Search

The plasma opacity in stars depends mainly on the local state of matter (the density, temperature, and chemical composition at the point of interest), but in supernova ejecta it also depends on the expansion velocity gradient, because the Doppler effect shifts the spectral lines differently in different ejecta layers. This effect is known in the literature as the expansion opacity. The existing approaches to the inclusion of this effect, in some cases, predict different results in identical conditions. In this paper we compare the approaches of Blinnikov (1996) and Friend and Castor (1983)–Eastman and Pinto (1993) to calculating the opacity in supernova ejecta and give examples of the influence of different approximations on the model light curves of supernovae.

We present the expected observational properties of a general relativistic instability supernova (GRSN) from the 55,500 Msun primordial (Population III) star. Supermassive stars exceeding 1e4 Msun may exist in the early Universe. They are generally considered to collapse through the general relativistic instability to be seed black holes to form supermassive (~ 1e9 Msun) black holes observed as high-redshift quasars. Some of them, however, may explode as GRSNe if the explosive helium burning unbinds the supermassive stars following the collapse triggered by the general relativistic instability. We perform the radiation hydrodynamics simulation of the GRSN starting shortly before the shock breakout. We find that the GRSN is characterized by a long-lasting (550 d) luminous (1.5e44 erg/s) plateau phase with the photospheric temperature of around 5000 K in the rest frame. The plateau phase lasts for decades when it appears at high redshifts and it will likely be observed as a persistent source in the future deep near-infrared imaging surveys. Especially, the near-infrared images reaching 29 AB magnitude that can be obtained by Galaxy and Reionization EXplorer (G-REX) and James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) allow us to identify GRSNe up to z ~ 15. Deeper images enable us to discover GRSNe at even higher redshifts. Having extremely red color, they can be distinguished from other persistent sources such as high-redshift galaxies by using color information. In this work we present the photometric and spectroscopic observations of Type IIb Supernova 2017gpn. This supernova was discovered in the error-box of LIGO/Virgo G299232 gravitational-wave event. We obtained the light curves in B and R passbands and modelled them numerically using the one-dimensional radiation hydrocode STELLA. The best-fit model has the following parameters: the pre-SN star mass and the radius are 3.5 Msun and 50 Rsun, respectively; the explosion energy is Eexp = 1.2 * 10^51 erg; the mass of radioactive nickel is M56Ni =0.11 Msun, which is totally mixed through the ejecta, the mass of the hydrogen envelope 0.06 Msun. Moreover, SN 2017gpn is a confirmed SN IIb that is located at the farthest distance from the center of its host galaxy NGC 1343 (i.e. the projected distance is about 21 kpc). Abstract We have studied the light curves of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) and the physical parameters inferred from them. We have constructed both analytical and numerical light curves of SNe Ia. Using an empirical relation between the SN luminosity and light-curve parameters, we have managed to impose constraints on the hydrodynamic solutions obtained by the STELLA code and to produce a sample of models that describe the observational properties of real SNe maximally accurately. With this sample we have established a relationship between the opacity in SN Ia ejecta and the parameters being determined directly from observations. The method has been tested on two classical SNe Ia as an example: 2011fe and 2012fr. The presented approach allows the opacity to be found without resorting to time-consuming computations.

