Abstract A system of hospitals in large cities can be considered a large and diverse but interconnected system. Widely applied in hospitals, electronic health records (EHR) are crucially different from each other because of the use of different health information systems, internal hospital rules, and individual behavior of physicians. The unstructured (textual) data of EHR is rarely used to assess the citywide quality of healthcare. Within the study, we analyze EHR data, particularly textual unstructured data, as a reflection of the complex multi-agent system of healthcare in the city of Saint Petersburg, Russia. Through analyzing the data collected by the Medical Information and Analytical Center, a method was proposed and evaluated for identifying a common structure, understanding the diversity, and assessing information quality in EHR data through the application of natural language processing techniques.

The article proposes a universal dual-axis intelligent systems assessment scale. The scale considers the properties of intelligent systems within the environmental context, which develops over time. In contrast to the frequent consideration of the “mind” of artificial intelligent systems on a scale from “weak” to “strong”, we highlight the modulating influences of anticipatory ability on their “brute force”. In addition, the complexity, the ”weight“ of the cognitive task and the ability to critically assess it beforehand determine the actual set of cognitive tools, the use of which provides the best result in these conditions. In fact, the presence of ”common sense“ options is what connects the ability to solve a problem with the correct use of such an ability itself. The degree of ”correctness“ and ”adequacy“ is determined by the combination of a suitable solution with the temporal characteristics of the event, phenomenon, object or subject under study. The proposed approach can be applied in the evaluation of various intelligent agents in different contexts including AI and humans performing complex domain-specific tasks with high uncertainty.

The ideology behind process modelling is to visualise lengthy event logs into simple representations interpretable to the end user. Classifying process models as simple or complex is based on criteria that evaluate attributes of models and quantify them on a scale. These metrics measure various characteristics of process models and describe their qualities. Over the years, vast amounts of metrics have been proposed in the community, making it difficult to find and select the appropriate ones for implementation. This paper presents a state-of-the-art meta-review that lists and summarises all the evaluation metrics proposed to date. We have studied the behaviour of the four most widely used metrics in process mining with an experiment. Further, we have used seven healthcare domain datasets of varying natures to analyse the behaviour of these metrics under different threshold conditions. Our work aims to propose and demonstrate the capabilities to use our selected metrics as a standard of measurement for the process mining domain.

Within process mining, discovery techniques make it possible to construct business process models automatically from event logs. However, results often do not achieve a balance between model complexity and fitting accuracy, establishing a need for manual model adjusting. This paper presents an approach to process mining that provides semi-automatic support to model optimization based on the combined assessment of model complexity and fitness. To balance complexity and fitness, a model simplification approach is proposed, which abstracts the raw model at the desired granularity. Additionally, we introduce a concept of meta-states, a cycle collapsing in the model, which can potentially simplify the model and interpret it. We aim to demonstrate the capabilities of our technological solution using three datasets from different applications in the healthcare domain. These are remote monitoring processes for patients with arterial hypertension and workflows of healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. A case study also investigates the use of various complexity measures and different ways of solution application, providing insights on better practices in improving interpretability and complexity/fitness balance in process models.

Complex systems’ modeling and simulation are powerful ways to investigate a multitude of natural phenomena providing extended knowledge on their structure and behavior. However, enhanced modeling and simulation require integration of various data and knowledge sources, models of various kinds (data-driven models, numerical models, simulation models, etc.), and intelligent components in one composite solution. Growing complexity of such composite model leads to the need of specific approaches for management of such model. This need extends where the model itself becomes a complex system. One of the important aspects of complex model management is dealing with the uncertainty of various kinds (context, parametric, structural, and input/output) to control the model. In the situation where a system being modeled, or modeling requirements change over time, specific methods and tools are needed to make modeling and application procedures (metamodeling operations) in an automatic manner. To support automatic building and management of complex models we propose a general evolutionary computation approach which enables managing of complexity and uncertainty of various kinds. The approach is based on an evolutionary investigation of model phase space to identify the best model’s structure and parameters. Examples of different areas (healthcare, hydrometeorology, and social network analysis) were elaborated with the proposed approach and solutions.
