Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a widely used food additive with conflicting evidence regarding its potential effects on human health, with proposed relevance for obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetS) or chronic kidney disease. As being able to accurately quantify the MSG dietary intake would help clarify the open issues, we constructed a predictive formula to estimate the daily intake of MSG in a rat model based on the urinary metabolic profile. Adult male Wistar rats were divided into groups receiving different daily amounts of MSG in drinking water (0.5, 1.5, and 3.0 g%), no MSG, and MSG withdrawal after 3.0% MSG treatment for 4 weeks. We then analyzed 24-hour urine samples for chemistries and metabolites using 1H NMR spectrometry and observed a strong correlation between urine pH, sodium, bicarbonate, alpha-ketoglutarate, citrate, fumarate, glutamate, methylamine, N-methyl-4-pyridone-3-carboxamide, succinate, and taurine and the daily MSG intake. Following the multiple linear regression analysis a simple formula model based on urinary Na+, citrate, and glutamate was most accurate and could be validated for estimating daily MSG intake. In conclusion, we propose that the daily MSG intake correlates with urinary metabolites in a rat model and that this new tool for monitoring the impact of MSG on health measures.

Meditation, represented by various forms such as mindfulness, loving-kindness, visualization, breath control and relaxation exercises, offers athletes a structured pathway to deepen self-awareness, enhance emotional regulation and foster empathy. In conclusion, meditation emerges not merely as a relaxation technique but as a transformative journey that empowers athletes to master their emotions, excel in sports, and enhance their overall well-being. This narrative literature review highlights the profound impact of meditation on athletes’ emotional intelligence, encouraging further exploration in this evolving intersection of sports and mindfulness. In the demanding world of sports, emotional intelligence (EI) is a critical factor for athletes’ success, encompassing self-regulation, empathy, communication and composure under pressure. Meditation, a transformative tool for deepening self-awareness, emotional regulation and mental resilience, has emerged as a promising avenue for cultivating EI in athletes. This narrative review synthesizes existing research and personal narratives to explore the interplay between meditation and EI in the context of sports. Evidence suggests that meditation can enhance EI through mindfulness, loving-kindness and visualization practices, promoting focus, stress management and emotional resilience. Integration of meditation into athletic training regimens offers athletes a competitive edge, sharpening their mental acuity and fostering supportive team dynamics. While the transformative potential of meditation for EI is substantiated by research, limitations such as the predominance of qualitative studies and case reports warrant further empirical investigations. Overall, this narrative review highlights the promising relationship between meditation, EI, and athletic performance, paving the way for future research and practical applications of mindfulness practices in the sports world.

Abstract Objectives to evaluate over a 48-month follow-up period the: 1) long-term effectiveness and safety; 2) drug retention rate (DRR); 3) impact of comorbidities and bDMARDs line on MDA and DAPSA remission/low disease activity (LDA) of secukinumab in a multicenter Italian cohort of PsA patients. Methods Consecutive PsA patients receiving secukinumab were followed prospectively in Italian centers between 2016 and 2023. Disease characteristics, previous/ongoing treatments, comorbidities and follow-up duration were recorded. Treatment response was evaluated at 6 and 12 months after initiation, and every year up to 48 months (T48). DRR was assessed according to clinical and demographic features, comorbidities and bDMARDs line. Adverse events (AE) were recorded. Results Six hundred eighty-five patients [42.5% male] were enrolled; 32.9% naïve received secukinumab; 74.2% had ≥ 1 comorbidity. Overall, secukinumab yielded improved outcomes at T48: naïve maintained lower disease activity vs. non-naïve [DAPSA 4.0 (1.4–8.1) vs. 6.0 (2.2–10.4);p = 0.04]; 76.9% naïve and 66.2% non-naïve achieved MDA; MDA no comorbidities vs. 1–3 comorbidities 78.8% vs. 73.3% (p 3 comorbidities 78.8% vs. 48.7% (p 3 comorbidities. La construction d’une sélection animale moderne, à la suite de la Loi sur l’élevage de 1966, s’est traduite par des configurations sociotechniques variées combinant innovations génétiques, formes organisationnelles de la sélection et valorisation des produits animaux. L’étude comparée présentée ici sur trois filières animales distinctes (bovins, volailles, porcs) explicite les liens entre le type biologique de l’animal, les modèles et outils qui permettent d’en améliorer la performance et les modes d’organisation de la sélection animale. L’analyse met ainsi en évidence les types de couplage qui ont pu historiquement se constituer entre les caractéristiques propres à chaque espèce, les processus de production des connaissances génétiques associés et les formes d’organisation collective dans chacune des filières concernées. Elle constitue ainsi un cas d’école des interactions mutuelles entre la nature des objets scientifiques ou techniques considérés (ici l’animal de rente) et le cadre cognitif et normatif de la production et de la diffusion des connaissances (ici en sélection génétique).

