Abstract

Synchronization dynamics is a phenomenon of great interest in many fields of science. One of the most important fields is neuron dynamics, as synchronization in certain regions of the brain is related to some of the most common mental illnesses. In this work, we study synchronization in a small-world network of non-identical Chialvo neurons that are electrically coupled. We introduce a mismatch in one of the model parameters to construct non-identical neurons. Our study examines the effects of this parameter mismatch, the noise intensity in the stochastic model, and the coupling strength between neurons on synchronization and firing frequency. We have identified critical values of noise intensity, parameter mismatch, and rewiring probability that facilitate effective synchronization within the network. Furthermore, we observe that the balance between excitatory and inhibitory connections plays a crucial role in achieving global synchronization. Our findings offer insights into the mechanisms driving synchronization dynamics in complex neuron networks.

2. Transient chaos under coordinate transformations in relativistic systems

Abstract

We use the H\'enon-Heiles system as a paradigmatic model for chaotic scattering to study the Lorentz factor effects on its transient chaotic dynamics. In particular, we focus on how time dilation occurs within the scattering region by measuring the time in a clock attached to the particle. We observe that the several events of time dilation that the particle undergoes exhibit sensitivity to initial conditions. However, the structure of the singularities appearing in the escape time function remains invariant under coordinate transformations. This occurs because the singularities are closely related to the chaotic saddle. We then demonstrate using a Cantor-like set approach that the fractal dimension of the escape time function is relativistic invariant. In order to verify this result, we compute by means of the uncertainty dimension algorithm the fractal dimensions of the escape time functions as measured with inertial and comoving with the particle frames. We conclude that, from a mathematical point of view, chaotic transient phenomena are equally predictable in any reference frame and that transient chaos is coordinate invariant.

3. The Role of Noise in the Tumor Dynamics under Chemotherapy Treatment

Abstract

Dynamical systems modeling tumor growth have been investigated to analyze the dynamics between tumor and healthy cells. Recent theoretical studies indicate that these interactions may lead to different dynamical outcomes under the effect of particular cancer therapies. In the present paper, we derive a system of nonlinear differential equations, in order to investigate solid tumors in vivo, taking into account the impact of chemotherapy on both tumor and healthy cells. We start by studying our model only in terms of deterministic dynamics under the variation of a drug concentration parameter. Later, with the introduction of noise, a stochastic model is used to analyze the impact of the unavoidable random fluctuations. As a result, new insights into noise-induced transitions are provided and illustrated in detail using techniques from dynamical systems and from the theory of stochastic processes. © 2021, The Author(s).

4. Tumor stabilization induced by T-cell recruitment fluctuations

Abstract

The influence of random fluctuations on the recruitment of effector cells towards a tumor is studied by means of a stochastic mathematical model. Aggressively growing tumors are confronted against varying intensities of the cell-mediated immune response for which chaotic and periodic oscillations coexist together with stable tumor dynamics. A thorough parametric analysis of the noise-induced transition from this oscillatory regime to complete tumor dominance is carried out. A hysteresis phenomenon is uncovered, which stabilizes the tumor at its carrying capacity and drives the healthy and the immune cell populations to their extinction. Furthermore, it is shown that near a crisis bifurcation, such transitions occur under weak noise intensities. Finally, the corresponding noise-induced chaos-order transformation is analyzed and discussed in detail. © World Scientific Publishing Company

Abstract

Basin boundary metamorphoses are characteristic in some kinds of chaotic dynamical systems. They take place when one parameter of the system is varied and it passes through a certain critical value. In this paper we show that a parametric harmonic perturbation can produce basin boundary metamorphoses in periodically driven chaotic dynamical systems even when its amplitude is smaller than the amplitude of the main driving. The physical context of this work is related with the phenomenon of trajectories escaping from a potential well, which is illustrated by using as prototype model the Helmholtz oscillator. One of the main contributions of our research is to analyze the role of the phase difference between the parametric harmonic perturbation and the main driving in the appearance of a basin boundary metamorphosis. We also analyze the variation of the size of the basins and the fractal dimension of the corresponding boundaries when this phenomenon occurs. Finally, Melnikov analysis of this phenomenon is carried out. We expect that this work can be useful for a better understanding of basin boundary metamorphoses phenomena.

Abstract

Here we study how to control the dynamics of excitable systems by using the phase control technique. Excitable systems are relevant in neuronal dynamics and therefore this method might have important applications. We use the periodically driven FitzHugh-Nagumo (FHN) model, which displays both spiking and non-spiking behaviours in chaotic or periodic regimes. The phase control technique consists of applying a harmonic perturbation with a suitable phase phi that we adjust in search of different behaviours of the FHN dynamics. We compare our numerical results with experimental measurements performed on an electronic circuit and find good agreement between them. This method might be useful for a better understanding of excitable systems and different phenomena in neuronal dynamics.

12. Delay-induced resonance suppresses damping-induced unpredictability.

Abstract

Combined effects of the damping and forcing in the underdamped time-delayed Duffing oscillator are considered in this paper. We analyse the generation of a certain damping-induced unpredictability due to the gradual suppression of interwell oscillations. We find the minimal amount of the forcing amplitude and the right forcing frequency to revert the effect of the dissipation, so that the interwell oscillations can be restored, for different time delay values. This is achieved by using the delay-induced resonance, in which the time delay replaces one of the two periodic forcings present in the vibrational resonance. A discussion in terms of the time delay of the critical values of the forcing for which the delay-induced resonance can tame the dissipation effect is finally carried out. Abstract

Background: Stress and anxiety have frequently been mentioned as possible factors related to the development of oral lichen planus (OLP), although this association remains controversial., Objective: To determine whether anxiety and depression constitute risk factors in the development of OLP., Material and Methods: Eighty patients diagnosed as having OLP were studied: anxiety was evaluated by the Hamilton Anxiety Scale and depression with the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale. The results were contrasted with those obtained in a control series of the same number of subjects (n = 80) matched for age and sex., Results: Significantly greater anxiety and depression were observed among patients with OLP than in the control group. Odds ratios of 2.8 and 4.4 were obtained for anxiety and depression, respectively., Conclusion: Our findings suggest that anxiety and depression constitute risk factors that could influence the development of OLP., (Copyright 2001 S.
