1. How HEXACO personality traits are involved in school performance of middle school adolescents (10–14 years)

Abstract: This paper aimed at investigating the relationship between HEXACO personality traits and academic performance in two samples of Italian 10–14 years old middle-school adolescents (N = 714 and N = 1093) using Multilevel Mixed Models. The main results show that: 1) Conscientiousness and Openness to Experience were the most important predictors of school performance, followed by Honesty-Humility; 2) a modest effect was present also for eXtraversion and Emotionality; 3) these influences occurred net of the influence of gender and class and could be generalized to male and female adolescents across 6th, 7th and 8th grade; 5) Perfectionism, Diligence and Prudence within Conscientiousness, Inquisitiveness within Openness, and Sincerity within Honesty-Humility were the facets more correlated with school performance; 6) results were replicated in two studies. Results are discussed and conclusions are drawn.

Abstract: The Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, has had devastating effects on the Ukrainian population and the global economy, environment, and political order. However, little is known about the psychological states surrounding the outbreak of war, particularly the mental well-being of individuals outside Ukraine. Here, we present a longitudinal experience-sampling study of a convenience sample from 17 European countries (total participants = 1,341, total assessments = 44,894, countries with >100 participants = 5) that allows us to track well-being levels across countries during the weeks surrounding the outbreak of war. Our data show a significant decline in well-being on the day of the Russian invasion. Recovery over the following weeks was associated with an individual's personality but was not statistically significantly associated with their age, gender, subjective social status, and political orientation. In general, well-being was lower on days when the war was more salient on social media. Our results demonstrate the need to consider the psychological implications of the Russo-Ukrainian war next to its humanitarian, economic, and ecological consequences.

Abstract: Research assessing personality traits and religiosity across cultures has typically neglected variation across religious affiliations and has been limited to a small number of personality traits. This study examines the relationship between the Big Five personality traits and their facets, two theoretically distinct measures of religiosity, and twelve other personality traits across seven religious affiliations and 61 countries/regions. The proportion of participants following a religion varied substantially across countries (e.g., Indonesia = 99%; Estonia = 7%). Both measures of religiosity were related to agreeableness, conscientiousness, happiness, and fairness; however; relations with religiosity as a social axiom were stronger and less variable across religious affiliations. Additionally, personality-religiosity links were more robust in low-development, high-conflict, and collectivist nations.

4. The Role of HEXACO Personality Traits on Predicting Problematic and Risky Behaviors in Adolescents

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the role of the HEXACO personality traits in predicting emotional and behavioral problems and risky behaviors in adolescents evaluated by an external observer (parent or legal guardian). To the study’s aim, 714 adolescents were recruited from seven schools in Campania (Italy), and for each adolescent, a parent (or legal guardian) was involved to obtain an indirect measure of adolescents’ behaviors. The adolescents filled out the HEXACO-Middle School Inventory (MSI), the parents answered a set of items about emotional and behavioral problems and risky behaviors in adolescents instead. The results showed that Conscientiousness is the best predictor of youth risk behaviors, Honesty-Humility and eXtraversion are the best predictors of emotional and behavioral problems in adolescents instead. These findings extend our understanding of the relationship between HEXACO personality traits and emotional/behavioral problems and risky behaviors in young people, and further highlight the utility of Honesty-Humility, a dimension not considered in the Big Five model, in individual differences research.

5. Development and validation of an instrument to measure personality in adolescence: The HEXACO Medium School Inventory Extended (MSI-E)

Abstract: In this paper, we aimed at developing and validating a novel instrument to evaluate personality in 10-14 years old adolescents with six basic traits, with two dedicated studies. In Study 1, we generated a large pool of items (384 items) from three basic items sources, which we administered to 714 Italian adolescents. Using principal component analysis (PCA) and extension factor analysis, we selected the best eight items for each facet, and so the best 32 items for each factor, except for the Unconventionality facet of Openness to Experience (O) for which we selected the best six items. This resulted in a total of 190 items. The 190-item HEXACO-MSI had very good levels of dimensional validity and reliability, but it fell short in containing 8 items for each facet (i.e., for Unconventionality) and in balancing normal and reversed items within each facet. Therefore, in a second study we added items to the scale and verified again the dimensionality and reliability with the goal of developing a final version of the scale. In Study 2, we administered a version of the HEXACO-MSI consisting of 219 items to 1175 Italian adolescents. Using principal component analysis (PCA), we selected the best eight items for each facet equally balanced between normal and reversed items within each facet and factor. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) confirmed the six-factor structure and its invariance. The results showed that the HEXACO-MSI-E had a clear six-factor structure in adolescents, that was invariant across gender and across the three middle school classes, and was reliable. Finally, we established temporal stability of each factor in two measurements after one year. Together with the positive results of this contribution, we discussed some aspects for future studies.

