This paper explores the transition between Compton Scattering and Inverse Compton Scattering (ICS), which is characterized by an equal exchange of energy and momentum between the colliding particles (electrons and photons). This regime has been called Symmetric Compton Scattering (SCS) and has the unique property of cancelling the energy-angle correlation of scattered photons, and, when the electron recoil is large, transferring mono-chromaticity from one colliding beam to the other, resulting in back-scattered photon beams that are intrinsically monochromatic. The paper suggests that large-recoil SCS or quasi-SCS can be used to design compact intrinsic monochromatic gamma-ray sources based on compact linacs, thus avoiding the use of GeV-class electron beams together with powerful laser/optical systems as those typically required for ICS sources.

This Document contains a complete technical description of the system devoted to the upgrade of the STAR Linear Accelerator (STAR Linac). According to the Contract signed between Universita della Calabria (UniCal) and Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN) on May 7th, 2021, INFN is committed to install, test and commission the upgrade of the STAR Linac denominated STAR-HE-Linac (STAR High Energy Linac), hereafter STAR-HEL. The technical components as well as the installation / test procedures and the ancillary equipment involved in such an upgrade are the object of this Document, named Complete Detailed Design Report. A technical offer was submitted by INFN in the frame of its participation to the tender issued by UniCal, describing a possible energy upgrade of the STAR Linac, with an electron beam energy boosted from 65 MeV up to 150 MeV by means of Radiofrequency (RF) accelerating sections and power stations based on S-band technology (ie, 2856 MHz RF frequency). Following the Contract signature, INFN conceived and conceptually designed a technology change that offers several advantages both on performances and on operational reliability of STAR-HEL, based on adopting C-band technology (ie, 5712 MHz RF frequency) for accelerating sections and RF power stations. Such a technology change was illustrated in a dedicated document named "improvement option for STAR-2 HE-Linac", addressed to UniCal STAR Management Board and tender R.U.P. for approval on June 9th, 2021. INFN received a formal letter of approval on June 16th, 2021.

One of the challenge of future muon colliders is the production of muon beams carrying high phase space densities. In particular the muon beam normalised transverse emittance is a relevant figure of merit to meet luminosity requests. A typical issue impacting the achieved transverse emittance in muon collider schemes so far considered is the phase space dilution caused by coulomb interaction of primary particles propagating into the target where muons are generated. In this study we present a new scheme for muon beam generation occurring in vacuum by interactions of electron and photon beams. Setting the center of mass energy at about twice the threshold (i.e. around $350$ MeV) the normalised emittance of the muon beam generated via muon pair production reaction ($e^-+\gamma \rightarrow e^-+\mu^+/\mu^-$) is largely independent on the emittance of the colliding electron beam and is set basically by the excess of transverse momentum in the muon pair creation. In absence of any other mechanism for emittance dilution, the resulting muon beam, with energy in the range of few tens of GeV, is characterised by an ultra-low normalised transverse rms emittance of a few nm rad, corresponding to a geometrical emittance below $10$ pm rad. This opens the way to a new muon collider paradigm based on muon sources conceived with primary colliding beams delivered by $100$ GeV-class energy recovery linacs interacting with hard-X ray free electron lasers. The challenge is to achieve the requested luminosity of the muon collider adopting a strategy of low muon fluxes/currents combined to ultra-low emittances, so to largely reduce also the levels of muon beam-induced background.

Fine time-resolved analysis of matter - i.e. spectroscopy and photon scattering - in the linear response regime requires a fs-scale pulsed, high repetition rate, fully coherent X-ray source. A seeded Free-Electron Laser (FEL) driven by a Super-Conducting Linac, generating $10^{8}$-$10^{10}$ coherent photons at 2-5 keV with abou 0.5 MHz of repetition rate, can address this need. The seeding scheme proposed is the Echo-Enabled Harmonic Generation, alimented by a FEL Oscillator working at 13.6 nm with a cavity based on Mo-Si mirrors. The whole chain of the X-ray generation is here described by means of start-to-end simulations. Comparisons with the Self Amplified Spontaneus Emission and a fresh-bunch harmonic cascade performed with similar electron beams show the validity of this scheme.

