The work is related to optimization of PG dose and survivability of the spawn of Mystus vittatus in the tank nursery at Arabpur Fish Farm in Jessore, Bangladesh during 2000 to 2002. Trial doses of PG used for induced breeding of M. vittatus were 1 to 4 mg PG in the first dose and 4 to 8 mg in the second dose for female. On the other hand, the male fishes were administered only a single trial dose of 2, 3 and 4 mg PG. Induced breeding was successfully done in M. vittatus with 3 mg of PG kg-1 body weight in first dose and 6.0 mg PG in second dose for female and a single dose of 3 mg PG for male for virgin fish, F1 and F2 generation. The tank nursery performance of the fry was studied in regard to length, weight, production and survivability rate. Live animal feeds (rotifers) were used. The highest growth and survivability of the fish fry was obtained by using rotifers of 40 cumm-1 and 20 cumm-1, respectively.

Spinodad of different concentrations were screened against Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) reared on four local wheat varieties to observed the effects on reproductive potentials for two successive generations.The lowest number of eggs laid was 119 (23.80±0.97) observed in Shatabdi- 21 (S-21) in 45 d in F1 and 15 (3.00±0.71) in 15 d in F2 generation when treated at 0.12ìl/g of spinosad. Spinosad at all concentration totally inhibited egg laying oroviposition rate on day 45 in all wheat varieties except P-24 variety in F1 generation.The lowest fertility was found in Shatabdi-21 variety as 12.61percent in F1 and 6.67 percent in F2 generation at 0.12ìl/g.The latent effect of spinosad on number of eggs, larva, pupa and adult obtained in Shatabdi-21 as 2.00±0.32,0.80±0.37, 0.40±0.40 and 0.20±0.20 at 0.12ìl/g of spinosad in F2 generation.There was no significant difference between the number of males and females in F2 generation wheat varieties. Spinosad ultimately reduced the fecundity, fertility and decreased the egg to adult survivability in four wheat varieties compared to control and F1 and F2 generations. Results of the research revealed that comparatively higher concentrations of spinosad that used in this study would potentially control development and reproductive potentiality of T. castaneum in wheat varieties.

The present study was planned to evaluate the effect of spinosad on the survivability and development of Sitophilus oryzae on four wheat varieties viz., BARI-26, BARI-28, Shatabdi-21 and Prodip-24. Three doses in three replications for spinosad were applied to four wheat varieties. Spinosad concentrations significantly increased the total developmental period compared to the control in a dose-dependent manner on four wheat varieties. The highest developmental period took 41.67 ± 0.33 days to become adult was recorded in S-21 at 0.0003 μl/g of spinosad in F1. All adults of F1 did not reach in F2 because surprisingly all adults died after emergence. So, no developmental period was found in S-21 (0.00±0.00) and B-28 (0.00 ± 0.00) days at 0.0003 μl/g spinosad in F2. On the other hand, five mated females were released on the treated wheat with different concentrations of spinosad for 10 - 15 days; then they were removed. Treated wheat was checked for up to 30 to 60 days and observed the progeny for two successive generations (1st and 2nd). Each combination of insect species, insecticide rate, and exposure duration were replicated three times. Among four wheat varieties, the lowest adult emergence was recorded as 08.00 ± 0.58 in F1 and totally controlled in F2 generation in S-21 variety at 0.0003 μl/g. Different concentrations of table salt (NaCl) were evaluated for its induction/anaesthetic and physiological effects on two live fish species viz., Anabas testudineus (Koi) and Channa punctatus (Taki). The time taken to immobilize and fully anaesthesize the fishes were quite long, 36-52.83 hours and 37.75-53 hours respectively for Koi, 64.50-71.50 hours and 68.25- 71.50 hours respectively for Taki, but thereafter a quick mortality occurred in both species. The induction time was negatively related with the concentrations of salt, and independent of the intrinsic factors (total length and total weight) of the fish. No changes in the colours of skin, eye and gill were observed at lower concentrations were observed in A. testudineus, but the eye and gill were found to be affected at low concentrations in C. punctatus, irrespective of the exposure time. Objective: To conduct the antibacterial potency and minimum inhibitory concentration of extracts (n-hexane, acetone, chloroform and methanol) obtained from the root, leaf and stem of Capparis zeylanica. Methods: The powdered leaf, root and stem samples were Soxhlet extracted sequentially in n-hexane, acetone, chloroform and methanol. Antibacterial potency was evaluated by following the agar diffusion method and amoxicillin disc was used as a control. Results: In vitro antibacterial activity against 12 bacteria was performed with crude extracts. Among them, all the bacteria showed the moderate activity but chloroform and methanolic extracts showed promising antibacterial potency against Staphylococcus aureus, Sarcina lutea, Bacillus megaterium, Bacillus subtilis, Salmonella typhi and Shigella dysenteriae (leaf > root > stem). This activity was evaluated using disc diffusion method with a standard antibiotic, 30 µg/disc of amoxicillin. Conclusions: Strong antibacterial potency of chloroform and methanolic extracts provides new antibacterial compounds.

