentedly complete and reliable palaeoecological data out of two complementary windows of preservation—the bonebed and the amber—from the same site.

The Ribesalbes–Alcora Basin (Castelló Province, Spain) contains two lower Miocene units that are rich in fossils. The Unit B contains oil-shale and laminated bituminous dolomicrite related to a palaeolake, whereas the Unit C is composed of sandstone and mudstone beds from distal deltaic and shallow lacustrine environments. The La Rinconada and San Chils localities from the Unit B have yielded a fossil assemblage of plants, molluscs, arthropods, and vertebrates, while the localities from the Unit C in the Campisano ravine (Araia/Mas d’Antolino outcrop) are rich in mammalian record. Here we study a new palaeolake deposit of laminated lacustrine limestone beds in the Unit C named Foieta la Sarra-A. This new locality has provided an assemblage of charophytes, terrestrial plants, molluscs, arthropods, and teleosteans. The latter represent the only known fish record from the Ribesalbes–Alcora Basin to date. Although the specimens are generally poorly preserved, the presence of soft-body preservation due to the action of microbial mats at the lake bottom allows considering the Foieta la Sarra-A locality as a Konservat-Lagerstätte. The Foieta la Sarra-A palaeolake had a different water chemistry compared to that represented in the Unit B. Its depth was about a few metres and the water level suffered periodic fluctuations. This new locality sheds light on the palaeoenvironmental dynamics of the Ribesalbes–Alcora Basin during the early Miocene and provides a new approach to the palaeoecological reconstruction of the basin.

The importance of insects for angiosperm pollination is widely recognized. In fact, approximately 90% of all plant species benefit from animal-mediated pollination. However, only recently, a third part player in this story has been properly acknowledged. Microorganisms inhabiting floral nectar, among which yeasts have a prominent role, can ferment glucose, fructose, sucrose, and/or other carbon sources in this habitat. As a result of their metabolism, nectar yeasts produce diverse volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other valuable metabolites. Notably, some VOCs of yeast origin can influence insects’ foraging behavior, e.g., by attracting them to flowers (although repelling effects have also been reported). Moreover, when insects feed on nectar, they also ingest yeast cells, which provide them with nutrients and protect them from pathogenic microorganisms. In return, insects serve yeasts as transportation and a safer habitat during winter when floral nectar is absent. From the plant’s point of view, the result is flowers being pollinated. From humanity’s perspective, this ecological relationship may also be highly profitable. Therefore, prospecting nectar-inhabiting yeasts for VOC production is of major biotechnological interest. Substances such as acetaldehyde, ethyl acetate, ethyl butyrate, and isobutanol have been reported in yeast volatomes, and they account for a global market of approximately USD 15 billion. In this scenario, the present review addresses the ecological, environmental, and biotechnological outlooks of this three-party mutualism, aiming to encourage researchers worldwide to dig into this field.

Abstract The root-knot nematodes of the genus Meloidogyne are highly adapted, obligate plant parasites, consisting of nearly one hundred valid species, and are considered the most economically important group of plant-parasitic nematodes. Six Meloidogyne species: M. arenaria, M. hapla, M. incognita, M. microtyla, M. naasi and M. nataliei were previously reported in Michigan, USA. For this study, Meloidogyne nataliei was isolated from the grapevine Vitis labrusca from the type locality in Michigan, USA, and was characterized using isozyme analysis and ribosomal and mitochondrial gene sequences. No malate dehydrogenase activity was detected using macerate of one, five, six, seven or ten females of M. nataliei per well. However, one strong band (EST = S1; Rm: 27.4) of esterase activity was detected when using homogenates of ten egg-laying females per well. Phylogenetic analyses of sequences of the partial 18S ribosomal RNA, D2-D3 of 28S rRNA, internal transcribed spacer of rRNA, mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I genes and the cytochrome oxidase subunit II-16S rRNA intergeneric fragment from fifty-five valid Meloidogyne species and M. nataliei were conducted using Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood methods. From these results, we infer 11 distinct clades among studied species, with M. nataliei and M. indica composing a basal lineage. Seventy five percent of these species belong to seven clades within the Meloidogyne superclade. Characterization of these clades is provided and evolutionary trends within the root-knot nematodes are discussed.

