Abstract

This article is devoted to the analysis of the structural content of the concept, the main linguistic approaches to its study. The concept is closely related to the sphere of human activity and its life outlook. In this regard, the concept is formed under the influence of the cultural and social process in human society, which leads to the formation of polysemantic layers around the basic layer of the concept. Along with various graphical representations of the concept proposed by modern linguists, we propose to consider the concept structure in the form of a tree slice. It also arouses interest to study the concept structure from the point of view of the frame organization of the semantic field of a certain notion.

Abstract

Web archiving is the process of collecting portions of the Web to ensure that the information is preserved for future exploitation. However, despite the increasing number of web archives worldwide, the absence of efficient and meaningful exploration methods still remains a major hurdle in the way of turning them into a usable and useful information source. In this paper, we focus on this problem and propose an RDF/S model and a distributed framework for building semantic profiles ("layers") that describe semantic information about the contents of web archives. A semantic layer allows describing metadata information about the archived documents, annotating them with useful semantic information (like entities, concepts, and events), and publishing all these data on the Web as Linked Data. Such structured repositories offer advanced query and integration capabilities, and make web archives directly exploitable by other systems and tools. To demonstrate their query capabilities, we build and query semantic layers for three different types of web archives. An experimental evaluation showed that a semantic layer can answer information needs that existing keyword-based systems are not able to sufficiently satisfy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Since 2016 a smart museum of everyday life history has been developed within the History Museum of Petrozavodsk State University. This R&D project aims at solutions to the two important problems for creating a digital service-oriented environment for museum visitors and personnel: 1) offering personal recommendations on the museum collection with the use of semantic ranking methods and in context of the user and exhibition, 2) collaborative addition of information sources and their semantic annotation within the museum collection. Such solutions form the semantic layer of smart museum environment. This paper introduces our a) system design models for agent- based programming of museum information services, b) ranking models for semantic data mining in historical and cultural heritage domain. Our software implementation demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed models in respect to the user mobility, service personalization, and collaborative work opportunity.

Abstract

Background: The purpose of the study was to analyze naming errors in patients with Alz­heimer’s disease in comparison to healthy subjects and determine the underlying cause of naming errors in these patients. Method: In this study, we included 35 healthy elderly subjects, 23 patients with mild Alzheimer’s disease, and 23 with moderate Alzheimer’s disease. Forty-five images were used to determine the type of naming errors, and to identify the underlying cause of errors, matching an image with a written word was used. Results: Patients with Alz­heimer’s disease had more naming errors compared with the group of healthy elderly, and patients with moderate Alzheimer’s disease showed a slower reaction in matching an image with a written word. Conclusion: Anomia in the initial phase of Alzheimer’s disease is due to problems in lexical retrieval; however, as the disease advances, in addition to lexical retrieval problems, conceptual knowledge causes naming problems.

Abstract

Nowadays many museums are being transformed to some “smart” variants: a cultural space in a digitally-equipped environment is formed where cultural heritage knowledge can be easily and collaboratively usable and creatable by interested visitors as well as by professionals. By using such innovative technologies as Internet of Things (IoT) and Smart Spaces it is possible to shorten the distance between museum exhibits and collected historical information on one side and consumers and providers of this information on the other side. In this paper, we study the smart museum concept for development of software that realizes connection between the involved actors and shared cultural heritage knowledge. Our research and development are focused on designing a semantic layer in the form of a software infrastructure. This infrastructure is a middleware on top of which such advanced museum information services can be constructed as personal visit planning, virtual exhibition preparation, and collaborative enrichment the museum collection. We introduce a suit of smart space-based solutions to create this type of software infrastructures. The generic solutions are theoretically analyzed based on the case study of the History Museum of Petrozavodsk State University (PetrSU).

Abstract

Introduction. Research on the ethno-cultural characteristics of the image of the world in the indigenous small-numbered peoples of the North is important. This paper presents the results of an empirical investigation of the image of the world (a semantic layer) among young representatives of the indigenous small-numbered peoples of the North. This study is the first report on the application of a three-level model of the image of the world for describing its characteristics among young representatives of indigenous ethnic groups. Methods. The study sample comprised 225 individual participants aged 16–25 years, living in the North and Northeast of Russia, 110 of whom were representatives of the indigenous small-numbered peoples of the North and 115 of whom were representatives of the non-indigenous population. The study employed the group associative experiment. Results and Discussion. The findings indicate the presence of non-random differences in the structures of semantic assessments, which indicates the presence of specific characteristics of the semantic layer of the image of the world among representatives of indigenous peoples of the North. Este trabalho pretende discutir que os cronônimos - a denominação das divisões do tempo - têm sido apenas descritivos ou designativos, pois o tempo ainda está longe de ser entendido. Dessa forma, este estudo de Crononímia detém-se no exame dos nomes de fenômenos temporais, e tem como meta, descortinar a motivação inicial de determinado cronônimo bem como o momento e as circunstâncias em que se rompeu sua camada semântica primeva, redirecionando uma nova fluição de sentido para novas ramificações de significados, isto é, o esvaziamento semântico. Supõe-se que a crononímia, ou forma de nomear o tempo, empregada pelas civilizações, revela motivações cinético-astrais, espaço-ambientais, religiosas e, ou metafóricas. Dessa forma, então, os cronônimos envelopariam descrições desses fenômenos sob a ótica dos paradigmas de cada época, que ao serem descortinados, resgatam a referência científica e antropológica basilar da identidade do tempo eclipsada pelo contínuo esvaziamento semântico. Busca-se âncora teórica em autores como Bakhtin (1990), Dick (1990), Dick (1998), Piettre (1997), entre outros, e analisam-se etimologia e fluição histórico-semântica para os termos de tempo como segundo, minuto, hora, dia, semana, mês, ano, século, Era e suas subdivisões crononímicas, com o propósito de identificar as motivações do nomeador.