Toxicity of some important indigenous plant powder (Nigella sativa Linn.,Murrayapaniculata Linn., Jatrophacurcas Linn., Eucalyptus camaldulensisDehn., DaturametelLinn., and Vitexnegundo Linn.) were used against different life stages of lesser grainborer, Rhizoperthadominica (Fabricius). Among them seed powder of N. sativa provedto be the most effective as toxicant. The results revealed to reduce the egg mortality,larval mortality and adult mortality of R. dominica significantly (P M. paniculata> J. curcas> E.camaldulensis> D. metel> V. negundo. The result of bird watching at Rajshahi University (RU) campus during a period from March 2008 to July 2012 is presented in this article. A total of 159 species of birds under 102 genera, 36 families and 13 orders were observed. Highest number of species (76) and genera (41) are passerines, of which the highest number of species belongs to Corvidae family. Among the non-passerines (83 species) maximum number of species is under the family Ardeidae. Three species remained unidentified. Among the birds of RU campus 121 species are residents of Bangladesh; 38 species are migratory, of which 29 are winter visitors, 2 are summer visitors and 7 are passage migrants. An investigation was conducted to study the abundance and diversity of Small Indigenous Species (SIS) of fish in the Chalan Beel. Sampling was carried out frequently over a year in selected landing centres, fish markets and catch points. A total of 82 SIS fish belonging to 10 orders, 22 families and 46 genera were recorded. The order Cypriniformes (42.68%) was the most dominant order comprising 35 species. The most dominant family of the order Cypiniformes was Cyprinidae (77.14%) comprising 27 species, and Puntius was the largest genus including 7 species. The most abundant SIS fishes observed during the study period were Tengra ( Mystus vittatus , M. tengara ), Punti ( Puntius sophore and P. ticto ), Taki ( Channa punctatus ), Guchi Baim ( Mastacembelus pancalus ), and the least abundant SIS fish were Aplocheilus panchax , Badis badis , Danio sp. and Chaca chaca . Availability of the species were ranked as Few (39%), followed by Common (23%), Very Common (15%), Rare (16%) and Very Rare (7%). Ecdysone is a steroid hormone especially found in insects and mammals. One day old pupae of Tribolium castaneum were exposed to crude ecdysone at different concentrations of 10, 20, 40, 80, 160, and 320 μl/kg of whole wheat flour each for 1, 3 and 5 days. The larvae of Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) of different ages were exposed to various concentrations viz., 0.0001, 0.001 and 0.01 ppm of triflumuron up to pupation. The adults were allowed to feed on untreated diet. The preoviposition period, fecundity, egg viability and incubation period of the eggs laid were studied. Triflumuron significantly lengthened the preoviposition and incubation periods (P < 0.001). Fecundity and egg viability were also reduced (P < 0.001) due to the treatment. Both the strains were affected by the treatment.