Introduction and aim: The MELD score has been established as an efficient and rigorous prioritization system for liver transplant (LT). Our study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the MELD score as a system for prioritization for LT, in terms of decreasing the dropout rate in the waiting list and maintaining an adequate survival post-LT in Chile. Materials and methods: We analyzed the Chilean Public Health Institute liver transplant registry of candidates listed from October 15th 2011 to December 31st 2014. We included adult candidates (>15 years old) listed for elective cadaveric LT with a MELD score of 15 or higher. Statistical analysis included survival curves (Kaplan–Meier), log-rank statistics and multivariate logistic regression. Results: 420 candidates were analyzed. Mean age was 53.6 ± 11.8 years, and 244 were men (58%). Causes of LT included: Liver cirrhosis without exceptions (HC) 177 (66.4%); hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) 111 (26.4%); cirrhosis with non-HCC exceptions 102 (24.3%) and non-cirrhotic candidates 30 (7.2%). LT rate was 43.2%. The dropout rate was 37.6% at 1-year. Even though the LT rate was higher, the annual dropout rate was significantly higher in cirrhotic candidates (without exceptions) compared with cirrhotics with HCC, and non-HCC exceptions plus non-cirrhotic candidates (47.9%; 37.2% and 24.2%, respectively, with p = 0.004). Post-LT survival was 84% per year, with no significant differences between the three groups (p = 0.95). Conclusion: Prioritization for LT using the MELD score system has not decreased the dropout rate in Chile (persistent low donor's rate). Exceptions generate inequities in dropout rate, disadvantaging patients without exceptions.

Abstract: Autoimmune progesterone dermatitis is an uncommon, poorly recognized and under-diagnosed catamenial dermatosis associated with hypersensitivity reactions to progestagens. Most cases manifest as urticaria, eczema or erythema multiforme-like. A 26-year-old woman developed violaceous plaques on the groin and abdomen, 4 days after a spontaneous abortion resolved with uterine curettage. The lesions recurred once monthly at the same sites, mimicking a fixed drug eruption. Although the histopathology was compatible with fixed drug eruption, positive intradermal testing and symptomatic improvement after using oral contraceptive pills gave us a clue to the diagnosis.

Flowers produce an array of nutrient-rich exudates in which microbes can thrive, making them hotspots for microbial abundance and diversity. During a diversity study of yeasts inhabiting the flowers of Metrosideros polymorpha (Myrtaceae) in the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park (HI, USA), five isolates were found to represent two novel species. Morphological and physiological characterization, and sequence analysis of the small subunit ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, the D1/D2 domains of the large subunit rRNA genes, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions, and the genes encoding the largest and second largest subunits of the RNA polymerase II (RPB1 and RPB2, respectively), classified both species in the family Metschnikowiaceae, and we propose the names Candida metrosideri pro tempore sp. nov. (JK22T = CBS 16091 = MUCL 57821) and Candida ohialehuae pro tempore sp. nov. (JK58.2T = CBS 16092 = MUCL 57822) for such new taxa. Both novel Candida species form a well-supported subclade in the Metschnikowiaceae containing species associated with insects, flowers, and a few species of clinical importance. The ascosporic state of the novel species was not observed. The two novel yeast species showed elevated minimum inhibitory concentrations to the antifungal drug amphotericin B (>4 μg/mL). The ecology and phylogenetic relationships of C. metrosideri and C. ohialehuae are also discussed.

The collaborative model for learning implies students forming teams in order to reach a common goal. The objectives of this research are both exploring the impact of the collaborative model over the performance of those learners who study contents related to the formation of spokespersons for organizations; and evaluating the potential of frame analysis as a content for training in public relations. To delve into those issues, a case study exercise was administered to six groups of students of the “Training for Spokespersons” subject, consisting of analyzing the audiovisual intervention of a spokesperson talking on behalf of a strike commitee, and answering questions about target publics and frames of reference. The exercise succeeded in helping the students understand the role of emotional communication; however, they still got slightly confused about frame analysis and its link with the concept of social norm. For future research, it becomes necessary to focus on moving even more away from the classic master classes, as well as using cases that students can feel closer to their interests. With respect to frame analysis, the results encourage the teaching of more precise classifications in terms of general frames about a certain topic, and specific frames about particular situations.

This article contains information related to a recent survey of the prevalence of fecal shedding of Clostridium perfringens and C. difficile by dogs and cats attended in veterinary clinics located in the Madrid region (Spain). Specifically, we provide detailed information about the clinics that participated in the survey, the demographic and clinic characteristics of recruited animals and the genetic and phenotypic characteristics (including antimicrobial susceptibility data), of recovered bacterial isolates.

