This article explores Spain's positioning in the shifting currents of the later Enlightenment through the polemic works of lawyer and satirist Juan Pablo Forner. Forner's attempts to prove the existence of an autochthonous tradition of Spanish pragmatism and empiricism form an index of the penetration of intra‐Enlightenment debates into Spanish thought in the late eighteenth century. Forner, profoundly aware of tensions between Cartesian rationalism and Lockean sentimental empiricism across Europe, intervenes on the side of empiricism, insisting that Cartesianism is nothing but a guise of Scholastic hyperrationalism. The Count de Rethel: An Historical Novel (1779) can be ascribed to Georgiana Spencer Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire (1757–1806) as a translation of Anecdotes de la cour de Philippe-Auguste (1733) by Marguerite de Lussan. The action is set at the court of Philip II of France, known as Philip Augustus, at the time of the war with King Henry II and the Crusade with Richard I, known as the Lionheart. This inspired revival of fictionalised medieval history heralding romanticism in the age of sensibility refashions the codes of chivalry according to the aesthetics of the second half of the eighteenth century. This essay focuses on the interplay between fiction and history, between the present of writing and the rewriting of history through Cavendish's translational prism, featuring the Middle Ages as a golden age of heroism and the Count de Rethel as a paragon of ancient virtue set against contemporary men of fashion. I argue in the essay that the conceptualist understanding of the mind-world relation ultimately leads to the kind of view that Panayot Butchvarov calls conceptual or linguistic creationism. According to this view, “there is nothing we have not conceptualized”. In addition to being an antithesis of metaphysical realism, which maintains that there is a reality independent of us, the term refers to the kind of thinking that sees human cognitive experience (and reality itself) as thoroughly constituted according to our concepts. While it might be easy to attribute this kind of position to Kant as well, especially when read through a conceptualist lens, I argue that such a position is not in accord with Kant’s philosophical intentions. Using the Deduction and Schematism chapters of the Critique of Pure Reason as examples, I also argue that on the conceptualist understanding of the mind-world relation too much is read into Kant’s idea that sensibility and understanding must be cognitively compatible with one another.

This study determines the sensitivity and specificity of a screening test to detect perceptual abnormalities and whether there are differences between gender. Vision is a complex process involving visual perception. Any alterations can affect learning, so having a screening test in Spanish that is easy to use and reliable for timely diagnosis will reduce the percentage of visuo-perceptual interference during learning process. A total of 200 subjects participated, aged between 8 and 15 years old, with good visual acuity, and no strabismus, amblyopia, ocular pathology, or neurological damage. The Petrosyan questionnaire (screening test) was employed to identify symptoms associated with perceptual impairment, and a subsequent assessment was conducted to evaluate perceptual abilities. The mean age was 11.5 years (57% male; 44% female). The screening test indicated that 30% of the subjects were suspected of having perceptual alteration, while 24% were diagnosed with a real alteration in perceptual abilities. The sensitivity was 1 and the specificity was 0.92. The Spanish version of the Petrosyan questionnaire has high sensitivity and specificity values and is therefore considered very accurate for identifying the need for a perceptual assessment. There are statistically significant differences in perceptual abilities according to gender. The female group shows more symptomatology and a higher percentage of alteration in perceptual skills. We should not let one of Smart's masterpieces, the anticipatory Jubilate Agno , supplant all discussion of the very different but equally masterly Song. Whether we position Smart between Pope and Wordsworth or between the Quakers and the Beats, his achievement necessarily alters our understanding of poetic possibilities in the middle of the eighteenth century. In early-nineteenth-century America and Britain, authors crafted sensational, emotional, and widely popular narratives around the so-called murders of several show elephants. Using these narratives this article explores the interconnected development of Anglo-American understandings of elephants and animals, the usage of the term murder , moral codes about animal killing, and the relationships between these moral codes and laws and national identity. It applies approaches from animal studies, literary studies, anthropology, and the histories of law, empire, emotion, morality, and nationalism. Writers that focused on elephants as more human-like than other nonhuman animals, on elephant killers as moral deviants, and on elephants as sympathetic figures, encouraged Americans, and to a lesser extent Britons, to see other violence and killing in imperial and national expansion as morally acceptable. Writers normalized a distinction between so-called rational killing for food, economics, or settler colonialism that should not generate sympathy, and elephant killings that should be mourned to prove national sensibility and morality. Because the law seemed inadequate to respond to elephant killings, authors also argued that the people must create justice through their own emotional responses. The article provides an example for tracking how people focused attention on otherwise low-stakes moral transgressions to develop belief in their collective national virtue. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

But can we take just any perspective, even if the person we aim to understand seems fundamentally different from us? Focusing on the Spanish occupation of Tahiti (1772–1776), this text deals with the plan devised by Viceroy Manuel Amat to subdue the will of the islanders. My perspective takes the analysis into the realm of seduction, emphasising the key role of objects and bodies in the project. From a wide range of colonial sources, I address the specific forms taken by technologies of domination in particular contexts, the role played by the arrangement of bodies and objects in them, and the assumptions that made it possible to think of particular bodies as mouldable raw material in the Hispanic setting of the late 18th century. The paper studies the complexities of contemporary Pakistani female sensibility problematized by Pakistani chick lit. The Diary of a Social Butterfly is an intricate work of postfeminism presenting new female visibility and sensibility by challenging traditional notions of Pakistani womanhood. The study explores the struggles, resistance, and agency of Butterfly as she navigates through intersectional socio-cultural and politico-economic milieu of Pakistani society, creating an inclusive space for nuanced discussions on power dynamics and gender roles within Pakistani gender topology shaped by hegemonizing nexus of globalization, neoliberalism, and popular culture. It is qualitative research that studies repositioning of Pakistani female sensibility using critical angles of Gill's postfeminist sensibility, Dosekun's transcultural postfeminism and Mohanty's agentic third world feminism. The study reveals that Pakistani chick lit not only problematizes the polemics of Western postfeminism, but challenges the tropes of Pakistani feminism, offers nuances of heteronormativity, provides re-positioned desi postfeminist sensibility and becomes an emancipatory paradigm in which Butterfly enjoys autonomy formulating a paradox of postfeminism. Both Virginia Woolf and Annie Ernaux, in their respective works titled The Years, undertake an exploration of the shifting experience of women across two different periods of profound historical change. Reading the texts through the lens of Jacques Rancière's concept of the "distribution of the sensible," allows us ask to what extent works of literature such as these not only trace the shifting elements of a particular distribution of the sensible, but also provoke a change in that distribution by destabilizing and disrupting the smooth, unthought continuance of any such distribution. In doing so, we can attain a greater understanding of the complex historical determiners of individual experience and evaluate the possibility of undermining and overcoming those ingrained modes of experience. Jayanta Mahapatra's conception of poetry is the record of an evolving consciousness with different traces of distress, guilts, frustrations, contradictions and false starts. He puts emphasis on memory as a source of writing poems simultaneously identifying himself with other Indian English poets in quest for roots in his writings. He views poetry as an expression of inner world and problems about the relationship between self and reality. His poetry depicts what he observes around him. He is more focussed on ensuring the continued existence of man and his unrelenting struggles for survival in society. Mahapatra's poems create layers of meaning through irony and empathy, and carry a rich repertoire of memories, myths and metaphors from especially his own State, Odisha creating the poetic artefacts as they capture the lived experience in revelatory terms. Since 2008, in Flanders, we organize immersion sessions in a simulated context with the aim of stimulating student nurses and health professionals to learn virtuous caring. In this contribution, we first outline the purpose of this experiential learning: the cultivation of moral character. We come to the core of what we mean by moral character for care. We refer to Joan Tronto and Stan van Hooft to claim that caring is central to all aspects of nursing practice and is the basis of its moral quality. We also stipulate that caring involves the integration of action with emotions, motivations, and knowledge. Second, we briefly explain how the immersion sessions in the care ethics lab take place and, in