- Abstract
Ad hoc networks refer to the wireless networking paradigm that covers a variety of network forms for specific purposes, such as mobile ad hoc networks, sensor n- works, vehicular networks, underwater networks, underground networks, personal area networks, and home networks. The various forms of ad hoc networks promise a broad scope of applications in civilian, commercial, and military areas, which have led to significant new research problems and challenges, and have attracted great efforts from academia, industry, and government. This unique networking paradigm neces- tates re-examination of many established wireless networking concepts and protocols, and calls for developing new fundamental understanding of problems such as interf- ence, mobility, connectivity, capacity, and security, among others. While it is ess- tial to advance theoretical research on fundamentals and practical research on efficient algorithms and protocols, it is also critical to develop useful applications, experim- tal prototypes, and real-world deployments to achieve a practical impact on our so- ety for the success of this networking paradigm. The annual International Conference on Ad Hoc Networks (AdHocNets) is a new event that aims at providing a forum to bring together researchers from academia as well as practitioners from industry and government to meet and exchange ideas and recent research work on all aspects of ad hoc networks. As the first edition of this event, AdHocNets 2009 was successfully held in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, during September 22–25, 2009.

- Abstract
This volume contains the proceedings of the Second International Workshop on Mobile Entity Localization and Tracking in GPS-less Environments (MELT 2009), held in Orlando, Florida on September 30, 2009 in conjunction with the 11th International Conference on Ubiquitous Computing (Ubicomp 2009). MELT provides a forum for the presentation of state-of-the-art technologies in mobile localization and tracking and novel applications of location-based s- vices. MELT 2009 continued the success of the?rst workshop in the series (MELT 2008), which was held is San Francisco, California on September 19, 2008 in conjunction with Mobicom. Location-awareness is a key component for achieving context-awareness. - cent years have witnessed an increasing trend towards location-based services and applications. In most cases, however, location information is limited by the accessibility to GPS, which is unavailable for indoor or underground fac- ities and unreliable in urban environments. Much research has been done, in both the sensor network community and the ubiquitous computing community, to provide techniques for localization and tracking in GPS-less environments. Novel applications based on ad-hoc localization and real-time tracking of - bile entities are growing as a result of these technologies. MELT brings together leaders from both the academic and industrial research communities to discuss challenging and open problems, to evaluate pros and cons of various approaches, to bridge the gap between theory and applications, and to envision new research opportunities.

- Abstract
ThisvolumecontainstheproceedingsoftheInternetofThings(IOT)Conference 2008, the?rst international conference of its kind. The conference took place in Zurich,Switzerland, March26–28,2008. The term ‘Internet of Things'hascome to describe a number of technologies and researchdisciplines that enable the - ternet to reach out into the real world of physical objects. Technologies such as RFID, short-range wireless communications, real-time localization, and sensor networks are becoming increasingly common, bringing the ‘Internet of Things'into industrial, commercial, and domestic use. IOT 2008 brought together le- ing researchersand practitioners, from both academia and industry, to facilitate the sharing of ideas, applications, and research results. IOT 2008 attracted 92 high-quality submissions, from which the technical program committee accepted 23 papers, resulting in a competitive 25% acc- tance rate. In total, there were over 250 individual authors from 23 countries, representing both academic and industrial organizations. Papers were selected solely on the quality of their blind peer reviews. We were fortunate to draw on the combined experience of our 59 program committee members, coming from the most prestigious universities and research labs in Europe, North America, Asia, and Australia. Program committee members were aided by no less than 63 external reviewers in this rigorous process, in which each committee member wrote about 6 reviews. The total of 336 entered reviews resulted in an average of 3. 7 reviews per paper, or slightly more than 1000 words of feedback for each paper submitted.

- Abstract
Technological advancements in recent years have enabled the development of tiny, cheap disposable and self contained battery powered computers, known as sensor nodes or “motes”, which can accept input from an attached sensor, process this input and transmit the results wirelessly to some interested device(s). When a number of these nodes work together, conceivably up to hundreds of thousands, a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is formed. Research in the area of wireless sensor networks has become increasingly wid- pread in recent years, partly due to their wide range of potential uses and also partly due to the fact that the technology enabling such networks is now widely available from many di?erent suppliers, such as: Crossbow, MoteIV, Intel and SUN (java based motes). These wireless sensor networks have the potential to allow a level of integration between computers and the physical world that, to date, has been virtually impos- ble. The uses for such networks is almost limitless and include such diverse app- cations as a counter sniper system for urban warfare [1] tracking the path of a forest re [2], determining the structural stability of a building after an earthquake [3], or tracking people or objects inside a building [4], etc.

