Le présent ouvrage est issu d'un travail pluridisciplinaire sur les langages de la ville proposés comme thème du colloque organisé à l'Université d'Istanbul (CongIST'2019). Il témoigne de la diversité des réflexions et des études comme nous le montrent l'étendue et l'ampleur des travaux ci-présents. Le volume qui réunit 21 articles propose un aperçu général sur la ville telle qu'elle est conçue, observée, vécue, imaginée, discursivisée, entendue, perçue par ses habitants à travers les instances administratives, politiques, économiques, culturelles, artistiques, esthétiques. La première partie intitulée Ville comme espace signifiant réunit sept articles sémiotiques qui montrent comment la ville s'organise comme espace des pratiques, de la vie, bref de la signifiance; J. Fontanille, D. Bertrand, P. Basso-Fossali, E. Mouratidou, J. Thiburce et D. Tsala Effa abordent la ville sous ses divers aspects ; chacun des articles propose une réflexion sémiotique sur la manière dont le sens s'organise dans et pour la ville. La deuxième partie traite de l'appréhension de la ville dans le discours social et politique. Sous le titre général de La ville comme acteur politique et social, I. Klock-Fontanille, D. Öztin Passerat, N. Öztokat Kılıçeri, A. Djeghar et A. Djeghar, I. Arkhis et A. Balcou traitent de la pluralité relations socio-politiques tissées à travers la ville pour aborder le rapport de forces régissant les systèmes socio-discursifs. La troisième partie de cet ouvrage, Poétique, esthétique et écriture de la ville regroupe les articles proposant des analyses de l'esthétique urbaine dans les œuvres littéraires et cinématographiques. B. Westphal, A. Lévy, A. Kıran, S. Gürses Şanbay, S. M'Selmi, B. Karslı, S. Bankır Mesçioğlu et Ç. Yılmaz partent des ouvrages cinématographiques et littéraires pour montrer et analyser la mise en valeur de la ville chez les auteurs. Les chercheurs en sciences sociales et en sciences du langage ici réunis interrogent la présence de la ville sous une multiplicité d'aspects si divers que possible ; et invitent le lecteur aux nouvelles pistes de réflexion et de recherche sur la ville qu'est cet espace à la fois familier et lointain.

The chapters in this book consist of selected papers that were presented at the 3rd International Conference and Poster Exhibition on Semiotics and Visual Communication at the Cyprus University of Technology in November 2017. They investigate the theme of the third conference, “The Semiotics of Branding”, and look at branding and brand design as endorsing a reputation and inhabiting a status of almost mythical proportion that has triumphed over the past few decades. Emerging from its forerunner (corporate identity) to incorporate advertising, consumer lifestyles and attitudes, image-rights, market-research, customisation, global expansion, sound and semiotics, and “the consumer-as-the-brand”, the word “branding” currently appears to be bigger than its own umbrella definition. From tribal markers, such as totems, scarifications and tattoos, to emblems of power, language, fashion, architectural space, insignias of communal groups, heraldic devices, religious and political symbols, national flags and the like, a form of branding is at work that responds to the need to determine the presence and interaction of specific groups, persons or institutions through shared codes of meaning.

Internet-Memes sind ein noch junges Textphänomen der Sozialen Medien. Die oft multimodalen Texte werden zum Beispiel auf Twitter und Facebook massenhaft geteilt, adaptiert und verbreitet. Viele User nutzen das persuasive und partizipatorische Potenzial von Internet-Memes, um den politischen Diskurs mitzuprägen. Politische Internet-Memes sind also ein hochrelevanter und anwendungsorientierter Forschungsgegenstand (Stichworte: virales Marketing und Fake News). Dieser Band versammelt erstmals deutschsprachige Beiträge aus der Sprach- und Kommunikationswissenschaft, in denen diese Memes aus theoretischer und empirischer Perspektive betrachtet werden. Er bündelt erste vielversprechende Ergebnisse der interdisziplinären Forschung zum Thema sowie Desiderata für die Zukunft des neuen Forschungsfeldes.

