3. Experiences from the implementation of physical therapy via telehealth for individuals with Parkinson disease during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

To (1) determine the characteristics and participation rate of adults with Parkinson disease (PD) in physical therapy (PT) delivered via telehealth, (2) identify the outcome measures and interventions implemented, (3) determine the safety of and (4) patient and therapist satisfaction with PT via telehealth in a clinic specializing in the care of people with PD during the coronavirus pandemic. A retrospective analysis of PT services via telehealth was conducted. Participating patients completed a satisfaction survey. Physical therapists (PTs) who delivered this care were interviewed. Three coders conducted thematic analysis of interviews. Descriptive statistics described the participation rate, demographics, outcome measures, interventions, and safety. There was a 71.4% participation rate. Participants (n = 55) were white (96%), non-Hispanic (100%), older adult (mean = 69.5 years (8.3)) males (65.5%). Non-participants (n = 22) had similar demographics. Therapists selected patient-reported measures more often than performance-based measures. Therapeutic exercise was the most common intervention. All patients (80% response rate) reported satisfaction with their experience. PTs reported the home enhanced specificity of training but impeded evaluation. Therapists endorsed a hybrid model for future practice. Patients reported satisfaction with PT via telehealth during the pandemic. A hybrid model may support optimal delivery of PT. Physical therapy via telehealth for patients with Parkinson disease was acceptable to patients and physical therapists in our study. Physical therapy via telehealth was safe for people with Parkinson disease in our study, although availability and benefits may not be reaching all populations equitably. Both physical therapists and patients endorse a hybrid model of care (a combination of in-person and remote assessment and treatment) to profit from the strengths of in-person and virtual formats while minimizing barriers to access. 4. Numerical Activities of Daily Living in Adults with Neurofibromatosis Type 1

Abstract

Background: This study aimed to identify the mathematical domains affected in adults with neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1) and the impact of the numerical difficulties on the patients' activities of daily living. Methods: We assessed 28 adult patients with NF1 and 28 healthy control participants. All participants completed the standardised battery of numerical activities of daily living along with clinical batteries of cognitive (Mini-Mental State Examination) and daily functioning (instrumental activities of daily living). The group comparisons of the performance on numerical activities of daily living were carried out using t-test correcting for multiple comparisons. Results: The results showed that the NF1 group performed worse than controls in written subtractions, written multiplication, multiplication principles and digit comprehension (dot counting) tasks. Importantly, no significant differences in numerical ecological tasks were found between patients and controls, suggesting a possible use of compensatory strategies in daily living abilities in spite of calculation deficits. Conclusion: The findings indicate that NF1 affects calculation but not the basic comprehension or representation of numbers in adult patients. These data have important implications for designing cognitive interventions tailored to the cognitive profile of individuals with NF1.

10. Processing of semantic and grammatical gender in Spanish speakers with aphasia

Abstract

Published online: 30 May 2021., Background: Previous studies have argued that there are two types of linguistic gender: grammatical gender, which is arbitrarily assigned to nouns, and semantic gender, which depends on the gender of the referent. Aim: We explore the hypothesis that these two types of gender entail distinct cognitive processes by investigating the performance of people with aphasia at the level of sentence processing. Methods and Procedure: Nine people with aphasia (seven with fluent aphasia) and a control group of thirteen age-matched healthy participants took part in a constrained completion choice task. The participants had to complete sentences in a way that made the last word gender congruent. The subjects of the sentences had either Semantic gender (enfermera, nurse; indicating the gender of the referent), Grammatical gender (silla, chair), or Opaque-Grammatical gender (tomate, tomato). Results: People with aphasia performed more poorly in all gender conditions than healthy controls. They also were less accurate in both the Grammatical and Opaque-Grammatical conditions than in the Semantic gender condition. Conclusion: We propose that because semantic gender provides more salient information, it is processed faster than grammatical gender.

Background: In probable Alzheimer’s disease (AD), different memory systems, executive functioning, visuospatial recognition, and language are impaired. Regarding the latter, only a few studies have investigated morphosyntactic production thus far. Aims: This study, which is a follow-up on Fyndanis, V., Manouilidou, C., Koufou, E., Karampekios, S., and Tsapakis, E. M. (2013). Agrammatic patterns in Alzheimer's disease: Evidence from tense, agreement, and aspect. Aphasiology, 27, 178–200. doi:10.1080/02687038.2012.705814, investigates whether verb-related morphosyntactic production is (selectively) impaired in AD focusing on two highly inflected languages, Greek and Italian. The morphosyntactic phenomena explored are subject–verb Agreement, Tense/Time Reference, and Mood. Focusing on these phenomena allows us to investigate if recent hypotheses, originally developed in aphasia research, can also capture results related to AD. We tested the hypotheses discussed in Fyndanis, V., Manouilidou, C., Koufou, E., Karampekios, S., and Tsapakis, E. M. (2013). Methods & Procedures: Two sentence completion tasks testing the production of subject–verb Agreement, Tense/Time Reference, and Mood were administered to 16 Greek-speaking and 10 Italian-speaking individuals with mild-to-moderate AD, as well as to 16 Greek-speaking and 11 Italian-speaking neurologically intact individuals who were matched with the participants with AD on age and education. Mixed-effects models were fitted to the data. Outcomes & Results: At the group level, both the Greek and Italian participants with AD performed worse than the controls. Both AD groups revealed selective patterns of morphosyntactic production (Greek: Agreement/Mood > Time Reference; Italian: Agreement > Time Reference > Mood). Past Reference and Future Reference did not dissociate in either of the two AD groups. Nevertheless, in all four participants with AD who showed dissociations, Past Reference was more impaired than Future Reference. Conclusions: The results indicate that the production of verb-related morphosyntactic categories can be impaired in mild-to-moderate AD. The different patterns observed in the two languages are partly attributable to the different way these languages encode Mood. The group results (of both the Greek- and Italian-speaking participants with AD) do not lend support to the PADILIH, whereas only the results of the Italian AD group are fully consistent with the IFIH. However, the individual data are consistent with the PADILIH, and the IFIH is informed by the present data and modified accordingly so that it can capture cross-linguistic patterns of morphosyntactic impairment. © 2017 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.
