Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (ADRDs) are broad-impact multifactorial neurodegenerative diseases. Their complexity presents unique challenges for developing effective therapies. This review highlights research presented at the 2024 Society for Neuroscience meeting which emphasized the gut microbiome's role in AD pathogenesis by influencing brain function and neurodegeneration through the microbiota–gut–brain axis. This emerging evidence underscores the potential for targeting the gut microbiota to treat AD/ADRD.

The hippocampus primarily functions through a canonical trisynaptic circuit, comprised of dentate granule cells and CA1-CA3 pyramidal neurons (PNs), which exhibit significant heterogeneity along the dorsoventral axis. Among these, CA PNs are known to project beyond the hippocampus into various limbic areas, critically influencing cognitive and affective behaviors. Despite accumulating evidence of these extrahippocampal projections, the specific topological patterns—particularly variations among CA PN types and between their dorsal and ventral subpopulations within each type—remain to be fully elucidated. In this study, we utilized cell type-specific Cre mice injected with fluorescent protein-expressing AAVs to label each CA PN type distinctly. This method further enabled the dual-fluorescence labeling of dorsal and ventral subpopulations using EGFP and tdTomato, respectively, allowing a comprehensive comparison of their axonal projections in an animal. Our findings demonstrate that CA1 PNs predominantly form unilateral projections to the frontal cortex (PFC), amygdala (Amy), nucleus accumbens (NAc), and lateral septum (LS), unlike CA2 and CA3 PNs making bilateral innervation to the LS only. Moreover, the innervation patterns especially within LS subfields differ according to the CA PN type and their location along the dorsoventral axis of the hippocampus. This detailed topographical mapping provides the neuroanatomical basis of the underlying functional distinctions among CA PN types.

Background and Aims: Telehealth has emerged as an important mode of cirrhosis care delivery, but its use and satisfaction among vulnerable populations (eg, racial/ethnic minorities, socioeconomically disadvantaged, substance use disorders) are unknown. We evaluated digital capacity, telehealth use, satisfaction and associated factors among patients receiving hepatology care via telehealth (telehepatology) across 2 Veterans Affairs and 1 safety-net Healthcare systems. Methods: English- and Spanish-speaking adults with cirrhosis (N = 256) completed surveys on telehealth use and satisfaction, quality of life, pandemic stress, alcohol use and depression. Logistic regression analyses assessed telehealth use and general linear models evaluated telehealth satisfaction. Results: The mean age was 64.5 years, 80.9% were male and 35.9% Latino; 44.5% had alcohol-associated cirrhosis; 20.8% had decompensated cirrhosis; 100% had digital (phone/computer) capacity; and 75.0% used telehepatology in the prior 6 months. On multivariable analysis, participants with alcohol-associated (vs not) cirrhosis were less likely and those with greater pandemic stress were more likely to use telehepatology (odds ratio = 0.46 and 1.41, respectively; P < .05). Better quality of life was associated with higher telehepatology satisfaction and older age was associated with lower satisfaction (β = 0.01 and −0.01, respectively; P < .05). Latinos had higher satisfaction, but alcohol use disorder was associated with less satisfaction with telehepatology visits (β = 0.22 and −0.02, respectively; P

Retinoic acid (RA), derived from vitamin A (retinol), plays a crucial role in modulating neuroplasticity within the adult brain. Perturbations in RA signaling have been associated with memory impairments, underscoring the necessity to elucidate RA’s influence on neuronal activity, particularly within the hippocampus. In this study, we investigated the cell type and sub-regional distribution of RA-responsive granule cells (GCs) in the mouse hippocampus and delineated their properties. We discovered that RA-responsive GCs tend to exhibit a muted response to environmental novelty, typically remaining inactive. Interestingly, chronic dietary depletion of RA leads to an abnormal increase in GC activation evoked by a novel environment, an effect that is replicated by the localized application of an RA receptor beta (RARβ) antagonist. Furthermore, our study shows that prolonged RA deficiency impairs spatial discrimination—a cognitive function reliant on the hippocampus—with such impairments being reversible with RA replenishment. In summary, our findings significantly contribute to a better understanding of RA’s role in regulating adult hippocampal neuroplasticity and cognitive functions.