6. Construct and criterion validity of the HEXACO Medium School Inventory Extended (MSI-E)

Abstract: In this cross-sectional study we aimed at: 1) validating the observer (Obs) version of HEXACO Medium School Inventory Extended (MSI-E); 2) establishing convergent and divergent construct validity of the HEXACO-MSI-E; 3) establishing criterion validity of HEXACO-MSI-E. We administered the HEXACO-MSI-E, the Big Five Questionnaire-Children (BFQ-C), the Internalizing and Externalizing scales of Youth Self Report (YSR), some items of the 2019 Middle School Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRB) and some items about adolescents’ values, beliefs, behaviors, and desired features of a possible future job to 1175 adolescents (Mage = 12.03, SD = 0.89) and the observer version of these measures (except for BFQ-C) to 854 parents or legal guardians. The factorial structure and the reliability of the Observer Report of HEXACO-MSI-E were confirmed. Convergent and divergent validity were successfully established with a version of the inventory filled out by parents. Convergent and divergent validity were also established with BFQ-C notwithstanding some only apparent anomalies. Criterion validity was established with respect to four specific groups of criteria collected in both self-report and observer form. HEXACO-MSI-E traits were more predictive with respect to self-report than to observer criteria and the majority were common. Together with the positive results of this study, implications and issues for future studies are discussed.

Abstract: We present a global experience-sampling method (ESM) study aimed at describing, predicting, and understanding individual differences in well-being during times of crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic. This international ESM study is a collaborative effort of over 60 interdisciplinary researchers from around the world in the “Coping with Corona” (CoCo) project. The study comprises trait-, state-, and daily-level data of 7490 participants from over 20 countries (total ESM measurements = 207,263; total daily measurements = 73,295) collected between October 2021 and August 2022. We provide a brief overview of the theoretical background and aims of the study, present the applied methods (including a description of the study design, data collection procedures, data cleaning, and final sample), and discuss exemplary research questions to which these data can be applied. We end by inviting collaborations on the CoCo dataset.

Abstract: People in economically advantaged nations tend to evaluate their life as more positive overall and report greater well-being than people in less advantaged nations. But how does positivity manifest in the daily life experiences of individuals around the world? The present study asked 15,244 college students from 62 nations, in 42 languages, to describe a situation they experienced the previous day using the Riverside Situational Q-sort (RSQ). Using expert ratings, the overall positivity of each situation was calculated for both nations and individuals. The positivity of the average situation in each nation was strongly related to the economic development of the nation as measured by the Human Development Index (HDI). For individuals’ daily experiences, the economic status of their nation also predicted the positivity of their experience, even more than their family socioeconomic status. Further analyses revealed the specific characteristics of the average situations for higher HDI nations that make their experiences more positive. Higher HDI was associated with situational experiences involving humor, socializing with others, and the potential to express emotions and fantasies. Lower HDI was associated with an increase in the presence of threats, blame, and hostility, as well as situational experiences consisting of family, religion, and money. Despite the increase in a few negative situational characteristics in lower HDI countries, the overall average experience still ranged from neutral to slightly positive, rather than negative, suggesting that greater HDI may not necessarily increase positive experiences but rather decrease negative experiences. The results illustrate how national economic status influences the lives of individuals even within a single instance of daily life, with large and powerful consequences when accumulated across individuals within each nation.

Abstract: We aimed at identifying personal goals related to traits in the HEXACO model, and at developing a comprehensive assessment of such goals. In Study 1 (N =231), a systematic exploratory study, goals ascribed to trait-consistent behaviors were elicited. Unique goals were identified from more than 7000 textual responses, using a combination of network analysis and expert ratings. In Study 2 (N = 512), we developed an initial assessment of such goals and examined their structure using hierarchical cluster analysis. In Study 3 (N =759), we refined the assessment of goals and investigated the relationships between goals and other relevant constructs, including traits, values, and basic motivational tendencies. The results showed that all traits reflected specific goals and motivations, albeit some traits seemed to be more imbued with goal content than others. Having available a taxonomy and assessment of personality-related goals opens new possibilities for investigating motivational personality processes.