The chapters in this book consist of selected papers that were presented at the 2nd International Conference and Poster Exhibition on Semiotics and Visual Communication at the Cyprus University of Technology in October 2015. They investigate the theme of the Conference, Culture of Seduction [the seduction of culture] and look at Seduction as in “deception”, not sexual enticement, but as a mechanism of attraction and appeal which has often been the case in many communication strategies and approaches used by mass and popular culture. Seduction has historic and increasing agency in visual communication—the urgency to entice viewers is ever more powerful in difficult economic times, in an increasingly hyper-real world – and designers are led to become exceedingly complicit in its strategies. The contributions here cover a range of approaches from theoretical aspects of seduction in verbal and nonverbal communication, public spaces, design and meaning, seductive strategies, and advertising design, as well as fashion representations and packaging design.

Der Band enthält Beiträge, die auf der 4. Jahrestagung des Netzwerks'Diskurs - interdisziplinär'2014 gehalten wurden. Der Fokus der Beiträge ist auf Diskurs als ein semiotisches Kohärenzphänomen gerichtet. Komplexe von Zeichensystemen, die aufeinander verweisen und miteinander Sinn konstituieren, werden in ihrer diskursiven Geprägtheit beschrieben. Im Sinn einer Diskurssemiotik werden diskursive Kodierungen und ihre mutuellen Beziehungen als Bedeutung schaffende Instanzen dargestellt. Diese werden beispielhaft in Bereichen wie der Ess-, Körper-, Bild- und Filmsemiotik, der Semiotik der Kleidung und des Internets, der Raum- und der Geosemiotik sowie der Musiksemiotik exemplifiziert. Der Betrachtung des multimodalen Zusammenhangs von Text, Bild und Ton kommt dabei ein hoher Stellenwert zu. Damit präsentiert der Band Beispiele interdisziplinärer Ansätze und gibt den aktuellen Forschungsstand diskurssemiotischer Diskussionen wieder.

The linchpin of the momentous paradigm shift that produced the new hermeneutics of everyday life was a focus on people as active agents in various cultural contexts, uses and practices, the merging of the conventional distinctions between the private and the public, the local and the global, the material and the symbolic, and the bridging of the agency/structure divide marking grand historical and cultural narratives. In their place, a wealth of new kinds of narratives were produced out what was traditionally taken for granted, condemned or discarded, unmarked, and overlooked as mundane, trivial and inconsequential.Upon concluding The Structures of Everyday Life, whereby he introduced the everyday into the domain of modern historiography, Fernand Braudel admits that “to encompass all the many and varied constituents of material life would require close and systematic research, followed by much synthesis and analysis. All that is still lacking. What the text says calls for discussion, addition and extension”. Despite the wide range of contributions that have advanced the study of the everyday in the decades that followed, Braudel's suggestion is still pertinent. The volume at hand is both a response to the need for more “close and systematic research”, for more “synthesis and analysis”, and a call for more “discussion, addition and extension”.

Organizational Semiotics: Evolving a Science of Information Systems covers such issues as: -Fundamental concepts such as'information','data','message','communication','knowledge','organization','system'and so on; -Properties of signs vital to organizational functioning, such as their meanings, the intentions they express and the valuable social consequences they produce; -'Architecture'of organizations when they are viewed as information systems, based on their semiotics features; -Understanding language in organizational contexts, for example, the limitations on the language used to conduct business affairs; -The empirical study of communications for requirements elicitation; -Applying semiotic categories (e.g. physical, empiric, syntactic, semantic, pragmatic, social) to various problems; -Organizational knowledge representation; -Business process re-engineering methods and the design of e-commerce systems.

Organisational semiotics is a discipline that is concerned with the interrelationships between individuals and groups, and between humans and technology, functioning in organisations and society. Organisational semiotics opens up the prospect of theory-building and the development of new methods and techniques to gain insights into organised behaviour and enacted social practices, in the presence and absence of various technologies. It shares common interests with many other approaches to information and organisations, such as computer science, computational semiotics, organisational engineering, and language action perspective. The common vision shared by these approaches is to treat organisations and related information systems and technologies within a unified semiotic framework, with particular reference to the huge range of issues that elude many traditional disciplines. The analysis and design of information systems develops methods for solving the practical problems but offers no rigorous, theoretical foundation for them or how information functions within and between organisations. The semiotic perspective accommodates the individual and the social, the human and the technical, intra- and inter-organisational interactions, at a level of detail that is required in the study, modelling, design, and engineering of new and alternative organisational and technical systems. This perspective is outlined in the chapter presentations of Information, Organisation and Technology.