The research was carried out to assess the trace metal concentration in sediments of ship breaking area in Bangladesh. The study areas were separated into Ship Breaking Zone and Reference Site for comparative analysis. Metals like iron (Fe) was found at 11,932 to 41,361.71 μg.g-1 in the affected site and 3393.37 μg.g-1 in the control site. Manganese (Mn) varied from 2.32 to 8.25 μg.g-1 in the affected site whereas it was recorded as 1.8 μg.g-1 in the control area. Chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn) and lead (Pb) also varied from 22.89 to 86.72 μg.g-1; 23.12 to 48.6; 83.78 to 142.85 and 36.78 to 147.83 μg.g-1 respectively in the affected site whereas these were recorded as 19, 3.98, 22.22 and 8.82 μg.g-1 in the control site. Copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg) concentration varied from 21.05 to 39.85, 0.57 to 0.94 and 0.05 to 0.11 μg.g-1 in the affected site and 33.0, 0.115 and 0.01 μg.g-1 in the control site. It may be concluded that heavy metal pollution in sediments at ship breaking area of Bangladesh is at alarming stage.

The parasitic wasp Anisopteromalus calandrae (Howard) was released at six (5, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 pairs) densities to evaluate the effects of different introduction rates in controlling residual populations of the lesser grain borer Rhyzopertha dominica (Fabricius) in wheat grain stored in bulk in 46m2 rooms. At the 50-pair density, the parasitoid suppressed 83% of R. dominica in June–July and 74% in August–September. At the 5-pair density, the numbers of F1 progeny per female were 44 and 51, during the first and second period, respectively while at the 50-pair release rate, only 6 and 7 individuals were recorded, respectively. In a second test, the effects of different materials used for storing were evaluated on both insects. Five hundred (500) grain-residing 20–22-day-old R. dominica larvae were mixed with 250 g fresh wheat stored separately in each of five types of bags, i.e. jute, calico (Americana cloth), polypropylene, polythene, nylon, then exposed to 50 pairs of A. calandrae. The parasitoid suppressed host populations in all types of bags, except in those made of polythene. The highest percentage (69 and 81%) suppression occurred in calico bags during the June–July and August–September periods, respectively. The lowest suppression of 51 and 57% was observed for polypropylene bags during the respective periods. The parasitoid-induced mortality was positively correlated with the parasitoid density.

Insect growth regulators (IGRs), triflumuron at concentrations of 0.001, 0.05 and 0.1ppm, and diflubenzuron at concentrations of 0.005, 0.05 and 0.01ppm in presence of 2-, 4- and 8 pairs of a predator Xylocoris flavipes Reuter, significantly(p Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) in 60 days exposure period. The PRC values ranged from 55.3 (0.005ppm of diflubenzuron with 2 pairs of X. flavipes ) to 84.3 (0.1ppm of triflumuron with 8 pairs of X. flavipes ). IGRs have reduced the predator’s population up to maximum as 56.6% compared to the control at 0.1ppm of triflumuron when 2 pairs of predators were introduced during the same exposure time. Context: Diatomaceous earth (DE) compounds have been recognized as reduced risk and eco-friendly compounds, which can be used in the insect pest management programmes for food storage and processing areas. Objective: To determine the repellent or attractant property of a DE formulation (Mitex) against the larvae of Tribolium castaneum (Herbst), a major pest of stored-products. Materials and Methods: The experiment was conducted in choice chambers, which was divided into two equal halves by drawing a line through the midline. One half of the chamber was loaded with untreated flour (control) and the other half was loaded with DE-treated flour. Twenty larvae of a definite age were released in the midline of the two foods, thus providing them an option for choosing either treated or untreated food. The experiment was set separately for different ages of larvae (9-, 12- and 15-day old), doses of DE (2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 mg DE/g of flour) and exposure periods (24-, 48-, 72-, 96- and 120-hours). All the experiments were replicated three times and conducted at 30 ± 1°C in an incubator without humidity and light control. Context: Bottom condition and aquatic plants of the water bodies play important roles on the population growth of Macrobrachium lamarrei . Objective: To study the effects of different bottoms and aquatic vegetations on the population growth of Macrobrachium lamarei . Materials and Methods: Brood stocks of M. lamarrei were maintained in mini ponds, and they were fed in 24h with supplemental diets. For observing the effect