The development of a MOOC involves the implementation of a complex process of planning, design and development. This process requires the participation of different professionals and work areas. The efficiency of the production system needs to establish specific methodologies. These should address the specific characteristics of the context of development, and they must combine strategies and techniques from different areas: instructional design, audiovisual production and multimedia development. The article presents a methodological model for the production and development of audiovisual and multimedia content for MOOC, after a year of successive interactions of implementation and evaluation. This becomes a result of a procedure based on the action research methodology. The process has been carried out during the sequential development of the first five MOOCs developed for the platform URJCx Rey Juan Carlos University (Spain). The process, which is part of an overall strategy, has required the creation of dedicated professional teams and the provision of specialized resources. The working methodology has been tested by iterative processes of design, implementation (action), analysis and evaluation aimed at improving the efficiency of production processes. The interactions sequence? have defined a model of lighter production, based on the development of schemes and formal patterns both for audiovisual production and multimedia. These schemes work as general templates. Also it has improved communication flows and work among the teams involved.

En este artículo presentamos el proyecto Arenero Educativo que utiliza la tecnología de Realidad Aumentada para implementar un recurso para la enseñanza de las matemáticas y las ciencias naturales. Esta instalación usa una cámara infrarroja para leer la superficie tridimensional de la arena y después dibujar sobre ella curvas de nivel y cuerpos de agua que se transforman cuando el usuario interactúa con la arena. Describimos con detalle las nuevas posibilidades de su interfaz novedosa y su implementación técnica. Detallamos también nuestra propuesta didáctica y reflexionamos acerca de la importancia de establecer una ruta de implementación accesible. Finalmente, discutimos acerca de la importancia del MediaLab de la Universidad de Salamanca como agente dinamizador de este tipo de proyectos multidisciplinares.

In Sliding Modes control literature, a popular paradigm says that the so called “chattering-effect” (undesirable mechanical vibrations on the plant under control) can be reduced or even removed at all without affecting the control robustness. Nevertheless, results of practical implementations support that this is not necessarily true. In this work, the actual behaviour of a class of high order Sliding Modes used as the control law for a Multiple-Input Multiple-Output system is presented, where the real performance of system robustness is studied when the chattering-effect change in magnitude. In this study, to achieve the chattering reduction, the Super-Twisting algorithm is used, and the plant to control is a 3-DoF robot arm. The results of this work show that when techniques to reduce the chattering-effect are utilized, the corresponding reduction in system robustness should also be taken into account, and that achievements of theoretical concepts must be bounded when they are implemented in practical applications.

This paper deals with the morphological and molecular characterization of Kochinema farodai Baqri and Bohra, 2001, with an integrative approach. The finding of K. faroidai in California is a remarkable biogeographical novelty, as it is the first American record of the species. Molecular data herein obtained represent the first molecular study of the genus Kochinema. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations of a member of Kochinema are provided for the first time. Additionally, this contribution provides new insights into the phylogeny and taxonomy of the nematode genus Kochinema. A brief historical outline of the matter is presented. Then, the morphological pattern of the genus is revised and illustrated, the anterior position of amphids, whose opening is located on lateral lip, being its most relevant diagnostic feature. The phylogenetic analysis inferred from D2–D3 expansion segments of 28S rRNA gene shows that Kochinema clustered together with other dorylaimid species characterized by the absence of pars refringens vaginae and that it does not share a recent common ancestor with other members of the family Nordiidae. A likely polyphyly of the family Nordiidae is confirmed. Finally, an updated taxonomy of the genus is proposed, including a revised diagnosis, a list of species, a key to species identification, and a compendium of their main morphometrics and distribution data.

Palmero cheese is an artisanal dairy product from the Canary Islands (Spain), awarded with the Protected Denomination of Origin (PDO) from the European Union. It is made with raw milk from the Palmera dairy goat on La Palma island. The aim of this research covered the physicochemical and sensorial characterization of Palmero cheese along 90 days of ripening. Palmero cheeses from four cheese factories were analysed for basic physicochemical parameters, instrumental texture and colour and sensorial profile. Most of the basic composition and the texture and colour attributes of Palmero cheese changed significantly along maturation. During the 90 days of ripening an increase in hardness, fracturability and gumminess (p < 0.001) occurred while elasticity decreased simultaneously (p < 0.001). The internal lightness value decreased significantly (p < 0.001), while yellowness increased (p < 0.001) during cheese ripening. Ripening time affected six of nine sensorial texture characteristics and the entire odour and flavour parameters analysed (p < 0.001). Regarding to intravarietal comparison, in general, cheeses from the four dairy plants showed similar composition although significant differences were detected on textural, colour and sensorial characteristics.

