The detection of harmful trace gases, such as formaldehyde (HCHO), is a technical challenge in the current gas sensor field. The weak electrical signal caused by trace amounts of gases is difficult to be detected and susceptible to other gases. Based on the amplification effect of a field-effect transistor (FET), a carbon-based FET-type gas sensor with a gas-sensing gate is proposed for HCHO detection at the ppb level. Semiconducting carbon nanotubes (s-CNTs) and a catalytic metal are chosen as channel and gate materials, respectively, for the FET-type gas sensor, which makes full use of the respective advantages of the channel transport layer and the sensitive gate layer. The as-prepared carbon-based FET-type gas sensor exhibits a low detection limit toward HCHO up to 20 ppb under room temperature (RT), which can be improved to 10 ppb by a further heating strategy. It also exhibits a remarkable elevated recovery rate from 80 to 97% with almost no baseline drift (2%) compared to the RT condition, revealing excellent reproducibility, stability, and recovery. The role of sensitive function in the FET-type gas sensor is performed by means of an independent gas-sensing gate, that is, the independence of the sensitive gate and the electron transmission channel is the main reason for its high sensitivity detection. We hope our work can provide an instructive approach for designing high-performance formaldehyde sensor chips with on-chip integration potential.

Sensor node location information is critical in many Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) applications with random sensor node deployment. In such applications, node localization using a faster area exploration mechanism is needed to initiate precise sensing and communication. In this paper, faster area exploration approach for mobility-assisted localization scheme is proposed for mission-critical WSN applications. Each Mobile Anchor (MA) node embedded with a localization module moves in the sensor field in a coordinated manner while localizing the deployed static nodes. The proposed area exploration scheme is implemented using a hybrid of max-gain approach and cost-utility based frontier (HMF) approach. The paper addresses the issue of sparse anchor node condition during the localization process. The simulation results obtained using Cooja simulator shows that the proposed mobility-assisted localization scheme results in accurate localization with minimum delay. The proof-of-concept of the proposed scheme is demonstrated using Berkeley static nodes and custom designed MA nodes.

Collective Perception Service (CPS) is under standardisation at European Telecommunications Standardisation Institute (ETSI) with the objective of enabling sensor-equipped vehicles and roadside units (RSU) to notify nearby vehicles of the objects detected by their sensors. This service is expected to significantly improve perception of vehicles and, hence, improve road safety. While both vehicles and RSUs can contribute in CPS, they have very different characteristics in terms of mobility, sensor field of view (FOV), communication coverage, processing capacity, and service integration cost. This paper compares CPS provided by vehicles and by RSUs, particularly their impacts on extending vehicles’ perception. We will first develop an analytical model that formulates the number of objects perceived by vehicles and RSUs and the success probability of CPM targeting the IEEE 802.11p technology. The analytical results will then be confirmed by simulation evaluations conducted using the VEINS simulator. The analytical and simulation results reveal that, RSU-assisted CPS significantly outperforms vehicle-assisted CPS, providing up to 8-times higher effective number of perceived objects. The results suggest a great opportunity of optimising radio resource utilisation without degrading collective perception by exploiting roadside infrastructure.

Wireless Sensors that are small in size and limited battery capacity are widely used for several different applications. For this reason energy efficient as well as cost of the overall network are the two main factors influencing the Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) performance. In this research paper, in Wireless Sensor Network, energy efficient placement of sensors on the uniform rectangular grid (as sensor field) is proposed. Also, distributed computation of minimum and/or maximum over such sensor field is discussed (for minimizing computations and communications delay).

