Abstract

Emergence of universal collective behaviour from interactions in a sufficiently large group of elementary constituents is a fundamental scientific paradigm. In physics, correlations in fluctuating microscopic observables can provide key information about collective states of matter such as deconfined quark-gluon plasma in heavy-ion collisions or expanding quantum degenerate gases. Two-particle correlations in mesoscopic colliders have provided smoking-gun evidence on the nature of exotic electronic excitations such as fractional charges, levitons and anyon statistics. Yet the gap between two-particle collisions and the emergence of collectivity as the number of interacting particles grows is hard to address at the microscopic level. Here, we demonstrate all-body correlations in the partitioning of up to $N = 5$ electron droplets driven by a moving potential well through a Y-junction in a semiconductor. We show that the measured multivariate cumulants (of order $k = 2$ to $N$) of the electron droplet are accurately described by $k$-spin correlation functions of an effective Ising model below the N\'eel temperature and can be interpreted as a Coulomb liquid in the thermodynamic limit. Finite size scaling of high-order correlation functions provides otherwise inaccessible fingerprints of emerging order. Our demonstration of emergence in a simple correlated electron collider opens a new way to study engineered states of matter.

Abstract

Electronic flying qubits offer an interesting alternative to photonic qubits: electrons propagate slower, hence easier to control in real time, and Coulomb interaction enables direct entanglement between different qubits. While their coherence time is limited, picosecond-scale control would make them competitive in terms of number of possible coherent operations. The key challenge lies in achieving the dynamical regime, where the injected plasmonic pulse width is shorter than the quantum device dimensions. Here we reach this new regime in a quantum nanoelectronic system by injecting ultrashort single electron plasmonic pulses into a 14-micrometer-long Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Our findings reveal that quantum coherence is preserved for ultrashort plasmonic pulses, exhibiting enhanced contrast of coherent oscillations compared to the DC regime. Moreover, this coherence remains robust even under large bias voltages. This milestone demonstrates the feasibility of flying qubits as a promising alternative to localized qubit architectures, offering reduced hardware footprint, increased connectivity, and potential for scalable quantum information processing.

3. Selective area epitaxy of in-plane HgTe nanostrcutures on CdTe(001) substrate

Abstract

Semiconductor nanowires are believed to play a crucial role for future applications in electronics, spintronics and quantum technologies. A potential candidate is HgTe but its sensitivity to nanofabrication processes restrain its development. A way to circumvent this obstacle is the selective area growth technique. Here, in-plane HgTe nanostructures are grown thanks to selective area molecular beam epitaxy on a semi-insulating CdTe substrate covered with a patterned SiO$_{\mathrm{2}}$ mask. The shape of these nanostructures is defined by the in-plane orientation of the mask aperture along the <$110$>, <$1\bar{\mathrm{1}}0$>, or <$100$> direction, the deposited thickness, and the growth temperature. Several micron long in-plane nanowires can be achieved as well as more complex nanostructures such as networks, diamond structures or rings. A good selectivity is achieved with very little parasitic growth on the mask even for a growth temperature as low as $140${\deg}C and growth rate up to $0.5$ ML/s. For <$110$> oriented nanowires, the center of the nanostructure exhibits a trapezoidal shape with {$111$}B facets and two grains on the sides, while <$1\bar{\mathrm{1}}0$> oriented nanowires show {$111$}A facets with adatoms accumulation on the sides of the top surface. Transmission electron microscopy observations reveal a continuous epitaxial relation between the CdTe substrate and the HgTe nanowire. Measurements of the resistance with fourpoint scanning tunneling microscopy indicates a good electrical homogeneity along the main NW axis and a thermally activated transport. This growth method paves the way toward the fabrication of complex HgTe-based nanostructures for electronic transport measurements., Comment: 18 pages and 8 figures. Submitted to Nanotechnology