particular, reflect on what it yields in terms of experiences for the participants who take on the role of simulant patients in this experiential learning process. We focus on the significant role contrast experiences play in these experiences. Especially the negative contrast experiences do not wear off easily; care professionals remember even long after the immersion session and continue to carry them with them as a "corporeal built-in alarm." Third, we discuss the role of contrast experiences in cultivating moral character for care. In particular, we explore the role of the body in the kind of knowing it cultivates and, by extension, its role in cultivating virtuous caring. By referring to specific philosophical ideas of Gabriël Marcel, Hans Jonas and Emmanuel Levinas, we try to understand how contrast experiences bring about an integration of virtuous action into knowledge, motivation, and emotion. This discussion of the literature of unrequited love deals with the elusiveness of love’s object in the world, and asks whether that elusiveness may be intrinsic to the passion. If love is dependent upon the imagination, this implies vulnerability to disappointment or unappeasable longing: but it also makes space for the imagination as creative function or power. The unrequited lover in the texts under discussion is significantly also a writer, a maker of letters or books or poems; the artwork is understood less as a displacement of desire than as a model for its instantiation in the world. Vertical jump is a fundamental metric for monitoring and regulating lower body capacities, especially in assessing sports performance through the countermovement jump (CMJ). In recent years, various instruments aimed at estimating vertical jump heights have emerged. However, ensuring effective performance monitoring requires that jump mats prove consistency in measuring jumps across repeated tests, i.e., they must prove reliability. This study focuses on evaluating the intra-session and within-session test-retest reliability of the Chronojump jump mat in highly trained female volleyball players. Ten athletes from the Spanish Superliga 2 league participated in 100 CMJs over two sessions spaced a week apart. A repeated measures design collected jump height data using Chronojump jump mat. The protocol included a 10-min warm-up, a 5-min rest, and the execution of 5 CMJs with 2 min of rest between trials. Intra-session test-retest consistency was assessed by analyzing consecutive pairings of the first five trials. The study reveals moderate noise for SEM (1.56 cm) and standardized SEM (0.37), accompanied high SDC (4.33 cm) and SWC (0.44 cm). Correlation analysis indicated very high reliability (ICC =0.89), high concordance (CCC = 0.82) and a moderate CV (5.97%). Regarding within-session reliability, no significant differences were observed (Paired t-test p = 0.08; Hedges effect size g = 0.09). Additionally, very high correlations between both sessions were observed (r = 0.86). Absolute reliability analysis revealed a noise of 1.65 cm (SEM), resulting in high SDC (4.59 cm) and SWC (0.47 cm). Relative reliability, assessed through correlation coefficients, displayed very high values (ICC = 0.89 and CCC =0.89), although a moderate standardized SEM of 0.44 was observed. The Bland-Altman plot indicated systematic errors of the mean of 0.41 cm without substantial dispersion. Linear regression analyses between sessions showed a high correlation (r = 0.86), with a systematic error of 6.65 cm (intercept) and a random error of 2.01 cm (SEE). To sum up, the Chronojump jump mat proves reliability in measuring CMJ in female volleyball players across both intra-session and within-session contexts. Background: Post-acute COVID-19 syndrome patients complain of sensory alterations, mainly positive symptoms such as paresthesia or neuropathic pain but also decreased tactile sensation. Using the Semmes-Weinstein monofilament test (SWMT), our study aims to confront recently infected SARS-CoV2 subjects with a control group. Methods: This is a cross-sectional, single-centric study. We performed the SWMT (North Coast Medical Inc.) on 30 patients with previous SARS-CoV2 infection (COVID group) and 46 controls (control group). These patients did not present comorbidities or sensory impairment and did not take any medications. The control group tested negative for SARS-CoV2 infection since the COVID-19 pandemic; the COVID group was examined for this study after the resolution of the infection. We tested the threshold of tactile sensation of the tips of the thumb, index, and little finger of each hand, one hand at a time; the dorsum and the hypothenar regions were also tested. Results: Both groups presented the perception of tactile sensation within the reference value. Despite this result, subclinical changes suggestive of the involvement in peripheral sensory nerve function have been identified in the tested sites in the COVID group compared to the control group. The overall mean target force (grams) was higher in the COVID group than in the control group: 27 (7) vs. 19 (10) mg, p < 0.001. Conclusion: Controls and the COVID