This collection unites 21 papers mainly presented at the 21st IAUPE (International Association of University Professors of English) Conference held at the Valetta Campus of the University of Malta in mid-July 2010. Most periods of world-wide literature in English from Anglo-Saxon to the present day were represented as well as many aspects of language and linguistics. One section «Writers and the Mediterranean» was of particular local interest.

The French mathematician René Thom (Fields medal 1958) died in 2002. In this volume his contributions to biology, semiotics and linguistics are discussed by a group of scholars who have continued his work and have shaped the new paradigm of dynamic semiotics and linguistics. Thom's heritage is full of revolutionary ideas and deep insights which stem from a rich intuition and a sharp awareness of the current state of the sciences, including their potentials and risks. The contributions to this volume are elaborations of papers given at a colloquium at the International Center for Semiotics and Linguistics of the University of Urbino (Italy), in 2005. The central concern of this volume is semiogenesis, i.e. the evolution and differentiation of meaningful («pregnant») forms in the field of symbolic systems – from bio-communication to language and cultural forms like music, art, architecture or urban forms. The basic questions are: How are meanings created and further differentiated? Where do they come from? What kind of forces drive their unfolding? How can complex cultural forms be understood based on simple morphodynamic principles? Applications concern the perception of forms by animals and humans, the categorization of forms e.g. in a lexicon, and predication or other complex symbolic behaviors which show up in grammar or in cultural artifacts like the unfolding of urban centers.

Les textes ici réunis, approches thématiques et analyses de corpus, s'attachent à articuler ces deux versants trop souvent dissociés, celui du signe, celui de la dimension somatique du sujet. Signes du corps, corps du signe : c'est entre le corps du signe et le corps du sujet que se matérialise la signifiance. Du corps du signe dépendent les modalités de réception (d'appréhension du signe) du sujet, qui sont indissociables du corps du sujet. Du fonctionnement des systèmes langagiers à la dynamique des discours émerge une sémio-rhétorique du corps.

La ville fait l'objet de questionnements multiples : elle est devenue un objet de pensée qui fait appel à des méthodes, des modes de rationalité, des types de représentation, qui s'inscrivent dans des histoires et des philosophies différentes. Le groupe Eidos et l'association InformUrba ont réuni ici une série de séminaires qui permettent d'avoir sur le paysage urbain une approche critique.

Organizational semiotics offers a framework for understanding the processes that this project work entails, in particular the interaction between individuals and groups and between human and technology. The 8th session of the annual Organizational Semiotics Workshop held in June 2005 in Toulouse – the French capital of aeronautics and space – tested ideas from Organizational Semiotics against two issues from space projects on two illustrative cases provided by the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES) – the government agency responsible for shaping and implementing France's space policy in Europe – through its Technical Competency Centre in Management (CCT MAN): - The management of complex, highly innovative and multidisciplinary projects during their early volatile phases. - The management of risks faced by such projects that may run far into the future and beyond human intervention. The twelve chapters of the book are the revised contributions of the workshop to these issues along with general themes of Organizational Semiotics.

This volume, a sequel to Form Miming Meaning (1999) and The Motivated Sign (2001), offers a selection of papers given at the Third International Symposium on Iconicity in Language and Literature (Jena 2001). The studies collected here present a number of new departures. Special consideration is given to the way non-linguistic visual and auditory signs (such as gestures and bird sounds) are represented in language, and more specifically in'signed'language, and how such signs influence semantic conceptualization. This is the second volume of papers on sign-based linguistics to emerge from Columbia School linguistics conferences. One set of articles offers semantic analyses of grammatical features of specific languages: English full-verb inversion; Serbo-Croatian deictic pronouns; English auxiliary do; Italian pronouns egli and lui; the Celtic-influenced use of on (e.g., ‘he played a trick on me'); a monosemic analysis of the English verb break. A second set deals with general theoretical issues: a solution to the problem that noun class markers (e.g. Swahili) pose for sign-based linguistics; the appropriateness of statistical tests of significance in text-based analysis; the word or the morpheme as the locus of paradigmatic inflectional change; the radical consequences of Saussure's anti-nomenclaturism for syntactic analysis; the future of ‘minimalist linguistics'in a maximalist world. A third set explains phonotactic patterning in terms of ease of articulation: aspirated and unaspirated stop consonants in Urdu; initial consonant clusters in more than two dozen languages. An introduction highlights the theoretical and analytical points of each article and their relation to the Columbia School framework. The collection is relevant to cognitive semanticists and functionalists as well as those working in the sign-based Jakobsonian and Guillaumist frameworks.