Luminaire-level lighting controls (LLLCs), also called luminaire-integrated controls, have the potential to reduce energy use, compared with traditional zone controls, when used in an open office setting. Additionally, LLLCs can be installed without incurring the additional costs associated with the installation of connected lighting. Due to this potential for both cost and energy savings, the Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute conducted a study to determine how various parameters affect the energy savings of LLLCs. The investigated parameters were: field of view of the built-in motion sensor, delay time between when the last occupancy is detected and when the luminaire is turned off or dimmed, number of luminaires that turn on and off together in groups, and if the luminaires dim to a low level or turn off completely when no motion is detected. This study measured the occupancy pattern of an open office and then used that data in a computer simulation to determine energy use. The results show that LLLCs have significant energy savings potential in open offices with a 43% average energy reduction compared with the calculated manual-control base case. Results also show that choices made during LLLC selection (e.g., sensor field of view) and commissioning (e.g., delay time, grouping, dimming vs. turning off during vacancy) significantly impact potential energy savings. However, selecting LLLC products and settings for maximum energy savings can adversely impact occupant satisfaction. Lighting designers and specifiers should balance energy targets with the needs of occupants, including safety, comfort, health, visibility and wellbeing.

Subject of Research. The paper proposes models that make it possible to extend the Internet of things life cycle as a result of the sensory field clustering and the transfer of the interaction functions from the base station to the head node of the cluster. The efficiency of the clustered wireless sensor network was evaluated in comparison with the nonclustered one in terms of the residual energy parameter and the network lifetime. Methods. The Internet of things sensory field clustering method was used. The method is based on the idea of​equiprobable rotation of the head nodes, taking into account the level of nodes residual energy and the distance from the sensor devices to the head node. The time division multiple accessmechanism in the interaction of sensory devices with the head node of the cluster minimizes the probability of data transmission collision. Simulation modeling provides a tool for selecting clustering parameters while providing the required characteristics of the functioning of the Internet of things. Main Results. A wireless sensor network simulation model is proposed, which can find application in the Internet of things designing tasks. Estimations are given demonstrating the clustering expediency of the Internet of things sensory field at sensory field sizes exceeding the distance from the most remote node to the base station. Practical Relevance.Sensor field clustering provides the increase of the Internet of things life cycle. The proposed models will be useful in the early stages of the Internet of things design

The design and development of biosensors, analytical devices used to detect various analytes in different matrices, has emerged. Biosensors indicate a biorecognition element with a physicochemical analyzer or detector, i.e., a transducer. In the present scenario, various types of biosensors have been deployed in healthcare and clinical research, for instance, biosensors for blood glucose monitoring. Pathogenic microbes are contributing mediators of numerous infectious diseases that are becoming extremely serious worldwide. The recent outbreak of COVID-19 is one of the most recent examples of such communal and deadly diseases. In efforts to work towards the efficacious treatment of pathogenic viral contagions, a fast and precise detection method is of the utmost importance in biomedical and healthcare sectors for early diagnostics and timely countermeasures. Among various available sensor systems, optical biosensors offer easy-to-use, fast, portable, handy, multiplexed, direct, real-time, and inexpensive diagnosis with the added advantages of specificity and sensitivity. Many progressive concepts and extremely multidisciplinary approaches, including microelectronics, microelectromechanical systems (MEMSs), nanotechnologies, molecular biology, and biotechnology with chemistry, are used to operate optical biosensors. A portable and handheld optical biosensing device would provide fast and reliable results for the identification and quantitation of pathogenic virus particles in each sample. In the modern day, the integration of intelligent nanomaterials in the developed devices provides much more sensitive and highly advanced sensors that may produce the results in no time and eventually help clinicians and doctors enormously. This review accentuates the existing challenges engaged in converting laboratory research to real-world device applications and optical diagnostics methods for virus infections. The review’s background and progress are expected to be insightful to the researchers in the sensor field and facilitate the design and fabrication of optical sensors for life-threatening viruses with broader applicability to any desired pathogens.

In this item, a high-efficiency signal “on-off-on” strategy photoelectrochemical (PEC) apatsensor was resoundingly developed for target ultrasensitive analysis. Primarily, the heterojunction formation between Cd: Sb2S3 and La2Ti2O7 was contributed to the first “signal-on” state to improve the stability of the PEC platform. Secondly, V2O5 nanosphere act as a catalyst for H2O2 was used to label on aptamer DNA to consume electron donor for achieving “signal-off” state. Then target analyte was modified on the surface of the PEC platform, and part of V2O5 with aptamer DNA would be released from the aptasensor surface, thus, the “signal-on” state was realized again. In this signal “on-off-on” strategy, the PEC performance of perovskite La2Ti2O7 was effectively perfected with Cd: Sb2S3 sensitization, and broaden the application of perovskite in PEC sensor field. And the signal attenuation and recovery strategy were distinctly elevated the sensitivity of the aptasensor. In the preferred detection conditions, the proposed PEC sensor for analyte (PSA as an example) analysis revealed a wide sensing range from 1.000 × 10−5 to 500.0 ng/mL, own a low detection limit of 4.300 fg/mL. This smart response change mode also provide prospect for other target detection, and offer a reference to signal transform for other electrochemical method.