Mixing of 56Ni, whose nuclear decay energy is a major luminosity source in stripped-envelope supernovae, is known to affect the observational properties of stripped-envelope supernovae such as light-curve and color evolution. Here we systematically investigate the effect of 56Ni mixing on the photospheric velocity evolution in stripped-envelope supernovae. We show that 56Ni mixing significantly affects the early photospheric velocity evolution. The photospheric velocity, which is often used to constrain the ejecta mass and explosion energy, significantly varies by just changing the degree of 56Ni mixing. In addition, the models with a small degree of 56Ni mixing show a flattening in the early photospheric velocity evolution, while the fully mixed models show a monotonic decrease. The velocity flattening appears in both helium and carbon+oxygen progenitor explosions with a variety of ejecta mass, explosion energy, and 56Ni mass. Some stripped-envelope supernovae with early photospheric velocity information do show such a flattening. We find that Type Ib SN 2007Y, which has early photospheric velocity information, has a signature of a moderate degree of 56Ni mixing in the photospheric velocity evolution and about a half of the ejecta is mixed in it. We present the first results of a comprehensive supernova (SN) radiative-transfer (RT) code-comparison initiative (StaNdaRT), where the emission from the same set of standardized test models is simulated by currently-used RT codes. A total of ten codes have been run on a set of four benchmark ejecta models of Type Ia supernovae. We consider two sub-Chandrasekhar-mass ($M_\mathrm{tot} = 1.0$ M$_\odot$) toy models with analytic density and composition profiles and two Chandrasekhar-mass delayed-detonation models that are outcomes of hydrodynamical simulations. We adopt spherical symmetry for all four models. The results of the different codes, including the light curves, spectra, and the evolution of several physical properties as a function of radius and time, are provided in electronic form in a standard format via a public repository. We also include the detailed test model profiles and several python scripts for accessing and presenting the input and output files. We also provide the code used to generate the toy models studied here. In this paper, we describe in detail the test models, radiative-transfer codes and output formats and provide access to the repository. The properties of low-mass neutron stars with rigid rotation are considered. The possible evolution paths of such stars in a close binary system with mass transfer are calculated. Thorne-Zytkow objects are stars that have a neutron star core with an extended hydrogen-rich envelope. Massive Thorne-Zytkow objects are proposed to explode when the nuclear reactions sustaining their structure are terminated by the exhaustion of the seed elements. In this paper, we investigate the observational properties of the possible Thorne-Zytkow object explosions. We find that Thorne-Zytkow object explosions are observed as long-duration transients lasting for several years. If the accretion disk triggering the explosions does not last for a long time, Thorne-Zytkow object explosions have a luminosity plateau with about 1e39 erg/s lasting for a few years, and then they suddenly become faint. They would be observed as vanished stars after a bright phase lasting for a few years. If the accretion disk is sustained for long time, the Thorne-Zytkow object explosions become as bright as supernovae. They would be observed as supernovae with rise times of several hundred days. We found that their photospheric velocities are 2000 km/s at most, much smaller than those found in supernovae. We explore the appearance of light clusters at high densities of collapsing stellar cores. Special attention is paid to the unstable isotope H4, which was not included in previous studies. The importance of light clusters in the calculation of rates for neutrino matter interaction is discussed. The main conclusion is that thermodynamic quantities are only weakly sensitive to the chemical composition. The change in pressure and hence the direct change in collapse dynamics will be minor. This paper provides an overview of the current state of the stripping model for short gamma-ray bursts. After the historical joint detection of the gravitational wave event GW170817 and the accompanying gamma-ray burst GRB170817A, the relation between short gamma-ray bursts and neutron star mergers has been reliably confirmed. We show that many properties of GRB170817A, which turned out to be peculiar in comparison with other short gamma-ray bursts, are naturally explained in the context of the stripping model, specifically, the time (1.7 s) between the peak of the gravitational wave signal and the detection of the gamma-ray burst, its total isotropic energy, and the parameters of the red and blue components of the accompanying kilonova., 13 pages, 4 figures

Double-peaked light curves are observed for some Type Ic supernovae (SNe Ic), including LSQ14efd, iPTF15dtg, and SN 2020bvc. One possible explanation of the first peak would be shock-cooling emission from massive extended material around the progenitor, which is produced by mass eruption or rapid expansion of the outermost layers of the progenitor shortly before the supernova explosion. We investigate the effects of such circumstellar matter (CSM) on the multiband optical light curves of SNe Ic using the radiation hydrodynamics code STELLA. Two different SNe Ic progenitor masses at the pre-SN stage (3.93 M ⊙ and 8.26 M ⊙) are considered in the SN models. The adopted parameter space consists of the CSM mass of M CSM = 0.05–0.3M ⊙, the CSM radius of R CSM = 1013–1015 cm, and the explosion energy of E burst = (1.0–12.0) × 1051 erg. We also investigate the effects of the radioactive nickel distribution on the overall shape of the light curve and the color evolution. Comparison of our SN models with the double-peaked SNe Ic LSQ14efd, iPTF15dtg, and SN 2020bvc indicates that these three SNe Ic had a similar CSM structure (i.e., M CSM ≈ 0.1–0.2M ⊙ and R CSM = 1013–1014 cm), which might imply a common mechanism for their CSM formation. The implied mass-loss rate of M ̇ ≳ 1.0 M ⊙ yr − 1 is too high to be explained by the previously suggested scenarios for pre-SN eruption, which calls for a novel mechanism.

