A series of six-coordinate [Cu(L)L1][BF4]2 (L1 = 2,6-bis{1-oxyl-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazol-2-yl}pyridine) complexes are reported. Ferromagnetic coupling between the Cu and L1 ligand spins is enhanced by an L coligand with distal methyl substituents, which is attributed to a sterically induced suppression of its Jahn–Teller distortion.

We report a multifrequency NMR study of heterospin complexes [Eu(SQ)3Ln], where SQ is 3,6-di(tert-butyl)-1,2-semiquinone, L is THF, Py or Dipy and n is the number of diamagnetic ligands. Multifrequency NMR experiments allowed us to determine the effective paramagnetic shifts of the ligands (L = THF or Py) and the chemical equilibrium constant for [Eu(SQ)3(THF)2]. In addition, we have found a strong magnetic field effect on the NMR line broadening, giving rise to very broad NMR lines at high magnetic field. We attribute this effect to broadening under fast exchange conditions when the NMR spectrum represents a homogeneously broadened line with a width proportional to the square of NMR frequency difference of the free and bound forms of L. Consequently, the linewidth strongly increases with the magnetic field. This broadening effect allows one to determine relevant kinetic parameters, i.e., the effective exchange time. A complex cascade of solid-state processes initiated by variation of temperature was found for the heterospin complex [Cu(hfac)2L(Me/Et)] formed in the reaction of copper(II) hexafluoroacetylacetonate [Cu(hfac)2] with stable nitronyl nitroxide 2-(1-methyl-3-ethyl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazole-3-oxide-1-oxyl (L(Me/Et)). The cooling of the compound below 260 K initiated a solid-state chemical reaction, which led to a depolymerization of chains and formation of a pair heterospin complex [Cu(hfac)2L(Me/Et)2][[Cu(hfac)2]3L(Me/Et)2]. Further decrease in temperature below 144 K led to a spin transition accompanied by a drastic decrease in the effective magnetic moment from 2.52 to 2.24 μB. When the compound was heated, the order of effects was reversed: at first, the magnetic moment abruptly increased, and then the molecular fragments of the pair cluster united into polymer chains. Two hysteresis loops correspond to this cascade of temperature-induced structural transformations on the experimental dependence μeff(T): one at high (T↑ = 283 K and T↓ = 260 K) and the other at low (T↑ = 161 K, T↓ = 144 K) temperature. The spin transitions were also recorded for the [[Cu(hfac)2]3L(Bu/Et)2] and [[Cu(hfac)2]5L(Bu/Et)4] molecular complexes, which are models of the trinuclear fragment of the {[Cu(hfac)2]3L(Me/Et)2} pair cluster.

The reaction of copper(II) hexafluoroacetylacetonate [Cu(hfac)2] with the stable nitronyl nitroxide 2-(1-ethyl-3-methyl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazole-3-oxide-1-oxyl (L(a)) resulted in a paired heterospin complex [[Cu(hfac)2]3(μ-O,N-L(a))2][Cu(hfac)2(O-L(a))2]. The crystals of the compound were found to be capable of a reversible single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SC-SC) transformation initiated by the variation of temperature. At room temperature, the molecular structure of [[Cu(hfac)2]3(μ-O,N-L(a))2][Cu(hfac)2(O-L(a))2] is formed by the alternating fragments of the pair complex. Cooling the crystals of the complex below 225 K caused considerable mutual displacements of adjacent molecules, which ended in a transformation of the molecular structure into a polymer chain structure. A reversible topotactic polymerization-depolymerization coordination reaction actually takes place in the solid during repeated cooling-heating cycles: [[Cu(hfac)2]3(μ-O,N-L(a))2][Cu(hfac)2(O-L(a))2] ⇌ Cu(hfac)2(μ-O,N-L(a))]∞. Polymerization during cooling is the result of the anomalously great shortening of intermolecular distances (from 4.403 A at 295 K to 2.460 A at 150 K; Δd = 1.943 A) between the terminal Cu atoms of the trinuclear fragments {[[Cu(hfac)2]3(μ-O,N-L(a))2]} and the noncoordinated N atoms of the pyrazole rings of the mononuclear {[Cu(hfac)2(O-L(a))2]} fragments. When the low-temperature phase was heated above 270 K, the polymer chain structure was destroyed and the compound was again converted to the pair molecular complex. The specifics of the given SC-SC transformation lies in the fact that the process is accompanied by a magnetic anomaly, because the intracrystalline displacements of molecules lead to a considerable change in the mutual orientation of the paramagnetic centers, which, in turn, causes modulation of the exchange interaction between the odd electrons of the Cu(2+) ion and nitroxide. On the temperature curve of χT, this shows itself as a hysteresis loop. The nontrivial character of the recorded spin transition during the cooling of the sample below 225 K lies in the fact that the magnetic moment abruptly increased. In contrast, heating the sample above 270 K led to a drastic decrease in χT. This behavior of χT is caused by a stepwise change in the character of the exchange interaction in the {>N-(•)O-Cu(2+)-O(•)-N

