During attempts to prevent and control the COVID-19 pandemic in China, higher education programs shifted their traditional educational models to online models. This paper aimed to explore how Chinese universities organized online teaching and learning during the pandemic. It investigated the factors affecting the implementation of online teaching and provided policy recommendations for improving the quality of education in the post-pandemic period. The primary data for this study came from in-depth interviews with nine students and five teaching and administrative staff at eight major universities in mainland China. Literature was obtained in both English and Chinese from January 2020 to September 2021. Peer-reviewed journals, policy reports, and university documents regarding online education in Chinese universities were reviewed, and their challenges and countermeasures were investigated. The paper found that the implementation of online education was affected by various sources, including technologies, teachers' teaching skills, network information literacy, and students' learning motivations and self-directed learning skills. Based on the insiders' views, the paper suggested that to promote the quality of online education in the post-COVID-19 pandemic, higher education institutes and programs could develop their infrastructure construction, improve teachers' quality of teaching, and focus on students' learning motivations.

Convinced of the major advantages and effectiveness of an interdisciplinary approach in teaching, colleagues from American Studies, Economics, and Greek Studies offered a joint seminar for master's degree students on "Individual Goals and the Common Good: Perspectives on Utility Concepts from Ancient Greek Literature, American Studies, and Economics." We intended to expose the students to a new approach to significant texts and authors that address these key economic concepts and to integrate the perspectives from the three disciplines. In this essay, we describe the development of our methodological approach, the individual and common goals that guided us, the challenges that we encountered, and the extent to which we achieved our goals.

In envisioning the future of literacy, students' voices are paramount. Students' engagement in classroom talk increases their learning and communication skills, but without intentional implementation, classroom talk can perpetuate hegemony in contemporary classrooms. To better explore this phenomenon, we developed a study in a southeast Texas high school to examine the experiences of lower socioeconomic status female students. The study used a Participatory Action Research (PAR) method, thus encouraging student voice. The findings indicated that female students respond well to Socratic seminar, which can encourage students to take ownership of their learning and be more engaged in classroom conversations. The key themes included (1) establishing space, (2) teacher impact and influence, and (3) teacher progression. The article ends with recommendations and suggestions for teachers to cultivate gender-inclusive and equitable classroom environments, such as honoring student perspectives, encouraging critical feedback, engaging in self-reflection, and transitioning to more student-led activities.

This article uses fieldnotes along with student and practitioner feedback to recount the challenges, benefits, and broader learnings of engaging master's students in a participatory research seminar. The students developed research proposals about a real-world socioeconomic challenge with and for local practitioners. Proposals were consistent with the principles and practices of participatory action research (PAR). The planning, implementation, and assessment of this course was informed by feminist scientific philosophies of collaboration, situatedness, partiality, accountability, and a sensitivity to power dynamics. In line with both PAR and SoTL principles, there was an explicit emphasis on partnership, reflexivity, and broad forms of learning in both the classroom and practitioner meetings. The students were challenged by the unfamiliarity of the research approach, the need to navigate a new way of working directly with stakeholders, as well as the responsibility to the community that participatory approaches espouse. Despite the challenges, the students were eager to soak up local knowledges, reflect on their role as researchers, and contribute constructively if they could.

This paper presents a modified approach to subject-matter didactics, in which the focus is not on the content itself, but on the students' view of the content. The introduction deals with an overview of subject-matter didactics and the notion of beliefs used in this paper. The main portion of the paper deals with presenting the concepts of a book and a seminar based on the student-centered subject-matter didactics approach. For the first qualitative evaluation, selected reflections of students are analyzed. Finally, initial findings are summarized and an outlook is provided.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been evolving since the mid-twentieth-century when luminaries such as Alan Turing, Herbert Simon, and Marvin Minsky began developing rudimentary AI applications. For decades, AI programs remained pretty much in the realm of computer science and experimental game playing. This changed radically in the 2020s when commercial vendors such as OpenAI and Google developed generative AI programs (ChatGPT and Bard) using large language modelling (LLM). As a result, generative AI is now being considered for use in all walks of life, including education. In spring 2023, when ChatGPT burst into the public psyche, twenty-five education students in the author's graduate seminar were invited to participate in a qualitative study using ChatGPT as an essay-writing tool. Fifteen accepted the offer. The purpose in doing this was to give students in this seminar the opportunity to use ChatGPT in a supportive environment and to collect qualitative data via descriptive written evaluation and a focus group to comment on their experiences using ChatGPT. All of these students have master's degrees in education and experience as teachers in New York City schools. Their training and experience give them keen insights into pedagogical practice making them ideally suited to evaluate ChatGPT as an essay-writing tool. This article reports on the results of this study. Key findings indicate that the vast majority of these students had a good experience in using ChatGPT for their essays. Many, especially the secondary school teachers, would use it in their own classes.

