Abstract

Microalgae attract scientific interest due to their high potential as ecofriendly biostimulants, biofertilizers and bioprotectants against biotic and abiotic stresses. Literature reports reveal the positive effects of microalgae application to crop systems in improving plant nutrient uptake and tolerance to stress However, high variability of their effects on plants, depending on the method of formulation preparation, genetic variability of species and cultivars, crop phenological phase when they are applied, dose of application, and strain used. The outcomes of the present review demonstrated the high benefits of microalgae application to improve plant tollerence to oxidantive stress, yield and nutritional quality of the product. To optimise the beneficial effect of microalgae in crop production, further research is necessary aimed to reveal molecular and physiological aspects of their utilization.

Abstract

While in the atmosphere nitrogen is abundant, this element plays a limited role as nutrient for plants. Cereal crops, as an example, are uncapable to directly use freely available nitrogen gas. As a consequence, their optimal growing and, in general, the productivity of such crops relies mainly on the use of chemical fertilizers, which, under the European Green Deal and the Farm to Fork Strategy are under scrutiny with plans of reduction of their use. As increasing crop production is a vital target for agriculture and food systems, the role of nitrogen fixers could play a fundamental role to match the targets of increasing the food production by decreasing the use of chemical fertilizers. Also, such approach is very appropriate from the perspective of sustainable production and conservative agriculture. The present work has the objective to examine the role of nitrogen fixers on the maize yield, respectively the productivity in harvested maize crop treated with Azotobacter chrococcum, Azotobacter vinelandii and Bacillus megaterium, three different nitrogen-fixing bacteria. The investigations were based on field tests. Thus, there at the beginning the seeds were inoculated before seeding; and during the vegetation the crops were treated with the three bacteria species. The fields experiment was organized in four variants (one non-treated variant and three with the bacteria Azotobacter chrococcum, Azotobacter vinelandii and Bacillus megaterium) and three replicates. The examination of collected samples revealed a general increase in productivity in the variants treated with Azotobacter vinelandii. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The onion sweet bulb genotypes grown in the Crimean republic (Russia) have a high nutritional value, but are still poorly characterized so far. Research was carried out in order to assess quality, antioxidant and mineral composition features of 9 Crimean genotypes in comparison with the Italian sweet variety ‘Tropea’. ‘Yaltinsky 6А’ showed the highest yield. Beam Promine attained the highest values of bulb dry residue, soluble solids and total sugars, but the lowest monosaccharides content. The Crimean genotypes showed higher levels of ascorbic acid and total acidity than ‘Tropea’, but lower concentrations of Fe, Cu, Mn and Zn. The Crimean genotypes examined showed interesting yield and quality performances, and also the potentiality to valorizing the bulb peel for extracting health–beneficial compounds such as antioxidants.

Abstract

Conventional management of sweet pepper is based on farming practices characterized by the use of chemicals with harmful environmental impact. In order to investigate innovative production, research was carried out in order to assess the effects of two pepper cultivars (‘Brillant’ and ‘Yolo Wonder’) in combination with four farming systems (Conventional control-C; Conventional with microorganism-enriched fertilization-CMF; Organic control-O; Organic with microorganismenriched fertilization-OMF) on plant physiological parameters, yield and fruit quality. Conventionally grown plants showed higher values of assimilatory pigments and of photosynthetic rate compared to the Organically ones. The CMF resulted in the highest early and total yield, followed by the OMF, due to higher fruit number. Higher values of carotenoids, ascorbic acid and α-tocopherol were recorded in ‘Yolo Wonder’ red fruits compared to ‘Brillant’ yellow berries. The highest total polyphenols concentration was recorded under the CMF, whereas OMF resulted in the highest flavonoids concentration and antioxidant activity.

Abstract

Soil provides ecosystem services, supports human health and habitation, stores carbon and regulates emissions of greenhouse gases. Unprecedented pressures on soil from degradation and urbanization are threatening agro-ecological balances and food security. It is important that we learn more about soil to sustainably manage and preserve it for future generations. To this end, we developed and analyzed a global soil visible-near infrared (vis-NIR) spectral library. It is currently the largest and most diverse database of its kind. We show that the information encoded in the spectra can describe soil composition and be associated to land cover and its global geographic distribution, which acts as a surrogate for global climate variability. We also show the usefulness of the global spectra for predicting soil attributes such as soil organic and inorganic carbon, clay, silt, sand and iron contents, cation exchange capacity, and pH. Using wavelets to treat the spectra, which were recorded in different laboratories using different spectrometers and methods, helped to improve the spectroscopic modelling. We found that modelling a diverse set of spectra with a machine learning algorithm can find the local relationships in the data to produce accurate predictions of soil properties. The spectroscopic models that we derived are parsimonious and robust, and using them we derived a harmonized global soil attribute dataset, which might serve to facilitate research on soil at the global scale. This spectroscopic approach should help to deal with the shortage of data on soil to better understand it and to meet the growing demand for information to assess and monitor soil at scales ranging from regional to global. New contributions to the library are encouraged so that this work and our collaboration might progress to develop a dynamic and easily updatable database with better global coverage. Abstract