La creación de un recurso educativo digital abierto (REDA) de acentuación en español responde a una de las dificultades básicas de los estudiantes universitarios frente al dominio de la comunicación escrita. La dinámica del proceso de creación permitió identificar la ausencia de recursos de calidad sobre acentuación y la falta de procedimientos claros y accesibles para profesores no expertos en tecnología, interesados en ofrecer recursos digitales acordes a las expectativas del estudiante de hoy. La experiencia de la creación del REDA de acentuación en español muestra una posible ruta para enfrentar retos similares

The combination of open data generated by government and the proliferation of mobile devices enables the creation of new information services and improved delivery of existing ones. Significantly, it allows citizens access to simple,quick and effective way to information. Free applications that use open data provide useful information in real time, tailored to the user experience and / or geographic location. This changes the concept of “service information”. Both the infomediary sector and citizens now have new models of production and dissemination of this type of information. From the theoretical contextualization of aspects such as processes datification of reality, mobile registration of everyday experience, or reinterpretation of the service information, we analyze the role of open data in the public sector in Spain and its application concrete in building apps based on this data sets. The findings indicate that this is a phenomenon that will continue to grow because these applications provide useful and efficient information to decision-making in everyday life.

Multi-azole resistance acquisition by Candida tropicalis after prolonged antifungal therapy in a dog with urinary candidiasis is reported. Pre- and post-azole treatment isolates were clonally related and had identical silent mutations in the ERG11 gene, but the latter displayed increased azole minimum inhibitory concentrations. A novel frameshift mutation in ERG3 was found in some isolates recovered after resistance development, so it appears unlikely that this mutation is responsible for multi-azole resistance.

Abstract: Eccrine poromas and porocarcinomas are adnexal tumors derived from the sweat duct epithelium. However, eccrine poroma is benign in nature, whilst eccrine porocarcinoma is regarded as its malignant counterpart. We report the case of a man who presented simultaneously with an eccrine poroma and eccrine porocarcinoma. Both lesions had no clear distinctive features, enhancing the need of high-level clinical suspicion together with surgical excision and histopathology for prompt diagnosis confirmation.

El Programa Institucional Eficacia Comunicativa (ECO) se implementa en la Universidad del Norte de Barranquilla, Colombia, para el desarrollo de la competencia comunicativa de todos los estudiantes. El programa incluye dos cursos básicos de español académico, un plan de acompañamiento a docentes disciplinares, actividades extracurriculares y el desarrollo de contenidos educativos digitales sobre español académico. El Programa está fundamentado en la teoría de géneros de la Escuela de Sídney. Una revisión básica del estado actual a partir de una adaptación de los niveles de evaluación de Kirkpatrick evidencia un impacto significativo en estudiantes y docentes, y permite establecer perspectivas de sostenibilidad a largo plazo. La articulación de la práctica con una base teórica sólida enmarcada en la Lingüística Sistémico-Funcional, el enfoque sociocultural de aprendizaje vigotskiano y el aprendizaje docente basado en la reflexión constituye el factor que más ha contribuido al desarrollo del programa en el tiempo.