The Washington State University Extension Forestry program switched to all online programming in 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Over 2,000 people participated in our webinars, providing an opportunity to survey a large audience about their webinar preferences. We found that people prefer webinars that are approximately an hour long and offered in the evening or late morning. Participants placed high importance on having a recording available, but they had mixed views on including video of the instructor speaking. Participants found online delivery to be successful and had a strong preference for online programming in the future.

Students enrolled in American Library Association (ALA)-accredited graduate programs typically are on a specific track to work toward their individual career goals. While most degree programs require of all students a shared core curriculum, students also typically must take elective credits, which help narrow their focus toward their individual paths. Students interested in subfields within librarianship such as public, school, and academic librarianship will take courses that further specialize their knowledge in those areas. While a focused education in their chosen subfields is important, it also may be limiting in how students understand the profession more broadly. This study uses qualitative analysis to explore reflections from students on a school library track who completed an elective seminar about academic librarianship. Findings indicate that this coursework in a subfield outside of their own allowed them to reflect on their own roles and responsibilities as librarians, find common ground and collaboration possibilities, and envision expanded opportunities in their own career paths. Educators can take this information to support students' exploration beyond prescribed career tracks, whether through offering and promoting electives across the curricula or through non-credit-bearing opportunities.

Background: The emergence of Generative Artificial Intelligence has brought a number of ethical and practical issues to higher education. Solid experimental evidence is yet inadequate to set the functional rules for the new technology. Objectives: The objective of this study is to analyse the experience of undergraduate students' interaction with ChatGPT and contribute to identifying the problems arising from the widespread use of artificial intelligence. Methods: Junior university students (N = 25) were assigned the task of working on their seminar essays with the aid of ChatGPT. Most students were novices with this tool (the study was conducted in the spring of 2023). Their essays were analysed qualitatively, according to the principles of the general inductive approach. Results and Conclusions: The initial attitudes towards artificial intelligence were almost equally distributed from enthusiastic to indifferent and cautious, with one student refusing to interact with the chatbot on ideological grounds. After the first experience, most of the students declared themselves adopters of the new technology. We have found some evidence for enhancing critical thinking competence when using ChatGPT, as well as examples of unquestioned reliance on its outputs. The tendency to personification of the chatbot was apparent in the students' essays. Implications: The findings show how easily the students embrace artificial intelligence and suggest a failure of any attempts for its strict regulation. This, on the other hand, underlines the need for emphasis on personal and research-oriented approaches in teaching and learning.

In a rapidly changing and challenging world, teachers as influential social agents can play an important and promising role to guide through but also bring about positive change to individuals and society as a whole. This potential stresses the importance of professionalization of teachers and the need for elaborate learning settings to equip (future) teachers as psychologically literate and reflective practitioners who systematically reflect and integrate practice and (psychological) theory. As part of the preservice teachers' psychology curriculum, we implemented a theory-practice learning setting in their educational foundation studies that aims at fostering preservice teachers' psychological literacy. Specifically, to reflect their own and other's behavior and to apply their psychological knowledge of learning and counseling principles into real-life counseling sessions. This study addresses the didactical concept of teaching psychology to non-psychology students and the results from its evaluation. In a quasi-experimental pre-posttest design with comparison group (N[subscript intervention] = 46; N[subscript comparison] = 102), we analyzed the effects of the seminar on the preservice teachers' reflexivity, their beliefs about the theory--practice relationship and their agency. Results indicate that beliefs about the theory--practice relationship and the levels of reflection significantly increase through the practice task in the intervention group, but reflexivity and agency does not.