group infection had normal tactile sensation thresholds. However, the COVID group presented a higher threshold than the control group, suggesting a possible subclinical perception of tactile sensation involvement of A-beta nerve fibers. In my essay I pursue the line of inquiry which has recently been proposed by scholars who have reconstructed the historical context of Wollstonecraft's feminism to bring into sharper focus what can be seen as consistent motives of her thought. Starting out from the thesis of Barbara Taylor that Wollstonecraft's feminism was deeply rooted in the egalitarian theology of Radical Protestantism (Barbara Taylor, Mary Wollstonecraft and the feminist imagination Cambridge University Press, 2003) I will argue that her brief career shows how, in her analysis of the hierarchy of the cognitive faculties, first she redefined reason by ascribing to it the power of intuitive apprehension, and eventually she replaced reason with imagination as the distinctive attribute of the human mind. Positioning herself—through Price's theology and moral philosophy—in the Platonic and pagan as well as Christian Neo-Platonic traditions, she arrived several years before Wordsworth or Coleridge not only at an intuition of the creativity of human thinking but at a definition of the imagination as the supreme mental faculty. As a result, in some emotionally highly charged passages of her Letters Written During a Short Residence in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark (1796), she constructed her own version of early Romanticism in England. These passages can be read side by side with passages of epiphany in Wordsworth's 1805 Prelude as the most powerful examples of the imagination leading through an investment in the quotidian to an apprehension of immortality. Introduction: The Valergen® allergenic extracts (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, Blomia tropicalis and Dermatophagoides siboney), developed in the National Center for Biopreparations to use them in cutaneous tests to the patients with allergy, have demonstrated a high sensibility and specificity. Objective: To determine the sensibility considering 2 different concentrations of mite allergenic extracts by means of needle cutaneous tests. Methods: An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study of 230 patients aged 5 to 49 was carried out. They were assisted in Ernesto Guevara de la Serna Teaching Polyclinic in Niquero, Granma province, during 2022. The analyzed variables were positive responses according to age, type of allergenic extracts, sensitization according to allergic diseases, as well as local adverse reaction. Results: In both concentrations, 20 000 UB/ml and 2000 UB/ml, there was a prevalence of the 5 to 13 age group (47.0%), the positive responses (27.8 and 25.7% for each dilution) and the Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus allergenic extract (93.9 and 89.1%, respectively). Rhinitis was the allergic disease with more sensitization (29.1 in the first concentration and 28.3% in the second one). The local adverse events were just presented in that of 20 000 UB/ml (3.9%) with an average wheal diameter of 15.9 mm (IC 95%: 15.4 - 16.4 mm) for the higher reaction. Conclusions: Mite allergenic extracts with a concentration of 2000 UB/ml were equally sensitive and safe than the established dilution of 20 000 UB/ml, which is recognized on a national scale by its quality as diagnosis method. Background: Sensory nerve coaptation has great potential to restore sensation after autologous breast reconstruction. However, blinded and randomized studies are lacking. We therefore present the preliminary results of our ongoing double-blinded randomized controlled trial that compares sensory recovery of innervated versus non-innervated DIEP flaps. Methods: Patients who underwent DIEP flap breast reconstruction between July 2019 and February 2022 were included and randomized. The anterior cutaneous branch of the second or third intercostal nerve was coapted. Pre- and postoperative sensory testing was performed with Semmes-Weinstein Monofilaments, Pressure Specified Sensory Device, and a thermostimulator, for tactile and temperature thresholds. Results: This interim analysis comprised 41 patients contributing 29 innervated and 38 non-innervated breasts. At 24 months of follow-up, the mean monofilament value of the flap skin was lower in innervated than in non-innervated flaps (4.48 vs. 5.20, p = 0.003). Touch thresholds were lower the center of the innervated flaps (47.8 vs. 71.2 g/mm2, p = 0.036), and heat pain was more often imperceptible in non-innervated flaps (42.1% vs. 10.3%, p = 0.004). No adverse events were associated with sensory nerve coaptation. Conclusions: These preliminary results indicate superior sensibility and recovery of protective sensation in innervated compared with non-innervated DIEP flaps. Although the results of the completed trial must be awaited to establish the full clinical impact, including highly anticipated quality of life outcomes, we encourage continuation of scientific and clinical efforts in this promising technique.

