Prior studies attempted to explore the association between schizophrenia and hepatitis C virus (HCV). However, their conclusions were inconsistent. This study aimed to examine the association of schizophrenia with HCV using a population-based dataset in Taiwan. There were 6097 patients with schizophrenia and 6097 sex- and age-matched comparison patients without schizophrenia included in this study. We defined the dependent variable of interest as whether or not a patient had received a diagnosis of HCV. We found that of the sampled patients, 2.1% of patients with schizophrenia and 1.4% of comparison patients had concurrent HCV. We further found that schizophrenia was not significantly associated with concurrent HCV after adjusting for sex, age, urbanization level, geographic region, monthly income, and drug abuse. However, of the sampled male patients, the adjusted odds of concurrent hepatitis C for patients with schizophrenia were 1.72-times higher than the odds of concurrent HCV among comparison patients. We failed to observe this association among female sampled patients. We concluded that schizophrenia was not significantly associated with concurrent HCV. However, of the sampled male patients, the risk of concurrent HCV among patients with schizophrenia was higher than comparison patients.

Summary The association between diabetes and benign prostatic hyperplasia remains inconclusive. In this case–control study, we examined the association of diabetes with benign prostatic enlargement (BPE) using the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2000 in Taiwan. In total, 20 152 patients with BPE as cases and 20 152 age-matched patients without BPE were included as controls. Conditional logistic regression analyses were performed to calculate the odds ratio (OR) and corresponding 95% CI for having been previously diagnosed with diabetes between cases and controls. We found that of the 40 304 sampled patients, 9492 (23.6%) had a history of diabetes before the index date. This mean age for the sampled patients was 65.9 with a standard deviation of 12.0 years. Background Physicians are considered to be the most informed consumers in the use of medical services since they have more information about diseases or medical technology. However, although plenty of researchers have suggested that different medical seeking behavior exists among physicians, very few empirical studies have been conducted to investigate differences in medical utilization between physicians and the general population. Objective We explored differences in the utilization of healthcare services between physicians and the general population using a population-based dataset. Design A cross-sectional study.
