Seminar and symposium planning and management is a rewarding albeit tedious endeavor. However, planning such meetings can be easily undertaken by cost engineers because the task utilizes skills with which the profession is familiar. The four phases of seminar development can be likened to phases in an engineering project. These phases are scoping, scheduling, staging and synopsis. Since there is a tangible similarity between both tasks, cost engineers can easily adapt their own professional skills for seminar planning. Steps in planning andexecuting each of the four phases are presented.

Insurance agencies can increase profitability, as well as the productivity of agents, by conducting seminars. Seminars can be conducted with several types of audiences, including existing clients, unattached policyholders, CPAs, attorneys, affinity groups, and corporations. Seminars can provide agencies with new prospects, but they must be conducted regularly, and they must be well planned. The topics of seminars should be generic so that a sales solicitation is not implied. The success of a seminar depends on several factors, including ordering materials at least four weeks in advance, confirming attendees, determining what type of equipment will be needed, and following up through telephone calls or letters. State Mutual Cos uses seminars to generate new prospects. Seminar topics include college planning, estate planning, and risk management.

There are at least 14 guidelines for developing, carrying out and benefitting from prospecting seminars. Topics chosen should be timely and the seminar should not be more than two hours. Agents should keep the seminar businesslike and make the information entertaining, making the participants ask for more information. The sessions should also be industry-specific and should not sound like a sales pitch.