Flexible pressure sensors with high sensitivity, high flexibility, lightness and easy integration have been extensively researched in the fields of electronic skin, wearable devices, medical diagnosis, physical health detection and artificial intelligence. This review summarizes the latest research progress of piezoresistive pressure sensors, capacitive pressure sensors, and piezoelectric pressure sensors. In addition, high-performance flexible pressure sensors designed for different application requirements such as self-powered pressure sensors, multifunctional pressure sensors, and self-healing pressure sensors are also discussed. After a comprehensive description of the latest flexible pressure sensors, we discussed the current challenges and potential prospects of flexible pressure sensors. Exploring new sensing mechanisms, seeking new functional materials, and developing novel integrated technologies for flexible devices will be the key direction in the sensor field in the future.

Biothiols such as cysteine (Cys), homocysteine (Hcy), and glutathione (GSH) play crucial roles in maintaining redox homeostasis in biological systems. This Mini Review summarizes the most significant current challenges in the field of thiol-reactive probes for biomedical research and diagnostics, emphasizing needs and opportunities that have been under-investigated by chemists in the selective probe and sensor field. Progress on multiple binding site probes to distinguish Cys, Hcy and GSH is highlighted as a creative new direction in the field that can enable simultaneous, accurate ratiometric monitoring. New probe design strategies and researcher priorities can better help address current challenges, including the monitoring of disease states such as autism and chronic diseases involving oxidative stress that are characterized by divergent levels of GSH, Cys and Hcy.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to review the advancements in new multi-technology sensor products being developed or already serving the market and to explore such applications. The paper also addresses some hacking problems which may arise. Design/methodology/approach This paper is a review of published information and papers on multi-technology sensor research as well as contact and discussions with multi-technology sensor researchers and suppliers in this field. Findings Microelectronics and electrochemical technologies have been major factors in the multi-sensor technology advancements of sensors for a wide range of applications. Sensors are becoming much smarter; solving application problems better than has been previously possible with single-technology sensors. Multi-technology sensors in many cases may offer better resolution and are much more sensitive than single technology sensors in the past. Practical implications Readers may be very excited to learn of the many advances in multi-technology sensors which are coming to the sensor field. Applications that were previously served with more than one sensor or were not possible before are now being served by multi-technology sensors. One such application which many readers may not be aware of but may be using is the wearable individual exercise sensor. One such device is the Apple Watch which will be reviewed in some detail later in this paper. Originality/value No previous review of multi-technology sensing has been observed.

Findings Microelectronics and electrochemical technologies have been a major factor in technology advancements of sensors for a wide range of applications. Vision sensors have become very important, as applications such as drone aircraft and driver less cars have dramatically grown. Technology has advanced and so sensors are becoming smarter, are smaller, offer better resolution, are much more sensitive than in the past and address previously unserved applications. Originality/value Readers may be very excited to learn of the many advances in vision and other technologies which are coming to the sensor field. Such sensors are addressing new applications that were not previously possible which are now being served.

Low Resolution Thermal Array Sensors are widely used in several applications in indoor environments. In particular, one of these cheap, small and unobtrusive sensors provides a low-resolution thermal image of the environment and, unlike cameras; it is capable to detect human heat emission even in dark rooms. The obtained thermal data can be used to monitor older seniors while they are performing daily activities at home, to detect critical situations such as falls. Most of the studies in activity recognition using Thermal Array Sensors require human detection techniques to recognize humans passing in the sensor field of view. This paper aims to improve the accuracy of the algorithms used so far by considering the temperature environment variation. This method leverages an adaptive background estimation and a noise removal technique based on Kalman Filter. In order to properly validate the system, a novel installation of a single sensor has been implemented in a smart environment: the obtained results show an improvement in human detection accuracy with respect to the state of the art, especially in case of disturbed environments.

