Abstract

Synchronization dynamics is a phenomenon of great interest in many fields of science. One of the most important fields is neuron dynamics, as synchronization in certain regions of the brain is related to some of the most common mental illnesses. In this work, we study synchronization in a small-world network of non-identical Chialvo neurons that are electrically coupled. We introduce a mismatch in one of the model parameters to construct non-identical neurons. Our study examines the effects of this parameter mismatch, the noise intensity in the stochastic model, and the coupling strength between neurons on synchronization and firing frequency. We have identified critical values of noise intensity, parameter mismatch, and rewiring probability that facilitate effective synchronization within the network. Furthermore, we observe that the balance between excitatory and inhibitory connections plays a crucial role in achieving global synchronization. Our findings offer insights into the mechanisms driving synchronization dynamics in complex neuron networks.

2. Striking resilience of an island endemic bird to a severe perturbation: the case of the Gran Canaria blue chaffinch

Abstract

Evidence regarding population trends of endangered species in special protection areas and their recovery ability from catastrophic disturbances is scarce. We assessed the population trend of the Gran Canaria blue chaffinch (Fringilla polatzeki), a habitat specialist endemic to the pine forest of Inagua in the Canary Islands, following a devastating wildfire in July 2007. Using a standardized census program that accounts for detectability, we have monitored the population trend of the species since Inagua was declared a Strict Nature Reserve in 1994. The breeding population density of the blue chaffinch remained stable in Inagua from the beginning of the monitoring program in 1994 until the year before the wildfire. However, in spring 2008, the population density decreased by half with respect to density in the preceding years. Since 2008, the population has gradually increased, reaching its highest recorded density in 2016 (15.8 birds/km2).This represents an average annual increase of 23.7 %, indicating impressive resilience to catastrophic events. The creation of Inagua as a strict nature reserve did not therefore increase the global population or protect the blue chaffinch against a demographic crisis but probably prevented a deepening of the demographic crisis or further declines. Except for the two years immediately after the severe wildfire of 2007, the population density of the blue chaffinch in Inagua has remained relatively stable at around 9–16 birds/km2, the lowest recorded abundance for a small woodland passerine in the Western Palearctic.

3. Bias in density estimations using strip transects in dry open-country environments in the Canary Islands

Abstract

We studied bias in density estimations derived from strip transects in dry open-country in the Canary Islands. We also present some critical remarks on García-del-Rey’s (2005) paper regarding strip transects and the validity of comparisons based on population densities of birds in scrublands on Tenerife island using two different methods: territory mapping and strip transect sampling. Although strip transects with census belts of 25 m do not account for detectability, this method only slightly undervalues true density estimates, and allowed to detect more than 85% of birds present in poorly vegetated environments in the Canary Islands. Previously published works on distribution and abundance of terrestrial birds in the Canary Islands using the strip transect sampling with belts of 25 m on both sides of the observer, thus provide reliable information that only slightly underestimates true densities.

4. Transient chaos under coordinate transformations in relativistic systems

Abstract

We use the H\'enon-Heiles system as a paradigmatic model for chaotic scattering to study the Lorentz factor effects on its transient chaotic dynamics. In particular, we focus on how time dilation occurs within the scattering region by measuring the time in a clock attached to the particle. We observe that the several events of time dilation that the particle undergoes exhibit sensitivity to initial conditions. However, the structure of the singularities appearing in the escape time function remains invariant under coordinate transformations. This occurs because the singularities are closely related to the chaotic saddle. We then demonstrate using a Cantor-like set approach that the fractal dimension of the escape time function is relativistic invariant. In order to verify this result, we compute by means of the uncertainty dimension algorithm the fractal dimensions of the escape time functions as measured with inertial and comoving with the particle frames. We conclude that, from a mathematical point of view, chaotic transient phenomena are equally predictable in any reference frame and that transient chaos is coordinate invariant.

9. Usefulness of somatosensory evoked potentials for monitoring the clinical course of patients with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy.