We consider the effect of a change in the rate of flux decline in the U band for type II-P supernovae (SNe IIP) as a function of metallicity $Z$. Based on this effect, we propose a new method to determine the photometric redshift from the SN IIP light curve in the U band. Using the STELLA code, we have constructed model light curves in different bands for different redshifts $z = 0.0, 0.1$, and $0.3$ as the metallicity in the models decreases from $Z \sim 10^{-3}$ to $\sim 10^{-6}$. The flux in the U band is shown to reach a plateau at the lowest metallicities. We present near-infrared and optical observations of the Type Ic Supernova (SN) 2020oi in the galaxy M100 and the broad-lined Type Ic SN2020bvc in UGC 9379, using Gemini, LCO, SOAR, and other ground-based telescopes. The near-IR spectrum of SN2020oi at day 63 since the explosion shows strong CO emissions and a rising K-band continuum, which is the first unambiguous dust detection from a Type Ic SN. Non-LTE CO modeling shows that CO is still optically thick, and that the lower limit to the CO mass is 0.001 Msun. The dust temperature is 810 K, and the dust mass is ~10^(-5) Msun. We explore the possibilities that the dust is freshly formed in the ejecta, heated dust in the pre-existing circumstellar medium, and an infrared echo. The light curves of SN2020oi are consistent with a STELLA model with canonical explosion energy, 0.07 Msun Ni mass, and 0.7 Msun ejecta mass. A model of high explosion energy of ~10^(52) erg, 0.4 Msun Ni mass, 6.5 Msun ejecta mass with the circumstellar matter, reproduces the double-peaked light curves of SN2020bvc. We observe temporal changes of absorption features of the IR Ca~II triplet, S~I at 1.043 micron, and Fe~II at 5169 Angstrom. The blue-shifted lines indicate high velocities, up to 60,000 km/s for SN2020bvc and 20,000 km/s for SN2020oi, and the expansion velocity rapidly declines before the optical maximum. We report the discovery of a nearby massive white dwarf with He-H atmosphere. The white dwarf is located at a distance of $74.5\pm0.9$ pc. Its radius, mass, effective temperature, H/He ratio and age are $R=2500\pm100$ km, $M=1.33\pm0.01$ $\rm M_{\odot}$, $T_{\mathrm{eff}}=31200\pm 1200$ K, ${\mathrm{H/He}}\sim0.1$ and $330\pm40$ Myr, respectively. The observed spectrum is redshifted by $V_{\mathrm{r}}=+240\pm15$ km s$^{-1},$ which is mostly attributed to the gravitational redshift. The white dwarf shows a regular stable photometric variability with amplitude $\Delta g\approx0.06^{\mathrm{m}}$ and period $P=353.456$ s suggesting rapid rotation. This massive, hot and rapidly rotating white dwarf is likely to originate from the merging of close binary white dwarf system that avoided explosion in a thermonuclear type Ia supernova at the Carboniferous Period of the Earth history., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, submitted