Biomedical engineering (BME) spans a wide range of research fields and professional activities. Most BME departments use a seminar series to introduce graduate students to exciting research conducted outside their own university, learn about professional opportunities, and enhance their understanding of related topics (e.g., ethics in BME, engineering education, entrepreneurship). However, even a stellar lineup of expert seminar speakers cannot appeal to all graduate students--even though the information presented may be very important to that student in the future. Can we initiate active learning assignments to increase student engagement with all speakers? Our BME department developed a strategy to scaffold active learning activities to enhance student engagement in the graduate seminars. All speakers supplied three papers for advance reading and students were required to generate questions based on reading the papers. The questions were provided to the speakers in advance of the seminar. Both students and speakers submitted short reflection surveys after the seminar. With increasing graduate experience, students were also required to critique the articles, evaluate presentation styles, and answer the questions of other students. The requirement to read the papers and generate questions definitely increased student engagement with the speakers. The increased personal engagement was evident in the critical thinking by the students as they subsequently discussed trends in different fields, evaluated presentation styles, and learned about different career opportunities. The increase in student engagement had the added benefit of creating a positive impression of our students with the speakers visiting from other institutions.

The aim of this research is to explore emotional processes occurring during educational dialogues on civic and social issues (EDCSI) by asking what factors arouse emotions in EDCSI, how do these factors interact, how do they affect the participants, and how this effect can be explained from the perspective of group therapy. EDCSI involves a complex set of emotions at the individual, inter-personal, and group levels that cannot only be explained by already existing frameworks used in educational research. Thirty-three students discussed civic and social issues using digital media in two different settings: a three-day learning seminar for secondary school students and an undergraduate university course. Using a cued retrospective reporting protocol, the students were interviewed and asked to refer to their overall experience in the discussions and to emotional moments they experienced. The analysis of the interviews shows that factors that arouse emotions pertain to the personal, interpersonal, and group dimensions, and often interact with each other. The emotional processes described by the participants were consistent with factors identified in the field of group psychotherapy such as instillation of hope, universality, imitative behaviors, and interpersonal learning. We therefore claim that research about emotional processes in group therapy may contribute to understanding the multi-level emotional processes occurring in EDCSI and that psychotherapy practices may inspire educators in designing and facilitating EDCSI.

Diabetes mellitus and obesity are major public health issues that significantly impact the health care system. The next generation of health care providers will need a deep understanding of the pathophysiology of these diseases if we are to prevent, treat, and eventually cure these diseases and ease the burden on patients and the health care system. Physiology core concepts are a set of core principles, or "big ideas," identified by physiology educators that are thought to promote long-term retention, create a deeper understanding, and help with formation of critical thinking skills. Here we describe our scaffolded teaching approach in an upper year undergraduate pathophysiology course to educate students about these two diseases and discuss how learning about the basis of these highly integrative diseases from the biochemical to whole body level is a meaningful tool in the physiology educator toolbox to reinforce physiology core concepts. This teaching strategy is designed to engage students in the scientific process and hone their problem-solving skills such that they are hopefully equipped to treat and eventually cure these diseases as they move forward in their careers.

Technological advances have created a myriad of possibilities for university teaching, administration, and research. In particular, the internet makes it possible for teaching and meetings to occur when faculty and students are in different locations, and the use of such technologies has seen an unprecedented upsurge since the COVID-19 pandemic. In this paper, we explore a Family Science graduate seminar taught by an instructor 5000 miles away from the students (n= 7) and a teaching assistant (TA) who were in the same classroom. Using a feminist pedagogical framework, we examined students, the TA, and the instructor's reactions, emotions, and experiences during a 15-week interactive video conferencing (IVC) seminar. Focusing on discussions in the context of IVC, we share benefits and challenges and offer recommendations for using IVC. This paper contributes to the timely dialogue about discussions and emotions in teaching synchronously online and explores the possibilities and limitations of IVC teaching.

As faculty of an educational leadership doctoral program (EdD) aligned with the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate (CPED) principles, we acknowledge the importance of inquiry to develop scholarly practitioners. Applying the tenet of Inquiry as Practice, our EdD faculty critically examined the doctoral curriculum to explore ways to effectively prepare our doctoral students to learn and apply research methodology meaningfully. This essay details how the review of our research curriculum led to a pedagogical and curriculum redesign of our research seminar series. This revised research seminar series culminates in a course offered every fall/spring semester in the final two years of the program and intentionally has different faculty members teaching each course. We have utilized a backward design to create the themes/content of these seminar courses to better prepare students for their dissertation research.

