Abstract

People across the world and throughout history have gone to great lengths to enhance their physical appearance. Evolutionary psychologists and ethologists have largely attempted to explain this phenomenon via mating preferences and strategies. Here, we test one of the most popular evolutionary hypotheses for beauty-enhancing behaviors, drawn from mating market and parasite stress perspectives, in a large cross-cultural sample. We also test hypotheses drawn from other influential and non-mutually exclusive theoretical frameworks, from biosocial role theory to a cultural media perspective. Survey data from 93,158 human participants across 93 countries provide evidence that behaviors such as applying makeup or using other cosmetics, hair grooming, clothing style, caring for body hygiene, and exercising or following a specific diet for the specific purpose of improving ones physical attractiveness, are universal. Indeed, 99% of participants reported spending >10 min a day performing beauty-enhancing behaviors. The results largely support evolutionary hypotheses: more time was spent enhancing beauty by women (almost 4 h a day, on average) than by men (3.6 h a day), by the youngest participants (and contrary to predictions, also the oldest), by those with a relatively more severe history of infectious diseases, and by participants currently dating compared to those in established relationships. The strongest predictor of attractiveness-enhancing behaviors was social media usage. Other predictors, in order of effect size, included adhering to traditional gender roles, residing in countries with less gender equality, considering oneself as highly attractive or, conversely, highly unattractive, TV watching time, higher socioeconomic status, right-wing political beliefs, a lower level of education, and personal individualistic attitudes. Abstract

People across the world and throughout history have gone to great lengths to enhance their physical appearance. Evolutionary psychologists and ethologists have largely attempted to explain this phenomenon via mating preferences and strategies. Here, we test one of the most popular evolutionary hypotheses for beauty-enhancing behaviors, drawn from mating market and parasite stress perspectives, in a large cross-cultural sample. We also test hypotheses drawn from other influential and non-mutually exclusive theoretical frameworks, from biosocial role theory to a cultural media perspective. Survey data from 93,158 human participants across 93 countries provide evidence that behaviors such as applying makeup or using other cosmetics, hair grooming, clothing style, caring for body hygiene, and exercising or following a specific diet for the specific purpose of improving ones physical attractiveness, are universal. Indeed, 99% of participants reported spending >10 min a day performing beauty-enhancing behaviors. The results largely support evolutionary hypotheses: more time was spent enhancing beauty by women (almost 4 h a day, on average) than by men (3.6 h a day), by the youngest participants (and contrary to predictions, also the oldest), by those with a relatively more severe history of infectious diseases, and by participants currently dating compared to those in established relationships. The strongest predictor of attractiveness-enhancing behaviors was social media usage. Other predictors, in order of effect size, included adhering to traditional gender roles, residing in countries with less gender equality, considering oneself as highly attractive or, conversely, highly unattractive, TV watching time, higher socioeconomic status, right-wing political beliefs, a lower level of education, and personal individualistic attitudes. 5. Protein kinase A phosphorylation and G protein regulation of type II pneumocyte Na+ channels in lipid bilayers.

Abstract

Protein kinase A (PKA)- and G protein-mediated regulation of immunopurified adult rabbit alveolar epithelial type II (ATII) cell proteins that exhibit amiloride-sensitive Na+ channel activity was studied in planar lipid bilayers and freshly isolated ATII cells. Addition of the catalytic subunit of PKA + ATP increased single channel open probability from 0.42 +/- 0.05 to 0.82 +/- 0.07 in a voltage-independent manner, without affecting unitary conductance. This increase in open probability of the channels was mainly due to a decrease in the time spent by the channel in its closed state. The apparent inhibition constant for amiloride increased from 8.0 +/- 1.8 microM under control conditions to 15 +/- 3 microM after PKA-induced phosphorylation; that for ethylisopropylamiloride increased from 1.0 +/- 0.4 to 2.0 +/- 0.5 microM. Neither pertussis toxin (PTX) nor guanosine 5'-O-(3-thiotriphosphate) affected ATII Na+ channel activity in bilayers. Moreover, PTX failed to affect amiloride-inhibitable 22Na+ uptake in freshly isolated ATII cells. In vitro, ADP ribosylation induced by PTX revealed the presence of a specifically ribosylated band at 40-45 kDa in the total solubilized ATII cell protein fraction, but not in the immunopurified fraction. Moreover, the immunopurified channel was downregulated in response to guanosine 5'-O-(3-thiotriphosphate)-mediated activation of the exogenous G alpha(i-2), but not G(oA), G alpha(i-1), or G alpha(i-3), protein added to the channel. This effect occurred only in the presence of actin. 8. The dual effect of rubidium ions on potassium efflux in depolarized frog skeletal muscle.