We explore the properties of supernova (SN) "Refsdal" - the first discovered gravitationally lensed SN with multiple images. A large magnification provided by the galactic-scale lens, augmented by the cluster lens, gave us a unique opportunity to perform a detailed modelling of a distant SN at z=1.5. We present results of radiation hydrodynamics modelling of SN Refsdal. According to our calculations, the SN Refsdal progenitor is likely to be a more massive and energetic version of SN 1987A, i.e. a blue supergiant star with the following parameters: the progenitor radius $R_0 = (50 \pm 1) R_{\odot}$, the total mass $M_{tot}= (25\pm 2) M_{\odot}$, the radioactive $^{56}$Ni mass $M_{^{56}\mathrm{Ni}} = (0.26 \pm 0.05) \,M_{\odot}$, and the total energy release $E_{burst}=(4.7 \pm 0.8)\times10^{51}$ erg. Reconstruction of SN light curves allowed us to obtain time delays and magnifications for the images S2-S4 relative to S1 with higher accuracy than previous template-based estimates of Rodney \& et al. (2016). The measured time delays are $\Delta t_{S2-S1} = 9.5^{+2.6}_{-2.7} $ days, $\Delta t_{S3-S1} = 4.2^{+2.3}_{-2.3} $ days, and $\Delta t_{S4-S1} = 30^{+7.8}_{-8.2} $ days. The obtained magnification ratios are $\mu_{S2/S1}= 1.14 \pm 0.02$, $\mu_{S3/S1} = 1.01 \pm 0.02 $, and $\mu_{S4/S1} = 0.35\pm 0.02$. We estimate the Hubble constant $H_0 = 68.6^{+13.6}_{-9.7}$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ via re-scaling the time delays predicted by different lens models to match the values obtained in this work. With more photometric data on the fifth image SX, we will be able to further refine the time delay and magnification estimates for SX and obtain competitive constraints on $H_0$., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, 5 tables. Shock breakout (SBO) signal is the first signature of the supernova explosion apart from gravitational waves and neutrinos. Observational properties of SBO, such as bolometric luminosity and colour temperature, connect to the supernova progenitor and explosion parameters. Detecting SBO or SBO-cooling will constrain the progenitor and explosion models of collapsing stars. In the light of recently launched eROSITA telescope, the rate for detection of SBO is a few events during a year. In the current study, we examine the analytic formulae derived by Shussman et al. (2016). We use four red supergiant models from their study, while running explosions with the radiation hydrodynamics code STELLA. We conclude that there is a good agreement between analytic and numerical approaches for bolometric luminosity and colour temperature during SBO. The analytic formulae for the SBO signal based on the global supernova parameters can be used instead of running time-consuming numerical simulations. We define spectral range where analytic formulae for the SBO spectra are valid. We provide improved analytical expression for the SBO spectral energy distribution. We confirm dependence of colour temperature on radius derived by analytical studies and suggest to use early time observations to confine the progenitor radius. We show that the luminous supernovae (SNe) associated with ultra-long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) can be related to the slow cooling from the explosions of hydrogen-free progenitors extended by pulsational pair-instability. In the accompanying paper (Marchant & Moriya 2020), we have shown that some rapidly-rotating hydrogen-free GRB progenitors that experience pulsational pair-instability can keep an extended structure caused by pulsational pair-instability until the core collapse. Such progenitors have large radii exceeding 10 Rsun and they sometimes reach beyond 1000 Rsun at the time of the core collapse. They are, therefore, promising progenitors of ultra-long GRBs. We here perform the light-curve modeling of the explosions of one extended hydrogen-free progenitor with a radius of 1962 Rsun. Thanks to the large progenitor radius, the ejecta experience slow cooling after the shock breakout and they become rapidly evolving (~ 1e43 erg/s) SNe in optical even without the energy input from the 56Ni nuclear decay when the explosion energy is more than 1e52 erg. The 56Ni decay energy input can affect the light curves after the optical light-curve peak and make the light-curve decay slow when the 56Ni mass is around 1 Msun. They also have fast photospheric velocity above 10,000 km/s and hot photospheric temperature above 10,000 K at around the peak luminosity. We find that the rapid rise and luminous peak found in the optical light curve of SN 2011kl, which is associated with the ultra-long GRB 111209A, can be explained as the cooling phase of the extended progenitor. The ultra-long GRB progenitors proposed in Marchant & Moriya (2020) can explain both the ultra-long GRB duration and the accompanying SN properties. When the GRB jet is off-axis or choked, the luminous SNe could be observed as fast blue optical transients without accompanying GRBs. Supernovae are such bright objects that they can be observed even at high redshifts. Some types of such events, for example, type Ia (thermonuclear), have peculiarities of the light curve, which allows them to be used for cosmological applications. The light curve is determined by the details of the explosion dynamics and nucleosynthesis: in particular, it depends on the amount of iron-peak elements produced during the explosion. We discuss the burning processes in such objects and the peculiarities of turbulence simulations in them, which is needed for a proper hydrodynamic description of the explosion process. A direct nucleosynthesis calculation is performed for the temperature and density profiles derived in the available 3D hydrodynamic explosion simulations. We show that in the supernova progenitor model considered the calculated abundances of elements from carbon to iron-peak elements are in good agreement both with the observations and with the calculations of other authors. At the same time, no r-elements are produced even at the maximum neutron excess for this model (Ye ~ 0.47) due to the slow evolution of the density and temperature.

A hydrodynamical description of supernova remnants is based on the approximation of locally equilibrium particle distributions. Shock waves in supernova remnants at various stages of ejecta propagation are collisionless and form nonequilibrium particle distributions that relax slowly to quasiequilibrium distributions within a time longer than the hydrodynamic time. A kinetic model of the heating of ions behind the front of a shock wave in the SN 1987A remnant is considered with allowance for a complex chemical composition of the ejecta, and nonequilibrium distributions of ions in the vicinity of this shock wave are calculated. In addition to the quasi-Maxwellian peak, which determines the effective temperature of a given charge state of an ion, nonequilibriumdistributions of ions contain, in some cases, a suprethermal component, which may describe to the injection of ions in the process of cosmic-ray acceleration.