We discuss the possibility of creating novel research tools by producing and storing highly relativistic beams of highly ionised atoms in the CERN accelerator complex, and by exciting their atomic degrees of freedom with lasers to produce high-energy photon beams. Intensity of such photon beams would be by several orders of magnitude higher than offered by the presently operating light sources, in the particularly interesting gamma-ray energy domain of 0.1-400 MeV. In this energy range, the high-intensity photon beams can be used to produce secondary beams of polarised electrons, polarised positrons, polarised muons, neutrinos, neutrons and radioactive ions. We report on the optical commissioning of the high power laser beam circulator (LBC) for the high brightness Compton {\gamma}-ray source Extreme Light Infrastructure for Nuclear Physics. Tests aiming at demonstrating the optical performances of the LBC have been realized with a low-power pulsed laser-beam system and without electron beam. We show that, with the developed alignment and synchronization methods coming from the LBC design study presented in the Dupraz et al. paper [1], the LBC enhances the laser-beam power available at the interaction point (IP) by a factor in excess of 25. This corresponds to a potential of bringing the average laser-beam power in excess of 1 kW when the LBC is injected with the interaction point laser-beam pulse energy of 400 mJ at 100 Hz., Comment: 26 pages, 37 figures

PLATO has been selected and adopted by ESA as the third medium-class Mission (M3) of the Cosmic Vision Program, to be launched in 2026 with a Soyuz-Fregat rocket from the French Guiana. Its Payload is based on a suite of 26 telescopes and cameras in order to discover and characterise, thanks to ultra-high accurate photometry and the transits method, new exoplanets down to the range of Earth analogues. Each camera is composed of 4 CCDs working in full frame or frame-transfer mode. 24 cameras out of 26 host 4510 by 4510 pixels CCDs, operated in full-frame mode with a pixel depth of 16 bits and a cadence of 25 s. Given the huge data volume to be managed, the PLATO Payload relies on an efficient Data Processing System (DPS) whose Units perform images windowing, cropping and compression. Each camera and DPS Unit is connected to a fast SpaceWire network running at 100 MHz and interfaced to the satellite On-Board Computer by means of an Instrument Control Unit (ICU), performing data collection and compression.

PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars (PLATO) is a medium-class mission belonging to the European Space Agency (ESA) Cosmic Vision programme. The mission payload is composed of 26 telescopes and cameras which will observe uninterruptedly stars like our Sun in order to identify new exoplanets candidates down to the range of Earth analogues. The images from the cameras are generated by several distributed Digital Processing Units (DPUs) connected together in a SpaceWire network and producing a large quantity of data to be processed by the Instrument Control Unit. The paper presents the results of the analyses and simulations performed using the Simulator for HI-Speed Networks (SHINE) with the objective to assess the on-board data network performance.

The capability of Free-Electron Lasers to generate photon beams with record performances in the domain of MeV-class photon energy for nuclear photonics applications is here analyzed. We discuss possible nuclear FEL working points. Some typical situations are presented and simulated by means of the three-dimensional code GENESIS 1.3. The losses by spontaneous emission and by wakefield induced energy spread are then evaluated. The calculations show the possibility of generating FEL radiation at 1-4 MeV with less than 300 eV of bandwidth with not prohibitive set up requirements, achieving therefore regimes where no other kind of gamma ray sources could arrive.

Plasma driven particle accelerators represent the future of compact accelerating machines and Free Electron Lasers are going to benefit from these new technologies. One of the main issue of this new approach to FEL machines is the design of the transfer line needed to match of the electron-beam with the magnetic undulators. Despite the reduction of the chromaticity of plasma beams is one of the main goals, the target of this line is to be effective even in cases of beams with a considerable value of chromaticity. The method here explained is based on the code GIOTTO [1] that works using a homemade genetic algorithm and that is capable of finding optimal matching line layouts directly using a full 3D tracking code., Comment: 9 Pages, 4 Figures. In this paper, we report results of simulations, in the framework of both EuPRAXIA \cite{Walk2017} and EuPRAXIA@SPARC\_LAB \cite{Ferr2017} projects, aimed at delivering a high brightness electron bunch for driving a Free Electron Laser (FEL) by employing a plasma post acceleration scheme. The boosting plasma wave is driven by a tens of \SI{}{\tera\watt} class laser and doubles the energy of an externally injected beam up to \GeV{1}. The injected bunch is simulated starting from a photoinjector, matched to plasma, boosted and finally matched to an undulator, where its ability to produce FEL radiation is verified to yield $O(\num{e11})$ photons per shot at \nm{2.7}., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

