The use of CFs in automotive industry due to the need for lightweight, durable components has led to significant improvements in vehicle efficiency and safety. Despite initial predominance in luxury sports vehicles, the automotive CF market is rapidly expanding. Ongoing research focuses on enhancing Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRPs), addressing issues like poor through-thickness properties and interfacial properties crucial for load transfer. This work strategy involves incorporating block copolymers (BCPs) into thermoset matrices and modifying fiber surfaces to improve mechanical integrity and durability. A novel compression molding manufacturing method, aim to streamline production processes, making CFRP energy absorbers feasible for broader automotive applications. Mechanical testing reveals promising results, with modified materials showing enhancements in interlaminar shear strength and energy absorption performance.

This study explores the enhancement of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymers (CFRPs) for automotive applications through the integration of modified carbon fibres (CF) and epoxy matrices. The research emphasizes the use of block copolymers (BCPs) and electropolymerisation techniques to improve mechanical properties and interfacial adhesion. Incorporating 2.5 wt.% D51N BCPs in the epoxy matrix led to a 64% increase in tensile strength and a 51.4% improvement in interlaminar fracture toughness. The electropolymerisation of CFs further enhanced interlaminar shear strength by 23.2%, reflecting a substantial enhancement in fibre–matrix interaction. A novel out-of-autoclave manufacturing process for an energy absorber prototype was developed, achieving significant reductions in production time and cost while maintaining performance. Compression tests demonstrated that the modified materials attained an energy absorption rate of 93.3 J/mm, comparable to traditional materials. These results suggest that the advanced materials and manufacturing processes presented in this study are promising for the development of lightweight, high-strength automotive components, meeting rigorous performance and safety standards. This review article gathers the most recent recycling technologies for thermoset and thermoplastic polymers. Results about existing experimental procedures and their effectiveness are presented. For thermoset polymers, the review focuses mainly on fibre-reinforced polymer composites, with an emphasis on epoxy-based systems and carbon/glass fibres as reinforcement, due to the environmental concerns of their end-of-life management. Thermal processes (fluidised bed, pyrolysis) and chemical processes (different types of solvolysis) are discussed. The most recent combined processes (microwave, steam, and ultrasonic assisted techniques) and extraordinary recycling attempts (electrochemical, biological, and with ionic liquids) are analysed. Mechanical recycling that leads to the downgrading of materials is excluded. Insights are also given for the upcycling methodologies that have been implemented until now for the reuse of fibres. As for thermoplastic polymers, the most state-of-the-art recycling approach for the most common polymer matrices is presented, together with the appropriate additivation for matrix upcycling. Mechanical, chemical, and enzymatic recycling processes are described, among others. The use of fibre-reinforced thermoplastic composites is quite new, and thus, the most recent achievements are presented. The aim of this work is to study the effect of core-shell rubbers on the mechanical properties of CFRPs.For the preparation of composites, two types of resins were used, a three-component Araldite resin (resin-hardener-accelerator system in proportions of 100-90-0,5 by weight respectively), and MX 156, which contains 25 % core-shell elastomers and 75 % Araldite resin. Depending on the mechanical test, two types of carbon fibre fabrics (UD C415, G0926) are used with corresponding number of layers. The composites were prepared by vacuum infusion and cut to the appropriate dimensions by water-cutting. They were tested for mechanical performance, by bending, shearing, tensile, impact and fracture toughness tests, to compare the properties of CSR-containing composites and reference CFRPs. Fracture analysis of specimens was performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results exhibited a 50% increase in impact strength while the energy absorbed during the fracture toughness test was 4 times greater on specimens with CSR than reference.

The purpose of this study is to investigate a novel exploitation approach for a mass livestock byproduct, namely sheep wool fibres. In order to fulfil this aim, wool fibre toughened epoxy composites with an amount of 2.4, 4.1 and 5.7 phr were prepared via the hot press method. Initially, mechanical assessment of the composites was executed, in order to evaluate their mechanical integrity. The flexural and shear strength tests showed that the wool fibre-epoxy composites maintain their mechanical properties for up to 4.1 phr and no degradation is detected. Subsequently, the thermal properties were tested. Thermogravimetric analysis proved that adding wool fibres as toughening agent in epoxy matrix can prolong the endurance of the material while reaching high temperatures. The coefficient of thermal conductivity decreased by 30% compared to neat epoxy, something that is also confirmed through simulation, proving that wool fibre-epoxy composites can be considered as a promising insulating material, while exploiting a natural waste.