Science outreach programs that enable real-time interactions between scientists and school-aged children are known to positively impact learning gains and students' perceptions of scientists. To expand K-12 outreach by scientists, it is important to build structured outreach programs which offer scientists well-defined opportunities, while providing school students regular and diverse interactions. We describe Talk To A Scientist, a science outreach platform in India, where scientists use a webinar-based approach to share their research with K-12 students (6 to 16 years). Running weekly for nearly 3 years, Talk To A Scientist has hosted over 100 live interactions, with a wide reach to participants across the country. Here, we outline the framework used to build Talk To A Scientist and discuss key gains, considerations, and challenges in the development of the program. We also suggest potential adaptations with which this framework can serve as a guideline for the implementation of similar K-12 outreach programs across diverse country- and context-specific settings.

My essay aims to develop my authorial map-account of Martin Duberman's various educational paradigms manifest in his experimental seminars at Princeton University, Hunter College, and Lehman College CUNY, 1966-1971 (and beyond) that I abstracted from his claims about his innovative educational teaching. I tried to develop a terrain of educational philosophical paradigms that shaped his goals, judgments, definitions of success, frustrations, and so on, and engage in a dialogic analysis of this terrain. His innovative pedagogy was driven by diverse and often conflicting educational philosophies involving democracy, dialogism, and therapy, among other values. I discuss the synergies and conflicts of these values in Duberman's pedagogy.

This article describes students' experiences of different activities arranged by a Swedish university in connection with their internship. The article presents two approaches for conducting seminars while students are on an internship. One student group attends formal, structured seminars while the other group attends seminars in the form of focus groups called huddles, where the theme of conversations is carefully selected and has its origins in students' narratives on their authentic experiences during the internship. The more 'traditional' formal seminars are perceived by the students as scattered, while the conversational approach based on personal experiences helps students to develop a professional identity. Conversational focus groups were perceived as the pedagogical measure that contributes most to students' development. This research emphasized the deep learning afforded students and the insights emerging from the conversations. The organic nature of the conversations enabled development in both intended and unintended learning outcomes.

This paper aims to describe the core components of a cross-disciplinary team science training offered in a Communication Science and Disorders (CSD) program delivered to 17 doctoral scholars in CSD, education, special education, psychology, and social work. The team science training model is offered as one approach to consider in preparing pre-service leaders and faculty in CSD to engage in scientific collaboration with other researchers from different disciplinary backgrounds. In addition to an overview of training, the paper includes preliminary data on participants' perceptions of team science training and recommendations for future offerings. This concurrent triangulation mixed method design study describes the influence of a science education seminar (SES) on the learning assistants' (LAs) perceptions of their roles in the classroom. The SES was developed to train undergraduate students as LAs at a Southern liberal arts college in the USA. The focus of the seminar was teaching the LAs how to guide students through the learning process. Using the LAs perception survey, a pre and post-survey was administered to a conveniently sampled nine LAs to observe changes in their perceptions of their role. An interview was given to eleven LAs at the end of the seminar to investigate their perception of the seminar and any changes that had occurred in their perceptions of their role as LAs. A test of the significance of the quantitative data was done using the Kruskal-Wallis Chi-square and the qualitative data were analyzed using Atlas software. The pre- and post-survey results indicated that the LAs' perceptions about their roles changed during the semester. During an interview conducted at the end of the seminar, LAs indicated that their views on how to approach students' problems had changed mainly due to the seminar. The interview also showed that the LAs felt that the seminar was valuable because it changed the way they viewed themselves in their role. Results from this study inform colleges of the importance of training LAs.

The objectives of this paper were to 1) study the learning model of the smart crematorium system, 2) create a learning manual on smart cremation management, and 3) promote the development of learning for undertakers to use the smart crematorium. This was mixed method research with qualitative research and action research as parts of the conduct of quantitative research. The samples were from informants that consisted of 10 monks, 5 community leaders, 5 academicians, 17 seminars, 30 participants, a total of 67 people, and content analysis according to the study issues. The research instruments consisted of 1) an interview form, 2) a focus group meeting, 3) an activity participation form, and 4) an activity assessment form. The data collection was as follows: 1) secondary sources, documents, books, journals, and research reports related to concepts, and theories, 2) workshops, 3) in-depth interviews, 4) specific group discussions, and 5) collecting data from measurement reports and analysis of dioxin/furans compounds to categorize the data and analyzed according to the study issues. The findings revealed that 1. A learning model for using a smart crematorium system for the undertakers: 1) filling the fielder with the reaper into the storage tank 2) turning on the air compressor to fill the tank 3) opening the valve to let air into the system 4) checking the wind pressure and 5) checking the air flowing through the system along the main pipes which would pass the Vimutti substances into the crematorium and smoke furnace room continued to for about 30 minutes continuously. 2. Operations of creating a learning manual on smart cremation management that contained details in the book: 1) the problem of pollution from cremation 2) the smart crematorium with new options 3) the benefits of using the smart crematorium. This would introduce the features of a new smart crematorium, how to use and the benefits of using a smart crematorium. 3. To promote and develop knowledge for undertakers to use smart crematoriums and Vimutti substance sprayers by organizing training to educate about dioxins and furans, organized training and demonstrating how to use the smart crematorium and the Vimutti substance sprayers. This was the development of a learning model to enhance the Buddhist way of temples and urban communities as a cremation model.