In the framework of the Eupraxia Design Study an advanced accelerator facility EUPRAXIA@SPARC_LAB has been proposed to be realized at Frascati (Italy) Laboratories of INFN. Two advanced acceleration schemes will be applied, namely an ultimate high gradient 1 GeV X-band linac together with a plasma acceleration stage to provide accelerating gradients of the GeV/m order. A FEL scheme is foreseen to produce X-ray beams within 3-10 nm range. A 500-TW Laser system is also foreseen for electron and ion production experiments and a Compton backscattering Interaction is planned together with extraction beamlines at intermediate electron beam energy for neutron beams and THz radiation production. On the wake of the results obtained so far at the SPARC\_LAB test-facility at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati (Italy), we are currently investigating the possibility to design and build a new multi-disciplinary user-facility, equipped with a soft X-ray Free Electron Laser (FEL) driven by a $\sim$1 GeV high brightness linac based on plasma accelerator modules. This design study is performed in synergy with the EuPRAXIA design study. In this paper we report about the recent progresses in the on going design study of the new facility.

The conceptual design of a compact source of GeV-class muons is presented, based on a plasma based electron-gamma collider. Evaluations of muon flux, spectra and brilliance are presented, carried out with ad-hoc montecarlo simulations of the electron-gamma collisions. These are analyzed in the context of a large spread of the invariant mass in the e-gamma interaction, due to the typical characteristics of plasma self-injected GeV electron beams, carrying large bunch charges with huge energy spread. The availability of a compact point-like muon source, triggerable at nsec level, may open a completely new scenario in the muon radiography application field.

We revisit the description of inverse Compton scattering sources and the photon beams generated therein, emphasizing the behavior of their phase space density distributions and how they depend upon those of the two colliding beams of electrons and photons. Main objective is to provide practical formulas for bandwidth, spectral density, brilliance, which are valid in general for any value of the recoil factor, i.e. both in the Thomson regime of negligible electron recoil, and in the deep Compton recoil dominated region, which is of interest for gamma-gamma colliders and Compton Sources for the production of multi-GeV photon beams. We adopt a description based on the center of mass reference system of the electron-photon collision, in order to underline the role of the electron recoil and how it controls the relativistic Doppler/boost effect in various regimes. Comparisons with Monte Carlo simulations of inverse Compton scattering in various scenarios are presented, showing very good agreement with the analytical formulas: in particular we find that the bandwidth dependence on the electron beam emittance, of paramount importance in Thomson regime, as it limits the amount of focusing imparted to the electron beam, becomes much less sensitive in deep Compton regime, allowing a stronger focusing of the electron beam to enhance luminosity without loss of mono-chromaticity. A similar effect occurs concerning the bandwidth dependence on the frequency spread of the incident photons: in deep recoil regime the bandwidth comes out to be much less dependent on the frequency spread., Comment: 15 pages, 17 figures

Present availability of high brilliance photon beams as those produced by X-ray Free Electron Lasers in combination with intense TeV proton beams typical of the Large Hadron Collider makes it possible to conceive the generation of pion beams via photo-production in a highly relativistic Lorentz boosted frame: the main advantage is the low emittance attainable and a TeV-class energy for the generated pions, that may be an interesting option for the production of low emittance muon and neutrino beams. We will describe the kinematics of the two classes of dominant events, i.e. the pion photo-production and the electron/positron pair production, neglecting other small cross-section possible events like Compton and muon pair production. Based on the phase space distributions of the pion and muon beams we will analyze the pion beam brightness achievable in three examples, based on advanced high efficiency high repetition rate FELs coupled to LHC or Future Circular Collider (FCC) proton beams, together with the study of a possible small scale demonstrator based on a Compton Source coupled to a Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) proton beam., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