of bottom condition on the prawn population three tanks (each 32"x36"x21"with a constant water depth of 16") were prepared: tank I, cemented bottom with no vegetation; tank II, muddy bottom and with water hyacinth and tank III, sandy-muddy bottom (2:1) with water hyacinth. To study the effect of aquatic plants on the population separate four tanks were prepared with sandy-muddy bottom (1:1) and subsequently with different vegetations. These were: tank I with Ipomea , tank II with Alternanthera , tank III with Eichornia, Ipomea, Alternanthera, Wolffia and Lemna , tank IV with Wolffia and Lemna . M. lamarrei of both sexes (N = 40-55) were released in each tank depending on the experimental type. Number of prawns of different stages was counted after 3 and 6 months to determine the effect of bottom condition, and after 3, 6 9 and 12 months to record the effect of aquatic plants. Results : M. lamarrei was found to prefer sandy-muddy bottom than cemented or muddy bottoms. The total population was recorded after six months as 760 (tank I), 1018 (tank II) and 1542 (tank III) where the initial number of released prawns was 55. Aquatic vegetations affected the population growthdifferently. After 12 months the total population was recorded as 2590 (tank I), 3416 (tank II), 1360 (tank III) and 1580 (tank IV). Population of M. lamarrei was maximum when Alternanthera (Santi sak) was present. Conclusion : The results provide baseline information for establishing culture system for M. lamarrei and related smaller species of this genus simultaneously . Dishwashing liquids viz . Vim and Trix at concentrations of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0% were toxic against the adult American cockroach, Periplaneta americana L. after 24-h of exposure. Knockdown effect of the detergents was found to be 70-78% by contact with both the detergents. Whereas, by dipping 100% of the cockroaches were knocked down and ultimately died at 24-h exposure. The LC 50 values were calculated for contact toxicity were 1.490% for Vim and 0.883% for Trix. The results revealed that Trix is more toxic than Vim against the adult P. americana. With a view to gather information on the diversity, habitat, distribution and residential status of avifauna of Joypurhat District under Rajshahi Division, a systematic field study was conducted for a period of eight months from April to November 2010. The study area was divided into the following five Upazila sites viz. Site A Joypurhat Sadar; Site B Khetlal; Site C Panchbibi; Site D Akkelpur and Site E Kalai. A total of 57 species, belonging to 8 orders, 28 families and 48 genera, were recorded. Of 57 species, 47.37% were non-passerines and 52.63% passerines; 89.43% were resident and 11.57% migratory. The status of the birds ranged from 14.04% for fairly common to 45.61% for rare species. The diversity of the bird species ranged from 25 (47.37%) for site D to 39 (68.42%) for site A. The study revealed that most of the species used more than one habitat and the highest number of species, 52 (91.23%), was observed on the trees, whereas the lowest number of species, 3 (5.26%), was found around the ponds. A number of environmental and man-made factors appeared to be responsible for declining population and species diversity of the birds in the study area. Seven different species viz. Chanda baculis, Chanda ranga, Amblypharyngodon mola, Oxygaster bacaila, Clupisoma atherinoides, Corica soborna, Mystus vittatus and a group of mixed SIS fishes viz. Mastacembelus pancalus , Xenntodon cancila , Chanda baculis and Glossogobius giuris were used for preparation of dust which can be preserved for a time period. The fishes were sun dried or oven dried, which are also method of preservation. Quality of the oven-dried fish was better than that of the sun-dried fish, but sun-drying process is easy and can be used in large scale. The fish powder remained in good condition for 7-9 months at normal room temperature, but at -18°C the powder was in good condition throughout the year. Highest quantity of powder from 1 kg of fish was obtained in case of the mixed species as 24.61% and the lowest in O. bacaila which was 20.52%. Biochemical analysis showed that the maximum calcium content was found as 1.34% in M. vittatus and minimum was 0.80% in mixed SIS fishes. Maximum phosphorus content was 2.90% in C. ranga and minimum was 1.72% in C. soborna . Maximum iron content was found as 45.20 mg/100g in mixed SIS fishes and minimum was found as 16.85 mg/100g in O. bacaila . The maximum moisture content was found in C. ranga (13.50%) and the minimum in mixed SIS fishes (11.65%). The maximum protein content was recorded in the mixed SIS fishes (72.45%) and the minimum in C. ranga (52.65%). The experiment was replicated three times and