Successful honors programs inspire and sustain a vibrant and committed faculty. This essay presents an established honors program which demonstrates, through varied faculty commitments over time, honors as a valuable asset in identifying, recruiting, supporting, and rewarding a strong, creative, loyal faculty that benefits the entire institution. Authors suggest multiple ways for establishing and nurturing the kinds of relationships that enhance both honors and its dedicated faculty. Leveraging honors for professional growth and pedagogical development, these include the design of interdisciplinary courses and special seminars, mentoring of student projects, engaging in study-travel ventures, winning distinguished awards, serving on important committees, earning academic grants, and presenting at conferences. As exemplified in its long and rich history, honors continues to be an incubating space for faculty development and student success.

Introduction to Primary Literature (IPL) courses can be early-career precursors to undergraduate research experiences, whereby students can become familiar with potential mentors and their research toward better alignment with student/faculty interests and goals. IPL courses have been shown to increase student science self-efficacy and understanding of the nature of science to levels congruent with students entering Course-based Undergraduate Experiences (CUREs) and Faculty-Led Research Experiences (FLREs), which may increase the number and diversity of students engaging in these high-impact activities. Further research is needed to understand how an IPL course can impact students' science identity, defined as the extent to which one relates to science, which has been associated with student success and persistence in STEM degree programs. This study employed a quasi-experimental, mixed methods approach to explore the impacts of engaging with the products of research through reading primary research articles, communicating scientifically, and interacting with scientists of various levels on the science identities of undergraduate students enrolled in a seminar-style biology IPL course at a large, private, research-intensive institution in the Northeastern United States. Pre- and post-course surveys, as well as a focus group interview, were used to collect student information and measure the science identity of participants. Interpretation of the quantitative data and themes drawn from the qualitative responses are presented herein, notably that students became more confident in their abilities to understand science and scientific literature and in their competence as scientists in training.

Students with disabilities are increasingly receiving their instruction in inclusive classrooms. General education teachers continue to report a lack of preparation to address their needs. This study examined the impact of a 6-hour professional development seminar on the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework to determine if preservice general and special education teachers' overall performance in lesson design to reduce barriers, identified through increased attention to student variability, improved. Two lesson plans, preseminar and postseminar, from 242 participants were scored using a modified education field experience (EFE) rubric that included 19 evaluation criteria. A Rasch analysis was used to determine pretest and posttest scoring validity and to enable regression analysis with a continuous outcome variable. Results indicated that the seminar resulted in higher scores for the participants' postmeasures, controlling for the premeasure effects, as well as unique findings based on subject matter. These findings are presented, as well as implications for future research and practice.

Socratic pedagogy is a systematized method that encourages learners to question themselves and each other - without being judgmental. It aims at boosting empathy and developing an ability to reach informed conclusions. It supports the acquisition of social skills and fosters collaboration while helping them to think critically, deepen their understanding, and find reality in equilibrium. In reaching for insights, students acquire vital skills, knowledge, and practices. Socratic learning depends on how participants can use systematic dialogue. This study monitored the effects of students' use of specific discourse markers (DMs) over a series of speaking tasks undertaken in Socratic seminars. Each task was devised to support the learning objectives of a standardized English language course given to pre-service English teachers in Turkey. Recordings were used to provide feedback to ten participants and then analyzed for appropriate use of spoken DMs. The findings of the study revealed solid evidence of accurate and contextually appropriate DM usage as the number of appropriate DM use increased significantly in the seminars conducted at the end of the intervention period.