The machine described in this document is an advanced Source of up to 20 MeV Gamma Rays based on Compton back-scattering, i.e. collision of an intense high power laser beam and a high brightness electron beam with maximum kinetic energy of about 720 MeV. Fully equipped with collimation and characterization systems, in order to generate, form and fully measure the physical characteristics of the produced Gamma Ray beam. The quality, i.e. phase space density, of the two colliding beams will be such that the emitted Gamma ray beam is characterized by energy tunability, spectral density, bandwidth, polarization, divergence and brilliance compatible with the requested performances of the ELI-NP user facility, to be built in Romania as the Nuclear Physics oriented Pillar of the European Extreme Light Infrastructure. This document illustrates the Technical Design finally produced by the EuroGammaS Collaboration, after a thorough investigation of the machine expected performances within the constraints imposed by the ELI-NP tender for the Gamma Beam System (ELI-NP-GBS), in terms of available budget, deadlines for machine completion and performance achievement, compatibility with lay-out and characteristics of the planned civil engineering.

This report describes the scientific aims and potentials as well as the preliminary technical design of IRIDE, an innovative tool for multi-disciplinary investigations in a wide field of scientific, technological and industrial applications. IRIDE will be a high intensity 'particle factory', based on a combination of a high duty cycle radio-frequency superconducting electron linac and of high energy lasers. Conceived to provide unique research possibilities for particle physics, for condensed matter physics, chemistry and material science, for structural biology and industrial applications, IRIDE will open completely new research possibilities and advance our knowledge in many branches of science and technology. IRIDE will contribute to open new avenues of discoveries and to address most important riddles: What does matter consist of? What is the structure of proteins that have a fundamental role in life processes? What can we learn from protein structure to improve the treatment of diseases and to design more efficient drugs? But also how does an electronic chip behave under the effect of radiations? How can the heat flow in a large heat exchanger be optimized? The scientific potential of IRIDE is far reaching and justifies the construction of such a large facility in Italy in synergy with the national research institutes and companies and in the framework of the European and international research. It will impact also on R&D work for ILC, FEL, and will be complementarity to other large scale accelerator projects. Laser-based electron acceleration is attracting strong interest from the conventional accelerator community due to its outstanding characteristics in terms of high initial energy, low emittance and high beam current. Unfortunately, such beams are currently not comparable to those of conventional accelerators, limiting their use for the manifold applications that a traditional accelerator can have. Besides working on the plasma source itself, a promising approach to shape the laser-generated beams is coupling them with conventional accelerator elements in order to benefit from both, a versatile electron source and a controllable beam. In this paper we show that some parameters commonly used by the particle accelerator community must be reconsidered when dealing with laser-plasma beams. Starting from the parameters of laser-generated electrons which can be obtained nowadays by conventional multi hundred TW laser systems, we compare different conventional magnetic lattices able to capture and transport those GeV electrons. From this comparison we highlight some important limit of the state-of-the-art plasma generated electrons with respect to conventional accelerator ones. Eventually we discuss an application of such beams in undulators for Free Electron Lasers (FELs), which is one of the most demanding applications in terms of beam quality., Comment: 10 pages, 15 figures

