On October 3, 2022, at the age of 43, the leading researcher of the Arthropod Laboratory of the Paleontological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Biological Sciences Daniil Sergeevich Aristov (Figs 1, 2) died suddenly. He was born on January 27, 1979 in the city of Perm (former USSR) in a family of scientists. His father, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Sergey Nikolayevich Aristov, worked as a chief researcher at the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and his mother, Tatyana Aleksandrovna Aristova, was a linguist engineer and was engaged in scientific translation. As a child, Daniel was interested in biology, read a lot of popular science literature, and his favorite author was Gerald Malcolm Durrell. Daniil was a creative person: while studying at school, he went to the children’s painting studio and the creative workshop “Woodcarving” and participated with his works in exhibitions in Perm and other cities of Russia.

The new grylloblattid family Aristoviidae Storozhenko & Gröhn fam. nov., with the type genus and species Aristovia daniili Storozhenko & Gröhn gen. et sp. nov., is described from the lowermost Cenomanian amber (Hukawng Valley, Kachin State, northern Myanmar). The new family is similar to the Permian-Triassic family Megakhosaridae and the Permian-Jurassic Blattogryllidae but differs from both by the shape of pronotum and wing venation. Aristoviidae fam. nov. is also similar to the extant family Grylloblattidae in body structure, but can easily be distinguished from it by the presence of ocelli, large compound eyes and wings, as well as the lack of the transverse furrow which separates the anterior part of pronotum from its posterior part. The phylogenetic relationships between families Megakhosaridae, Blattogryllidae, Grylloblattidae, and a new family are briefly discussed.

An annotated list of 42 species in 26 genera and four families of Orthoptera recorded from Beringia (Northeast Yakutia, Chukotka, Magadan region, and Kamchatka in Russia, Alaska in USA, Yukon and the Northwestern Territories in Canada) is given. The distribution of species is clarified. The exchange of orthopteran faunas between Asia and America by the Bering Land Bridge in Pleistocene was strongly limited. The only three species, Tetrix subulata (Linnaeus, 1761), Melanoplus frigidus (Boheman, 1846), and Stethophyma grossum (Linnaeus, 1758), are recorded from both Asian and American parts. The orthopteran fauna of Beringia is not original. Majority of Beringian species are widespread throughout either Asia or North America. There are only four endemic grasshoppers, namely two Asian subspesies, Melanoplus frigidus kamtchatkae (Sjosted, 1935) and Aeropedellus variegatus gelidus Mistshenko, 1951, and two American species, A. arcticus Hebard, 1935 and Bruneria yukonensis Vickery, 1969. Composition of the regional faunas is briefly discussed. The monotypic genus Bohemanella Ramme, 1951 is again considered as a synonym of Melanoplus Stål, 1873, where a type species of the former genus, Melanoplus frigidus (Boheman, 1846) comb. resurr., forming its own species group.

The grasshopper genus Podismopsis Zubowsky, 1900 consists of 39 species distributed in Europe (Switzerland, Austria, Montenegro, and Romania), Russia (European part, Siberia, Far East), Mongolia, China, Korea, and Japan (Zubowsky, 1900; Lu et al., 2011; Storozhenko, 2021; Cigliano et al., 2021). One of them, Podismopsis gynaemorpha Ikonnikov, 1911, was described from Evseevka village (Russia, Primirskii krai) based on two males (Ikonnikov, 1911). Majority of types of the species described by Ikonnikov are deposited in the collection of the Zoological Museum of the Moscow State University (Storozhenko, 1990) while a part of type specimens are stored in the collections of the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg. I carefully examined both these collections and found that the syntypes of Podismopsis gynaemorpha are lost. Here the neotype of this species is designated, described and illustrated for stability of nomenclature and according to Article 75 of the Code (ICZN, 1999).

