This chapter examines the unequal impact of COVID-19 on individuals, communities, and nations, a fact often suppressed or invisible. Economic inequality between and within nations significantly contributes to the chances of contracting and dying from the coronavirus. Developing nations with weak healthcare systems, workers whose jobs cannot be performed remotely, the differences between those with and without access to soap and water to wash their hands, and the ability to practice social distancing also account for the unequal impact of the coronavirus. Racial and ethnic minorities experience higher death rates from COVID-19, which has also unequally affected Indigenous peoples and urban and foreign migrants around the world. Inequality is also embedded in international responses to COVID-19, as giving and receiving aid is often impacted by inequalities of national power and influence, resulting in global competition rather than the collaboration needed to end the pandemic. © 2021 selection and editorial matter, J. The hijra (eunuch/transvestite) is an institutionalized third gender role in India. Hijra are neither male nor female, but contain elements of both. As devotees of the Mother Goddess Bahuchara Mata, their sacred powers are contingent upon their sexuality. In reality, however, many hijras are prostitutes. This sexual activity undermines their culturally valued sacred role. This paper discusses religious meanings of the hijra role, as well as the ways in which individuals and the community deal with the conflicts engendered by their sexual activity.

Museums are important sites of national cultural production, collective memory making, and the construction of national narratives. Contemporary South Africa is a particularly interesting place to study these processes. With the demise of apartheid, South Africa faces the difficult challenge of creating a new national identity that incorporates an examination of past oppression yet leaves the way open for building a national identity that incorporates all its diverse groups. The museums reviewed below, the Robben Island Prison Museum, the District Six Museum in Capetown, and the Kwa Muhle local history museum in Durban all make important contributions to this process.

During the 1987 Iran/Contra hearings, Senator George J. Mitchell of Maine spoke eloquently about the importance of the rule of law in a culturally pluralistic nation like the United States:Most nations derive from a single tribe or a single race. They practice a single religion. Common racial, ethnic, and religious heritages are the glue of nationhood for many.The United States is different. We have all races, all religions, a limited common heritage. The glue of nationhood for us is the American ideal of individual liberty and equal justice.The rule of law is critical in our society. The law is the great equalizer, because everybody in America is equal before the law.The students we teach live in what is certainly one of the most culturally pluralistic cities, and nations, in the world. They are increasingly part of a society in which this pluralism affects them either as members of cultural minorities, or as members of the so-called dominant culture who interact with many different cultural groups. As a cultural anthropologist and a political scientist teaching in a college with a focus on law and justice, we felt it important to bring to our students a deeper understanding of the possibilities and problems of cultural pluralism in a democratic, constitutional society. While Senator Mitchell's words surely express a fundamental ideal in American society, how closely these words express the reality experienced in American society is a question that had long interested us.

The author describes three exercises that can be used to encourage active participation in cultural anthropology classes: use of a puzzle to demonstrate focal issues about culture; discussion of a specific piece of fieldwork to demonstrate the relationships among fieldwork, ethics, and cultural relativity; and use of study questions in ethnographic films to allow students actively to discuss issues.

Traditional approaches to the analysis and design of urban systems disregard social and cultural factors, resulting in a substantial gap between the anticipated and actual performance of many urban services. This paper presents anthropological case studies showing how cultural values, perceptions of time and space, and informal social relations influence the operation of urban services.