The advance in laser plasma acceleration techniques pushes the regime of the resulting accelerated particles to higher energies and intensities. In particular the upcoming experiments with the FLAME laser at LNF will enter the GeV regime with almost 1pC of electrons. From the current status of understanding of the acceleration mechanism, relatively large angular and energy spreads are expected. There is therefore the need to develop a device capable to measure the energy of electrons over three orders of magnitude (few MeV to few GeV) under still unknown angular divergences. Within the PlasmonX experiment at LNF a spectrometer is being constructed to perform these measurements. It is made of an electro-magnet and a screen made of scintillating fibers for the measurement of the trajectories of the particles. The large range of operation, the huge number of particles and the need to focus the divergence present unprecedented challenges in the design and construction of such a device. A recent breakthrough in laser-plasma accelerators, based upon ultrashort high-intensity lasers, demonstrated the generation of quasi-monoenergetic GeV-electrons. With future Petawatt lasers ultra-high beam currents of ~100 kA in ~10 fs can be expected, allowing for drastic reduction in the undulator length of free-electron-lasers (FELs). We present a discussion of the key aspects of a table-top FEL design, including energy loss and chirps induced by space-charge and wakefields. These effects become important for an optimized table-top FEL operation. A first proof-of-principle VUV case is considered as well as a table-top X-ray-FEL which may open a brilliant light source also for new ways in clinical diagnostics., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures; accepted for publication in Appl. The design of the Linac Coherent Light Source assumes that a low-emittance, 1-nC, 10-ps beam will be available for injection into the 15-GeV linac. The proposed rf photocathode injector that will provide a 150-MeV beam with rms normalized emittances of 1 mm in both the transverse and longitudinal dimensions is based on a 1.6-cell S-band rf gun that is equipped with an emittance compensating solenoid. The booster accelerator is positioned at the beam waist coinciding with the first emittance maximum and is provided with an accelerating gradient of ~25 MeV/m, i.e., the "new working point." The uv pulses required for cathode excitation will be generated by tripling the output of a Ti:sapphire laser system consisting of a highly stable cw mode-locked oscillator and two bow-tie amplifiers pumped by a pair of Q-switched Nd:YAG lasers. The large bandwidth of the Ti:sapphire system accommodates the desired temporal pulse shaping. It is becoming increasingly clear that, if a useful device for quantum computation will ever be built, it will be embodied by a classical computing machine with control over a truly quantum subsystem, this apparatus performing a mixture of classical and quantum computation. This paper investigates a possible approach to the problem of programming such machines: a template high level quantum language is presented which complements a generic general purpose classical language with a set of quantum primitives. The underlying scheme involves a run-time environment which calculates the byte-code for the quantum operations and pipes it to a quantum device controller or to a simulator. This language can compactly express existing quantum algorithms and reduce them to sequences of elementary operations; it also easily lends itself to automatic, hardware independent, circuit simplification. A program to design a high brilliance electron source suitable for a short wavelength Linac-based FEL is presented. The goal of the project is to develop a multi-cell integrated photoinjector capable of delivering 1 nC bunches with emittance below 1 mm mrad. This will be the first step toward a possible development of a IV generation light source test facility based on the existing Trieste Linac. For this purpose a common program between Sincrotrone Trieste and INFN-Milano has been undertaken. We report the results of a recent beam dynamics study, motivated by the need to redesign the LCLS photoinjector, that lead to the discovery of a new effective working point for a split RF photoinjector. We consider the emittance compensation regime of a space charge beam: by increasing the solenoid strength, the emittance evolution shows a double minimum behavior in the drifting region. If the booster is located where the relative emittance maximum and the envelope waist occur, the second emittance minimum can be shifted to the booster exit and frozen at a very low level (0.3 mm-mrad for a 1 nC flat top bunch), to the extent that the invariant envelope matching conditions are satisfied. Standing Wave Structures or alternatively Traveling Wave Structures embedded in a Long Solenoid are both candidates as booster linac. A careful measurement of the emittance evolution as a function of position in the drifting region is necessary to verify the computation and to determine experimentally the proper position of the booster cavities. We present the anticipated performances of a multi-cell RF injector operated either with a thermoionic cathode or with a gated photo-cathode. By means of a magnetic compression and a Coherent Spontaneous Emission seeded FEL radiating at 100 to 200 mm, the system produces a beam fully bunched with a 200 A peak current at 2 mm.mrad rms emittance. Free Electron Lasers driven by Super-Conducting Linacs require the generation, acceleration and transport of trains of bunches with high charge, high repetition rate and low emittance. A numerical model already developed for the modeling of beam dynamics in SC Linacs has been now extended to treat RF guns with proper description of the photocathode bunch generation. The model algorithm is based on a coupled integration of Newton and Maxwell equations under a slowly varying envelope approximation for the time evolution of mode amplitudes in the accelerating structure and an envelope equation description for a set of bunch slices. In this way beam loading effects and higher order modes excitation can be studied. The application to the TTF-FEL injector as a particular design is presented and the optimization according to the invariant envelope concept is discussed, in the frame of single bunch calculations compared to the results of other multi-particle codes., Comment: Presented at VI European Particle Accelerator Conference, Stockholm, Sweden (June 22-26, 1998)
