BACKGROUND: The Collaborative Outcome study on Health and Functioning during Infection Times (COH-FIT; www.coh-fit.com) is an anonymous and global online survey measuring health and functioning during the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of this study was to test concurrently the validity of COH-FIT items and the internal validity of the co-primary outcome, a composite psychopathology "P-score". METHODS: The COH-FIT survey has been translated into 30 languages (two blind forward-translations, consensus, one independent English back-translation, final harmonization). To measure mental health, 1-4 items ("COH-FIT items") were extracted from validated questionnaires (e.g. Patient Health Questionnaire 9). COH-FIT items measured anxiety, depressive, post-traumatic, obsessive-compulsive, bipolar and psychotic symptoms, as well as stress, sleep and concentration. COH-FIT Items which correlated r ≥ 0.5 with validated companion questionnaires, were initially retained. A P-score factor structure was then identified from these items using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) on data split into training and validation sets. Consistency of results across languages, gender and age was assessed. RESULTS: From >150,000 adult responses by May 6th, 2022, a subset of 22,456 completed both COH-FIT items and validated questionnaires. Concurrent validity was consistently demonstrated across different languages for COH-FIT items. CFA confirmed EFA results of five first-order factors (anxiety, depression, post-traumatic, psychotic, psychophysiologic symptoms) and revealed a single second-order factor P-score, with high internal reliability (ω = 0.95). Factor structure was consistent across age and sex. CONCLUSIONS: COH-FIT is a valid instrument to globally measure mental health during infection times. In the last 20 years, computer technology has developed rapidly, and internet-based social networks (e.g. Facebook, Instagram, WeChat, or Twitter) have proliferated even faster, becoming a very important part of people's lives. But in recent years, a dependence to these sites has emerged, called by many authors social media addiction. In the present study, we aim to analyze if there really is an addiction to social media networks, what are its demographic aspects, which are the health problems that occur in these addicted people, and how to intervene therapeutically in these cases. Currently, social media addiction is not recognized as a disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, but is considered more of a behavioral addiction or a subtype of Internet addiction. If we look at this matter from an anthropological and philosophical point of view, such type of addiction can originate in what is related to the specificity of man in the contemporary world. Symptoms of excessive use of SM networks may include decreased ability to concentrate and decreased academic performance, insomnia, altered self-perception, decreased self-esteem, anxiety, depressed mood, and psycho-emotional lability. SM addiction prevention strategies should be implemented based on behavioral risk factors and demographic characteristics. The goal of treatment for this type of addiction, unlike other addictions, is not total abstinence, but rather controlled use of social networks, and relapse prevention should use strategies based on cognitive-behavioral therapies.

In the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic, healthcare workers are at high risk to be infected with this new coronavirus, particularly when they handle not only patients, but also their body fluids. In Romania, even though the protective measures to be used by medical staff in emergency departments, clinical departments, radiology departments, clinical laboratories and morgues services are well known, there is little information about the protection of medical staff in the laboratories of cytopathology and histopathology. In this article, we will discuss the transmission routes of the new coronavirus, the surfaces it could contaminate in a hospital, as well as the modalities of its inactivation. We will present some guidelines for preparing the pathology departments to face the pandemic situation like the present one. Also, we will point out some possible recommendations/suggestions for protective measures to be taken by laboratory staff during the cytological and histopathological procedures when they manipulate body fluids or surgical samples of patients with suspected or confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Laboratory personnel should be aware that any body fluid or surgical specimen that arrives in the laboratory may contain SARS-CoV-2 and, as such, they should act after new working procedures. We recommend restraint from performing extemporaneous examination (smear and frozen section) and cytopathological examination in laboratories that do not have adequate condition for handling and processing Hazard Group 3 (HG3) pathogens, as SARS-CoV-2. Also, laboratory personnel should pay attention to instruments, technical equipment, or environmental surfaces as these also can be contaminated with the new coronavirus.

Meningiomas are the most common dural tumour, but there are also many other dural masses which mimic their appearances, such as neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions. In this paper we report another mass which may mimic a dural lesion, namely a muscle graft harvested from the temporal site and left in situ, used to achieve haemostasis in a posttraumatic temporal extradural hematoma in a young male patient. Solid knowledge of differentiating neuroimaging characteristics of dural masses, as well as its corroboration with the patient’s medical history are extremely helpful in establishing an accurate diagnostic.