In 2008, a new class of pillar-shaped supramolecular macrocyclic hosts was reported, known as "pillararenes". Their particular electron-rich cavity and the ease of their functionalization offer possibilities for the design and synthesis of novel fluorescent chemosensors. Subsequently, pillararene-based fluorescent sensors and probes have been rapidly developed. This feature article covers the most recent contributions from the pillararene-based fluorescent sensor field in terms of anion/cation sensing, small molecule recognition, biomolecule detection, fluorescent supramolecular aggregates, and biomedical imaging. Meanwhile, we hope that this feature article will inspire more effort to be devoted to this emerging field.

The remote sensor networks are used for collecting area-specific data and retransmit them through radio for further processing. For proper mounting and initial functional test of sensors as part of a larger sensor field system is comfortably to use portable bridge devise for mounting and local adjustment of sensor system. The devise translates the sensor system radio communication channel to the widely used Bluetooth standard. Such way any available smart devise can be used as input-output terminal for communication and adjustment of sensors part of the sensor system. The created radio bridge device is compact, functional, cheap and a useful addition to any LoRa sensor system.

This study estimates how many additional cyclist accidents, injuries or fatalities are avoided or mitigated by adding a system which increases braking levels, the Torricelli Vacuum Emergency Brake (VEB), to a state-of-the-art Automated Emergency Braking (AEB) system. To obtain a realistic state-of-the-art AEB system, the AEB parameter settings were defined to fulfil but not exceed the performance necessary to achieve a full score in the European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP). The systems are simulated in a simple but realistic simulation model in MATLAB with varying brake deceleration and sensor field-of-view (FoV). This study utilised data from the German In-Depth Accident Study (GIDAS), released in January 2019, and the related Pre-Crash Matrix (PCM), released in February 2019. Cyclist Injury Risk Curves were created from 2,662 GIDAS accidents involving a passenger car and a cyclist. The sample of cyclist accidents from the GIDAS-PCM database used in the final simulations comprised 1,340 collisions between the front of a passenger car and a cyclist. Both data samples were weighted to be representative of Germany as a whole. Adding the VEB was found to avoid over 20% more accidents than the AEB alone. Although increasing the FoV from 75° to 180° for the AEB system increases its accident avoidance rate to a level comparable to the VEB, the VEB remains about 8-20% more effective in reducing fatalities and injuries, and thus offers greater safety benefits than simply increasing AEB FoV. While the initial accidents in the representative simulation sample are fairly evenly distributed over the vehicle front, the remaining accidents (those that cannot be prevented by AEB or VEB) are more concentrated at the vehicle corners and are further characterized by high cyclist speeds. High cyclist speeds and impact to the vehicle corners potentially increase the relative frequency of head impacts to the stiff A-pillars. We therefore recommend that, for passenger cars, VEB and other advanced AEB systems should be combined with in-crash protection, especially in the A-pillar area, to best protect cyclists from injury.

The properties of this material can be influenced by way of preparation or by the chemical modification of the surface. Porous silicon has many extraordinary properties as compared to macrocrystalline silicon; the most important one for chemical sensing is the visible photoluminescence at room temperature. In the presence of organic and inorganic analytes in the gas phase, the photoluminescence of the material is quenched. This phenomenon can be used for chemical sensors of chemical compounds in the gas phase. These sensors are very sensitive and give reasonable results for organic compounds. Photoluminescence sensor field uses for measurement several sensor elements with the modified surface. It is possible to use this method for the identification and determination of gaseous organic compounds. Summary Aim of the research was to examine influence of single sensor interval and application of single sensor vs geophone array on 2D seismic data quality. Seismic data were acquired at two 2D lines with different sensor configuration. Line 1 was acquired with single sensor on 25m separation between sensors and with geophone linear array. Line 2 was acquired with single sensor at 12,5m spacing from which we obtained two data sets: with 12,5m single sensor spacing and with 25m single sensor spacing. All data sets were processed in a same way, with optimal parameters for each data set. Geophone array is giving us better coherency of reflections on stack section, leading to more geological details we can interpret. With geophone array ground roll is suppressed on later times, giving us better resolution and higher dominant frequencies in deeper parts. With 12,5 m useful signal is better preserved and it’s not spatial aliased. Ground roll is more efficiently removed on 12,5 m interval then on 25 m. Recommendation for future surveys with single sensor is to further decrease interval between sensors. This will also lead to better removal of ground roll and preserve more geological information for structural and quantitative interpretation.