Abstract: Recent research conducted largely in the United States suggests that most people would like to change one or more of their personality traits. Yet almost no research has investigated the degree to which and in what ways volitional personality change (VPC), or individuals' active efforts toward personality change, might be common around the world. Through a custom-built website, 13,278 college student participants from 55 countries and one of a larger country (Hong Kong, S.A.R.) using 42 different languages reported whether they were currently trying to change their personality and, if so, what they were trying to change. Around the world, 60.40% of participants reported that they are currently trying to change their personalities, with the highest percentage in Thailand (81.91%) and the lowest in Kenya (21.41%). Among those who provide open-ended responses to the aspect of personality they are trying to change, the most common goals were to increase emotional stability (29.73%), conscientiousness (19.71%), extraversion (15.94%), and agreeableness (13.53%). In line with previous research, students who are trying to change any personality trait tend to have relatively low levels of emotional stability and happiness. Moreover, those with relatively low levels of socially desirable traits reported attempting to increase what they lacked. These principal findings were generalizable around the world. Abstract: We aimed at identifying personal goals related to traits in the HEXACO model, and at developing a comprehensive assessment of such goals. In Study 1 (N =231), a systematic exploratory study, goals ascribed to trait-consistent behaviors were elicited. Unique goals were identified from more than 7000 textual responses, using a combination of network analysis and expert ratings. In Study 2 (N = 512), we developed an initial assessment of such goals and examined their structure using hierarchical cluster analysis. In Study 3 (N =759), we refined the assessment of goals and investigated the relationships between goals and other relevant constructs, including traits, values, and basic motivational tendencies. The results showed that all traits reflected specific goals and motivations, albeit some traits seemed to be more imbued with goal content than others. Having available a taxonomy and assessment of personality-related goals opens new possibilities for investigating motivational personality processes.

Abstract: Objective: The current exploratory study sought to examine dispositional optimism, or the general expectation for positive outcomes, around the world. Method: Dispositional optimism and possible correlates were assessed across 61 countries (N = 15,185; mean age = 21.92; 77% female). Mean-level differences in optimism were computed along with their relationships with individual and country-level variables. Results: Worldwide, mean optimism levels were above the midpoint of the scale. Perhaps surprisingly, country-level optimism was negatively related to gross domestic product per capita, population density, and democratic norms and positively related to income inequality and perceived corruption. However, country-level optimism was positively related to projected economic improvement. Individual-level optimism was positively related to individual well-being within every country, although this relationship was less strong in countries with challenging economic and social circumstances. Conclusions: While individuals around the world are generally optimistic, societal characteristics appear to affect the degree to which their optimism is associated with psychological well-being, sometimes in seemingly anomalous ways.

Abstract: Recent research conducted largely in the United States suggests that most people would like to change one or more of their personality traits. Yet almost no research has investigated the degree to which and in what ways volitional personality change (VPC), or individuals’ active efforts toward personality change, might be common around the world. Through a custom-built website, 13,278 college student participants from 55 countries and one of a larger country (Hong Kong, S.A.R.) using 42 different languages reported whether they were currently trying to change their personality and, if so, what they were trying to change. Around the world, 60.40% of participants reported that they are currently trying to change their personalities, with the highest percentage in Thailand (81.91%) and the lowest in Kenya (21.41%). Among those who provide open-ended responses to the aspect of personality they are trying to change, the most common goals were to increase emotional stability (29.73%), conscientiousness (19.71%), extraversion (15.94%), and agreeableness (13.53%). In line with previous research, students who are trying to change any personality trait tend to have relatively low levels of emotional stability and happiness. Moreover, those with relatively low levels of socially desirable traits reported attempting to increase what they lacked. These principal findings were generalizable around the world

Abstract: What does it mean to be happy? The vast majority of cross-cultural studies on happiness have employed a Western-origin, or "WEIRD" measure of happiness that conceptualizes it as a self-centered (or "independent"), high-arousal emotion. However, research from Eastern cultures, particularly Japan, conceptualizes happiness as including an interpersonal aspect emphasizing harmony and connectedness to others. Following a combined emicetic approach (Cheung, van de Vijver & Leong, 2011), we assessed the cross-cultural applicability of a measure of independent happiness developed in the US (Subjective Happiness Scale; Lyubomirsky & Lepper, 1999) and a measure of interdependent happiness developed in Japan (Interdependent Happiness Scale; Hitokoto & Uchida, 2015), with data from 63 countries representing 7 sociocultural regions. Results indicate that the schema of independent happiness was more coherent in more WEIRD countries. In contrast, the coherence of interdependent happiness was unrelated to a country's "WEIRD-ness." Reliabilities of both happiness measures were lowest in African and Middle Eastern countries, suggesting these two conceptualizations of happiness may not be globally comprehensive. Overall, while the two measures had many similar correlates and properties, the self-focused concept of independent happiness is "WEIRD-er" than interdependent happiness, suggesting cross-cultural researchers should attend to both conceptualizations.

Abstract: Objective: The current study seeks to replicate and extend principal findings reported in The World at 7:00, a project that examined the psychological experience of situations in 20 countries. Method: Data were collected from participants in 62 countries (N = 15,318), recruited from universities by local collaborators to complete the study via a custom-built website using 42 languages. Results: Several findings of the previous study were replicated. The average reported situational experience around the world was mildly positive. The same countries tended to be most alike in reported situational experience (r =.60) across the two studies, among the countries included in both. As in the previous study, the homogeneity of reported situational experience was significantly greater within than between countries, although the difference was small. The previously reported exploratory finding that negative aspects of situations varied more across countries than positive aspects did not replicate. Correlations between aspects of reported situational experience and country-level average value scores, personality, and demographic variables were largely similar between the two studies. Conclusion: The findings underscore the importance of cross-cultural situational research and the need to replicate its results, and highlight the complex interplay of culture and situational experience.