4. WorkArena++: Towards Compositional Planning and Reasoning-based Common Knowledge Work Tasks

Abstract

The ability of large language models (LLMs) to mimic human-like intelligence has led to a surge in LLM-based autonomous agents. Though recent LLMs seem capable of planning and reasoning given user instructions, their effectiveness in applying these capabilities for autonomous task solving remains underexplored. This is especially true in enterprise settings, where automated agents hold the promise of a high impact. To fill this gap, we propose WorkArena++, a novel benchmark consisting of 682 tasks corresponding to realistic workflows routinely performed by knowledge workers. WorkArena++ is designed to evaluate the planning, problem-solving, logical/arithmetic reasoning, retrieval, and contextual understanding abilities of web agents. Our empirical studies across state-of-the-art LLMs and vision-language models (VLMs), as well as human workers, reveal several challenges for such models to serve as useful assistants in the workplace. In addition to the benchmark, we provide a mechanism to effortlessly generate thousands of ground-truth observation/action traces, which can be used for fine-tuning existing models. Overall, we expect this work to serve as a useful resource to help the community progress toward capable autonomous agents. 5. A general model for spin coating on a non-axisymmetric curved substrate

Abstract

We derive a generalised asymptotic model for the flow of a thin fluid film over an arbitrarily-parameterised non-axisymmetric curved substrate surface based on the lubrication approximation. In addition to surface tension, gravity, and centrifugal force, our model incorporates the effects of the Coriolis force and disjoining pressure, together with a non-uniform initial condition, which have not been widely considered in existing literature. We use this model to investigate the impact of the Coriolis force and fingering instability on the spreading of a non-axisymmetric spin-coated film at a range of substrate angular velocities, first on a flat substrate, and then on parabolic cylinder- and saddle-shaped curved substrates. We show that, on flat substrates, the Coriolis force has a negligible impact at low angular velocities, and at high angular velocities results in a small deflection of fingers formed at the contact line against the direction of substrate rotation. On curved substrates, we demonstrate that as the angular velocity is increased, spin coated films transition from being dominated by gravitational drainage with no fingering to spreading and fingering in the direction with the greatest component of centrifugal force tangent to the substrate surface. For both curved substrates and all angular velocities considered, we show that the film thickness and total wetted substrate area remain similar over time to those on a flat substrate, with the key difference being the shape of the spreading droplet., Comment: 25 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

The displacement of a single electron enables exciting avenues for nanotechnology with vast application potential in quantum metrology, quantum communication and quantum computation. Surface acoustic waves (SAW) have proven itself as a surprisingly useful solution to perform this task over large distance with outstanding precision and reliability. Over the last decade, important milestones have been achieved bringing SAW-driven single-electron transport from first proof-of-principle demonstrations to accurate, highly-controlled implementations, such as coherent spin transport, charge-to-photon conversion, or antibunching of charge states. Beyond the well-established piezoelectric gallium-arsenide platform, first realisations of acousto-electronic transport have also been carried out on the surface of liquid helium. In this review article, we aim to keep track of this remarkable progress by explaining these recent achievements from basic principles, with an outlook on follow-up experiments and near-term applications.

Abstract

Surface acoustic waves (SAWs) hold a vast potential in various fields such as spintronics, quantum acoustics, and electron-quantum optics, but an electromagnetic wave emanating from SAW generation circuits has often been a major hurdle. Here, we investigate a differential excitation method of interdigital transducers (IDTs) to generate SAWs while reducing the electromagnetic wave. The results show that electromagnetic waves are suppressed by more than 90% in all directions. This suppression overcomes the operating limits and improves the scalability of SAW systems. Our results promise to facilitate the development of SAW-based applications in a wide range of research fields.

Abstract

Pairing of electrons is ubiquitous in electronic systems featuring attractive inter-electron interactions, as exemplified in superconductors. Counter-intuitively, it can also be mediated in certain circumstances by the repulsive Coulomb interaction alone. Quantum Hall (QH) Fabry-P\'erot interferometers (FPIs) tailored in two-dimensional electron gas under a perpendicular magnetic field has been argued to exhibit such unusual electron pairing seemingly without attractive interaction. Here, we show evidence in graphene QH FPIs revealing not only a similar electron pairing at bulk filling factor nu=2 but also an unforeseen emergence of electron tripling characterized by a fractional Aharonov-Bohm flux period h/3e (h is the Planck constant and e the electron charge) at nu=3. Leveraging a novel plunger-gate spectroscopy, we demonstrate that electron pairing (tripling) involves correlated charge transport on two (three) entangled QH edge channels. This spectroscopy indicates a quantum interference flux-periodicity determined by the sum of the phases acquired by the distinct QH edge channels having slightly different interfering areas. While recent theory invokes the dynamical exchange of neutral magnetoplasmons -- dubbed neutralons -- as mediator for electron pairing, our discovery of three entangled QH edge channels with apparent electron tripling defies understanding and introduces a new three-body problem for interacting fermions.