Recent discoveries of weak and fast optical transients raise the question of their origin. We investigate the minimum ejecta mass associated with core-collapse supernovae (SNe) of Type Ic. We show that mass transfer from a helium star to a compact companion can produce an ultra-stripped core which undergoes iron core collapse and leads to an extremely fast and faint SN Ic. In this Letter, a detailed example is presented in which the pre-SN stellar mass is barely above the Chandrasekhar limit, resulting in the ejection of only ~0.05-0.20 M_sun of material and the formation of a low-mass neutron star. We compute synthetic light curves of this case and demonstrate that SN 2005ek could be explained by our model. We estimate that the fraction of such ultra-stripped to all SNe could be as high as 0.001-0.01. Finally, we argue that the second explosion in some double neutron star systems (for example, the double pulsar PSR J0737-3039B) was likely associated with an ultra-stripped SN Ic., Comment: ApJ Letters, in press, 6 pages, 5 figures (emulateapj style). We present optical and near-infrared observations of the rapidly evolving supernova (SN) 2017czd that shows hydrogen features. The optical light curves exhibit a short plateau phase ($\sim 13$ days in the $R$-band) followed by a rapid decline by $4.5$ mag in $\sim 20 \mathrm{days}$ after the plateau. The decline rate is larger than those of any standard SNe, and close to those of rapidly evolving transients. The peak absolute magnitude is $-16.8$ mag in the $V$-band, which is within the observed range for SNe IIP and rapidly evolving transients. The spectra of SN 2017czd clearly show the hydrogen features and resemble those of SNe IIP at first. The H$\alpha$ line, however, does not evolve much with time and it becomes similar to those in SNe IIb at decline phase. We calculate the synthetic light curves using a SN IIb progenitor which has 16 M$_{\odot}$ at the zero-age main sequence and evolves in a binary system. The model with a low explosion energy ($5\times 10^{50}$ erg) and a low ${}^{56}$Ni mass ($0.003 \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$) can reproduce the short plateau phase as well as the sudden drop of the light curve as observed in SN 2017czd. We conclude that SN 2017czd might be the first identified weak explosion from a SN IIb progenitor. We suggest that some rapidly evolving transients can be explained by such a weak explosion of the progenitors with little hydrogen-rich envelope., Comment: 11 pages, 15 figures. We perform hydrodynamical simulations of the interaction between supernova (SN) ejecta and circumstellar medium (CSM) for SN 1993J and SN 2011dh, and calculate the radio and X-ray emissions expected from the shocked gas at late epochs ($t$). Considering the ejecta structure from multi-group radiation hydrodynamics simulation, we find that the observed rapid drop in radio and X-ray light curves of SN 1993J at $t>$3000 days can be due to a change in the mass-loss rate ($\dot M$) around $\sim$6500 years prior to the explosion of the SN. The exact epoch scales inversely with the assumed wind velocity of $v_{\rm w}=10~ km~s^{-1}$. The progenitor of this SN very likely belonged to a binary system, where, during its evolution, the primary had transferred material to the secondary. It is argued in the paper that the change in $\dot M$ can happen because of a change in the mass accretion efficiency ($\eta$) of the companion star. It is possible that before $\sim6500~(v_{\rm w}/10~km~s^{-1})^{-1}$years prior to the explosion, $\eta$ was high, thus the CSM was tenuous, which causes the late time downturn in fluxes. In the case of SN 2011dh, the late time evolution is found to be consistent with a wind medium with $\dot M/v_{\rm w}=4\times10^{-6 }~M_{\odot}~ yr^{-1}/10 ~{km ~s^{-1}}$. It is difficult from our analysis to predict whether the progenitor of this SN had a binary companion, however, if future observations show similar decrease in radio and X-ray fluxes, then that would give strong support to a scenario where both SNe had undergone similar kind of binary evolution before explosion., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures; Accepted for publication in ApJ

We investigate a simplified kinetic system of the hydrogen atom (two levels plus continuum) under conditions of a type IIP supernova at the plateau phase that realistically describes the basic properties of the complete system. We have found the Lyapunov function for the reduced system using which we have analytically obtained the ionization freeze-out effect on long time scales. Since the system completely recombines in the equilibrium approximation on long time scales, which does not occur in reality, this result confirms the necessity of allowance for the time-dependent effect in the kinetics during the photospheric phase in a supernova explosion., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1707.02177, arXiv:1906.11206