The species composition of the genus Epitettix (Tetrigidae: Cladonotinae) is discussed. The differential diagnosis of the genus is given. New synonymies are proposed: Epitettix Hancock, 1907 = Vaotettix Podgornaja, 1986, syn. nov., = Pseudepitettix Zheng, 1995, syn. nov. Two new taxa are described, namely Epitettix mikhailovi sp. nov. from Vietnam (Gia Lai Province) and Epitettix punctatus montanus subsp. nov. from Malaysia (Sabah, North Borneo). Seven new combinations are established: Epitettix guibeiensis (Zheng et Jiang, 1995), comb. nov., E. hainanensis (Deng, 2020), comb. nov., E. linaoshanensis (Liang et Jiang, 2004), comb. nov., E. nigritibis (Zheng et Jiang, 2000), comb. nov., E. pimkarnae (Storozhenko et Dawwrueng, 2014), comb. nov., E. strictivertex (Deng, 2020), comb. nov., and E. parallelus (Podgornaja, 1986), comb. nov. The unknown male of the latter species is also described and illustrated.

The Recent webspinners (Embiida = Embioptera) comprise a small order of insects; there are about 400 species distributed mainly in tropical and subtropical regions (Miller et al., 2012). They are gregarious, living subsocially in galleries of fine silk which they spin from glands on their forelegs (Edgerly et al., 2002). The webspinner lineage is traceable back via Middle Cretaceous Sorellembiidae, Jurassic Sinembiidae and Late Permian–Triassic Alexarasniidae to the Early–Middle Permian Atactophlebiidae (Engel & Grimaldi, 2006; Huang & Nel, 2009; Shcherbakov, 2015).

Incolacridinae is considered as a separate subfamily, not as a tribe of subfamily Catantopinae. It consists of four genera: Incolacris C. Willemse, 1932, stat. resurr., Stolzia C. Willemse, 1930, Bettotania C. Willemse, 1933, and Asymmetritania gen. nov. (type species: Stolzia vietnamensis Storozhenko, 2020). New combinations are proposed: Incolacris jianfengensis (Zheng et Ma, 1989), comb. nov., Asymmetritania asymmetrica (Ingrisch, 1989), comb. nov., and A. vietnamensis (Storozhenko, 2020), comb. nov. The diagnosis of subfamily and genera, a key to genera and an annotated list of the species of Incolacridinae are also given.

The phasmid genus Ramulus Saussure, 1862 belongs to the nominotypical tribe of subfamily Clitumninae of the Phasmatidae. This genus consists of 159 species distributed in India (21 species), Sri Lanka (6 species), Bhutan (1 species), Myanmar (6 species), Thailand (1 species), Vietnam (12 species), Malaysia (4 species from Peninsular part and Borneo), Indonesia (18 species from Java, Sumatra, Borneo, Sulawesi, and Key islands), the Philippines (3 species), China including Taiwan (74 species), Japan (1 species), Korea (1 species), and Russia (1 species) (Brock et al., 2021). Three phasmid species have been described in the genus Baculum Saussure, 1861 from the Russian Far East, Korea and North-East China respectively (Bey-Bienko, 1960; Kwon et al., 1992; Chen & He, 1994) and later transferred to the genus Ramulus (Otte & Brock, 2005). As a result of detailed examination of the type specimens of Ramulus ussurianus (Bey-Bienko, 1960), additional material and descriptions of these species, it became clear that specimens from Russia, Korea and North-East China are conspecific.

The genus Celebesia Bolívar, 1917 consists of four species endemic to Sulawesi Island, namely C. acuticerca C. Bolívar, 1917, C. ferruginata (Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1898), C. heinrichi Ramme, 1941, and C. linduensis Storozhenko, sp. nov. Distribution of species is clarified and an updated key to the species of Celebesia is given. Male genitalia of this genus is described and illustrated for the first time. The genus Pyrgophistes Key, 1992 is transferred from the tribe Catantopini to Mesambriini and a new synonymy is proposed: Mesambriini Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1893 = Pyrgophistina Key, 1993, syn. nov.