conducted from July 2005 to July 2008. Effect of the seed dust of yellow karavi (Nerium oleander L.), flower juice of akanda (Calotropis procera L.) and two IGRs (diflubenzuron and triflumeron) were observed on the development of two-spotted spider mite (TSSM), Tetranychus urticae Koch. The seed dust of yellow karavi and akanda juice delayed the development of T. urticae resulting the elongation of duration of different developmental periods. But, the last stage of development was not affected with these treatments. Similarly, the two IGRs also significantly extended the duration of different developmental stages except deutonymph to adult. The different doses of two plant materials and two IGRs produced different effects on the development of two-spotted spider mite. A study was conducted to observe the breeding performance and nursery practices of the threatened indigenous fish species Labeo bata in Jessore (Longitude: 89°122 003 East; Latitude: 23°102 453 North), Bangladesh during 1998 to 2002. Eight trial doses of PG (Pituitary Gland) used for induced breeding of L. bata were 1.0mgPG/kg in the first dose, and 1.0 to 8.0mgPG/kg in second dose for female. On the other hand, five trial doses were administered for the male to identify the suitable single dose (1.5mgPG/kg) only. The best performance was obtained with 5.0mg of PG/kg body weight in the second dose for female of wild and successive three generations. Low concentration of raw flower juice of Calotropis porcera (Asclepiadecae) and seed dust of Nerium oleander (Apocynacae) significantly delayed the egg to adult development of two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch, for three successive generations under laboratory trial. The flower juice of C. porcera was found more effective than the seed dust of N. oleander in delaying the developmental period of TSSM. Seeds of black grams, lentils, Bengal grams and green peas were soaked separately in aqueous solutions of Triflumuron at doses of 0.0 (control), 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 ppm. Three day -old adults of Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) were allowed to oviposit on air-dried, treated or untreated pulses of each type and dose in ‘no-choice' and ‘free-choice' tests. Maximum oviposition occurred in Bengal grams (61.00? 0.25) and green peas (33.67? 0.54) in ‘no-choice' and ‘free-choice' tests, respectively. The beetles avoided egg laying on lentils. Maximum egg-hatching occurred on black grams (>90%) in both tests. Minimum developmental time was required in the Bengal grams (30? 0.5 days in ‘no-choice' test and 31.33? 1.23 days in ‘free-choice' test). No adults emerged from green peas, while 54.79% and 86.15% emergence were recorded from untreated black grams in ‘no-choice' and ‘free-choice' tests, respectively. Triflumuron reduced egg-laying significantly in green peas, where hatchability also reduced significantly to 35.99% at 2 ppm in ‘no-choice' test. Percentage of hatching decreased in all pulses with the increasing doses of triflumuron. No adults emerged from the treated green peas in any test, and at 2 ppm the adult emergence declined to < 50% in all pulses. The larval feeding of Rhyzopertha dominica (F.) on whole wheat grains treated with dry leaf powder of Murrya paniculata L., Jatropha curcas L. (Jack), Datura metel L., Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehn. and Virtex negundo L. and seed powder of Nigella sativa L. produced abnormalities in larval, pupal and adult stages at doses 2.5, 5 and 10 mg/g in case of all leaf powder treatments and the effect was more distinct at higher doses. After seven days of hatching, larvae of each exposure were reared separately on triflumuron (1 x 10-3 mg/kg) treated food and observed the population of various developmental stages e.g., egg, larval, pupal and adult at storage periods of 3-, 6- and 9-months. UVrays and triflumuron treatments deleteriously reduced the populations of all the developmental stages of A. diaperinus. Egg and pupal populations of the beetle were adversely influenced by the storage periods also. Complete reduction of A. diaperinus populations was achieved from 6-9 months storage periods, when eggs were exposed to UV-rays for 8 minutes. The efficacy of different concentrations of the commercial neem-based insecticide, Nimbicidine® was evaluated against the eggs of the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum (Herbst). The insecticide significantly inhibited the hatching, pupation and adult emergence of the beetle. The latent effects of Nimbicidine® on the next generation progenies were expressed by significant reductions in the growth of larvae, pupation and adult emergence coupled with lengthened developmental period, but the sex ratio was unaffected.