Abstract

Surface acoustic waves (SAWs) are a reliable solution to transport single electrons with precision in piezoelectric semiconductor devices. Recently, highly efficient single-electron transport with a strongly compressed single-cycle acoustic pulse has been demonstrated. This approach, however, requires surface gates constituting the quantum dots, their wiring, and multiple gate movements to load and unload the electrons, which is very time-consuming. Here, on the contrary, we employ such a single-cycle acoustic pulse in a much simpler way - without any quantum dot at the entrance or exit of a transport channel - to perform single-electron transport between distant electron reservoirs. We observe the transport of a solitary electron in a single-cycle acoustic pulse via the appearance of the quantized acousto-electric current. The simplicity of our approach allows for on-demand electron emission with arbitrary delays on a ns time scale. We anticipate that enhanced synthesis of the SAWs will facilitate electron-quantum-optics experiments with multiple electron flying qubits.

19. Robust Sparsification for Matroid Intersection with Applications

Abstract

Matroid intersection is a classical optimization problem where, given two matroids over the same ground set, the goal is to find the largest common independent set. In this paper, we show that there exists a certain "sparsifer": a subset of elements, of size $O(|S^{opt}| \cdot 1/\varepsilon)$, where $S^{opt}$ denotes the optimal solution, that is guaranteed to contain a $3/2 + \varepsilon$ approximation, while guaranteeing certain robustness properties. We call such a small subset a Density Constrained Subset (DCS), which is inspired by the Edge-Degree Constrained Subgraph (EDCS) [Bernstein and Stein, 2015], originally designed for the maximum cardinality matching problem in a graph. Our proof is constructive and hinges on a greedy decomposition of matroids, which we call the density-based decomposition. We show that this sparsifier has certain robustness properties that can be used in one-way communication and random-order streaming models.

23. Parameterized Matroid-Constrained Maximum Coverage

Abstract

In this paper, we introduce the concept of Density-Balanced Subset in a matroid, in which independent sets can be sampled so as to guarantee that (i) each element has the same probability to be sampled, and (ii) those events are negatively correlated. These Density-Balanced Subsets are subsets in the ground set of a matroid in which the traditional notion of uniform random sampling can be extended. We then provide an application of this concept to the Matroid-Constrained Maximum Coverage problem. In this problem, given a matroid $\mathcal{M} = (V, \mathcal{I})$ of rank $k$ on a ground set $V$ and a coverage function $f$ on $V$, the goal is to find an independent set $S \in \mathcal{I}$ maximizing $f(S)$. This problem is an important special case of the much-studied submodular function maximization problem subject to a matroid constraint; this is also a generalization of the maximum $k$-cover problem in a graph. In this paper, assuming that the coverage function has a bounded frequency $\mu$ (i.e., any element of the underlying universe of the coverage function appears in at most $\mu$ sets), we design a procedure, parameterized by some integer $\rho$, to extract in polynomial time an approximate kernel of size $\rho \cdot k$ that is guaranteed to contain a $1 - (\mu - 1)/\rho$ approximation of the optimal solution. This procedure can then be used to get a Fixed-Parameter Tractable Approximation Scheme (FPT-AS) providing a $1 - \varepsilon$ approximation in time $(\mu/\varepsilon)^{O(k)} \cdot |V|^{O(1)}$. This generalizes and improves the results of [Manurangsi, 2019] and [Huang and Sellier, 2022], providing the first FPT-AS working on an arbitrary matroid. Moreover, because of its simplicity, the kernel construction can be performed in the streaming setting.