The eighteenth century is not only the Age of Reason but also a great age of feeling, in which sensations, emotions, feelings and affects redefine both the relationship between the human and the natural environment and the relationship between the self and the social, or the self and itself. If the “sensitive soul” shapes a new moral ideal, it also points out the importance of a human faculty which does not oppose reason, but complements it. In this paper I wish to explore the questions posed by the “rise of feeling” in the eighteenth-century French novel and the way in which it impacts upon a general understanding of the “human machine” and human nature. In this respect, I intend to propose a re-reading of two famous novels of the time, i.e. Montesquieu’s Lettres persanes and Choderlos de Laclos’s Liaisons dangereuses. Based upon recent research on the history of sensibility and emotions, our study examines the way in which sensibility promotes new fictional forms and norms of emotional behavior intended to open a debate on human nature. The conclusion that I will draw is that the French novelists of the time, even those who seemed less “sentimental” (such as Montesquieu) or less “philosophical” (such as Prévost or Laclos), did not ignore the then contemporary philosophical debates on sensibility and human nature, but tackled them from a more experimental angle by imagining fictional characters whose disturbed sensibility served to question the limits between the human, the non-human and the inhuman.

Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-1797) was an ardent believer in individual freedom and self-development; consequently, she frequently discussed the possibilities of women’s education and self-reliance in her writings. Being rather reckless in her life, she was often on the move, not only searching for better life conditions but also following her own impulses in her critical reading. The motif of intellectual mobility features her educational writings, argumentative works, novels, and her last publication, Letters Written During a Short Residence in Sweden, Norway and Denmark (1796) as well. In my paper, I will map the multiplicity of the concept of mobility and elaborate on the senses of escapism in Wollstonecraft’s travel-letters, moving beyond Laurence Sterne’s notion of “a sentimental journey” (A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy, 1768). Moreover, in Letters, in her solitary walks and fanciful reveries, not only Wollstonecraft’s inclination to the (natural and textual) sublime but also Rousseau’s ideas on exercise and movement will be detected (cf. Reveries of the Solitary Walker, 1782). On the one hand, my interpretation is contextualised by the late-eighteenth-century view on women’s limitations of “sensibility”, displaying the constraints the age demanded; on the other hand, I intend to place the travelogue in Mary Wollstonecraft’s oeuvre and highlight the synthesising quality of the writing as a piece of “travail” and/or “a labour of love”.

This fact became evident after the use of sarin by several members of the extremist organization «Aum Shinrikyo» for air infection of the capital`s subway in 1995 in Japan and by ISIL bands in Syria in 2013. Because of its physical and chemical properties, as well as its ability to be dissolved in water in any ratios, sarin can infect water sources for the long period of time. But the sensitivity of flame photometric detectors (FPD) is not always sufficient for the analysis of water samples for the presence of sarin, its precursors and products of destruction, especially in cases of necessity to detect the concentrations less than 0,03 ppm (3×10-5 mg/ml). We have found out that higher sensitivity of the detector can be achieved in case of the increase of the gas carrier (helium) pressure in the injector up to 25 psi, and the temperature – to 250 °C, single-segment temperature rise in the thermostat with a speed of 10 °C/min from 40 °C (1 min) to 280 °C (5 min) at a hydrogen stream in PFD – 75 ml/min, air – 100 ml/min, helium – 60 ml/min. In comparison with the initial method, the offered one is more sensitive in case of sarin concentration in water in the range from 6×10-6 to 1×10-4 mg/ml to 1,7 times. The approbation of the offered optimal parameters was carried out during the gas chromatographic detection of sarin in water samples during the OPCW Proficiency Tests, during the analysis of arbitration samples, during the scientific research and the obtaining of national accreditation of the Laboratory of Chemical Analytical Control of the 27 Scientific Centre of the Minstry of Defence of the Russian Federation. These parameters can be used successfully during the studies of any organophosphorous chemicals by GC analysis with flame photometric detection.