Abstract

Introduction/Aims: Somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) are described as a supportive tool to diagnose chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP); however, there is a lack of studies determining the effectiveness of SSEPs in monitoring the clinical course of individuals with this condition. The aims of this study are to evaluate the utility of SSEPs in monitoring patients with CIDP and to assess their association with clinical outcomes following immunomodulatory therapy. Methods: This was a single‐center retrospective observational study that included patients who met European Federation of Neurological Societies and Peripheral Nerve Society criteria for CIDP between 2018 and 2023. SSEPs were performed at diagnosis and during follow‐up after the start of immunomodulatory treatment. Fisher's exact test was employed to assess the association between clinical improvement and SSEP improvement. Results: Eighteen patients were included in the study. Ten patients had a typical CIDP pattern and 11 were male. In 17, SSEPs were abnormal prior to the start of immunomodulatory treatment. In patients who showed clinical improvement with immunomodulatory therapy, we observed that 15/17 had partial or complete improvement in SSEPs. Patients who showed no clinical improvement with first‐line treatment exhibited worsening SSEPs. There was a significant association between clinical and SSEPs improvement (p = 0.009). Discussion: We observed a positive association between improvement in SSEPs and clinical improvement in patients with CIDP. Our data suggest that SSEPs may be useful for monitoring the clinical course of patients with CIDP, but additional, larger studies are needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

10. Changes in thermal niche position and breadth of bird assemblages in Spain in relation to increasing temperatures.

Abstract

Aim: Animal communities around the world are responding to climate change by altering their taxonomic composition, mainly through an increase in the colonisation rate of warm‐dwelling species and the local extinction of cold‐dwelling ones. We assessed whether the taxonomic composition of bird assemblages in peninsular Spain has changed in accordance with the recent increase in temperature. We also evaluated the role of species thermal affinities and population dynamics on these changes. Location: Peninsular Spain. Taxon: Birds. Methods: We compared assemblages reported in the last Spanish breeding bird atlases (1998–2002 vs. 2014–2018) in 10 × 10 km squares. We described species' thermal niches by overlaying global species breeding distributions and world temperature metrics (based on mean, minimum, maximum and range), and then aggregated them to obtain a set of community thermal indices for each assemblage (CTIs and CTR for ranges). Long‐term average temperatures and local current temperatures were related to changes in CTIs using spatial GLMMs, which considered habitat change. We identified the species most responsible for variation in assemblages and regressed species' influence on thermal affinities and population dynamics. Results: CTIs increased with temperature and warm‐dwelling species became more prevalent to the detriment of cold‐dwelling ones. However, we found a counteracting effect of temperature and habitat. Cold‐dwelling forest species were among the most influential species, mainly through colonisation, while warm‐dwelling farmland species contributed through local extinctions (both attenuated local increases in CTI). The mean thermal breadth of assemblages (CTR) decreased with temperatures. Main conclusions: The taxonomic composition of bird assemblages shifted in line with the main expectations due to global change (thermophilisation), mainly due to local colonisation of warm‐dwelling species, although it did not show the pattern of thermal homogenisation suggested elsewhere. Our results add further evidence of the interplay between climate warming and land‐use change in the ongoing adjustment of animal communities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA) assays conducted on plasma are rapidly developing a strong evidence base for use in patients with cancer. The European Society for Medical Oncology convened an expert working group to review the analytical and clinical validity and utility of ctDNA assays. For patients with advanced cancer, validated and adequately sensitive ctDNA assays have utility in identifying actionable mutations to direct targeted therapy, and may be used in routine clinical practice, provided the limitations of the assays are taken into account. Tissue-based testing remains the preferred test for many cancer patients, due to limitations of ctDNA assays detecting fusion events and copy number changes, although ctDNA assays may be routinely used when faster results will be clinically important, or when tissue biopsies are not possible or inappropriate. Reflex tumour testing should be considered following a non-informative ctDNA result, due to false-negative results with ctDNA testing. In patients treated for early-stage cancers, detection of molecular residual disease or molecular relapse, has high evidence of clinical validity in anticipating future relapse in many cancers. Molecular residual disease/molecular relapse detection cannot be recommended in routine clinical practice, as currently there is no evidence for clinical utility in directing treatment. Additional potential applications of ctDNA assays, under research development and not recommended for routine practice, include identifying patients not responding to therapy with early dynamic changes in ctDNA levels, monitoring therapy for the development of resistance mutations before clinical progression, and in screening asymptomatic people for cancer. Recommendations for reporting of results, future development of ctDNA assays and future clinical research are made.