Abstract Introduction Atrial fibrillation (AF) represents the most common arrhythmia in the postoperative setting. We aimed to investigate the incidence of postoperative AF (POAF) and determine its predictors, with a specific focus on inflammation markers. Methods We performed a retrospective single tertiary center cohort study including consecutive adult patients who underwent a major surgical procedure between January 2016 and January 2020. Patients were divided into four subgroups according to the type of surgery. Results Among 53,387 included patients (79.4% male, age 64.5 ± 9.5 years), POAF occurred in 570 (1.1%) with a mean latency after surgery of 3.4 ± 2.6 days. Sudden deafness is a common cause of emergency consultation in otology. Usually, despite investigations, no etiology is known. Intracochlear hemorrhage is a rare cause of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) and may be associated with various labyrinthine disorders. In such cases, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the clef of the diagnosis. We report the case of a 70-year-old patient who was referred to our department for sudden hearing loss, tinnitus, and vertigo. Otoscopic and neurological examinations were normal, and pure-tone audiometry revealed left profound sensorineural hearing loss. Videonystagmography (VNG) revealed left vestibular deficit. MRI demonstrated a high signal intensity inside the cochlea on unenhanced T1-weighted images, and no other abnormalities were found; in particular, no enhancement after intravenous administration of gadolinium. No etiology was identified. Vertigo disappeared rapidly with corticosteroid treatment and hyperbaric oxygen therapy, but hearing did not improve. Intra-labyrinthine hemorrhage causing SSNHL is rare, and the hearing prognosis is poor.

The purpose of this pilot study is to understand the impact of Family Group Conferencing (FGC) on the collaboration among general education and special education teachers, teachers' attitudes toward family outreach and perceived outcomes of preschool students with and without disabilities enrolled in inclusive classrooms during distance learning. FGC is an evidence-based model that aims to increase family engagement in a child's academic growth by enhancing the quantity and quality of teacher-parent interaction. Six special education teachers and six general education preschool teachers from six inclusive preschool classrooms participated in the study. Teachers received training on how to work collaboratively to develop shared goals and support to parents during the COVID-19 global pandemic. This study positively impacted the relationships between the general education and special education teacher pairs at each school. Teachers reported improved outcomes for students with and without disabilities. Implications include using FGC to build co-teachers relationship and reimagining the traditional parent-teacher conference to involve parents.

Objective Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is associated with an increased risk of cancer. We aimed to assess the prevalence of cancer in our cohort and to explore possible associations with clinical, immunological and treatment characteristics.Methods Our retrospective monocentric cohort study of patients with SSc recorded prevalent and incident cases of malignancy, including those diagnosed within 3 years of the SSc onset (defined as cancer-associated scleroderma) and sought associations with the clinical characteristics and the serum autoantibody profiling performed using RNA and protein immunoprecipitation, Western-blot, immunoblot and ELISA at the time of SSc diagnosis, prior to any specific treatment.Results Among 290 patients with SSc, the overall prevalence of cancer was 20%, with 8% of cases being cancer-associated scleroderma. Both conditions were more frequent in elderly patients and in patients with positive anti-Ro52 or anti-U3-RNP. Cancer-associated scleroderma was significantly more prevalent among patients negative for both anti-centromere (ACA) and anti-topoisomerase-1 (TOPO1) antibodies, especially in the case of diffuse SSc. Immunosuppressants were not significantly associated with cancer. Patients triple negative for ACA, TOPO1 and anti-RNA polymerase III antibodies had a significantly higher risk of breast cancer.Conclusions Cancer surveillance should be particularly careful in patients with diffuse SSc, increased age at disease onset and without classical SSc-related autoantibodies.

Significance: The CuO, Al2O3, and TiO2 nanoparticles find extensive applications in advanced chemical reaction-based thermal transport and quadratic convective nanofluids due to their exceptional thermal properties and chemical stability. Increased thermal conductivity of these nanoparticles used to enhance heat transfer in various chemical reactors, resistance to chemical degradation and photocatalytic reactors and solar energy applications. Motive: This study brings the investigation about quadratic convection-based thermal transport to infinite shear rate for magnetized ternary radiative cross nanofluid with homogeneous-heterogeneous chemical reactions. Water is taken as base fluid and three nanoparticles are Copper oxide (CuO), aluminium oxide (Al2O3), and titanium dioxide (TiO2). Heat transport analysis is made through quadratic convection, magnetic field and thermal radiation. Concentration of nanofluid is scrutinized though homogeneous-heterogeneous chemical reactions. Method: ology: Physical problem with assumptions generates the system of partial differential equations (PDEs) and these PDEs are transformed into ordinary differential equations (ODEs) through similarity variables. Furthermore, a unique combination of Bvp4c and Levenberg Marquardt neural network (LM-NN) schemes is utilized to fetch the numerical solutions. Bvp4c is utilized to solve the governing equations, while LM-NN serves to enhance predictive capabilities and capture intricate nonlinear relationships. Findings: Magnetic environment, chemical process, radiations effects and volumetric fraction of nanoparticles make better heat transfer efficiency and control.
