Abstract

Meristotheca spinella Núñez-Resendiz, Dreckmann & Sentíes, sp. nov. (Figs 2, 3) HOLOTYPE. — UAMIZ-1332 (Fig. 2A), tetrasporophyte, collected at Bahia Tortuga (19.2135°N, 90.4235°W), Campeche (Mexico), on 06.VI.2015, collected by M. L. Núñez & K. M. Dreckmann. GenBank accession number MK135825. ISOTYPE. — UAMIZ-1331, tetrasporophyte, collected at Bahia Tortuga, Campeche (Mexico), on 06. VI.2015, collected by M. L. Núñez & K. M. Dreckmann. GenBank accession number MK 135823. PARATYPES. — Listed in Table 1. ETYMOLOGY. — The specific epithet spinella refers to the numerous short branches or spine-shaped proliferations that completely cover the margins of the main axes and branches. DIAGNOSIS. — Thalli 20−35 cm high, terete, dark red in color, attached by a discoid holdfast, branching dichotomously, alternately, opposite or laterally, primary axes 1250-1500 µm in diameter; branches 550-750 µm in diameter, covered with small spine-shaped branchlets. Narrow medullary filaments with numerous single-celled rhizoids, 2.5-4 µm in diameter. Inner cortex with five to six layers of cells, 25-45 µm × 20−30 µm in diameter, with small connective filaments. Outer cortex with four to five layers of cells, 10-45 µm long and 4-14 µm in diameter. Tetrasporangia claviform, 20-30 µm long and 4-7 µm in diameter, basally anchored by an elongated supporting cell that can form 3-celled cortical filaments, 7-10 µm long and 4-6 µm in diameter. Cystocarps ellipsoidal, 600-650 µm long and 320-430 µm in width. ECOLOGY. — Populations of Meristotheca spinella Núñez-Resendiz, Dreckmann & Sentíes, sp. nov. were found throughout the year, with greater abundance during the spring (tetrasporophytic state) and summer (vegetative state). They were growing in sandy environments of turbid waters, with little exposure to light, attached to rocky substrata (1-1.5 m deep). They were part of the algal canopy of the submerged algal community together with different species of large red algae, such as Alsidium seaforthii (Turner) J.Agardh, Crassiphycus corneus (J.Agardh) Gurgel, J.N.Norris & Fredericq, C. usneoides (C.Agardh) Gurgel, J.N.Norris & Fredericq, Eucheumatopsis isiformis, Meristotheca cylindrica, and Tepoztequiella rhizoidea, which were as abundant as M. spinella Núñez-Resendiz, Dreckmann & Sentíes, sp. nov. Abstract

The species of the family Halymeniaceae are characterised by their multiaxial thallus and sexual reproduction, involving carpogonial branches and auxiliary cells borne in filamentous ampullae and tetrasporangia decussately or cruciately divided. Most species of the genera Thamnoclonium, Spongophloea, Codiophyllum and Carpopeltis belong to the group of red algae associated with sponges that, so far, have been recorded only in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. In a survey along the Campeche coast of Mexico, however, we found numerous specimens of a stalked red alga associated with a sponge. On the basis of molecular rbcL sequences and morphological features, these specimens proved to be a species of Codiophyllum. Given its independent phylogenetic position within the genus, morphological differences with C. flabelliforme and C. natalense (the other two known species), such as almost cylindrical, non-extended or flabellate axes, the lateral branching pattern, flattened specialised proliferations, and its geographic distribution, we described it as the new species C. mexicanum, the first stalked red alga associated with sponges described and recorded for the western Atlantic. 44. Discrimination of the species of the Crassiphycus corneus/C. usneoidescomplex (Gracilariaceae, Rhodophyta) through geometric morphometric analysis

Abstract

The results of the discrimination by geometric morphometry of the species within the Crassiphycus corneus/C. usneoidescomplex is presented, from the shape of its cortical, subcortical and medullary cells in the apical, medium and basal portions of thallus. Principal component analysis, based on the elliptic Fourier descriptors of cellular outline shapes and NP-MANOVA analysis, show that only the cortical cells in the medium portion were significantly wider inC. corneusthan inC. usneoides. The isoperimetric quotients (Q) indicated that these cells were significantly more circular inC. corneusthan inC. usneoides. We conclude that the outline analyses efficiently recovered phenotypic differences between the species defined by molecular systematics and considered to be cryptic, so far.

Abstract

In the present study we undertook an integrative approach, using both morphological and molecular data (COI-5P + rbcL), to assess the presence of Laurencia pyramidalis in Lusitanian Macaronesia.We studied type material of L. pyramidalis from the herbarium of the Naturalis Biodiversity Center, the Netherlands, and designated a lectotype and syntypes. Vegetative and reproductive features of L. pyramidalis were observed and we included a specimen from the type locality in our molecular analyses.We also investigated the geographical distribution of Laurenciella marilzae, a species recently described from the Canary Islands. Barcode sequences (COI-5P and rbcL) were generated for L. pyramidalis from the type locality (Normandy, France), the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands, and for L. marilzae from its type locality (Tenerife, Canary Islands), the Azores and Brazil.

Abstract

IV Congress of Marine Sciences. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, June 11th to 13th 2014. In the present study, we undertook an integrative approach, using molecular data to assess the diversity of the Laurencia complex in Macaronesian islands (Azores, Madeira and Canary Islands) where speciation events are supposedly common leading to a high endemism. Identification of species of the Laurencia complex based on anatomical and morphological characters is extremely difficult due to phenotypic plasticity and overlaps in many morphological characters. As a consequence, among the 28 species reported so far from these Macaronesian archipelagos, 14 species records have been regarded as doubtful. We used DNA barcode data (mitochondrial COI gene and partial nuclear LSU marker) as a tool for species delimitation. A third marker (rbcL gene) was also studied and phylogenetic analyses were carried out using the three independent markers as well as the combined data set, in the aim to infer the phylogenetic relationships and biogeographic affinities of members of the complex from Macaronesia. Our results proved the usefulness of the DNA barcode markers for uncovering several putative new species of the Laurencia complex in Macaronesia and phylogenetic results revealed the existence of a potential new genus present in Canary Islands, which adds to the six pre-existing genera: Laurencia, Osmundea, Chondrophycus, Palisada, Yuzurua and Laurenciella.

Abstract

10th International Phycological Congress, Orlando, Florida, USA, 4-10 de agosto 2013. The diversity of the Laurencia complex is being assessed in tropical and subtropical Atlantic by an international cooperation project involving Brazil, Mexico, Spain (Canary Islands), Portugal (Azores and Madeira) and USA (Florida) on the base of molecular data allied to a detailed morphological study of species. The diversity of the complex was analyzed for the first time for the Atlantic Ocean, including specimens from all five localities, using the plastid 23S rRNA gene (UPA) which has been investigated as potential DNA Barcode marker for photosynthetic eukaryotes. The mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I gene (COI-5P) was also used as DNA barcode for the same set of species, and the rbcL gene was used for phylogenetic inferences. The range of genetic variation was compared for the three markers. The UPA proved to be more conserved; however, the same genetic groups were resolved with each of the three markers confirming the six genera currently established for the complex: Chondrophycus, Laurencia, Laurenciella, Palisada, Osmundea and Yuzurua.