A better understanding of soil organic C (SOC) distribution in mountain soils is important for quantifying C emissions-removals involved in land use change processes, such as afforestation, reforestation, and deforestation activities. The highest part of Valchiavenna, a Northern Italy alpine area, is characterized by a great variety of landscapes owing to the different parent material, climatic conditions, topography, vegetation, and geomorphology. The interaction of these features has produced many soil types, such as Leptosols, Regosols, Cambisols, Umbrisols, Podzols, and Histosols, with large differences in total organic C (TOC) content. To predict TOC content, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) in the visible and near-infrared (VIS-NIR) range was applied. Nine soil profiles were sampled to represent a range of pedologic profiles and were analyzed with DRS in the wavelength interval of 350 to 2500 nm and for some chemical and physical parameters. Spectral data were transformed and then analyzed through partial least square regression (PLSR) and multiple linear regression. Soil parameters were also considered as covariates. The results indicate that the DRS technique linked with PLSR and applied to smoothed spectra was able to predict TOC and highlight the relationships between TOC and Al and Fe amorphous minerals. The wavelength in the visible range, with particular regard to the 520- to 560-nm interval, were the most influential in explaining TOC variation compared with NIR (700-1400 nm) and short-wave infrared (SWIR) bands (1400-2500 nm). This may suggest that changes in reflectance in the visible range can be caused by a significant variation in TOC in the alpine soil profiles. This calls for a closer examination of pedologic processes in mountain environments owing to advanced chemometric models to predict SOC content in mountain soils. © Soil Science Society of America.

Abstract

Background: The size of the transcatheter heart valves (THV) is overestimated up to 20% based on aortic annulus diameter measured using computed tomography (CT). However, the prosthesis may not be fully expanded during implantation. THV underexpansion might have detrimental clinical consequences. Purpose The aim of this study was to define the degree of underexpansion degree of different THVs after implantation, introduced as the shrinking index. Methods: In total we enrolled 114 patients (68 men, 79 ± 8 years old) who underwent transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) with the self-expanding CoreValve (n=28 patients), mechanically expanded Lotus valve (n= 37) or balloon expandable Edwards SAPIEN XT (n=18) and Edwards SAPIEN 3 (n= 31). The cover index of the THV was calculated as the percentage difference of the nominal prosthesis size and annulus diameter measured using CT. Intraprocedural transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) was performed to determine the size of the THV inflow after implantation. The shrinking index was calculated as the percentage of the difference between the inflow size by TEE and the nominal prosthesis size divided by prosthesis size. Results: Cover index per CT assessment before TAVI was 18 ± 7% for CoreValve, 2 ± 4% for Lotus, 9 ± 5% for Edwards SAPIEN and 4 ± 5% for Edwards SAPIEN 3 (ANOVA p < 0.001, Corevalve was significantly larger than the others). Compared with aortic annulus diameter measured using TEE in long axis view, the overestimation increased to 28 ± 9% for CoreValve, 12 ± 8% for Lotus, 18 ± 12% for Edwards SAPIEN and 12 ± 8% for Edwards SAPIEN 3 (ANOVA p < 0.001, Corevalve was significantly larger than the others). Conversely, the shrinking index after TAVI was -31 ± 6% for CoreValve, -20 ± 5% for Lotus, -22 ± 6% for SAPIEN XT and -19 ± 5% for SAPIEN 3 (ANOVA p < 0.001, Corevalve was significantly larger than the others). The interobserver variability (relative difference) of TEE in measuring the aortic annulus and prosthesis inflow was 6 ± 5% and 7 ± 5% respectively. Conclusion: The shrinking index determines the degree of THV underexpansion after TAVI and can be reliably measured with TEE. The self-expanding CoreValve tended to be under-expanded the most, indicated by the largest shrinking index, while the under-expansion degree was comparable between Lotus valve, SAPIEN XT and SAPIEN 3. The clinical implications of the shrinking index requires further study.