Three new species of Aporcelaimoides from natural habitats in Vietnam are studied, described and illustrated, including line drawings, LM and/or SEM pictures. Aporcelaimoides brevistylum sp. n. is characterized by its body 1.95–2.90 mm long, lip region offset by deep constriction and 17–18 µm broad, ventral side of mural odontostyle 11–14 µm long with aperture occupying 62–71% of its length, neck 663–767 µm long, pharyngeal expansion occupying 58–66% of total neck length, uterus a simple tube 85–182 µm long, pars refringens vaginae absent, V = 55–63, tail short and rounded (34–46 µm, c = 49–76, c’ = 0.6–0.8), spicules 67–86 µm long, and one ventromedian supplement out the range of spicules. Aporcelaimoides minor sp. n. is distinguished in having body 2.09–2.61 mm long, lip region offset by deep constriction and 19–20 µm broad, mural odontostyle 14–16 µm long at its ventral side with aperture occupying 73–84% of its length, neck 579–649 µm long, pharyngeal expansion occupying 57–66% of total neck length, uterus a simple tube 44–69 µm long, pars refringens vaginae well developed, V = 48–56, female tail very short, rounded conoid or truncate (14–26 µm, c = 90–146, c’ = 0.3–0.6), and male unknown. Aporcelaimoides silvaticum sp. n. is characterized by its body 2.09–2.60 mm long, lip region offset by depression and 17–18 µm broad, mural odontostyle 11–12 µm long at its ventral side with aperture occupying 60–66% of its length, neck 597–720 µm long, pharyngeal expansion occupying 58–64% of total neck length, uterus a simple tube 128–243 µm long, pars refringens vaginae well developed, V = 58–60, tail short and rounded (27–37 µm, c = 67–94, c’ = 0.6–0.7), spicules 64–75 µm long, and two or three widely spaced ventromedian supplements bearing hiatus. The genus Aporcelaimoides is restored, its diagnosis emended, and three species of Sectonema, namely S. amazonicum, S. haguei and S. moderatum, transferred to it. An updated list of its species, a key to their identification and a tabular compendium with the most important morphometric features are also presented.

Se reportan nuevos avistamientos de águila real durante 3 años consecutivos (2007-2010) en 2 localidades de la sierra El Mechudo (El Saucito y las Tarabillas), Baja California Sur. Los avistamientos, se realizaron con cámaras-trampa y por observación directa. En BCS, los registros más recientes son de la sierra de la Laguna en el 2000. Se han detectado al menos 4 individuos diferentes, entre juveniles y adultos. La importancia de estos nuevos avistamientos reside en que por primera vez se registra la presencia del águila real en cuerpos de agua dulce.We report new sightings of Golden Eagle for 3 consecutive years (2007-2010) at 2 localities of the Sierra El Mechudo (El Saucito and Tarabillas), Baja California Sur. These sightings were recorded with camera traps and by direct observation. Most recent records from BCS are for the Sierra de la Laguna in 2000. At least 4 different individuals, both juveniles and adults, have been recorded. The importance of these new sightings is that for the first time we registered Golden Eagles infresh water wetlands.

Las masas forestales juegan un papel fundamental en el secuestro de carbono (C). Se han desarrollado numerosos métodos y modelos para estimar los reservorios y los flujos de C presentes en los ecosistemas. En este estudio se utilizó el modelo de simulación CO2FIX v.3.2 con el fin de determinar la línea base de C en un bosque de pino-encino de la Sierra Juárez, Oaxaca, México. El primer objetivo fue comparar los resultados del modelo con los resultados obtenidos mediante muestreos directos y el uso de ecuaciones alométricas. El segundo objetivo fue identificar los elementos que conforman dicha línea base de C para una posible evaluación de un nuevo manejo forestal que incluye beneficios ambientales por secuestro de C. Tras la obtención de los datos y la comparación de resultados con los estudios previos se concluyó que el modelo CO2FIX v3.2 es capaz de determinar,de manera simple y eficaz, los reservorios y los flujos de C, así como la línea base de C. Esto proporciona a las comunidades con acceso limitado a recursos económicos una herramienta capaz de evaluar la capacidad para el secuestro de C y recibir apoyo en el marco del servicio ambiental del secuestro de C.

Two new species of the genus Sectonema from natural habitats of northern Vietnam are studied. This paper includes their descriptions, measurements, line illustrations, and light microscope (LM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) pictures. Sectonema tropicum sp. nov. is characterized by a 2.56–3.24 mm long body, 19–21 μm broad lip region, odontostyle 20–21 μm long at its ventral side, 730–834 μm long neck, pharyngeal expansion occupying 52–59% of total neck length, uterus a simple tube-like structure 150–242 μm long or 1.2–2.5 times the body diameter, pars refringens vaginae present, V = 48–52, short (31–40 μm, c = 70–91, c’ = 0.5–0.6) and rounded tail, 91–97 μm long spicules, and only one weakly developed ventromedian supplement. Sectonema vietnamense sp. nov. is characterized by its slender (a = 33–49) and 2.71–4.25 mm long body, 14–16 μm broad lip region, odontostyle 8–9 μm long at its ventral side, 716–918 μm long neck, pharyngeal expansion occupying 63–67% of total neck length, uterus simple and 209–242 μm long or 2.5–2.9 times the corresponding body diameter, pars refringens vaginae absent, V = 54, short (34–39 μm, c = 70–115, c’ = 0.6–0.8) and rounded tail, 59–75 μm long spicules, and three or four irregularly spaced ventromedian supplements bearing hiatus. Both species are also characterized by their nearly continuous lip region, an atypical feature in this genus. Molecular analysis of S. tropicum sp. nov. confirms that Sectonema is a natural (monophyletic) taxon, very close to Metaporcelaimus.