This mixed methods study was completed with principal preparation candidates. Data was collected using the Multicultural Efficacy Scale (MES) and focus group interviews. Principal candidates' multicultural efficacy was measured before and after participating in monthly diversity seminars and reflections. The diversity seminars provided first-person storytelling from diverse members of school communities including individuals from different LGBTQ, race, religion, socio-economic status, and language backgrounds. The study found principal candidates had improved multicultural efficacy at the end of the year-long diversity series. Research shows this could lead to supportive behaviors as social justice-oriented school leaders.

The process of becoming an expert teacher, which is one of the career steps of teachers, and the evaluation of this process are important and necessary in terms of education. The general purpose of this study is to obtain the opinions of primary school teachers about the Expert Teacher Training Program Seminar (ETTPS). In the study, a qualitative research approach was adopted, and a case study design was preferred. The data were collected from the primary school teachers who received the aforementioned seminar at the beginning of the fall semester of the 2022-2023 academic year. The research group consisted of 24 primary school teachers who were identified by the maximum diversity sampling method among the primary school teachers working in public primary schools in a province of Turkey. The research data were analyzed using content analysis. Primary school teachers listed the concepts related to expert teaching as experience, seniority, educational status, professional development, presentation skills, and competence. While the primary school teachers stated that the training was both necessary and not necessary, they also stated that the training they received did not contribute to their professional development. Most of the primary school teachers stated that the training they received did not meet their expectations. In addition, it was revealed that the online delivery of the ETTPS caused some problems in terms of time, internet, and devices in terms of follow-up. Primary school teachers offered some suggestions for changing the prerequisites for the current career ladder. In particular, they suggested that the trainings should be long-term, interactive, and face-to-face, and that examples with active participation should be provided for the implementation of different education systems. It is thought that this research will benefit all stakeholders, especially program developers, in terms of the career ladder of the teaching profession.

This study aimed to investigate the use of mobile phones as a learning tool among postgraduate students at Sokoine University of Agriculture. The study adopted a cross-sectional research design. The sample size was 120 respondents selected through the stratified sampling technique and data were collected using structured questionnaires. Descriptive statistics such as frequency and percentages were used for data analysis, while linear regression was used to analyse factors influencing students' use of mobile phones as a learning tool. The findings show that most students used mobile phones for sharing lecture notes and reading lecture notes as well as downloading academic materials. Furthermore, the study findings reveal that factors influencing students' use of the mobile phone as a learning tool were perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and attitude. The study concludes that use of mobile phones as a learning tool is high among the postgraduate students. Moreover, the study recommends that seminars should be provided to students on the effective utilization of their mobile phones for academic purposes to enhance learning.

Approaches toward engaging undergraduates in scientific research have included research experiences based in faculty laboratories (FLREs), course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs), and courses rooted in primary research literature that may be precursors to research experiences. We examined outcomes for undergraduate biology students enrolled in FLREs, CUREs, and a literature-based introduction to research seminar course. Students engaging with research that involved authentic, student-centered inquiry had significant increases in research skills, but little change in their self-efficacy. Students engaging with research in a more structured or guided experience did not exhibit the same gains in skills. Additionally, although they began with comparatively low self-efficacy scores, students enrolled in the seminar course increased in self-efficacy to levels equivalent to those of students engaging in FLREs. Across all types of engagement, students who reported a change in their future goals post-graduation tended to add pursuing a Ph.D. to their future plans - this was most evident in the seminar course. We therefore recommend an introduction to research seminar course for novice students toward building self-efficacy early in their careers as a way to prepare for - and potentially increase - engagement in CUREs and FLREs, and matching undergraduates with potential mentors for future research experiences.

This study investigates the challenge of establishing social presence in professional development webinars, which lack face-to-face interaction and physical presence. Using the Community of Inquiry framework, the research examines factors influencing teacher social presence. Following phonomyography research methodology, research data were collected from eight university teachers through a semi-structured questionnaire. Findings highlight attempts made to foster social presence in professional development webinars, with cultural backgrounds of speakers and participants positively influencing the outcome. Practical implications for enhancing social presence in webinars are derived from the study. By shedding light on the multifaceted nature of social presence and its influential factors, this research contributes to the understanding of professional development webinars, emphasising the importance of creating a social presence within the digital learning environment.

