Seasonal changes in phytoplankton community of Boztepe Recai Kutan Dam Lake were investigated on samples taken from three stations between January 2014 and December 2014. The phytoplankton of Boztepe Recai Kutan Dam Lake consisted of 20 taxa belonging to Bacillariophyta (12 taxa), Chlorophyta (1 taxa), Chrysophyta (1 taxon), Cyanobacteria (2 taxa), Dinozoa (2 taxa) and Euglenozoa (2 taxa). Members of Bacillariophyta was commonly observed in January and August whilst Chlorophyta grew well in September. Chrysophyta only occurred and recorded in high numbers in September. Cyanobacteria became dominant in spring, at the end of summer and also in autumn. However, Dinozoa was remarkably conspicuous in spring and fall as well as in winter in terms of prevalence. Excessive growth of Cyanobacteria, which is a characteristic aspect of mesotrophic lakes, was observed in lake in both April and August. Euglenozoa also occurred at the end of summer and early autumn. Phytoplankton composition was appeared to be affected mainly by temperature, phosphate and nitrate. Secchi disk depth, concentrations of plant nutrients (TN, TP), chlorophyll-a analyzed in the present study supported the view that the Boztepe Recai Kutan Dam Lake could be included in mesotrophic lake category. In the study, seasonal variations in species composition and seasonal growth dynamics in epi-lithic diatom association in Tahar Stream was studied for a period of a year. Tahar Stream is one of the important inflows of Keban Dam Lake that is the second largest dam lake of Turkey. Samplings were performed monthly at stations chosen in upper, middle and lower parts of the stream. A total of 41 diatom taxa all belonging to pennales were identified throughout the study. The genera Cymbella, Dia-toma, Epithemia, Gomphonema, Navicula and Nitzschia were represented by more species than others. Cocconeis pediculus, Cymbella affinis, C. Helvetica, Diatoma elongata, Fragilaria acus, Gomphonema intricatum, G. olivaceum, Navicula cryp-totenella, N. radiosa, N. rhynchocephala, Nitzschia sigmoidea, Pseudostaurosira brevistriata and Ul-naria ulna were noticeable diatoms w ith respect to frequency of occurrence and their abundance in epi-lithon. Variations in occurrence of diatom species and their abundance at stations were compared and discussed in relation to physical and chemical properties of stream w ater. The physicochemical values yielded that Tahar Stream has Class I Water Quality according to the Inland Water Quality Criteria. The study was conducted in Sami Abdurrahman Park and Shanadar Park, Erbil, (North Iraq); four stations were selected in Sami Abdurrahman Park and four stations in Shanadar Park. Water samples were collected in polyethylene bottles and algal samples were collected in sterile vial of 50 ml. The study was focused on the epipelon and phytoplankton composition during the study period. Water temperature at all stations was ranged from 11-16 °C. The results of water sample analysis showed the following records; Electrical conductivity ranged as 295-1370 pS.cm-1 and turbidity 7-11 NTU; Total alkalinity, acidity and hardness ranged as follows 196-390, 19.21-15.62, 165 to 220 mg CaCO3 l-1. Calcium and magnesium ion concentrations ranged between 55-96 and 25-30.13 respectively. Total dissolved solid concentration varied between 329-666 mgl-1. Hydrogen ion values were noted as 7.97-8.25. Dissolved oxygen concentration and biological oxygen demand changed between 2.61- 4.45 mgl-1 and 14.64 - 17.41 mgl-1 indicating slight organic pollution. A total of 32 algal species was identified belong to 20 genera and 5 divisions in algal flora of the parks. Green and blue-green algae appeared to occur with more species and more abundant. In this study, data on occurrence and abundance of diatoms reported by the five studies carried out between 1991 and 2005 in the alkaline Lake Hazar were mined using univariate and multivariate statistics. A total of 157 diatom taxa have been reported in phytoplankton, epilithon and epipelon. Cymbella affinis, Epithemia turgida and Gomphonema olivaceum were the most common taxa on the basis of relative frequency both in phytoplankton and benthic algal associations. Hierarchical cluster analysis clearly grouped the taxa into two major clusters, discriminating common and dominant species than rare and scarce taxa. Principal component analysis, revealing the spatial and temporal variation of dominant and subdominant taxa, suggested seasonality of diatoms in different habitats of the lake. Most of the diatoms recorded in Lake Hazar that are typical alkalibiontic and oligotraphent species occurred rarely or scarcely in phytoplankton and periphyton. On the other hand, reaching to high abundances of meso-eutraphent species indicated a response to increased nutrients in the lake. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, epilithic diatoms and their seasonal variations were determined from 4 stations along the south littoral of an alkaline lake (Lake Hazar) for a 1-year period. Temperature,. pH, electrical conductivity, total hardness, dissolved oxygen, organic matter, nitrite, nitrate, orthophosphate, total phosphorus, sulphate, silica and chlorophyll a concentrations were measured and analysed. During the study, a total of 67 diatom taxa belonging to 30 genera were identified. Navicula spp. (10 taxa) were the most noticeable diatoms in terms of species numbers and numbers of individuals in the epilithon, followed by Cymbella spp. (7 taxa), Epithemia spp. (7 taxa) and Gomphonema spp. (6 taxa) at the stations. The diatoms showed their best growth in late-spring and summer, and they reached their highest numbers in summer. The diatoms occurred in low numbers in the other two seasons. Introduction: We describe the clinical characteristics, treatment and long-term outcome of 19 patients with Brucella epididymoorchitis treated at the Department of Urology. Materials and Methods: Between 1998 and 2005, a total of 19 cases with epididymoorchitis due to Brucella melitensis were diagnosed at our hospital. The diagnosis of Brucella was made by isolating Brucella species from blood culture or epididymal aspiration or by standard tube agglutination testing and slide agglutination testing together with clinical findings. Results: Seven cases (36.8%) had undulant fever. Brucella species was isolated from blood cultures in 11 patients and from epididymal aspiration in 3 patients. Rose Bengal tests were positive in all patients. Total recovery was obtained in 12 cases with a 6-week treatment. Five patients (26.3%) did not respond to therapy and another 2 (10.5%) relapsed. Conclusions:Brucella orchitis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of scrotal pathologies where Brucella is endemic. Copyright © 2009 S. Karger AG, Basel [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Postoperative infections (POIs) are associated with prolonged postoperative recovery, delayed adjuvant therapy, psychological problems, and poor long-term outcomes. The study aims to cross-compare the ratio-based preoperative parameters to predict POIs in patients with D2 gastrectomy for gastric cancer., Materials and Methods: A retrospective cohort and single-center study evaluated the data of 293 patients who underwent curative gastrectomy between January 2007 and November 2019 in a tertiary hospital in Istanbul. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to assess the ability of laboratory values to predict clinically relevant POIs. The predictive capacity of the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lymphocyte-monocyte ratio (LMR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and CRP-albumin ratio (CAR) was calculated by the area under the curve. Then, the cutoff points were determined for all 4 indexes., Results: POIs developed in 77 (26.2%) patients. Patients with POI had higher Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) scores and a longer length of hospital stay. ROC curve analysis revealed that NLR, LMR, and CAR were significantly effective in predicting POI, while PLR was ineffective. LMR was the best ability to predict the POI. According to multivariate analysis, CCI score 3, NLR> 3.8, and LMR 2.34 were independent risk factors influencing the POI., Conclusion: Preoperative LMR was most predictive for POI. Although CAR predicted the development of the POI, it was not superior to LMR and NLR. PLR did not have any prediction for POI. In addition, increased comorbidity (CCI 3) was an independent risk factor for POI.

Introduction: We wanted to evaluate the therapeutic effect of intravesical heparin and peripheral neuromodulation on patients with interstitial cystitis., Materials and Methods: From March 2002 to August 2003, 8 female and 2 male subjects conform to the NIDDK criteria and not responsive to the previous conventional treatments were included in the study. Wisconsin pain scores, maximal cystometric capacities, and night and day voiding frequencies were determined and these studies were repeated in the 2nd and 12th months of the treatment with 10,000 units intravesical heparin and peripheral neuromodulation. Frequency of the treatment was once a week during first 8 weeks, once in 2 weeks in the following 8 weeks, and once in 3 weeks four times. Then, it was decreased to once a month., Results: The mean follow-up period was 13 months (12-16 months). Day and night voiding frequency were significantly better in the 2nd and 12th months, when compared to pretreatment values. The Wisconsin pain scores were 62.5 +/- 13.9% and 62.8 +/- 15.2% in the 2nd and the 12th months, respectively. The average increase in the maximum cystometric capacity was 54.8 +/- 27.4% and 52.5 +/- 31.6% in the 2nd and the 12th months, respectively., Conclusions: Intravesical heparin and peripheral neuromodulation combination seems to be an alternative for patients with interstitial cystitis not responsive to other treatments., (Copyright 2005 S.
