2. Observation of a Spinning Top in a Bose-Einstein Condensate

Abstract

Boundaries strongly affect the behavior of quantized vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates, a phenomenon particularly evident in elongated cigar-shaped traps where vortices tend to orient along a short direction to minimize energy. Remarkably, contributions to the angular momentum of these vortices are tightly confined to the region surrounding the core, in stark contrast to untrapped condensates where all atoms contribute $\hbar$. We develop a theoretical model and use this, in combination with numerical simulations, to show that such localized vortices precess in an analogous manner to that of a classical spinning top. We experimentally verify this spinning-top behavior with our real-time imaging technique that allows for the tracking of position and orientation of vortices as they dynamically evolve. Finally, we perform an in-depth numerical investigation of our real-time expansion and imaging method, with the aim of guiding future experimental implementation, as well as outlining directions for its improvement., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

We present a compact source of cold sodium atoms suitable for the production of quantum degenerate gases and versatile for a multi-species experiment. The magnetic field produced by permanent magnets allows to simultaneously realize a Zeeman slower and a two-dimensional MOT within an order of magnitude smaller length than standard sodium sources. We achieve an atomic flux exceeding 4x10^9 atoms/s loaded in a MOT, with a most probable longitudinal velocity of 20 m/s, and a brightness larger than 2.5x10^(12) atoms/s/sr. This atomic source allowed us to produce a pure BEC with more than 10^7 atoms and a background pressure limited lifetime of 5 minutes., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. A

Abstract

Villa dei Misteri, one of the most famous domus in the ancient city of Pompeii, was protected by building reinforced concrete frames roofs; in recent years timber and steel struc- tures have been preferred. The evaluation of their health status requires a detailed study by means of a multidisciplinary approach, which should include geometrical surveys, damage assessment based on both in situ and laboratory diagnostic tests, UAV (Unmanned Aerial Ve- hicles) remote sensing to inspect area and coverings not easy to reach in safe, etc. In this pa- per the preliminary results of ambient vibration measurement, as basis for seismic safety assessment are presented. The evaluation of the structural capacity, to be compared to the seismic hazard at the site, is not easy due to the presence of quite different elements, such as the original masonry walls, the concrete frame roofs as well as wooden and steel structures. 15 seismometers connected to a recorder were used in two different layouts. The first one was used to analyse the dynamic characteristic of the soil with the underground structures and the effects of the trench, which surrounds the Villa at three sides In the second layout sensors were deployed on the structural elements of the coverings to analyse their behaviour and the interaction with the original masonry walls.

Abstract

A comparative approach to neotectonic studies is presented, which encompasses the integration of geochemical, morphological and structural analyses. Nine-hundred-nine-teen soil gas samples were collected in the Era basin (Tuscany, Central Italy) and their helium contents were measured. Helium distribution has been compared with location and orientation of known brittle deformations (faults and fractures) and morphological features obtained by air-photo interpretation and drainage network analyses. Obtained data were statistically compared by means of rose dia-gram plots concerning the investigated parameters and locally studied by associating the observed helium anomaly ridges with the known morphological and structural elements. The statistical approach showed a good convergence between the applied methodologies. Data from geomorphological, mesostructural, and geochemical surveys are consistent with the NE-SW and NW-SE orientations, i.e. Apennine and anti-Apennine trend of the known structural pattern. Moreover the apparent N-S and E-W trending helium anomalies are thought to be due to the Middle Pleistocene deformation phase along these directions. The relationship between helium distribution and the strain field is strengthen by the good correspondence, at local scale, among geochemical data and results of the structural and geomorphological features (Orciatico-Montecatini Val di Cecina and Peccioli areas). However helium soil gas technique showed to be a sensible tool for neotectonic studies in clay basin, as soil gas defines the leakage of deep seated gas along tectonic discontinuities even if they have no surface evidence and where the clay deposit is hundreds of meters thick.

Abstract

Benzotriazole forms complexes of different stoichiometries with amines and phenols. Four of them have been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The trends of donor-acceptor hydrogen-bond distances between corresponding molecular entities in the different complexes are related to induction-mediated cooperativity effects.