Upon the convergence of the twin epidemics of COVID-19 and racial injustice in 2020, the Delaware Dance Education Organization (DDEO) responded by creating and presenting interactive professional development webinars that ranged from sharing how dance history is a microcosm of the world to the impact culture has on personal behaviors. Through the lens of public scholarship, the virtual programming format allowed DDEO to reach dance populations in Delaware and beyond. Groundswell, a series of four webinars presented a consideration of the impact racism has in the dance world. Solos@Home invited participants to create, share, and virtually perform dance works based on material presented in Groundswell. Solos@Home II continued in this modality highlighting the theme of environmental justice. The value of activism was a key enduring understanding for these projects. DDEO continues to support and advance dance education while listening and responding to the immediate needs of the community.

This case study examined how the academic advising (hence, advising) component of a Grow Your Own (GYO) teacher program can be tailored to honor bilingual/bicultural paraprofessionals' (hence, BL/BC paras) assets and differential needs. Data collection strategies included participant observation, interviews, a focus group, field notes, and documentation. Thematic data analysis suggested that socioculturally mediated advising involves some aspects of mentoring and includes (a) taking the time to know and value paraprofessionals' biographies, (b) personalizing and attending to paraprofessionals' psychosocial needs, (c) building supportive relationships through the GYO seminar, and (d) advocating for institutional accommodations. Implications for future research consider how socioculturally mediated advising including aspects of mentoring needs to be better understood in BL/BC paras teacher pipeline programs and the field of teacher development.

This study investigates undergraduate students' attitudes towards and experiences with open education practices (OEP) in a research-based linguistics seminar. Data was collected through written assignments in which two groups of students in subsequent terms were surveyed on their willingness to publish (a) academic posters in open access (OA); (b) teaching concepts as open educational resources (OER); and (c) personal reflections on the research process in OA. Through qualitative data analysis, we examine students' apprehensions and motivations to publish their artifacts. We find that key motivators are a sense of belonging, personal reward, and an active contribution to a culture of collaboration, whereas apprehensions are grounded in concerns about the quality of their work, uncertainties about licensing, and fear of vulnerability through visibility. We show that open science practices and OEP can be combined synergistically in process-oriented, research-based, and collaborative seminar concepts, and we formulate recommendations for lecturers on how to successfully address OEP in the classroom.

Social-communication deficits associated with autism spectrum disorder often lead to undesirable outcomes in other domains, such as interpersonal relationships, employment, and participation in community activities. Parents may be ideal implementers of interventions to address these deficits when provided with instruction that is efficacious and feasible. This study evaluated a web-based group training and multimodal communication protocol of individualized parent coaching to improve parent implementation of communication intervention components. Results indicated a moderate functional relation between the parent-coaching intervention and parent implementation of the instructional behaviors. Implications and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Understanding how power is communicated by instructors and students is important to student motivation and learning. To examine how power is communicated online by instructors and how receptive (or not) students are to this, I examined four online graduate seminars using two analytical tools: community of inquiry (COI) theory and McCroskey and Richmond's (1983) five bases of power framework. To communicate power, instructors drew from expert, referent, and legitimate power bases to cultivate teaching and social presence and to help students acquire cognitive presence. Direct instruction, feedback, and tools such as the syllabus and discussion board helped instructors communicate power.

History, the major storehouse of information, informs us about the important relationship between people and society and increases our understanding of basic societal values and institutional arrangements. A recent "New York Times" op-ed described "The Dangerous Decline of the Historical Profession." Likewise for historical content in social work education, exacerbated by the 1970s' rise of neoliberalism and the profession's long marginalization of historical research and teaching. The Social Welfare History Group renews its call to bring historical content back into social work education and to correct its deep-seated race, class, gender, and colonizing distortions. To ensure that all social work courses include history, we can revive the value historical knowledge; prepare a cadre of historical researchers and instructors; financially support emerging scholars and develop a pipeline of history-informed faculty to teach the next generation of social workers.