A chemical tongue consisting of 11 elements (four poly(p-aryleneethynylene)s (PAE) at pH 7 and pH 13, and seven electrostatic complexes formed from oppositely charged poly(p-aryleneethynylene)s at pH 7) discriminate 21 benzoic and phenylacetic acid derivatives in aqueous solution. The mechanism of discrimination is the fluorescence modulation of the PAEs, leading to quenching or fluorescence turn-on. The PAEs alone at both pH values and the tongue, consisting of the complexes only, discriminate the 21 acids with 92% (PAEs at pH 7), 95% (PAEs at pH 13), and 99% (complexes at pH 7) reliability after linear discriminant analysis (LDA). A sensor field with all 14 elements, according to LDA, discriminates all of the 21 acids with 100% accuracy.

International audience; In this article, we propose a new approach to model and optimize the dynamic sensor field for both internal network connections and LEO satellite connection based on BT Graph. Due to the shift of LEO satellite’s orbit at each revolution, a dynamic sensor field (DSF), which is able to redetermine its gateways, is suitable to improve successful data communications. It is convenient to present a DSF as a BT-Graph that aims to utilize optimization algorithms. Parallel search algorithms are also deployed for more efficient execution time when DSFs consist of a significant large number of nodes. The simulation experiments are performed on an abstract forest fire surveillance network to validate our proposed approach.

This work is to summarise briefly the history of the development of semiconductor gas sensors from the point of view of a researcher working in that field through several decades. Statistical evaluation of publication trends, literature review, device technology and theory of operation are included as well as some recent and earlier results of the author and his colleagues and friends working in the field of semiconductor gas sensors. The rapid development of material science and semiconductor technology had a strong effect on gas sensor technology in the past. This trend may be extrapolated to the future; the “More than Moore” principle will be valid in the semiconductor gas sensor field too.

In this paper, we introduce a method to estimate the drone location in a wireless sensor field (SF). The sensors are assumed to be installed in a field in a doublets form (i.e., each two sensors are combined to form a doublet). Each doublet in the near drone location can be used to estimate the angle between the doublet axis and the line connecting the drone to doublet’s vertex. The locus of this angle will form a cone. Using six sets of different doublets, one can locate the drone by considering the intersection of the corresponding six cones. Cramer–Rao bound (CRB) is derived for the proposed estimator. Also, simulation results are provided to illustrate the estimator’s performance.

All cells release low molecular weight organic compounds that possess finite vapor pressures at body and/or ambient temperatures. These volatile organic compounds (VOCs) may possess an odor and can be found emanating from all body fluids. As cells turn malignant, analysis of changes in these VOCs can provide insight into cancer onset and diagnosis. Previous studies have demonstrated that dogs can be trained to distinguish ovarian cancer tissues of various stages and grades from normal ovarian tissue and other gynecological malignancies with sensitivity and specificity over 95%. When trained on biopsied tissue, dogs were able to detect the VOC disturbances in peripheral blood samples with the same accuracy. Building on these earlier studies, we examined the VOCs emanating from plasma samples from primary ovarian cancer patients, patients with benign reproductive tract growths, and healthy controls. We used a three-pronged sensor approach to analyze the VOCs from plasma: canines trained on tissue and plasma samples, analysis using solid phase microextraction gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, and novel single stranded DNA-coated carbon nanotube sensor field effect transistors. Each of the three experimental approaches used in this study provided preliminary evidence that plasma from ovarian cancer patients emits a volatile odor signature that can be distinguished from the VOCs of patients with benign ovarian tumors and controls. Our results provide optimism that a diagnostic approach based on the analysis of the VOC odor signature of ovarian cancer is achievable.