24. Matroid-Constrained Vertex Cover

Abstract

In this paper, we introduce the problem of Matroid-Constrained Vertex Cover: given a graph with weights on the edges and a matroid imposed on the vertices, our problem is to choose a subset of vertices that is independent in the matroid, with the objective of maximizing the total weight of covered edges. This problem is a generalization of the much studied max $k$-vertex cover problem, in which the matroid is the simple uniform matroid, and it is also a special case of the problem of maximizing a monotone submodular function under a matroid constraint. First, we give a Fixed-Parameter Tractable Approximation Scheme (FPT-AS) when the given matroid is a partition matroid, a laminar matroid, or a transversal matroid. Precisely, if $k$ is the rank of the matroid, we obtain $(1 - \varepsilon)$ approximation using $(1/\varepsilon)^{O(k)}n^{O(1)}$ time for partition and laminar matroids and using $(1/\varepsilon+k)^{O(k)}n^{O(1)}$ time for transversal matroids. This extends a result of Manurangsi for uniform matroids [Manurangsi, 2018]. We also show that these ideas can be applied in the context of (single-pass) streaming algorithms. Besides, our FPT-AS introduces a new technique based on matroid union, which may be of independent interest in extremal combinatorics. In the second part, we consider general matroids. We propose a simple local search algorithm that guarantees $2/3 \approx 0.66$ approximation. For the more general problem where two matroids are imposed on the vertices and a feasible solution must be a common independent set, we show that a local search algorithm gives a $2/3 \cdot (1 - 1/(p+1))$ approximation in $n^{O(p)}$ time, for any integer $p$. We also provide some evidence to show that with the constraint of one or two matroids, the approximation ratio of $2/3$ is likely the best possible, using the currently known techniques of local search.

25. Validation of a prediction system for risk of kidney allograft failure in pediatric kidney transplant recipients: An international observational study.

Abstract

Predicting long-term kidney allograft failure is an unmet need for clinical care and clinical trial optimization in children. We aimed to validate a kidney allograft failure risk prediction system in a large international cohort of pediatric kidney transplant recipients. Patients from 20 centers in Europe and the United States, transplanted between 2004 and 2017, were included. Allograft assessment included estimated glomerular filtration rate, urine protein-to-creatinine ratio, circulating antihuman leukocyte antigen donor-specific antibody, and kidney allograft histology. Individual predictions of allograft failure were calculated using the integrative box (iBox) system. Prediction performances were assessed using discrimination and calibration. The allograft evaluations were performed in 706 kidney transplant recipients at a median time of 9.1 (interquartile range, 3.3-19.2) months posttransplant; mean estimated glomerular filtration rate was 68.7 ± 28.1 mL/min/1.73 m2, and median urine protein-to-creatinine ratio was 0.1 (0.0-0.4) g/g, and 134 (19.0%) patients had antihuman leukocyte antigen donor-specific antibodies. The iBox exhibited accurate calibration and discrimination for predicting the outcomes up to 10 years after evaluation, with a C-index of 0.81 (95% confidence interval, 0.75-0.87). This study confirms the generalizability of the iBox to predict long-term kidney allograft failure in children, with performances similar to those reported in adults. These results support the use of the iBox to improve patient monitoring and facilitate clinical trials in children.

Abstract

Hybridizing superconductivity with the quantum Hall (QH) effects has major potential for designing novel circuits capable of inducing and manipulating non-Abelian states for topological quantum computation. However, despite recent experimental progress towards this hybridization, concrete evidence for a chiral QH Josephson junction -- the elemental building block for coherent superconducting-QH circuits -- is still lacking. Its expected signature is an unusual chiral supercurrent flowing in QH edge channels, which oscillates with a specific $2\phi_0$ magnetic flux periodicity ($\phi_0=h/2e$ is the superconducting flux quantum, $h$ the Planck constant and $e$ the electron charge). Here, we show that ultra-narrow Josephson junctions defined in encapsulated graphene nanoribbons exhibit such a chiral supercurrent, visible up to 8 teslas, and carried by the spin-degenerate edge channel of the QH plateau of resistance $h/2e^2\simeq 12.9$ k$\Omega$. We observe reproducible $2\phi_0$-periodic oscillation of the supercurrent, which emerges at constant filling factor when the area of the loop formed by the QH edge channel is constant, within a magnetic-length correction that we resolve in the data. Furthermore, by varying the junction geometry, we show that reducing the superconductor/normal interface length is pivotal to obtain a measurable supercurrent on QH plateaus, in agreement with theories predicting dephasing along the superconducting interface. Abstract

