We reassess the relationship between robotization and the growth in labor productivity with more recent data. We discover that the effect of robot density in the growth productivity substantially decreased in the post‐2008 period. In this period, the lower positive effect of robot density in the growth of labor productivity is less dependent on the increase in value added. The data analysis dismisses any positive effect of robotization on hours worked. Results are confirmed by several robustness checks, cross‐sectional (and panel‐data) Instrumental Variable and quantile regression analysis. By means of the quantile regression analysis, we learn that the effect of robots on labor productivity is stronger for low productivity sectors and that in the most recent period, the effect of robotization felt significantly throughout the distribution. This highlights one of the possible sources of stagnation in the era of robotization and have implication both for labor market and R&D policies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The increasing sustainability and the causes of economic growth in African countries, provide a set of new research questions for development scholars around the World. The possible determinants of this phenomenon are usually considered to be of economic, social, and institutional natures. In this work is assessed which economic, social, and institutional determinants of economic development are important to the development of Africa countries, for the years 1996 and 2014. The similarities amongst countries and the evolution between the two years are also analyzed. A principal components analysis for categorical data to examine the inter-relationships between the indicators in 1996 and also in 2014. An agglomerative clustering algorithm was used through two different methods: ward's method and complete linkage method (also called furthest neighbor). The Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA) was suited by a k-means algorithm, to obtain an optimal solution and a typology of countries was identified for each year. The main contribution of the work is to make a joint analysis of the three determinants of economic growth and development--economic, social, and institutional, in which the literature is extremely scarce. Results indicate a positive association amongst institutional, economic, and social determinants of development, which means that countries that exhibit a good performance in institutional indicators also have a good performance in economic and social indicators, and vice-versa, although results are not as clear for 2014 as they are for 1996. Additionally, a higher concentration of countries in the two clusters in which these three indicators are better in 2014 (31 countries in 1996 and 49 countries in 2014), seems to indicate a positive evolution for development of African countries from 1996 to 2014. Results show that policy makers should take an integrated view regarding development and economic growth policies and take in consideration both the economic, social, and institutional characteristics of each country. If an economic, social, or institutional policy is designed independently of the other two, this policy will probably fail in reaching its development or economic growth goal, since all these three factors are interconnected. Applying cross-country dynamic panel data estimations, we show that among the different levels of education, the secondary is the most affected, followed by the tertiary. When different single measures of risk are considered one by one, the tertiary education is affected by more types of risk than any other level of education. This contributes to the literature on the educational production function, as it adds a robust determinant of that function and indicates that politicians should endeavour to decrease country-risk to enhance education. We add an erosion effect (supported by empirical evidence) to this model, and fully characterize its convergence properties. The dynamics is described by a fourth-order system of differential equations. We show that the model converges along a one-dimensional stable manifold and that its equilibrium is saddle-path stable, for most plausible values for the parameters. We also argue that one of the implications of considering this 'erosion effect' is the increase in the adherence of the model to data. Country risk has been somewhat neglected in the analysis. Given adequate controls for price and income, we show that country risk is a robust and significant determinant of tourism specialisation of countries: a 1 per cent increase in country risk causes a 0.2 per cent fall in tourism specialisation. Policy-makers should be aware of the negative effect country risk has in tourism, as this is seen as one of the most promising sectors for development. We present an original meta‐probit analysis for the effect of the Bank of Japan monetary policy on economic growth for the period 2001–2020, using 45 studies. We use impulse response functions in VAR type models to assess if the effects on output of unconventional monetary policies are significant (positive or negative) or not. Funnel asymmetry and precision effect tests do not provide a striking evidence of publication bias. Additionally, we do not find a consensus regarding the output growth effects during the quantitative easing years. Besides variables linked with the studies' methodological features, other variables such as industrial production and the price level have a greater effect on the probability of reporting statistically significant (positive) effects of quantitative easing on output growth. However, one of the most important (policy) implications of our study is that the evidence for a significant real effect of unconventional monetary policy is weak. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