Summary: Fear overgeneralization is a maladaptive response to traumatic stress that is associated with the inability to discriminate between threat and safety contexts, a hallmark feature of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, the neural mechanisms underlying this deficit remain unclear. Here, we show that traumatic stress exposure impairs contextual discrimination between threat and safety contexts in the learned helplessness (LH) model. Mossy cells (MCs) in the dorsal hippocampus are suppressed in response to traumatic stress. Bidirectional manipulation of MC activity in the LH model reveals that MC inhibition is causally linked to impaired contextual discrimination. Mechanistically, MC inhibition increases the number of active granule cells in a given context, significantly overlapping context-specific ensembles. Our study demonstrates that maladaptive inhibition of MCs after traumatic stress is a substantial mechanism underlying fear overgeneralization with contextual discrimination deficit, suggesting a potential therapeutic target for cognitive symptoms of PTSD.

Summary: Identifying individual functional B cell receptors (BCRs) is common, but two-dimensional analysis of B cell frequency versus BCR potency would delineate both quantity and quality of antigen-specific memory B cells. We efficiently determine quantitative BCR neutralizing activities using a single-cell-derived antibody supernatant analysis (SCAN) workflow and develop a frequency-potency algorithm to estimate B cell frequencies at various neutralizing activity or binding affinity cutoffs. In an HIV-1 fusion peptide (FP) immunization study, frequency-potency curves elucidate the quantity and quality of FP-specific immunoglobulin G (IgG)+ memory B cells for different animals, time points, and antibody lineages at single-cell resolution. The BCR neutralizing activities are mainly determined by their affinities to soluble envelope trimer. Frequency analysis definitively demonstrates dominant neutralizing antibody lineages. These findings establish SCAN and frequency-potency analyses as promising approaches for general B cell analysis and monoclonal antibody (mAb) discovery. They also provide specific rationales for HIV-1 FP-directed vaccine optimization.

Large amounts of cement and natural aggregates are used annually to produce concrete, and the high energy consumption required for the production of these materials is considered to be a major environmental concern globally. This study investigates the effect of marine wastes, such as cockle shells and waste fishing nets, on the microstructural characteristics of cement-based materials. Crushed cockle shells were used as a substitute for fine aggregates, and ground waste fishing nets were utilized as a fiber replacement to enhance the flexural performance of cementitious materials. Varying amounts of cockle shell and waste fishing net were washed and then used as substitutes for fine aggregates and fibers, respectively, in cement mortar specimens. 10, 20, and 30 wt% of cockle shells were substituted for fine aggregates, and the waste fishing net of 1.0 % of the total volume was also considered in the mixtures. The compressive and flexural strength of the specimens were measured to examine the effect of marine waste replacement on the mechanical properties of cement-based composites. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and micro-computed tomography were utilized to investigate the microstructural characteristics of the materials with different substitution ratios of cockle shells and waste fishing nets. The obtained results confirm that properly washed and processed cockle shell powder can be used as an alternative to fine aggregates for conventional cement-based composites, and waste fishing nets can be utilized as a reinforcement for improving the flexural performance of cement mortar.

Although cannabidiol and tetrahydrocannabinol in Cannabis species exert their pharmacological effects via the endocannabinoid system, it is believed that other phytochemicals, particularly terpenes, can modulate therapeutic outcomes through the entourage effect. Therefore, to gain a better understanding of the pharmacological effects of Cannabis, obtaining information on phytochemical compositions, including mono-, di-, and sesqui-terpenes in Cannabis species is essential. Applying a sophisticated analytical method is indispensable. In this study, headspace-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (HS-GC/MS) was employed to identify major terpenes in the leaves and inflorescences of hybrid Cannabis species. The incubation time and temperature conditions for HS-GC/MS were optimized. This method was successfully applied to the leaves (n = 9) and inflorescences (n = 7) of hybrid Cannabis species. A total of 26 terpenes in Cannabis species were detected, and six major components, such as α-pinene (9.8–2270 μg/g), β-pinene (2.6–930 μg/g), myrcene (0.7–17,400 μg/g), limonene (1.3–300 μg/g), β-caryophyllene (60–3300 μg/g), and α-humulene (40–870 μg/g), were quantified. Each sample showed different terpene compositions, but six major terpenes among all the terpenes detected were consistently found in both the leaves and inflorescences of hybrid Cannabis species. In this study, the six major terpenes’ potential in hybrid Cannabis species was evaluated as biomarkers to distinguish hybrid Cannabis species samples. This study contributes to a better understanding of the entourage effect of Cannabis-based botanical drugs.