We report the X-band (9 GHz) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) study of series of bis(o-semiquinonato)copper(II) complexes with different ligands. It was found previously, that exchange interactions in spin triads of these compounds are very sensitive to the structure of the ligand coordinated to the central copper(II) ion. Ligand moderates the copper–radical and radical–radical exchange interactions and strongly changes the magnetic properties of the compound. Depending on a ligand, ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic character of exchange dominates in the system. The EPR study of these complexes allowed us to obtain information on zero-field splitting parameters and their distributions in the studied compounds. The EPR results compliment previously obtained spectroscopic data on these compounds and suggest the pronounced plasticity of the clusters manifested in the broad distributions of their rhombicity parameters.

Thermally induced spin transitions in a family of heterospin polymer chain complexes of Cu 2+ hexafluoroacetylacetonate with two pyrazole-substituted nitronyl nitroxides are studied using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The structural rearrangements at low temperatures induce spin transitions in exchange-coupled spin triads of nitroxide-copper(II)-nitroxide. The values of exchange interactions in spin triads of studied systems are typically on the order of tens to hundreds of inverse centimeters. The large magnitude of exchange interaction determines the specific and very informative peculiarities in EPR spectra due to the predominant population of the ground state of a spin triad and spin exchange processes. The variety of these manifestations depending on structure and magnetic properties of spin triads are described. EPR is demonstrated as an efficient tool for the characterization of spin transitions and for obtaining information on the temperature-dependent sign and value of the exchange interaction in strongly coupled spin triads.

The paramagnetic salts (NH3But)1 and [K(NH2But)2]1, where 1 is the 3-oxyl-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-2-oxoimidazolidin-1-olate anion, were isolated for the first time in the individual state. The crystal structure of [K(NH2But)2]1 involves polymer chains formed by hydrogen bonding between anions 1 and [K2(NH2But)4]2+ cation dimer fragments. The magnetic properties of [K(NH2But)2]1 are well described by the quasi-isolated dimer model with spins S = 1/2 coupled by weak exchange interactions via [K2(NH2But)4]2 fragments in polymer chains.

An effective procedure has been developed for the synthesis of the potassium salt of 4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazole-1-oxyl-3-oxide-2-carboxylic acid K(1). The salts of 4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-1-oxyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazole-2-carboxylic acid X(2) are kinetically much more stable than K(1). Due to this, a series of heterospin complexes Cu(2)2(CH3OH)2, Cu(2)2(H2O)2, Cu(2)2, Co(2)2(CH3OH)2, Ni(2)2(H2O)2, Ni(2)2(py)2, and Ni(2)2(dipy) · H2O were isolated. For K(2), Cu(2)2(CH3OH)2, and Ni(2)2(py)2, crystal and molecular structure has been determined. For Cu(2)2 and Ni(2)2(bipy), cooperative magnetic ordering has been recorded at 16.6 and 4.6 K, respectively.