We calculate the evolution of massive stars, which undergo pulsational pair-instability (PPI) when the O-rich core is formed. The evolution from the main-sequence through the onset of PPI is calculated for stars with the initial masses of $80 - 140$ $M_{\odot}$ and metallicities of $Z = 10^{-3} - 1.0$ $Z_\odot$. Because of mass loss, $Z \leq 0.5$ $Z_\odot$ is necessary for stars to form He cores massive enough (i.e., mass $>40 ~M_\odot$) to undergo PPI. The hydrodynamical phase of evolution from PPI through the beginning of Fe core collapse is calculated for the He cores with masses of $40 - 62 ~M_\odot$ and $Z = 0$. During PPI, electron-positron pair production causes a rapid contraction of the O-rich core which triggers explosive O-burning and a pulsation of the core. We study the mass dependence of the pulsation dynamics, thermodynamics, and nucleosynthesis. The pulsations are stronger for more massive He cores and result in such a large amount of mass ejection such as $3 - 13$ $M_\odot$ for $40 - 62 ~M_\odot$ He cores. These He cores eventually undergo Fe-core collapse. The $64 ~M_\odot$ He core undergoes complete disruption and becomes a pair-instability supernova. The H-free circumstellar matter ejected around these He cores is massive enough for to explain the observed light curve of Type I (H-free) superluminous supernovae with circumstellar interaction. We present optical and ultraviolet observations of nearby type Ic supernova SN 2017ein as well as detailed analysis of its progenitor properties from both the early-time observations and the prediscovery Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images. The optical light curves started from within one day to $\sim$275 days after explosion, and optical spectra range from $\sim$2 days to $\sim$90 days after explosion. Compared to other normal SNe Ic like SN 2007gr and SN 2013ge, \mbox{SN 2017ein} seems to have more prominent C{\footnotesize II} absorption and higher expansion velocities in early phases, suggestive of relatively lower ejecta mass. The earliest photometry obtained for \mbox{SN 2017ein} show indications of shock cooling. The best-fit obtained by including a shock cooling component gives an estimate of the envelope mass as $\sim$0.02 M$_{\odot}$ and stellar radius as 8$\pm$4 R$_{\odot}$. Examining the pre-explosion images taken with the HST WFPC2, we find that the SN position coincides with a luminous and blue point-like source, with an extinction-corrected absolute magnitude of M$_V$$\sim$$-$8.2 mag and M$_I$$\sim$$-$7.7 mag.Comparisons of the observations to the theoretical models indicate that the counterpart source was either a single WR star or a binary with whose members had high initial masses, or a young compact star cluster. We present nearly self-consistent stellar-halo models of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy associated with the Milky Way galaxy. Such galaxies are dominated by dark matter and have almost no gas in the system. Therefore, they are excellent objects for N-body modeling that takes into account visible and dark matter halo components. In order to model the dark matter halo inferred from the analysis of the measured velocities of Fornax's stars, we constructed several self-consistent quasi-equilibrium models based on two source code sets. One of them (GalactICS Software, NEMO) deals with the self-consistent distribution function modeling which depends on energy $E$ and vertical component of the angular momentum $L_z$. The other is included in the AGAMA framework and is based on Schwarzschild's calculation of orbits. It can reproduce the non-spherical self-consistent structure of Fornax as the weighted sum of orbit contributions to the galactic density even though the inferred dark halo parameters come from Jeans analysis which does not require that any distribution functions should be positive. To guess the parameters which make the N-body models close to the visible object we use the stellar-dark matter model of the Fornax galaxy based on hydrodynamic axisymmetric Jeans equations taking into account the velocity anisotropy parameter. Then we studied the evolution of the models by performing N-body simulations with the falcON code in order to test their stability. The variability of the model parameters over time was obtained during simulations. The paper presents a numerical implementation of the Green’s function method for calculating the spatial distribution of the macroscopic number of free electrons in a finite system. The obtained results are compared with the results obtained by direct summation of the wave functions. The quantitative coincidence is demonstrated.

The physical origin of Type-I (hydrogen-less) superluminous supernovae (SLSNe-I), whose luminosities are 10 to 500 times higher than normal core-collapse supernovae, remains still unknown. Thanks to their brightness, SLSNe-I would be useful probes of distant Universe. For the power source of the light curves of SLSNe-I, radioactive-decays, magnetars, and circumstellar interactions have been proposed, although no definitive conclusions have been reached yet. Since most of light curve studies have been based on simplified semi-analytic models, we have constructed multi-color light curve models by means of detailed radiation hydrodynamical calculations for various mass of stars including very massive ones and large amount of mass loss. We compare the rising time, peak luminosity, width, and decline rate of the model light curves with observations of SLSNe-I and obtain constraints on their progenitors and explosion mechanisms. We particularly pay attention to the recently reported double peaks of the light curves. We discuss how to discriminate three models, relevant models parameters, their evolutionary origins, and implications for the early evolution of the Universe.