Background Standard antidepressant treatments often take weeks to reach efficacy and are ineffective for many patients. (R,S)-ketamine, an N -methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, has been shown to be a rapid-acting antidepressant and to decrease depressive symptoms within hours of administration. While previous studies have shown the importance of the GluN2B subunit of the NMDA receptor on interneurons in the medial prefrontal cortex, no study to our knowledge has investigated the influence of GluN2B-expressing adult-born granule cells. Methods Here, we examined whether (R,S)-ketamine's efficacy depends on adult-born hippocampal neurons using a genetic strategy to selectively ablate the GluN2B subunit of the NMDA receptor from Nestin+ cells in male and female mice, tested across an array of standard behavioral assays. Results We report that in male mice, GluN2B expression on 6-week-old adult-born neurons is necessary for (R,S)-ketamine's effects on behavioral despair in the forced swim test and on hyponeophagia in the novelty suppressed feeding paradigm, as well on fear behavior following contextual fear conditioning. In female mice, GluN2B expression is necessary for effects on hyponeophagia in novelty suppressed feeding. These effects were not replicated when ablating GluN2B from 2-week-old adult-born neurons. We also find that ablating neurogenesis increases fear expression in contextual fear conditioning, which is buffered by (R,S)-ketamine administration. Conclusions In line with previous studies, these results suggest that 6-week-old adult-born hippocampal neurons expressing GluN2B partially modulate (R,S)-ketamine's rapid-acting effects. Future work targeting these 6-week-old adult-born neurons may prove beneficial for increasing the efficacy of (R , S)-ketamine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research aimed to investigate the effects of input power and gas flow rate on the composition, microstructure, and mechanical properties of TiZrHfNiCuCo metallic coatings. These metallic coatings were deposited on a p-type Si wafer using a direct current magnetron sputtering system with varying input powers (100–300 W) and Ar flow rates (5–20 sccm). It was observed that increasing input power and decreasing Ar flow rate led to TiZrHfNiCuCo metallic coatings with higher hardness and smoother surfaces. The experiment resulted in the formation of a metallic amorphous coating. This study describes the mechanism by which the mechanical properties of the TiZrHfNiCuCo coating change according to sputtering parameters. Based on these results, the effects of sputter variables, such as input power and gas flow rate properties, on the properties of coatings are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives De-identifying protected health information (PHI) in medical documents is important, and a prerequisite to de-identification is the identification of PHI entity names in clinical documents. This study aimed to compare the performance of three pre-training models that have recently attracted significant attention and to determine which model is more suitable for PHI recognition. Methods We compared the PHI recognition performance of deep learning models using the i2b2 2014 dataset. We used the three pre-training models—namely, bidirectional encoder representations from transformers (BERT), robustly optimized BERT pre-training approach (RoBERTa), and XLNet (model built based on Transformer-XL)—to detect PHI. After the dataset was tokenized, it was processed using an inside-outside-beginning tagging scheme and WordPiece-tokenized to place it into these models. Further, the PHI recognition performance was investigated using BERT, RoBERTa, and XLNet. Results Comparing the PHI recognition performance of the three models, it was confirmed that XLNet had a superior F1-score of 96.29%. In addition, when checking PHI entity performance evaluation, RoBERTa and XLNet showed a 30% improvement in performance compared to BERT. Conclusions Among the pre-training models used in this study, XLNet exhibited superior performance because word embedding was well constructed using the two-stream self-attention method. In addition, compared to BERT, RoBERTa and XLNet showed superior performance, indicating that they were more effective in grasping the context.

A triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) is a functional cellular structure that is designed by defining the signed distance field (SDF) for periodically repeated unit cells. This study proposes a novel design methodology to functionally grade the morphology of a TPMS channel for enhancement of the fluid flow performance. Mathematical filtering was performed to change the SDF distribution through various combinations of multiple sigmoid functions, thus locally changing the TPMS geometry. The proposed local filtering was then implemented in the design of a TPMS flow channel to reduce the flow resistance in the inlet and outlet regions. Pressure drop tests were conducted using additively manufactured TPMS channels, and the results showed that the pressure drop decreased by 20% for the filtered design with a volume change of only 2.6%. Numerical simulations were performed to analyze the cause of reduced flow resistance in the locally filtered regions, and the results were verified through flow visualization experiments. Considering that a TPMS structure has a complex geometry and thus its manual modification is very difficult, the proposed filtering method offers an efficient approach for functionally changing the morphology of the TPMS structure.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to comprehensively review Korean domestic stud-ies and investigate the research trends of pharmacopuncture therapy on cervical pain caused by traffic accidents. Methods: Domestic studies between February 1999 and May 2020 from four Korean databases were searched with combinations of keywords ‘cervical pain’, ‘traffic accident’, ‘whiplash injury’, and ‘pharmacopuncture’.Results: 17 studies were selected for review, including 7 randomized controlled trials, 5 retrospective observational studies, 3 case reports, and 2 non-randomized controlled trials. Each study was reviewed by published year, study type, types of pharmacopuncture solu-tions, selected acupuncture points, dosage of pharmacopuncture solutions, frequency of treatment, concurrent treatments, outcome measurements, and the effectiveness of phar-macopuncture therapy. The results are as follows: (1) It showed that the total number of published studies had increased slightly in the last 10 years compared to the previous de-cade. (2) The pharmacopuncture solutions used in the studies were in the following order: Bee-Venom (蜂毒), Jungsongouhyul (中性瘀血), Hwangryunhaedoktang (黃連解毒湯) and Soyeom (消炎). Frequently used acupuncture points were GB20, GV21, A-shi point, GV16, EX-B2, and SI15 in order. (3) The most commonly used total injection dosage was 1.0 cc at a time, and the frequency of treatment was twice a week. (4) Concurrent treatments such as acupuncture, herbal medication, physical therapy and Chuna manual therapy were per-formed in all 17 studies. (5) Pharmacopuncture therapy showed positive effects on cervical pain caused by traffic accidents in all 17 studies reviewed.Conclusion: Pharmacopuncture therapy was effective in cervical pain caused by traffic ac-cidents in all 17 studies selected. Further studies will be needed using more larger scales and more objective data to confirm the effectiveness of pharmacopuncture therapy and to generalize its application.

Four-dimensional (4D) printing is an advanced application of additive manufacturing which enables additional shape transformations over time in response to external stimuli. For appropriate shape transformation, dedicated materials such as shape memory polymers or 3D printers supporting multi-material printing have been used. Recently, a facile 4D printing method was developed which used a fused filament fabrication type 3D printer and a plain thermoplastic filament. This method used the anisotropic thermal deformation of the FFF-printed part to intentionally impose anisotropy by programming orthogonal printing paths, which resulted in thermoresponsive shape transformation upon a thermal stimulation. While the previous studies used convective heating as the thermal stimulus and thus required a long heating time of more than 10 min, this study uses an infrared (IR) heating to enable rapid thermoresponsive shape transformation. An infrared heating system was developed which included an optical focusing unit, a masking unit and a movable heating stage. To investigate the speed of shape transformation, IR heating was performed on a rectangular strip (60 × 6 × 1.6 mm) and the relevant shape transformation time was compared with the previous convective heating result. The shape transformation proceeded rapidly, and after 70 s formed a fully-closed circular shape, corresponding to the 1/10 reduction compared with the convection type heating (more than 13 min). The IR heating was further applied to 2D-to-3D shape transformations of 2D star-shape and flower-shape specimens. For each specimen, a profiled mask was used to selectively irradiate IR on predefined regions and thus to localize the relevant thermoresponsive shape transformation. The global and local IR irradiations were then compared in terms of heating capability and the variability in shape transformations.

Microbial metabolism involves complex, system-level processes implemented via the orchestration of metabolic reactions, gene regulation, and environmental cues. One canonical example of such processes is acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation by Clostridium acetobutylicum, during which cells convert carbon sources to organic acids that are later reassimilated to produce solvents as a strategy for cellular survival. The complexity and systems nature of the process have been largely underappreciated, rendering challenges in understanding and optimizing solvent production. Here, we present a system-level computational framework for ABE fermentation that combines metabolic reactions, gene regulation, and environmental cues. We developed the framework by decomposing the entire system into three modules, building each module separately, and then assembling them back into an integrated system. During the model construction, a bottom-up approach was used to link molecular events at the single-cell level into the events at the population level. The integrated model was able to successfully reproduce ABE fermentations of the WT C. acetobutylicum (ATCC 824), as well as its mutants, using data obtained from our own experiments and from literature. Furthermore, the model confers successful predictions of the fermentations with various network perturbations across metabolic, genetic, and environmental aspects. From foundation to applications, the framework advances our understanding of complex clostridial metabolism and physiology and also facilitates the development of systems engineering strategies for the production of advanced biofuels.