The monotypic genus Hancockitettix Storozhenko et Pushkar, gen. nov. (type species Hancockitettix humeratus Storozhenko et Pushkar, sp. nov.) from the Malay Peninsula is described. A new genus belongs to the subfamily Cladonotinae. It resembles the genera Hancockella Uvarov, 1940 from India and Austrohancockia Gunther, 1938 from China, Taiwan, Japan and Vietnam in the general body appearance, in the large lobules on the upper and lower margins of the fore and mid femora, and in the relatively narrow scutellum, but differs from them by the presence of fully developed tegmen, hind wing and tegminal sinus, by the triangular plate-like projected shoulder of pronotum, and by the considerable distance between the most outstanding parts of shoulders which exceeds the pronotum lobe width (in other mentioned genera the hind wing and tegminal sinus are absent, the tegmen is absent or rudimentary, lateral side of shoulder is broadly rounded or obtusely angular, and the distance between shoulders is less th...

A taxonomic review of the genus Longgenacris You & Li, 1983 is provided, the taxonomic position of the genus is discussed briefly and clarified; the original placement of the genus in the subfamily Melanoplinae is confirmed. Type species of the genus Fruhstorferiola Willemse, 1922 is redescribed and new synonymy is proposed: Fruhstorferiola tonkinensis (Willemse, 1921) = Longgenacris rufiantennus Zheng et Wei, 2003, syn. nov.

Two new species, Chitaura linduensis Storozhenko, sp. nov. and C. doloduo Storozhenko, sp. nov., are described from Indonesia. Male genitalia of the type species of the genus, C. brachyptera Bolívar, 1918, are described and illustrated for the first time. The data on distribution of the Chitaura species on Sulawesi Island are clarified and showed in a map.

The new species Mesambria intermedia Storozhenko, sp. nov. is described from Indonesia. Male genitalia of the type species of the genera Mesambria Stål, 1878 and Traulia Stål, 1873 are described and illustrated for the first time. The diagnosis of the tribe Mesambriini is given and the position of this tribe in the modern classification of grasshoppers is discussed. New synonymy is proposed: Mesambriini Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1893 = Trauliini Bolivar, 1917, syn. nov., = Ranacridinae Xia, 2006, syn. nov.

The monotypiC genus Gorochovitettix Storozhenko et Pushkar, gen. nov. (type species Gorochovitettix kannackiensis Storozhenko et Pushkar, sp. nov. from Vietnam) is described in the subfamily Metrodorinae. The new genus is similar to the genus Orthotettix Hancock, 1909 from Malaysia, differing from the latter by the fore and mid femora considerably compressed laterally with the leaf-like upper and lower carinae. The new genus is similar to the genera Vaotettix Podgornaja, 1986 from Vietnam and Paramphinotus Zheng in Zheng and Ou, 2004 from South China by the distinctly widened frontal ridge, differing from them by the antennal socket placed distinctly below the lower margin of eye.

Vietnamese species of the genus Bolivaritettix Günther, 1939 are reviewed and illustrated. Altogether ten species are reported from Vietnam, of which five are new to science, namely—B. abruptus sp. nov., B. anaglypticus sp. nov., B. constrictus sp. nov., B. similis sp. nov., and B. vietnamensis sp. nov., while three species, B. sculptus (Bolívar, 1887), B. humeralis Günther, 1939 and B. celaenotus Zheng, Zhang et Dang, 2009, are recorded from Vietnam for the first time. A key to Vietnamese species is provided.

Limno-terrestrial pygmy grasshoppers are mostly recognised using morphology but characters used are not always clear-cut for species identification. From a faunistic survey in Singapore, Eucriotettix were collected and two new species are identified and described here: E. guentheri sp. nov. and E. simulans sp. nov. This was done by iteratively incorporating morphological, molecular, morphometric, and ecological data. Mitochondrial COI trees, COI cluster analysis, microhabitat preference, and morphometric analyses provide strong enough indirect evidence that the specimens comprise a pair of species. A key to species of Eucriotettix from Singapore is also provided.

Alectorolophus impunctus Storozhenko et Kim, sp. nov. from Sulawesi Island, Indonesia, is described here. Keys to both sexes of all known species and subspecies of Alectorolophus are also provided in this report. The position of genus Alectorolophus in the systematics of grasshoppers is clarified. It belongs to subtribe Ecphantina (Catantopinae: Catantopini) consisting of nine genera distributed in Australia and Oriental regions. The diagnosis of Ecphantina is clarified and a key to genera is provided. An annotated list of the genera and species of Ecphantina is given. Moreover, the correct name of the subfamily Coptacridinae is Coptacrinae Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1893.