Abstract

The effects of external Rb+ on the efflux of 42K+ from whole frog sartorius muscles loaded with 305 mM K+ and 120 mM Cl- were studied. K+ efflux is activated by [Rb+]o less than about 40 mM according to a sigmoid relation similar to that for activation by [K+]o. At [Rb+]o greater than 40 mM, K+ efflux declines, although at [Rb+]o = 300 mM it is still greater than at [Rb+]o = 0 mM. For low concentrations, the increment in K+ efflux over that in K+-and Rb+-free solution, delta K, is described by the relation delta k = a[X+]on, for both K+ and Rb+. The value of a is larger for Rb+ than for K+, while the values of n are similar; the activation produced by a given [Rb+]o is larger than that by an equal [K+]o for concentrations less than about 40 mM. Adding a small amount of Rb+ to a K+-containing solution has effects on K+ efflux which depend on [K+]o. At low [K+]o, adding Rb+ increases K+ efflux, the effect being greatest near [K+]o = 30 mM and declining at higher [K+]o; at [K+]o above 40 mM, addition of Rb+ decreases K+ efflux. At [K+]o above 75 mM, where K+ efflux is largely activated, Rb+ reduces K+ efflux by a factor b, described by the relation b = 1/(1+c[Rb+]o). Activation is discussed in terms of binding to at least two sites in the membrane, and the reduction in K+ efflux by Rb+ at high [K+]o in terms of association with an additional inhibitory site. 9. Unidirectional flux ratio for potassium ions in depolarized frog skeletal muscle

Abstract

Small bundles of frog skeletal muscle fibers were loaded with 305 mM K+ and 120 mM Cl-, and 42K+ tracer efflux and influx were measured as a function of external K+ concentration ([K+]o) at a resting potential of -2 mV. As [K+]o was lowered from 305 mM, efflux decreased along a markedly sigmoidal curve, reaching a constant nonzero value at low [K+]o. Influx varied linearly with [K+]o at low [K+]o and more steeply at higher [K+]o. The ratio of influx to efflux was described by the equation: influx/efflux = exp[-n(V - VK)F/RT] with n = 2 at high [K+]o, but the ratio approached this equation with n = 1 at low [K+]o. Efflux did not depend on [K+]o when the membrane potential was raised to +36 mV, whereas at low [K+]o decreasing the membrane potential to -19 mV further activated the efflux. The results are discussed in terms of an inwardly rectifying potassium channel with two or more activating sites within the membrane that bind K+ and are accessible from the external solution.

Abstract

The characteristics of the individual's time perspective in relation to changes in social, economic, and political conditions are of major conceptual interest. We assessed the time orientations of 1588 Ukrainian students living in two different regions (western and south-eastern Ukraine) with the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (ZTPI) before (2010-2013) and during (2014-2016) the socioeconomic, political, and military crises which started in 2014, eight years before the war in 2022. We applied ANOVAs with the ZTPI dimensions as dependent variables and the period of testing (precrisis, postcrisis) as an independent variable for the two Ukrainian regions separately. The time perspectives of residents in the region most distant from the war zone (western), who positively assessed the change in the political situation around 2014, increased in the future time orientation and decreased in the present-fatalistic , past-positive , and 333 present-hedonistic time orientations. The time perspectives of residents in the regions closest to the war zone (southeastern) decreased in the future and increased in the past-negative and present-fatalistic time orientations, reflecting their negative judgments of the events. It is not the crisis itself, but the specific social, economic, and political factors and evaluations which define the time perspectives, which are flexible and adjust to changes during extreme life circumstances.