A new formulation, nanoprebiotics [e.g., phthalyl pullulan nanoparticles (PPNs)], was demonstrated to enhance the antimicrobial activity of probiotics [e.g., Lactobacillus plantarum (LP)] in vitro through intracellular stimulation better than that by backbone prebiotics, which are commonly used. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether this combination would exert distinct effects as synbiotics in vivo. Synbiotics combinations of LP, pullulan, and PPNs were used as experimental treatments in a dysbiosis-induced murine model, and their restorative effect was assessed using pathogen Escherichia coli K99 challenge. Our results showed that the E. coli infection was suppressed markedly in the experimental group fed with synbiotics containing PPNs. In addition, the decrease in serum endotoxin level after synbiotics treatment suggested the reinforcement of the gut barrier. Comparison of treatment groups, including a normal control group, showed that synbiotics containing PPNs increased microbial diversity, which is a representative parameter of healthy status. Furthermore, distinct from probiotics treatment alone, synbiotics showed additive effects of enrichment of several well-known beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, and other butyrate-producing bacteria including Faecalibacterium. Collectively, our results indicate that synbiotics containing PPNs are effective at restoring gut dysbiosis, suppressing pathogenic infection, and increasing microbial diversity, suggesting that synbiotics with nanoprebiotics have the potential to be a novel strategy for ameliorating gut dysbiosis and infectious diseases.

A variety of genetic techniques have been devised to determine cell lineage relationships during tissue development. Some of these systems monitor cell lineages spatially and/or temporally without regard to gene expression by the cells, whereas others correlate gene expression with the lineage under study. The GAL4 Technique for Real-time and Clonal Expression (G-TRACE) system allows for rapid, fluorescent protein-based visualization of both current and past GAL4 expression patterns and is therefore amenable to genome-wide expression-based lineage screens. Here we describe the results from such a screen, performed by undergraduate students of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Undergraduate Research Consortium for Functional Genomics (URCFG) and high school summer scholars as part of a discovery-based education program. The results of the screen, which reveal novel expression-based lineage patterns within the brain, the imaginal disc epithelia, and the hematopoietic lymph gland, have been compiled into the G-TRACE Expression Database (GED), an online resource for use by the Drosophila research community. The impact of this discovery-based research experience on student learning gains was assessed independently and shown to be greater than that of similar programs conducted elsewhere. Furthermore, students participating in the URCFG showed considerably higher STEM retention rates than UCLA STEM students that did not participate in the URCFG, as well as STEM students nationwide.

In injection molding, cooling channels are usually manufactured with a straight shape, and thus have low cooling efficiency for a curved mold. Recently, additive manufacturing (AM) was used to fabricate conformal cooling channels that could maintain a consistent distance from the curved surface of the mold. Because this conformal cooling channel was designed to obtain a uniform temperature on the mold surface, it could not efficiently cool locally heated regions (hot spots). This study developed an adaptive conformal cooling method that supports localized-yet-uniform cooling for the heated region by employing micro-cellular cooling structures instead of the typical cooling channels. An injection molding simulation was conducted to predict the locally heated region, and a mold core was designed to include a triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) structure near the heated region. Two biomimetic TPMS structures, Schwarz-diamond and gyroid structures, were designed and fabricated using a digital light processing (DLP)-type polymer AM process. Various design parameters of the TPMS structures, the TPMS shapes and base coordinates, were investigated in terms of the conformal cooling performance. The mold core with the best TPMS design was fabricated using a powder-bed fusion (PBF)-type metal AM process, and injection molding experiments were conducted using the additively manufactured mold core. The developed mold with TPMS cooling achieved a 15 s cooling time to satisfy the dimensional tolerance, which corresponds to a 40% reduction in comparison with that of the conventional cooling (25 s).

Background This was a retrospective review of published articles reporting acupuncture and moxibustion treatment of peroneal nerve palsy. Methods On-line database searches were carried out using; Cochrane Library, Pubmed, CNKI, NDSL and OASIS to find articles reporting acupuncture and moxibustion treatment for peroneal nerve palsy. Duplicate articles and studies that were not relevant to the topic were excluded, along with review articles and commentaries. Results 20 studies were selected, 18 clinical case studies (47 patients) and 2 randomized controlled trials (154 patients). Intervention treatments included acupuncture, moxibustion, bee-venom (BV), pharmacopuncture, electroacupuncture and acupotomy. Surprisingly, although peroneal nerve palsy is not a very rare disease, only 2 studies out of 20 carried out a randomized controlled trial. Conclusions Although studies to date report the efficacy of acupuncture and moxibustion treatment in peroneal nerve palsy patients, the absence of objective evaluation and the absence in the reporting of side-effects remains an issue.

