Black women are less likely to seek psychological help and underutilize mental health services. Although help-seeking attitudes and intentions are associated in the general population, less is known about this relationship among Black women in college. In this cross-sectional study, we investigated the relationship between help-seeking attitudes and intention among 167 self-identified Black women in college. We also investigated if dimensions of the Superwoman Schema (i.e., an obligation to display strength, resistance to being vulnerable, an obligation to suppress emotions, an intense motivation to succeed despite limited resources, and an obligation to help others) moderated this relationship. Findings indicated a significant positive relationship between help-seeking attitudes and help-seeking intention. Regarding moderation, an obligation to suppress emotions, resistance to vulnerability, and an obligation to help others interacted with help-seeking attitudes in predicting help-seeking intention. Notably, low adherence to an obligation to suppress emotions, resistance to vulnerability, and an obligation to help others were associated with high levels of help-seeking intention. However, more favorable help-seeking attitudes improved help-seeking intention for participants high in adherence to these dimensions. Background and Objectives: Circulatory system disease (CSD) patterns vary over time and between countries, related to lifestyle risk factors, associated in turn with socioeconomic circumstances. Current global CSD epidemics in developing economies are similar in scale to those observed previously in the USA and Australasia. Australia exhibits an important macroeconomic phenomenon as a rapidly transitioning economy with high immigration throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. We wished to examine how that historical immigration related to CSD patterns subsequently., Methods and Setting: We provide a novel empirical analysis employing census-derived place of birth by age bracket and sex from 1891 to 1986, in order to map patterns of immigration against CSD mortality rates from 1907 onwards. Age-specific generalised additive models for both CSD mortality in the general population, and all-cause mortality for the foreign-born (FB) only, from 1910 to 1980 were also devised for both males and females., Results: The percentage of FB fell from 32% in 1891 to 9.8% in 1947. Rates of CSD rose consistently, particularly from the 1940s onwards, peaked in the 1960s, then declined sharply in the 1980s and showed a strong period effect across age groups and genders. The main effects of age and census year and their interaction were highly statistically significant for CSD mortality for males (p<0.001, each term) and for females (p<0.001, each term). The main effect of age and year were statistically significant for all-cause mortality minus net migration rates for the FB females (each p<0.001), and for FB males, age (p<0.001) was significant., Conclusions: We argue our empirical calculations, supported by historical and socioepidemiological evidence, employing immigration patterns as a proxy for epidemiological transition, affirm the life course hypothesis that both early life circumstances and later life lifestyle drive CSD patterns., Competing Interests: Competing interests: None declared., (© Author(s) (or their employer(s)) 2023. Background: Obesity is a global health problem of increasing prevalence with a broad range of multisystem complications. An under-recognized complication of severe obesity is the potential haemodynamic compromise that may arise due to pathological external compression of the inferior vena cava whilst lying in the supine position, a phenomenon known as obesity-induced vena cava compression syndrome., Case Summary: A 56-year-old independent woman presented to a rural Australian hospital for routine dressing care for bilateral lymphoedema on a background of class III morbid obesity (weight 197 kg, body mass index 68.55 kg/m 3 ) and aortic stenosis. Whilst laid in the supine position with both legs elevated to aid lower limb venous return, the patient developed angina with associated troponin rise (15 to 75 to 332 ng/L) and inferolateral territory ischaemic changes on electrocardiogram. The pain then resolved shortly after restoring the patient to the upright position. A transthoracic echocardiogram showed critical bicuspid aortic stenosis. Computerized tomography coronary angiogram showed no significant coronary artery disease. Following multidisciplinary discussions, a transcatheter aortic valve insertion was performed via a transfemoral approach. Post-procedure, she went into atrial fibrillation, she was cardioverted into a sinus rhythm with new left bundle branch block. There were no complications otherwise, and the patient was discharged home following a brief period of convalescence., Discussion: We describe a case of suspected obesity-induced vena cava compression syndrome precipitating a type 2 myocardial infarction in a pre-load dependent patient with critical bicuspid valve aortic stenosis. Aim: To characterize defibrillation and cardiac arrest survival outcomes in movies., Methods: Movies from 2003 to 2012 with defibrillation scenes were reviewed for patient and rescuer characteristics, scene characteristics, defibrillation characteristics, additional interventions, and cardiac arrest survival outcomes. Resuscitation actions were compared with chain of survival actions and the American Heart Association (AHA) Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC) 2020 Impact Goals. Cardiac arrest survival outcomes were compared with survival rates reported in the literature and targeted by the AHA ECC 2020 Impact Goals., Results: Thirty-five scenes were identified in 32 movies. Twenty-five (71%) patients were male, and 29 (83%) rescuers were male. Intent of defibrillation was resuscitation in 29 (83%) scenes and harm in 6 (17%) scenes. Cardiac arrest was the indication for use in 23 (66%) scenes, and the heart rhythm was made known in 18 scenes (51%). When the heart rhythm was known, defibrillation was appropriately used for ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation in 5 (28%) scenes and inappropriately used for asystole in 7 (39%) scenes. In 8 scenes with in-hospital cardiac arrest, 7 (88%) patients survived, compared to survival rates of 23.9% reported in the literature and 38% targeted by an AHA ECC 2020 Impact Goal. In 12 movie scenes with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, 8 (67%) patients survived, compared to survival rates of 7.9-9.5% reported in peer-reviewed literature and 15.8% targeted by an AHA ECC 2020 Impact Goal., Conclusion: In movies, defibrillation and cardiac arrest survival outcomes are often portrayed inaccurately, representing missed opportunities for public health education., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Objectives: We sought to explore the feasibility of using a crowdsourcing study to promote awareness about automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and their locations., Methods: The Defibrillator Design Challenge was an online initiative that asked the public to create educational designs that would enhance AED visibility, which took place over 8 weeks, from February 6, 2014, to April 6, 2014. Participants were encouraged to vote for AED designs and share designs on social media for points. Using a mixed-methods study design, we measured participant demographics and motivations, design characteristics, dissemination, and Web site engagement., Results: Over 8 weeks, there were 13 992 unique Web site visitors; 119 submitted designs and 2140 voted. The designs were shared 48 254 times on Facebook and Twitter. Most designers-voters reported that they participated to contribute to an important cause (44%) rather than to win money (0.8%). Design themes included: empowerment, location awareness, objects (e.g., wings, lightning, batteries, lifebuoys), and others., Conclusions: The Defibrillator Design Challenge engaged a broad audience to generate AED designs and foster awareness. This project provides a framework for using design and contest architecture to promote health messages.