16. The HEXACO-Middle School Inventory (MSI): A Personality Inventory for Children and Adolescents

Abstract: We developed and validated a novel measure, the 6-factor personality HEXACO-Middle School Inventory (MSI). We started with a pool of 16 items for each of the six dimensions of the HEXACO. In Study 1, we administered the HEXACO-MSI to 1,089 Italian children and the Observer version to their parents. Using principal component analyses (PCA) and extension factor analysis (EFA), we selected the best eight items for each dimension. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) confirmed the 6-factor dimensionality and its invariance. Internal consistency of each dimension was adequate. Convergent and divergent validity were successfully established with a version of the scale filled by parents. Convergent validity was also established with the Big Five Questionnaire Children (BFQ-Children) whereas divergent validity was less clearcut. Conscientiousness, Honesty-Humility, and eXtraversion demonstrated predictive validity of school marks (criterion validity). In Study 2 (N = 317), we replicated dimensionality, internal consistency, and established test-retest reliability of each dimension in two measurements at a 1 month distance. The HEXACO-MSI showed a clear personality structure organized in six traits, and evidence of predictive validity of relevant school criteria particularly via Conscientiousness, Honesty-Humility, and eXtraversion.

Abstract: The HEXACO Personality Inventory–Revised (HEXACO–PI–R) has become one of the most heavily applied measurement tools for the assessment of basic personality traits. Correspondingly, the inventory has been translated to many languages for use in cross-cultural research. However, formal tests examining whether the different language versions of the HEXACO–PI–R provide equivalent measures of the 6 personality dimensions are missing. We provide a large-scale test of measurement invariance of the 100-item version of the HEXACO–PI–R across 16 languages spoken in European and Asian countries (N = 30,484). Multigroup exploratory structural equation modeling and confirmatory factor analyses revealed consistent support for configural and metric invariance, thus implying that the factor structure of the HEXACO dimensions as well as the meaning of the latent HEXACO factors is comparable across languages. However, analyses did not show overall support for scalar invariance; that is, equivalence of facet intercepts. A complementary alignment analysis supported this pattern, but also revealed substantial heterogeneity in the level of (non)invariance across facets and factors. Overall, results imply that the HEXACO–PI–R provides largely comparable measurement of the HEXACO dimensions, although the lack of scalar invariance highlights the necessity for future research clarifying the interpretation of mean-level trait differences across countries.

Abstract: The HEXACO model consists of six dimensions of personality: Honesty-Humility (H), Emotionality (E), eXtraversion (X), Agreeableness (A), Conscientiousness (C) and Openness to experience (O). Several studies in literature have shown that observer ratings of personality traits were strong predictors of job performance and academic performance. In this study we evaluated the personality traits of adolescents using the HEXACO-Middle School Inventory (MSI) and the Observer form of it. The aim was establishing if the observer HEXACO-MSI personality traits predict academic performance beyond the same self-report traits. Participants were 1089 children and 1089 Observers. The results showed that ratings by observer add something more to the self-report evaluations. The observer HEXACO-MSI personality traits predict scholastic performance beyond the same self-report traits. Parents or caregivers provide an evaluation that can complement the one provided by the adolescents themselves.

Abstract: What does it mean to be happy? The vast majority of cross-cultural studies on happiness have employed a Western-origin, or “WEIRD” measure of happiness that conceptualizes it as a self-centered (or “independent”), high-arousal emotion. However, research from Eastern cultures, particularly Japan, conceptualizes happiness as including an interpersonal aspect emphasizing harmony and connectedness to others. Following a combined emic-etic approach (Cheung, van de Vijver & Leong, 2011), we assessed the cross-cultural applicability of a measure of independent happiness developed in the US (Subjective Happiness Scale; Lyubomirsky & Lepper, 1999) and a measure of interdependent happiness developed in Japan (Interdependent Happiness Scale; Hitokoto & Uchida, 2015), with data from 63 countries representing 7 sociocultural regions. Results indicate that the schema of independent happiness was more coherent in more WEIRD countries. In contrast, the coherence of interdependent happiness was unrelated to a country’s “WEIRD-ness.” Reliabilities of both happiness measures were lowest in African and Middle Eastern countries, suggesting these two conceptualizations of happiness may not be globally comprehensive. Overall, while the two measures had many similar correlates and properties, the self-focused concept of independent happiness is “WEIRD-er” than interdependent happiness, suggesting cross-cultural researchers should attend to both conceptualizations.