Astrophysical research at the Institute for Theoretical and Experimental Physics (ITEP) is examined historically over a period of more than 30 years. The primary focus is on the supernova problem, starting with how it was approached in the classical pioneering work of Imshennik and Nadyozhin and ending with present-day models of these most powerful star explosions in the Universe. The paper also reviews work in other areas of astrophysics, including chemical nucleosynthesis, the cosmological use of type-IIn supernovae and dark matter models. The paper was written as a contribution to the 70th anniversary of ITEP.

Type Ia supernovae produce very powerful burst of light, which can be observed to high redshift. This fact is very attractive for cosmological applications. For supernova light curve modeling, it is very important to know the amount of Fe and Ni, formed during the explosion. In this paper, we explore both the chemical composition of the ejected supernova shells and the possibility of weak r-process under increased neutron excess number based on a set of trajectories of tracer particles, calculated in a hydrodynamic model of SNIa explosion. It is shown that no r-process elements are synthesized in the considered supernova model, even for an increased neutron excess number (Ye ∼ 0.4) because of the slow evolution of temperature and density along chosen trajectories. The results of explosive nucleosynthesis are discussed.

A Pulsational Pair-instability supernova (PPISN) evolves from a massive star with a mass $\sim 80$ -- 140 $M_{\odot}$ which develops the electron-positron pair-instability after the hydrostatic He-burning in the core has finished. In [Leung et al., ApJ 887, 72 (2019)] (Paper I) we examined the evolutionary tracks and the pulsational mass loss history of this class of stars. In this paper, we analyze the thermodynamical history to explore the neutrino observables of PPISNe. We compute the neutrino light curves and spectra during pulsation. We study the detailed neutrino emission profiles of these stars. Then, we estimate the expected neutrino detection count for different terrestrial neutrino detectors including, e.g., KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande. Finally, we compare the neutrino pattern of PPISN with other types of supernovae based on a canonical 10 kt detector. The predicted neutrino signals can provide the early warning for the telescopes to trace for the early time optical signals. We draw attention to recent high explosive (HE) experiments which provide compression of macroscopic amount of matter to high, even record, values of pressure in comparison with other HE experiments. The observed bounce after the compression corresponds to processes in core-collapse supernova explosions after neutrino trapping. Conditions provided in the experiments resemble those in core-collapse supernovae, permitting their use for laboratory astrophysics. A unique feature of the experiments is compression at low entropy. The values of specific entropy are close to those obtained in numerical simulations during the process of collapse in supernova explosions, and much lower than those obtained at laser ignition facilities, another type of high-compression experiment. Both in supernovae and HE experiments the bounce occurs at low entropy, so the HE experiments provide a new platform to realize some supernova collapse effects in laboratory, especially to study hydrodynamics of collapsing flows and the bounce. An increasing number of so-called superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) are discovered. It is believed that at least some of them with slowly fading light curves originate in stellar explosions induced by the pair instability mechanism. Recent stellar evolution models naturally predict pair instability supernovae (PISNe) from very massive stars at wide range of metallicities (up to Z=0.006, Yusof et al. 2013). In the scope of this study we analyse whether PISN models can match the observational properties of SLSNe with various light curve shapes. Specifically, we explore the influence of different degrees of macroscopic chemical mixing in PISN explosive products on the resulting observational properties. We artificially apply mixing to the 250 Msun PISN evolutionary model from Kozyreva et al. (2014) and explore its supernova evolution with the one-dimensional radiation hydrodynamics code STELLA. The greatest success in matching SLSN observations is achieved in the case of an extreme macroscopic mixing, where all radioactive material is ejected into the hydrogen-helium outer layer. Such an extreme macroscopic redistribution of chemicals produces events with faster light curves with high photospheric temperatures and high photospheric velocities. These properties fit a wider range of SLSNe than non-mixed PISN model. Our mixed models match the light curves, colour temperature and photospheric velocity evolution of two well-observed SLSNe PTF12dam and LSQ12dlf. However, these models' extreme chemical redistribution may be hard to realise in massive PISNe. HD 49798/RX J0648.0--4418 is a peculiar X-ray binary with a hot subdwarf (sdO) mass donor. The nature of the accreting compact object is not known, but its spin period $P=13.2$~s and $\dot P =-2.15 \times 10^{-15}$s~s$^{-1}$, prove that it can be only either a white dwarf or a neutron star. The spin-up has been very stable for more than 20 years. We demonstrate that the continuous stable spin-up of the compact companion of HD 49798 can be best explained by contraction of a young white dwarf with an age $\sim 2$~Myrs. This allows us to interpret all the basic parameters of the system in the framework of an accreting white dwarf. We present examples of binary evolution which result in such systems. We study the evolution and final outcome of long-lived (${\approx}10^5$ years) remnants from the merger of a He white dwarf (WD) with a more massive C/O or O/Ne WD. Using Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics ($\texttt{MESA}$), we show that these remnants have a red giant configuration supported by steady helium burning, adding mass to the WD core until it reaches $M_{\rm core}\approx 1.12-1.20 M_\odot$. At that point, the base of the surface convection zone extends into the burning layer, mixing the helium burning products (primarily carbon and magnesium) throughout the convective envelope. Further evolution depletes the convective envelope of helium, and dramatically slows the mass increase of the underlying WD core. The WD core mass growth re-initiates after helium depletion, as then an uncoupled carbon burning shell is ignited and proceeds to burn the fuel from the remaining metal-rich extended envelope. For large enough initial total merger masses, O/Ne WD cores would experience electron-capture triggered collapse to neutron stars (NSs) after growing to near Chandrasekhar mass ($M_{\rm Ch}$). Massive C/O WD cores could suffer the same fate after a carbon-burning flame converts them to O/Ne. The NS formation would release ${\approx}10^{50}$ ergs into the remaining extended low mass envelope. Using the STELLA radiative transfer code, we predict the resulting optical light curves from these exploded envelopes. Reaching absolute magnitudes of $M_V\approx -17$, these transients are bright for about one week, and have many features of the class of luminous, rapidly evolving transients studied by Drout and collaborators., 12 pages, 9 Figures, 1 Table