- Abstract
This volume serves as the post-conference proceedings for the Second GeoSensor Networks Conference that was held in Boston, Massachusetts in October 2006. The conference addressed issues related to the collection, management, processing, ana- sis, and delivery of real-time geospatial data using distributed geosensor networks. This represents an evolution of the traditional static and centralized geocomputational paradigm, to support the collection of both temporally and spatially high-resolution, up-to-date data over a broad geographic area, and to use sensor networks as actuators in geographic space. Sensors in these environments can be static or mobile, and can be used to passively collect information about the environment or, eventually, to actively influence it. The research challenges behind this novel paradigm extend the frontiers of tra- tional GIS research further into computer science, addressing issues like data stream processing, mobile computing, location-based services, temporal-spatial queries over geosensor networks, adaptable middleware, sensor data integration and mining, au- mated updating of geospatial databases, VR modeling, and computer vision. In order to address these topics, the GSN 2006 conference brought together leading experts in these fields, and provided a three-day forum to present papers and exchange ideas.

- Abstract
The 18th Tyrrhenian Workshop on digital communications is devoted to wi- less communications. In the last decade, wireless communications research boosted launching new standards and proposing new techniques for the - cess technology. We moved from the UTRA standard capable to transmit 0. 5bit/s/Hz to WLAN which is promising 2. 7bit/s/Hz. Now wireless c- munication systems are facing a?ourishing of new proposal moving from multiple antennas at transmitter and receiver side (MIMO systems), to new powerfulForwardErrorCorrectionCodes,toadaptiveradioresourcemana- mentalgorithms. Thenewchallenge, however, isthemovetowardsmultimedia communications and IP technology. This move implies e?orts in several new aspects. First of all an open network, as IP is, imposes the necessity of a - cure network, to guarantee the privacy of the ongoing communications, avoid the use of the networks by unauthorized customers, avoid the misuses and the charge to third parties of the cost of the connection. Also, quality of service (QoS) of the communications is becoming a must in IP networks which are carrying services which need a guaranteed QoS as telephony, real time s- vices, etc. To get this new target some form of access control to the network must be setup. Recently, new form of communication networks has appeared to collect data for several applications (sensor networks, ad hoc networks, etc.) and they need a connection with a backbone network which could be a wireless one with a larger range than the sensor or ad hoc networks.

- Abstract
On behalf of the organizing committee for EuroSSC 2007, we would like to welcome you to the proceedings of the second European Conference on Smart Sensing and Context. Although only in its second year, EuroSSC has already begun to attract significant interest from researchers in the rapidly evolving area of embedded sensing and intelligent objects in support of smart surroundings. Building on the success of the previous conference held in Enschede, The Netherlands, EuroSSC 2007 aimed to reflect two complementary viewpoints: a technology-driven viewpoint which encompasses the diversity of intelligent sensing and associated information processing and a user-driven viewpoint exploring scenarios, applications and interaction methods as they relate to smart surroundings. This year the conference received a total of 51 paper submissions. These represented contributions from 21 countries from Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (69%); Asia (21%); and North America (10%). This obviously reflects the European origins of the conference. However we were particularly pleased by the high number of submissions from Asia reflecting the range and diversity of relevant work in that region. From these the program committee selected 17 papers (33%) for presentation at the conference after a rigorous review process. Every paper received at least three independent reviews, most received four and some five reviews.

- Abstract
This volume contains the proceedings of EWSN 2006, the third in a series of - ropean workshops on wireless sensor networks. The workshop took place at ETH Zurich from February 13 to 15, 2006. Its objective was to present, discuss, and explore the latest technical developments in the?eld of wireless sensor networks, as well as potential future directions. Wireless sensor networks provide a bridge between traditional information systems and the physical world, with collections of wirelessly networked s- sor nodes being deployed in our physical environment to cooperatively monitor real-world phenomena, but also to control aspects of the physical world. In c- trast to traditional computing systems which are mostly decoupled from the real world, wirelesssensornetworksareinherentlyandcloselyintegratedwiththereal world, with data about the physical environment being captured and processed automatically, online, and in real time. This paradigmatic change comes with a number of conceptual and technical challenges involving a wide range of dis- plines in computer science and electrical engineering, but also material sciences, MEMS technology, and power engineering, thus making wireless sensornetworks a multidisciplinary area of research. This workshop series aims at providing a high-level scienti?c forum to implement the cross-disciplinary exchange of ideas andresultsthatisessentialforthistypeofresearcharea. WhilebasedinEurope, the workshop serves as a truly international forum with 40% of the submissions originating from Europe, 38% from Asia and Australia, 20% from the Americas, and2%fromAfrica. Wireless sensor networks has become an active and popular research area, which is witnessed by the 133 submissions we received from authors all over the world.TheProgramCommitteechose21papersforinclusionintheworkshop.