Electronic edge states in topological insulators have become a major paradigm in physics. The oldest and primary example is that of quantum Hall (QH) edge channels that propagate along the periphery of two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) under perpendicular magnetic field. Yet, despite 40 years of intensive studies using a variety of transport and scanning probe techniques, imaging the real-space structure of QH edge channels has proven difficult, mainly due to the buried nature of most 2DEGs in semiconductors. Here, we show that QH edge states in graphene are confined to a few magnetic lengths at the crystal edges by performing scanning tunneling spectroscopy up to the edge of a graphene flake on hexagonal boron nitride. These findings indicate that QH edge states are defined by boundary conditions of vanishing electronic wavefunctions at the crystal edges, resulting in ideal one-dimensional chiral channels, free of electrostatic reconstruction. We further evidence a uniform charge carrier density at the edges, contrasting with conjectures on the existence of non-topological upstream modes. Abstract

Electron flying qubits are envisioned as potential information link within a quantum computer, but also promise -- alike photonic approaches -- a self-standing quantum processing unit. In contrast to its photonic counterpart, electron-quantum-optics implementations are subject to Coulomb interaction, which provide a direct route to entangle the orbital or spin degree of freedom. However, the controlled interaction of flying electrons at the single particle level has not yet been established experimentally. Here we report antibunching of a pair of single electrons that is synchronously shuttled through a circuit of coupled quantum rails by means of a surface acoustic wave. The in-flight partitioning process exhibits a reciprocal gating effect which allows us to ascribe the observed repulsion predominantly to Coulomb interaction. Our single-shot experiment marks an important milestone on the route to realise a controlled-phase gate for in-flight quantum manipulations.

34. Maximum Weight b-Matchings in Random-Order Streams

Abstract

We consider the maximum weight $b$-matching problem in the random-order semi-streaming model. Assuming all weights are small integers drawn from $[1,W]$, we present a $2 - \frac{1}{2W} + \varepsilon$ approximation algorithm, using a memory of $O(\max(|M_G|, n) \cdot poly(\log(m),W,1/\varepsilon))$, where $|M_G|$ denotes the cardinality of the optimal matching. Our result generalizes that of Bernstein [Bernstein, 2015], which achieves a $3/2 + \varepsilon$ approximation for the maximum cardinality simple matching. When $W$ is small, our result also improves upon that of Gamlath et al. [Gamlath et al., 2019], which obtains a $2 - \delta$ approximation (for some small constant $\delta \sim 10^{-17}$) for the maximum weight simple matching. In particular, for the weighted $b$-matching problem, ours is the first result beating the approximation ratio of $2$. Our technique hinges on a generalized weighted version of edge-degree constrained subgraphs, originally developed by Bernstein and Stein [Bernstein and Stein, 2015]. Such a subgraph has bounded vertex degree (hence uses only a small number of edges), and can be easily computed. The fact that it contains a $2 - \frac{1}{2W} + \varepsilon$ approximation of the maximum weight matching is proved using the classical K\H{o}nig-Egerv\'ary's duality theorem.

Abstract

In this study, we utilised computational fluid dynamics to investigate the behaviour of open-channel basaltic lava flows navigating bends on shield volcanoes. Our focus was on understanding the relationship between flow velocity, rheology, and bend geometry. Employing a simple Force Balance Model (FBM), which considers the equilibrium between hydrostatic pressure and centrifugal force, we accurately approximated the changes in the height of the lava’s free surface through various bend geometries. Our analysis includes examining the influence of channel depth, width, and bend radius on the flow, revealing that variations in these parameters significantly affect the flow’s vertical displacement. Additionally, the bend sector angle emerged as a critical factor, indicating a minimum angle necessary for the flow to fully develop before exiting the bend.Further, we assessed the applicability of the Shallow Water Equations (SWE) for modelling the inertial displacement of the lava flow in bends, finding a good fit. The study extended to comparing the FBM’s predictions of the tilt angle of the flow’s free surface with the SWE results, showing notable agreement under specific conditions, particularly at a bend angle of 90 degrees. The impact of fluid density was also considered, revealing that density is a contributing factor to the development of the wetted line in the bend, a factor that is not captured by the simple FBM model. Finally, we explored different rheologies akin to natural lava flows, such as viscoplastic flow, and determined that factors like yield stress, consistency index, and power law index have a small impact on the flow behaviour in a steady-state condition within a bend.