Abstract: The HEXACO model consists of six dimensions of personality: Honesty-Humility (H), Emotionality (E), eXtraversion (X), Agreeableness (A), Conscientiousness (C) and Openness to experience (O). Several studies in literature have shown that observer ratings of personality traits were strong predictors of job performance and academic performance. In this study we evaluated the personality traits of adolescents using the HEXACO-Middle School Inventory (MSI) and the Observer form of it. The aim was establishing if the observer HEXACO- MSI personality traits predict academic performance beyond the same self-report traits. Participants were 1089 children and 1089 Observers. The results showed that ratings by observer add something more to the self-report evaluations. The observer HEXACO-MSI personality traits predict scholastic performance beyond the same self-report traits. Parents or caregivers provide an evaluation that can complement the one provided by the adolescents themselves.

Mean-level differences in optimism were computed along with their relationships with individual and country-level variables.ResultsWorldwide, mean optimism levels were above the midpoint of the scale. Perhaps surprisingly, country-level optimism was negatively related to gross domestic product per capita, population density, and democratic norms and positively related to income inequality and perceived corruption. However, country-level optimism was positively related to projected economic improvement. Individual-level optimism was positively related to individual well-being within every country, although this relationship was less strong in countries with challenging economic and social circumstances.ConclusionsWhile individuals around the world are generally optimistic, societal characteristics appear to affect the degree to which their optimism is associated with psychological well-being, sometimes in seemingly anomalous ways.

Abstract: Impulsivity is a multifaceted construct particularly relevant for understanding a wide variety of behaviors, especially risky behaviors. A recent conceptualization of impulsivity identifies three impulsivity factors—pervasive influence of feelings, feelings trigger action, and lack of follow-through—that have been shown to predict different behaviors. In this contribution, we examine the psychometric properties of an Italian version of such a three-factor model on a relatively large sample (N = 845). Moreover, on a subsample (n = 766) we determined whether specific dimensions of impulsivity are related to a series of risky behaviors, assessed 3 weeks later, by testing the predictive validity of the multidimensional inventory also in comparison with a standard measure of personality (HEXACO). An exploratory structural equation model confirmed the original 3-dimension structure and showed that the Italian adaptation has satisfactory psychometric properties. Convergent validity with the HEXACO dimensions was established. Furthermore, only the factors feelings trigger action and lack of follow-through, not pervasive influence of feelings, predicted risky behaviors. Findings provide a clear support to the 3-factor model of impulsivity and demonstrate its usefulness for a better comprehension of risky behaviors.

Abstract: Objectives. This contribution aims at investigating the differential relations between BPD traits, different components of rejection sensitivity, and various aspects of impulsivity. Methods. Six hundred and seventy-six University students completed a series of measures including the BPD checklist, different scales related to impulsivity and a rejection sensitivity questionnaire, and after two weeks a self-report of aggressive and risk behaviors. Based on the BPD traits, we selected the first (low BPD) and last (high BPD) quartile resulting in a sample of 343 (173 women, M age = 22.62, SD = 3.55). Results. A series of mediation and moderation analyses showed specific relations between BPD traits, different facets of impulsivity (i.e., triggering action vs. pervasiveness of emotions), the three aspects of rejection sensitivity (expectations, angry and anxious emotions), and aggressive and risk behaviors. Conclusions. Results are discussed in the perspective of the relation between BPD traits and problematic behaviors.

29. Relationship between body temperature and neurological outcome in patients with acute brain injury: systematic review of clinical evidence (06AP03-11)