La cotorra argentina (Myiopsitta monachus) es un ave de la familia Psittacidae que se distribuye de manera nativa en Sudamérica, con poblaciones asilvestradas en otros países fuera de su distribución original. En México, existen cuatro reportes publicados en revistas científicas sobre nuevos avistamientos en los estados de Querétaro, Área metropolitana del DF, Michoacán y Oaxaca, pero, a la fecha, en la parte norte del país no hay evidencia de su presencia. Para la Península de Baja California no hay registros bien documentados de su existencia, por ello reportamos por primera vez nuevos avistamientos y sitios de anidación en el poblado de Guerrero Negro, Baja California Sur, México.

En el presente trabajo se establece una aproximación al panorama actual en relación con las publicaciones e investigaciones relacionadas con la integración de las TIC en la enseñanza de las Artes Gráficas en España. Como método se ha utilizado el análisis documental, partiendo desde la perspectiva general y global del uso de las TIC en educación, tanto en Europa como en España, hasta los trabajos específicos centrados en la formación profesional y en especial las familia de las Artes Gráficas. Además, se ha llevado a cabo un análisis de los datos del Informe sobre la implantación y el uso de las tic en los centros Docentes de educación primaria y secundaria en España, y en especial los dedicados a Formación Profesional. Los diferentes documentos esenciales seleccionados, que delimitan nuestra investigación, han sido clasificados atendiendo a su carácter y tipología enmarcados dentro de los parámetros españoles, europeos y americanos. A partir de este estudio descriptivo se han identificado un conjunto de recomendaciones para la creación de modelos de implantación eficaz de las Tecnologías de la Información y la Comunicación en las enseñanzas de Grado Medio y Grado Superior de la familia profesional de Artes Gráficas en España, que muestran la necesidad que existe para este colectivo de tomar acciones concretas.

Los cuerpos de agua superficial (CAS) permanentes o efímeros (pozas, tinajas, escurrimientos, etc.) que se encuentran en depresiones del terreno, como arroyos y cañadas, son soporte fundamental para el ecosistema en zonas áridas. Mediante el uso de cámaras-trampa, en este estudio se identifican especies de vertebrados terrestres silvestres presentes en 4 sitios con agua superficial, en el extremo sur de la sierra El Mechudo, Baja California Sur, y se analiza el uso de los CAS por las especies en los periodos de actividad. En cada sitio se caracterizó el hábitat (topografía, vegetación y agua). Los 4 sitios mostraron diferencias en sus características ambientales. Se identificaron 41 especies de vertebrados terrestres (3 reptiles, 31 aves y 7 mamíferos). Se encontraron también varias especies de murciélagos que no fueron identificadas. La riqueza de especies y frecuencia de visita fue diferente en cada sitio. Con excepción de 3 especies de mamíferos, el horario de actividad fue similar en los 4 sitios. La presente investigación aporta información sobre la importancia de los CAS en zonas semiáridas, describiendo el hábitat, las especies y su comportamiento, elementos básicos para la conservación y manejo de los recursos naturales.Permanent or ephemeral water ponds (puddles, catchments, drains, and so on) located on ground depressions, such as streams and creeks, are a fundamental support for ecosystems in dry areas. This study identified the species of native terrestrial vertebrates in 4 sites in the southernmost part of the Sierra El Mechudo, B.C.S., including how such species use these bodies of water based on the periods of species activity. Habitats were characterized in 4 sites (topography, vegetation, and water sources); camera-traps were placed around water ponds from March to October 2007. The 4 sites differed in their environmental characteristics. Overall, there were 41 species of terrestrial vertebrates (3 reptiles, 31 birds, and 7 mammals), with several unidentified species of bats that were also found. Specific richness and visit (record) frequency were also different at each site. Species activity schedule was similar in the 4 sites with the exception of 3 species of mammals. This study provides important information of superficial water in semiarid areas, including description of habitat, species, and their behavior, which are basic elements for conservation and management of natural resources.