Abstract

Summary: Human genetic studies of critical COVID-19 pneumonia have revealed the essential role of type I interferon-dependent innate immunity to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Conversely, an association between the HLA-B∗15:01 allele and asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in unvaccinated individuals was recently reported, suggesting a contribution of pre-existing T cell-dependent adaptive immunity. We report a lack of association of classical HLA alleles, including HLA-B∗15:01, with pre-omicron asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in unvaccinated participants in a prospective population-based study in the United States (191 asymptomatic vs. 945 symptomatic COVID-19 cases). Moreover, we found no such association in the international COVID Human Genetic Effort cohort (206 asymptomatic vs. 574 mild or moderate COVID-19 cases and 1,625 severe or critical COVID-19 cases). Finally, in the Human Challenge Characterisation study, the three HLA-B∗15:01 individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 developed symptoms. As with other acute primary infections studied, no classical HLA alleles favoring an asymptomatic course of SARS-CoV-2 infection were identified.

Abstract

The focus of this paper is the efficient numerical solution of the fluid flow in the Utah Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal Energy (FORGE) reservoir. In this study, the public data available for Discrete Fracture Networks (DFN) around well 58-32 is used to represent the DFN. In this research, a novel computationally efficient method called Hele-Shaw (HS) approximation is used for modeling fluid flow in FORGE well. An analysis of the influence of fracture intensity in a network is carried out using the HS method. The HS method was validated by solving the full Navier–Stokes equations (NSE) for a network of eight fractures. A good agreement was observed between the evaluated results (average deviation of 0.76%).

Abstract

When electrons populate a flat band their kinetic energy becomes negligible, forcing them to organize in exotic many-body states to minimize their Coulomb energy. The zeroth Landau level of graphene under magnetic field is a particularly interesting strongly interacting flat band because inter-electron interactions are predicted to induce a rich variety of broken-symmetry states with distinct topological and lattice-scale orders. Evidence for these stems mostly from indirect transport experiments that suggest that broken-symmetry states are tunable by boosting the Zeeman energy or by dielectric screening of the Coulomb interaction. However, confirming the existence of these ground states requires a direct visualization of their lattice-scale orders. Here, we image three distinct broken-symmetry phases in graphene using scanning tunneling spectroscopy. We explore the phase diagram by tuning the screening of the Coulomb interaction by a low or high dielectric constant environment, and with a magnetic field. In the unscreened case, we unveil a Kekul\'e bond order, consistent with observations of an insulating state undergoing a magnetic-field driven Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. Under dielectric screening, a sublattice-unpolarized ground state emerges at low magnetic fields, and transits to a charge-density-wave order with partial sublattice polarization at higher magnetic fields. The Kekul\'e and charge-density-wave orders furthermore coexist with additional, secondary lattice-scale orders that enrich the phase diagram beyond current theory predictions. Abstract

The rheology of a fluid is often difficult to measure in situ and in real time. This work investigates whether it is possible to recover rheological information from direct field observations. We present a closed-form analytical solution for inverse problem of identification of the mobility coefficient in gravity-driven fluid flowed down an inclined plane. The lubrication approximation is used to model the three-dimensional thin film of fluid and the governing equation is solved numerically by the explicit finite difference method to calculate the fluid thickness. We show in this study that using very straightforward measurements of fluid thickness at only a few points and only two successive instants, the mobility coefficient of fluid flow can be estimated accurately. Then as an important application in Bingham fluids we show that the knowledge of the mobility coefficient together with velocity measurement at only one point and instant enable us to estimate temperature-dependent viscosity and yield stress of the Bingham fluid. Unlike other methods, the proposed method allows the local identification of the rheology which is particularly useful when the rheological parameters are functions of the local temperature and/or composition. The proposed inverse analysis is a non-iterative approach with negligible computational cost since our analysis revealed closed form formulae relating the rheological parameters to the local flow depth, its derivatives, and the local free surface velocity.