A series of mixed-metal solid solutions MxCu1 − x(hfac)2L (M = Mn, Ni, and Co) liable to undergo thermally induced spin transitions have been synthesized. The structure and magnetic properties of the compounds have been investigated. By varying the metal to be incorporated in the complex (Mn, Ni, or Co) and the value of x, one can control the character of the magnetic anomaly.

Three approaches to the synthesis of (R)-2-(1-hydroxy-4,4,5,5-tetraalkylimidazolidin-2-ylidene)ethanones 1 are described: (a) condensation of 1,2-bishydroxylamines with β-ketoaldehyde synthons, (b) treatment of metallated 1-hydroxy-2-methyl-4,5-dihydroimidazoles with esters, and (c) 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition between 1-hydroxy-4,5-dihydroimidazole-3-oxide and DMAD. The reactivity of 1 with electrophiles has been studied. The exocyclic methylene (enamine) carbon atom is shown to be the major site of electrophilic attack. Synthesized chloro-substituted 1-hydroxy-2-acetylideneimidazolidines react with sodium cyanide to form the corresponding nitriles. Oxidation of these nitriles occurs with formation of persistent vinyl nitroxides, which are of interest as potential paramagnetic ligands. (© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Methods for the synthesis of a new family of nitronylnitroxides, iminonitroxides, and their precursors with 2-hydroxyphenyl or 3-hydroxypyridin-2-yl substituents in the side chain have been developed. Five heterospin chelates of Cu(II) with deprotonated iminonitroxides have been isolated. Their structure and magnetic properties have been studied. In all complexes, ferromagnetic intramolecular exchange interactions take place (J∼40–350 cm−1).

The first nitronyl nitroxides containing tetrazole substituents: sodium salt of 2-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazol-3-oxide-1-oxyl (Na(2)), 2-(1-methyl-1H-tetrazol-5-yl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazol-3-oxide-1-oxyl (3), and 2-(2-methyl-2H-tetrazol-5-yl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazol-3-oxide-1-oxyl (4) have been synthesized. The structures of 2–4 were confirmed by X-ray analysis. For 2, a tendency to form highly dimensional structures by interaction with transition metals has been found. MnII tends to form diamond-like packing with 2 using [Mn(H2O)6]2+ and [Mn(2)3]− building blocks. NiII forms layered structures from the binuclear cations with the aid of the bridging nitroxide [En2Ni(2)NiEn2]3+ and H-bonded ClO4 − groups.

Spin-labelled compounds are widely used in chemistry, physics, biology and the materials sciences but the synthesis of stable high-spin organic molecules is still a challenge. We succeeded in synthesising heteroatom analogues of the 1,1,2,3,3-pentamethylenepropane (PMP) diradicals with two nitronyl nitroxide (DR1) and with two iminonitroxide (DR2) fragments linked through the C(sp2) atom of the nitrone group. According to magnetic susceptibility measurements, EPR data and ab initio calculations at the (8,6)CASSCF and (8,6)NEVPT2 levels, DR1 and DR2 have singlet ground states. The singlet–triplet energy splitting (2J) is low (J/k=−7.4 for DR1 and −6.0 K for DR2), which comes from the disjoint nature of these diradicals. The reaction of [Cu(hfac)2] with DR1 gives rise to different heterospin complexes in which the diradical acts as a rigid ligand, retaining its initial conformation. For the [{Cu(hfac)2}2(DR1)(H2O)] complex, sufficiently strong ferromagnetic interactions (J1/k=42.7 and J2/k=14.1 K) between two coordinating CuII ions and DR1 were revealed. In [{Cu(hfac)2}2(DR1)(H2O)][Cu(hfac)2(H2O)], the very strong and antiferromagnetic (J/k=−416.1 K) exchange interaction between one of the coordinating CuII ions and DR1 is caused by the very short equatorial CuO bond length (1.962 A).