Abstract

PubMed: 31209238, The effectiveness of most cancer targeted therapies is short-lived. Tumors often develop resistance that might be overcome with drug combinations. However, the number of possible combinations is vast, necessitating data-driven approaches to find optimal patient-specific treatments. Here we report AstraZeneca’s large drug combination dataset, consisting of 11,576 experiments from 910 combinations across 85 molecularly characterized cancer cell lines, and results of a DREAM Challenge to evaluate computational strategies for predicting synergistic drug pairs and biomarkers. 160 teams participated to provide a comprehensive methodological development and benchmarking. Winning methods incorporate prior knowledge of drug-target interactions. Synergy is predicted with an accuracy matching biological replicates for >60% of combinations. However, 20% of drug combinations are poorly predicted by all methods. 40. Relationship between oceanographic variables and extreme albacore yield (Thunnus alalunga) of Spanish troll fishery in Northeast Atlantic

Abstract

Using cloud-free Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for the Earth Observing System (AMSR-E) sea surface temperature (SST) and daily set longline fishery data, we studied the relationship between albacore (ALB) fishing grounds and thermal conditions in the southern Indian Ocean. SST and Jensen–Shannon divergence (JSD) maps with a daily spatiotemporal resolution were related to sites with high catches per unit effort (CPUE) (>11 fish/103 hooks). A high JSD is considered to be an index of a SST front. In winter, high CPUE occurred in the vicinity of the North Subtropical Front (Belkin and Gordon, 1996), where SST was 15–19 °C and JSD was 0.3–0.9. Histograms of the high CPUE plotted against SST and JSD indicated that 95% of the high CPUEs were in the 16–18.5 °C SST range and 97% were in the 0.4–0.9 JSD range. These ranges of SST and JSD are optimum ranges. These cloud-free SST/JSD analyses clearly demonstrate the seasonal north–south movement of the optimum SST and JSD band, which corresponds to the North Subtropical Front in the southern Indian Ocean. Abstract

The effectiveness of most cancer targeted therapies is short-lived. Tumors often develop resistance that might be overcome with drug combinations. However, the number of possible combinations is vast, necessitating data-driven approaches to find optimal patient-specific treatments. Here we report AstraZeneca’s large drug combination dataset, consisting of 11,576 experiments from 910 combinations across 85 molecularly characterized cancer cell lines, and results of a DREAM Challenge to evaluate computational strategies for predicting synergistic drug pairs and biomarkers. 160 teams participated to provide a comprehensive methodological development and benchmarking. Winning methods incorporate prior knowledge of drug-target interactions. Synergy is predicted with an accuracy matching biological replicates for >60% of combinations. However, 20% of drug combinations are poorly predicted by all methods. Abstract

Dynamical systems modeling tumor growth have been investigated to analyze the dynamics between tumor and healthy cells. Recent theoretical studies indicate that these interactions may lead to different dynamical outcomes under the effect of particular cancer therapies. In the present paper, we derive a system of nonlinear differential equations, in order to investigate solid tumors in vivo, taking into account the impact of chemotherapy on both tumor and healthy cells. We start by studying our model only in terms of deterministic dynamics under the variation of a drug concentration parameter. Later, with the introduction of noise, a stochastic model is used to analyze the impact of the unavoidable random fluctuations. As a result, new insights into noise-induced transitions are provided and illustrated in detail using techniques from dynamical systems and from the theory of stochastic processes. © 2021, The Author(s).