Conventional pervious pavement materials (PPM) that consist of cement and aggregate materials are known for poor durability due to their brittle behavior. Thus, to enhance the durability, we fabricated polymeric PPMs from durable and abundant polyurethane (PU) and undertook mechanical and microscopic characterizations. PU-based PPM samples with varying aggregate sizes were produced and examined to test their compressive strength and water permeability. Furthermore, X-ray micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) was implemented to analyze the samples’ pore and tortuosity characteristics. Through the micro-CT analysis, the morphological characteristics of PPM’s internal structures were identified and quantitively analyzed the correlations between the pore size distribution, connectivity, and tortuosity within the samples. Finally, the microstructures derived from micro-CT were generated as a finite element model and also numerically determined the stress distribution generated inside.

Abstract Background Albuminuria is generally accepted as a sensitive marker of diabetic nephropathy but has limitations in predicting its progression. The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of nonalbumin proteinuria in addition to albuminuria for predicting the progression of type 2 diabetic nephropathy. Methods In this retrospective observational study, the urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) and the nonalbumin protein-to-creatinine ratio (NAPCR) were measured in 325 patients with type 2 diabetes and estimated glomerular filtration rates (eGFR) ≥30 mL/min/1.73 m2. The patients were divided into four groups based on the cutoff points for the urinary ACR (30 mg/g) and NAPCR (120 mg/g). The renal outcomes were chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression and accelerated eGFR decline. Results During the 4.3-year follow-up period, 25 (7.7%) patients showed CKD progression and 69 (21.2%) patients showed accelerated eGFR decline. After adjusting for nine clinical parameters, the group with a NAPCR greater than 120 mg/g exhibited higher cumulative incidences of CKD progression (hazard ratio 6.84; P = 0.001) and accelerated eGFR decline (hazard ratio 1.95; P = 0.011) than the group with a NAPCR

This research demonstrates the development of a transmission-mode localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) sensor chip using a cuvette cell system for the sensitive detection of a biomolecule marker such as C-reactive protein (CRP). In order to develop a highly sensitive LSPR sensor chip, plasmonically active gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were decorated onto various transparent substrates in the form of a uniform, high-density single layer using a self-assembly process. The transparent substrate surface was modified with amine functional groups via (3-Aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) treatment, and the ligand concentration and temperature (0.5% APTES at 60°C) were then optimized to control the binding energy with AuNPs. The optimized plasmonically active strip was subsequently prepared by dipping the amine-functionalized substrate into AuNPs for 8 h. Meat is often wasted due to the perceived concerns of its shelf life and preservation. Specifically, in meat formation, biogenic amines (BAs) are the major agents to spoil them. Herein, we have developed a carbon disulfide (CS2) added colloidal gold nanoparticles-based colorimetric sensor for the rapid and on-site detection of biogenic amines. Transmission electron microscopy is used to observe the morphological changes in colloidal gold nanoparticles and aggregation behavior of CS2 added to the colloidal gold nanoparticles’ solution. Raman spectroscopic analysis is further used to characterize the peaks of CS2, Cad and CS2-Cad molecules. Absorption spectroscopy is used to estimate the colorimetric differences and diffuse reflectance spectra of the samples. The sensing analysis is performed systematically in the presence and absence of CS2. CS2 added colloidal gold nanoparticles colorimetric sensor detected the BAs with a limit of detection (LOD) value of 50.00 µM. Furthermore, the developed sensor has shown an LOD of 50.00 µM for the detection of multiple BAs at a single time. The observed differences in the colorimetric and absorption signals indicate that the structure of BAs is converted to the dithiocarbamate (DTC)-BA molecule, due to the chemical reactions between the amine groups of BAs and CS2. Significantly, the developed colorimetric sensor offers distinct features such as facile fabrication approach, on-site sensing strategy, rapid analysis, visual detection, cost-effective, possibility of mass production, availability to detect multiple BAs at a single time and appreciable sensitivity. The developed sensor can be effectively used as a promising and alternative on-site tool for the estimation of BAs.