Abstract: Background and Goal of Study: Temperature alterations in neurocritical care setting are common and have striking effect on brain metabolism leading or exacerbating neuronal injury. Fever (T >38,3°C) also negatively impact on acute brain injury (ABI) patients outcome. Conclusive evidence linking temperature control to improved outcome is still lacking. Aim of this review article is to evaluate the relationship between changes in body temperature in ABI and outcome. Materials and Methods: A literature search of 2 medical database was accomplished: PubMed Medline. Only complete studies (no abstracts), published in English in peer-reviewed journals were included. Two authors (M.P and P.S) independently screened and assessed titles, abstracts, and the full-text papers, using inclusion and exclusion criteria. A total of 32401 papers were screened and 32354 were excluded. We present 47 articles into 5 subchapters: mixed acute brain injury (7), brain trauma (6), intracranial hemorrhage (5), subarachnoid hemorrhage (12); ischemic stroke (17). Results and Discussion: ABI: fever correlates with increased inhospital mortality and functional outcome increasing brain metabolism and reducing blood flow. Brain trauma: fever in the first 48 hours after trauma did not predict mortality. Both the degree and duration of early post-trauma hyperthermia were strongly related with outcome.Intracranial hemorrhage: fever determines prognosis. Also subacute fever in large volume hematoma is a driver of neurological deterioration. Subarachnoid hemorrhage: the impact of fever on poor outcome is related to cerebral inflammatory response initiated at the time of aneurysm rupture, increased rate of vasospasm and delayed ischemic neurological deficits (DIND), increased ICP related to metabolic distress. Ischemic stroke: delayed hyperthermia is adverse associated with long-term outcomes and mortality compared with early period after an ischemic stroke. In patients treated with recanalization the role of hyperthermia on outcome is still controversial. Conclusion(s): Fever, infectious or central, is strongly correlated with poor neurological and functional outcome. Optimal patient temperature management and optimal method to recognise and treat infections in absence of fever remain still to define. Abstract: We correlated the scales of the HEXACO Personality Inventory (HEXACO-PI) with adjective scale markers of personality factors previously obtained in indigenous lexical studies of personality structure in the Italian, Dutch, and English languages. Self-ratings were obtained from samples of 327 Italian, 161 Dutch, and 214 English-speaking Canadian participants. Results showed that each of the six HEXACO variables-including Honesty-Humility-correlated strongly with its hypothesized six-factor adjective scale counterpart in all three languages. In each case, convergent correlations were substantially stronger than discriminant correlations. Because the HEXACO model was developed without prior knowledge of the indigenous Dutch and English lexical factors, the results suggest that the HEXACO model of personality structure can be extended to the personality lexicons of those languages. © 2006 Elsevier Inc. Abstract: Alkaline (pI 8·6–7·5) and neutral (pI 7·0–6·0) isoforms of human TSH have been isolated from a highly purified intrapituitary preparation by isoelectric focusing and compared for their respective actions on thyroid cell proliferation. Both TSH isoforms displayed the same ability to bind to porcine thyroid membranes as the original hormone preparation, indicating a similar recognition at the receptor sites. Alkaline forms showed a higher potency in inducing either cyclic AMP (cAMP) production or [3H]thymidine incorporation in FRTL-5 cells (half-maximal effective doses (ED50 values)=0·25 and 0·29 nm respectively) compared with their neutral counterparts (ED50 values=0·66 and 0·70 nm respectively). Increasing the concentration of alkaline forms in the presence of a half-maximal concentration of neutral TSH resulted in a profound inhibition of cell growth without a significant change in cAMP. Conversely, increasing the amount of neutral forms in the presence of a half-maximal dose of alkaline TSH resulted in an additive response for cAMP production but not in cell proliferation. To assess whether glycosylation might be responsible for the variation in hormone action, both alkaline and neutral TSH isoforms were tested for recognition of their carbohydrate chains by concanavalin A (Con A) and ricin. No major difference was found in binding to Con A, indicating that the contribution of carbohydrates to changes in hormone pI was not related to core branching. Very few galactose residues were accessible in either hormone fraction since little binding to ricin was observed. Isoelectric focusing of TSH forms before and after neuraminidase treatment revealed that neutral forms had a higher sialic acid content than alkaline TSH. In conclusion, the current findings show that TSH isoforms differentially affect cAMP production and cell growth. TSH fractions with a high sialic acid content and a low mitogenic activity behave as antagonists to the more active forms for cell proliferation. It is suggested that physiological control of TSH action at the thyroid gland may reside in the respective amounts of various TSH forms which, once bound to their receptor, can induce variable activation of post-receptor events while controlling cell proliferation.

Afterwards, both hardware and software solutions have been implemented and validated by using a living laboratory approach. Finally, the set-up of a first working prototype involving six built-in-lab NF antennas has been completed and tested. Abstract: The HEXACO Personality Inventory–Revised (HEXACO–PI–R) has become one of the most heavily applied measurement tools for the assessment of basic personality traits. Correspondingly, the inventory has been translated to many languages for use in cross-cultural research. However, formal tests examining whether the different language versions of the HEXACO–PI–R provide equivalent measures of the 6 personality dimensions are missing. We provide a large-scale test of measurement invariance of the 100-item version of the HEXACO–PI–R across 16 languages spoken in European and Asian countries (N = 30,484). Multigroup exploratory structural equation modeling and confirmatory factor analyses revealed consistent support for configural and metric invariance, thus implying that the factor structure of the HEXACO dimensions as well as the meaning of the latent HEXACO factors is comparable across languages. However, analyses did not show overall support for scalar invariance; that is, equivalence of facet intercepts. A complementary alignment analysis supported this pattern, but also revealed substantial heterogeneity in the level of (non)invariance across facets and factors. Overall, results imply that the HEXACO–PI–R provides largely comparable measurement of the HEXACO dimensions, although the lack of scalar invariance highlights the necessity for future research clarifying the interpretation of mean-level trait differences across countries.

Abstract: Abstract. We developed and validated a novel measure, the 6-factor personality HEXACO-Middle School Inventory (MSI). We started with a pool of 16 items for each of the six dimensions of the HEXACO. In Study 1, we administered the HEXACO-MSI to 1,089 Italian children and the Observer version to their parents. Using principal component analyses (PCA) and extension factor analysis (EFA), we selected the best eight items for each dimension. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) confirmed the 6-factor dimensionality and its invariance. Internal consistency of each dimension was adequate. Convergent and divergent validity were successfully established with a version of the scale filled by parents. Convergent validity was also established with the Big Five Questionnaire – Children (BFQ-Children) whereas divergent validity was less clear-cut. Conscientiousness, Honesty-Humility, and eXtraversion demonstrated predictive validity of school marks (criterion validity). In Study 2 ( N = 317), we replicated dimensionality, internal consistency, and established test-retest reliability of each dimension in two measurements at a 1 month distance. The HEXACO-MSI showed a clear personality structure organized in six traits, and evidence of predictive validity of relevant school criteria particularly via Conscientiousness, Honesty-Humility, and eXtraversion.