Abstract

The article presents the results of a study of markers of non-verbal communication in the publicistic discourse of Ellen Barry, a journalist of “The New York Times”. Despite the increased attention of specialists, the analysis of scientifi c works indicated the problems of defi ning the concepts of publicistic discourse, gender and non-verbal communication. At the same time, it is indicated that publicistic discourse is one of the most important types of discourse for study, which is due to the focus on the constant transfer of information about world events and the life of modern people. In turn, it is assumed that the gender characteristics of journalists infl uence the choice of means of describing various facts in publicistic discourse. The importance and relevance of studying the non-verbal form of communication that contributes to the disclosure of a deeper semantic layer was recognized. In view of the relevance of studying these phenomena, a more diffi cult task is to determine the manifestation of the gender component in verbalized markers of non-verbal communication in publicistic discourse. For this purpose, the methodological tools of the cognitive-hermeneutic analysis were used. As a result of using this method, we analyzed the use of chronemes, proxemes, sensemes, kinemes and takemes as markers of non¬verbal communication based on the journalist's articles. The quantitative method helped to determine the frequency of the considered nominees. The article concludes that the most frequent markers of non-verbal communication found in the articles of journalist Ellen Barry are proxemes and chronomes. Kinemes and sensemes are used with an average frequency in the publicistic discourse. Takemes are defi ned as low-frequency markers of non-verbal communication in articles by Ellen Barry.

Abstract

In modern Smart City ecosystems, the wave of Big data has offered the potential for cities to obtain actionable insights from a large amount of data, collected from heterogeneous sources. To cope with data variety and to support querying facilities and navigation, domain experts, who possess the knowledge required to understand data sources structure and content, resort to the definition of metadata layers, for reconciling terminological differences and resolving ambiguity of data sources attributes. To this aim, the adoption of Semantic Web technologies assures a unified view of heterogeneous data sources and improves data access, leveraging open standards for knowledge representation. In this paper, we propose an approach to create a semantic data layer over Smart City data sources. The approach is grounded on two main pillars: (i) a procedure, to build and manage the semantic layer; (ii) a tool, implementing the steps of the procedure, devoted to support domain experts. Results of an experimentation conducted on representative Smart City data sources demonstrated the effectiveness of the approach. In particular, the presence in our approach of a preliminary step regarding lexical enrichment of data source attributes helped increasing the retrieval of useful concepts from domain ontologies for attribute annotation. In addition, allowing domain experts to provide additional ontological knowledge by specialising or creating new concepts and semantic relationships fostered flexibility in the annotation procedure, facilitating the evolution of the semantic layer. Finally, the developed semi-automatic tool helped domain experts in the semantic annotation process by also providing validation support.

Abstract

Knowledge graphs as fundamental pillar of artificial intelligence are experiencing a strong demand. In contrast to machine learning and deep learning, knowledge graphs do not require large amounts of (training) data and offer a bigger potential for a multitude of domains and problems. This article shows the application of knowledge graphs for the semantic description and management of data in a data lake, which improves the findability and reusability of data, and enables the automatic processing by algorithms. Since knowledge graphs contain both the data as well as its semantically described schema (ontology), they enable novel ontology-driven software architectures, in which the domain knowledge and business logic can completely reside on the knowledge graph level. This article further introduces such a use case: an ontology-driven frontend implementation, which is able to fully adapt itself based on the underlying knowledge graph schema and dynamically render information in the desired manner.

On the basis of source research on one of the most important, still undiscovered composers of French music modernism – Charles Tournemire, the author describes the Franciscan topos in his work. In the general perspective of the fascination with the figure of the Saint from Assisi, intensified especially in the art and music of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, Tournemire’s Franciscanism appears as one of the main inspirations in the art and worldview of the author of L’orgue mystique and his great successor – Olivier Messiaen. The article is a part of a research project analyzing the relationship between ideological inspirations, the semantic layer and aesthetics of Tournemire’s works, as a contribution to first monograph of his music.

Abstract: Improvement of the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) product model management process is a long-term objective for the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) and the Facility Management (FM) field. Ontology centred environments may become the infrastructure for managing the IFC product models. The ontologies form the core of the semantic layer that holds all of the knowledge of various business functions. The goal of this study is to show that management of complex product models may be improved by using time-related metadata. We achieved this goal by designing and implementing a semantic provenance data management system. One part of the system is a provenance grid service, and the system is accessible through a web portal. We show that the provenance service, and in particular the supported provenance data extraction and saving mechanisms, may be used to improve the management of complex product models without significant processing time delays. Abstract

Practices that originate outside the traditional constraints of planning can be sources of planning innovation. This paper researches how temporary use shifted from an element of alternative lifestyles to a strategically embedded procedure of planning in Germany. The paper reconstructs this long-term process of collective reinterpretation by focusing on a semantic layer of innovation discourses, a pragmatic layer of actions and practices as well as the institutional setting as the innovation’s grammar. Based on results of quantitative and qualitative document analyses and semi-structured interviews, it separates the innovation process into five interlinked phases and shows how novel practices initially gained relevance within a few places with extraordinary conditions. Promoted by a new generation of urbanists and diverse framing discourses, temporary use became mobile and succeeded in having a significant influence on planning in Germany.