Abstract

Purpose: 3D echocardiography (3DE) enables fast 3D acquisition but subsequent manual navigation to find 2D diagnostic planes can be time consuming. We have developed and validated an automated machine learning-based technique to find apical 2-, 3- and 4-chamber (A2C, A3C, A4C) views that enables fast volume navigation and analysis. Methods: 3DE volumes were acquired (Philips iE33: X3-1 and X5-1 probes) from 30 healthy volunteers and 36 clinical patients with suspected valve disease and coronary heart disease. 66 end diastolic volumes were used to assess the accuracy of apical standard view finding by our method against manual plane finding. To do this, dedicated software was developed with a machine learning approach and a 3-fold cross validation of results was performed. Results: Automatic A4C view detection was possible in 60/66 (91%) of volumes; detection failures were due to suboptimal myocardium wall integrity or lack of right ventricle in the scan. A2C and A3C views were extracted from the A4C view using the known geometrical relationships between apical standard views (A2C to A3C: 30°~40° and A2C to A4C: 90° of rotation over the left ventricle long axis, as shown in the Figure). In average, our method accurately found the heart apex and mitral valve centre with a 7.1 ± 5.7 mm and 7.2 ± 5.3 mm error, respectively. Conclusions: In order to automate clinical workflow, we have developed a new and fully automatic machine learning strategy for apical standard view finding which performed well (91% detection accuracy) on volunteer and clinical 3D echocardiograms. Abstract

Purpose: Patients with rheumatic mitral stenosis (MS) are at increased risk of thromboembolic consequences. Owing to the higher risk of these complications, anticoagulant therapy is mandatory in MS associated with atrial fibrillation (AF). However, time to begin prophylactic anticoagulant therapy in normal sinus rhythm (NSR) is not yet clear. Left atrial (LA) enlargement has been proposed as potential surrogate for thrombus formation and subsequent embolization. We examined various LA echocardiographic parameters to detect possible predictors of embolization in MS and NSR. Methods: Our study included 79 patients with rheumatic MS in NSR. Case group (n=36) included patients with history of prior embolic events; while control group (n=43) included patients without history of embolization. All the studied population underwent history taking, clinical examination and ECG to rule out AF and confirm manifestations of embolization in the case group. Patients with CVS underwent bilateral carotid duplex to rule out Carotid artery stenosis. Other causes of embolization were excluded. Routine transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE) was done and LA volumes (LAV) were measured using both area-length (A-L) and prolate-ellipsoid methods. LAV maximum (end systolic; Vmax), LAV minimum (end diastolic;Vmin) and LAV at onset of atrial systole (end of P wave on surface ECG;Vp) were measured by the two methods. The LA phasic indices were calculated given the aforementioned LAVs as follows: Passive emptying volume (PEV)= Vmax-Vp, Passive emptying fraction (PEF) = PEV/Vmax, Active emptying volume (AEV)= Vp-Vmin, Active emptying fraction (AEF) = AEV/Vp and Total emptying volumes (TEV) = PEV + AEV. Comparison between case and control groups was done using two-tailed unpaired student t test for continuous variables and the Pearson's chi-square test for categorical variables. Correlations between normally distributed variables were done using Pearson correlation coefficient. p value < 0.05 was considered significant for all tests. Results: Female gender predominated the studied group (83.7%). The mean age of our population was 32.6 ± 6.7.Both groups were age and gender matched. All patients were neither diabetic nor hypertensive. Both groups had comparable degree of mitral stenosis. There was no statistical difference in LAV between both groups. However, PEF using Prolate-ellipsoid method was significantly lower in the case group (p=0.017). Conclusion: LA phasic indices may be better indicator of LA dysfunction than conventional LAV. LA PEF may be a predictor of thrombus formation and subsequent embolization in rheumatic MS and NSR.

Abstract

Our aim was to identify subclinical right ventricular (RV) alterations in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) by combining standard and three-dimensional echocardiography (3DE). Fifty SLE patients without concomitant cardiac disease and 50 healthy controls, matched for age and gender, were enrolled. Disease damage was evaluated by inflammatory markers and SLE damage index. All patients underwent an echo-Doppler examination with 3DE assessment of RV function, RV septal and lateral longitudinal strain. The two groups had comparable body mass index and blood pressure. RV transversal middle diameter and pulmonary arterial pressure were significantly higher in SLE compared to controls. Abstract