The travel chronicles En tierra yankee (Notas a todo vapor) (1895) by Porfirian intellectual Justo Sierra Méndez lead us to reflect on the ways in which they imagined the sonic and the audible in relation to changing urban spaces, the Mexico/United States border, and communication and transportation technologies such as the steam train in unequally modernized spaces. The narrator employs a terminology of musical composition and sound to indicate the emergence of an economic and industrial hegemony that reorganized the new noises that marked the modern rhythms of the first half of the twentieth century. Noise holds a prominent place in establishing and unveiling postcolonial and racist relations with the other (the Yankee, the Afro-descendant). The nature of the travel narrative as a genre was not limited to mobilizing bodies or goods but also encompassed aural sensitivities, enabling a reflection on the geopolitics of sound, and listening. At a time when ideas and discourses are developing about the need for a Latin Americanist front to counteract North American postcolonial impact, the problematization of Latinamericanism is manifested through noise according to Sierra. This article revisits Jonathan Glazer's sci-fi film Under the Skin, ten years on from its release in 2013, to re-read it through Michel Serres's posthuman philosophy as an allegorical warning about the ongoing ecological crises. Making this argument involves recognizing, through Serres, the crucial role of artistic practice in questioning our current neglect of sensible modes of being. Focusing upon the importance of 'noise' within Serres's posthuman thinking, this article considers the alignment between the sensibility of 'The Female' in Under the Skin – an alien in human form (portrayed by Scarlett Johansson) – and the virtue of sensibility advocated by Serres of being 'on the cusp of sense in the making' (Webb 2018): a dynamic position situated between the chaotic noise of the world and the limitations of human language (Serres 2016). In combination with Glazer's direction, the original musical score by Mica Levi and innovative sound design by Johnnie Burn are central to the argument. Vertical jump height is a key measure of lower limb power and performance in many sports and athletic activities. Accurate measurement of vertical jump height is essential to monitor progress, set goals, and design training programs. Besides, new more economical and manageable instruments are emerging. However, it is necessary to know if these devices can measure with the required precision and accuracy. This study examines the concordance (criterion validity) between a new portable photocell ADR jumping and the jump mat Chronojump. Additionally, the within-session test-retest reliability (internal consistency) of CMJ was studied. Twelve highly trained female volleyball players (age: 21.7 ± 2.9 years; height: 1.73 ± 0.06 m; body mass 64.3 ± 7.6 kg; body mass index (BMI): 16.6 ± 2.5 kg/cm2: training experience 8.5 ± 1.8 y). Following a standardized warm-up and a resting period of 5 minutes, 10 CMJs were executed, resting for 2 minutes for each attempt. All records were collected simultaneously by the ADR jumping photocell and the Chronojump Jump mat to compare data from both devices. The within-session test-retest reliability was evaluated using the first three jumps of all participants. The agreement between devices was near-perfect (r = 0.95; CCC = 0.94; SEM = 1.47 cm; Regression Slope=0.99), However, significant differences were detected between instruments (0.81 cm p < 0.05, ES = 0.2). Within-session reliability was slightly higher in ADR jumping (ICC = 0.93; CCC = 0.90; SEM = 1.3 cm; CV = 4.89%) than Chronojump (ICC = 0.91; CCC = 0.87; SEM = 1.6 cm; CV = 6.0%). Furthermore, sensitivity was higher for ADR jumping (SWC = 0.37 cm) than for the Chronojump (SWC = 0.45 cm). The noise of the measurement (SEM) was greater than the worthwhile change (SWC), indicating a lack of capacity to detect meaningful changes. In conclusion, the ADR jumping photocell is a valid instrument when compared to the Chronojump jump mat in the measurement of CMJ. In addition, ADR jumping shows high internal consistency values, therefore, can be considered a reliable device for the within-session test-retest in the measurement of CMJ in highly trained female athletes.