Abstract

Background: The effectiveness, tolerability, and safety of intravenous (IV) ketamine in adults with treatment resistant depression (TRD) receiving care in real-word settings is insufficiently characterized. Herein, results from a naturalistic, retrospective study are presented from a Canadian outpatient IV ketamine clinic., Methods: Adults (N = 213; M age  = 45) with Major Depressive Disorder or Bipolar Disorder, with a minimum of Stage 2 antidepressant resistance, received IV ketamine at a community-based multi-disciplinary clinic. The primary outcome measure was change from baseline to post-infusion 4 on the Quick Inventory for Depression Symptomatology-Self Report-16 (QIDS-SR 16 ; n = 190). Secondary measures included QIDS-SR 16 -measured response and remission rates, changes from baseline to endpoint in Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 Scale (GAD-7; n = 188) and the Sheehan Disability Scale (SDS; n = 168)., Results: Significant improvement in total depressive symptoms severity (p < 0.0001) was observed after four infusions of IV ketamine 0.5-0.75 mg/kg. Moreover, the response rate (QIDS-SR 16 total score change ≥ 50%) was 27% and remission (QIDS-SR 16 total score ≤5) rate was 13%. Patients receiving IV ketamine exhibited anxiolytic effects (p < 0.0001,), improved overall psychosocial function (p < 0.0001), and reduced suicidal ideation (p < 0.0001). Compared to the baseline infusion, dissociation severity significantly reduced in subsequent infusions., Limitations: This was a naturalistic, retrospective study, without a control group., Conclusions: IV ketamine was safe, well-tolerated, and effective at improving depressive, anxiety, and functional impairment symptoms in a well-characterized cohort of adults with TRD., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest Roger S. Abstract

Olfaction plays an important role in human social communication, including multiple domains in which people often rely on their sense of smell in the social context. The importance of the sense of smell and its role can however vary inter-individually and culturally. Despite the growing body of literature on differences in olfactory performance or hedonic preferences across the globe, the aspects of a given culture as well as culturally universal individual differences affecting odor awareness in human social life remain unknown. Here, we conducted a large-scale analysis of data collected from 10 794 participants from 52 study sites from 44 countries all over the world. The aim of our research was to explore the potential individual and country-level correlates of odor awareness in the social context. The results show that the individual characteristics were more strongly related than country-level factors to self-reported odor awareness in different social contexts. A model including individual-level predictors (gender, age, material situation, education, and preferred social distance) provided a relatively good fit to the data, but adding country-level predictors (Human Development Index, population density, and average temperature) did not improve model parameters. Although there were some cross-cultural differences in social odor awareness, the main differentiating role was played by the individual differences. This suggests that people living in different cultures and different climate conditions may still share some similar patterns of odor awareness if they share other individual-level characteristics.

Abstract

Amiloride-sensitive Na+ channels play a vital role in many important physiological processes such as delineation of the final urine composition, sensory transduction, and whole-body Na+ homeostasis. These channels display a wide range of biophysical properties, and are regulated by cAMP-mediated second messenger systems. The first of these channels has recently been cloned. This cloned amiloride-sensitive Na+ channel is termined ENaC (Epithelial Na+ Channel) and, in heterologous cellular expression systems, displays a single channel conductance of 4 to 7 pS, a high PNa/PK (> 10), a high amiloride sensitivity (Ki(amil) = 150 nM), and relatively long open and closed times. ENaC may form the core conduction element of many of these functionally diverse forms of Na+ channel. The kinetic and regulatory differences between these channels may be due, in large measure, to unique polypeptides that associate with the core element, forming a functional channel unit.

Abstract

ACTIVE LI EFFLUX FROM HUMAN ERYTHROCYTES WAS SHOWN TO BE MEDIATED BY THE NA/K PUMP: (i) intracellular Li (Li(c)) activated ouabain-sensitive K influx, and (ii) a portion of the Li efflux required external K and was inhibited by ouabain. In activating K influx, Li(c) interacts with the pump like Na rather than like K-depleting the cells of orthophosphate inhibited activation of K influx by intracellular K (K/K exchange) but did not inhibit Li-activated K influx. (To show these interactions of Li(c) with the Na/K pump, p-chloromercuribenzenesulfonate or nystatin was used to allow replacement of intracellular Na and K with Li and choline.) From kinetic studies of the pump, it was shown that the apparent affinity of the intracellular aspect of the Na/K pump for Li was an order of magnitude less than that for Na. From simultaneous measurements of ouabain-sensitive net fluxes of Li and K in Na-free cells, it was shown that the pump-mediated K influx and Li efflux were coupled. The stoichiometry of the coupling ratio was close to 1:1 for Li:K, different from the coupling ratio of 3:2 for Na:K in the pump's normal mode of operation. It had been shown previously that the Na/K pump in human erythrocytes mediates active Li influx. Because it also mediates active Li efflux, the molecular mechanisms for distinguishing between Na and K must be qualitatively different at the internal and external aspects of the pump. The possible relevance of the results of this study to manic depressive illness and Li therapy is discussed.
