The ac side current of a line commutated converter(LCC) high voltage direct current (HVDC) is characterized by highly non-sinusoidal waveform. If the harmonic current is allowed to flow in the connected ac network, it may cause unacceptable levels of distortion. Therefore, ac side filters are required as part of the total HVDC converter station, in order to reduce the harmonic distortion of the ac side current and voltage to acceptably low levels. The ac filters are also employed to compensate the requested reactive power because LCC HVDC also consume substantial reactive power. Among different types of filters, triple-tuned filters have been widely utilized for HVDC system. This paper presents two design methods of triple-tuned filter; equivalent method and parametric method. Using a parametric method, in particular this paper proposes a design algorithm for a triple tuned filter. Finally, the performance of the design algorithm is evaluated for a 250kV HVDC system in Jeju island. The results cleary demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed design method in harmonics reduction.

An availability and a reliability prediction has been made for a high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) module of VSC (Voltage Source Converter) containing DC/DC converter, gate driver, capacitor and insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBT). This prediction was made using published failure rates for the electronic equipment. The purpose of this prediction is to determinate the additional module redundancy of VSC and the used method is “binomial failure method”.

In HVDC converters that employ a line-commutated control, reactive power is absorbed by the rectifier and inverter terminals during AC/DC conversion. An AC filter usually consists of filters and large shunt capacitors to supply reactive power to the HVDC station. When STATCOM is used to supply reactive power to the HVDC system with AC filter, the low-order harmonics generated from STATCOM can result in a resonance between the shunt capacitor and AC network. Therefore, a control strategy based on selective harmonic elimination is adopted to minimize the low-order harmonics from STATCOM. The cancellation of harmonic instabilities is verified through simulations in PSCAD/EMTDC.

This paper deals with a new concept for calculating DC harmonic voltages and currents of line- commutated HVDC systems. In contrast to the conventional method, this method is useful for BTB (Back-To-Back) HVDC systems without smoothing reactors or PTP (Point-To-Point) with very short transmission line. This method proposes a new direction for HVDC system design and analysis. The proposed method is applied to a 50 Hz/60 Hz BTB test system and a synchronized BTB test system. After simulation and verification, the new results are introduced.

This paper studies modeling of Jeju 80kV HVDC system and its controller by using PSCAD/EMTDC program. Reduced ac network is applied to verify interaction between ac network and dc system. Design parameter is applied to the converter transformer, harmonic filter and dc transmisstion line to simulate dc system. HVDC controller is divided into a rectifier controller and a inverter controller according to the converter operating mode. The inverter controller is composed of current control, voltage control and extingtion angle control. The rectifier controller is composed of current control and voltage control. Both controller has VDCOL characteristics so that current order is dependant on voltage variation. Step response, ac network single phase fault, three phase fault is simulated to verify the dynamic performance of controller model in both transient state and steady state.

The paper deals with the cost evaluation concerning the implementation of a 2000MW HVDC link over a 200km distance. Two different dc voltages have been considered, namely +/−300kVdc and 500kVdc. Two different scheme configurations have been considered, namely a single bipole system and a double bipole system.

Corona discharges form at the surface of a transmission line conductor when the electric-field intensity on the conductor surface exceeds the breakdown strength of air. In order to decrease the electric-field intensity on the conductor surface, a new 6 conductor bundle has been studied. This bundle, asymmetrical-sized conductor bundle, consists of a large subconductor at the bottom two conductor positions in the 6-conductor bundle of each phase of the line. The electric field intensity on these two large subconductors is reduced which in turn reduces the corona noise. It is proven that the newly proposed method is a better solution for decreasing the electric- field intensity than either the conventional bundle or the asymmetric bundle proposed by EPRI(Electric Power Research Institute).

In this work, prior measurements have been carried out of the human exposure to magnetic field near power facilities in Korea according to the measurement procedures of IEC PT62110. These measurements aim for evaluating the exposure levels by use of newly proposed IEC PT62110 of the human body to the magnetic fields on general public. For this purpose, statistical treatment has been conducted with the measured data for the uniform and non-uniform magnetic field exposure.