The Permian family Camptoneuritidae (Insecta: Grylloblattida) is reviewed. New synonymies are proposed: Camptoneuritidae Martynov, 1930 = Demopteridae Carpenter, 1950, syn. nov., = Jabloniidae Kukalova, 1964, syn. nov. Key to genera of Camptoneuritidae is given. All genera are redescribed and illustrated. Camptoneurites soyanensis sp. nov. from Soyana locality (Middle Permian, Kazanian Stage; Arkhangelsk Region, Russia) and Tyulkinia bashkuevi gen. et sp. nov. from Tyulkino locality (Lower Permian, Kungurian Stage; Perm Region, Russia) are described.

The small cricket, Gryllus nipponensis, was described from Japan (Shiraki, 1913), but its generic position was uncertain. It was placed in Gryllulus Uvarov, 1935 (Shiraki et al., 1950), and then Modicogryllus Chopard, 1961 (Chopard, 1961). Japanese authors included Gryllus nipponensis in the genus Comidogryllus Otte & Alexander, 1983 based on the shape of head and the acoustic pattern of the species (Ichikawa et al., 2000; Ichikawa et al., 2006). Later it was shown that Gryllus nipponensis was not congeneric with Australian species of Comidogryllus and placed it in Modicogryllus with uncertain subgeneric position (Storozhenko & Paik, 2007).

Revision of family Atactophlebiidae is made. Olgaephilus emendatus gen. et sp. n. from Upper Permian of Arkhangelsk region is described. On the basis of wing-venation and structure of body family Atactophlebiidae must be transferred from order Grylloblattida (= Paraplecoptera) to the order Gerarida.

New genera and species of the order Grylloblattida from Upper Permian of Arkhangelsk region is described: Parapermula sojanensis sp. n., Liomopterites pomorus sp. n., L. argutus sp. n., Kazanella mendosa sp. n., Sibirella variegata sp. n., S. abrepta sp. n., Analiomopterites maculosus gen. et sp. n., Ornaticostella limbata gen. et sp. n., Sojanopermula lucida gen. et sp. n. An annotated list of 39 species in 25 genera and seven subfamilies of the pygmy grasshoppers (Orthoptera: Tetrididae) from Thailand is given; from these 18 species are recorded from this country for the first time. Five new species are described: Cotysoides gaponi sp. nov. (subfamily Metrodorinae), Eucriotettix anisyutkini sp. nov., Gavialidium bufocrocodil sp. nov., Scelimena bellula sp. nov. (subfamily Scelimeninae) and Phaesticus uvarovi sp. nov. (subfamily Discotettiginae). One species is transferred from Scelimena to Amphibotettix and a new combination is proposed: Scelimena hafizhaii Mahmmod, Idris et Salman, 2007 = Amphibotettix hafizhaii (Mahmmod, Idris et Salman, 2007), comb. nov. The previously unknown male of Falconius tschernovi Storozhenko, 2014 is described.

The monotypic genus Cleostratoides gen. nov. (type species Cleostratoides exoticus sp. nov. from Vietnam) is described in the subfamily Metrodorinae. New genus is closely related to the genera Mazarredia Bolivar, 1887, Xistrella Bolivar, 1909, Pseudoxistrella Liang, 1991, Orthotettixoides Zheng, 1998 and Bermania Storozhenko, 2012, but easily distinguished from all of them by the lateral ocelli situated just under fastigium of vertex and by the antennal sockets placed distinctly above the lower margin of eyes.

Subfamily Tripetalocerinae consist of four genera distributed in Southeast Asia. Clinophaestus gen. nov. (type species: Clinophaestus robustus sp. nov.) and Tripetaloceroides gen. nov. (type species: Tripetalocera tonkinensis Gunther, 1938) are described. New tribe Clinophaestini trib. nov. (type genus: Clinophaestus gen. nov.) is established. Diagnosis and key to tribes and genera are given. An annotated list of species is provided. Genus Kraengia Bolivar, 1909 is transferred from Tripetalocerinae to Discotettiginae.