Die Studien und Texte zur Sozialgeschichte der Literatur (STSL) veröffentlichen seit 1975 herausragende literatur-, geschichts- und kulturwissenschaftliche Arbeiten zu vornehmlich deutscher Literatur vom Mittelalter bis zur Gegenwart. Schwerpunkt der literaturgeschichtlichen und theoretischen Abhandlungen sowie der Quellen- und Materialienbände ist das Verhältnis von literarischem Text und gesellschaftlich-historischem Kontext. Als maßgebliche Publikationsreihe einer seit den 1960er Jahren einflussreichen Sozialgeschichte der Literatur prägt STSL zugleich die literaturwissenschaftliche Diskussion über mögliche Austauschbeziehungen zwischen Literatur-, Geschichts- und Sozialwissenschaften.

In der seit Mitte der 1970er Jahre bestehenden Reihe Germanistische Linguistik (RGL) haben Veröffentlichungen zu allen Aspekten von Sprache und Kommunikation ihren Platz. First published in 1986. The present volume is the outcome of a symposium on Gestures, Cultures and Communication, held in May 1982 at Victoria College, University of Toronto. This conference, one of a series of five colloquia which took place during the Third International Summer Institute for Semiotic and Structural Studies, was organized by the Toronto Semiotic Circle. The purpose of the 1982 conference was to explore the biological basis of gestures by bringing together investigators working mainly in the fields of anthropology, neurophysiology, neuropsychology and psycholinguistics.

The traditional gulf between the theory and practice of literature and the various areas subjoined under anthropology has hindered the development of some very fruitful perspectives in the realm of poetics and the general theory of literature (particularly in its narrative forms). Poyatos'initial idea of literary anthropology as the study of people and their cultural manifestations through their national literatures - without doubt the richest source of documentation of human life-styles and the most advanced form of our projection in time and space and of communicating with contemporary and future generations - has been enriched by the thoughts of a multi-cultural group of scholars from both anthropology and literature who at a first symposium on the subject attempted to define this area leaving the way open to many more research possibilities.

This volume contains selected contributions from the colloquium From Sign to Text'(Ben Gurion University, 1985) and combines the diverse interdisciplinary interests and approaches of the contributors in a fundamentally shared definition of language seen as a flexible and open-ended system of systems'revolving around the notion of signs used by human beings to communicate. The special interrelationship between signs and texts is discussed both theoretically and methodologically. The collection consists of an English and a French section.

La mise en question porte á la fois sur les postulats (philosophiques et épistémologiques) de la sémiotique, sur ses méthodes (notamment face à de nouveaux domaines d'investigation comme la musique ou l'architecture) et sur ses enjeux (en particulier quant au statut du ‘sujet'– sujet d'énonciation, sujet ‘analytique', sujet de l'interaction sociale). 'Several current linguistic approaches converge in rejecting the wide-spread idea that language is an autonomous system, i.e. that it is structured independently from the outside world and the natural equipment of language users. Around the world, semiotically biased linguistics (functionalism, naturalism, etc.) takes this position, which differentiates it very clearly from generative linguistics. One of the basic assumptions of such approaches is that language structure includes some non-arbitrary aspects, from the phonological through the textual level, and a great amount of research has occurred in the last decade regarding the “iconic aspects” of language(s). This volume focuses on generally neglected dimensions of language and semiotic activity, featuring contributions by philosophers, linguists, semioticians, and psychologists. After tracing the tradition of iconicity in the history of linguistic thought, the central section is devoted to specific analyses emphasizing the role of non-arbitrary phenomena in language foundation and linguistic structure. Specifically discussed are numeration systems, the gestural systems of communication among deaf people, the genesis of writing in children, and inter-ethnic communication.'