Purpose: This paper aims to investigate how mixed-reality (MR) can be used to enhance inclusivity in synchronous working activities where groups of people may be present either face-to-face or online - focusing on blended learning in the higher education (HE) context. Design/methodology/approach: In a research methods module, 140 university master's-level students were given the option to attend and engage in seminars/practical sessions either in a real lecture room or online through a virtual version of an equivalent environment, accessible on everyday devices. The MR platform provided two-way video "windows" enabling all students on the module to freely interact with staff and their peers. Attendance was recorded throughout the semester and survey data was captured after all sessions (33% response rate). In addition, student activity was video recorded within both the real and virtual spaces. Findings: Attendance was high throughout the semester and students were very positive about this novel approach to their education. Students chose to either engage purely in-person, online or as a mixture of the two; performance on the module was not impacted by this decision. The survey highlighted several factors that impacted on students' choice of learning space, including those related to intrinsic characteristics of individual students (e.g. desire for traditional/novel social interactions) and those related to extrinsic influences (e.g. weather and travel demands). Video analysis revealed numerous differences in the behaviours exhibited across the virtual and real spaces, related to individual versus team mentalities. Practical implications: Conclusions are drawn regarding how MR can be used in HE and potentially other work-related contexts to enhance engagement, a sense of community and ultimately learning/productivity outcomes. Originality/value: This study investigated how a large (>100) cohort of students responded to an MR blended learning experience across a whole semester. In this respect, to the best of the author's knowledge, this is the first study to consider such issues at this scale in a university education setting.

We joined an initiative to engage faculty and undergraduate students in research by scheduling regular early college-level mathematics research presentations with pre- and post-lecture exercises. While our program featured six talks that were predominantly in the mathematical biosciences, the concept of creating themed topics for presentations can be extended to other areas of mathematical research, and the length of the program can also be scaled. This article discusses three of the presentations, including QR codes to access their recordings. The purpose of this article is to present the materials of the talks from this initiative and how faculty members can use the materials for potential explorations with students. The hope is the audience may use these, as presented, for study with students, with minimal start-up investment and to use this as a model for future undergraduate research efforts.

The Inter-University Consortium for Doctoral Courses in Public Budgeting, Finance, and Financial Management is the first collaborative project for online doctoral courses in public affairs. This article provides an account of the consortium's initiation, establishment, and operation for the pilot round. The consortium fills a niche in doctoral education and opens up a path for smooth cooperation between universities by accessing instructors who are experts in subfields of public budgeting and finance. This article also analyses the results of a survey of students, liaison professors and leaders of the participating schools. The article aims to draw lessons from the pilot operation and to look into the future for improvements. Though the consortium regards doctoral courses in the PBFM specialization, the problem is a common one, generic to all area specializations of PhD programs in research universities. We hope the consortium can be a model for collaboration between universities going forward.

A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is defined as the highest achievable degree and represents the completion of a specialized mentored project. Concerningly, graduate programs are structured in ways that can lead to inequities that exclude graduate students based on race, class, gender, ability, and additional intersecting social locations. Drawing from Yuval-Davis' framework on the politics of belonging and Porter et al.'s institutional critique methodology, the goal of the qualitative study was to examine how a chemistry graduate program fosters the professional development of its students through the graduate student milestones (admissions, preliminary exams, coursework, candidacy exam, seminar, and dissertation defense). The data comprised of documents such as the 2019 graduate student handbook and information from the departmental website, along with interviews involving faculty (N = 5), staff (N = 3), and administrators (N = 2) who served as policy agents. Findings highlight how misalignment within the admissions, preliminary exam, and candidacy milestones can create boundaries for belonging. In contrast, the seminar milestone had alignment that contributed to belonging while the coursework and dissertation defense milestones had ambiguous alignment that contributed to belonging. After gathering and analyzing the data, I collaborated with a team at the university's Department of Chemistry to revise the preliminary exam and candidacy exam milestones, aiming to enhance their inclusivity. Overall, this study offers implications for structuring chemistry graduate programs and STEM programs broadly.

The fact that Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC) also includes historical consciousness is known, but this dimension of ICC has so far been largely unexplored. This article aims to show that virtual cooperation between universities from two different countries can promote not only ICC but also critical historical thinking. Using qualitative research methods, data sets from two different German-American collaborations were examined with regard to this question. The participants were preservice teachers. It was found that a change of perspective was valuable for gains in both ICC and historical consciousness.

College Unbound is a degree-completion college working to ensure all adult learners are valued as scholar-practitioners and have access to a bachelor's degree. As College Unbound has developed over the past decade, they have tried to interrogate what education for the public good means. College Unbound advances the public good inside three integrated curricular structures that enrolled students pursue concurrently: local, in-person seminars; intensive online courses; and a robust "Learning in Public" program. College Unbound serves as a model for adaptation as an institutional ethic that can fuel continued development and iterative assessment in response to student needs, exemplifying a commitment to the public good that moves the focus on higher education from "how it is" to "how it could be."
