Given the high prevalence of overweight and obesity amongst educators, this study investigated the feasibility of the 16-week Health4LIFE weight loss intervention for primary school educators living with overweight/obesity in low-income settings in Cape Town, South Africa. The research comprised two sub-studies, a pilot randomised controlled trial testing the intervention (10 intervention, n = 79 and 10 control schools, n = 58), and an investigation of the perceptions of participating educators and principals. Feasibility outcomes included reach, applicability, acceptability, implementation integrity, and a hypothesis-generating signal of effect on lifestyle factors and weight. The intervention consisted of a wellness day, weight loss manual, and text messages. Results indicated acceptable reach, with positive feedback on intervention components from principals and educators. Implementation was largely successful, though three schools dropped out due to scheduling issues. Barriers included interruption of teaching time and busy school schedules. The intervention group (n = 42) showed favourable shifts in belief patterns, stages of change, and lifestyle behaviours, with a trend towards weight loss. Control group (n = 43) changes were limited to dietary intake. The triangulation of results supported the intervention's feasibility in terms of primary and secondary outcomes. Recommendations for enhancement include adding in-person follow-up sessions and an app-based element to potentially increase impact on lifestyle indicators and weight loss. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigated the malnutrition profile of young males (n = 67) and females (n = 52) on remand detainees at entry into a correctional facility and determined clinically important predictors of body mass index (BMI) and maximum handgrip strength (MHGS). Measures included weight, height, triceps skinfold (TS) and maximum handgrip strength (MHGS), socio-demographics food security, meal pattern, food choices, understanding of healthy eating, physical activity, risk-taking behaviors, and presence of symptoms of depression/anxiety. Multiple regression analysis was used to identify significant predictors of body mass index (BMI) and MHGS, which were assessed for clinical importance using novel criteria. Fifteen percent of male and 18% of female detainees were underweight, whereas, 17.3% of female detainees were overweight and 5.8% were obese. None of the males were overweight. Consolidation of results on the clinically important predictors of malnutrition for both male and female detainees led to the identification of four broad areas for intervention, including prevention of risk-taking behaviors, education on healthy eating, alleviation of food insecurity, and lastly prevention and treatment of depression/anxiety. We conclude that undernutrition is the most prominent malnutrition problem evident among young male and female detainees at entry into a correctional facility in the Western Cape, South Africa. Compare dietary supplement use and associated factors between younger and older men exercising at gyms (Cape Town). Cross-sectional comparative study (self-administered questionnaire). Younger (21–31 years) and older (≥ 45) men exercising at gyms (Cape Town). 210 younger and 91 older men. Supplement use (frequency, reason, effectiveness, information sources, label use) and gym exercise profile and goals. 80.6% younger and 81.3% older men had used supplements in the past 6 months. Younger men were more likely to use energy drinks (50% vs. 29.7%; p = 0.014), protein bars (18.1% vs. 7.7%; p = 0.038), protein powders (50% vs. 8.8%; p < 0.001), amino acids (15.2% vs. 2.2%; p = 0.004), weight gainers (10.9 vs. 1.1%; p = 0.011), recovery drinks (13.8 vs. 6.6%; p = 0.026), creatine (34.3 vs. 4.4%; p < 0.001), glutamine (22.4 vs. 7.7%; p = 0.004), arginine (8.6 vs. 0%; p = 0.016), pre-train (11.9 vs. 3.3%; p = 0.04) and fat burner (11.4 vs. 0%; p = 0.004). Multi-vitamins, vitamin C and B vitamins were consumed by both groups. Younger men spent more hours/week exercising in a gym (6.1 ± 4.0 vs. 4.0 ± 1.7; p < 0.001) and doing strength exercises (4.0 ± 2.9 vs. 1.6 ± 1.2; p < 0.001). The main exercising goal was building muscle/strength (38.8%), to stay fit (21.8%) or to look good (15.5%) for younger men and to stay fit (41.6%) or healthy (41.6%) for older men (p < 0.001). Younger and older men exercising in select gyms in Cape Town use a variety of supplements. Supplement use and exercising by younger men seem to focus on muscle building/strength and fitness; that of older men on improvement of fitness and health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background Heavy alcohol consumption during adolescence has many known harmful health and social consequences and is strongly associated with numerous health risk behaviours. The consequences of heavy alcohol use during adolescence on nutritional status, specifically growth and weight status are largely unknown at this time. Methods Substance use, anthropometric indices of growth and weight, dietary energy intake and physical activity in heavy drinking adolescents (meeting DSM-IV criteria for alcohol use disorders) and matched light/non-drinking control adolescents were assessed. Results Lifetime alcohol dose, measured in standard drinks of alcohol, was orders of magnitude higher in adolescents with alcohol use disorders (AUDs) compared to controls. The AUDs group was selected to represent relatively 'pure' AUDs, with minimal other drug use and no psychiatric diagnoses. The growth and weight status of adolescents with AUDs were generally comparable to that of controls, and is in line with the growth and weight status of the South African adolescent population. A greater proportion of overweight/obese females was found in both groups, with this percentage tending to be greater, although not significantly so, in the AUDs group. Adolescent females with AUDs had increased odds of being overweight/obese compared to controls, after adjustment for smoking, physical activity and energy intake. Conclusion Anthropometric indices of growth and weight status of participants in the Control and AUD groups were generally comparable. Female adolescents with AUDs may have an increased risk of being overweight/obese compared to adolescent females without AUDs. The presence of an AUD in our adolescent sample was associated with higher energy intake. Longitudinal studies are needed to elucidate the effects of heavy alcohol use on energy balance, growth and weight status in adolescents as they age. Nonetheless, the current study contributes to our understanding of the impacts of heavy alcohol consumption on important aspects of adolescent development.
