A silicon microstrip detector (SSD) system for use in very high rate experiments has been designed [1,2,3,4,5,6] for Experiment E771[7] at Fermi National Accelerator laboratory. The detector electronics were designed from the ground up using ASIC chip sets where commercial circuits where not suitable. The electronics for the SSD were designed to operate with interaction rates up to [10.sup.7] interaction/sec (beam rates of 2 x [10.sup.8] proton/sec). In addition to speed, the detector for the current run is very compact with 10000 channels of active detector in a volume of 5cm x 5cm x 10cm. The system will be expanded to 16000 channels in the next Fermilab fixed target run. The strip pitch ranges from 25 [mu]m in the center of the detector near the target to 100 [mu]m pitch at the most downstream, outer edge of the detector. The readout is a latch design with efficiencies of 95% even in the presence of radiation damage and high leakage currents. The detector and associated amplifier electronics has presently been operated at 20 [degrees] C and is designed to operate at 80 [degrees] C.

A trigger system was developed to measure production and decay of beauty hadrons from 800 GeV proton-nucleus interactions. The system utilizes two-dimensional pad chamber signals to detect straight line trajectories downstream of a single analyzing magnet. There is relatively little magnet deviation in high P(sub T) muons which gives the trigger a processing time of 150 nanoseconds.

High Energy Physics::Experiment - Abstract
The rationale for pursuing beauty physics at the SSC in a fixed target configuration is described. The increased beauty production cross section at the SSC, combined with high interaction rate capability of the proposed detector, results in 1010-11 produced BB events per year. The long decay length of the B hadrons (all equal to10 cm) allows direct observation of B decays in the high resolution silicon microstrip vertex detector. To optimize the operation of the proposed beauty spectrometer and the SSC, parasitic extraction of attendant or artificially generated large amplitude protons using crystal channeling is proposed and explored. The large sample of fully reconstructed B events allows detailed studies various CP violating decays with requisite statistics to confront the standard model. The CP physics potentials of the proposed experiment is evaluated and compared with alternative approaches, such as asymmetric e+e- B Factories and specialized hadron colliders. © 1992.

- Abstract
In a 400 GeV/cfixed target experiment using a set of geometrical calorimeter triggers we have determined a cross section for pp collisions producing two high PTcoplanar clusters. This cross section was determined without using jet-finding algorithms or appealing to QCD Monte Carlo calculations. Corrections to the data were made by studying hardware triggers designed for that purpose or using experimental data from e+e−colliders. The magnitude of the experimental cross section and the PTslope both agree reasonably well with theoretical QCD predictions for parton-parton scattering that combine non-scaling behavior with fits to recent data from ep, μp, and vp experiments.