The subfamily Anoplophilinae (Rhaphidophopridae) is recorded from Russia for the first time. Alpinanoplophilus kurilensis Storozhenko, sp. nov. is described from Kunashir Island. The holotype of the new species is deposited in the Zoological Institute of Russian Academy of Science (St. Petersburg, Russia). A revised key to the species of the genus Alpinanoplophilus Ishikawa, 1993 is provided.

Aim Based on seven consecutive seasons of biotic survey and inventory of the terrestrial and freshwater plants and animals of the 30 major islands of the Kuril Archipelago, a description of the biodiversity and an analysis of the biogeography of this previously little known part of the world are provided. Location The Kuril Archipelago, a natural laboratory for investigations into the origin, subsequent evolution, and long-term maintenance of insular populations, forms the eastern boundary of the Okhotsk Sea, extending 1200 km between Hokkaido, Japan, and the Kamchatka Peninsula of Russia. Anagaracris is considered as a monotypic genus in the tribe Bryodemini (Acrididae: Oedipodinae). New synonymy is proposed: Angaracris barabensis (Pallas, 1773) = Angaracris morulimarginis Huang, 1981, syn. nov.; = Angaracris ulashanicus Li, 1981, syn. nov.; Angaracris acrohylina Bi, 1986, syn. nov.; = Angaracris nigrimarginis Zheng et Ren, 1993, syn. nov.; = Angaracris morulipennis Zheng et Ren, 1994, syn. nov.; = Angaracris neimongolensis Zeng et Han, 1998, syn. nov. The diagnosis of the tribe Bryodemini is clarified and a key to the genera and subgenera is provided.

The pygmy grasshopper subfamily Cladonotinae and genera Epitettix Hancock, 1907, Pseudepitettix Zheng, 1995 and Tuberfemurus Zheng, 1992 are firstly recorded from Thailand. Three new species, namely Epitettixobtusus obtusus sp. nov. from provinces Nakhon Ratchasima and Chiang Mai, Pseudepitettix pimkarnae sp. nov. from province Saraburi and Tuberfemurus kanokwanae sp. nov. from province Saraburi, are described.

The monotypic genus Pseudoxistrella Liang, 1991 was established for P. eurymera Liang, 1991 from Hainan Island in China (Liang, 1991) as a genus closely related to Xistrella Bolivar, 1909. It was listed by Blackith (1992) and Otte (1997) without definition of subfamily of Tetrigidae. Later Pseudoxistrella was placed in the subfamily Metrodorinae (Liang & Zheng, 1998). But this genus is characterized by the rounder and turned downward posterior angle of lateral lobes pronotum like in subfamily Tetriginae (in Metrodorinae posterior angle truncated and turned outward), therefore now Pseudoxistrella is considered as a genus of uncertain position within subfamilies of Tetrigidae (Eades et al., 2012). A new species of the genus Pseudoxistrella was found in Vietnam. This gives us the possibility to clarify the diagnosis of Pseudoxistrella and its place in the family Tetrigidae.

A review of the genus Haplotropis and a key to tribes of the subfamily Pamphaginae are given. New synonymy is proposed: Haplotropis Saussure, 1888 = Sinohaplotropis Cao et Yin, 2008, syn. nov.; Haplotropis brunneriana Saussure, 1888 = Sinohaplotropis elunchuna Cao et Yin, 2008, syn. nov., = Haplotropis neimongolensis Jin, 1994, syn. nov.; Nocarodeini Bolivar, 1916 = Sulcatini Harz, 1975, syn. nov., = Nocarodesinae Zhang, Yin et Yin, 2003, syn. nov., = Tropidaucheninae Zhang, Yin et Yin, 2003, syn. nov.; Pamphagini Burmeister, 1840 = Orchaminae Zhang, Yin et Yin, 2003, syn. nov.; Trinchinae Stal, 1876 = Prionopropsinae Zhang, Yin et Yin, 2003, syn. nov.