Background Intracranial meningiomas are brain tumors that have probably been known the longest, largely because of the occasional production of grotesque cranial deformities that have attracted the attention and interest of humankind. Because of the tendency of some intracranial meningiomas to cause skull deformation and thickening, these tumors have given rise to various speculations and theories related to their origin, starting in prehistoric times up to the present. Methods From the Steinheim skull and “pharaonic meningiomas” to the first meningioma monograph and the first explanations of Harvey Cushing regarding the mechanism of hyperostosis, this review aims to weave again the story of Arachne. We identify the main contributors who have tried to understand and explain the tendency of some of these tumors to cause hyperostosis or other skull bone involvements. Conclusions The contribution of neurosurgeons or pathologists over the centuries is of undeniable importance and is the basis for understanding future molecular mechanisms.

Beginning with the thirteenth century, the papacy has exerted an important role in the development of anatomy and medical sciences through the protection and support provided to anatomists, who were in most cases the personal physicians of the popes as well. The work is intended to be a lesson of anatomy of Papal tiara, presenting the most important contributing popes, the anatomists-physicians whom they supported and protected and the relations between papacy and medical sciences.

There are numerous articles on the discovery of this arterial polygon, its history being quite long, beginning with the Antiquity and up to the Modern Era. Making an analysis of the primary and secondary sources on this topic, the purpose of this article is to identify the significant moments of the discovery of this arterial polygon, which is an anatomical structure with great importance for neurologists and neurosurgeons. We will present the contributions to this topic from Renaissance and early Modern Era anatomists, such as Andreas Vesalius, Jean Fernel, Gabriel Fallopius, Giulio Cesare Casseri, Adriaan van den Spiegel, Johann Vesling, and Johann Jakob Wepfer von Schaffhausen. We also pointed out that the contribution of the famous British anatomist Sir Thomas Willis (1621-1675) was the most important one. He published De Cerebri Anatome, in 1664, in which he described the vascular arrangement laying at the base of the brain, accompanying it by the exquisite drawings of Christopher Wren. Thus, he demonstrated to the medical world that he had reached the greatest understanding of the structure and function of the circular arterial anastomosis. For this excellent discovery, his followers honored him by giving his name to this arterial circle.

International audience; Brainstem is one of the most complex structures of the human body, and has the most complex intracranial anatomy, which makes surgery at this level the most difficult. Due to its hidden position, the brainstem became known later by anatomists, and moreover, brainstem surgery cannot be understood without knowing the evolution of ideas in neuroanatomy, neuropathology, and neuroscience. Starting from the first attempts at identifying brainstem anatomy in prehistory and antiquity, the history of brainstem discoveries and approach may be divided into four periods: macroscopic anatomy, microscopic anatomy and neurophysiology, posterior fossa surgery, and brainstem surgery. From the first trepanning of the posterior fossa and later finger surgery, to the occurrence of safe entry zones, this paper aims to review how neuroanatomy and brainstem surgery were understood historically, and how the surgical technique evolved from Galen of Pergamon up to the twenty-first century.

Even if meningiomas are the most common radio-induced tumors that occur in the adult population, the epidemiology of these types of tumors after Chernobyl nuclear accident, is still unclear. This paper aims to determine the tumoral behavior of intracranial meningiomas in North-Eastern Romania, affected by the radioactive cloud from Chernobyl nuclear accident , over a period of 25 years, namely between 1990 and 2015. Our research consists of an analytical, observational, cohort-based and retrospective study, conducted in Prof. Dr. N. Oblu Clinical Emergency Hospital of Iasi, Romania, on a group of 1287 patients diagnosed with intracranial meningiomas and operated between 1990 and 2015. In these period there was an increased number of intracranial meningiomas, with first peak between 1993-1996 and the second peak between 2007-2015, corresponding to 7-10 years and 21-30 years, after the Chernobyl accident. Regarding the annual frequency of histopathologic grading, for grade I meningiomas there were no trend or cyclicity of the cases diagnosed each year, but for grade II and III meningiomas there were an ascending trend in the period 1996-2000, that corresponds to the 10-14 years from the Chernobyl accident.