Theseproceedingscontainthepapersofthe3rdEuropeanWorkshoponSecurity and Privacy in Ad Hoc and Sensor Networks (ESAS 2006), which was held in Hamburg, Germany, September 20–21, 2006, in conjunction with the 11th European Symposium on Research in Computer Security (ESORICS 2006). This year, a total of 44 full papers were submitted to ESAS. Each subm- ted paper was reviewed by at least three expert referees. After a short period of discussion and deliberation, the Program Committee selected 14 papers for presentation and subsequent publication in the workshop proceedings. This c- responds to an acceptance rate of 32% – a respectable rate by any measure. In addition to the presented papers, this year's workshop also featured two keynote speeches and seven project presentations. In the?rst keynote, Jean-Pierre Hubaux (EPFL) gave an overview of “Security and Cooperation in WirelessNetworks”.ThesecondkeynotewasgivenbyPimTuyls(Philips)onthe interesting topic of “Grey-Box Cryptography: Physical Unclonable Functions”. The project presentations covered the following European Projects: S3MS, SeVeCom, BIONETS, CASCADAS, MOBIUS, EYES and UbiSecSens. Unf- tunately, the extended abstracts of these presentations could not be included in the proceedings. As the Chairs of ESAS 2006, we are very happy with the outcome of the workshop that clearly demonstrates the continued importance, popularity, and timeliness of the topic: Security and Privacy in Ad Hoc and Sensor Networks.

WithgreatpleasurewewelcomedtheattendeestoEWSN2004,the1stEuropean Workshop on Wireless Sensor Networks, held in the exciting and lively city of Berlin. Wireless sensor networks are a key technology for new ways of interaction betweencomputersandthephysicalenvironmentwhichsurroundsus.Compared to traditional networking technologies, wireless sensor networks are faced with a rather unique mix of challenges: scalability, energy e?ciency, self-con?guration, constrainedcomputationandmemoryresourcesinindividualnodes,data-cent- city, and interaction with the physical environment, to name but a few. The goal of this workshop is to create a forum for presenting new results in the?ourishing?eld of wireless sensor networks. By bringing together academia and industry we hope to stimulate new opportunities for collaborations. In compiling the scienti?c program we have been quite selective. Thanks to the e?orts of 90 reviewers who delivered 252 reviews for the 76 papers originally submitted from all over the world, a strong selection of the 24 best contributions was made possible. The Technical Program Committee created an outstanding program covering the broad scope of this highly interdisciplinary?eld: from distributed signal processing through networking and middleware issues to - plication experience. Running such a workshop requires dedication and much work from many people. We want to thank in particular Petra Hutt, Irene Ostertag and Heike Klemz for their valuable and esteemed help in the local organization of this workshop. We hope that you enjoy this volume, and if you were lucky enough to - tend we hope that you enjoyed the discussions with colleagues working in this fascinating area.

- Abstract
This volume contains the contributed papers and invited talks presented at the 1stInternationalWorkshoponAlgorithmicAspectsofWirelessSensorNetworks (ALGOSENSORS 2004), which was held July 16, 2004, in Turku, Finland, - located with the 31st International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2004). Wireless ad hoc sensor networks have become a very important research subject due to their potential to provide diverse services in numerous appli- tions. The realization of sensor networks requires intensive technical research and development e?orts, especially in power-aware scalable wireless ad hoc c- munications protocols, due to their unusual application requirements and severe constraints. On the other hand, a solid theoretical background seems necessary for sensor networks to achieve their full potential. It is an algorithmic challenge to achieve e?cient and robust realizations of such large, highly dynamic, complex, n- conventional networking environments. Features, including the huge number of sensor devices involved, the severe power, computational and memory limi- tions, their dense deployment and frequent failures, pose new design, analysis and implementation challenges. This event is intended to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners to present their contributions related to all aspects of wireless sensor networks. Topics of interest for ALGOSENSORS 2004 were: – Modeling of speci?c sensor networks. – Methods for ad hoc deployment. – Algorithms for sensor localization and tracking of mobile users. – Dynamic sensor networks. – Hierarchical clustering architectures. – Attribute-based named networks. – Routing: implosion issues and resource management. – Communication protocols. – Media access control in sensornetworks. – Simulators for sensor networks.

- Abstract
This volume contains the Proceedings of the 2nd International Workshop on Information Processing in Sensor Networks (IPSN 2003). The workshop was held at the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), Palo Alto, California, on April 22–23, 2003. Informationprocessinginsensornetworksisaninterdisciplinaryresearcharea with deep connections to signal processing, networking and protocols, databases and information management, as well as distributed algorithms. Because of - vances in MEMS microsensors, wireless networking, and embedded processing, ad hoc networks of sensors are becoming increasingly available for commercial andmilitaryapplicationssuchasenvironmentalmonitoring(e.g.,tra?c,habitat, security), industrial sensing and diagnostics (e.g., factories, appliances), inf- structure maintenance (e.g., power grids, water distribution, waste disposal), and battle?eld awareness (e.g., multitarget tracking). From the engineering and computing point of view, sensor networks have become a rich source of problems in communication protocols, sensor tasking and control, sensor fusion, distributed databases and algorithms, probabilistic reasoning, system/software architecture, design methodologies, and evaluation metrics. This workshop took a systemic approach to address crosslayer issues, from the physical sensor layer to the sensor signal processing and networking levels and then all the way to the applications. Following the successful 1st Workshop on Collaborative Signal and Inf- mation Processing in Sensor Networks at PARC in 2001, this new workshop brought together researchers from academia, industry, and government to p- sent and discuss recent work concerning various aspects of sensor networks such as information organization, querying, routing, and self-organization, with anemphasis on the high-level information processing tasks that these networks are designed to perform.