Abstract: People in economically advantaged nations tend to evaluate their life as more positive overall and report greater well-being than people in less advantaged nations. But how does positivity manifest in the daily life experiences of individuals around the world? The present study asked 15,244 college students from 62 nations, in 42 languages, to describe a situation they experienced the previous day using the Riverside Situational Q-sort (RSQ). Using expert ratings, the overall positivity of each situation was calculated for both nations and individuals. The positivity of the average situation in each nation was strongly related to the economic development of the nation as measured by the Human Development Index (HDI). For individuals’ daily experiences, the economic status of their nation also predicted the positivity of their experience, even more than their family socioeconomic status. Further analyses revealed the specific characteristics of the average situations for higher HDI nations that make their experiences more positive. Higher HDI was associated with situational experiences involving humor, socializing with others, and the potential to express emotions and fantasies. Lower HDI was associated with an increase in the presence of threats, blame, and hostility, as well as situational experiences consisting of family, religion, and money. Despite the increase in a few negative situational characteristics in lower HDI countries, the overall average experience still ranged from neutral to slightly positive, rather than negative, suggesting that greater HDI may not necessarily increase positive experiences but rather decrease negative experiences. The results illustrate how national economic status influences the lives of individuals even within a single instance of daily life, with large and powerful consequences when accumulated across individuals within each nation. Abstract: Objectives: The primary objective of this study was to compare the estimates of Problematic Internet Use (PIU) from 14 countries around the world, considering gender. The second objective was to explore the relationships between PIU and personality-related variables (pathological personality traits, defense mechanisms, coping strategies, and self-esteem). Materials and methods: Our total sample consisted of 7726 participants (30.8% male, n = 2378), aged between 18 and 86 years old (M = 25.55; SD = 9.8). Recruited online, they completed several scales about their Internet use, defense mechanisms and coping strategies, self-esteem, and pathological personality traits. Results: The PIU accounted for between 20.5% and 75% of participants using the PIUQ-9, while “self-perception” of PIU with a single item revealed estimates from 2% to 60.1%, with gender differences. Systematically, PIU significantly correlated with two variables: borderline personality traits (from .09 at P < .05 to .42 at P < .01) and immature defense mechanisms (from .13 to .42 at P < .01). Dependent, avoidant, narcissistic, histrionic, and antisocial personality traits were positive predictors of PIU and self-esteem, paranoid and schizoid personalities were negative predictors. Conclusions: This research highlights the many cross-cultural differences. Its design also allows for a better understanding of gender differences.

Abstract: One third of humans' life is spent at work, therefore, the last decades have seen an increasing interest of companies in guaranteeing safety and security to employees in their plants, offices and industries. One of the paradigms that has mostly contributed to the transformation of the interest into real interventions is the Internet of Things that, thanks to its multitude of connected devices have enhanced various daily employees' routines and activities. Although different solutions have already been proposed to this aim they are usually focused on verifying the operation of the entire industrial plant without any specific attention to the respect of 'micro'-measures, like the closure of a gate. In this paper we propose a modular architecture, designed within the SENERGY Project, with the aim of supporting the energizing and de-energizing of a set of industrial machines and guaranteeing, at the same time, the safety of workers in their maintenance duties. Specifically, the paper is focused on the exploitation of a remote device controllable through a 2.4 Ghz radio interface to both monitor the respect of specific safety measures and promptly intervene in case of necessity. A prototype is implemented through a commercial fast-prototyping device used to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed solution and open up to future works.

Abstract: One of the main concerns of the last century is regarding the air pollution and its effects caused on human health. Its impact is particularly evident in cities and urban areas where governments are trying to mitigate its effects. Although different solutions have been already proposed, citizens continue to report bad conditions in the areas in which they live. This paper proposes a solution to support governments in monitoring the city pollution through the combination of user feedbacks/reports and real-time data acquired through dedicated mobile IoT sensors dynamically re-located by government officials to verify the reported conditions of specific areas. The mobile devices leverage on dedicated sensors to monitor the air quality and capture main roads traffic conditions through machine learning techniques. The system exposes a mobile application and a website to support the collection of citizens’ reports and show gathered data to both institutions and end-users. A proof-of-concept of the proposed solution has been prototyped in a medium-sized university campus. Both the performance and functional validation have demonstrated the feasibility and the effectiveness of the system and allowed the definition of some lessons learned, as well as future works.