Human amniotic membrane (hAM) allows the exchange of water and organic and inorganic substances between the amniotic fluid, the fetus, and the maternal circulation. Our paper is aimed at determining the chemical composition of the amniotic membrane and at comparing it with the chemical structure of the tears, in order to identify possible uses of the amniotic membrane in eye surgery. In order to determine the chemical composition of hAM we sampled 7 pieces of fresh amniotic membrane, which were processed to create cell homogenate. The chemical tests run on the amniotic membrane specimens in our research revealed the following values: mean glucose concentration = 3mg/100mL and mean total protein concentration = 0.07g/100mL; the electrolyte concentration was: Na+ =152 mEq/L; K+=5.74 mEq/L; Cl- =131.6 mEq/L, and pH=7.2, whereas the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) = 1.1�0.1 mmol/L. These values are similar to those determined by other authors for the amniotic membrane, which resemble those reported for the chemical composition of tear and aqueous humor. To conclude with, the human amniotic membrane is a useful biological material in ophthalmological transplant.

Given that bone consolidation (callus formation) has two important phases in terms of vascular factors, the inflammatory phase and the vascular invasion phase, on the one hand, and, the existence of biologically active compounds in the composition of wine (compounds that influence inflammation and vascular development), on the other hand, we can conclude that there is definitely a link between wine consumption and bone consolidation or bone structure. Considering the idea stated above, in conducting our research we have pursued the following objectives: to set thresholds for defining occasional and chronic alcohol consumption, according to literature; to investigate how chronic or occasional wine consumption and non-consumption influence bone quality; to investigate how chronic or occasional wine consumption and non-consumption influence the conformation of trajectories of distal radius fractures (DFRs); to investigate the secondary displacement of DFRs in chronic or occasional wine consumers and nonconsumers; to determine the phenolic composition for a number of five wines of designated origin. There is certainly a positive influence in the bone consolidation process in people who chronically or occasionally consume wine compared to the other population groups. The substantial accumulation of phenolic compounds in red wines recommends their consumption for curative purposes.

The identification and management of common work-related stressors is important for improving the performance of health-care specialists and also for providing high-quality patient care.

Since ancient times, physicians of antiquity noted the occurrence of priapism in some spinal cord injuries. Although priests saw it as a consequence of curses and witchcraft, after clinical observations of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, the first medical hypotheses emerged in the 17th-19th centuries completed and argued by neuroscience and neurology developed in the European laboratories and hospitals. This study aims to present a short overview of the history of clinical observations of posttraumatic male priapism after spinal cord injuries since antiquity until the beginning of the 20th century.

Purpose The optic chiasm is an essential structure located at the skull base that stirred over time the curiosity of anatomists, who became more and more interested in its structure and function. Through centuries, the optic chiasm was viewed as a vessel crossing, a way of transporting tears secreted by the brain to the eye, integrating images, or responsible for coordinated eye movements. The paper aims to overview the history of understanding the optic chiasm from the beginnings of antiquity to the twentieth century. Methods We reviewed the literature and studied all the historical sources on optic chiasm and eyes in the works of ancient, medieval, Renaissance authors, and the seventeenth to nineteenth century works. Results The optic chiasm is a structure that fascinated ancient anatomists and made them develop various theories on its function. In terms of function, the optic chiasm had a history based more on speculation, the seventeenth century bringing its first understanding and reaching the peak in the nineteenth century with the understanding of the anatomical structure of the chiasm and its role in the visual process. Conclusion The history of the optic chiasm is a fascinating time travel displaying the conceptual transformations that have been made in anatomy and medicine by our forerunners.

For a long time, because of its location at the skull base level, the sphenoid bone was rather mysterious as it was too difficult for anatomists to reach and to elucidate its true configuration. The configuration of the sphenoid bone led to confusion regarding its sutures with the other skull bones, its shape, its detailed anatomy, and the vascular and nervous structures that cross it. This article takes the reader on a journey through time and space, charting the evolution of anatomists' comprehension of sphenoid bone morphology from antiquity to its conception as a bone structure in the eighteenth century, and ranging from ancient Greece to modern Italy and France. The journey illustrates that many anatomists have attempted to name and to best describe the structural elements of this polymorphous bone.