The importance of allowance for the time-dependent effect in the kinetics at the photospheric phase during a supernova explosion has been confirmed by several independent research groups. The time-dependent effect provides a higher degree of hydrogen ionization in comparison with the steady-state solutions and strengthens the H$\alpha$ line in the resulting simulated spectrum, with the intensity of the effect increasing with time. However, some researchers argue that the time-dependent ionization effect is unimportant. Its allowance leads to an insignificant strengthening of H$\alpha$ in their modeling only in the first days after explosion. We have demonstrated the importance of the time-dependent effect with the models of SN 1999em as an example using the new original LEVELS software package. The role of a number of factors that can weaken the time-dependent effect has been checked. We have confirmed that the intensity of the effect is affected by the abundance of metal admixtures in the envelope, while the addition of extra levels to themodel hydrogen atom weakens the time-dependent effect to a lesser degree and never removes it completely.

Upcoming high-cadence transient survey programmes will produce a wealth of observational data for Type Ia supernovae. These data sets will contain numerous events detected very early in their evolution, shortly after explosion. Here, we present synthetic light curves, calculated with the radiation hydrodynamical approach Stella for a number of different explosion models, specifically focusing on these first few days after explosion. We show that overall the early light curve evolution is similar for most of the investigated models. Characteristic imprints are induced by radioactive material located close to the surface. However, these are very similar to the signatures expected from ejecta-CSM or ejecta-companion interaction. Apart from the pure deflagration explosion models, none of our synthetic light curves exhibit the commonly assumed power-law rise. We demonstrate that this can lead to substantial errors in the determination of the time of explosion. In summary, we illustrate with our calculations that even with very early data an identification of specific explosion scenarios is challenging, if only photometric observations are available., 15 pages, 14 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Type IIP supernova progenitors are often surrounded by dense circumstellar media that may result from mass-loss enhancement of the progenitors shortly before their explosions. Previous light-curve studies suggest that the mass-loss rates are enhanced up to ~ 0.1 Msun/yr, assuming a constant wind velocity. However, density of circumstellar media at the immediate stellar vicinity can be much higher than previously inferred for a given mass-loss rate if wind acceleration is taken into account. We show that the wind acceleration has a huge impact when we estimate mass-loss rates from early light curves of Type IIP supernovae by taking SN 2013fs as an example. We perform numerical calculations of the interaction between supernova ejecta and circumstellar media with a constant mass-loss rate but with a beta-law wind velocity profile. We find that the mass-loss rate of the progenitor of SN 2013fs shortly before the explosion, which was inferred to be ~ 0.1 Msun/yr with a constant wind velocity of 10 km/s by a previous light-curve modeling, can be as low as ~ 1e-3 Msun/yr with the same terminal wind velocity of 10 km/s but with a wind velocity profile with beta ~ 5. In both cases, the mass of the circumstellar medium is similar (~ 0.5 Msun). Therefore, the beginning of the progenitor's mass-loss enhancement in our interpretation is ~ 100 years before the explosion, not several years.