A new replacement name Permulidae nom. n. is proposed for the Permian family Aliculidae Storozhenko, 1997 (Insecta: Grylloblattida). A review of Permulidae is given. All genera and species are redescribed and illustrated. A key to genera of Permulidae is given. New taxa of Permulidae are described: Permula edemskii sp. n., Sojanopermula rasnitsyni sp. n., Kazanalicula reducta gen. et sp. n., Mezenalicula connata gen. et sp. n., all from the Soyana locality (Middle Permian, Kazanian Stage; Arkhangelsk Region, Russia), and Mezenalicula conjuncta sp. n. from the Isady locality (Upper Permian, Severodvinian Stage; Vologda Region, Russia). New combinations are proposed: Sojanopermula minor Aristov, 2004 = Permula minor (Aristov, 2004), comb. n.; Sojanopermula tshekardensis Aristov, 2004 = Permula tshekardensis (Aristov, 2004), comb. n. A new genus Acropermula gen. n. (type species: Permula acra Kukalová, 1964, from the Lower Permian of Czech Republic) is established in the family Ideliidae. Neraphidia Novokshonov & Novokshonova, 1997 is transferred from Aliculidae to the order Eoblattida as a genus of uncertain taxonomic position inside this order.

Rural biodiversity in East Asia is at risk due to the loss of habitat diversity, and good indicators are needed to evaluate diverse habitats in rural landscapes. We examined whether the higher taxa (classes and orders) of soil invertebrates discriminated among several types of secondary forests such as broad-leaved deciduous forests, conifer forests and bamboo forests, primary forests, grasslands and/or wetlands, better than species assemblages of a well-established indicator, ground beetles (Coleoptera, Carabidae and/or Staphylinidae), in three East Asian regions (Japan, South Korea and the Russian Far East). We collected soil invertebrates with pitfall traps and used community composition and an ordination technique to test their performance as indicators. In Japan, the higher taxa of soil invertebrates discriminated finely among a wide range of habitats, and soil moisture seemed to be an important factor underlying habitat arrangement by these taxa along an ordination axis. While species assemblages of ground beetles detected large faunal differences among grasslands, wetlands and a composite group of three forest-type habitats (oak, conifer and bamboo forests), it failed to discriminate among any of the three forest-type habitats. When the analysis included only these types of forests, ground beetles were found to be able to discriminate finely among them, indicating limited performance in relation to the range of habitats covered. In the other two countries, the higher taxa of soil invertebrates showed a performance similar to that of species assemblages of ground beetles, possibly because of the narrow range of habitats analyzed. We conclude that the higher taxa of soil invertebrates are an effective tool for assessing the diversity of rural habitats across the East Asian region, where taxonomic knowledge at the species level is still insufficient. Our results may be applied broadly to other regions where agricultural intensification and land abandonment have caused quantitative and qualitative changes in rural landscapes.

Mimadiestra gen. nov. (type species: M. biloba sp. nov.) is described from Thailand. Megadiestramima Storozhenko et Gorochov, 1992 and Leodiestramima Storozhenko, 2009, stat. nov. are considered as separate genera, therefore, three new combinations are proposed: Leodiestramima exculta (Gorochov, 1998), comb. nov., L. lecta (Gorochov, 1998), comb. nov., L. orlovi (Gorochov, 1994), comb. nov. A key to genera of the tribe Diestramimini is given.

Subfamily Tripetalocerinae consist of four genera distributed in Southeast Asia. Clinophaestus gen. nov. (type species: Clinophaestus robustus sp. nov.) and Tripetaloceroides gen. nov. (type species: Tripetalocera tonkinensis Gunther, 1938) are described. New tribe Clinophaestini trib. nov. (type genus: Clinophaestus gen. nov.) is established. Diagnosis and key to tribes and genera are given. An annotated list of species is provided. Genus Kraengia Bolivar, 1909 is transferred from Tripetalocerinae to Discotettiginae.

A new subfamily Anoplophilinae Storozhenko & Paik subfam. nov. of the Rhaphodophoridae is established for two genera, Anoplophilus Karny, 1931 (type genus) and Alpinanoplophilus Ishikawa, 1993, distributed in Japan and Korea. Keys to the subfamilies of the Rhaphidophoridae and the genera of the new subfamily are provided. An annotated list of known genera and species of the Anoplophilinae is given. Anoplophilus koreanus Storozhenko & Paik sp. nov. is described from Korea.