Sensor nodes are densely deployed in the sensor field and are remotely monitored. The communication between nodes is also unreliable. An attacker can easily launch an attack. Possible attacks on sensor networks include selective forwarding, wormhole, black hole, sinkhole, denial of service, jellyfish. Wormhole is the gateway of all these attacks. After launching the wormhole attack, an attacker can launch any of these attacks. We have measured the impact of wormhole attack in AODV protocol in wireless sensor network. Also we have discussed some countermeasures against wormhole attacks and future research issues.

In wireless sensor networks, nodes are deployed in an area called sensor field. Sensor nodes are resource limited devices. Sensor nodes have limited battery power. Battery determines the lifetime of the network. Therefore, energy is very crucial parameter for wireless sensor network. Existing research is motivated by LEACH (Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy) protocol. We have presented several methods from literature for making routing energy efficient in wireless sensor networks. In existing methods, cluster heads are randomly selected. For selection of cluster head, energy is not considered. Cluster head is replaced for every round. Our proposed method is based on optimum number of cluster head, dynamic cluster size, multi hop approach and cluster headreplacement cost. Simulation result shows that network lifetime is increased using our proposed method.

A large number of nodes are deployed in the field, called sensor field. Sensor nodes are resource limited devices. Nodes are deployed through airplane or other vehicles. Nodes are not personally monitored. An attacker can easily launch an attack. Therefore, security is very crucial for wireless sensor network. Security comes from attacks. Major inside attacks on sensor network includes Sybil, selective forwarding, jamming, wormhole, flooding etc. Among all this attacks wormhole attack is very dangerous. Our proposed method for wormhole detection uses round trip time (RTT) and hop count. Simulation results show that our method has good detection accuracy.

The elemental task of a wireless sensor network is to monitor a substantial area which requires gathering information by the sensor nodes from the sensor field and disseminate to the sink node. Data dissemination from cluster head to sink node in multiple hops leads to non-uniformity of energy consumption among sensors which may reduce network lifetime. Hence, the concept of sink mobility came into existence. For the complete utilization of sink mobility, a random move with efficient data collection is proposed which is named as Dynamic Sink Mobility for Data Collection (DSMDC). Sink migration is based on Detected Event Frequency (DEF). In DSMDC, the mobile sink plays the entire role for collecting data from cluster heads by first reaching the grid set with highest DEF and then by taking a clockwise move with SDMA technology to collect data from the remaining grid set in parallel while returning back to its original position. Existing data collection techniques that uses sink mobility are classified and analyzed. DSMDC is simulated using NS2 and proved to be better in terms of performance metrics when compared with two more dynamic moving strategies, namely DEF-A and DEF-D, in which the mobile sink moves based on the ascending and descending order of the DEF.

This article considers the problem of improving the dynamic coverage and event detection time of mixed wireless sensor networks (WSNs). We consider mixed WSNs that consist of sparse static sensor deployments and mobile sensors that move continuously to monitor uncovered (vacant) areas in the sensor field. Mobile sensors move autonomously and cooperatively by executing a path planning algorithm. Using a simplified scenario, the article derives the optimal path strategy for a single mobile sensor to search two nonconnected uncovered regions with the minimum average detection delay or with the maximum dynamic coverage. The resulting optimal strategy confirms that it is better to search areas that are less likely to hide a target but are located closer to the mobile node, rather than heading toward the most likely area. Based on the insights gained from the simplified scenario and the theory of coverage processes, the article proposes a surrogate method to approximate the best searching neighborhood radius (a design parameter of the path planning algorithm) that optimizes the dynamic coverage and event detection time capabilities of mixed WSN deployments. Extensive simulation results indicate that this approach can achieve very good results, both for a single and for multiple collaborating mobile sensors.

The cathodic electrochemiluminescence (ECL) behavior of the ammonolysis product of 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTC–NH2) in aqueous solution with K2S2O8 as the co-reactant has been, for the first time reported, in this paper. The possible mechanisms have been investigated.