Methylene blue (MB) has many uses in medicine, being applied as a treatment for infections, malaria, methemoglobinemia, as a dye for diagnosis and for staining of cells, tissues and bacteria. In elderly patients with associated high anaesthetic risk, dacryocystectomy is an alternative to dacryocystorhinostomy. This is an observational clinical study for two cases of chronic dacryocystitis where dacryocystectomy combined with MB (1%) staining of lacrimal sac was performed. Case no.1 - an 81-year old female patient with arterial hypertension, atherosclerosis, pulmonary fibrosis, and lower limb varices complainted of recurrent epiphora, muco-purulent secretions in both eyes, inflammatory oedema of the left perisacular region for the past 6 months. Case no. 2 - a 74-year old female patient with hypothyroidism suffered from chronic epiphora in the left eye with a purple-red oedema of the inferior eyelid and perisacular region. Symptoms reoccurred in the last 10 months despite topical and systemic therapy with antibiotics and anti-inflamatory drugs. Dacryocystectomy was performed under local anaesthesia in both patients. MB (1%) was used to irrigate the lacrimal sac in order to facilitate its localisation, dissection and excision. Results: Case no.1. Ectopic lacrimal sac. Case no.2. Enlarged lacrimal sac (7.5/14 mm). The histopathological examination revealed a trachomatous dacryocystitis, respectively a chronic non-suppurative non-granulomatous dacryocystitis. Their postoperative evolution was without complications, except for a mild epiphora. In conclusion, dacryocystectomy appears to be a less traumatising alternative to dacryocystorhinostomy. The staining of the lacrimal sac with MB (1%) in dacryocystectomy facilitates its identification and dissection, especially when it is ectopic.

The Holy Bible is a book full of sacred precepts and not a medical encyclopedia as it was written in the context of that age, and in a language that had to be understood by people of that era. This paper aims to give a short presentation of several diseases of the spine mentioned in the Holy Scripture in order to identify the most common disease among the Jews during biblical times and attempts to provide their diagnosis.

Background: The involvement of falx cerebri in tuberculosis is extremely rare, with only three cases reported so far in the literature. The diagnosis is most often difficult to establish, given the location of the lesion, making surgical intervention necessary for a definite histopathologic diagnosis. Methods: We present the case of a 49-year old female patient who was admitted for a right jacksonian seizure, followed by a right crural monoparesis, without a history of tuberculosis. The lesion mimicked a falx cerebri en plaque meningioma in the imaging tests. Results: A complete surgical excision was performed through a left fronto-parietal parasagittal approach. The histopathological examination revealed a case of cerebral tuberculosis. The surgical treatment was complemented postoperatively with antituberculous therapy. Conclusion: In this article, we emphasize the rarity of the lesion at this level and also presenting similar cases from the literature. Moreover, we also discuss epidemiological, clinical, imaging, therapeutic as well as pathological aspects of en-plaque dural tuberculoma.

Thus, through their apparel, the Romans influenced the Terminologia Anatomica and "clothed" the structures of the brain and spinal cord, making them immortal. Clin. Myasthenia gravis is one of the neurological diseases with a relatively recent history, full of mistakes, in which the British and German neurology schools have attempted to find answers when confronted with the unknown. The paper aims at making a historical account of the disease from its discovery in the 16th century, when the first case of myasthenia gravis was medically diagnosed, to the beginning of the 20th century, when the dawn of modern therapy started to show.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a multifactorial disease and is a major cause of blindness in the entire world. Current studies show a tight connection between gut microbiota and AMD. This literature review shows the positive role played by gut microbiota, which is essential in providing the optimal serotonin level in retina protection against the noxious action of various factors of the environment. Serotonin or 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) is a monoamine neurotransmitter derived from tryptophan which is poorly expressed in the retina, but it may provide protection against retinal damage, such as light-induced retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration, due to the fact that certain serotonin receptor agonists and antagonists of those 7 classes and 17 subtypes of 5-HT receptors help prevent serum deprivation, anoxia and oxidative damage. Our study also shows the role played by other diet-related factors, which protect retina against oxidative stress and delay the onset of AMD.