A better understanding of soil organic C (SOC) distribution in mountain soils is important for quantifying C emissions-removals involved in land use change processes, such as afforestation, reforestation, and deforestation activities. The highest part of Valchiavenna, a Northern Italy alpine area, is characterized by a great variety of landscapes owing to the different parent material, climatic conditions, topography, vegetation, and geomorphology. The interaction of these features has produced many soil types, such as Leptosols, Regosols, Cambisols, Umbrisols, Podzols, and Histosols, with large differences in total organic C (TOC) content. To predict TOC content, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) in the visible and near-infrared (VIS-NIR) range was applied. Nine soil profiles were sampled to represent a range of pedologic profiles and were analyzed with DRS in the wavelength interval of 350 to 2500 nm and for some chemical and physical parameters. Spectral data were transformed and then analyzed through partial least square regression (PLSR) and multiple linear regression. Soil parameters were also considered as covariates. The results indicate that the DRS technique linked with PLSR and applied to smoothed spectra was able to predict TOC and highlight the relationships between TOC and Al and Fe amorphous minerals. The wavelength in the visible range, with particular regard to the 520- to 560-nm interval, were the most influential in explaining TOC variation compared with NIR (700-1400 nm) and short-wave infrared (SWIR) bands (1400-2500 nm). This may suggest that changes in reflectance in the visible range can be caused by a significant variation in TOC in the alpine soil profiles. This calls for a closer examination of pedologic processes in mountain environments owing to advanced chemometric models to predict SOC content in mountain soils. © Soil Science Society of America.

Abstract

With the aim of assessing the effects of beneficial microorganisms on greenhouse tomato &ldquo, plum&rdquo, grown under salinity conditions, research was carried out in southern Italy from summer to winter, by comparing two arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) based formulates (Rizotech Plus, Myco Apply DR) and a non-inoculated control, in factorial combination with four soil electrical conductivities (1.5, 3.0, 4.5, 6.0 mS&middot, cm&minus, 1 EC). The highest root colonization was 83% at 3.0 mS&middot, 1 under AMF-based treatments and 34% at 1.5 mS&middot, 1 in non-treated control, the latter attained lower values than AMF treatments at any soil EC. Harvest occurred 3.5 days earlier in control plants, six days earlier under 6.0 mS&middot, 1 EC compared to 1.5 mS&middot, 1. The inoculated plants always showed higher yield than the control ones and the highest production at 4.5 mS&middot, 1 EC, control plants attained the highest yield under 3.0&ndash, 4.5 mS&middot, 1 EC. The highest values of most fruit quality indicators, mineral elements and antioxidant compounds and activity were recorded under AMF-based formulates inoculation and 6.0 mS&middot, 1 soil EC. Beneficial microorganisms proved to be an effective environmentally friendly tool for improving tomato yield and quality performances in both normal and soil salinity conditions.

Abstract

Background: Ultrasound exam as a screening test for abdominal aorta (AA) can visualize the aorta in 99% of patients and has a sensitivity and specificity approaching 100% in screening settings for aortic aneurysm. Pocket Size Imaging Device (PSID) has a potential value as a screening tool, because of its possible use in several clinical settings. Our aim was to assess the impact of demographics and cardiovascular (CV) risk factors on AA size by using PSID in an outpatient screening., Methods: Consecutive patients, referring for a CV assessment in a 6 months period, were screened. AA was visualized by subcostal view in longitudinal and transverse plans in order to determine the greatest anterior-posterior diameter. After excluding 5 patients with AA aneurysm, 508 outpatients were enrolled. All patients underwent a sequential assessment including clinical history with collection of CV risk factors, physical examination, PSID exam and standard Doppler echoc exam using a 2.5 transducer with harmonic capability, both by expert ultrasound operators, during the same morning. Standard echocardiography operators were blinded on PSID exam and viceversa., Results: Diagnostic accuracy of AA size by PSID was tested successfully with standard echo machine in a subgroup (n = 102) (rho = 0.966, p < 0.0001). AA diameter was larger in men than in women and in ≥50 -years old subjects than in those <50 -years old (both p < 0.0001). AA was larger in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) (p < 0.0001). By a multivariate model, male sex (p < 0.0001), age and body mass index (both p < 0.0001), CAD (p < 0.01) and heart rate (p = 0.018) were independent predictors of AA size (cumulative R 2  = 0.184, p < 0.0001)., Conclusion: PSID is a reliable tool for the screening of determinants of AA size. AA diameter is greater in men and strongly influenced by aging and overweight. CAD may be also associated to increased AA diameter.

Abstract

Although often referred to as "the forgotten chamber", compared with left ventricle (LV), especially in the past years, the left atrium (LA) plays a critical role in the clinical expression and prognosis of patients with heart and cerebrovascular disease, as demonstrated by several studies. Echocardiographers initially focused on early detection of atrial geometrical abnormalities through monodimensional atrial diameter quantification and then bidimensional (2D) areas and volume estimation. Now, together with conventional echocardiographic parameters, new echocardiographic techniques, such as strain Doppler, 2D speckle tracking and three-dimensional (3D) echocardiography, allow assessing early LA dysfunction and they all play a fundamental role to detect early functional remodelling before anatomical alterations occur. LA dysfunction and its important prognostic implications may be detected sooner by LA strain than by volumetric measurements.