Abstract: Recently, different solutions leveraging Internet of Things (IoT) technologies have been adopted to avoid accidents in agricultural working environments. As an example, heavy vehicles, e.g., tractors or excavators, have been upgraded with remote controls. Nonetheless, the community continues to encourage discussions on safety issues. In this framework, a localization system installed on remote-controlled farm machines (RCFM) can help in preventing fatal accidents and reduce collision risks. This paper presents an innovative system that exploits passive UHF-RFID technology supported by commercial BLE Beacons for monitoring and preventing accidents that may occur when ground-workers in RCFM collaborate in outdoor agricultural working areas. To this aim, a modular architecture is proposed to locate workers, obstacles and machines and guarantees the security of RCFM movements by using specific notifications for ground-workers prompt interventions. Its main characteristics are presented with its main positioning features based on passive UHF-RFID technology. An experimental campaign discusses its performance and determines the best configuration of the UHF-RFID tags installed on workers and obstacles. Finally, system validation demonstrates the reliability of the main components and the usefulness of the proposed architecture for worker safety.

Abstract: Sarcopenia, defined as the progressive loss of mass and muscular function, is an important public health problem with significant economic and social consequences. The implementation of effective preventive and therapeutic interventions is a major challenge due to the increasing number of elderly people suffering from this syndrome and its debilitating complications. The diagnosis of sarcopenia requires the measurement of muscle mass and strength, and physical performance. Each evaluation method has significant limitations in terms of sensitivity and/or specificity. The goal of this work is to develop an integrated technological system, consisting of measuring devices, including mobile and wearable devices, interfacing with a data collection and processing software system, for clinical monitoring and management of the analyzed case studies. The system has been designed to both preventive (early diagnosis) and monitoring purposes of the patient’s condition over time. The diagnosis will support medical personnel in identifying appropriate interventions to prevent or reduce sarcopenia, which can be communicated via apps on smartphones to patients and caregivers, and monitored by medical personnel.

Abstract: This study examined (a) differences in estimates of Problematic Mobile Phone Use (PMPU) in adults across 14 countries worldwide and (b) whether personality and psychopathology variables predict PMPU. A sample of 7531 adults (69.6% women; mean age 25.7, SD = 9.9) completed an online survey about PMPU, defense mechanisms, coping strategies, self-esteem, pathological personality traits, and depressive symptoms. The overall mean PMPU score was 104.3 (range 27–270) and 28.1% of the participants self-reported PMPU. Women had significantly higher PMPU overall. Consistent predictors of increased PMPU in the overall sample were younger age, female gender, more hours spent on mobile phone, coping strategies, immature and autistic defenses, depression, and six personality disorders. Significant differences across countries were found in means, self-reported rates, and predictors of PMPU (hours spent, dependent personality, depression, and immature defense were common). Findings pave the way for evidence-based prevention and policy efforts at the public health level.

Abstract: Bluetooth is the most widely used short-range wireless technology today. It is present in many ubiquitous devices such as tablet, personal computers, smartphones, speakers, headphones, smartwatches, to name a few. It is also used as communication protocol in many medical devices and smart home devices. In addition, its unique broadcast feature makes it a leading choice in the beacon market. Bluetooth, especially the low-energy version, is also competing in the Internet of Things field where it is included in most so-called smart things. Furthermore, with the introduction of the Bluetooth Mesh standard, it has found space in even more Internet of Things products and applications. Bluetooth mesh can solve the problems of large-scale network systems, among which building automation is a good example. In this paper, the role of the Bluetooth Mesh Networking in Internet of Things applications is discussed, and an example of application of this emerging technology in the field of building automation is shown through the use of a commercial developer kit.

Abstract: Backyard chicken rearing is very lucrative for low-income families and unemployed individuals because of the high-quality protein in chicken meat and its popularity in many households. It is widespread especially in developing countries in Southern Africa, however, often, farmers can incur losses due to unpredictable weather conditions that can adversely affect the health and growth of the birds and consequently the quality of the produced meat. Chicken rearing is also time-consuming and labor intensive, factors that can cause inefficiency and low productivity. IoT enabling technologies could significantly improve profitability and reduce production cost by minimizing time consumption and manual labor requirements. However, many available on-market technologies enabling smart poultry farming like IoT capable automated environmental monitoring and actuating systems are expensive and therefore not attractive to small scale backyard farmers. This paper describes an innovative modular architecture based on fast prototyping and low-cost components to monitor and control the environmental conditions inside chicken coops as well as keep track of food and water delivery. The proposed architecture consists of a network of sensors, a local gateway, local actuators, a cloud service, and a web application and a mobile app that act as dashboards for data visualization and commands input. With the aim of demonstrating the feasibility of the architecture, an initial prototype was implemented and tested in a real situation within a farm in Southern Africa demonstrating the effectiveness of the system and highlighting the important and useful contribution that fast-prototyping devices, tools and technologies can bring to the sector.