Abstract

Background Post-induction anaesthesia often promotes intraoperative hypotension (IOH) that can worsen postoperative outcomes. This study aims to assess the benefit of norepinephrine versus ephedrine at the induction of anaesthesia to prevent postoperative complications following major abdominal surgery by preventing IOH.Methods and analysis The EPON STUDY is a prospective single-centre randomised controlled trial with the planned inclusion of 500 patients scheduled for major abdominal surgery at the Amiens University Hospital. The inclusion criteria are patients aged over 50 years weighing more than 50 kg with an American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status score of ≥2 undergoing major abdominal surgery under general anaesthesia. Patients are allocated either to the intervention group (n=250) or the standard group (n=250). In the intervention group, the prevention of post-induction IOH is performed with norepinephrine (dilution to 0.016 mg/mL) using an electric syringe pump at a rate of 0.48 mg/h (30 mL/h) from the start of anaesthesia and then titrated to achieve the haemodynamic target. In the control group, the prevention of post-induction IOH is performed with manual titration of ephedrine, with a maximal dose of 30 mg, followed by perfusion with norepinephrine. In both groups, the haemodynamic target to maintain is a mean arterial pressure (MAP) of 65 mm Hg or 70 mm Hg for patients with a medical history of hypertension. An intention-to-treat analysis will be performed. The primary outcome is the Clavien–Dindo score assessed up to 30 days postoperatively. The secondary endpoints are the length of hospital stay and length of stay in an intensive care unit/postoperative care unit; postoperative renal function; postoperative cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, haematological and infectious complications at 1 month; and volume of intraoperative vascular filling and mortality at 1 month.Ethics and dissemination Ethical approval was obtained from the committee of protection of the persons of Ile de France in May 2021 (number 21 05 41). The authors will be involved in disseminating the research findings (through attending conferences and co-authoring papers). The results of the study will be disseminated via peer-reviewed publications and presentations at national and international conferences.Trial registration number NCT05276596.

Abstract

A key parameter in ice flow modelling is basal slipping at the ice-bed interface as it can have a large effect on the resultant ice thickness. Unfortunately, its contribution to surface observations can be hard to distinguish from that of bed undulations. Therefore, inferring the ice thickness from surface measurements is an interesting and non-trivial inverse problem. This paper presents a method for recovering dually the ice thickness and the basal slip using only surface elevation and speed measurements. The unidirectional shallow ice approximation is first implemented to model steady state ice flow for given bedrock and basal slip profiles. This surface is then taken as synthetic observed data. An augmented Lagrangian algorithm is then used to find the diffusion coefficient which gives the best fit to observations. Combining this recovered diffusion with observed surface velocity, a simple Newton's method is used to recover both the ice thickness and basal slip. The method was successful in each test case and this implies that it should be possible to recover both of these parameters in two-dimensional cases also.

Abstract

We consider the problem of maximizing a non-negative submodular function under the $b$-matching constraint, in the semi-streaming model. When the function is linear, monotone, and non-monotone, we obtain the approximation ratios of $2+\varepsilon$, $3 + 2 \sqrt{2} \approx 5.828$, and $4 + 2 \sqrt{3} \approx 7.464$, respectively. We also consider a generalized problem, where a $k$-uniform hypergraph is given, along with an extra matroid or a $k'$-matchoid constraint imposed on the edges, with the same goal of finding a $b$-matching that maximizes a submodular function. When the extra constraint is a matroid, we obtain the approximation ratios of $k + 1 + \varepsilon$, $k + 2\sqrt{k+1} + 2$, and $k + 2\sqrt{k + 2} + 3$ for linear, monotone and non-monotone submodular functions, respectively. When the extra constraint is a $k'$-matchoid, we attain the approximation ratio $\frac{8}{3}k+ \frac{64}{9}k' + O(1)$ for general submodular functions.
